C'OVID Rattles The Chinese System - Peter Zeihan On China New Update
The people of Shanghai, and Hong Kong, and likely soon Beijing are facing extraordinary pressures as hunger and surveillance and fear and censorship take their toll. And the cult of personality that Chinese President Xi Jinping has worked to build over the past decade is squarely in the crosshairs.

Government Corruption
20 Federal ‘Assets' Embedded at Capitol on Jan. 6, Court Filing Says
[NTD] At least 20 FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives "assets" were embedded around the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, a defense attorney wrote in a court filing on April 12.

The disclosure was made in a motion seeking to dismiss seditious conspiracy and obstruction charges against 10 Oath Keepers defendants in one of the most prominent Jan. 6 criminal cases.

David W. Fischer, attorney for Thomas E. Caldwell of Berryville, Virginia, filed a 41-page motion to dismiss four counts on behalf of all Oath Keepers case defendants before U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta in Washington, D.C.

Caldwell is charged in the indictment, but is not a member of the Oath Keepers, he told The Epoch Times in March.

“At least 20 FBI and ATF assets were embedded around the Capitol on J6,” read a footnote on Page 6 of the motion. No other details were provided in the document.

The footnote said defense attorneys “combed through a mountain of discovery,” including FBI form 302 summaries of interviews conducted by FBI agents.

In addition to the information about law-enforcement assets on the ground at the Capitol, the footnote says, the Oath Keepers “were being monitored and recorded prior to J6.”

Poring over evidence turned over in discovery by prosecutors in two major Oath Keepers cases has “not found one iota of proof” that defendants “had any plan, intention, design, or scheme to specifically enter the Capitol Building on J6,” the motion said.

Fischer told The Epoch Times he could not comment on the motion or provide more details on the footnote.

Since the first arrests of Jan. 6 defendants in early 2021, there has been extensive speculation and questions from attorneys, defendants, case observers, and members of Congress about the role law enforcement played that day.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing on Jan. 11, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) grilled top FBI officials on the subject.

“How many FBI agents or confidential informants actively participated in the events of Jan. 6?” Cruz asked Jill Sanborn, executive assistant director of the FBI’s national security branch.

“Sir, I’m sure you can appreciate that I can’t go into the specifics of sources and methods,” Sanborn said.

Cruz replied, “Did any FBI agents or confidential informants actively participate in the events of Jan. 6, yes or no?”

“Sir, I can’t answer that,” Sanborn said.

“Did any FBI agents or confidential informants commit crimes of violence on Jan. 6?” Cruz asked.

“I can’t answer that, sir,” Sanborn replied.

Jeremy M. Brown, an Oath Keepers member from Florida who was charged with two Jan. 6-related counts but is not part of either major Oath Keepers conspiracy case, told The Epoch Times earlier this year that the FBI unsuccessfully tried to recruit him in 2020 to spy on the group.

Brown said the same agents who later arrested him for alleged Jan. 6 crimes tried to recruit him on Dec. 11, 2020, to become a confidential informant. He refused. He was arrested on Sept. 30, 2021, when dozens of federal agents swarmed his Florida property.

“When asked by me and my girlfriend to produce the warrants at the time of arrest, they refused to produce them,” Brown said. “One agent was even recorded stating, ‘We don’t know what we are looking for yet.’ They should look for a copy of the Constitution and read it.”

First Texas bus drops off migrants blocks from US Capitol in Washington, DC
[FoxNews] A bus from Texas arrived in Washington, D.C. Wednesday morning, transporting dozens of illegal immigrants as part of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s new plan to counter federal immigration policies during an ongoing border crisis.

Abbott announced last week that he was directing the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to transport migrants released from federal custody in Texas to the nation’s capital and other locations outside his state.

The bus pulled up at approximately 8 a.m. local time, blocks away from the U.S. Capitol building. Fox News has learned that they came from the Del Rio sector in Texas, after coming to the U.S. from Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

Upon the bus's arrival in Washington, D.C., individuals disembarked one by one except for family units who exited together. They checked in with officials and had wristbands they were wearing cut off before being told they could go.

The agency told Fox News on Monday that many of the communities that originally reached out for support – from the Rio Grande Valley to Terrell County – say the federal government stopped dropping immigrants in their towns since Abbott's announcement on April 6.
According to TDEM, Abbott’s plan is already working. The agency told Fox News on Monday that many of the communities that originally reached out for support – from the Rio Grande Valley to Terrell County – say the federal government stopped dropping immigrants in their towns since Abbott's announcement on April 6.

Some had questioned whether Abbott’s plan to bus migrants was genuine. The White House dismissed it as a "publicity stunt." Even Texas state Rep. Matt Schaefer, a Republican, called it a "gimmick."

TDEM said it dispatched buses over the weekend to border communities where it coordinated with officials to identify these immigrants. The agency added that each bus has the capacity and supplies necessary to carry up to 40 migrants released in Texas communities and transport them to Washington, D.C.

Still, the governor's legal authority to transport busloads of migrants to the U.S. Capitol remains in question. The 2012 Supreme Court case, Arizona v. the United States, prevents states from making their own immigration policies.

Abbott insists that the federal government is failing to adequately address the situation. President Biden recently announced that he would be rescinding Title 42, which was used to expel migrants swiftly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Texans demand and deserve an aggressive, comprehensive strategy to secure our border—not President Biden's lackluster leadership," Abbott said in a statement. "As the federal government continues to roll back commonsense policies that once kept our communities safe, our local law enforcement has stepped up to protect Texans from dangerous criminals, deadly drugs, and illegal contraband flooding into the Lone Star State."

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
The Miracle of Ukrainian Survival
[The Atlantic] This friday, as Passover begins, my thoughts will turn to my late grandmother. Born in Ukraine, she survived the Nazis, the only one in her immediate family to escape the guns of the génocidaires. Each year, at the beginning of the seder, she would stand from her chair, if she could, and recount the story of her flight, never explicitly drawing comparisons to the exodus from Egypt. As she finished her testimony—which, like the seder itself, entailed the ritualistic repetition of details and phrases—she would stare across the table and tell us, "You are my revenge against Hitler."

This year, I began to think about those words long before the holiday season. They returned to me on the night of February 25, the second day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In the darkness of Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stepped into the empty streets, trailed by a coterie of advisers. A rumor, nefariously spread, held that Zelensky had fled for his life, a decision that would have arguably made rational sense. After all, sources in U.S. intelligence were telling reporters that his government would likely be toppled in a week’s time. To counteract the sense of doom descending on Ukraine, he recorded a video on a phone. Using the gentlest version of his gravelly voice, he told his people, "We are still here."

Like my grandmother’s admonition, Zelensky’s words were a prayer and a defiant rallying cry. I felt as if they had been uttered, unconsciously, in the spirit of Passover.

Abigail Pogrebin: Why is this year different from all other years?

The Haggadah instructs its readers to tell the story of the exodus as if they were themselves slaves in Egypt. It demands an imaginative leap that places those at the table in a chain of events, asking them to vicariously conjure the terror of fleeing the Egyptians, but also the jubilation of liberation. Like the subtext of my grandmother’s conclusion, the seder not-so-subtly imposes a burden on its participants. Because their ancestors persisted through the worst, the present generation can’t be the ones who give up. In other words, the ritualistic retelling of the story of Jewish survival becomes the basis for Jewish survival.

Zelensky, a performer by trade, has been telling a story about his own people, in the hopes that it can help carry his nation through its own struggle against a pharaoh. Among the hopeful words in his story is we. His daily video messages to his people repeat flourishes like, "We are all Ukrainians. We are all Europeans. We are all free people of the free world." But that description of national sentiment wasn’t always an objective description of political reality. Ever since Ukraine became an independent nation, in 1991, its politics have been divided along linguistic and geographic lines. Political parties representing the Ukrainian-speaking west vied for power against factions representing the Russian-speaking east. Clearly, Vladimir Putin hoped that this divide would bolster his invasion, that denizens of eastern cities would greet the Russian army as liberators.

In Putin’s analysis of the world, a nation’s military strength is an outgrowth of its national character. The mightiest states have traditionalist foundations, a sense of nationhood grounded in religion and patriarchal values, the affection that comes from blood and soil. That’s another weakness he identified in Ukraine: its cosmopolitanism. Ukraine aspires to align with the European Union and its dream of transcending national borders. Its president has espoused tolerance for LGBTQ people; he was an entertainer who once pretended to play the piano with his penis. Ukraine is weak because it is decadence incarnate.

