My comment from the article below on Russian nukes on the Slava class sinking:
#7 ^^^^^Ref the above, is this connected to the Turks suddenly re-stating a limit on Russian Naval access? It looks like the depth might be 1000 to 1500 meters from a quick map recon, but the middle quickly drops off to 2500 meters. Someone in Istanbul might be very interested in poking around the wreck.

I hope the counter move is an invasion of the Gallipoli peninsula. We will wave the NATO mandatory response and just watch. Turkey has left the NATO sphere long ago anyway.

There's a newish book about it that has more details. Apparently it helped that the Nazi intelligence officer assigned to it was eager for a big catch and that the senior analyst who Hitler trusted to assess the documents had soured on Nazism.

Over the course of a weekend Montagu wrote The Man Who Never Was (1953), which sold two million copies and formed the basis for a 1956 film.
and, btw, the Modern Monetary Theory devotees are not conceding anything --- blaming inflation on 'unique and unforeseeable circumstances.

News for you Bubba, the old republic died decades ago. The concentration of power has far exceeded the point where it can be saved. We're at the point where the Founders wrote Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient Causes; and accordingly all Experience hath shewn, that Mankind are more disposed to suffer, while Evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the Forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security.
We might get a second republic but only through blood and tears cause those with the power will not go willingly.

I have seen clusters of this sort in the past. Cancer in Sparrows Point area and brain cancer about paper mill in Westernport Maryland. Then at that later location hilltops barren. No tress would grow for years. Now tress are growing after plant closure. Curiously oral and lung cancer among people who never smoked or chewed tobacco. Just my casual observations as a layman. Lung cancer especially among women I blame on shower inhalation of aerosol particulates. Then oral cancers from processed water. In areas as far I can tell not from chewing tobacco or smoking.

Since about 1880 Western populations have been marinating themselves in what could be called a "chemical soup" -- the ever increasing number and amount of manmade materials, usually side effects of industrial processes, dumped into the environment for everyone to ingest, inhale, absorb and mix with the DNA they hand down to the next generation. Add to that the scarcely researched side effects of the many forms electromagnetic radiation, also increasing in variety and intensity over the same time frame. Mysteries like this cited one have been popping up for over a century now and will only get worse given the trend.

In 1880 people died a lot younger and of diseases that we have since tamed. Particulate matter? Back then nearly everyone cooked and/or heated their homes with coal or wood. There were no 'white' Christmases in cities. Move about any significant distance, you traveled by train. Again, surrounded by coal and wood burning.
Now they live longer to discover newer means of dying of conditions that would never had arose if they had the life span of that time. Statistical medical analysis didn't even exist as a practice back then. If there were unusual clusters outside of the observed natural contagions, there was no one to figure it out.

I agree with alignment of USA, India and Russia but I also added Israel. Now we have a NATO of Asia forming and we are the odd man out. Canada, Latin America, Arab areas, Africa, and even Australia are poor friends at this time. I should think South Korea, Vietnam and particularly Japan must be very concerned. I see Israel will drift towards Russia as India is now doing. Russia offers balance whereas China represents absorption. Frankly Europe is a no show. A bureaucratic nightmare of self absorbed elites.

- price of oil is way way up and China imports over 10 million barrels per day
- price and availability of other products including for example, wheat, copper and electrical equipment are also major problems

Mearsheimer predicted this war would result from America's foolish encouragement of Ukraine to seek to join NATO and create "a western bulwark" within striking distance of Moscow.
An intelligent approach according to Mearsheimer would be to ensure Ukrainian neutrality and distance from the US. Ukraine should have been nuclear-armed and independent.
Instead of this sensible solution we have the worst of all possible worlds: a perpetual proxy war which neither Russia nor the US can afford to be seen to lose. It is a recipe for escalation into a nuclear war.
Instead of the US, Russia and India aligned against China, now the Russians, Chinese and Indians -- along with the OPEC nations and nearly all of the global South - are united against the foolish, self-destructive US sanctions.

^ What are you talking about? Sanctions hurt people everywhere around the world, including the American public. The only people benefiting from sanctions are private traders and corrupt American politicians such as the president and his family.
The biggest losers from the sanctions are two groups: the half a billion desperately poor people in Asia, the Middke East and Africa who depend on Russian wheat and other exports for survival, and millions of Americans who are now becoming poor. Of course the sanctions must be lifted as part of any settlement. They are a foolish and counterproductive, blunt instrument that never should have been wielded in the first place.

Putin has entered your head. You are so obsessed with him that you cannot even see what is before your eyes. Again: sanctions are hurting the American public and will cause at least 10 million people to starve across the global South.
The world outside of America and Europe doesn't care about Putin or Zelensky. They care intensely about evading or breaking the foolish US sanctions. For scores of governments and billions of people, overcoming these sanctions is a matter of survival.

The tectonic plates of the Old World Order (Post WWII Cold War) are drift, as the American bulwark has become suicidal internally, and dead broke as it consumes itself with lunatic cultural BS, delusional, profligate spending, and compromised, inept leadership. New and emergent foreign power centers are casting about for a new web of alliances that offer benefit and security. Astride all this the Middle Kingdom seems ascendant (if vulnerable to food, energy and foreign markets) and focused on massive expansion.
In contrast, Washington seems run by cloaked Marxist fools, the gay lobby, minority/union stakeholders and the Obama minions for whom every decision must be corrosive to Traditional America.
India, Brazil, and other historic non-aligned nations and perhaps the sane Middle Eastern players are considering realignment even as Iran and Pakistan collude, and Putin is driving Russian into fealty with China and isolation in his maniacal determination to finish somehow a massive mistake (witness the Stalinesque decapitation of the FSB and now his Army leadership) in Ukraine.
At this moment of turmoil and global leadership opportunity the US is economically crippled, invaded, culturally conflicted and led by the most inept, corrupt, cowardly concentration of clueless politicians in our modern history. I cannot see the horizon but there is a damn big set of icebergs out there and Jojo has the bridge...

US will leave NATO. Its death has been artificially postponed, and we all know how that ends.
USA needs: Prompt Global Strike, more Block (latest) Virginias, Columbias (more than 12) GBSD, LRSO and a shock collar program for the DoS kids and their think tank enablers. Tightly controlled borders (not just south) and repurpose USAID into an agency charged with paying down the US National Debt.
Thus endeth the Rantlet.

I’ve been arguing that China is about to crash into demographic and financial walls. Lawrence Person at Battleswarm Blog makes the argument better and with more data. Some of his many points:
They were going shrink in half by 2100. “Then they realized that they had been overcounting people for some time.” Then new data moved the date moved up to 2070. And now they’re saying it will be 2050. “For that to be true, the Chinese would have overcounted the population by 100 million.” And all of those missing people are of childbearing age.
Their population actually peaked 15 years ago.
“China isn’t getting rich, it’s getting old.” They’re facing demographic collapse within a decade.
“All of the economic growth we have seen in China since 2006 is because of debt.”
Corporate debt is 350% of GDP, “making China the most indebted country in human history in both absolute and relative terms.” Every country that’s come within half of this has collapsed under the debt load.
Russia is the world’s second largest oil exporter, and it can’t export more to China because the pipes that go east don’t interconnect with the ones that go west. “The rail lines are already beyond capacity.”
To get more oil to China: “You would have to build a fundamentally new infrastructure from the fields in northwest Siberia to Chinese population centers that is greater than the distance from Miami to Anchorage, most of which is through virgin territory that is very rugged. That’s a 10-year program minimum even with the Chinese building it.”

