DNC Expected to Affect Cancer Patients with center closure for event
You would think these people would be a little more sensitive to cancer patients. What happens if one of these people dies during Obama's coronation? Will Obama's PAC buddies run commercials accusing him of murder?

On Tuesday, September 4th, the DNC will officially kick off. Tens of thousands from around the world will head to the Queen City and there's no secret, the convention will have a major impact locally, including on people battling cancer.

Matthews resident Sue Falco is fighting stage four colon cancer, and says the DNC will force a major cancer treatment center to close. Carolina's Hematology Oncology Associates on South Tryon will close for four days during the DNC, because of security and traffic concerns.

"It's kind of fascinating how an event like this impacts a city," Falco said.

Carolina's Hematology Oncology Associates will have two other locations open around Mecklenburg County during the DNC. An employee says South Tryon patients will be able to receive treatment at the two other locations.

"I'm very fortunate that I can drive myself to and from chemotherapy but I know a lot of people depend on family members who have to drive a distance to get to their therapy," she said.

Democrats snivel and whine that voters are disenfranchised because they have to drive a couple of miles to get photo ID so they can legally vote. Not a peep from them about sick patients risking their lives to get chemo treatments while they party it up.

For shame. Can you imagine the firestorm this would create if you substituted "RNC" in lieu DNC? The networks would have a field day exploiting these folks and Republicans would be accused of wanting people to die. Well, that's old hat, but you get the point.
I guess the DNC wants to show Romney how to kill cancer patients. Another reason I think the party conventions are a huge waste of time and money and too much of an inconvenience.

Tuvalu government to deregister Iranian-linked ships
The Tuvalu government has agreed to deregister any Iranian-linked vessel following pressure from the United States, New Zealand and Australia.

The Tuvalu Ship Registry issued a statement late last week saying it has been notified by its government to deregister the National Iranian Tanker Company’s vessels that carry the South Pacific island government's flag. The work has begun and is expected “to be completed in the shortest time practicable.”

The owners of a ship are masked when that ship carries the flag of a different country.

Rep. Howard L. Berman (D-Calif.) on Tuesday applauded Tuvalu’s actions, noting, “Iran is learning the hard way that we will not relent in applying crippling sanctions on the regime, and others are learning that evading international sanctions is a losing strategy.”

In a statement to JTA, Berman wrote, “This reversal by Tuvalu effectively stops these Iranian tankers from operating, denying the Iranian regime oil revenues it desperately is seeking to fund its nuclear weapons program and support of terrorism.”

In July, Tuvalu had issued a public statement that it would not comply with an international request to deregister these vessels, according to Berman

Tuvalu is the fourth government to cancel Iranian ship registrations. Cyprus, Malta and Tanzania no longer will register Iranian-linked vessels.

Egypt's Islamist president to visit US next month
Be prepared to give generously to the begging bowl, Obama.
Egypt's Islamist president will visit the United States next month, an aide said Wednesday. The visit could serve as a step toward cementing Egypt's longtime alliance with the U.S.

It will be Mohammed Morsi's first trip to the U.S. since taking office June 30 but not his first American experience. He received a doctorate in engineering from the University of Southern California in 1982.
Put it to good use, too...
Moving to reshape the former regime's foreign policy, which many Egyptians see as too pro-Western, Morsi chose to visit Saudi Arabia as his first trip outside the country as president, followed by a visit to Ethiopia. He is also planning a trip to China and Iran.

Presidential spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters that Morsi's three-day visit to the U.S. will begin Sept. 23. It will include stops in Washington and New York, where he will attend the U.N. General Assembly session.

The Brotherhood has been trying to counter concerns in Washington, sending delegations to the U.S. to argue that it is a moderate Islamist group with no anti-American agenda.
They leave their lips behind when they return to Egypt...
U.S. officials recently pledged additional foreign aid to Egypt, a gesture toward maintaining close ties. The U.S. has been giving Egypt about $1 billion a year in military aid for more than three decades.
Perhaps someone can explain why we need to maintain close ties with Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood...
China's Foreign Ministry said Morsi would make a state visit there Aug. 28-30. China is a key potential partner for trade and aid. From there Morsi travels to Iran.

Syria war empowers long-oppressed Kurdish minority
Last month, while the world's attention was focused on battles raging in Syria's two largest cities, a quiet transformation was taking place in the country's oil-rich northeast where about 2 million minority Kurds live.

In mid-July, regime forces began pulling back from several towns and villages near the Turkish border. They ceded de facto control to armed Kurdish fighters who have since set up checkpoints, hoisted Kurdish flags, and began exercising a degree of autonomy unheard of before.

It is an extraordinary development for a community that has long been oppressed and discriminated against by the Assad regime, one that threatens to upset a decades-long geopolitical balance involving Syria, Turkey and Iraq, and challenge old regional alliances.

"The Kurds are emerging as one of the major winners of the crisis in Syria," said Fawaz A. Gerges, director of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics. "They have begun laying the foundation for an autonomous region like their counterparts in Iraq. It's a dream-like situation for them."

Kurds see their chance to win the kind of autonomy that their ethnic brothers enjoy in Iraq. But this raises alarm bells for Turkey, one of the key state backers of the rebels trying to overthrow President Bashar Assad and a country where Kurdish rebels have been fighting a violent struggle for self-rule for the last 28 years.

Turkey is increasingly worried that the chaos in Syria will open up a new base for Kurdish rebels to press their struggle for self-rule. The government in Ankara has warned it would "not tolerate" any rebel threats from Syrian territory and has staged a number of military drills across the border to put a fine point on it.