Putin is holding GPS hostage – Here's how to get it back
[C4ISRnet] "GPS is an enormous bargaining chip for Vladimir Putin" — George Beebe, former Chief Russia Analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency

On November 15, 2021 a missile streaked into space from Russia, destroying a retired Russian satellite. The remnant debris endangered other satellites and the International Space Station crew that included Russian cosmonauts.

Russia’s anti-satellite test was meant as a clear message to the U.S.; Russia can destroy American satellites. Two weeks later a Russian news media personality bragged that Russia could bring down all 32 GPS satellites, a move that would affect nearly every facet of American life. The demonstration and subsequent threat would become a prelude to Russia’s next major act.

As Russia shot down a satellite, they were also massing troops at their border with Ukraine. When they invaded in February, the threat to American satellites became a particularly ominous deterrent to U.S. support for Ukraine.

U.S. critical infrastructure relies on precise timing and navigation signals from GPS satellites. A member of the National Security Council acknowledged this at a December public meeting saying "GPS is still a single point of failure" for America.

If GPS signals suddenly disappeared, transportation systems would immediately suffer. Everything would slow down, carry less capacity and be more dangerous. Air travel would be less efficient and safe. Delivery services would be hamstrung. Uber and Lyft would be out of business.

#2  Oh my god there is so much stupid in this article.

First, the satellite that the Russians shot down was in very low earth orbit. Less than 2,000km. Most of the GPS satellites are in mid-earth orbit at 20,000-26,000km. Even the US does not have a system in place to kill satellites at this altitude.

The satellites are orbiting all over the earth's surface so Russia can't get all of them. If they could reach up that high, maybe they could cause some issues over Europe and Asia and that is about it. The US also has 15 GPS satellites as backups and with newer private space companies can get them back up pretty quick.

Lastly, attacking a system like this would be a full act of war and doubtful the US and the rest of the world would just go "Oh well. We give up". It would be WWIII and the western world would start hitting Russian targets so Putie-pie might as well go full nuclear at that point.

Posted by: DarthVader || 04/13/2022 12:10 Comments || Top||

#3  I think destroying commercial satellites would also be legally actionable (I know) and open the door to the US dropping any treaties it has in place preventing us from doing likewise in the future.

#4  Now a US spy satellite at low earth orbit that Russia knows is passing on real time information to the Ukraine... that is a different story. I'd knock that sucker out of orbit.

#6  We could, but it seems the Russians just aren't using that much "smart" munitions. Most is dumb bombs and rockets currently. Doesn't seem worth the cost. I would rather just more MANPADs and Soviet medium-altitude SAMs to deal with air power and drones.

#10  I think GPS is becoming less and less useful. I think smart phones triangulate between cell towers for positioning.

For an Android phone, put it in airplane mode and pull up maps. It still finds you. That is GPS.

And it isn't just phones. Pretty much everything that can be tracked now relies on GPS. If GPS went offline tomorrow, most ships, planes and anything that needs to know where it is on the planet is, in the technical term, fucked.

GPS is more and more becoming something modern society just can't do without. Just like the internet and electricity.

#13  ICBMs (ours anyway) use inertial and celestial guidance to accomplish their course. The system is refined enough that it includes adjustments for the variations in the Earth's magnetic field. Of course, an actual ICBM course is all about flying to a point deploying the bus and then the individual warheads from the bus. It's one of those things that is at once very simple and in the sense that it works at all a miracle.

The Atlantic - Ukraine's Three-to-One Advantage
This is interesting input about war and its changes. The competition between offensive technology and defensive technology goes back for millenia. Offenensve technology jumps, like the invention of the tank or war aircraft, then defensive technology reacts with the invention of bazookas, Panzerfaust, etc, and AA guns and AA rockets. Every now and then one side really outstrips the other and then for a while one side has a major advantage. Will tanks become a thing of the past, will aircraft carriers become just huge targets? If so, what happens after that?

#1  Closing paragraphs, though the rest is well worth the time to read:

Napoleon, who fought many battles in this part of the world, observed that “the moral is to the physical as three is to one.” I was thinking of this maxim as Jed and I finished our tea.

In Ukraine—at least in this first chapter of the war—Napoleon’s words have held true, proving in many ways decisive. In my earlier conversation with Zagorodnyuk, as he and I went through the many reforms and technologies that had given the Ukrainian military its edge, he was quick to point out the one variable he believed trumped all others. “Our motivation—it is the most important factor, more important than anything. We’re fighting for the lives of our families, for our people, and for our homes. The Russians don’t have any of that, and there’s nowhere they can go to get it.”

Sweden: Majority of Prostitution Busts in March Involved Exploited Ukrainian Women
[Breitbart] A Swedish police operation conducted in March bust 38 men seeking to purchase sex from prostitutes and found that 30 of them had bought sexual favours from exploited Ukrainian women.

Swedish police conducted “Operation Cod” in March and arrested a total of 38 men by the end of the month who were accused of purchasing sex from prostitutes and found that 30 of them had bought sex from Ukrainian women, some of whom have recently fled the ongoing conflict with Russia.

“It’s startling. It can be clear from the ads that the women have recently come from Ukraine, but these men do not care,” police inspector Simon Häggström told broadcaster SVT.

“More or less all the women we spoke to say that it is the war that has led to prostitution. You have no choice but to sell your body to help your families who are in Ukraine or who are on the run,” Häggström added.

According to SVT, many of the women have been lured by sex traffickers through the internet and are promised accommodation and cash in exchange for becoming prostitutes.

“The traffickers attract [women] with package solutions where they pay for travel and accommodation. Then there are so-called operators who act as intermediaries between the women and the sex buyers. Everything is very organized,” inspector Häggström said.

Britain
Transgender Police Permitted to Strip-Search Biologically Female Suspects
Feel the Love
[Breitbart] Male-to-female transgender police in the UK are fully permitted to strip-search biologically female suspects according to newly-seen police guidelines.

According to police guidelines quietly put into place late last year, male-to-female transgender police officers in the UK are allowed to conduct strip searches on biologically female suspects.

Women who try to refuse such strip searches could find themselves being reprimanded with a so-called “non-crime hate incident“, an entry on an individual’s police record which can sometimes jeopardise a person’s future job prospects.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, the new policing guidelines were put in place in December of last year, but have only recently come to light for the public thanks to a recently retired officer making them available to the British publication.

While strip searches must reportedly be conducted by an officer of the same sex as the subject, the new guidelines are reported to state that, once an officer is recognised as having transitioned by “present[ing] in the gender with which they identify”, they are permitted to conduct strip-searches on the gender they have transitioned to.

“Thus, once a Transgender colleague has transitioned, they will search persons of the same gender as their own lived gender,” the document reportedly says.

The guidelines also go into detail regarding a person’s refusal to be strip-searched by a transgender individual, saying that “‘If the refusal is based on discriminatory views, consideration should be given for the incident [to] be recorded as a non-crime hate incident unless the circumstances amount to a recordable crime.”

“The more I read it, the more shocked I was,” said Superintendent Cathy Larkman, who passed on the guidelines after retiring from service. “This is a devastating blow to women’s trust in the police.”

“Women are not even an afterthought in this guidance — they are completely non-existent,” the recently retired officer claimed. “Everything is geared towards the sensitivities of the officer doing the searching.”

Conservative Party politicians have previously promised to roll back the use of the “non-crime hate incident” since a court ruling last year shed light on the nature of the measure, with the country’s Home Secretary pledging to protect freedom of speech.

However, the ostensibly conservative government has seemingly instead doubled down on supporting trans-ideology with positive platitudes and hate speech laws, with one senior government official even failing to define the term “woman” during an interview in what appears to be a concession to the hardline leftist lobby.

Give War A Chance
[TK News By Mike Taibbi] More and more, we're told outright war isn't just necessary and right, but the thing that will solve America's existential problems.

Robert Kagan, neoconservative writer and husband to Deputy Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland, wrote a piece called "The Price of Hegemony" in Foreign Affairs last week that was fascinating. If I’d written his opening, people would denounce me as a Putin-concubine:

Although it is obscene to blame the United States for Putin’s inhumane attack on Ukraine, to insist that the invasion was entirely unprovoked is misleading.

Just as Pearl Harbor was the consequence of U.S. efforts to blunt Japanese expansion on the Asian mainland, and just as the 9/11 attacks were partly a response to the United States’ dominant presence in the Middle East after the first Gulf War, so Russian decisions have been a response to the expanding post–Cold War hegemony of the United States and its allies in Europe.