[Dawn] A Pakistain Army soldier was martyred on Wednesday in an exchange of fire between troops and murderous Moslems in North Wazoo's Isham area, according to a statement issued by the military's media wing.
The statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) identified the soldier as Sepoy Asmatullah Khan, 28, who was a resident of Mianwali. The statement said he fought "gallantly".
"Sanitisation of the area is being carried out to eliminate any murderous Moslems found in the area. Pakistain Army is determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve," the ISPR statement said.
On Tuesday, an army major and a soldier were martyred and two bad boyz were potted during an exchange of fire between members of security forces and a group of murderous Moslems in the Birmal area of South Waziristan tribal district.
[Dawn] Eight soldiers were martyred in two terrorist attacks in North Wazoo on Thursday, security sources said.
In one incident, seven soldiers were martyred when murderous Moslems ambushed a vehicle of security forces in Datakhel tehsil of North Waziristan tribal district. In the second incident, which took place in Isham area of the district, a solider was martyred in a clash between security forces and terrorists.
As for the first attack, officials said the murderous Moslems attacked a moving vehicle of the security forces in Datakhel near the Afghan border. Sources said the snuffies used a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and assault guns in the attack.
Seven soldiers embraced martyrdom in the attack, officials told the media in Miranshah ... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas... , the district headquarters of North Waziristan.
The martyred soldiers have been identified as Havaldar Tariq, Sepoy Arshad, Sepoy Kashif, Sepoy Junaid, Sepoy Ijaz Ali, Sepoy Waqas and Sepoy Jawad Mir. Their bodies were shifted in a military helicopter to Miranshah.
Sources said that a search operation in the area was in progress. According to reports, security personnel also retaliated but casualties on the holy warrior side could not be ascertained.
The ISPR has yet to confirm the attack or issue a formal statement.
This major attack comes at the heels of a deadly attack in the southern district of Dera Ismail Khan ... the Pearl of Pashtunistan ... three days ago which left five coppers dead and four maimed.
Unlike other areas of North Waziristan, Datakhel is considered a relatively safe sanctuary for terrorist groups. Security forces have yet to clear the area and hundreds of displaced families are still waiting to return to their homes.
In the second attack, a fire exchange took place between troops and murderous Moslems in the Isham area of North Waziristan district, in which 28-year-old Sepoy Asmatullah Khan of Mianwali embraced martyrdom, military media wing ISPR said.
Sanitisation of the area is being carried out to eliminate any murderous Moslems found in the area.
Pakistain Army is determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve, said the security sources.
The incidents on Thursday have raised the tally of terrorist attacks on security forces to three this week in the Waziristan region of erstwhile Fata.
On Monday, a check-post of security forces came under attack in the South Waziristan district, in which an army major and a soldier were martyred while two personnel were maimed. Two murderous Moslems were also killed during the exchange of fire with the security forces in that attack.
The DG ISPR told a presser on Thursday that 97 officers and soldiers had embraced martyrdom in the first three months of this year. With eight more embracing martyred on Thursday, the tally goes up to 105.
He said 128 turbans had been killed in the corresponding period, while 270 had been arrested.
[Rudaw] All groups, whether local or international, who fund the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (ISIS) and its activities will be held responsible and punished accordingly, the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) coordinator for international advocacy told Rudaw's Sangar Abdulrahman on Wednesday.
A delegation from the Kurdistan Region in Berlin revealed the prevalence of entities that financially support the terror group, despite it having been devoid of all territorial control for around three years. In the meeting, light was also shed on the existence of groups in Erbil that fund the organization.
"We have arrested some groups in Erbil and the Kurdistan Region in the past who transferred funds to ISIS-controlled areas and funded ISIS through offices based in the Region," said Dindar Zebari.
"The UN [United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit... ] Security Council has decided to punish those who supported ISIS financially," he said, adding that a UN team in Iraq has launched investigations on the case to be handed over to international courts.
According to Zebari, citing a UN report, ISIS receives up to $100 million annually from external funding.
The US-led coalition stated that ISIS "continued to raise funds via various means, including oil smuggling ... kidnapping for ransom, extortion, looting, and the possible operation of front companies," in their 2021 report.
The aforementioned report noted The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire... as a significant intermediary in ISIS's transfer of money between Iraq and Syria, saying that the group uses its trusted partners in Turkey as agents.
Private banks have also delivered funds to ISIS, Zebari noted.
Zebari stressed the issue of vast amounts of money being transferred from Gulf countries "in the name of charity, and the money has reached ISIS-controlled areas."
As the terror group's grasp on the region continues to decline, it resorts to other means to generate funds, including drug smuggling and kidnapping to collect ransom money.
ISIS seized control of swathes of land in Iraq in 2014. The group was declared territorially defeated in 2017 but it continues to carry out bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions across the country's provinces.
In January, Iraqi security forces arrested four civilians who were financing ISIS by means of collecting royalties.

[IsraelTimes] Officers enter flashpoint holy site after morning prayers as Moslem worshipers throw stones at Western Wall; 59 reported injured
Clashes broke out between Paleostinians and Israeli police at the Temple Mount early Friday morning, as spiking tensions, threats of terror and the observance of major holidays all converge around the flashpoint holy site. Skirmishes between police and worshipers at the site were reported around 6:30 a.m., with officers entering the compound and clashing with people barricaded inside.
Police said in a statement that at around 4 a.m., dozens of young people began marching in the area, carrying flags of both the Paleostinian Liberation Organization and the Gazoo

[USAWatchDog] Legendary financial and geopolitical cycle analyst Martin Armstrong thinks the New World Order’s so-called "Great Reset" plan for humanity now needs war to try and make it work. It could happen in the next few weeks. Armstrong explains, "What they are trying to do is deliberately poke the bear. . . . They are increasing the pressure on just about everything under the sun. The West needs World War III. They just need it. The real problem here is they went to negative interest rates in 2014 in Europe. They have been unable to stimulate the economy, and Keynesian economics have completely failed. . . . I would say this is mismanagement of government on a global scale. The problem is that central banks have no control over the economy. Add to this, this type of inflation is substantially different than a speculative boom.
This inflation is based upon shortages. These morons with covid . . . with lockdowns, ended up destroying the supply chains. . . . Things that are there, I buy extra of because next time it might be gone. So, everybody is increasing their hoarding. . . . So, what we have with Europe, with its negative interest rates, they have wiped out all the pension funds. They need 8% to break even, not negative rates. There is not a pension fund in Europe that is solvent at this stage of the game. . . . The European government is collapsing. If they end up defaulting, you are going to have millions of people down there with pitch forks storming the parliament. So, to avoid that, they need war. . . . The Biden Administration has deliberately destroyed the world economy."
[PJ] Those wacky, right-wing, tinfoil-hat people (like myself) are correct yet again.
After defense attorneys "combed through a mountain of discovery," they added a footnote to their 41-page motion to dismiss charges related to Jan. 6.
Attorneys added a note that "At least 20 FBI and ATF assets were embedded around the Capitol on J6," to page 6 of the motion, which they filed to dismiss charges of seditious conspiracy and obstruction charges against 10 members of the "Oath Keepers," a right-leaning, pro-Constitution group of Americans.
The "mountain of discovery" included FD-302 forms, which FBI agents fill out after they interview people.
The motion to dismiss, filed by defense attorney David W. Fischer, also stated that defense attorneys had "not found one iota of proof" that the ten Oath Keepers "had any plan, intention, design, or scheme to specifically enter the Capitol Building on J6."
Many Americans, especially J6 defendants and their lawyers, have long maintained that undercover feds were involved in the Jan. 6 protest-turned-melee.
FACT-O-RAMA! If 300,000 Americans descend upon Washington D.C. and only 200 get violent, that would be the true meaning of "mostly peaceful."
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) ripped Jill Sanborn, executive assistant director of the FBI’s national security division, about this very topic on Jan. 11, 2022, in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
"How many FBI agents or confidential informants actively participated in the events of Jan. 6," Cruz asked Sanborn.
"Sir, I’m sure you can appreciate that I can’t go into the specifics of sources and methods," Sanborn answered.
"Did any FBI agents or confidential informants actively participate in the events of Jan. 6, yes or no" Cruz continued.
"Sir, I can’t answer that," Sanborn responded.
"Did any FBI agents or confidential informants commit crimes of violence on Jan. 6?" Cruz asked.

