Somali military says killed seven Al Shabab militants

Update from Garowe at 9:10 p.m. ET — the same story in words rather than video:
Somalia's security forces from the SNA Force continued with the crackdown against Al-Shabaab militants on Friday, just over a week after Hassan Sheikh Mohamud took over from President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who was in charge for five years.

Farmajo had been accused of failing to restore security in the country, a key point that drove campaigns that were concluded recently. Under his administration, there was a resurgence of Al-Shabaab terrorists, who control large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia.

According to the army, the Somali National Army [SNA] killed seven Al-Shabaab militants on Friday in the southern part of the country, arresting two of them in the process. This was the first major crackdown since Hassan Sheikh took over leadership.

The Chief of Defense Forces General Odowaa Yusuf Rageh says the operation was carried out in Middle Shabelle within War-Ise village, where the elite Danab Special Forces tool part. During the crackdown, Al-Shabaab military trucks were confiscated.

The army chief told state-owned Somali National Television [SNTV] that weapons and money which terrorists have been extorting from the locals were recovered during the operation. The militants use the money to carry out their operations.

"The purpose of the operation was to prevent terrorist attacks against the Somali people," he said, adding that several al-Shabab bases in the area, as well as illegal mobile courts where they used to harass civilians, were destroyed.

In recent weeks, the Al-Shabaab militants have intensified operations against government soldiers on various Forward Operating Bases. A fortnight ago, the Al-Shabaab attacked the ATMIS troops, the Burundian contingent at El-Baraf Forward Operating Base, killing over 30 soldiers.

'Kill Switch And Detentions': Bush-Era FOIA Docs Reveal Government Plans For Apocalyptic Events
Zero Hedge waxes indignant that following a serious emergency the president — George W. Bush in this case — made a point of examining his legal options as chief executive.
Previously classified files obtained by the Brennan Center for Justice reveal that the 2004 George W. Bush administration conducted a holistic review of the president's emergency powers, with the goal of modernizing a set of secret plans for continuity-of-government in a nuclear war.

The George W. Bush Presidential Library turned over 500 out of 6,000 pages of the documents, known as "presidential emergency action documents" (PEADs), which "shed troubling new light on the powers that modern presidents claim they possess in moments of crisis," according to the Brennan Center, which obtained the records through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

PEADs were created during the cold war, when the chance of a Soviet nuclear strike was at its peak. Early drafts reportedly rested on broad interpretations of executive powers. According to official reports from the 1960s, various PEADs authorized the president to enact measures such as suspending habeas corpus, to detain "dangerous persons" within the country, to censor news media, and to prevent international travel.

In light if 9/11, one Bush administration official viewed updating the PEADs an "urgent and compelling security effort, especially in light of ongoing threats."

While the Brennan Center was unable to obtain more recent PEADs, the documents show "some of the most disturbing aspects of early-Cold War emergency action documents" were maintained at least throughout 2008.

Here are the specific findings via the Brennan Center:

CONTROLLING COMMUNICATIONS
At least one of the documents under review was designed to implement the emergency authorities contained in Section 706 of the Communications Act. During World War II, Congress granted the president authority to shut down or seize control of “any facility or station for wire communication” upon proclamation “that there exists a state or threat of war involving the United States.”

This frighteningly expansive language was, at the time, hemmed in by Americans’ limited use of telephone calls and telegrams. Today, however, a president willing to test the limits of his or her authority might interpret “wire communications” to encompass the internet — and therefore claim a “kill switch” over vast swaths of electronic communication.

And indeed, Bush administration officials repeatedly highlighted the statute’s flexibility: it was “very broad,” as one official in the National Security Council scribbled, and it extended “broader than common carriers in FCC [Federal Communications Commission] juris[diction].”
Other subheads:
Detention authority
Inhibiting the right to travel
Triggering other emergency powers

Forest Service says it started all of New Mexico's largest wildfire
“We’re the government and we’re here to help.”
[Reuters] Two blazes that grew into New Mexico's largest ever wildfire were both started by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), the agency said on Friday, prompting the state's governor to demand the federal government take full responsibility for the disaster.

Forest Service investigators determined the Calf Canyon Fire was caused by a "burn pile" of branches that the agency thought was out but reignited on April 19, the Santa Fe National Forest said in a statement.

That blaze on April 22 merged with the Hermits Peak Fire, which the USFS started with a controlled burn that went out of control on April 6, the agency previously reported.

The combined blaze has so far torched over 312,320 acres(126,319 hectares) of mountain forests and valleys, an area approaching the size of greater London, and destroyed hundreds of homes.

"The pain and suffering of New Mexicans caused by the actions of the U.S. Forest Service – an agency that is intended to be a steward of our lands – is unfathomable," New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement.

Lujan Grisham said the USFS investigation was a step towards the federal government taking full responsibility for the destruction of property, displacement of tens of thousands of residents, and millions in state spending caused by the fire.

Joe Biden's loose lips could sink ships
[NY Post] Is Joe Biden crazy like a fox, or just crazy?

That’s the question careening around the world after the president said last week that the United States would respond militarily if China invades Taiwan.

The shocking remark in Tokyo came just two months after Biden, on a visit to Poland, insisted Vladimir Putin “cannot remain in power” because of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.

Both bombshells sent the White House into DEFCON damage control as aides rushed out “clarifications” to insist there was no change in longstanding policies. They said the United States is still only committed to selling Taiwan military equipment to defend itself and claimed Biden was definitely not talking about “regime change” in Russia.

In both cases, their attempts amounted to denials the president said what he clearly said. That set off a round of accusations that the unelected staff was subverting the commander in chief and added fresh impetus to questions of whether Biden is really running the White House.

Given the many walk-backs, cleanups and clarifications during the brief Biden era, these two incidents would be fairly routine — and almost comical — except for the serious subject matters and the president’s own additional statements.

For example, the Tokyo remarks were the third time since he took office that Biden essentially said the same thing about militarily defending Taiwan. Either he means it, or he’s lost it.

... The growing global tensions and doubts about the president’s ability to manage them recall Robert Gates’ infamous assertion that Biden “has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national-security issue over the past four decades.”

Gates made the stinging comment in a 2014 memoir, and last year cited Biden’s botched, chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan as current evidence.

That history, coupled with the rampant domestic disasters defining Biden’s term, means we are witnessing him at a later stage of life in a bigger job making bigger, more dangerous mistakes.

Finally, it is fair but not very comforting to recall Barack Obama’s warning about his former vice president: “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to f- -k things up.”

IDF, Cyprus kick off joint military exercise
[Jpost] Part of Chariots of Fire, troops from IAF, Navy and elite commando units will simulate war deep inside Lebanon.

SHARED INTERESTS
Israel and Cyprus and neighboring Greece are close allies and share a number of strategic interests. While all three have shared economic interests, such as the ambitious project to build an undersea gas pipeline from Israel to Cyprus to Crete to mainland Greece, the countries also hope to keep the Russian-Iranian-Hezbollah axis from growing.

In light of new rapprochement between Israel and Turkey, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu reportedly sought an explanation for the drill during his recent visit to Israel. According to KAN public broadcaster, Jerusalem informed Ankara that the massive training exercise in Cyprus was related solely to military training.

Turkish troops invaded and occupied the northern part of Cyprus in 1974 and tensions between Larnaca and Ankara remain tense.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Today in History: A Christian 'Mustard Seed' Liberates Spain From Islam
[PJ] Nearly thirteen hundred years ago today, on May 28, 722,* a little-known but profoundly important battle was waged, setting the tone for the next eight hundred years of Christian/Muslim "coexistence" in Spain: the Battle of Covadonga.

Ten years earlier, Arabs and Africans — "Moors," under the banner of Islam — had "godlessly invaded Spain to destroy it," to quote from the Chronicle of 754. Once on European soil, they "ruined beautiful cities, burning them with fire; condemned lords and powerful men to the cross; and butchered youths and infants with the sword."

After meeting and beating Spain’s Visigothic nobles at the Battle of Guadalete — "never was there in the West a more bloody battle than this," wrote the Muslim chronicler al-Hakam, "for the Muslims did not withdraw their scimitars from them [Christians] for three days" — the invaders continued to penetrate northward into Spain, "not passing a place without reducing it, and getting possession of its wealth, for Allah Almighty had struck with terror the hearts of the infidels."

Such terrorism was intentionally cultivated, in keeping with the Koran (3:151, 8:12, etc.). For instance, the invaders slaughtered, cooked, and pretended to eat Christian captives, while releasing others who, horrified, fled and "informed the people of Andalus [Spain] that the Muslims feed on human flesh," thereby "contributing in no small degree to increase the panic of the infidels," wrote al-Maqqari, another Muslim chronicler.

Contrary to the claim that, seeing Muslim rule was no worse and possibly preferable to Visigothic rule, Spain capitulated easily, even Muslim chroniclers note how "the Christians defended themselves with the utmost vigor and resolution, and great was the havoc that they made in the ranks of the faithful." In Córdoba, for example, a number of Spaniards holed themselves up in a church. Although "the besieged had no hopes of deliverance, they were so obstinate that when safety was offered to them on condition either of embracing Islam, or paying jizya, they refused to surrender, and the church being set on fire, they all perished in the flames," wrote al-Maqqari. The ruins of this church became a place of "great veneration" for later generations of Spaniards, because "of the courage and endurance displayed in the cause of their religion by the people who died in it."