Kagan went on to make an argument straight out of Dr. Strangelove. Instead of doing what some critics want and focusing on “improving the well-being of Americans,” the U.S. government is instead properly recognizing the responsibility that comes with being a superpower. So, while Russia’s invasion may indeed have been a foreseeable consequence of a decision to expand our hegemonic reach, now that we’re here, there’s only one option left. Total commitment:

It is better for the United States to risk confrontation with belligerent powers when they are in the early stages of ambition and expansion, not after they have already consolidated substantial gains. Russia may possess a fearful nuclear arsenal, but the risk of Moscow using it is not higher now than it would have been in 2008 or 2014, if the West had intervened then. And it has always been extraordinarily small…

About the author: Robert Kagan is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a contributing columnist for The Washington Post. Kagan is an American neoconservative scholar, and critic of U.S. foreign policy and a leading advocate of liberal interventionism. A co-founder of the neoconservative Project for the New American Century, he is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Wikipedia

Hospitals Make $120 Billion While Skirting Federal Transparency Law
[Real Clear Policy] Three of the largest for-profit hospital chains in the U.S. made a combined $120 billion in 2021, while violating federal transparency laws, according to an investigation by Patient Rights Advocate.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2021, the Affordable Care Act required hospitals to be transparent about what they charge patients.

The Hospital Price Transparency Rule requires providers to post prices for their medical services online in a "machine-readable standard charges list for all items and services for all payers and plans" as well as a "standard charges list or price estimator tool for the 300 most common shoppable services," according to the report.

The idea was to promote competition between hospitals, thereby lowering prices.

The Patient Rights Advocate report found that only 14 percent of the 1,000 hospitals reviewed were compliant with these regulations, and only 0.5 percent of hospitals owned by the three largest U.S. hospital systems — HCA Healthcare, CommonSpirit Health, and Ascension — were compliant.

None of the HCA Healthcare system’s 118 hospitals were compliant, the report found, and those three large systems made a combined $120 billion (page 3).

Open The Books studied the largest non-profit health care providers in the country in 2019 and found that their revenues and assets continued to grow as consumer prices skyrocketed, all while receiving tax breaks for their "non-profit" status.

Patient Rights Advocate found that the cost to companies to comply with these transparency regulations would be $12,000 per hospital.

Why are hospitals so reluctant to post their prices? Fear of competition may play a role. If hospitals followed the law, consumers might shop around to find the best deals on their medical procedures.

The U.S. needs to enforce its laws to ensure hospitals are being transparent in their pricing, since they won’t voluntarily obey the law.

[NYPost] A troubled man who railed against Mayor Adams and made bizarre threatening rants on YouTube has been identified as a person of interest in the savage Brooklyn subway attack that injured at least 23 people Tuesday morning, officials said.

Frank James — who warned last month that he was "entering the danger zone" — rented a U-Haul van tied to the N train attack in Sunset Park and is being sought for questioning, police said at an evening briefing.

"Mr. Mayor, I’m a victim of your mental health program," James said in one lengthy video.

Iraq
Iran-backed militias in Iraq reportedly smuggling weapons to arm Russian invaders
[IsraelTimes] Iranian-backed militias in Iraq are smuggling weapons to arm Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, The Guardian reports.

RPGs, anti-tank missiles and Brazilian-designed rocket launcher systems have made their way from Iraq to Ukraine, according to the report, which cites members of the Iranian-backed militias as well as regional intelligence services familiar with the matter.

An Iranian-made Bavar 373 missile system was also donated to Moscow by Iranian authorities, a source who helped organize the transfer is quoted as saying.

RPGs and anti-tank missiles belonging to the Hashd al-Shaabi Shia militia group were transported on March 26 from Iraq to Iran, where they were collected by Russian authorities, who then shipped them to Russia by sea, a commander of the militia branch that controls the crossing tells the British daily.

Hashd al-Shaabi also dismantled Brazilian-designed Astros II rocket launcher systems on April 1 for shipment to Russian forces.

"We don’t care where the heavy weapons go [because we don’t need them at the moment]," one Hashd al-Shaabi source tells the Guardian. "Whatever is anti-US makes us happy."

Senator Joe Manchin: Quit the 'Putin price hike' blame-shifting on inflation already
[HOT AIR] It’s not the first time that Joe Manchin has gotten crosswise with the White House on messaging, but it might be the most dramatic example yet. The Biden team started off their record-inflation day by helpfully reminding everyone that criticism of Joe Biden amounted to lèse majesté, and maybe even treason:

It’s been a long, strange trip from "dissent is patriotic" and "the resistance" on the Left to "criticizing our Dear Leader is treasonous," eh? The criticism in this case is well earned, especially for the gaslighting attempts to claim that inflation only became a problem when Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine. As the above chart shows, annualized inflation went above the 2% target used by the Federal Reserve immediately after the passage of Biden’s bloated American Rescue Act in March 2021, and with the exception of a short pause in the late spring has been accelerating ever since.

No lesser figure than Barack Obama’s lead economic adviser made the same point in much more granularity. Jason Furman’s Twitter thread pointed out some reasons for limited optimism, but also emphasized that inflation in the US has not just been accelerating for a year, but that it’s outpaced EU inflation to boot:

(ISIS) leader along with several suspects in Iraq, a military official said as the terror group continues to pose a threat across the country.

Iraqi counter-terrorism services arrested three ISIS suspects in Anbar and caught two others in Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
Iraq’s top military spokesperson Yehia Rasool said.

The forces also "brought in" two other suspects affiliated to the group with the assistance of the Kurdistan Region’s counter-terrorism directorate, Rasool added, without disclosing further details.

The counter-terror forces have also arrested a prominent ISIS leader, according to Rasool, saying the forces would share more information regarding the figure in the near future.

ISIS remnants are particularly active in parts of northern Iraq that are disputed by Erbil and Baghdad, including in the provinces of Kirkuk, Diyala, and Salahaddin.

The terror group grabbed credit for an attack on a village in southern Kirkuk, saying they have killed at least three civilians and injured four others.

US prosecutors rest case against Islamic State 'Beatle'
[AlMonitor] Prosecutors rested their case Tuesday against an alleged member of the notorious Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
kidnap-and-murder cell known as the "Beatles."

El Shafee Elsheikh, 33, declined the opportunity to testify in his own defense at his trial in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia.

Asked by Judge T.S. Ellis if he wanted to take the stand, Elsheikh said "No," the first time his voice had been heard during the two-week trial.

Elsheikh is charged with the murders of American freelance journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and aid workers Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig, and suspected of the kidnapping of nearly 20 other Westerners in Syria.

Ten European journalists, relief workers and Syrians held hostage by the "Beatles" have testified over the past few days of their brutal treatment at their captors' hands.

Elsheikh's lawyers declined to cross-examine any of the witnesses and presented only 20 minutes of excerpts from interviews he gave to media outlets as his defense.

The interviews were conducted after Elsheikh and another alleged "Beatle," Alexanda Amon Kotey, were captured in January 2018 by a Kurdish militia in Syria.

Unlike now, Elsheikh acknowledged in the interviews that he had interactions with the Western hostages, who dubbed the hostage-takers the "Beatles" because of their British accents.

Elsheikh's lawyers contend that he lied about being a "Beatle" in the interviews so he would be transferred to the United States instead of being put on trial in Iraq, where he would have faced a certain death sentence
...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead...
The final former hostage to testify was Danish photographer Daniel Rye Ottosen, who recounted how he was given 25 blows for his 25th anniversary.

He also recalled having a knife placed against his throat and a gun thrust into his mouth.

The prosecution and defense are to deliver their closing arguments on Wednesday, and the case will go to the jury.

Elsheikh and Kotey were turned over to US forces in Iraq following their capture. They were flown to Virginia in 2020 to face charges of hostage-taking, conspiracy to murder US citizens and supporting a terrorist organization.

Kotey pleaded guilty in September 2021 and is facing life in prison.

The other "Beatle," Mohammed Emwazi, the notorious executioner known as "Jihadi John," was killed by a US dronezap in Syria in 2015.
A young Yazidi woman testified on Monday that American aid worker Kayla Mueller told her she was raped by former Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and threatened with death if she tried to escape.

Lia Mulla, who was captured by Islamic State (IS) members in August 2014 as she tried to flee Iraq's Mount Sinjar with her family, testified through a translator on Monday at the trial of El Shafee Elsheikh, who was allegedly one of Mueller's IS jailers.

Mueller, an aid worker from Arizona, was captured by IS in August 2013 while accompanying her Syrian boyfriend on a trip to a hospital in Aleppo, where he was contracted to repair a satellite dish. She was initially held by the "Beatles" but then was allegedly turned over to Baghdadi, the IS leader who died during a US special forces raid in 2019.