/\ Yes, a bit more than the 20 game drivers and bush beaters. Those dressed in mufti, wearing red MAGA caps out in the crowd.
The total element likely included a nearby Command & Control cell, communications and logistics package, Full Motion Video back to Main. In addition, a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) ....appearing by the way, out of nowhere (see graphic), all kitted out in camo, kevlar, M4's, and med support element, escorting pols and staffers to designated safe areas and manning blocking positions for the Capital Police.
There appeared to be pre-designated channeling routes with "no-go" corridors and egress points. The young lady that was fatally shot may have attempted access to a "no-go" area.
This was something a bit more than a "hey Lenny, take a few guys and go see what those foks are up to." They had a plan. They obviously worked the plan.

[Breitbart] Atlanta rapper Archie Eversole has died from wounds suffered when his brother, Alexander Kraus, shot him late last month.
Dekalb County, Georgia, police confirmed this week that Eversole was shot on March 25 on Golf Vista Circle, according to the New York Post.
He died of his wounds in a hospital on April 3.
Officers say that Eversole was found shot at a Chevron station and later determined that Kraus was involved in the incident. Kraus was arrested and charged with the shooting.
Kraus was arrested before the rapper died of his wounds and his charged were upgraded to murder when Eversole died.
The German-born "We Ready" rapper was well known among athletes and several paid tribute to him upon his passing.

“Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it.” ― Laurence J. Peter, The Peter Principle
Just for a second, say the 25th is used and Biden is ushered out.
VP Harris becomes President and the Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi) become VP.
This is an example of the Peter Principle in Politics.
Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.*
*note that when the VP becomes the Prez, there is no VP to cast a tie vote breaker.

[An Nahar] Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi warned neighboring Iraq on Thursday not to allow its soil to be used for activities that disrupt the Islamic republic's security, his office said. His comments follow accusations by Iran ...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence... last month that Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region had hosted a "strategic center" used by Tehran's arch enemy Israel.
"The president emphasized that Iran strongly expects neighboring countries, especially Iraq, not to allow any presence that is disruptive to the security of the Islamic republic," a statement by Raisi's office said.
The president accused Iraq's Kurdistan region of "negligence", adding that Iran is closely monitoring the movements of Israel and will not allow it to endanger the security of the region through any country, including Iraq.
The Iranian president made the remarks in Tehran during a meeting with visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.
Iraq's top diplomat pledged that his country will not be a base for actions against Iran's security, the statement added.
"We are ready for extensive cooperation, including in the field of security, to prevent any threat to the interests of Iran," Fuad said, according to Raisi's office.
Last month, Iran targeted the northern Iraqi city of Arbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region, with a dozen ballistic missiles that lightly maimed two civilians.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards, the ideological arm of the country's military, confirmed at the time that they fired the projectiles and targeted a "strategic center" used by Israel.
Arbil governor Oumid Khouchnaw dismissed as "baseless" any notion of Israeli sites in and around Arbil, saying "there are no Israeli sites in the region."

Institute for the study of wars reports:
"Russian forces will likely continue ongoing offensive operations in the Donbas region, feeding reinforcements into the fight as they become available rather than gathering reinforcements and replacements for a more coordinated and coherent offensive."
In other words the Great Donbas Offensive may not come, largely because the Russians can't manage it.

[NYPOST] Former Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano was sentenced to 12 years behind bars Thursday for accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from a Queens restaurateur.
His wife Linda — who was convicted of helping to cover up the corrupt arrangement — was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment.
Judge Joan Azrack, who handed down the prison terms to the Bethpage couple in two separate hearings in Central Islip federal court, also ordered Mangano, 60, to pay a $20,000 fine.
Mangano was convicted in 2019 of accepting bribes and kickbacks from the restaurateur, Harendra Singh, including five paid vacations, a pricey watch, hardwood flooring for his home, a $3,600 vibrating chair and a $100,000 per year no-show job for Linda, 59.
In exchange, the once-powerful politician — who served in his position from 2010 to 2017 — pressured local officials to guarantee $20 million in loans for Singh.
The scheme lasted for five years beginning in 2010 and continuing through 2015, prosecutors said at trial.

[NYPOST] Prince Harry ...That guy who married Meghan Markle. You know. The ones that didn't get invited to Michelle Obama's party?... and Princess Meghan Markle ...unlikable American former starlet married to the formerly likable Prince Harry. Chock full of lefty political opinions and not many brains, Markle's most important characteristic is that she is Black, even though she doesn't look it. Her mother, y'see, is half black and her father is white, which would make her a quarter Black. Once married, she was too classy for the Royals and she and Harry decamped to Beverly Hills, kind of like the Clampetts did, because she was so much classier than the Winsdors.... dropped in to visit the Queen in a secret rendezvous But don't tell nobody. It was a secret.
at Windsor Castle on their way to a sporting event for maimed veterans, reports said.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also met with Prince Charles while stopping in the UK on their way to The Hague for the Invictus Games, according to the BBC.
The visit by Harry and Meghan comes two years after their high-profile split from the Royal Family and move to the Hollywood Hills and pursue entertainment ventures.

[An Nahar] Hizbullah ...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory... deputy chief Sheikh Naim Qassem ... the Grand Vizier of the Hezbullies... has announced that his party wants a "national unity" government to be formed after the upcoming parliamentary elections.
"Our project is partnership with everyone and a national unity government," Qassem said in an interview with Hizbullah’s al-Nour radio station.
"We don’t have any plan to change the (political) system and we don’t propose any modifications. As for those who have changes that they consider to be appropriate, there are legal mechanisms for that," Hizbullah’s number two added.
Commenting on the latest return of the Saudi and Gulf ambassadors to Lebanon Hezbollahstan ...Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. ... , Qassem said the envoys who returned "realized that their absence would not put pressure on Hizbullah but would rather deprive them of the possibility of" making use of their presence in the country.