The tensions feed myriad concerns that Syria's civil war could spill across borders into a wider regional conflagration.

Turkey has emerged as one of the most vociferous critics of the Assad regime and serves as a base for generals of the Free Syrian Army rebel group and the Syrian National Council opposition group.

In relinquishing border areas to Kurdish fighters, the Syrian regime may have had a dual motive — diverting forces from there to shore up overstretched troops fighting in the northern commercial hub of Aleppo and other parts of the country as well as sending a warning to Turkey.

Sinking Maldives Will Build Floating Gold Course
That's Maldives, not Malvinas.
Maybe you've already heard: The Maldives is sinking or being covered up by man-made republican global warming polar ice cap melting. So what do you do when your tourist-dependent country is slowly disappearing into the sea? If you're the Maldivian government, you create a series of floating islands that include a hotel and convention center, private villas, yacht club and 18-hole golf course.
If you can find somebody to sponsor it, of course!
The Maldives is the epitome of paradise with its bone-white sand, towering palms and crystal-clear waters, but the low-lying chain of 1,190 islands in the Indian Ocean will not be around forever. Sitting at an average of just five feet above sea level (with 80 percent of the Maldives less than three feet above the encroaching waves), many scientists predict that rising water levels could submerge the chain by the turn of the century.
The only real question being - which century?
The $500 million joint venture with architectural firm Dutch Docklands International will create the largest series of artificial floating islands in the world. The islands will be anchored to the seabed using cables or telescopic mooring piles to keep the structures stable throughout the worst of the Indian Ocean's storms, while simultaneously minimizing the environmental impact.
And when Mother Nature proves the inadequacy of the design, there'll be plenty of UN disaster funding.

Canadian commissionaire suspended for anti-Muslim Facebook comments
A commissionaire who allegedly posted anti-Muslim comments on Facebook suggesting a mosque should be blasted with a rocket launcher has been suspended with pay, the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires said Monday.

The controversial comments, posted Thursday by Dan Speed on the I Love Downtown Victoria Facebook page, have now been removed. Speed's profile, which said he provided security for the Canadian Coast Guard and worked for the Department of National Defence, appears to have been deleted.

John Dewar, the corps' chief executive officer for Victoria, the Islands and Yukon division, said, "The Commissionaires is an organization that values diversity in our community and we have commissionaires from all backgrounds, so any expression of intolerance like this is unacceptable within our values and probably contrary to specific policies we have for conduct of commissionaires."

He said the commissionaire has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the corps' investigation. "If it is determined there was inappropriate behaviour, then corrective action will be taken, up to and including dismissal," he added.

Victoria police spokesman Mike Tucker said investigators interviewed a suspect, but he was not arrested or charged. Tucker said, "It's an ongoing investigation. We have been talking to people at the mosque and in the Muslim community to see what they want to have addressed and to bring them up to speed on the investigation."

He said police are looking into whether the alleged incident meets the threshold for a hate crime. Tucker added that the challenge for police officers is to determine what's an offhand comment and what's a direct threat.

He said, "Are the comments made in jest? Are they just stupid comments? Even if they are distasteful and inappropriate, does it constitute a criminal act? It's a tough balance to determine if it is a crime."

Police say they are taking the comments seriously. Tucker said, "I don't think there's any social appetite for something like this."

Nigerian government holding talks with Boko Haram
The Nigerian government has confirmed that it has been meeting with Boko Haram, the militant Islamist group notorious for terrorist attacks against Christians and others across the northern part of the country.

The dialogue began this month with a secret meeting between Boko Haram's deputy leader, Abu Mohammed, and Nigeria’s Vice President Namadi Sambo, security adviser Sambo Dasuki, and other top government officials. The meeting was held in Saudi Arabia.

Mohammed and Boko Haram confirmed the talks after they were first announced by Nigeria's information minister of information Wednesday.

Labaran Maku said, “The government is willing to negotiate because of the security challenges posed by the group who are attacking security formations, universities, and other government formations. The government welcomes any initiative that will usher in peace, security, and tranquility in the country, especially in the light of the security challenges that we have faced in the last two years."

48 killed in ethnic clashes in Kenya
At least 48 people were killed on Tuesday night during battles between members of the Pokomo and Orma communities in eastern Kenya's Tana River region.

The attacks happened when militiamen from the Pokomo side made raids in the Reketa area and slashed villagers to death before setting their houses on fire.

Joseph Kitur, deputy police chief for Mombasa, said, "In total 48 people died; they include 31 women, 11 children and six men."

“It is a very bad incident, 34 were hacked to death and we have 14 others who were burnt to death in their houses,” he added, “Our investigations have shown that it is the Pokomos who attacked the Orma people who live at an island.”

60 cows were also slashed to death by the attackers during the fierce fighting.

The two communities have been fighting over land, pasture and water during the past month, but Wednesday’s attack was the worst in their history.

Bahrain: Clashes at protester's funeral, 8 arrested
Protesters hurled petrol bombs and stones at police in clashes that broke out in Bahrain on Tuesday night at the funeral for a teenage demonstrator killed last week. The government said police arrested eight protesters. The opposition accused security forces of provoking the violence by firing tear gas.

The fighting broke out at the funeral of 16-year-old Hussam al-Haddad, who was killed on Friday by police gunfire. A government statement said, "A group of rioters bombarded police with Molotov cocktails and stones from the roof of a religious center. Another group attempted to block several roads, while still others began an illegal rally on a busy road," adding that eight people had been arrested.

Wefaq, the main opposition party, said riot police started the trouble by firing tear gas at the mourners. It said, "Many injuries were reported as the regime forces opened fire at mourners. As usual, the regime forces backed the militias who took part in attacking the mourners."