Mulla said she was taken by IS to various locations with other young women after being captured. Eventually, she ended up in a prison where Mueller was being detained. They communicated "mostly with their hands," she said, and a few words of Arabic.

"One day they took her and when they brought her back she was really afraid," Mulla said. "They had told her that IS wanted to marry us off, and if we were to try to run away they would kill us."

A couple of days later, Mulla said she was taken along with Mueller and another Yazidi girl to the home of Abu Sayyaf, a top Baghdadi lieutenant, where they would "treat us like slaves."

- 'DIRTY HOUSE' -
After a week there, she said they were taken to the "dirty house... the place were they took maiden of tender yearss and raped them."

She said Baghdadi came one night and took Mueller away.

When Mueller returned the next morning, "she was very sad, she was very nervous, she was crying," Mulla said. "She had been raped and threatened that if she tried to run away he would kill her."

Mulla said she decided to try to escape and asked Mueller to join her but she declined. "She was afraid that if she was captured, she would be beheaded," she said.

But Mueller asked Mulla to "tell the world" about her if she managed to make it to freedom. Mulla said she slipped out a window, climbed on a generator to get over a wall and ran for a long time. After her escape, she said her brother put her in touch with a friend who was a translator for the Americans and she told them about Mueller.

IS announced Mueller's death in February 2015 and said she was killed in a Jordanian Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
, a claim that was disputed by US authorities.

Foley, Sotloff and Kassig were murdered by IS and videos of their deaths released by the group for propaganda purposes.

Elsheikh and another "Beatle," Alexanda Amon Kotey, were captured in January 2018 by a Kurdish militia in Syria and turned over to US forces in Iraq. They were flown to Virginia in 2020 to face charges of hostage-taking, conspiracy to murder US citizens and supporting a terrorist organization.

Kotey pleaded guilty in September 2021 and is facing life in prison.

"Beatles" executioner Mohammed Emwazi was killed by a US drone in Syria in 2015.

Elsheikh has denied the charges and his lawyers claim his arrest is a case of mistaken identity.
A former Islamic State group member turned cooperating witness has told a US court that an ex-jihadist on federal trial was clearly "more important" than other fighters.

Omer Kuzu testified on Monday that he met El Shafee Elsheikh on at least five occasions. He said while they did not talk much, Mr Elsheikh had an air of importance. Mr Elsheikh, 33, is the highest profile IS fighter to face trial in the US.

Mr Kuzu, who spent four-and-a-half years as an IS member, testified at Mr Elsheikh's trial as part of a plea deal with the US government.

The 26-year-old left his home in Dallas, Texas at age 18 in October 2014, flew to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
and was later smuggled into Syria. He joined the telecommunications office in Raqqa, Syria, then "the capital of IS". He told the court he did "typical IT work" to support the group's battlefield operations.

He was captured by Syrian forces in 2019, and handed over to the FBI
...Formerly one of the world's premier criminal investigation organizations, something for a nation to be proud of. Now it's a political arm of the Deep State oligarchy that is willing to trump up charges, suppress evidence, or take out insurance policies come election time...
. He pleaded guilty in Texas in September 2020 to conspiracy to provide material support to IS.

On the stand on Monday, Mr Kuzu said that while other guards wore traditional Afghan clothes, Mr Elsheikh wore a green military uniform and always carried a Glock pistol. Having a Glock was uncommon, he said, calling it "a symbol of Isis aristocracy".

He said Mr Elsheikh was also "quiet, reserved, almost secretive", which he believed indicated he didn't want to be a target of foreign intelligence agencies.

Mr Kuzu appeared in court in a teal prison jumpsuit. He spoke clearly, often leaning forward into the microphone and saying "yes sir" in response to questions. Asked to identify Mr Elsheikh, he pointed at the defendant and described his clothing. The defendant, always wearing a disposable black face mask, pulled it down during the identification process.

Identification is a key part of the trial. The defence argue Mr Elsheikh was a "simple Isis fighter" not one of the so-called Beatles, and therefore should not be held responsible for what that turban cell did.

Under cross-examination, Mr Kuzu admitted that Mr Elsheikh had never explicitly told him about himself or what he did for IS. But he said "his work was right in front of my eyes".

He also described Mr Elsheikh and Alexanda Kotey - believed to be another "Beatle" who in September pleaded guilty to multiple charges relating to the murder of four American hostages in Syria - as "some sort of a duo or tag team".

snuffies in a foiled attack on Monday in the southern part of the country.

The SNA commanders who led the operation told Radio Mogadishu that the gunnies had attempted to launch an attack on an army base in Dinsoor, a town in the southern region of Bay.

"Somali National Army and ATMIS forces in Dinsoor town of Bay region on Monday repulsed an attack on Army base by al-Shabaab and killed seven terrorists," the state-owned radio reported.

The gunnies often carry out attacks against government and AU bases in southern and central Somalia despite heavy security and army presence in those areas.

The latest onslaught against the terror group comes as government forces have intensified operations against al-Shabaab snuffies across the country during the electioneering period, but the gunnies are still hiding in the rural areas of those regions, conducting ambushes and planting land mines.

2 US men get 14, 16 years in 2017 Minnesota mosque bombing Minnesota
[AlAhram] Two Illinois men who helped bomb a Minnesota mosque in 2017 were sentenced Tuesday to about 16 years and roughly 14 years in prison, far below the 35-year mandatory minimum that each man faced, after victims and prosecutors asked for leniency because the men cooperated and testified against the criminal mastermind of the attack.

Michael McWhorter, 33, was sentenced to just under 16 years in prison and Joe Morris, 26, was sentenced to about 14 years in prison. Both testified in the 2020 trial against Emily Claire Hari,

Iraq
Iraqi judiciary resolves 1,500 cases of people coming from Syria’s Hawl Camp
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

An Iraqi security expert revealed on Tuesday that the Iraqi judiciary has resolved the cases of more than 1,500 people who came from Hawl Camp.

The families returning from Hawl Camp undergo rehabilitation programs with the support of international organizations, and some of these families, who were undergone rehabilitation programmes, were returned to their original areas in Iraq in coordination with the notables and the concerned authorities in the regions inside Iraq.

"The National Security Advisory succeeded in receiving more than 450 families, an average of nearly more than 1,700 people from Hawl Camp," explaining that "the Iraqi judiciary has resolved the cases of more than 1,550 people."

United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
has called for the resolution of the situation of Hawl Camp in northeast Syria, warning that it is a "ticking time bomb".

Last Saturday, a conference was held under the title (Hawl Camp and the obligations of the international community), in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

The security expert said that al-Jada’a camp in Nineveh Governorate, in the west of the country, is currently ready to receive the returnees.

Hawl Camp, the most dangerous camp worldwide, houses no less than 30,000 Iraqi nationals who are either ISIS members or ISIS families.

Hawl Camp is full of Iraqis, and solutions and subsequent steps must be taken to embrace them and restore the contact of children and women with society, since their fathers or husbands were killed or arrested outside Iraq," Abu Raghef said.

During the previous periods, Iraq formed a committee to visit the camp and meet with Iraqi families, in coordination with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) according to Ali Abbas, a front man for the Iraqi Ministry of Immigration, in a previous statement to North Press.

Abu Raghef stressed "The need for civil society organizations, Media and holy mans to work on this issue with international, local and regional support."

Iraq calls the international community to dismantle Hawl Camp, repatriate the citizens and prosecute "terrorists" in their own countries to achieve a sustainable security in the region and in the world, al-Araji said on the sideline of the conference.

Economy
Restaurants Cut Surf and Turf Specials from Menus amid Record Levels of Inflation
[BREITBART] Restaurants across the nation are cutting specific promotions and reworking menu specials amid record inflation levels.

Food prices were up 7.9 percent in February compared to one year ago, and March’s numbers are expected to continue the upward trend when they are released Tuesday.

After one year’s worth of rising inflation, consumers across the country are swapping expensive items for cheaper counterparts, causing retail stores and restaurants to rethink their sales and menu deals.

In January, Beef ’O’ Brady’s CEO Chris Elliott removed the restaurant’s renowned surf and turf special from the menu after seeing signs that consumers were being impacted by rising inflation.

"People are looking for deals; they’re getting hammered everywhere — at the gas station, at the grocery store," Elliot said.

Cyber
US Secret Service, FBI, Europol Bust One Of World's Biggest Hacking Sites, Arrest 21-year-old Founder
[SAHARAREPORTERS] US and international law enforcement agencies have seized control of a popular website where hackers have advertised data stolen from American consumers and corporations.

This is the latest in a long-running effort to crack down on forums where cybercriminals congregate.