In the end, native Spaniards had two choices: acquiesce to Muslim rule or "flee to the mountains, where they risked hunger and various forms of death." Pelagius, better known as Pelayo (685—737), a relative of and "sword-bearer" to King Roderick, who survived Guadalete, followed both strategies. After the battle, he retreated north, where Muslim rule was still tenuous; there he eventually consented to become a vassal of Munnuza, a local Muslim chief. Through some "stratagem," Munnuza "married" Pelayo’s sister — a matter that the sword-bearer "by no means consented to." Having expressed displeasure at the seizure of his sister, and having ceased paying jizya (tribute), Muslims were sent "to apprehend him treacherously" and bring him back "bound in chains." Unable to fight the oncoming throng "because they were so numerous," Pelayo "climbed a mountain" and "joined himself to as many people as he found hastening to assemble."

-War on Police-
Uvalde, Texas police hosted 'active shooter scenario training' in March, had session called 'Stop the Dying'
[FoxNews] Police in Uvalde, Texas hosted a training on what to do during an active shooter situation at a school just two months before a gunman stormed Robb Elementary, killing 21.

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Department hosted an "active shooter scenario training" in March, just two months before the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday that left 19 children and two adults dead.

"Active Shooter for School-Based Law Enforcement" was the training hosted by the school district's police department on March 21, with "Peace Officers, School Resource Officers, and campus security officers" encouraged to attend.

The training was hosted at Uvalde High School, and covered topics such as "Stop the killing - solo response to active shooter events," "Stop the Dying: Transitioning to First Aid and Evacuation of the Injured," as well as an "Active shooter scenario training and evaluation."

Pictures from the training posted on the school district police department's Facebook page show officers role playing different scenarios that would be encountered during an active shooter situation. One photo from the drill shows officers in the hallway as individuals lie on the floor pretending to be dead or injured.

The training was mandated by Texas House Bill 2195, which states that school resource officers must complete training on active shooter situations.

According to a course guide for the active shooter training program, one of the objectives states that "the student will be able to compare/contrast an active shooter event and a hostage or barricade crisis."

"A simple barricade crisis develops when an armed actor(s) isolates themselves with little or no ability to harm innocent others. Barricaded subjects pose the greatest threat when attempts are made to enter the space and subdue them," the course guide goes on to state.

#9  From what I have read so far, the Incident Command System produced a default to the local School District Police Chief, who paralyzed much of the available resources urging dynamic breach, by defining the event, beyond all evidence, as a barricaded subject, not an active shooter. It was the BORTAC "mutiny" that ended the disaster. Somehow, adherence to Incident Command training froze better leaders, and the post-mortem may well find tragic incompetence and cowardice as a root cause. The lessons of Columbine were learned, but in this case were trumped by the reality that in crisis, "not all the brothers are valiant".

Science & Technology
Gluten-free: What does that mean?
[Mayo Clinic] Gluten is a protein found in certain grains, such as wheat, barley, rye, and a cross between wheat and rye called triticale.

A gluten-free diet helps manage symptoms of celiac disease and other medical conditions associated with gluten consumption. This type of diet also has gained popularity among people without gluten-related medical conditions. The claimed benefits of the diet are improved health, weight loss and increased energy.

Removing gluten from your diet likely changes your overall intake of fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. Therefore, regardless of your reasons for following a gluten-free diet, it's important to know how it can affect your overall nutritional intake.

These medical conditions require a gluten-free diet:

  • Celiac disease
This is an autoimmune disorder in which gluten triggers immune system activity that damages the lining of the small intestine. Over time, this damage prevents the absorption of nutrients from food.
  • Gluten sensitivity
This causes some of the same signs and symptoms associated with celiac disease, including abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, foggy brain, rash or headache, even though there is no damage to the tissues of the small intestine. Studies show that the immune system plays a role, but the process isn't well-understood.
  • Gluten ataxia
This is an autoimmune disorder in which gluten affects certain nerve tissues, and causes problems with muscle control and voluntary muscle movement.
  • Wheat allergy
Like other food allergies, wheat allergy is the result of the immune system mistaking gluten or some other protein found in wheat as a disease-causing agent, similar to a virus or bacteria. The immune system creates an antibody to the protein, prompting an immune system response that may result in congestion, breathing difficulties and other symptoms.

Your health care team or a dietitian can help you make appropriate dietary choices to maintain a well-balanced diet with the diagnosis of any of these conditions.

    Other potential downsides:
Potassium Bromate - This cancer-causing chemical may be lurking in your bread

Democratic socialist congressional candidate defends calls for homeless people to occupy vacant homes
[FOX] Rebecca Parson, a Democratic socialist running for Congress in Washington State, defended her campaign video where she encouraged homeless people to break into vacant homes across the country to help her advance a potential housing bill if elected.

In an interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters on Thursday, Parson, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America,
...the political arm of the communists. Of course they want to remove barriers to their militant arm overthrowing the government...
who is running to represent Washington's 6th Congressional District, defended her controversial campaign ad, but clarified that she was referring to empty houses owned by banks and "corporations like Zillow and BlackRock."

"I’m just pointing out the fact that there are 600,000 homeless people in this country, 40,000 homeless veterans and one in five homeless people are kids. Meanwhile, we have 28 empty homes for every homeless person," she said on "Jesse Watters Primetime." "So I’m calling on all of us to think about the empty homes that are owned by corporations like BlackRock, like Zillow, like the banks, that are owned by those companies, those large corporations and not being used for what they’re intended for, which is actually housing people."

US stocks notch their best week since November 2020
[Aljazeera] Stocks continued to rebound from a steep rout that drove the market down for seven straight weeks, with rebalancing from institutional investors potentially lifting equities at the end of the month.

The S&P 500 wiped out its May losses and posted its biggest weekly gain since November 2020. Global stock funds saw their largest inflows in 10 weeks, led by US shares, according to a Bank of America Corp.’s note citing EPFR data. The Nasdaq 100 outpaced major benchmarks, with Apple Inc. and Tesla Inc. up more than 4%. Dell Technologies Inc. surged as revenue topped estimates. The dollar fell, while Treasuries fluctuated. US markets will be closed Monday for a holiday.

VDH - 'A Cabinency of Dunces'
[Townhall] As the nation sinks inexplicably into self-created crisis after crisis, debate rages whether President Joe Biden is incompetent, mean-spirited, or an ideologue who feels the country's mess is his success.

A second national discussion revolves around who actually is overseeing the current national catastrophe, given Biden's frequent bewilderment and cognitive challenges.

But one area of agreement is the sheer craziness of Biden's cabinet appointments, who have translated his incoherent ideology into catastrophic governance.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas has essentially nullified federal immigration law. Over 2 million foreign nationals have illegally crossed the southern border without audit -- and without COVID vaccinations and tests during a pandemic.

Mayorkas either cannot or will not follow federal law.

But he did create a new Disinformation Governance Board. To head his new Orwellian Ministry of Truth, he appointed Nina Jankowicz -- an arch disinformationist who helped peddle the Russian collusion, Steele dossier, and Alfa Bank hoaxes.

While Jankowicz's adolescent videos and past tweets finally forced her resignation, Mayorkas promises his board will carry on.

In the days before the recent Virginia election, grassroots parent groups challenged critical race theory taught in the schools.

In reaction and under prompts from teachers' unions, Attorney General Merrick Garland directed both the FBI and the Justice Department to establish a special task force apparently to "investigate threats" from parents against school board members.

The FBI recently has been knee-deep in political controversies. It illegally doctored a FISA application to entrap an American citizen. Its former directors, under oath before Congress, either claimed faulty memory or admitted lying to federal investigators.

    Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
The Air War in the Southern Caucasus 1916-17
[CrossAndCockade] This article by Peter Dye came about because of the chance purchase of a dozen prints from aerial photographs taken in the Ottoman Empire’s Eastern Provinces during the First World War.

Researching their history has revealed new details of the fighting between the Ottoman and Russian armies, rarely mentioned in popular histories of the First World War, and of the tragedy that befell the Armenian communities of the Eastern Provinces. Many of the images show abandoned villages, their roofs missing and the population either killed or deported. The scale of the destruction is sobering, as is the rugged beauty of the landscape, dominated by high mountain ranges, steep-sided valleys, and swift flowing streams. Winter comes early to the Armenian Highlands and lasts deep into Spring. There are few roads or large towns, but numerous small settlements can be found, scattered across the valleys and high plains. The area is dominated by the Euphrates River and its tributaries that flow west from the mountains, north of the Taurus, before turning south towards Syria and Iraq. It is difficult to believe that a war was fought here or that these photographs represent the very first aerial views of this remote and inaccessible region, providing a unique record of a landscape and a way of life that disappeared with the Armenian genocide of 1915.