Opposition activists said Haddad was also beaten by plainclothes agents. The Interior Ministry said the death resulted from police reacting in self-defense to a petrol bomb attack on a patrol.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran's supreme leader orders fresh terror attacks on West
According to Western intelligence officials, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave the order to the elite Quds Force unit following a recent emergency meeting of Iran's National Security Council in Tehran held to discuss a specially-commissioned report into the implications for Iran of the Assad regime's overthrow.

Damascus is Iran's most important regional ally, and the survival of the Assad regime is regarded as vital to sustaining the Iranian-backed Hizbollah militia which controls southern Lebanon.

The report, which was personally commissioned by Mr Khamenei, concluded that Iran's national interests were being threatened by a combination of the U.N. sanctions imposed over Iran's nuclear programme and the West's continuing support for Syrian opposition groups attempting to overthrow the Syrian government.

Intelligence officials say the report concludes that Iran "cannot be passive" to the new threats posed to its national security, and warns that Western support for Syrian opposition groups was placing Iran's "resistance alliance" in jeopardy, and could seriously disrupt Iran's access to Hizbollah in Lebanon.

It advised that the Iranian regime should demonstrate to the West that there were "red lines" over what it would accept in Syria, and that a warning should be sent to "America, the Zionists, Britain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and others that they cannot act with impunity in Syria and elsewhere in the region."

Mr Khamenei responded by issuing a directive to Qassem Suleimani, the Quds Force commander, to intensify attacks against the West and its allies around the world.

The Quds Force has recently been implicated in a series of terror attacks against Western targets. Last year U.S. officials implicated the organisation in a failed assassination attempt against the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Washington. It was also implicated in three bomb attacks against Israeli diplomats in February, planning to attack the Eurovision song contest in Azerbaijan while two Iranians were arrested in Kenya last month for possessing explosives.

Intelligence officials believe the recent spate of Iranian attacks has been carried out by the Quds Force's Unit 400, which runs special overseas operations.

"Unit 400 seems to have been involved in all the recent Iranian terrorist operations," said a senior Western intelligence official. "The Iranian regime now seems determined to retaliate for what they regard as the West's attempts to influence the outcome of the Syrian unrest."

Iran has been actively supporting the Assad regime's attempts to suppress the wave of anti-government protests that erupted in March last year. Iranian opposition groups claim teams of experienced Revolutionary Guard officers have been flying to Damascus on specially-chartered Iranian aircraft on a weekly basis to advise the Assad regime.

The extent of Iran's support for the Assad regime was exposed earlier this month when 48 Iranians were captured and taken hostage by Syrian opposition fighters. The Iranians, who are said to include senior Revolutionary Guard officers, claimed they were conducting "reconnaissance missions", and their capture by Syrian opposition fighters was deeply embarrassing for Tehran, which is demanding their immediate safe return to Iran. Syrian rebels have threatened to kill the hostages unless Iran ends its support for the Assad regime.

Spokesman: Kato still in command of MILF splinter group
Moro terrorist rebel leader Ameril Umbra Kato might be ill but he is still in control of the group he had founded in 2010, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement, one of his aides said on Wednesday. BIFM spokesperson, Abu Misri Mama, said Kato remains at the helm of the splinter movement even though he suffered a stroke late last year.

Mama said, "Despite Kato’s health condition, he is still very much in command."

Kato, a former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commander in Maguindanao, was reportedly too weak to lead the BIFM and its armed branch, the Bangsamoro Freedom Fighters.

The MILF claimed he had sought treatment in a hospital in Cebu and the military had said a Kato deputy was now calling the shots in the BIFM.

The military’s assessment had come in the wake of attacks led by BIFF forces in at least five Maguindanao towns starting August 5, in which seven soldiers and five civilians were killed. The military claims scores of terrorists rebels were killed but terrorist rebel casualties could not be independently ascertained.

Mama accused the MILF of "circulating unverified statements" about Kato’s alleged treatment in Cebu, courtesy of an unnamed Maguindanao politician. Mama said, "If he was in Cebu for medical treatment, he could have already been arrested. This is nothing but a hoax," citing various warrants and a bounty of P10 million for his arrest.

But Colonel Prudencio Asto maintained that authorities had confirmed that "Kato is out" and that his deputy, Mohammad Ali Tambaco, "has taken over."

Unlike the MILF the military believes that Kato remains in Maguindanao and is being taken care of by his followers. Asto said the hunt was continuing for the ailing BIFM leader and his followers for the atrocities they have committed in Maguindanao.

Thai army chief warns of Cambodian Muslim threat
Some Cambodian Muslims have joined violent terrorist insurgent networks in southern Thailand, said army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha yesterday. Gen Prayuth has asked authorities to closely monitor Cambodian Muslim immigrants to ensure they return home when their one-month entry permits expire.

The army chief said that not all have returned to Cambodia. The army is asking the Immigration Bureau and the Customs Department about the whereabouts of Cambodian Muslims, he said.

Gen Prayuth said most Cambodian Muslims who entered Thailand are travelling through to neighbouring countries, particularly Malaysia, to find work.

He was responding to remarks made by Deputy Prime Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapa that one thousand Cambodian Muslims entered Thailand through border checkpoints in eastern provinces each month.

Gen Yutthasak is also concerned the Cambodians could be involved with the violence in the southern provinces. He said he had ordered the Immigration Bureau to check the numbers of Cambodian Muslims entering and leaving Thailand to monitor their movements.