Tagged TOURNIQUET, the operation was said to have been carried out by the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Secret Service.

"This domain has been seized" by the FBI, US Secret Service and Justice Department, read a notice Tuesday on the home page of RaidForums, a website known more for advertising hacked data in English rather than in Russian, the preferred language of other criminal forums.

Law enforcement agencies from the United Kingdom, Sweden and elsewhere were involved in the seizure, according to the statement, CNN
...formerly the Cable News Network, now who know what it might stand for...
reports.

With over 530,000 registered members, according to threat intelligence firm Recorded Future, RaidForums had great reach and influence among low to mid-level cybercriminals.

RaidForums' 21-year-old alleged founder, Diogo Santos Coelho, was arrested in the United Kingdom on January 31, and remains in jug pending "the resolution of his extradition proceedings," the Justice Department said.

It's the latest move in a sustained international law enforcement effort to upend the marketplaces where cybercrime flourishes.

German police last week seized the computer servers of Hydra, a popular Russian dark web market connected to $5 billion in transactions since 2015.

"The takedown of this online market for the resale of hacked or stolen data disrupts one of the major ways cybercriminals profit from the large-scale theft of sensitive personal and financial information," Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. of the Justice Department's Criminal Division in a written statement.

US authorities had access to RaidForums' computer infrastructure for several months before the seizure was announced, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the matter.

That likely gave authorities valuable insight into who bought and sold hacked data during that time.

The seizure of RaidForums is a blow to crooks looking for an easy way to profit from data breaches. But the underground market for stolen financial and personal data will likely continue to flourish, analysts said, because there are numerous other online bazaars for trading that data.

Elon Musk Now Able to Straight Up Buy Twitter, Pursue Hostile Takeover After Refusing Board Membership
[IJR] Elon Musk, CEO of Space X and Tesla, bought a huge share of Twitter but has turned down a seat on the social media giant’s board.

This has everyone asking, is Musk positioning himself to take over Twitter?

Elon Musk bought 9.2 percent of Twitter, which makes him the largest shareholder in the social media company, CNN
...formerly the Cable News Network, now who know what it might stand for...
reported.

Many then assumed that his next move would be to join the Twitter board. But he has opted out of taking a seat, ABC News reported.

"Elon’s appointment to the board was to become officially effective on April 9, but Elon shared that same morning that he would not be joining the board. I believe this is for the best," Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal announced.

Many assumed Musk would be joining the board since he tweeted over the weekend several suggestions for changes to Twitter, such as making it ad free, even though 90 percent of Twitter’s 2021 revenue came from advertisement, ABC News reported.

Agrawal said that Twitter’s board understood the risks of having Musk as a member. But the board "believed having Elon as a fiduciary of the company, where he, like all board members, has to act in the best interests of the company and all our shareholders, was the best path forward," Agrawal wrote.

Having Musk on the board would have been in the board’s best interest because, though he is already the largest shareholder, the board was offering him a seat on the condition that he not own more than 14.9 percent of the company’s outstanding stock, ABC News reported.

German court charges IS returnee over alleged slave abuse

-held territory in Syria has been charged with crimes against humanity and other offenses, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

The woman, identified only as Jalda A. in keeping with German privacy laws, was arrested upon her arrival back in Germany on Oct. 7. Before her repatriation, she had been held captive by Kurdish forces since late 2017.

She was charged with membership in a foreign terrorist organization, crimes against humanity, war crimes and being an accessory to genocide, prosecutors said in a statement.

The suspect traveled in April 2014 via The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
to Syria, according to prosecutors, where she quickly married an IS fighter and gave birth to a son the following year. When her first husband died, she married two other men in succession.

She lived with the third man in and near the Syrian city of Mayadin from September to October 2017, prosecutors said, adding that the husband kept a Yazidi woman as a slave and regularly raped her with the suspect's knowledge.

The suspect also physically abused the woman "almost every day," according to prosecutors. She allegedly punched and kicked the woman, pulled her hair, and slammed her head against the wall, and on one occasion hit the woman in the head with a flashlight.

In addition, prosecutors said, the suspect constantly watched the woman and repeatedly told her to pray according to Islamic custom, an act that "served the stated goal of the IS, to eradicate the Yazidi faith."

The indictment was filed last month at the state court in Hamburg, which will have to decide whether and when to open a trial.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Raja Salameh's release request approved, bail lowered to LBP 200 billion
[An Nahar] The Mount Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
accusatory body led by Judge Pierre Francis on Tuesday approved a ruling to release Raja Salameh from jail, dismissing an appeal filed by Mt. Lebanon Prosecutor Judge Ghada Aoun.

The accusatory body also agreed to slash the bail value from LBP 500 billion to LBP 200 billion.

Salameh's lawyer had recently said that the LBP 500 billion bail that Investigative Judge Nicolas Mansour had ordered for the release of Salameh was "unprecedented" in the history of the Lebanese Justice Palace.

"The amount is unreasonable and illogical," lawyer Marwan al-Khoury said, after having filed an appeal demanding that the bail amount be slashed.

Mansour had ordered the release of Raja Salameh, Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh's brother, on a bail of LBP 500 billion, but Mount Lebanon Prosecutor Judge Ghada Aoun appealed against the decision and demanded that he be kept in jug.

Aoun had charged Raja with "facilitating money laundering" after he was arrested over financial misconduct.

The same charge was filed against Ukrainian national Anna Kosakova, who jointly owns a company with Raja Salameh.

The judge is also overseeing several legal cases against Riad Salameh, who has repeatedly failed to show up at hearings.

A few months later, two more agents were removed from the witness list. Special Agent Jayson Chambers was removed from the case because it was discovered that he was attempting to profit from the case. He was launching a private security firm, which would benefit from his work on the Whitmer case.

Special Agent Henrik Impola was also removed from the case after he had been accused of perjuring himself on another case. Apparently, the FBI found it easier to remove him than defend him.

When police arrived, they found a broken window through which the thug had tried to enter. They also found the thug on the ground, weighing roughly 25 grams more than he did when he arrived, having been shot once in the head by the homeowner. The would-be intruder was transported to the hospital, where he was admitted at death's door.

Pro-tip: The best way to get your head ventilated is to go after a gun owner’s child.

The villain had apparently tried to enter the residence at several points before breaking the window. "The suspect attempted several ways to gain entry into the back of the home, including entering through a child’s bedroom window," Chief Deputy Mason Bynum told news hounds.

Dale County deputies confirmed that the homeowner and the now-horizontal hooligan do not know each other.

No charges have been filed against the homeowner.

This is a textbook example of how to handle an attempted break-in. The homeowner didn’t leave the house to investigate; he called the police and then kept an eye on the scumbag. When the dimwitted freebooter broke a window to enter a child’s room, the homeowner was ready and stopped the invasion with a single shot to the noggin. That tells me someone has been practicing.

Repentant Bandit Attacks Former Colleagues, Rescues 38 Abducted Victims In Zamfara
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

A repentant bandit popularly known as Smally in the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has led some courageous locals to the enclaves of bandidos where the criminals were engaged, leaving scores dead and freeing about 38 kidnapped victims.

According to DAILY POST, Smally who was not happy with the killings and kidnapping of innocent citizens in the state decided to lead the operation against his former colleagues in their hideouts.

Umaru Usman, a resident of the community said, "The repentant bandit first killed some of the bandidos and freed 16 kidnapped victims and took them to a nearby bush around Sakajiki village from where they were evacuated by security operatives.

"After some time, another 22 were also freed and brought out to the same spot and also evacuated by security operatives and moved to Gusau."

Umaru Usman explained that the operation which took place around Dajin Yamma forest in the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area brought jubilation among residents of the area.

On Monday, April 11, 2022, the state police commissioner, Ayuba Elkanan, in a press briefing in Gusau, said 39 kidnapped victims were rescued after a gun duel with bandidos.

But according to some residents of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, the kidnapped victims were released by Smally and his group and not any security operative in the state, pointing out that the police are always looking for cheap publicity.

"The axis had been in total control of the recalcitrant bandidos before Smally and his group courageously confronted the deadly murderous Moslems in their enclaves and neutralised scores of them (bandidos) while others escaped with various degrees of injuries," one of the residents said.

Deadly attacks have raged across Zamfara state where bandidos have thrived.

Farming and herding communities in the state have long been terrorised by gangs who raid villages, steal cattle and kidnap residents for ransom.

Dozens of farmers have been killed as hundreds of hectares of farmland remain uncultivated.

Most of the slain victims were trapped on their farms and killed.

In 2019, the state government entered a peace agreement with the button men.