Most of the prints are uncaptioned and none are dated. Modern satellite imagery has allowed a few locations to be identified, but many remain ‘unknown’. The region has changed hugely over the last hundred years as rapid economic development (and, sadly, natural disasters) have literally transformed the land. However, it is hoped that someone reading this article may be able to identify the remaining locations. A further complication in this search is that most settlements have changed names over the last century. To make matters more difficult, many villages in the Armenian Highlands were known by several different names - depending on the community or language involved. Where possible, both ‘original’ and contemporary names are identified.

By early 1916, the war was not going well for the Ottoman Empire. Admittedly, the Allies had been forced to give up their bridgehead in Gallipoli, evacuating their forces in the face of an aggressive Ottoman defence. In Mesopotamia, the British had been surrounded at Kut, south of Baghdad, and would soon surrender. However, the initial Ottoman offensives against the Russians in the Caucasus and the British in Egypt had been costly failures. Although the Ottoman army had been bolstered by the loan of German staff officers, they lacked modern aircraft. As a result, Germany had sent increasing numbers of aircraft and aviation personnel to support the small Ottoman air service and, from March 1916, entire flying units. These ‘Pascha’ squadrons proved invaluable, although they were handicapped by the long supply lines to Germany.

The Allied withdrawal from Gallipoli allowed the Ottoman High Command to reinforce their positions in the Eastern Provinces. The experienced Ottoman 2nd Army, transferred from the Dardanelles, took over the southern part of the front while the Ottoman 3rd Army attempted to halt further Russian advances in the north. It was hoped that the Ottoman 2nd Army would threaten the flank of any future Russian offensive, however, most of its units were not in position when the Russians launched a major attack between Trabzon and Lake Vad, inflicting severe casualties on the Ottoman 3rd Army. Erzurum (present-day Erzerum) was captured on 1 March 1916, followed by Trabzon on 15 April and Erzincan on 25 July. There was now a danger that further Russian advances could see them link up with the British in Mesopotamia. The presence of a RNAS armoured car detachment, part of the British Armoured Car Expeditionary Force under Lieutenant-Commander Oliver Locker-Lampson, which helped the Russians capture Musch (Moush) in August 1916, may have made this possibility look all the more likely.

Iranian riot police fired tear gas and shot into the air to disperse an angry crowd of hundreds of people near the site of a building collapse in the southwestern city of Abadan, an online video analyzed Saturday showed.

One report by Iran’s semiofficial Fars news agency also acknowledged the unrest late Friday over the disaster this week that killed at least 29 people, with more feared still buried under the rubble of the 10-story building. This comes as Iran

The window was looking better all the time....

the country faced both assassinations and other violence this week into Saturday, even as its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard seized two Greek oil tankers apparently over Athens allowing America to impound Iranian oil in the Mediterranean Sea.

Videos shared online showed a massive crowd of hundreds near the Metropol Building on Friday night, with lights shining on its facade. A second video showed demonstrators at street level chanting: "Our enemy is here; they lie that it is America!" A third showed an angry crowd with one shot heard. The person filming turned and ran, shouting: "Don’t shoot! Don’t shoot!"

The details in the videos corresponded with each other and to known features of Abadan, some 660 kilometers (410 miles) southwest of the capital, Tehran. Foreign-based Farsi-language television channels described tear gas and other shots being fired.

Fars described the situation as a riot that forced police to intervene. It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was injured or if police made any arrests.

angry crowds have been gathering in Abadan since Iran on Thursday held a 100,000-person rally to mark the release of a new state-backed pop song called "Hello Commander."

On Friday, protesters in Abadan shouted: "In Tehran, there is wedding; Abadan is bleeding!"

Authorities acknowledge the building’s owner and corrupt government officials allowed construction to continue at the Metropol Building despite concerns over its shoddy workmanship. The building collapsed on Monday. Authorities have arrested 13 people as part of a broad investigation into the disaster, including the city’s mayor.

Rescue teams pulled three more bodies from the rubble on Saturday, bringing the corpse count in the collapse to 29.

The deadly collapse has raised questions about the safety of similar buildings in the country and underscored an ongoing crisis in Iranian construction projects. The collapse reminded many of the 2017 fire and collapse of the iconic Plasco building in Tehran that killed 26 people.

violence continued elsewhere in the country. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency said button men shot and maimed two coppers and a civilian Saturday in downtown Tehran. It said one officer was at death's door. Authorities offered no cause.

Separately, the semiofficial ISNA news agency said a gunman shot and killed a police brass hat, Maj. Abbas Raah Anjam, in Iran’s restive Sistan and Balochistan

"Last night... police captain Abbas Rahanjam was martyred and his wife was maimed," after they were shot by armed assailants, Khodabakhsh Pakirshahi, a deputy governor of the province's Delgan county was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

The shooting took place on the road from Delgan to Iranshahr city, the official said, adding that the captain's wife was transferred to hospital for treatment.

Assailants "using Kalashnikov rifles", fired at the police officer's car, and "bravely ran away from the scene," said provincial police chief Ahmad Taheri, according to the ISNA news agency.

"Police investigations have been launched to identify and arrest the on-the-run perpetrators" he added.

The province, bordering Pakistain and Afghanistan, is often hit by attacks or festivities between security forces and gangs, generally involving smuggling gangs as well as separatists or turban groups.

11:31 In Nova Kakhovka, utilities continue to clean up the streets of the city. Employees of the KP "Ecoservice" are mowing the grass in the old part of the city, and the road workers from the KP "Road Operational Administration" carried out backfilling of the roadbed on Dzerzhinsky Street.

11:02 On the entire huge arc of the front, that is, from Kharkov to Kherson, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to counterattack at two extreme points, actually near Kharkov and near Kherson. In the center of the arc, that is, where the main forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are concentrated, no counteroffensives are being undertaken. It is impossible to achieve any military result with the strikes that Ukraine is now carrying out, therefore the maximum that the Armed Forces of Ukraine can achieve is a brief media effect, as with that very migrating border pillar.

The director of the communal Elektroavtotrans hopes that the authorities will be able to provide fuel in the near future, but the chances of this are slim. In Zaporozhye, residents complain about problems with minibuses, it is impossible to get to the Shevchenko district. The authorities announced a rise in prices to 13 hryvnia for travel. In Akhtyrka, Sumy region, public transport may stop due to a lack of fuel and lubricants. According to preliminary estimates, fuel supplies will last only two weeks. The Ukrainian Ministry of Finance confirms the stable growth in the cost of fuel. The price for the A-95 reached 50.7 hryvnia, for the A-92 - 49.4 hryvnia.

And the icing on the cake: in Kyiv, they are already thinking again about the return of state regulation of fuel prices. The very one that was literally recently canceled precisely as part of the fight against the deficit. All this clearly demonstrates both the managerial failures of the Ukrainian authorities and their categorical inability at the moment to cope with the fuel crisis.

09:05 Personnelconducting combat by a subdivision of the Airborne Forces. Russian paratroopers, supported by artillery fire, suppressed the resistance of the stronghold of the Armed Forces of Ukraine located at an advantageous height and forced the Ukrainian militants to leave their positions. During the battle, paratroopers destroyed two armored personnel carriers and about 20 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

09:00 The Russian military used the latest heavy flamethrower system TOS-2 "Tosochka" during a special operation in Ukraine, TASS source.

#2  With US approval, Ukraine is giving up sovereignty to Poland in western Ukraine.

First was the revelation that Zelensky is invotibg (with US approval of course) Polish "peacekeepers" into western Ukraine -- even though there are no hostilities in that part of the country.

Then on May 24 Zelensky announced "joint customs control” on Ukraine’s border with Poland... “also the beginning of our integration into the common customs space of the European Union…."

This is an Anschluss of two former rivals. The enemy here is as much the Franco-German EU axis as it is Russua.

#3  The Polish power grab is not unexpected but is astounding nonetheless. It is an extraordinarily reckless and foolish maneuver on the part of the Biden administration. It represents an escalation of the war and a direct attack on western unity.

The Russians will begin to target the Polish "peacekeepers" and the war, rather than coming to a conclusion, will escalate to get another front, this time in the west on NATO's border.

    Extremely unwise. Insane.

Pro-Government Forces Faction Kills, Injures Civilians In Suwayda

Members of a Pro-government forces faction killed three civilians and injured four others on Saturday evening in al-Maqous neighborhood, east of the city of Suwayda.

“An armed faction led by Raji Falhout, who is supported by Military Intelligence, attacked a swimming pool in al-Maqous neighborhood, under the pretext of searching for wanted men, and killed three civilians,” local sources told North Press.

The faction also kidnapped four other young men, whose names North Press was unable to document.

The families of the victims blocked al-Maqous road and fired randomly. The sounds of bullets are still heard around, the sources added.

Despite the arrival of military reinforcements in early February to control the state of chaos, Suwayda governorate is still witnessing security chaos and the spread of gangs backed by government security authorities.

Since the beginning of this year, North Press has documented the death of forty-three people, as a result of the chaos and the insecurity prevailed in the governorate.

Classified Document: Baghdad might be under fire tonight

A classified military document issued by Baghdad's Operations Command warned of an attack that might target the ultra-secure Green Zone downtown Iraq's capital city, Baghdad.