Gen Prayuth said, "The main reason [they leave Cambodia] is poverty. They have no jobs in their homeland, so they must work elsewhere. Most of them do not aim to get involved in terrorism ... but they may give indirect financial support."

#1  in 2008, Obama and his campaign tried to put to rest doubts about his lack of executive and private sector experience by making the argument that Obama was the CEO of his campaign.

Lack of experience? Didn't matter since he was the smartest man alive. He was The One.

#2  So Obama, after mismanaging the economy for four years and thinking the “private sector is doing fine,” thinks he is leading the country out of the recession. He also thinks that if the country elects Romney to fix the economy and Romney turns the country around, Obama should get all the credit. This is a combination of delusion and narcissism that is patently on display.

Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad. And Champ is just about there.

FBI investigated congressional skinny dipping in Israel
h/t Gates of Vienna
The FBI launched an investigation after Republican congressmen on a fact-finding mission to the Holy Land took part in a late-night skinny-dip in the Sea of Galilee, it has emerged.

Several prominent politicians and their families joined in the after-dinner swim, prompting concerns among American law enforcement officials that compromising behaviour might have occurred.

Kevin Yoder, a Kansas Republican, admitted stripping off and jumping in alongside clothed colleagues such as Ben Quayle, the Arizona congressman and son of former vice-president Dan Quayle.

"I followed some Members of Congress in a spontaneous and very brief dive into the sea and regrettably I jumped into the water without a swimsuit," Mr Yoder told Politico, the political website, which disclosed details of the incident.

Satellite shows NORK reactor progress
North Korea has put a dome on a light-water reactor it is building, a key step towards completing a plant that could be used to support its nuclear weapons programme, a leading defence journal said.

Jane's Defence Weekly, examining images taken on August 6 by the GeoEye-1 satellite, said the dome, which had been lying on the ground at the Yongbyon complex, has now been put in place.

"North Korea has taken a major step in its mission to build a modern, indigenous nuclear reactor with a 21-metre diameter dome now having been emplaced over the reactor building," said image analyst Allison Puccioni.

"The emplacement of the dome is a significant development, although it may take several more years for the facility to be completed and brought into full operation."

#1  This initial mistake was made much worse by Obama’s failure to negotiate an accord to allow U.S. troops to remain in Iraq past 2011.

I will have to respectfully disagree with Boot's analysis. Permitting these miserable foks to determine their own fate is the solution, NOT a mistake. An 'alternative history' worth exploring might include a scenario that pits a nuclear armed Saddam against a nuclear armed Ahmadinejad.

Lastly, the endless mantra of blaming the United States for the ills of the middle east is very tiring.

We can't babysit these countries at this point. We don't have the money for it. We need to give our military (esp the ground troops) a rest (yes, get out of Afghanistan too).

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia Blames Count Doku for Suicide Strike
[An Nahar] A regional leader in Russia's restless North Caucasus on Tuesday accused a feared Islamist who has claimed some of Moscow's deadliest bombings of organizing a suicide strike that killed seven police.

"It is clear that the organizer of this terrorist attack is Doku Count Doku Umarov
... Self-styled first emir of the Caucasus Emirate. Count Doku has announced that his forces will not target civilians, but qualified that statement by saying there aren't any civilians in Russia...
," the state RIA Novosti news agency quoted Ingush President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov as saying.

A jacket wallah, identified by the authorities by his last name Aldiyev on Sunday, killed seven coppers as they arrived at a colleague's funeral over the weekend. Fifteen people were maimed in the blast.

Umarov, reported dead by the authorities on repeated occasions and viewed as the country's enemy number one, heads a cut-thoat movement that for years has been trying to impose an Islamist state throughout the mainly Mohammedan Caucasus.

His Caucasus Emirate group has claimed atrocities including a deadly Moscow airport bombing in 2011 and a metro attack in the capital in 2010.

Yevkurov also said that besides the suicide bomber and Umarov, the authorities had also identified the immediate organizer of the attack.

India-Pakistan
France decries blasphemy charge against Pakistani girl
There. That'll fix it.
[Dawn] La Belle France on Tuesday added its voice to mounting international concern over the arrest on blasphemy charges of a young Christian girl in Pakistain.

The girl, Rimsha, is reported to have Down's syndrome. She faces the death penalty for allegedly burning pages with verses from the Koran.

French foreign ministry front man Vincent Floreani said Gay Paree welcomed an announcement by Pak President Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
... husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in ...
that he would look into the case.

"La Belle France calls on the Pak authorities to free this young girl," he added.

"We would also recall that the very existence of a crime of blasphemy is in breach of fundamental liberties, the freedom of religion or of conviction as well as the freedom of speech.

"We call on Pakistain to respect its international commitments in this respect."Zardari has asked the interior ministry to submit a report on the case, the details of which remain unclear.

Reports in Pakistain have suggested the allegations against her were triggered after she burnt papers collected from a garbage pile for cooking.

A blighted generation
[Dawn] THE children of Pakistain face many odds. From malnutrition to exposure to various forms of violence to diseases as debilitating as polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
, the younger generation has to contend with a host of extraordinary challenges. For children living on the streets the risks are even greater, and including substance abuse and routine sexual violence. And as a recent report in this paper indicated, the threat of an HIV epidemic amongst street children is an emerging concern. According to health officials in Sindh, six out of 10 drug-using street children registered with a Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
-based NGO were found to be HIV-positive. This may reflect a bigger trend. The children had been using contaminated needles or were sexually abused. HIV is prevalent amongst injecting drug users and sex workers in the country. Because street children are exposed to drugs and sexual predators, this creates an extremely vulnerable sub-group likely to be infected with HIV. Meanwhile,
...back at the game, the Babe was wondering why the baseball kept getting bigger and bigger. Finally it hit him...
according to recent figures released by the NGO Madadgaar Helpline, over 2,300 children across Pakistain were subjected to different types of violence in the first half of this year. These included cases -- only those reported -- of rape, torture and murder.