[DAILYCALLER] The Republican National Committee (RNC) unanimously voted Thursday to withdraw from the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) and is pledging to find another venue to hold debates.
CPD has hosted general presidential election debates since 1988 and was originally a joint venture of the Republican and Democratic Parties. However, it's easy to be generous with someone else's money... in recent years, Republican candidates and their allies have complained that the commission is biased towards Democrats. They have cited the campaign donations and personal ties of members of the commission, as well as the treatment of GOP nominees.
"Debates are an important part of the democratic process, and the RNC is committed to free and fair debates. The Commission on Presidential Debates is biased and has refused to enact simple and common sense reforms to help ensure fair debates including hosting debates before voting begins and selecting moderators who have never worked for candidates on the debate stage," RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement.

Agree to a long discussion format with Joe Rogan as moderator. Each side can film it and edit how they like. Raw footage can then be released later to ensure some honesty in the editing.

I haven't bothered to watch any debates since Kennedy vs Nixon in 1960. The TV is good for fire and smoke, and worthless for substance. Let the candidates post writings, commented on by the other candidates, to which replies are made by other candidates. No other contributors allowed. Might make for interesting reading this way.

I seem to have awoken in an alternate time-line where the Republicans have a spine.
Hey, what if we have a more traditional style of debate? Let the candidates contend one-on-one in single combat. People would pay to watch that!

The debate between Trump and Biden was good for one thing. That was when Biden straight up lied about Hunter's laptop being Russian disinformation. That kind of indisputable proof that he is a liar might be useful at some point in the future.

[THEEPOCHTIMES] Elon Musk’s ambitious bid to take Twitter private under his ownership has hit a roadblock as Saudi investors are rejecting the Tesla CEO’s offer, causing Twitter shares to drop and setting the stage for a bitter struggle for control of the social media giant.
On Thursday, several hours after Musk announced his "final offer" to buy Twitter outright, the Saudi Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Fifteen of the nineteen WTC hijackers were Saudis, and most major jihadi commanders were Saudis, to include Osama bin Laden. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman quietly folded that tent in 2016, doing terrible things to the guys running it, and has since been dragging the kingdom into the current century... n Prince Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud responded that the offer was not acceptable to him. Al Waleed purchased a 5.2 percent stake in the company in 2015, and if it is assumed that he has retained these shares, he would count among Twitter’s largest shareholders (it has been reported that Al Waleed sold many of his shares in the subsequent years).
"I don’t believe that the proposed offer by @elonmusk ($54.20) comes close to the intrinsic value of @Twitter given its growth prospects," said Al Waleed in a tweet. "Being one of the largest & long-term shareholders of Twitter @Kingdom_KHC & I reject this offer."
Musk retorted on Twitter, implicitly criticizing the Saudi Arabian government and alleging that Waleed’s rejection was political in nature.
"Interesting. Just two questions, if I may," said Musk in response. "How much of Twitter does the Kingdom own, directly & indirectly? What are the Kingdom’s views on journalistic freedom of speech?"

[An Nahar] Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh ...Governor of Lebanon'scentral bank, Banque du Liban since April 1993. Salameh was appointed Governor by decree, approved by the Council of Ministers for a renewable term of six years. He was reappointed for four consecutive terms; in 1999, 2005, 2011 and 2017. Salameh chairs the Banque du Liban Central Council, the Higher Banking Commission, the AML/CFT Special Investigation Commission and the Capital Markets Authority. Salameh is a member of the board of governors at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and at the Arab Monetary Fund (AMF). Salameh is the longest-serving central bank governor in the world.... has said that he is willing to meet with Swiss prosecutors over a money-laundering investigation.
"I have already informed the Swiss justice that I am ready to go," he told Swiss television SRF.
"Because they asked the question in February 2020 whether they can (interview) me in Lebanon Hezbollahstan ...The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers, a practice dating back to the heady days of human sacrifice to Baal Moloch... or in Switzerland ...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell... . I said I am ready to go to Switzerland... I am waiting for them to call for me," Salameh added.
Asked about properties he owns in Switzerland, Salameh said he used investment advisers and bank loans to buy property, adding: "I don't see where is the crime in that."
Lebanon opened a local probe into Salameh's wealth last year, after the Swiss top prosecutor's office requested assistance in an investigation into more than $300 million which he allegedly embezzled out of the central bank with the help of his brother.
Salameh also faces lawsuits in other European countries, including La Belle France and Britannia.
Lebanon's top banker of three decades is blamed for policies that contributed to the country's financial collapse, a charge he has repeatedly denied.

[An Nahar] Cabinet on Thursday agreed to demolish the blast-hit silos at Beirut’s port, which according to a technical report are facing the threat of collapse, as it approved the use of funds from the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights for importing wheat and incurable disease medicines.
"The banking secrecy law will be re-discussed at the next Cabinet session," Information Minister Ziad Makari said after the meeting.
"The Council for Reconstruction and Development has been tasked with overseeing the demolition of wheat silos at Beirut’s port," Makari added.
Al-Jadeed TV meanwhile reported that Cabinet agreed that Special Drawing Rights funds can only be used for urgent matters and that any such move would require a Cabinet decision
Makari said the government's decision to demolish the silos was based on a report by Lebanon Hezbollahstan ...The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers, a practice dating back to the heady days of human sacrifice to Baal Moloch... 's Khatib and Alami Engineering Company, which warned that the silos could collapse within months.
"Repairing them will cost a lot," Makari said.
Last year, Swiss company Amann Engineering also called for their demolition, saying the most damaged of the silos were tilting at a rate of two millimeters per day.
Once boasting a capacity of more than 100,000 tons, the imposing 48-meter-high structure has become emblematic of the catastrophic August 4 port blast, that killed around 231 people, injured 7,000 and damaged swathes of the capital in 2020.
The silos absorbed much of the blast's impact, shielding large swaths of west Beirut from its ravaging effects.
Activists and some relatives of blast victims have called for the grain silos to be preserved as a memorial site.
"The silos are a witness to the massacre you committed against us," said a statement last month by the victims' families, referring to authorities.
"They will not be demolished, no matter how hard you try."
To assuage potential anger over the decision, the Cabinet on Thursday tasked the interior and culture ministries with erecting a monument commemorating the victims of the earth-shattering kaboom.

[WLBT] LAUREL, Miss. An umpire is recovering Monday after she was punched in the face following a softball game.
Moments after that confrontation, a Laurel mother was arrested and charged with simple assault.
Saturday night. Kristie Moore says she was filling in, calling a 12-year-old softball game after one of her umpires got sick. She’s been calling games for 10 years.
One of the moms was allegedly cursing so badly during the game that she was asked her to leave.
Eventually the coach made the mom leave, but instead of going home, Kiara Thomas allegedly waited for Moore after the game. That’s when, Moore says, Thomas confronted her, punched her, and then fled.
She was quickly arrested.
Moore says parents are out of control and are making it harder and harder for umpires to do their jobs.
"It’s ridiculous," she said. "The verbal abuse. And even now, the physical abuse now, at this point, and enough is enough. I also staff every USFA tournament in the state of Mississippi with umpires and it gets harder and harder to staff these tournaments because no one wants to listen to the verbal abuse and run the risk of what happened to me happening to them."
Keep in mind, these umpires get paid at most $40 a game. They do the job mostly because they love the game and the kids, not for the money.
Kiara Thomas is scheduled to be in court Wednesday. Her charge is a misdemeanor and she will be banned from all recreational facilities in Laurel.
This year, a bill was introduced in the legislature that would make assaulting a referee or umpire a felony. It would be aggravated assault. That bill died on the calendar.