Addressing the advanced headquarters of Baghdad's Operations Command in al-Karkh and al-Rusafa and the Commandos Brigade, the classified document obtained by Shafaq News Agency said that the Green Zone or Baghdad's International Airport might be a target of "indirect fires or drone attack on the evening of Saturday or Sunday."
That sounds like one of Iran’s Shiite catspaws is getting feisty, no doubt in response to the assassination of that Quds Force officer or the engineer killed in Parchin, both reportedly the work of Israel. But it’s American troops who are their usual target at the airport — the Israelis are beyond their reach back home.
The Baghdad Operations Command instructed the recipients to deploy undercover agents and field patrols in the vicinity of the potential targets.

Potential Turkish Invasion Of North Syria Puts US Troops At Risk – US Official

A US State Department spokesman told North Press on Friday that any potential Turkish invasion of the Syrian north puts at risk US forces and the coalition’s campaign against ISIS.

The official said that the US condemns any potential escalation in north Syria expressing his country’s deep concern of the serious consequences of the Turkish threats against the region.

He stressed, “It is crucial for all sides to maintain and respect ceasefire zones to enhance stability in Syria and work toward a political solution to the conflict.”

“We expect Turkey to live up to the October 17, 2019, Joint Statement, including to halt offensive operations in northeast Syria,” he noted.

Following Turkish invasion of the two cities of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad in October 2019, Turkey signed two ceasefire agreements, one with Russia and the other with the US stipulating ceasing all hostilities and the withdrawal of the SDF 32 km away from the Turkish border.

The SDF did withdrew from the border areas according to the agreement, but Turkey continues targeting the area before the eyes of Russian and the US which are the guarantors of the agreement.

The US State Department spokesman said, “the US is deeply concerned about discussions of potential increased military activity in northern Syria, and in particular its impact on the civilian population.”

“Any new offensive would further undermine regional stability and put at risk US forces and the coalition’s campaign against ISIS,” he noted.

Speaking of the military campaigns against the Islamic State Organization (ISIS), he said, “The group [ISIS] retains a significant clandestine presence throughout the country and carries out a campaign of small-scale extortion, recruitment, and assassinations to sustain itself and maintain its notoriety.”

It has also mounted persistent efforts to break ISIS fighters out of detention facilities to bolster its ranks and free individuals with particular operational skills, according to the official.

On January 20, ISIS sleeper cells carried out a series of attacks on al-Sina’a prison in Hasakah, northeast Syria, where thousands of ISIS members are detained, to break their ISIS inmates’ fellows out of the prison, as part of them managed to escape and hid within the residential areas surrounding the prison.

He indicated that “Without the continued operations of the Coalition and the SDF, the group could reconstitute and directly threaten the United States and our partners again.”

A military official for Combined Joint Task Force – Inherent Resolve (CJTFOIR) told North Press, “Our partners in Syria have shown great dedication and commitment to defeating Daesh.”

The official stressed that the SDF launches complex operations against ISIS in order to provide and guarantee security and safety of civilians in the region.

Though ISIS is “militarily defeated and unable to hold territory, their ideology and tactics still pose a threat,” the source added.

As a result, “the Coalition continues to work with our Partner Forces to ensure they can maintain Daesh’s enduring defeat,” the source stressed.

Iran shows off underground drone base, but not its location -state media

The Iranian army has given some details - but not the exact location - of an underground base for its military drones, state media reported on Saturday, amid simmering tensions in the Gulf.

State TV said 100 drones were being kept in the heart of the Zagros mountains, including Ababil-5, which it said were fitted with Qaem-9 missiles, an Iranian-made version of air-to-surface U.S. Hellfire.

“No doubt the drones of Islamic Republic of Iran’s armed forces are the region’s most powerful,” army commander Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi said. “Our capability to upgrade drones is unstoppable,” he added.

The Iranian state TV correspondent said he had made the 45-minute helicopter flight on Thursday from Kermanshah in western Iran to a secret underground drone site. He was allowed to take blindfolds off only upon arrival at the base, he said.

TV footage showed rows of drones fitted with missiles in a tunnel, which it said was several hundred metres underground.

The TV report came a day after Iranian Revolutionary Guards seized two Greek tankers in the Gulf, in apparent retaliation for the confiscation of Iranian oil by the United States from a tanker held off the Greek coast.

Greek authorities last month impounded the Iranian-flagged Pegas, with 19 Russian crew members on board, due to European Union sanctions. The United States later confiscated the Iranian oil cargo held onboard and plans to send it to the United States on another vessel.

The Pegas was later released, but the seizure inflamed tensions at a delicate time, with Iran and world powers seeking to revive a nuclear deal that former U.S. President Donald Trump abandoned, reimposing sanctions on Tehran.
    The Times of Israel adds:
The semi-official Mehr news agency said a cruise missile — named Heidar-1 — was also unveiled by the army. The agency said it was the first cruise missile capable of being fired from a drone.
Iranian state television said the tunnel was some 100 meters (330 feet) underground and was home to the Kaman-22 and Fotros drones, both capable of carrying cruise missiles.
    More from Rudaw:
Iran started developing drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), in the 1980s during its eight-year war with Iraq.

The US and Israel accuse Iran of dispatching fleets of drones to its proxies in the Middle East, including Lebanon's Hezbollah movement, the regime of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad and Yemen's Huthi rebels.

Video aired on state television showed Iran's armed forces chief of staff General Mohammad Bagheri and army commander Abdolrahim Mousavi visiting the underground site.

"More than 100 combat, reconnaissance and attack drones belonging to the army are kept for operations in this base located in the heart of the Zagros mountains," the report said.

State TV said the flagship of the fleet was the "Kaman-22", a drone equipped with missiles and able to fly at least 2,000 kilometers (1,245 miles).

The US Treasury slapped sanctions on the drone programme of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in October last year. It accused the Guards of being behind a September 2019 drone strike on a Saudi oil refinery, as well as a July 2021 drone attack on a commercial ship off the coast of Oman that killed two crewmen. Iran denied the charges.

Somalia: Man convicted of smuggling bomb into plane dies in prison
[Garowe] A man who was convicted of smuggling a laptop bomb into a plane in Somalia has died in prison, authorities confirmed, over five years since his trial and subsequent conviction which remains one of the most successful terrorism trials in the country.

Abdiweli Mohammed Maow, the former head of Mogadishu airport security, died on Friday, becoming one of the very many prisoners who have died in jail within the Horn of Africa nation. Details about his illness still remain scanty due to strict protocols.

The man, who was convicted for helping to smuggle a laptop bomb onto Daallo airlines has died in hospital after illness according to government reports. The court had termed him a dangerous "terrorist" with the capacity to destroy many lives within the country.

Maow was serving life for his role in the failed attempt

attacks within the Horn of Africa nation which is struggling with instability.

In recent weeks, al-Shabaab Death Eaters have been targeting security forces within the country, killing a number of them in the process. For instance, the Death Eaters raided a Burundian AU forces base in Central Somalia, killing at least dozens of soldiers in the process.

Elsewhere, one of Somalia’s greatest scholars Sheikh Ali Warsame has passed away according to reports. Sheikh Ali was a well-known Salafi scholar and the first leader of al-Ittihad al-Islam, a jihadi organization formed in the early 1980s which essentially paved way for the emergence of al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab has been the most dominant al-Qaeda associate within Africa and one of the most well-funded outfits according to State Department. The US has been working closely with authorities in Somalia to degrade the group, which controls large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia.

Turkey Heavily Shells Hasakah Northern Countryside

Turkish forces and their affiliated opposition factions (SNA) violently shelled on Saturday two towns on the contact lines, north of Hasakah, northeast Syria.

“The Turkish forces targeted the center of Abu Rasin town with heavy weapons at about 8 o‘clock this evening,” a local source told North Press.

Turkish forces also bombed the village of al-Ghebish, 1 km west of the town of Tal Tamr, north of Hasakah, with a barrage of artillery and mortar shells. The shelling caused material damage, according to a source in the Tel Tamr Military Council.

The source stated that Turkish drones are currently flying over the town of Tel Tamr.

On Saturday morning, the villages of al-Dashisha, al-Tawila and Tel Tawil, west of the town of Tel Tamr, were heavily shelled by the Turkish forces. No further information was received about the size of the damage, according to local sources.

Following the Turkish “Peace Spring” military operation in October 2019, which resulted in the occupation of the two cities of Tel Abyad, north of Raqqa, and Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), north of Hasakah, Turkey signed two ceasefire agreements, one with Russia and the other with the US.

The agreements stipulate halt of all hostilities there and the withdrawal of the SDF 30 km in depth away from the Turkish border in addition to conducting Turkish-Russian joint patrols in order to monitor the implementation of the agreements.

Founder of Japan terror group behind deadly 1972 attack on Israel airport set free
[IsraelTimes] Fusako Shigenobu, draped in keffiyah, apologizes for hurting innocents; 3 Japanese Red Army members recruited by Paleostinian terrorists, killed 8 Israelis, 16 tourists

Fusako Shigenobu, who co-founded the terrorist group Japanese Red Army,
...their stated goal was to overthrow the Japanese government and monarchy and help foment world revolution, which has nothing to do with killing Jews for “Palestine”. But like Antifa, which is currently harassing anti-abortion protestors, among other side projects while the main objective is on hiatus, two generations ago violent Communists happily loaned out personnel for the world revolution projects of other Communist groups...
released from prison Saturday after serving a 20-year sentence, and apologized for hurting innocent people.