As in other areas, after devolution it is the provinces' duty to pass laws concerning children's welfare. But barring a few exceptions, there has been a lack of intent and capacity at the provincial level to pass and implement laws to protect children. For example, Bloody Karachi, which observers estimate has a population of thousands of street children, does not have even a single state-operated rehabilitation home for the young ones. Only a few private concerns are making efforts in this regard. The fact is legislation is only a first step. What is needed most is compassion at the societal level for vulnerable children and the realisation that children have inviolable rights; rights that society denies them in a brutal fashion. Even the best laws are useless if not implemented. Until society reforms itself and the state moves beyond rhetoric and takes practical steps for the rehabilitation and welfare of children, we will only be bequeathing misery to the next generation.

Rebels Claim Control of Two-Thirds of Aleppo, Regime Denies
[An Nahar] Syria's rebels control almost two thirds of the northern city of Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
, a top Free Syrian Army commander said on Tuesday, in a claim denied by a security source in Damascus
...The capital of Iran's Syrian satrapy...
"We now control more than 60 percent of the city of Aleppo, and each day we take control of new districts," Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Okaidi told Agence La Belle France Presse by telephone.

"Every time we seize an area, the army responds with shelling," Okaidi said.

"This is completely false," the security source told AFP. "The forces of Evil are not advancing, it is the army that is making slow progress. Terrorist groups occasionally come out of districts under their control and attack other districts to be able to then claim they have this or that street under their control."

"After that, they quickly return to their lairs."

Syria's second city has been at the epicenter of the conflict since fighting erupted there almost a month ago, triggering a major army assault about a week later.

Okaidi, who is the FSA commander for the province of Aleppo, listed more than 30 districts that he said are under FSA control.

Among them were the southwestern neighborhoods of Saif al-Dawla, Bustan al-Qasr, Mashhad, Ansari and Fardoss, as well as Shaar, Hanano and Sakhour in the east, Bustan al-Basha in the northeast, Sheikh Saeed Fardoss in the south, and Kalasse near the city center.

About half of the embattled district of Salaheddin is in rebel hands, Okaidi said, adding that the FSA also holds the central neighborhood of Tilal.

Okaidi said Aleppo's residents are helping the FSA by giving them food and water.

"The people are with us," he said. "How else do you think we could have lasted a month?"

The move came after President Barack Obama

and top US military officers expressed growing concern over the so-called green-on-blue attacks in which uniformed Afghans turn their weapons against their NATO allies.

A total of 10 soldiers, mostly Americans, have bit the dust at the hands of their Afghan colleagues in the past two weeks, and the attacks have caused almost one in four coalition deaths in the war so far this month.

The police chief was sacked over the latest incident when a member of the Afghan national police opened fire on his foreign colleagues in the police headquarters of Spin Boldak district on Sunday, killing one and wounding another.

"The Spin Boldak district police commander has been fired for negligence in his duty and lack of control over his personnel," the chief of police for Kandahar province, General Abdul Razik, told AFP.

"If he had control on his police personnel the latest attack on NATO would not have taken place." he said.

The provincial government's media office, in a message on Twitter about the police chief's sacking, said green-on-blue attacks "will not be tolerated".

"We stand by our partners. The provincial administration of Kandahar is committed to working closely with its international counterparts and avoiding the attacks against them."

NATO and US officers have suggested the Afghan government has failed to come to grips with the problem and America's top military officer flew to Kabul for talks on the issue Monday with NATO commanders and Afghan top brass.

General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he came away "reassured" after discussions with his Afghan counterpart, General Shir Mohammad Karimi.

"I am reassured that the Afghan leaders, military and civilian, understand how important this moment is," Dempsey said before leaving Kabul on Tuesday.

The total corpse count from insider attacks this year has already reached 40, which makes up 13 per cent of all international coalition deaths for 2012.

Tripoli Meeting Accuses Syria of Stirring Unrest, Agrees on Truce
[An Nahar] The Islamic personalities of the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of thich is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
announced on Tuesday that an agreement had been reached with the residents of Bab al-Tabbaneh to implement an immediate ceasefire in the festivities that had been raging with the Jabal Mohsen neighborhood since Monday.

MP Mohammed Kabbara also condemned after the meeting the "army's random gunshots at some innocents."

The meeting, which was held at the MP's residence, accused the Syrian regime of being behind the unrest.

Kabbara said: "After it failed to implement the plan tasked to the terrorist former minister Michel Samaha, the regime sought to create strife between Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen in order to divert attention away from the crimes it is committing in Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
, Deir al-Zour, Homs, Daraa, and Damascus
...Capital of the last remaining Baathist regime in the world...
Three people have been killed and at least 33 were maimed in the Tripoli festivities that broke out over the developments in Syria.

The gatherers at Kabbara's residence called on the residents of the Jabal Mohsen "against getting dragged into the Syrian scheme that wants to exploit the blood of the sons of the city for the sake of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
They stressed that the residents of Bab al-Tabbaneh are aware of the plans being prepared against them and "they adamantly refuse to be dragged into this blatant scheme."

"They refuse to be the victims of this suspicious plan," they declared.

Regarding the army's role in handling the festivities, the gatherers asserted that it is "necessary for the army to target the gunnies and those creating strife."

"The army must arrest them and make them expose their backers," they noted.

