[Axios] The Army has suspended a three-star general's contract and placed him under investigation after he posted a tweet that appeared to mock first lady Jill Biden, USA Today reports.
The big picture: Retired Lt. Gen. Gary Volesky, the Army's former top spokesman, responded to a tweet from Biden that said the rights of women had been stolen in the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
"For nearly 50 years, women have had the right to make our own decisions about our bodies. Today, that right was stolen from us," Biden tweeted.
"Glad to see you finally know what a woman is," Volesky said.
Details: Lt. Gen. Theodore Martin, commander of the Combined Arms Center, suspended Volesky while the investigation is underway, Cynthia Smith, an Army spokesperson, told USA Today.
Volesky, who was in charge of the Army's 101st Airborne Division, had signed a contract after he retired to advise active-duty officers as a senior mentor.
Between the lines: Volesky's response is a breach of decorum for a retired military officer, USA Today writes.
It's an unusual step into partisan politics by an official the Pentagon is paying, especially since the department typically steers clear of such matters.
Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said it was a "mistake" to make a June 2020 appearance with then-President Trump in Lafayette Square. "My presence in that moment and in that environment created a perception of the military involved in domestic politics," he said in a video message several days later.
Following the Jan 6 insurrection, Milley and the other Joint Chiefs sent a memo reminding troops of their oath to the Constitution.
Flashback: Volesky responded to a tweet from Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) when she announced that she would be on the Jan. 6 select committee and that their "oath to the Constitution must be above partisan politics."

A guy of Mexican heritage turned me on to corn on the cob with mayo. Yummy stuff, but I'm just as content with butter, [seasoned] salt, pepper, and maybe a dash of some spicy pepper as Raj mentioned.
Got some last week at the store: 4 for $1. I'm always kind of curious where fresh corn comes from in June-July, but, there we are.

I've often thought that since Trump's total experience (like mine) was in the private sector, he wasn't expecting the massive and open defiance he got from people who were nominally his employees. Hopefully he's learned that lesson and will get rid of a lot more of them. And have Congress revise the Civil Service Act so that he can fire more of them.

The infestation in the DC federal workforce is massive, and they have no fear of accountability as long as they have some figleaf of an excuse to feign compliance. On Thursday, the Washington Free Beacon published new details about the Chinese oil shipments from the U.S. emergency reserves that Biden promised were tapped to "ease the pain that families are feeling" in the United States from high energy prices.
"The Biden administration sold roughly one million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to a Chinese state-controlled gas giant that continues to purchase Russian oil, a move the Energy Department said would ’support American consumers’ and combat ’Putin’s price hike,'" the Beacon’s Collin Anderson reported. "Biden’s Energy Department in April announced the sale of 950,000 Strategic Petroleum Reserve barrels to Unipec, the trading arm of the China Petrochemical Corporation. That company, which is commonly known as Sinopec, is wholly owned by the Chinese government."
Sinopec is also tied to Hunter Biden, whose private equity firm, BHR Partners, bought a $1.7 billion stake in the company seven years ago.
Hunter Biden’s lawyer told the New York Times in November that the president’s son, "no longer holds any interest, directly or indirectly, in either BHR or Skaneateles."

The regional army commander confirmed that those killed and captured on Friday were PULO members.
"Today eight men surrendered, admitting they are PULO. They also collaborated with a drug ring to create violence but there must be further investigation," said Lt. Gen. Kriangkrai Srirak, the commander of the 4th Army Region which oversees the Deep South.
Kasturi Mahkota, the head of PULO-MKP (Majlis Kepimpinan Pertubuhan or Party Leadership Council) questioned the army commander’s statement.
"I haven’t heard a report from the ground about the incident yet. But the accusation of PULO’s drugs involvement is not true," Kasturi told BenarNews.

Fifteen years into a joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade, clean water is one of the most pressing issues for the 41km-long strip, which is home to 2.2 million people. Almost 97% of the water in Gaza’s sole aquifer is no longer potable: without proper maintenance and with Israeli restrictions on imports, sewage treatment plants were overwhelmed years ago.
Untreated waste has flowed directly into the sea for more than a decade, creating an environmental disaster and polluting one of the only affordable opportunities for fun in the isolated Paleostinian enclave.
Over the last year, however, Gaza’s three internationally funded sewage treatment plants have been able to step up operations, in part owing to a more steady and plentiful supply of electricity. The improvements have reduced sea pollution to its lowest level in years, leading the local water authority to declare that 65% of the coastline is now categorised as "green" or "yellow", which means safe enough for swimming.
The rejuvenation of Gaza’s beaches is a major step in that it shows environmental cooperation between Paleostinians and Israeli is possible, said Gidon Bromberg, the Israeli co-director of EcoPeace Middle East, a joint Israeli, Paleostinian and Jordanian environmental peace-building organization, which played a big role in cleaning up Gaza’s seawater.

For the first time since the institution of the “all-volunteer force” in 1973, 2022 is shaping up as the most challenging recruiting year to date. The Army has announced that it will have to cut its size by 12,000 troops due to the inability to fill its ranks and, after five months into the year is at only 23 percent of its goal. The Air Force’s top recruiter has declared “warning lights are flashing” for meeting 2022 goals. The Marine Corps, which normally has little problem meeting and exceeding its goals this fiscal year, is likewise falling short of needed personnel. A recent Department of Defense poll asked young adults ages 16-21, “How likely is it you will serve in the military?” Approximately only 11 percent responded “definitely or probably.” And that is trending down, precipitously. Senator Thom Tillis (R – NC) summed it thusly: “To put it bluntly, I’m worried we are now in the early days of a long-term threat to the all-volunteer force, with a small and declining numbers of Americans who are eligible and interested in military service.” Adding, “Every single metric tracking metric tracking the military recruiting environment is going in the wrong direction.”
The debacle in withdrawing from Afghanistan, in addition to the in-your-face implementation of command directives that have nothing to do with fighting and winning wars, is largely to blame. Americans are rapidly losing confidence in our military, traditionally one of our most revered institutions. According to the Reagan Institute, confidence in our military has dropped to 45 percent, the sharpest decline and the lowest level since the surveys began. Sixty-two percent of those surveyed disapproved of the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. Eisenhower’s adage was spot on, but our current leadership doesn’t get it. Morale is key to our military institutions and their success. And, clearly, people don’t want to serve and put their lives and families on the line for a government that doesn’t value them.
Only with new leadership, and leadership that can disassociate itself from the onslaught of woke policies and reinstate the patriotic call to serve, will the United States restore our ability to win militarily. The damage has been done but we can recover. Make it happen this November and November, 2024. Our future as a republic depends on it.