She was freed just two days before the 50th anniversary of the terror group’s deadly attack at Lod Airport that killed 26 people and injured dozens of others.
Her husband was caught in the crossfire that day, which he totally deserved. So did she...
"I feel strongly that I have finally come out alive," she said, welcomed by her daughter and a crowd of news hounds and supporters in Tokyo, some waving Paleostinian flags.

"I have hurt innocent people I did not know by putting our struggles first. Although those were different times, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize deeply," said Shigenobu, who was draped in a keffiyeh — the Arab headdress which has become a symbol of Paleostinian nationalism.

Shigenobu was convicted of criminal masterminding the 1974 siege of the French Embassy in the Hague, the Netherlands. She was arrested in 2000 in Osaka in central Japan, where she had been in hiding.

The Japanese Red Army, formed in 1971 and linked with Paleostinian terror groups,
...specifically the hard left Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine...
was behind a 1972 machine-gun and grenade attack on the Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv.

Three members of the Japanese Red Army recruited by a Paleostinian terrorist group, opened fire and threw grenades at Lod Airport, killing eight Israelis and 16 foreign tourists.

The Japanese Red Army also took responsibility for several other attacks including the takeover of the US Consulate in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1975.

Shigenobu was not physically present in the attacks. A year after her arrest, she declared the group dissolved. Japanese media reports said Shigenobu had undergone surgery for cancer during her incarceration.

Kozo Okamoto, who was injured and arrested in the Israeli airport attack, was released in 1985 in a prisoner exchange between Israeli and Paleostinian forces. He is reportedly in Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...The land area formerly occupied by the state of Lebanon, before that Phoenicia...
Okamoto and several other members of the group are still wanted by Japanese authorities for their alleged role in attacks in the 1970s and 1980s, including the terror assault on the airport in Israel.
    One India adds:
Shigenobu herself, who left Japan at the age of 25, married a member of the militant PFLP and had a daughter with him in 1973.

#2  My initial thought would be for Israel to 'unleash' MOSSAD to do a snatch n' grab to bring her back to continue her life sentence, but this incident will most likely be swept quickly under the rug. Israel will want Japan's backing when they move against Iran. Japan will want Israel's backing when China moves against Taiwan. Why ruffle feathers!

    Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Ukrainian Perspective: Invasion of Ukraine: May 28th, 2022
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] 23:14 The Russians are going to use the obsolete T-62 tanks not for offensive, but for defense. As the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military District Oleksandr Starukh said on the air of the telethon, the occupiers have prepared a "defense in depth" in the south of the region. At the same time, he did not rule out another use of the T-62: "Knowing the Russians, they can find those who will agree to ride in these cars to their death. This is not a problem for the Armed Forces of Ukraine."

22:52 Severodonetsk is under the Ukrainian flag, Russian troops have not advanced further than the Mir Hotel and are suffering significant losses, said the head of the Luhansk OVA Serhiy Gaidai. Meanwhile, Kadyrov claims that Severodonetsk has been “liberated” and is under the complete control of the troops of the Russian Federation and the “LPR”.

22:13 Anti-Russian sanctions have nothing to do with the food crisis in the world, Kuleba said: "Sanctions against Russia have nothing to do with the unfolding global food crisis. The only reason for the shortage, rising prices and the threat of hunger is the Russian military, which is physically blocking 22 million tons of Ukrainian food exports in our seaports. We demand that Moscow end the blockade."

22:01 Zelensky named the main directions on the front: "These are Severodonetsk, Lysichansk, Bakhmut, Popasnaya. Our defense is held in unbearable conditions, I am grateful to everyone who withstands the onslaught of the invaders."

21:56 The Russians fired several missiles at one of the industrial enterprises of Krivoy Rog, said the head of the military administration Alexander Vilkul: "The plant is almost destroyed. Explosions are heard. Rescue units are involved in the elimination of the consequences of the fire."

21:54 Zelensky said in an evening video message that he expects "good news" next week: "Every day we are working to strengthen our defense. This is primarily the supply of weapons. Every day we are approaching the fact that our army will prevail over the occupiers technologically and shock Of course, a lot depends on the partners, on their willingness to provide Ukraine with everything necessary to protect freedom. And I expect good news on this matter as early as next week."

21:38 Luxury yachts associated with sanctioned Russian oligarchs have begun disconnecting from automatic location tracking systems to avoid arrest, writes The Guardian.

21:32 Podolyak denied Putin's statement that Ukraine refuses to negotiate: "They are generating lies in Moscow again. Real negotiations are possible if Russia refuses hypocrisy (we say one thing, we do another), leaves the south and withdraws troops. Until then, negotiations is led by a separate "delegation" on the front line.

21:09 Germany is ready to transfer heavy weapons to Ukraine, in particular, Gepard self-propelled guns, German Ambassador Anka Feldhusen said on the air of the telethon: "There are two aspects. You can buy them directly from the manufacturer, but you need the government to give permission ... I think that the process has already begun. They [supplies] have already been approved."

As for the delivery of Marder armored personnel carriers, according to her, this equipment is no longer used in Germany and needs to be repaired.

21:00 Today, at about 18:00, a Russian plane fired three unguided rockets at two border settlements in the Sumy region, the State Border Service reported. As a result of the shelling, one person was injured, a church, a kindergarten, private housing and a road were damaged.

20:49 The Russians launched a missile attack on Krivoy Rog, said the head of the military administration Alexander Vilkul. The blow fell on the exit from the city, detailed information is being specified.

20:42 In Ukraine, about 35% of the economy is now not functioning due to the war, Shmygal told BBC journalists. He also said that the invaders destroyed more than 25 thousand km of roads, several hundred bridges and 12 airports. More than 100 educational institutions, over 500 medical institutions and 200 factories were also destroyed or damaged.

According to Shmygal, from 30% to 50% of GDP has been lost, the monthly budget deficit is $5 billion. According to various estimates, the direct damage to infrastructure and the economy is about $600 billion.

20:15 The head of the Odesa OVA Maxim Marchenko said that the number of shellings in the region has decreased: "In our direction, the war takes on a positional character, but it is strongly activated in the information space. Now we must think critically and impartially."

19:53 The Armed Forces of Ukraine liquidated the Russian commander of the airborne assault battalion of the 104th airborne assault regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Dosyagaev, the strategic communications department reported. Dosyagaev won the Winged Infantry category at the Russian Army-2021 festival.

19:40 Ukraine has received so many Harpoon anti-ship missiles that they are enough to sink the entire Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation, said Serhiy Bratchuk, speaker of the Odesa OVA. He cited estimates by American experts, according to which five Harpoon missiles would be needed to disable an aircraft carrier, four to destroy a cruiser, and two to destroy a destroyer. One rocket is capable of causing serious damage when it hits a small ship or boat. For example, two Iranian ships were sunk by Harpoon missiles in the Persian Gulf.

19:18 A rocket attack on the railway station in Kramatorsk was launched on April 8 from the occupied areas of the Donetsk region - presumably from Shakhtersk or Starobeshevo, said Galina Prishchepa, spokeswoman for the SBU main department for Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

19:02 Johnson, following a conversation with Zelensky, said that London would continue to provide equipment to the Armed Forces of Ukraine: "I told President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky this morning that we are together with Ukraine for a long time. We will continue to provide equipment to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine defend our country, and We are working intensively to find ways to resume grain exports and prevent a global food crisis."

18:59 This afternoon, an enemy plane fired missiles at the border areas of the Sumy region. Six unguided rockets were fired at the border areas of the Sumy region, they fell outside the settlements. The Russians also fired five mortar mines from the direction of Troebortnoye settlement along the border area of the Shostkinsky district, the State Border Service reported.

18:57 The General Staff confirmed that the Armed Forces of Ukraine went on the offensive in the Kherson region, the enemy is defending at unfavorable lines near Andreevka, Lozovoye and Belogorka. The fighting continues.

18:52 Biden approved the abolition of the 25 percent duty on steel imports from Ukraine, the White House said. The duty was introduced under President Trump.

18:34 As a result of today's shelling of residential quarters of Nikolaev, one person was killed, six more were injured, reports OVA. Several apartment buildings were damaged.

18:17 Macron and Scholz, during a conversation with Putin, asked him to release the captured Ukrainian military from Azovstal, the French side said.

18:02 The speaker of the operational command Pivden Vladislav Nazarov reported on the counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the southern front: "The situation on the line of contact has its own dynamics. As a result of the counter-offensive actions of our troops, the enemy has suffered significant losses and has to take up defensive positions at unfavorable, under-equipped lines. The fighting continues."

17:48 There is no information about a possible Russian offensive on Kiev, Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar said on the air of the telethon: "I was in touch with the commander-in-chief on this issue, and with the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate Kirill Budanov. As of today, we do not have such information, which would indicate a possible offensive. But we must understand that the threat to Kiev and the entire territory of Ukraine is constant, because we have a war."