They also condemned the random gunshots that were fired by some members of the army, demanding that they be held accountable for this action in order to prevent its repetition in the future.

The gatherers warned that they may be forced to resort to "escalatory measures" if this issue is not resolved.

Egypt: Conspiring Against Ruler Is Conspiring Against God - Salafi
H/T JihadWatch
Salafi (ultraconservative) leader and member of the constituent assembly, tasked with rewriting the constitution, Saeed Abdel Azeem, said that conspiring against Egypt's ruler (President Mohamed Mursi) is equal to conspiring against God.

Describing Egypt's president as the "ruling imam", Abdel Azeem argued that as Mursi may be unable to apply the law of God fully at this point, the nation must overcome political differences and rally behind him.

He added in his Eid speech on Sunday in Alexandria's Shohadaa Square that Egypt will return to being ruled by Islam and Prophet Mohamed's Sunnah and not democracy, socialism or nationalism.
"I hereby pronounce Bazargan as the Ruler, and since I have appointed him, he must be obeyed. The nation must obey him. This is not an ordinary government. It is a government based on the sharia. Opposing this government means opposing the sharia of Islam ... Revolt against God's government is a revolt against God. Revolt against God is blasphemy."

4 Dead in Tripoli Battles
[An Nahar] At least four people were killed and dozens others maimed, including an army officer and four troops, as festivities and sniper fire renewed on Tuesday in the rival Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of thich is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
districts of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh.

"The festivities are continuing," an army front man said in the early evening, while the military said in a statement that soldiers were "chasing gunnies and have seized a quantity of guns, bombs and ammunition."

Al-Jadeed television said the intensity of the festivities in the evening prevented medics from reaching a man who was maimed by sniper fire on al-Mankoubin Bridge.

MTV said "young man Imad Ahmed Ismail was killed after three sniper gunshots struck his chest in Bab al-Tabbaneh."

The National News Agency reported that "young woman Manal Sayyed was killed by a headshot as sniper fire targeted her residence in Bab al-Tabbaneh."

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, Zebulon finally found just the friend he'd been looking for...
al-Jadeed said the army called in armored reinforcements to the area of the festivities.

Earlier on Tuesday, a man identified as Zakaria Khodr al-Omar was killed in Bab al-Tabbaneh's al-Hamwi Street.

A security official told Agence La Belle France Presse that three people were killed in Jabal Mohsen, without identifying them.

The violence was centered around the aptly named Syria Street, the symbolic "dividing line" between the rival districts of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

Fires blazed in several buildings of the rival areas, where civilians evacuated their homes, an AFP correspondent said.

NNA said one of the blazes was sparked by shelling that targeted Jabal Mohsen's al-Saydeh area.

A number of RPGs hit al-Zahriyeh area, which is relatively outside the area of the festivities, wounding a man called Youssef Youssef.

The National News Agency said sniper fire was targeting Syria Street, al-Nasseri Mosque, Souk al-Qameh and Barrad al-Bissar, noting that the international highway linking Tripoli to Akkar was still cut off due to sniper fire.

The agency added that 17 maimed people were rushed to the Islamic Charitable Hospital in Tripoli and announced the death of Ahmed Hassan Mahmoud.

The gunbattles shattered the cautious calm that the residents enjoyed at dawn Tuesday, a day after the fighting, which involved the use of machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades, left one person dead.

Residents were trapped in their houses in the areas of Syria Street, al-Nasseri mosque, Rifa, al-Mankoubin and in Mallouleh near the highway that links Tripoli to the district of Akkar.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati warned "against sliding into the fires raging around Leb."

"But it's obvious that several parties in Leb are seeking to involve Leb in this conflict," he said in a statement issued by his press office.

Miqati urged residents of his hometown "not to be dragged into battles that only lead to death and devastation."

SNC Seeking Transitional Govt., Paris Mulling No-Fly Zone
[An Nahar] The Syrian National Council, Syria's main opposition group is studying the formation of a transitional government, its leader Abdel Basset Sayda said Tuesday.

"We are currently studying the formation of a transitional government," Sayda said after meeting French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, and a fine job he's doing of it...
in Gay Paree against a background of hints from the Syrian regime that Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Trampler of Homs...
could soon step down.

"It is a process that requires a lot of consultation. We mustn't go too fast but the Syrian National Council will attempt to get there as quickly as possible."

Asked about the possibility of forming a government in exile, Sayda said his priority was creating a government inside the country.

Speaking in Moscow earlier, Syria's Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil said Assad's resignation could not be a condition for negotiations with the opposition but added: "Any problems can be discussed during negotiations. We are even ready to discuss this issue."

Sayda also revealed that the French president was "seriously mulling" the possibility of establishing a no-fly zone in Syria with the aim of protecting civilians.

US drone strike kills five in North Waziristan
[Dawn] An unmanned American aircraft fired missiles at a vehicle in a Pak tribal area bordering Afghanistan Tuesday, killing five suspected Death Eaters and injuring two, Pak intelligence officials said.

The strike was part of a spike in American drone attacks, which have drawn official Pak criticism in the past. The spurt of drone action threatened to add tensions to relations between the two allies, just as they appeared to be improving.

The latest drone strike came near Shnakhura village in North Wazoo, two officials said. They said the area of the drone attacks is dominated by anti-US myrmidon commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief news hounds. Bahadur's group is known for frequent attacks on US troops in Afghanistan, but generally it does not carry out operations inside Pakistain.

Several recent drone strikes have killed Death Eaters affiliated with Bahadur's group. Tuesday's was the third drone attack in North Waziristan within three days. On Sunday, drone-fired missiles killed 10 suspected Death Eaters in two strikes 12 hours apart.