About 15 brand new Hilux vehicles and cash gifts were also given to leaders of different 'repentant' gangs of bandidos by the governor in 2020.

Governor Bello Matawalle also approved millions of naira to be given to the 'repentant' bandidos as compensation.

"Those bandidos have different groups, so if they say they repent, the governor will give them a Hilux vehicle; unfortunately they are now using the vehicles to carry out attacks," a military source had told SaharaReporters.

"It's so sad, he called it a peace and reconciliation programme, but all you need to be rich now in Zamfara is to take up arms against the people."

The bandit leaders who got the vehicles include Na Shama, Sani Shaidan, Mohammadu Bello Halilu and Bage Waye.

Other beneficiaries were identified as Kachalla, Ado, Busniya, Dunbulu and Gajere.

Texas Holds Up Truck Traffic to Change Mexico's Migration Politics
[Breitbart] Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) is choking truck traffic across the U.S.-Mexico border to get Mexico’s government to help block the migrant flood invited by President Joe Biden’s border chief, says Todd Bensman, a Texas-based expert at the Center for Immigration Studies.

“If Texas wants to back those trucks up severely, they can do it as much as they want,” Bensman told Breitbart News.

The point is to get governors and mayors in northern Mexico where the maquiladoras [oursourced U .S outsourcing factories] are, to start complaining to [Mexican President Andrés Manuel López] Obrador, and Obrador is then going to complain to the American ambassador. Then it’s going to go to the State Department, and then Biden is going to have to do something.

Bensman posted a video of the resulting cross-border traffic jams on Friday afternoon:

Abbot signed the safety directive on April 6, telling the Texas Department of Public Safety:

As you have explained, the cartels that smuggle illicit contraband and people across our southern border do not care about the condition of the vehicles they send into Texas any more than they care who overdoses from the deadly fentanyl on board. In response to this threat, which is projected to grow in the coming months, I hereby direct the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to conduct enhanced safety inspections of vehicles as they cross international ports of entry into Texas. These inspections should begin immediately to help ensure that Texans are not endangered by unsafe vehicles and their unsafe drivers.

Cross-border traffic is falling fast. Frieghtwaves.com reported Friday:

At the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge, 2,516 commercial trucks crossed on Thursday, a 35% decline compared to the same day last week before Abbott’s measures were announced, according to CBP data.

Commercial truck traffic at Laredo’s Colombia-Solidarity Bridge was 2,233 on Thursday, an 11% decline compared to last Thursday.

Texas’ decision to carefully check the cross-border trucks for drugs will quickly get the angry attention of powerful U.S. business groups, said Bensman. Those groups have outsourced their supply of critical food and manufacturing components to Mexican farms and factories, known as maquiladoras.

Trucks can bypass the traffic jams on the Texas border, but only by taking a 1,250-mile detour through Mexico to reach the entry at Nogales, Arizona.

Huge blast in Sidon town kills Amal member, injures at least 5
[An Nahar] An explosion destroyed a building in southern Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
early on Tuesday, killing one person and wounding several others, a Lebanese security official said.

The blast in the town of Banaafoul, near the port city of Sidon, demolished the two-floor building that had served as the local municipality headquarters and a scout center for the Amal Movement headed by Parliament Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri
...Speaker of the Lebanese parliament, head of the Amal Shiite party aligned with Hezbollah, a not very subtle sock puppet of the Medes and Persians...
According to the security official, the dead person was the son of the town’s mayor, both of whom belong to Amal. Five people were maimed, the official said, revising his earlier figure of seven maimed.

Citing "preliminary information," the Amal Movement said in an official statement that an "electric short circuit" led to a fire that resulted in the earth-shattering kaboom of oxygen canisters that had been stored in the building during the Covid-19 crisis.

The blast also caused material damage to nearby buildings and cars.

The security official had said that the earth-shattering kaboom may have been caused by diesel fuel stored inside the building.

Other unconfirmed reports said the building contained a weapons cache. Army personnel sealed off the building as they searched through the rubble for clues and casualties. MTV meanwhile reported an altercation between army troops and Amal members in the wake of the blast.

Online videos showed a fire ripping through the building prior to the earth-shattering kaboom. Witnesses also confirmed that they saw flames and heard sounds resembling fireworks before the blast.

Samira Mustafa, whose nearby house received some damage, said she saw smoke and the sound of popping before the earth-shattering kaboom.

"I ran as stones fell on my head," she said as she sat with neighbors on Tuesday morning, discussing the incident.

Combat news from Mariupol: Russian perspective
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

About a thousand Ukrainian marines surrender in Mariupol - media
[REGNUM] About a thousand Ukrainian soldiers from the 36th Naval Infantry Brigade of the Naval Forces of Ukraine are surrendering in Mariupol to units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of State Security of the DPR, military commander Alexander Sladkov said on the evening of April 12 in his Telegram channel.

According to him, we are talking about detachments of Ukronazis who defended themselves at the Metallurgical Plant named after.

Among those surrendering are about 400 wounded, some of whom cannot move independently. In addition, it is reported that at least 800 more fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been taken prisoner.

According to Alexander Sladkov, the count of prisoners has not yet been completed.

There has been no official information about this yet.

Escape attempt by "Azov:" Our commanders "sling mud" at Russian soldiers
[REGNUM] Ukrainian Nikita Timonin, who fled from the Azov battle, denied Kyiv's accusations that the Russian army allegedly used chemical weapons against the Armed Forces of Ukraine during a special operation.

Timonin said that on the morning of April 12, he fled from the territory of Azovstal in the city of Mariupol (DPR) and that he was caught by the fighters of the People's Militia of the Republic.

When asked if the Russians used chemical weapons, he replied:

"This is a complete lie. There has never been any use of chemical weapons since February 24. Why do they say something? Most likely, to "raise" the world community. Our commanders are trying so hard to throw mud at the Russian soldiers."

From "Azov" * do not leave alive - who fled from the battalion
[REGNUM] Many who are in Azov (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) in the city of Mariupol (DPR) would like to flee, but the battalion command ordered them to be shot, said former Ukrainian military man Nikita Timonin, who fled from Azovstal.

Talking about the situation inside the regiment, he said that the people there were completely demoralized.

“Many people want to surrender or run away. They are afraid to run away, because, as I heard, there was an order that everyone they see "in civilian life" should be shot immediately on the spot," said Nikita Timonin.

When asked if there was an option to "move away", Timonin replied: "Move away, I think who will try, if they see him, they will kill him . " He himself was able to escape, he says that he was “lucky, probably” : “I completely changed my clothes: uniform, weapons, I left everything there.”

There are many wounded and killed in "Azov" in Mariupol
[REGNUM] Among those Ukrainian militants who are on the territory of Azovtali in the city of Mariupol (DPR), there are many wounded, many killed, Nikita Timonin, who fled from Azov (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation), said on April 12.

“Many wounded, many “two hundred[s],” said Nikita Timonin.
"200" is the Russian cargo code for dead, i.e. coffins
Speaking about the behavior of the commanders, he called it "ambiguous," explaining:

"They are trying to tell that some kind of help is coming to us. At one time they try to raise morale, but at the same time, as I said, they say that if someone leaves, we will shoot."

He added that, in his opinion, the commanders "do not care" because they are "sitting in a bunker" and do not risk anything. They don't "run the streets."

Kadyrov called the surrender of Marines of the Ukrainian Navy in Mariupol the right choice
[REGNUM] The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, made a statement about more than a thousand Ukrainian soldiers who had surrendered in Mariupol from the Naval Infantry Brigade of the Naval Forces of Ukraine on April 12 in his official Telegram channel.

"More than a thousand marines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine surrendered today in Mariupol. Among them, hundreds of wounded. This is the right choice," Kadyrov wrote.

According to the head of Chechnya, only small groups remained with the enemy, they do not know what to do with the wounded, where to turn, and for some reason they are afraid to go out with a white flag to the Russian troops.

As the head of Chechnya clarifies, there are about 200 wounded in the depths of Azovstal who cannot receive medical care, and for whom it would be better to end the resistance and return home.

"I appeal to those who are still holed up in the basements and tunnels of the plant: you know that we treat prisoners like human beings. Come out! Think about your own and other people's families, as more than a thousand marines did today," Kadyrov called on the Ukrainian military.

Earlier , REGNUM reported about a thousand Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered, according to the military correspondent Oleksandr Sladkov, in Mariupol. Official confirmation of this information has not yet been received.