However, according to her, escalating the situation and creating "panic waves" can be beneficial for Russia: "Yesterday we were looking for roots where they could first appear on social networks. And it's worth saying that these are, indeed, Russian sources, and in that including efforts made by our not indifferent citizens".

17:43 On May 27, Russian troops launched a missile attack on the territory of the Chernobaevsk rural community, the Kherson Regional Prosecutor's Office reports. As a result of a shell hitting a private house under the rubble, one person died and six more were injured.

17:32 The Shevchenkovsky District Court of Kiev confiscated Rosneft's assets in the amount of almost UAH 23 million, the Office of the Prosecutor General reports. The funds are held in the account of a banking institution owned by Rosneft and controlled by the Russian Federation.

17:11 The military intelligence of Ukraine has received evidence of the use of microelectronics produced in the United States in the arms and military equipment of the Russian Federation, writes The War Zone. Foreign-made microcircuits were found by employees of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in the Russian Pantsir air defense systems, Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopters and Kh-101 cruise missiles.

17:00 A resident of Makeevka, Donetsk region, on whose tip Russia fired at Kharkov, was found guilty of treason by the court and sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property, the Office of the Prosecutor General said.

16:55 The occupiers have started the first loading of rolled metal products from the Mariupol port. Since there is no confirmation of the unblocking of the new gates, the metal will be taken out in small batches, said Petr Andryushchenko, an adviser to the mayor of the city.

16:46 Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia Buyar Osmani paid an official visit to the Kiev region.

16:27 In Berlin, it was reported that Scholz and Macron, in a conversation with Putin, called on the Russian president for an immediate truce and withdrawal of troops, and also offered him to negotiate directly with Zelensky and resolve the Ukrainian-Russian conflict through diplomacy.

15:41 Putin, in a telephone conversation with Macron and Scholz, reiterated that negotiations with Ukraine were frozen through the fault of Kiev, and the Russian side was "open to resuming dialogue." He also warned that "pumping Ukraine with Western weapons" threatens to "further destabilize the situation and aggravate the humanitarian crisis."

As for the difficulties with food supplies, they, according to Putin, "become the result of the erroneous economic and financial policies of Western countries, as well as the sanctions they have imposed." Russia is allegedly ready to "facilitate finding options" for the unimpeded export of grain, including the export of Ukrainian grain from the Black Sea ports, the Kremlin press service reported.

"Reducing tension" in the world food market, according to the head of the Kremlin, will also allow increasing the supply of Russian fertilizers and agricultural products, "which, of course, will require the removal of sanctions restrictions."

15:05 Europol will create an international working group to oversee weapons that, as a result of the war in Ukraine, may fall into groups of criminal groups. A similar situation already happened 30 years ago as a result of the war in the Balkans, and weapons are still in use. Director of Europol Catherine de Bolle noted that the agency records secret movements of terrorists known to the authorities and extremists ready for violence between Ukraine and the European Union.

14:47 The head of the Donetsk OVA, Pavel Kirilenko, denied rumors that electricity would be completely cut off in the region: "There will be electricity in the region. Our power engineers continue to do everything possible to ensure that the electricity supply is stable, and restore it as soon as possible after the shelling."

Kirilenko said that the Russians are conducting targeted fire on infrastructure facilities, so power outages are inevitable. He again urged local residents to evacuate.

14:23 Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar denied Moscow's information that Lyman had come under Russian control. According to her, fighting continues in the city: "We can definitely say that the situation is difficult, but the Armed Forces of Ukraine are fighting back."

13:58 The Russians have been firing rockets at the city of Merefa, Kharkiv region, for two days in a row, as a result, an electrical substation operating on solar batteries has been destroyed, the head of the Merefa community, Veniamin Sitov, said.

13:47 Zelensky said in an interview with Nieuwsuur that it only makes sense to negotiate peace with Putin, since "he has formed a state in which no one can make decisions."

The President also expressed his conviction that Ukraine will win the war with Russia - the only question is at what cost and when: "For me, victory means the return of all our territory. I don't think we can take back all of our territory militarily. If we decide to do it, it will cost us hundreds of thousands of lives. That's for sure. Every Ukrainian wants to return both Donbass and Crimea. I think we should at least return to the situation on February 24, when the Russians invaded our country. Then we can talk about restoration our territory through diplomatic channels.

13:20 There is not a single building left in Avdiivka, there is no water, electricity, gas, but humanitarian aid is being brought in and there is an opportunity to evacuate, the head of the city administration Vitaliy Barabash said on the air of the telethon.

13:07 Zelensky said that he had a telephone conversation with Johnson - they discussed strengthening defense support, ways to prevent a food crisis and unblocking ports, supplying fuel to Ukraine, stepping up work on security guarantees.

13:00 Russians shelled the residential areas of Nikolaev in the morning. Preliminarily, as a result of the shelling, civilians were injured, said the mayor of the city, Alexander Senkevich.

12:48 In Mariupol, the occupational authorities have officially announced that it is up to the residents themselves to restore electricity in their homes. At the same time, condominiums as a form of operational management of houses will be eliminated, instead, housing offices will be restored, said Petr Andryushchenko, adviser to the mayor of the city.

12:39 Ukrainian soldiers released from Russian captivity, most of whom were taken prisoner near Mariupol, spoke about torture and ill-treatment. At first they were kept in basements and outbuildings, then they were transferred to Donetsk, after that - to the pre-trial detention centers of Taganrog and Voronezh, Ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova said.

In captivity, Ukrainian servicemen were tortured - threatened with murder, beaten and humiliated, while torture was applied with particular cruelty to the officers and fighters of Azov. Ukrainian servicemen reported that the Russians, among other things, injected them with an unknown drug with the letter "M", after which they lost consciousness and memory.

The invaders forced Ukrainian soldiers to learn the poem Forgive us, dear Russians , the anthem of the Russian Federation, the history of the creation of the coat of arms and the flag of the Russian Federation. Electric torture was used. Male prisoners of war were severely beaten in front of female prisoners of war, and women were forced to have sexual intercourse. Medical care was not provided to the wounded, the prisoners were practically not fed, water was given at 1.5 liters per 30-40 people.

12:04 Ukrainian sailors caught and handed over to the border guards a life buoy and a light buoy from the Russian cruiser Moskva , head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine Serhiy Deyneko said.

12:02 The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the complete capture of the city of Krasny Liman.

11:44 Ukraine received M109 self-propelled guns and Harpoon missiles, Reznikov said: "This was the result of cooperation between several countries. Harpoon missiles will also strengthen coastal defense. The Ukrainian military has already undergone combat training for their use."

11:17 S&P downgraded Ukraine's credit rating in foreign currency by one notch - from B-/B to CCC+/C (close to default). The rating agency's experts believe that the war in Ukraine will drag on, and this will lead to a situation in which the payment of debts by Kyiv will be more dependent on international assistance.

11:15 Zelensky said in an interview with Nieuwsuur that he and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte have differences of opinion regarding Ukraine's membership in the EU: "I told him very frankly: if you think that we have no place in the EU, then you should say it clearly."

According to the president, Rutte told him that the EU has a place for Ukraine, "but then you need to go through certain steps." Zelensky agreed with the need for reforms, including the fight against corruption: “Yes, there are problems. And you have them in many countries. There are reforms that we still need and that we want to implement. And we are doing this not for the EU, but for ourselves. We want to realize them. But it takes time... We will also not be a member of the EU tomorrow. We would like to become a candidate member."

Zelensky noted that 62% of the population of the Netherlands support Ukraine's membership in the EU. Therefore, he believes that politicians should also support membership, because they are chosen by the people.

11:09 Kherson region switched to Moscow time, said the "deputy head" of the region Kirill Stremousov.

11:06 Over the past day, the Kievsky district of Kharkov was shelled, at night there were several hits of shells in Malaya Danilovka, fires broke out in two private houses. According to preliminary data, there were no casualties, Oleg Sinegubov, head of the OVA, said. They also shelled the Kharkiv region, in Slatino and Balekley two people were injured, one was killed.

10:50 The third meeting in the Ramstein format, which will be attended by ministers from more than 40 countries, will be held on June 15, NSDC Secretary Alexei Danilov said in an interview with Channel 24.

10:44 Slavyanskaya TPP has been stopped since May 27 due to constant shelling in the area, Donbasenergo reports.

10:19 Japan will continue emergency grant assistance to Ukraine and allocate an additional $166 million for this. According to the country's Foreign Ministry, these funds should ensure the transfer to Kyiv, in particular, of fire-fighting equipment, communications equipment, medicines, medical supplies through the UN Office for Project Services.

10:02 The General Staff announced the approximate losses of the enemy on the morning of May 28. The enemy suffered the greatest losses over the past day in the Avdiivka and Krivoy Rog directions.