Many hunters would put the deer out of its “misery” and let it lie. If a hunter did harvest it I seriously doubt it would be eaten upon closer inspection. A commercial deer butcher wouldn’t want it in his shop.
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Frank James, 62, was taken into custody on Wednesday, nearly 30 hours after the shooting in Brooklyn
He has now been charged with federal terrorism charges and is due to be arraigned
His criminal record includes multiple charges in New York and New Jersey including charges for possessing burglary tools, criminal sex act, criminal tampering, trespassing, larceny and disorderly conduct
James was arrested outside a McDonald's on First Avenue in the East Village after security worker Zach Tahhan, 21, recognized him and alerted nearby cops
The New York Post also cites sources saying James called cops himself saying: 'I think you're looking for me'
Eric Adams claimed on Wednesday 'we got him!' and Commissioner Keechant Sewell claimed the NYPD left him 'nowhere to hide' and 'shrank his world'
They were slammed by New Yorkers who pointed out how James had been able to evade the entire city's law enforcement and FBI for nearly 30 hours
Breon S. Peace, the U.S. attorney for New York's Eastern District, which brought the charges, said James could face life in prison if convicted: he is due in federal court on Thursday

A few things the media is avoiding or lightly mentioning.
* Frank R. James, A Black Nationalist.
* Posted a meme “O black Jesus, please kill all the whiteys.”
* Had BLM materials in his residence.
* Repeatedly posted on social media Racist based black identity extremist ideologies materials, including the Nation of Islam, Black Panthers, Black Liberation Army, BLM and supported the actions of black nationalist cop-killer Micah Johnson.
* It seems, despite massive censorship of Conservative social media postings and videos, he had "Black" immunity and had a YouTube channel under “prophetoftruth88” also.
* James, help promote CNN, as many of his videos had CNN tuned in the background while making his Racist Rant videos.
Quoting The NY Post "...the FBI refuted reports that James was on any watch list, saying agents had not previously investigated him. Maybe if the FBI didn’t waste so much effort chasing down white-supremacy hoaxes, entrapping Trump supporters and investigating bogus reports of nooses in NASCAR garages, it might have been better placed to notice James’ years of hate-filled rants on social media."
.the criminal organization known by its acronym FBI refuted reports that James was on any watch list, saying agents had not previously investigated him.

The very obvious suppression, misdirection and concealment of identifying information that might have assisted the general public in giving assistance to law enforcement was so obvious from the very beginning of this story. Anyone else remember the Twitter post someone put up here the day of the shootings that included a photo and name of the suspect, which without a few minutes had its photo deleted from Twitter?

[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] At least two Paleostinians were killed and six others were maimed during fierce festivities that broke out between the Paleostinians and the Zionist occupation forces on Thursday in Jenin, bringing the number of deaders to five in 24 hours.
The forces of occupation attacked the two districts al-Yamoun and Kafardan in Jenin this morning and clashed with Paleostinian youths in the area, killing two Paleostinians and injuring six others, local sources said.
Local sources reported that the Zionist forces also detained several Paleostinian citizens in Jenin.
Meanwhile, ...back at the comedy club, Boogie was cracking himself up, but nobody else seemed to be getting the non-stop jokes... Paleostinian Resistance® in Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response... sent a message to Israel through mediators a few days ago, declaring that any attack on the Jenin camp in the West Bank is considered a red line and the Resistance® would enter the front line in case any attack is launched in there.

The Department of Foreign Relations of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) handed over, on Thursday, 10 ISIS children of Russian nationality to an official delegation of Russia.
The Russian delegation was headed by Elena Alexandrov, assistant to the office of Maria Lvova Belova, the office of the Children’s Rights Commissioner for the President of the Russian Federation.
The Russian delegation was received by the front man of the AANES Department of Foreign Relations, Kamal Akef.
During a presser held in the Department of Foreign Relations, Akaf said, "today we hand over 10 Russian children of ISIS members’ families to their country."
The new batch brings total toll of the repatriated Russian children to 254, according to Akef.
Akef stressed the AANES’ continuity in cooperation with Russia and all other countries which have national children of ISIS families in northeast Syria.
For its part, the Russian delegation expressed gratefulness to AANES for the cooperation in the children repatriation process.
In regard to the repatriation of the Russian children in a collective way, Alexandrov said "this issue is difficult and needs measures. Therefore, Russia will repatriate their citizens on batches."
The number of Russian children in Roj camp alone is about 100, according to the camp management.
There are more than 7,000 foreign children of ISIS orphans, with more than 50 nationalities, in addition to approximately 18,000 Iraqi children in the camps of northeastern Syria.
In July 2021, the AANES handed over 20 ISIS children to Russia, and in April 2021, it repatriated 34.

If anyone noticed, not one article about the Moskva being hit by antiship missiles was from neither the Russian Ministry of Defense, nor the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, nor the Ukrainian general staff.
All the sources for the missile strike stories have come from unnamed Ukrainian politicians, or from sources outside the Ukrainian military.
In the Ukrainian roundup article originally posted by korrespondent.net, the Moskva is mentioned 13 times, and in none of those mentons are sourced from the Ukrainian military.

Either way badanov, the Russians have to go with either they can't defend their own flagship from a country that has almost no navy, or they lost their own flagship due to incompetence.
Neither are a good look for projecting military power and strength.
#7
they can't defend their own flagship from a country that has almost no navy
BLUF: You do not need a navy to kill a ship
The "almost no navy" meme is quickly becoming popular despite being nonsense. There is an old naval axiom, "A ship's a fool that fights a fort" referring to the advantages that accrue to the land-based side in a battle.
Nowadays, serious ship-killing is done with missiles instead of guns. In addition to being launched from warships, missiles can launched from planes, from land by fixed installations or mobile launchers, or even by hand. There are reports of ships hit by infantry anti-tank missiles. No navy required. "Missiles - they blow stuff up good!"
#13
Drone swarms are so easy to launch. A squad of infantrymen would be very hard pressed to quickly distinguish a swarm of dirt cheap drones bought at a DIY store from drones that could kill all of them. I wonder if this ploy won't become popular in war zones.

IIRC some backwater Houthis hit a number of *cough* Saudi ships.
Silkworms in the Suez?
Syracuse held off Rome "without almost no Navy", and what was they had, was latched and reefed to prevent port entry.
How many ships did the Allies lose trying to force the Dardanelles in WWI? That's, WW1 for you Tiktokrs.
Rhodes? Constantinople? Baltimore? History is nearly completely on the side of adequate coastal defense vs. Navy.
As the weapons systems have become more portable, more accurate, and more range, coastal operations become dicier and dicier; if and how much is true, what raises my eyebrows would be the defeat of detection and CIWS systems defenses.

The problem with the "it wuz an accident" scenario is that the first item I saw this week re: the Moskva was Wednesday afternoon, with a report that the Ukranians had severly damaged it with a missile, with all the "we had an ammo fire accident" reports coming afterwards.