Egypt Urges Tribes to Help Boost Sinai Security
[An Nahar] The authorities in Egypt are urging tribal leaders to support a security campaign in the Sinai Peninsula where an attack on August 5 killed 16 border guards, media reports said on Tuesday.

The defense minister, General Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, asked tribal leaders who gathered on Monday in el-Arish in the north of the peninsula to "support the security forces and the campaign" in the area, government daily al-Ahram said.

Sissi gave them an assurance that the objective of the campaign was to "take full control of the situation in Sinai" and said that the army's role was to "support interior ministry forces."

He also said that the names of the perpetrators of the August 5 attack, attributed to Islamic bully boys, will be announced at the end of the inquiry into the incident.

Cairo has vowed to reassert its control over the Sinai, a sensitive region close to Israel and the Paleostinian Gazoo Strip where smugglers and forces of Evil thrive, after a host of security-related problems since the fall in February 2011 of President Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
Sources in Cairo have said that some of the gunnies involved in the August 5 attack had entered Sinai through a network of smuggling tunnels which run under the Gazoo border.

After killing the Egyptian guards the still unidentified attackers burst through a border crossing into Israel where they were killed by tank and helicopter fire.

Biden Not Secret Service Advance Team Spills the Beans on Plane Full of Republicans
I do not know whether to laugh or cry. Biden's communications flubs have now spread to his not so secret service entourage. So much for security whether on a plane full of Republicans or in Columbia with prostitutes in the same hotel the President stays. Or, if they spilled the beans on purpose, Biden may take it as an opportunity to up the rent on the little house they stay in to protect him from bad guys and/or himself.
Word of Biden's visit apparently leaked when Secret Service agents were overheard discussing the trip on a flight full of Republicans en route to Tampa.
Is it possible this happened accidentally on purpose?
An Obama campaign spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Biden's visit.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign confirms that Biden will stop in the Tampa area early next week as part of a two-day swing through Florida.

Deputy PM Says Syria 'Ready to Discuss' Assad Departure
[An Nahar] A top Syrian minister on Tuesday held out the prospect of strongman Bashir al-Assad stepping down as part of a negotiated settlement to 17 months of bloodshed that activists say has killed 23,000.

The comments from Syria's Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil came following talks with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and other Moscow officials who are keen to keep their sway over the Soviet-era ally in case of the fall of Assad.

Jamil rejected the idea of making Assad's resignation the condition for any future negotiations -- a demand made not only by the armed opposition but also Washington and several big European states.

But he said the president's departure could be a topic of discussion.

"As far as his resignation goes -- making the resignation itself a condition for holding dialogue means that you will never be able to reach this dialogue," said Jamil.

But the minister added in remarks translated into Russian: "Any problems can be discussed during negotiations. We are even ready to discuss this issue."

The United States announced on Monday that it would be promoting Assad's resignation during meetings with new U.N. peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi despite his initial refusal to back the idea.

Kofi Annan
...Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh and so far the worst Secretary-General of the UN. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for something or other that probably sounded good at the time. In December 2004, reports surfaced that Kofi's son Kojo received payments from the Swiss company Cotecna, which had won a lucrative contract under the UN Oil-for-Food Program. Kofi Annan called for an investigation to look into the allegations, which stirred up the expected cesspool but couldn't seem to come up with enough evidence to indict Kofi himself, or even Kojo...
's recent replacement had earlier this week said it was still too early for him to say whether pushing for Assad's ouster was the right strategy at this point in the conflict.

U.S. pressure on Syria escalated still further on Monday when President Barack Obama
The Cambridge police acted stupidly...
implicitly threatened to launch an attack should the Damascus
...Capital of the last overtly fascist regime in the world...
regime deploy a chemical weapons stockpile it acknowledged having only last month.

The U.S. leader said pointedly that he had not ordered military engagement against the Syrian regime "at this point".

But Assad's use of chemical weapons "would change my calculations significantly," said Obama.

Jamil waved off the threat as part of U.S. election politics rather than an actual declaration of intent.

"Obama's threats are simply propaganda linked to the U.S. elections," Jamil told news hounds.

Jamil was paying his second visit to Moscow in two weeks in a bid to put the fishing touches on a framework agreement for fuel supplies and other urgent Russian assistance and loans.

The country's top aid negotiator admitted that he had failed to secure a financial rescue promise on this occasion because the Russians preferred to talks about the fighting now raging on the ground.

"The issue of a Russian credit was discussed during my previous visit," Jamil confirmed in reference to his early August appearance in Moscow.

"This time, we focused more on political issues."

The comment appears to betray a growing impatience by Russia to achieve some sort of progress toward peace talks it has been backing in the face of escalating violence and little sign of concession from Assad.

Russia has adamantly defended Syria against the threat of foreign military invasion and still continues to formally supply Assad with heavy weapons under contracts it signed before the fighting broke out.

But its efforts to get new international talks going on Syria at the United Nations
...an organization whose definition of human rights is interesting, to say the least...
ended in fiasco earlier this month when most world powers pulled out.

Many of them called Russia's efforts futile because of the sides' vast diplomatic differences and the rapidly growing corpse count on the ground.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Moscow could adopt no other position.

"There should be no interference from the outside," Lavrov said after his talks with the Syrian minister.

"The only thing that foreign players should do is create conditions for the start of dialogue," Lavrov said.

#4  India is the largest customer of Israeli military equipment and Israel is the second-largest military partner of India after Russia.

India is Israel's largest defense market, accounting for almost fifty percent of Israeli sales. As of 2009, the military business between the two nations is worth around US$9 billion.