    • personnel - about 30,000 (+250) people liquidated,

    • tanks - 1330 (+8),

    • armored combat vehicles - 3258 (+12),

    • artillery systems - 628 (+5),

    • MLRS - 203 (+2),

    • air defense systems - 93 (+0),

    • aircraft - 207 (+1),

    • helicopters - 174 (+4),

    • UAV operational-tactical level - 503 (+0),

    • cruise missiles - 116 (+1),

    • ships/boats - 13 (+0),

    • automotive equipment and tankers - 2226 (+0),

    • special equipment - 48 (+0).

09:36 In Severodonetsk, the enemy entered the Mir hotel, suffered huge losses, but remains in the building, said the head of the Luhansk OVA Serhiy Gaidai. He also said that Severodonetsk is not cut off now, "but, by and large, trucks will not pass there." According to him, there are a lot of shot cars on the Lisichansk-Bakhmut highway.

09:13 Russia fails to solve the problem of providing for the occupying units. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the commanders of the logistics units of the Russian troops, in order to avoid liability for the loss of equipment, prohibit drivers from evacuating the wounded and delivering food and fuel to advanced units. More than 3,000 rear vehicles of the Russian army continue to be in points of permanent deployment.

Since the beginning of the military invasion of Ukraine, the logistics troops of Russia have already deployed more than 45% of the available vehicles. However, it turned out that the entire logistics scheme of the Russians could not meet the needs of a significant number of troops at a distance of more than 100 km from their own border. The defenders of Ukraine have already destroyed more than 2,200 cars and tank trucks of the invaders.

09:03 In Mariupol, the occupants installed mobile shower tents because they could not establish water supply, Mayor's adviser Petr Andryushchenko said.

09:01 British intelligence reports that most of the Liman has been captured, and now Russia can move on to the next stage of the offensive in the Donbass. Liman is of strategic importance, as it is a major railway junction, and there is also access to important railway and road bridges across the Seversky Donets River.

Analysts suggest that in the coming days, Russian units in the area are likely to start crossing the river. And while the main effort will be at Severodonetsk, the bridgehead at Liman will give Russia an advantage in the potential next phase of the offensive - to Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.

08:45 A missile attack was carried out in the Sumy region, a farm enterprise was destroyed in the Putivl community, there is no information about the victims, said the head of the OVA Dmitry Zhivitsky.

08:43 The occupying "authorities" of the Kherson region reported that "for security purposes" they closed the borders with regions controlled by Ukraine.

08:41 Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov commented on the likely provision of long-range missile weapons to Ukraine: "The Americans are well aware that their actions are delaying the prospects for achieving peace. The United States is getting deeper and deeper into the crisis in Ukraine. This is fraught with unpredictable consequences for global security."

08:39 In Melitopol, partisans are posting leaflets against obtaining Russian passports. The guerrillas also invite the townspeople to a pro-Ukrainian rally on May 29, Zaporizhia OVA reports.

08:33 In the morning, the Russians hit the Zelenodolsk bulk of the Dnipropetrovsk region with artillery. There is destruction, but people were not injured, said the head of the OVA, Valentin Reznichenko.

08:30 In the sky over Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, two enemy air-to-air missiles self-destructed during aviation activity, OK Pivden reported. It is also reported that the Russians brought to the Kherson region a train of about 30 units of fifty-year-old reactivated T-62 tanks, as well as automotive equipment, armored combat vehicles, multiple launch rocket systems.

08:16 The representative of the Odessa military administration, Sergei Bratchuk, called Russia's announcement of supposedly safe routes in the Black Sea for civilian shipping a manipulation.

08:03 In the Luhansk region, the Russians managed to be pushed back to their previously occupied positions, another bridge between Severodonetsk and Lisichansk was damaged, but the passage between the cities is preserved, said the head of the OVA Serhiy Gaidai. According to him, the Russians had significant losses, and they were forced to retreat in the area of Severodonetsk, Toshkovka and Oskolonovka. At the same time, the enemy does not leave attempts to reach the rear of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and disrupt the logistics of the Luhansk region.

The enemy fired at Severodonetsk point-blank several times, at least three times - very powerfully, in some places street fighting began. As a result, 14 high-rise buildings were damaged. The adjacent village of Sinetsky, which the locals often call a farm, was also seriously shelled.

07:42 Over the past day, Russian troops have tried to develop success in the Bakhmut direction and reach the rear of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the attack was repelled, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports in the morning summary . The enemy carried out offensive and assault operations with the support of mortar and artillery fire in the areas of the settlements of Nagornoe, Vasilievka, Kamyshevakha and Vozrozhdeniye.

07:22 Among the Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine, there are no residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg, Podolyak said on Twitter: “By the way, why in the struggle for the“ Russian world ”in Ukraine, Buryats act as“ expendable ”people, whose corpses are littered with our fields, Tuvans, Dagestanis and Chechens, but not Muscovites and Petersburgers? The forced colonies of the Russian Nazi empire should ask themselves a few questions ... "

07:15 A storm in the Black Sea forced part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s ship group to retreat to shelters near Crimea, but two missile and three landing ships continue to act as navigation blockers and threaten missile strikes on the territory of Ukraine, OK Pivden reported.

07:09 The American Institute for the Study of War notes that Russian troops have shown themselves poorly in operations in the city, so they are unlikely to be able to move quickly through Severodonetsk. They continue to build up positions around the city, but did not cordon it off. Russian forces are likely to continue their gradual advance and may cordon off Severodonetsk in the coming days. APU slowed down the advance of the Russians.

Russian operations around Izyum remain at a standstill, and enemy forces will probably not be able to increase the pace of the offensive. Russian forces are advancing from Liman in a direction both to the southwest to support their forces in Izyum, and to the southeast to Seversk. It will probably be difficult for them to achieve any goal in the coming days.

06:51 The United States has signed a $625 million contract with Raytheon Technologies for the supply of Stinger anti-aircraft systems, Reuters writes. Thus, the stocks of weapons previously sent to Ukraine will be replenished.

03:50 The United States approved the supply of MLRS to Kiev, capable of hitting "tens of miles further than any artillery installation that Ukraine currently has at its disposal," writes The Wall Street Journal. The new assistance package will also include HIMARS systems, which have approximately the same missile launch range, but move on wheeled chassis.

00:01 Due to the position of Hungary, the EU fails to break the deadlock proposals for an embargo on Russian oil. On Monday, May 30, EU leaders will gather for an extraordinary summit. For more details, see the material Sanctions Deadlock .

Al Jazeera says it’ll go to ICC over reporter’s killing, bombing of Gaza office
Oh noes! Whatever will Israel do, Little Nell??
[IsraelTimes] Network says it formed international legal team to prepare a case dossier for The Hague, which is already probing Israel for alleged war crimes, though Jerusalem isn’t cooperating.

The Al Jazeera news network said Thursday that it would submit a case file to the International Criminal Court on the death of news hound Shireen Abu Akleh.

    The Qatar

They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
-based network and the Paleostinian Authority have accused Israeli soldiers of deliberately killing her. Israel rejects those allegations as a "blatant lie." It says she was shot during a firefight between soldiers and Paleostinian terrorists, and that only ballistic analysis of the bullet — which is held by the PA — can determine who fired the fatal shot.

An AP reconstruction lent support to witnesses who say the veteran Paleostinian-American correspondent was killed by Israeli fire, but any final conclusion may depend on evidence that has not yet been released.

Al Jazeera said it has formed an international legal team to prepare a case dossier to be submitted to the ICC. The court launched an investigation into possible Israeli war crimes last year. Israel is not a member of the ICC and has rejected the probe as biased against it.

Al Jazeera said the case file would also include the Israeli bombing of the building housing its offices in Gazoo

The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. City during last year’s war between Israel and the Paleostinian terror group Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,, "as well as the continuous incitements and attacks on its journalists operating in the occupied Paleostinian territories."

Israel said the building — which also housed the Gaza office of The News Agency that Dare Not be Named — contained Hamas military infrastructure but has not provided any evidence. The AP was not aware of any purported Hamas presence in the building and condemned the strike as "shocking and horrifying." No one was hurt in the strike, which came after an Israeli warning to evacuate.

"The network vows to follow every path to achieve justice for Shireen, and ensure those responsible for her killing are brought to justice and held accountable in all international justice and legal platforms and courts," Al Jazeera said.

Israel says it cannot determine whether Paleostinian button men or its own soldiers fired the fatal shot unless the PA hands over the bullet that killed Abu Akleh for ballistic analysis. The PA has refused to cooperate with Israel in any way, saying it doesn’t trust Israel to investigate itself.

A military source from the SDF in the town said that unknown gunmen had attacked a military vehicle, which belonged to the commander Lawrence al-Awwad, near the old police station in the town.

The China shock: Germany turns away from its biggest trading partner
[DW] China persecutes the Uyghurs and backs Russia's war in Ukraine. That's prompting Berlin to rethink its relations with Beijing. But this "systemic rival" is also Germany's biggest trading partner.

The "Xinjiang Police Files" document the scale and brutality with which the Chinese state oppresses its mainly Moslem Uyghur minority. The cache's publication comes at a time when many are thinking — and speaking out — about values-based foreign policy.

German politicians have expressed shock. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for a transparent investigation. Human rights, "which Germany is committed to protect globally," are a fundamental part of the international order, Germany's Foreign Office said in a statement.