Badanov, why did the Ukranian hoaxers know to put out that the Ukranians launched a missile strike coincidentally the morning of the day it turns out later that the mine or the fire-they-set-to-kill-the-spider got out of hand and away from their damage control and sunk the ship? Isn't that kind of a big coincidence?
They haven't been claiming they sunk the Moskva every day for the past three weeks and finally got it right by coincidence.
[An Nahar] Russian officials on Thursday accused Ukraine of sending helicopters to bomb a town in the southern Bryansk region about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the border, after reporting seven injured in shelling.
"Using two military helicopters carrying heavy weaponry, Ukrainian armed forces illegally entered Russian air space," Russia's Investigative Committee -- which probes major crimes -- said in a statement.
"Flying low, acting deliberately, they carried out at least six air strikes on residential buildings in the settlement of Klimovo," Sherlocks said.
As a result, they said, "at least six residential buildings were damaged... and seven people received injuries of varying severity including one small child born in 2020."
This appeared to be the first time that Moscow has officially accused Ukrainian armed forces of flying helicopters into Russia to carry out an attack.
Previously the governor of Belgorod region in southern Russia, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said two Ukrainian military helicopters had carried out a strike on a fuel depot on April 1, while this was not directly confirmed by Ukraine or Moscow.
Thursday's shelling was announced earlier by governor Alexander Bogomaz, who said on Telegram that "two residential buildings were damaged and some of the residents were maimed".
A Russian health ministry official, Alexei Kuznetsov, told the RIA Novosti news agency that the seven injured were in hospital, adding that two were at death's door and required surgery.
The governor of Russia's Belgorod region, Gladkov, later said on Telegram that the village of Spodaryushino close to the border "came under shelling from the Ukrainian side" and residents from this and a nearby village had been evacuated as a precaution.
Also on Thursday, Russia's security agency the FSB told TASS news agency that Ukraine fired at border checkpoint where over 30 Ukrainian refugees were crossing into Russia.

[GREATERKASHMIR] Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar alias 'Mushtaq Latram' has been designated as a "terrorist" under the stringent anti-terror law UAPA, a move which enables the security agencies to attach his or associates' properties believed to be purchased from proceeds of crime.
With this, anyone staying in touch with him becomes an offender under the law, reported news agency PTI.
Zargar was one of the Death Eaters released in exchange for passengers of hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC-814 in 1999 besides Maulana Masood Azhar ...One of the major players in Pak terrorism. In early 1994, India incarcerated him for his activities. In 1995, foreign tourists were kidnapped in Jammu and Kashmir. The kidnappers included his release among their demands. One of the hostages managed to escape but the rest were eventually killed. In 1999, he was freed by the Indian government in exchange for passengers on hijacked Indian Airlines Flight 814 that had been diverted to Kandahar. The hijackers were led by Masood Azhar's brother, Ibrahim Athar. Once he was handed over to the hijackers, they fled to Pak territory despite the fact that Islamabad had earlier stated that any of the hijackers would be jugged at the border. The Pak government had also previously indicated that Azhar would be allowed to return home since he did not face any charges there. Shortly after his release, he made a public address to an estimated 10,000 people in Karachi, firing up the rubes against America and India... , the chief of banned group Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Sheikh Omar, who killed American journalist Daniel Pearl who was working for The Wall Street Journal.
Zargar is the fourth individual to have been designated as a terrorist by the Centre in the last one week and the 35th individual to have been declared a designated terrorist by the government.
In a notification, the Union Home Ministry said, Zargar alias Latram, 52, belongs to Nowhatta in Srinagar and is the "founder and chief commander of terror group al-Umar-Mujahideen and had been affiliated with the Jammu-Kashmir ...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there.... Liberation Front."
Zargar is currently based in Pakistain where he had gone in the late 1980s to receive arms training.
The home ministry said Zargar has been running an incessant campaign from Pakistain to fuel terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
He has been involved in various terror crimes, including murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, planning and execution of terrorist attacks and terror funding, it noted.

^^^^^Ref the above, is this connected to the Turks suddenly re-stating a limit on Russian Naval access? It looks like the depth might be 1000 to 1500 meters from a quick map recon, but the middle quickly drops off to 2500 meters. Someone in Istanbul might be very interested in poking around the wreck.

In the small print:
The ports in the Black sea are in a war zone. The other ports are shallow water ports where tankers can't go.
So you have to hire a bunch of small ships to pick up the oil and take it out to sea and do a sea transfer, which is expensive and dangerous. Then sail the supertankers around Europe, through the Mediterranean, through the Indian ocean to where ever you want it.
[JPost] The strike on Thursday night was the second alleged Israeli airstrike to hit Syria in the past week.
An alleged Israeli airstrike targeted sites near Damascus on Thursday night, in the second Israeli strike in Syria in a week, according to Syrian reports.
Syrian air defenses responded to the strike, with only material damage being caused by the strike, according to Syrian state news agency SANA. The strike was carried out from over the Golan Heights.
The strike targeted sites near the towns of Rakhlah and Qatana, southwest of Damascus, according to the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen TV. The Scientific Studies and Research Center in Jamraya was also targeted, according to the Step News Agency.
The Scientific Studies and Research Center in Jamraya was last targeted by an alleged Israeli airstrike in February, according to the Syrian Capital Voice news site. A Syrian soldier and five civilians were killed in that strike.
The strike on Thursday night was the second alleged Israeli airstrike to hit Syria in the past week.
Israel has fired several missiles toward Syrian military positions near Damascus, causing material damage, Syria’s military said Friday.
State media quoted an unnamed military official as saying that the attack occurred shortly before midnight Thursday, adding that some of the Israeli missiles were shot down by Syrian air defenses.
The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said the missiles struck positions of Iran-backed fighters southwest of the capital, near the suburb of Qatana.
[NYPOST] The threat-laced ramblings of alleged subway shooter Frank James, now in jug, have a disturbingly familiar ring, don’t they? Sure, they’re on YouTube — but bitter mumblings of the same sort are heard all day, every day in New York’s increasingly untenable subway system.
So the question of the moment is this: How long will the city accommodate — indeed, encourage — aggressive mental illness in its public spaces? Will it ever push back?
How many shootings, how many slashings, how many fatal shovings and — disgustingly — how many demented excrement smearings will it take before the penny drops?
How many subway cars, train and bus terminals and public parks must fill to the brim with pitiful, helpless and obviously self-destructive people before New York’s leaders have had enough?
This is not a new problem, of course — not by any means.
Once upon a time, decades ago, there was a police captain who got it. He had very little patience with a then-novel notion that therapy must always trump coercion when the violent mostly peaceful mentally ill act out in public.
"If you knew so much about mental cases," he’d bark at social workers, "the police wouldn’t need to be called. The reason we’re here is because you failed."
Certainly the new policy was failing, badly. It assumed the insane were fit masters of their own destiny, regardless of circumstances and consequences — which was, well, nuts. But it had become the law.
Presently New York’s mental hospitals emptied, its public spaces grew forbidding — and decades of often lethal chaos ensued.
Kendra’s Law, a ’90s response to a fatal subway shoving, allowed judges limited authority to order involuntary confinement for the mentally ill — until then, cops and the courts were virtually powerless before the violent mostly peacefully insane.
That was the theory, anyway. In practice, as that old-timey police captain well knew, coercion — jail — was applied because "therapy" was non-existent and, anyway, a prescription for continued mayhem.
Then came the progressive "reforms" of 2019. Now hardly anyone goes to jail for anything — and the thoroughly predictable result has been a sharp rise in seemingly motiveless violent mostly peaceful crime.
Except they’re usually not motiveless at all — but rather driven by demons that defy reason, let alone compassionate understanding. They’re just invisible.
None of this makes any difference to the city’s growing league of random victims — babies in strollers, wide-eyed tourists, elderly straphangers and, Tuesday morning, Brooklyn commuters.
Who speaks for them? Who acts for them?
Nobody with the power to help them, that’s for sure.
Kendra’s Law is a well-intentioned half-measure that takes fully into account the interests of the state’s violent mostly peacefully insane — but only nominally those of other New Yorkers.
This presumption needs to be flipped on its head. Where interests collide, those of the innocent must prevail — and this, ironically enough, would include those too addled to protect themselves.
Why is this so complicated?
That old cop recognized failure when he saw it. After five decades, you’d think New York would, too.