Border Patrol agents are now apprehending between 5,000 and 8,000 migrants per day along the southwest border.
[Breitbart] Migrants Surge to Typically Quiet Texas Border Sector

Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 2,900 migrants in a single week. The apprehensions appear to show the migrant surge spreading into the fourth-busiest of the five Texas-based Border Patrol sectors.

Laredo Sector Chief Patrol Agent Carl Landrum tweeted photos from the apprehension of more than 2,900 migrants during a single week. In addition, the agents stopped another 560 migrants from crossing the border illegally from Mexico.

During the month of February, the most recent statistics available from CBP, Laredo Sector agents apprehended 9,498 migrants. This was up nearly 12 percent from the year before.

The March Southwest Land Border Encounters report from CBP is expected to be out this week and, according to unofficial numbers obtained by Breitbart Texas, will reveal the apprehension of more than 200,000 migrants — a record for the Biden-era.

Border Patrol agents are now apprehending between 5,000 and 8,000 migrants per day along the southwest border. With the announcement of the end of the Title 42 coronavirus protection protocol in May, that number is expected to jump to as high as 18,000 migrants per day, according to a leaked document obtained and reviewed by Breitbart.

In response, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced plans to beef up the state’s Operation Lone Star border security operation and bus released migrants to Washington, D.C.

“Texans have a backbone and the will to secure our border,” Gov. Abbott stated in an April 6 press conference. “Two things that Joe Biden does not have.”

Catholic charity says staff, family killed in Mariupol
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Two Ukrainian Caritas staff and five of their relatives have been killed in Mariupol, the Catholic charity said Tuesday, adding they likely died a month ago.

"The tragic attack probably took place on March 15, when a tank fired shots at the building of the Caritas center in Mariupol, killing the two staff members and five of their relatives," it said in a statement.

A report on the Vatican's news portal, Vatican News, said the tank was Russian, citing unnamed "local Caritas sources."

Russian troops have been battling for weeks to take control of strategically located Mariupol, ahead of an anticipated massive onslaught across eastern Ukraine, as defending forces try desperately to hold them back.

Difficulties in communicating with those inside the besieged city have meant details of civilian casualties have been scarce and hard to verify.

Caritas said it was not able to definitively say what had happened, but it believed the two female staff members "and their family took refuge in the center during the shelling."

"This dramatic news leaves the Caritas family horrified and shocked," said Aloysius John, secretary general of Caritas Internationalis, slamming "the indiscriminate massacre of civilians."

Tanks are obsolete, apparently since 1919: Military History Visualized breaks it down
[YouTube] Since the Russian Invasion of Ukraine (2022) a lot of statements about the "end of the tank" came up. Most of these statements are old, very old and they show up every few decades, particularly if a new technology is invented and/or some factions suffers - for whatever reason - a certain amount of tank losses. This video discusses the various factors about the Russian Invasion of Ukraine and a lot of the previous arguments that often have not changed for decades and generally still invalid, since people forget combined arms warfare.

I would go so far as saying the current "modern warfare" solutions currently deployed will soon be a thing of the past.

Battle Drones and remote control attack weapons cost far less, are easier to produce, require less support personnel to maintain, and can be single or multi-used.

But, Technical Logistics and Rare Earth Raw Materials will be the Achilles Tendon for many nations.

But there will always be a citizenry with firearms scaring the hell out of, or "retiring" a few field officers during any battle.

#7  ...Part of the problem here is that the Russians don't have anything resembling a functioning modern air force over Ukraine - they have a poorly supplied, disorganized, and unscheduled airline that drops bombs at the end of its runs.

If there was coordinated, properly employed air power from the Russian side, the Ukranians would be having a much, MUCH tougher time of it, even allowing for the extraordinary bravery they've shown.

Overall, though, the basic point stands - the tank is much like Samuel Clemens; "the rumors of (its) death are greatly exaggerated."

#9  As a retired 12A (Armor/Cavalry) Officer, i find this amusing. The rumors of the end of armor as a combat dominant force are premature as always. Like all things, context is everything when predicting major turning points from afar.

In the case of the Russian armor performance in Ukraine. one wonders about the motives for linear, road-bound convoys, and the apparent absence of significant flanking security out at least to ATGM (Anti-Tank Guided Munitions)ranges? All the more puzzling if terrain mobility problems made keeping to the hardstand critical. Given that possibility you encounter the sniper-countersniper dynamic, and the MANPAD threat to aviation as flank security, but this is all about creeping advance movement with good IPB (Intel Prep of the Battlespace) and drones to neutralize that threat. All this argues as others here have observed that the paucity of infantry and lack of combat power density on the flanks made movement of heavy armor and the log tail prone to easy kills. Even arty prep on flanking dominant terrain seemed lacking. It seemed like it was just a shooting gallery and the conscripts were apt to bail quickly as morale plummeted?

Oh... they will still be around. RCTs (Regimental Combat Teams) like the ones the Federated Suns ran were 5 regiments of infantry, 3 of armor and 1 BattleMech regiment.

I can see something like that in our world if 'Mechs ever get developed. Just don't get stepped on if you are a tank.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Putin on the goals and timing of the operation in Ukraine
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin

[ColonelCassad] From today's statements by Putin on the subject of NWO in Ukraine.

1. The operation is progressing according to plan. All goals set at the very beginning will be achieved.

2. The timing of the operation is determined by the intensity of hostilities and the desire to minimize their own losses.

3. Negotiations with Ukraine reached a dead end, as Ukraine violated the agreements concluded in Istanbul.

4. The decision to start the operation was correct and timely, and the conflict itself was inevitable - Russia was left no choice.

5. The sanctions blitzkrieg against Russia failed, but Russia does not plan to close, and it will not be possible to close it.

6. The USSR, being in sanctions isolation, achieved great success in the space program. Russia will also be able to follow this path.

7. The US plans to fight in Ukraine to the last Ukrainian. Ukraine is a means to an end for the West.

8. The provocation in Bucha is just as fake as the staged chemical attacks in Syria.

9. Russia in previous decades was addicted to Western technology, and now it is facing the consequences.

10. Russia, Belarus and Ukraine are a triune people, part of which is now trying to use the West in their own interests.

We are waiting for the start of the 2nd phase of the operation in Ukraine, which was previously announced by Shoigu.

More from Boris Rozhin:
Surrender of the 36th Marine Brigade in Mariupol
[ColonelCassad] Good news from Mariupol.

It is reported that the enemy forces that defended Ilyich's plant capitulated.

On the night of 10 to 11, they tried to break through, but after suffering heavy losses, they retreated to the factory or scattered around the district (where some of them were killed or captured.

Since they already felt a critical shortage of ammunition and other supplies, they decided to surrender.

The process has already begun.

Sladkov reports that about 1,000 people surrendered, of which 300 were wounded (of which 90 were severe).

Pegov writes about two capitulated battalions and 200 wounded. (The 501st battalion capitulated earlier)

In general, this looks like the largest surrender since the beginning of the war.

From Andrey Chervonets:
Fiasco of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and "Azov" in Mariupol
[Chernovec] Military correspondent Semyon reports urgent news

Two battalions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine surrendered in Mariupol

With the morning, this is almost a thousand soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Captured Marine of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Mariupol told about the deception by the commanders
[Chernovec] The Marine of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who, as part of the convoy, tried to escape from Mariupol, told how they were agitated to try to break through.

That they are expected in the area of Zachatovka (this is in the 30-kilometer rear of the allied forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and the DPR, and Zachatovka itself is 50 km from Mariupol).

But there was no help, they were deceived. The fact that another battalion of Marines surrendered a week ago, they also did not know. If such information had reached them, they would have laid down their arms after their colleagues.

By the way, these interviews show that leaflets are not such an outdated propaganda tool. An oversight that needs to be taken into account for the future.

P.S:
Judging by the interrogations of prisoners, 90% of "Azov" is a "support platoon", staffed exclusively by cooks and drivers, with a rank no higher than a sergeant. And as you dig, all eight years in the ATO, awards and gratitude for the killing of civilians.

Defend Yourselves, We’re Freeborn Nigerians, Not Fulani Slaves, Governor Ortom Charges
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Samuel Ortom, Benue State Governor has again lamented the gruesome murder of 23 persons in fresh attacks on two communities by the suspected Fulani
... a peculiarly brutal tribe of Moslem herdsmen infesting Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and probably other places that are light on law and order and heavy on tribal identity...
herdsmen on Monday night.

Subsequently, the governor directed his people to rise up to defend themselves forthwith, a statement by Nathaniel Ikyur, Chief Press Secretary to the governor on Tuesday, said.

No fewer than 8 persons were mowed down on Monday night by suspected Fulani herdsmen who invaded Mbadwem in the Guma local government area and 15 in Tiortyu in the Tarka local government area of the state.