    Southeast Asia
Bus bomb injures 2 in southern Philippines
[BenarNews] An explosion believed to be caused by an improvised bomb destroyed a passenger bus in the southern Philippines on Thursday, injuring two passengers, police and military officials said.

The vehicle, owned by the Yellow Bus Line Inc., was on a busy highway in Koronadal city when the device went off at noon, they said. A few minutes later, a second bomb went kaboom! in a vacant lot near a bus station in Tacurong city, but did not cause any injuries.

"There was no threat received by the bus firm. Our experts are investigating the incident," Koronadal Mayor Eliordo Ogena said, adding that the two passengers suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Maj. Andrew Linao, public information officer for the regional military command, said the earth-shattering kaboom was caused by an "improvised bomb."

"There’s a directive to all units to intensify checkpoint operations and intelligence monitoring," he said.

No one immediately grabbed credit for the bombings, but members of Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters
...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State...
(BIFF), a bully boy group that has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, have carried out similar attacks.

The bombings Thursday happened hours after the Philippine military confirmed that a top BIFF leader, Abu Turaife, and other fighters were maimed during an air assault on their encampment in Maguindanao earlier this week. The offensive left two gunnies dead and hundreds of families displaced.

Turaife is one of the hardcore leaders of the BIFF, a splinter group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which signed a peace deal with Manila in 2014 and controls a Moslem autonomous area in the south.

On Monday, the military launched air and ground assaults against Turaife and his men in Datu Salibo town in Maguindanao, displacing more than 1,000 residents.

Acting regional military commander Brig. Gen. Eduardo Gubat said Turaife was believed to have been injured during the assaults. Reports gathered by intelligence sources on the ground said he had retreated into a marshland area controlled by the BIFF.

"There were 17 gunnies including Turaife who were maimed," Gubat told news hounds.

Officials have blamed gunnies linked to the group for carrying out two roadside kaboomings in January 2021 that killed three and injured dozens of people.

More recently, at least six people were maimed in April when a homemade bomb went kaboom! aboard a passenger bus in the Parang town. Three months earlier, a 5-year-old boy was killed and six others, including his two younger siblings, were maimed in a similar attack in Aleosan town.

In both cases, IS-linked gunnies were blamed.

11 Azerbaijani citizens brought home from Syria
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] Two adults and nine children, including two sisters who lost their parents, have been returned to their homeland from a refugee camp in the Syrian city of Jerablus,
...a city in Aleppo Governorate near the border of Turkey and under the control of Turkey’s Syrian National Army sock puppets after they drove out ISIS. This suggests any prisoners they hold in quantity are likely ISIS...
the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said today.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Azerbaijani authorities periodically report on the return of natives of the country from the countries of the Middle East. From 2018 to the end of 2020, 248 children were returned from Iraq. In 2021, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reported on the return of children from Iraq, Syria and Turkey. On November 24, 2021, the Azerbaijani authorities returned to their homeland 12 natives of the country who were kept in the Amerna camp in the city of Jerablus in Syria. On March 31, seven Azerbaijani citizens were repatriated from the same camp. On May 25, two children who were kept in a correctional facility in Iraq arrived from Baghdad, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told in the press service of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry. The total number of Azerbaijani citizens repatriated from Iraq has reached 290 .

The return of 11 Azerbaijani citizens from Syria to their homeland was reported today by the press service of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry. "On May 25-28, 2022, 11 citizens of Azerbaijan were repatriated, including nine children and two women who were held in the Amerna camp in the city of Jerablus," the ministry's press release, translated into Russian by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, says. Among the repatriates are two sisters, six and nine years old, who lost both parents, the ministry said in a statement.

According to the ministry, first of all, the location, identity and belonging of the repatriated to the citizenship of Azerbaijan were determined. Then they were sent to Turkey, where Azerbaijani specialists conducted a preliminary medical and psychological examination and provided them with the necessary assistance. After that, the Azerbaijani embassy in Turkey provided the repatriates with a "certificate of return" and air tickets. On May 28, they flew to Azerbaijan by Ankara-Baku flight, the press release says.

All those who returned to their homeland upon completion of the paperwork will be transferred to their families or guardians. The Azerbaijani government intends to take all necessary measures for the reintegration and rehabilitation of repatriates, the ministry said.

In recent years, the Azerbaijani authorities have been repatriating children and women from Iraq and Syria from the families of people who once went to fight in these countries as part of various armed formations, Tofig Turkel, an observer for the Turan agency on the Middle East, told the "Caucasian Knot" earlier. "Some created families there, and children were already born in these countries. After the liquidation of these terrorist groups, the death, arrest or flight of militants, women and children of foreigners, including Azerbaijanis, were placed in special camps, shelters or were kept in places of detention. According as Azeri citizenship is established, these people are brought back in. It often happens that children have lost both parents, and it takes some time to establish their citizenship. After the return of children without parents, they are usually given to close relatives - on the paternal or maternal side. Usually such children are taken away by uncles, aunts or grandparents. If there are none, then the children are sent to orphanages," he said.

Libyan Army Frees 11 Hostages and Seizes Weapons

On Saturday, the Libyan elite army unit, known as Brigade 444, said that it had conducted a raid on human traffickers and fuel smugglers’ dens in Nesmah town, some 400km South of Tripoli.

In a statement, the Brigade announced that its forces managed to free 11 foreign hostages, who were being tortured. They were also able to seize large amounts of weapons and ammunition during the raid.

The Brigade indicated that the gang had demanded the families of the kidnapped pay a ransom in exchange for their release.

It added that 8 suspects were arrested, in addition to 6 trucks used for smuggling fuel.

The phenomenon of disappearances, rape, kidnappings, and the killing of citizens has spread across Libya. The Libyan state ranked 20th among the insecure countries, according to the Numbeo Crime Index, as the war-torn country received the high rating of 62.00 in the Crime Index.

The capital, Tripoli, ranked 50th in the world, in the Crime Index classification for cities, and the second in the Arab world, with the Syrian city of Damascus coming first.

The city of Tripoli got 64.27 degrees on the Crime Index, as the classification considers Tripoli one of the cities with a high crime level.

The Crime Prevalence Index aims to assess the general level of crime in 135 countries around the world. The Crime Index is based on several criteria, such as murder, robbery, and rape.

Notably, Amnesty International recently urged the European Union (EU) to reverse its migration policy on Libya. It described the approach as helping return migrants to “hellish” conditions in the North African country.

In a statement, the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) said that more than 82,000 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya. This has been happening for the past five years, since the EU began its cooperation with Libyan authorities to block migrants from reaching European shores, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP).

In 2021, a total of 32,425 migrants were rescued and returned to Libya, while 662 died and 891 others went missing off the Libyan coast on the central Mediterranean route, the IOM said.

    India-Pakistan
20 Years Of Nukes: What Have We Learnt?
Apparently a subject that requires a great deal of ink to explore. Here is the first part of it.
[Dawn] A score and day ago from today, Pakistain conducted five nuclear tests at Ras Koh, Chagai, codenamed Chagai-I. Two days later, Pakistain conducted another test, this time in Kharan, codenamed Chagai-II. With six tests done on May 28 and May 30, 1998, Pakistain completed its hot-test validation of devices of different designs.
five nuclear tests at Ras Koh, Chagai, codenamed Chagai-I. Clever!
Since then, Pakistain has not hot-tested any other nuclear device, though it has steadily improved its missile capability, the most reliable carriers for nuclear warheads.

Earlier, on May 11 and 13, India had conducted five tests. Codenamed Pokhran II, India tested three devices: Shakti 1, 2 and 3. The world was shocked while India celebrated. India’s home minister L.K. Advani warned Pakistain that the strategic balance in the region had changed. Another leader, Krishan Lal Sharma, was quoted as saying that India was "now in a position to take control of Azad Kashmir

Victorious Kurdish MP pledges to tackle state issues in Germany
BLUF: There are enough Kurdish citizens in this German state to swing an election.
[Rudaw] A Kurdish MP from the Christian Democratic Party (CDP) in Germany has pledged to tackle issues facing her state of Schleswig-Holstein after recently emerging victorious in the state's parliamentary elections, she told Rudaw on Friday.

Seyran Papo won by a landslide over the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the northernmost German state of Schleswig-Holstein, attributing her victory to the Kurds residing in the state who showed her great support.

"The Kurds living in Schleswig-Holstein supported me a lot," she told Rudaw's Hemen Abdulla, saying "the CDU has improved its policy towards foreigners in Schleswig-Holstein," and called on Kurds living in the state to seek membership in the party, which she claims was the only party that supported Kurds during their years-long struggle against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
    (ISIS).

Papo stressed the need for development in her state's capital of Kiel and admits the city has problems with regard to access to housing and lack of women's employment. She explained that during the election cycle, she went "from house to house wanting to know the details of the people's problems."

Kurdish support for Papo in Schleswig-Holstein played a pivotal role in securing her a victory over the SPD's leader, she claims, expressing her gratitude towards those who voted for her. According to the MP, her contestant for the seat had "a lot of voters and he even had a lot of support in Berlin," yet she overcame him.