To be fair fricking Reagan.
Under President Ronald Reagan, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act repeals Carter's community health legislation and establishes block grants for the states, ending the federal government's role in providing services to the mentally ill. Federal mental-health spending decreases by 30 percent.

^ sorry, can't seem to find the federal government's responsibility in that area anywhere in the Constitution. However, I do see the 10th as saying if you can't find it here, it belongs to the states.

[CNBC] The Department of Justice charged a high-ranking Russian legislator and two of his staffers with running a yearslong scheme to influence U.S. officials by peddling disinformation to advance the Kremlin’s interests, according to court documents made public Thursday.
The three Russians, who have previously been sanctioned by the U.S., worked to undermine America’s international alliances and policies and “promote Russia’s illicit actions designed to destroy the sovereignty of Ukraine,” alleged an indictment filed in federal court in Manhattan.
Their scheme included “staged events, paid propaganda, and the recruitment of at least one American citizen to do their bidding in unofficial capacities,” the indictment alleged.
Aleksandr Mikhaylovich Babakov, 59, Aleksandr Nikolayevich Vorobev, 52, and Mikhail Alekseyevich Plisyuk, 58, are charged with conspiring to act as Russian agents in the U.S. without notifying the attorney general and conspiring to commit visa fraud. Those counts each carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
The three men also are charged with one count each of conspiring to violate and evade U.S. sanctions in violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a crime with a 20-year maximum prison sentence.
“Today’s indictment demonstrates that Russia’s illegitimate actions against Ukraine extend beyond the battlefield, as political influencers under Russia’s control allegedly plotted to steer geopolitical change in Russia’s favor through surreptitious and illegal means in the United States and elsewhere in the West,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a press release from the Justice Department.
“Such malign foreign interference will be exposed, and we will pursue justice against its perpetrators,” Williams said.
The indictment, filed last week in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and unsealed Thursday afternoon, alleges the operation spanned from January 2012 through at least June 2017.
Babakov, a former Russian senator and currently the deputy chairman of the State Duma, has become a leader in the “For Truth” party, which backs Russian President Vladimir Putin, the DOJ said. Vorobev is Babakov’s longtime chief of staff and Plisyuk is a staffer for Babakov.
The three men used a Russian nonprofit called the Institute for International Integration Studies as a front for their global influence campaign, the indictment alleged.
Through that group, and with the help of the American they recruited to their cause, the defendants allegedly tried to contact and secure meetings with members of the U.S. Congress. They offered free travel to at least one member of Congress on Babakov’s behalf, with the American associate dangling an “all expenses paid” trip to meet with European politicians and receive “an award,” according to the Justice Department.
All of the Congress members solicited for meetings rebuffed those offers, according to the indictment.
The Treasury Department sanctioned Babakov, Vorobev and Plisyuk in June 2017. Their visa applications were denied in January 2018.

US sanctions and US policy are making everything a hundred times worse. They are dragging the nonwestern world into one of the West's civil wars - and ensuring that the war, and the world's pain, lasts as long and are as harsh as possible.
This policy is nothing short of sadistic.
Instead of ending the war and ensuring the flow of wheat, fertilizer, gas and oil to the 60% of the world that depends upon Russian exports to feed itself, the US is determined to prolong the war for years or even decades.
#2
So Putin is willing to allow Ukrainian wheat to be exported through the Black Sea, and only the US is stopping him?

Why are you obsessed with Putin? It's your own country's senile and corrupt leader who is causing millions of innocents around the world to starve.
Americans do not have any idea of the havoc and ruin that their stupid sanctions cause. US sanctions do nothing to change the leaders' behavior or calculations and only end up causing the general public to hate America.
Indians have not forgotten the brutal and punitive US sanctions that the Clinton Administration imposed on us - for the crime of wanting to develop our own independent foreign policy with our own nukes.
Now America is doing it again, ensuring that another generation of Indians will bitterly resent America and that India will remain neutral whenever the US comes begging for support in its crusade against Russia.
#4
Again, you didn't answer my simple and direct question. As a humanitarian gesture to the third world why not let Ukraine export wheat through the Black Sea? Is Putin Russia willing to allow that?

The global South doesn't need your "humanitarian gestures." The nations of the South are willing and able to pay for Russian wheat. If the senile American elephant would just get out of our way and stop hammering us with its foolish sanctions and ruinous trade policies, we could easily feed our people.
#8
To clarify - for the non-trolls - "the senile American elephant" comment refers to stupid US policymakers. We are eternally grateful to Norman Borlaug, the brilliant American agronomist whose breakthroughs enabled us to more than double our food production in the 1960s. We wish there were more Americans like Borlaug and fewer like Biden and Clinton.
#9
I could care less others think is in 'our' interests.
You mean you couldn't care less? This helps explain why US policy makers keep getting away with policies that are so obviously against US interests. When other nations tell you that invading Iraq or meddling all over the world will only lead to trillions of your money wasted and hundreds of thousands of people killed - including 10,000 or more US boys - you don't listen to them.
The same goes for your stupid, reflexive sanctions policy. Your sanctions will blow back and crush your economy. Your own economists are now predicting that the dollar will probably lose its reserve currency status over the next decade or so. When it does you will lose your economic warfare stick with which you threaten other nations.
If you were trying to shrink your influence in the world, you could not do a better job than with these self-destructive policies.

My concern is for India. I just find it astonishing how willing Americans are to support Biden's policies. He's clearly destroying American wealth and influence in the world. Why do Americans support this?

Biden is destroying everyone's wealth (except his family's). That blithering idiot created hyperinflation and now he's going to cause a global recession.
I agree with the American congressman who said there should be regime change in Washington.
#17
However, for the record, Biden's ratings are down to something like 35 percent favorability. Also remember that many irregularities were reported in the 2020 election which is why many Americans call him President *. And then there is the centerpiece of his agenda, the Build Back Better legislation, that went down in flames in the US Senate. So the claim that Americans support Biden's policies is not strictly true. It's more like we're stuck with his policies until we get rid of him either with impeachment, the 25th Amendment or the 2024 election.

This place is crawling with Biden trolls. No one who sees what a shithead the US has in the White House would support his policies.
Least of all Trump supporters... if Trump were still in the White House this war would never have happened. Trump is a rational businessman who never would have dreamed of trying to shut down an economy that supplies most of the world with its essential commodities.
Either you're being deliberately obtuse, or an idiot. There's not a single real poster here defending Biden

That's laughable. You support his stupid foreign policies to the letter. He's deliberately prolonging the war so he can grind down the US economy and impose more control on you. Only a troll would be so stupid as to fail to see what he's doing.