Scores of others were maimed and are receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in the state.

Ortom, who was reportedly visibly angry, said, "It is becoming increasingly glaring every day that my people are now an endangered species and so we can no longer wait for help from anywhere.

"My people will have to rise up to the occasion to defend themselves and their heritage against the Fulani army of occupation."

"We are law-abiding citizens. We have cried for help against these invaders but nothing is forthcoming. We are left alone and it looks like it is a deliberate strategy. Now we have only one option; to defend ourselves or get extinct. This is a case for our survival.

"We have been accommodating of other people in our land but our hospitality is misconstrued as weakness. We are not a conquered people. We will never be. We are freeborn citizens of Nigeria," the governor added.

Kulgam gunfight: One of two slain militants was active for five years, police say
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Police on Tuesday identified the two Jaish faceless myrmidons killed in an overnight firefight with security forces in Kulgam district of south Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
as Jameel Pasha alias Usman Chachu, a Pak and Sameer Sofi son of Farooq Ahmad Sofi of Amshipora, Shopian. Two cops were maimed in the shootout.

Quoting sources, news agency GNS reported that Pasha was active since five years in Kulgam-Shopian belt and had a history of cases including attacks on police and security forces, abduction of forces personnel, IED attacks and weapon looting against him.

Besides, he was also instrumental in recruitment of youth into holy warrior folds, sources said.

As per sources, the slain faceless myrmidons were part of the group that escaped after a brief shootout in Chaki Samad area of Kulgam on April 9.

The encounter broke out on Monday evening on a specific input regarding movement of faceless myrmidons in a vehicle on Manzgam-Aharbal axis after which a special joint team of Kulgam Police and Army’s 9 & 34 RR was constituted and at about 17:50 hours, a police spokesperson said, adding, "a three-wheeler vehicle (tempo) was spotted near Khur-Batpora moving in suspicious condition and was chased and challenged."

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
the faceless myrmidons travelling in the vehicle jumped out and resorted to "indiscriminate firing towards the joint team," the front man said adding the fire was effectively retaliated. However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
in the initial firefight, two of the Police personnel got critically maimed and were evacuated amidst the heavy firing to 92 Base Hospital (BB Cant Srinagar) where their condition is stable now.

He said the encounter which started at twilight lasted for the whole night and ended up with the killing of the two holy warriors.

Police said a large cache of arms and ammunition including one AK47 rifle, 3 AK47 Magazine, 36 AK 47 rounds, one Pistol, one Pistol Magazine, five Pistol rounds, one Grenade, one BP Pouch, and weapon Oil Bottle was recovered from the site of the encounter.

#1  Well they're both inactive now.

Jameel Pasha alias Usman 'Chacha' [uncle] was Paki. His known name may be an alias too, you never know with ISI. The other dead 'un is a Sameer Ahmed Sofi, local, skipped for training to POK then returned.

'Active for years' because of the liberal administrations, Islamist legislators and legals covering for cross border traders etc. All that changed when our hands were untied in Kashmir.

Early 1919. Kolchak is coming
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Oleg Ayrapetov

[REGNUM] At the beginning of 1919, in the Urals, the command of the Red Army tried to regain the lost initiative. Immediately after the defeat of the 3rd Army of the Soviet Eastern Front, Stalin and Dzerzhinsky arrived in Vyatka, where the red units had withdrawn, in order to clarify the situation. Stalin immediately drew the right conclusions from what had happened - the exhaustion of the troops by continuous six-month battles, poor supplies, the lack of reserves behind the extended front line, the headquarters being too far from the battlefield. He informed Moscow that if urgent measures were not taken to restore the combat capability of the 3rd Army, Vyatka might also fall.

The film is quite good and showed Kolchak as a sympathetic character, which is a very hard thing to do given 70+ years of Soviets characterizing him as evil.

Good call. The Fed jumped in and 'cleaned up the mess' after Lehman and Bear Stearns fell. This time the PBiC will jump in and lease enough ships to absorb all of Russia's commodities so the market can stabilize.

Russia dominates the Black Sea ports. Chinese container ships can store Russian grain and so forth indefinitely. Trade will be done in renminbi backed by Russian oil and gold.

True. This explains why the non-western world is now coming together to support alternatives to the dollar and dollar blackmail. If the US is determined to destroy the trading and payments regime that it created and upheld for 49 years, then China, India and Russia will be more than happy to help. Commodities rule.

People in Washington want the war to go on for at least a year. By then Ukraine will look like Germany in 1945. Reconstruction will cost the US and the West over $1 trillion.

Along with sanctions, the debt explosion to fund Ukraine is another reason the dollar is going to be blown out. Goodbye reserve currency status.

It matters if a nation's policies are based on global trade flows that leave the nation with enormous trade deficits and 30 trillion in debt.

Hermit kingdoms can't rely on other nations to pay their bills and fund their profligate spending. Shrink the trade deficit and the debt to zero before that even becomes more than a pipe dream.

#32  #28 Don't the Bidens have a cousin named Frank? Just sayin'...

Frank is Joe's little brother.

Joe Biden’s brother, Francis ‘Frank’ Biden, 66, won the prize for the most bizarre Biden family bust when he allegedly stuffed two DVDs from a Florida Blockbuster down his pants in October 2003, cops said. He was 49 at the time. He never showed up for a scheduled court hearing on the attempted theft and the state attorney declined to prosecute, according to records obtained by the Miami New Times.

He had more serious scrapes with the law. He was pinched in August 2003 for drunk driving in Fort Lauderdale, earning six months probation. He was arrested a year later for driving with a suspended license but avoided jail again by spending three months in rehab.

In 1999, Biden was a passenger in a car involved in a fatal drunk-driving accident. He was found partially liable for the death of 38-year-old William Albano, and owes his family almost $1 million dollars, according to the Daily Mail.

Today, Frank Biden works as a senior advisor to the Berman Law Group. He did not respond to request for comment, but has said previously that he has been “sober for a long time.”

#37  *shrug* Rantburg has watched the G kids grow up, just as they watched the trailing daughters. While I’m sure it was very rewarding for someone to help rehabilitate the younger Mr. Biden, we here did not have that pleasure. Though we have indeed converted an idiot or two to delightful sensibility over the years, to our mutual benefit.

I don't understand why so many Americans support Biden. He's obviously running America into the ground.

Obviously, indeed. According to the polls, it’s just that the decreasing number who support President Biden is increasingly loud. Also, the original number of his supporters was inflated by all those imaginary Americans who voted in key states, and key precincts in those states in 2020. Millions of them have been removed from the voter rolls since then, and in a number of states the registration and voting procedures tightened up since then.

#38  Also, it's human nature to be loath to admit an obvious mistake, and nobody is more human (in their own mind) than a liberal. My staunch democrat neighbor is reduced to grinding his teeth anytime the discussion comes around to gas, food prices or world affairs and I cheerfully drawl, "Well, you voted for that..."

#39  #31 Don't worry about the dollar
It matters if a nation's policies are based on global trade flows that leave the nation with enormous trade deficits and 30 trillion in debt.

US imports from China are now twice what they were under Trump: about $700 billion annually. The US trade deficit was out of control before Biden. Now it's astronomical.

Lebanese queue for bread amid wheat shortages
[An Nahar] Some bakeries had already closed their doors when others threatened of closing on Monday night, as bakeries announced they do not have sufficient quantities of wheat to produce bread, urging officials for a fast solution.

General Confederation of Lebanese Workers head Bechara al-Asmar warned Tuesday that there is a scarce quantity of wheat in the bakeries that can barely last for 10 days, urging officials to act swiftly and not to lift subsidies on wheat.

A person had been reportedly injured in a shooting in front of a bakery in the southern suburbs of Beirut, as people queued on Monday to secure their bread, amid promises that the crisis will soon ease.

Economy Minister Amin Salam had promised that a solution will be reached by today, Tuesday, as the central Bank failed to secure funds for the imported subsidized wheat.

He said the funds will be secured.

"Cabinet has decided in its latest session to dedicate $15 million for wheat but the Central Bank hasn't paid the sum yet," al-Asmar said.

LBCI meanwhile said it has learned that Prime Minister Najib Miqati and Minister of Finance Youssef al-Khalil have signed a decision to exceptionally withdraw $15 million from Leb

Agriculture Minister Abbas Haj Hassan denied the withdrawal, saying that Cabinet will convene in the upcoming hours.

He assured that wheat subsidies won't be lifted any time soon.

#3  I suspect not. They tried it once, and it really didn’t work. I expect more emigration.