Also military and strategic ties between the two nations extend to joint military training and space technology.

It should not be too surprising if Israel and India were cooperating on nuclear weapons. I suspect it is likely that India's warships are there to receive, and maybe install and test, the military equipment Israel has been developing for them. Whether or not this includes nuclear weapons is very interesting speculation and probably a very worrying prospect for Iran.
Posted by: junkiron || 08/22/2012 8:23 Comments || Top||

#5  Does Israel need Indian nukes? Conventional wisdom is that they have their own despite never admitting this?

Obama believes in American decline, and just to make sure, he's making decline happen.

That is obvious and such a good reason to vote him out of office. In another day and age, he would be impeached for high crimes and treason.

Pros: Obama's historic appeasement has made a nuclear Iran inevitable.

Reminds one of Neville Chamberlain's appeasement foreign policy. It was naive, spineless, and led to WWII. His signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938 clinched it for WWII.

#9  Israel has also sold large ammounts of military equipment to Saudi Arabia.
Recent reports claim that Israeli military aircraft have been spotted on Saudi airfields.

Saudi officials have denied reports that Saudi Arabia would allow Isreal to use Saudi air space to attack Iran. But I think Iran would love an excuse to shut down Saudi oilfields. Which would also greatly benefit Russia.

In the event of an Israeli attack on Iran, the U.S would have no choice but to at least protect Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countrys in the region, which Iran has threatened to attack.

Multiple efforts underway to recover Shahbaz Taseer: Rehman Malik
[Dawn] Interior Minister Rehman Malik
Pak politician, Interior Minister under the Gilani government. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. By unhappy coincidence Nawaz Sharif became PM at just that moment and Malik moved to London one step ahead of the button men. He had to give up the interior ministry job because he held dual Brit citizenship.
on Tuesday said that he hoped that Shahbaz Taseer, son of slain Punjab governor Salman Taseer, would soon reunite with his family.

In a statement on the social networking website Twitter, the minister said that "multiple efforts" on the part of the government were underway which he said would result in a "positive" outcome.

Earlier in July, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah had said that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had been negotiating with bully boyz over Shahbaz's release.

That was the first official confirmation that the government was in talks with the men holding Shahbaz.

Sanaullah had said during a Geo News TV program that Shahbaz's kidnappers were demanding a large ransom and the release of some of their colleagues.

He had moreover said that the ISI had previously secured the release of the son-in-law of a former Mighty Pak Army general through similar negotiations.

Shahbaz Taseer was kidnapped from Lahore on Aug 26, 2011 in the morning near his company's head office.

Shahbaz Taseer's father Salman Taseer was killed by his bodyguard last year for criticising Pakistain's blasphemy laws.

German rabbi sued for performing circumcision
German authorities are looking into a lawsuit filed against Rabbi David Goldenberg of Hoff, Bavaria, for performing circumcision, the Jewish newspaper Jüdische Allgemeine reported.

According to the report, a doctor filed a complaint against Goldenberg following a Cologne court ruling that banned the Jewish and Moslem communities from performing the ancient religious ceremony, arguing that "non medical circumcision is a grave and irreversible intervention in the wellbeing of the human body."

Except that German doctors and hospitals aren't doing circumcisions any more for fear of being arrested, following the court case about the Moslem circumcision-gone-wrong in Cologne a few months ago. Germans have long had a distaste for it -- when I was pregnant in Germany in 1991, the hospital obstetrician told me he would only do the procedure if I held the baby myself, as his nurses thought it barbaric and refused to be involved. Pakistanis know how defend every inch of their motherland: PM
[Dawn] Rejecting the talk of despondency, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf Tuesday said Paks know how to defend every inch of their country and even can sacrifice their lives for this purpose.

"There is no need of any despondency. No nation is more brave, tolerant, courageous and struggling than Paks. Each one from the brave Pak nation knows how to defend every inch of their country and sacrifice their lives for this purpose," Ashraf said while addressing a large public meeting in his hometown.

The prime minister said, "no power in the world can frighten us, as we are brave people and know how to defend our soil and its integrity. This is also evident from the past."

He referred to the recent attack at Minhas airbase in Kamra and paid rich tribute to the country's soldiers for eliminating the attacking terrorists.

Pervez Ashraf said the government, people and the armed forces of Pakistain were fully cognizant of the defence of their motherland, adding, the people of Pakistain always stood united in any difficult hour.

The prime minister said all the problems and challenges faced by the country can be resolved only through democracy and democratic system, as democracy represents the will of masses.

"Democracy, democracy and more democracy provides solution of every problem. It is the cure of all wounds and ills. Democracy represents the will of Pak people," he remarked.

U.S. Skeptical of Syrian Overture on Assad Resignation

"We saw the reports of the presser that the deputy prime minister gave. Frankly, we didn't see anything terribly new there," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

"As far as his resignation goes -- making the resignation itself a condition for holding dialogue means that you will never be able to reach this dialogue," he said.

But Jamil added: "Any problems can be discussed during negotiations. We are even ready to discuss this issue."

The United States has said for the past several weeks that it wants to speed Assad's departure.

"The Syrian government knows what it needs to do, and the Russian government, as you know, joined us in Geneva in setting forth a very clear transition plan," Nuland said.

She added the Russians should encourage the Assad regime "to start now to be following through on a transition plan, but, you know, there's no need to complicate it, as the deputy prime minister appeared to do there."

"Obviously, the longer this goes on, the harder it is, but we still believe that the faster Assad goes, the more chance there is to quickly move on to the day after," she said.