Putin doesn't care what the world thinks. Xi doesn't care what the world thinks. That is the attitude America needs to take. They're never going to love you, quit wasting your resources and money.

if Trump were still in the White House this war would never have happened.
Exactly. Trump's policies would have kept oil prices low and would have threatened Putin with nukes if he invaded while working with Putin to expand Russian influence in Asia to help contain the Chinese and combat Islamists and the Taliban. What a missed opportunity that was.

^ This is essentially what John Mearsheimer has been arguing for - a policy based on realism instead of wishful thinking and liberal imperialist nonsense.
Russia would have been a key part of Trump's containment strategy for China. Instead the Biden people are spouting all the old Obama and Clinton bullshit about how "the democracies" are fighting "authoritarian" regimes... as if Ukraine's one-party dictator is a "democrat."
No one outside Washington or London takes this rhetoric seriously.

To those of us who have been suffering from Obama and his puppet Biden for a lot longer than the last two years, the concern troll shit here is laughable. The Obambiden Collective has been the one who's been exporting American industry to, among others, Putin's oligarghy, which uses the resulting wealth to make war and fund trolls who blame Biden for... some pissant sanctions.
They're concerned about India? Here, take a hint: Sri Lanka is now bankrupt not because of Biden but because the local Chinese-appointed puppet decided to destroy agriculture there. They slept through it while having a wet dream about Putin. Same situation wrt Lebanon. Hezbollah, who's Putin's and Iran's proxies, have bankrupted the country and blown up a major part of Beiruit along the way.
Biden pretends to fight Putin and Putin and his trolls pretend to fight Biden, but it's all kayfabe. Meanwhile, Putin's the one who's wearing down the Russian military when he should have been spending his 200 billion dollar personal fortune on new tires. He's good at manipulating his western puppets while pretending to fight them and paying trolls to blame them for the consequences but not good at _actual military operations_.

I could care less others think is in 'our' interests.
You mean you couldn't care less?
Idiomatically, both mean exactly the same thing. Like our spelling and irregular grammar, designed to trip up non-native speakers into trying to parse the unparseable.
ensuring that another generation of Indians will bitterly resent America and that India will remain neutral...
Neutral would be lovely after all those decades of Socialist India siding with the Soviet Union while claiming to be neutral. Much as I love India —between all my parents’ Indian friends, Rudyard Kipling (sorry, I know y’all hate that, but I fell in love with India while reading Kim), and Mr. Wife’s wonderful experience working over there in 1990-‘91 — India will ever be only for India. Which is fine — as Rabbi Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?”, but it would be nice if other countries accorded us the same rather than threatening to stop liking us if we don’t do their bidding' even as so many of their best and brightest so eagerly emigrate to our shoes.

John Mearsheimer is the only US foreign policy expert left (except Kissinger) who still talks sense. He says the US goals were to create a western "bulwark" next to Russia's capital by incorporating Ukraine into NATO and to make InrIne into an EU liberal democracy. Mearsheimer has said that Putin's goals all along have been to thwart the above -- by "wrecking" (Mearsheimer's term) Ukraine.
This is exactly what has happened. At least 1/4 of Ukraine's infrastructure has been obiterated. By end of summer 3/4 of Ukraine (outside of Donbas) will be obliterated. As to the other goals, NATO membership is out of the question and Ukraine is now a one-party dictatorship.
It's a pity that John Mearsheimer is not advising US policy. The world would have been spared a great deal. Ukraine would be neutral and at peace. The US would still be prosperous and free, and would have gained an extremely valuable partner with which to completely encircle and contain the only real threat to the US... which, as Mearsheimer tried to remind the Washington lunatics, is Chjna.

@trailingwife - thank you for this courteous reminiscence.
I fell in love with India while reading Kim
A lovely and cruel country that has broken many hearts.
wonderful experience working over there in 1990-‘91
A time of great hope - expectations of change for the better... most of them unrealized (see above)
India will ever be only for India. Which is fine
As any sensible human ought to be
Kipling...
"Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,
Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgment Seat;
But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,
When two strong men stand face to face, tho' they come from the ends of the earth!"

Re. Kim, if you'd like a glimpse of how beautiful India was before it was industrialized, see the 1950s Hollywood version of Kim with (I think) Errol Flynn as Mahbub Ali the undercover English spy / horse trader. The colors oddly seem right.
Flynn or whoever plays Mahbub Ali very well. The whole thing is nicely done. India was astonishingly beautiful back then.
[REDSTATE] A jury in Alexandria, Virginia, Thursday convicted a member of the brutal ISIS terror cell known as "The Beatles." The group was particularly savage, even by terrorists’ standards, and reportedly beheaded three hostages while subjecting a fourth to unimaginable cruelty.
The group was dubbed "The Beatles" because of their British accents. The charges included lethal hostage-taking and conspiracy to commit murder.
According to Rooters, the convicted terrorist, whose name I don’t care enough to type, could have faced a possible death sentence ...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead... . Prosecutors, however, have indicated they will only seek life in prison. Why?!
RedState’s Bonchie in a 2019 article described how the two surviving members of the group angled to get extradited to the United States instead of facing a judge in Iraq, where they doubtless would have been treated more harshly. (A third member, known as "Jihadi John," was blown away in a Hellfire missile dronezap in Syria in 2015. Another was caught by Ottoman Turkish security and sent to prison.)
The remaining pair refused to accept responsibility for their crimes. CNN ...the organization formerly known as the Cable News Network. Now who knows what it might stand for... interviewed them in 2018:
Confronted by CNN with the fact several of their former hostages and alleged victims had said they recognized their faces and voices from previous interviews, Elsheikh declined to comment on what he said would be a legal matter. "It’s just an accusation, legally speaking. You know, if Britannia said ’we are going to deal with you by barbaric law, or with law from the medieval ages,’ then hang, draw and quarter me. But that’s not the case. I’m just merely pointing that out." Kotey offered a similarly veiled denial and refused to be drawn on specific allegations.

Re #1: Frank G, IIRC, I don't think prisoners in a supermax prison have much contact with other inmates, so chances of him getting shanked should be low.

[FOXLA] A former Democratic political donor who supplied drugs to two men who overdosed in his West Hollywood apartment was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in federal prison.
Ed Buck ...Big time Dem donor accused of being a homosexual predator. By the time the third party boy corpse is found OD'd in your house you need a really good lawyer really bad... , who was found guilty last year of nine felony counts, faced between 20 years and life in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
In a sentencing memorandum, federal prosecutors said he lured young Black men who were often experiencing homelessness, addiction, and/or poverty to his apartment for sexually charged sessions in which he would inject them with methamphetamine and drug them with sedatives, with and without their consent.
"Buck's insatiable appetite for injecting people turned lethal twice," according to the memo, which recommends a life sentence.
"He will be a danger to the community until the day he dies," Assistant U.S. Attorney Chelsea Norell told the court.
Before he was sentenced, Buck spoke briefly to U.S. District Judge Christina A. Snyder, and apologized "for my part in the tragic deaths of Gemmel and Timothy."
"These are men I cared for and loved," Buck said. "I did not cause their deaths."
He asked Snyder to "look at the good in my life," saying he is not the caricature of a "meth-fueled ax killer" that the government portrayed him to be.
Snyder called the case "one of the most difficult and tragic" she has ever presided over.
"These lives mattered," she said. "What happened here was reprehensible conduct."

He's nearly 70 and will likely be pardoned soon due to medical necessity. The Washington D.C. community sticks together, just ask any of the visitors to Little St James Island.
