Man dies of COVID-19 30 days after his father
[Arutz 7] - Rabbi David Oberlander, one of the leading figures of the Belz Hasidic movement in Ashdod, died at the Ichilov Hospital from the coronavirus. He was only 38 years old.

...Rabbi Oberlander died exactly 30 days after his father, Rabbi Moshe Yosef Oberlander, also died from the coronavirus, and two weeks after the disease claimed the life of his uncle, Rabbi Yechiel Oberlander.

Typical "Government don't tell me what to do, I has my rights! I'm entitled to Government assistance when - in the course of excising my rights - I run into trouble!"

Here's why Michelle Obama appeared to snub Kamala Harris in DNC speech
h/t Instapundit
[NYP] - There was one glaring omission from Michelle Obama’s 20-minute Democratic National Convention speech Monday night — Kamala Harris.

That’s because the former first lady recorded her rousing speech before Joe Biden selected Sen. Harris of California as his running mate.

Allan Pan shows what happens when young engineers have free time and decide to test answers to all their nerdy ComicCon wonderings. Before the Rona he made flamethrower Kung Fu fists and tried shooting at Wonder Woman bracers to see where the bullets would go.

What he gleefully demonstrated was that this is not an effective solution, even if it were not assault.

#13  Starting to wonder if the masks are going to make this worse. Consider that all coronaviruses are notorious for creating a short lived immune response. Something between 3 and 12 months. If that's true, and if the masks actually reduce R-naught (both big "ifs") then there could be a sweet spot where the masks make this thing perpetual. In other words, they slow the infection down to the point where it doesn't burn out before people who already had it start to lose immunity. Fun, right?

#21  I'd look at poor diet, lack of pre-natal care, and overall health first.

My first thought; along the theory that vegetarians and especially vegans have underdeveloped infants. Children born addicted to drugs is a real thing.

The researchers analyzed records on 1.8 million hospital births in Florida between 1992 and 2015.

Oooook...Which Florida?

At baseline, 1,090 out of every 100,000 black babies born died within the first 28 days of life.

That was more than twice the death rate among white babies: 490 per 100,000.

The team attributed this shocking disparity to higher rates of eclampsia and preeclampsia (potentially dangerous high blood sugar during pregnancy) among the mothers while they were pregnant, higher rates of preterm delivery, economic disadvantage and racial bias.

Brilliant Trump Puts Himself On All Postage Stamps, Forcing Democrats To Push For Abolishing USPS
[Babylon Bee] WASHINGTON, D.C.—Sources are reporting that Trump has dealt a killer blow in his ongoing war against his sworn enemy, the U.S. Post Office. In a move of sheer, mind-blowing brilliance, Trump directed the Post Office to put his face on every single stamp, forcing the Democrats to reverse course and abolish the institution once and for all.

The new stamp, dubbed "The Trump-Stamp," to be used on all pieces of mail features a smiling Donald Trump, with the caption "GREATEST PRESIDENT EVER."

Don Lemon broke the news in a tearful address to the nation last night. "Our democracy is over," he said. "It doesn't exist anymore. I will never send another piece of mail ever again, and neither should you or else you're a racist."

Antifa and BLM responded by marching on local post offices and burning them down. Enthusiastic Trump supporters quickly bought up all the stamps. They are now selling for $3,000 apiece online.

Covid-19 Is Creating a Wave of Heart Disease
h/t Hot Air
By Haider Warraich
Dr. Warraich is a cardiologist.

[NYT] - ...Eduardo Rodriguez was poised to start as the No. 1 pitcher for the Boston Red Sox this season. But in July the 27-year-old tested positive for Covid-19. Feeling "100 years old," he told reporters: "I’ve never been that sick in my life, and I don’t want to get that sick again." His symptoms abated, but a few weeks later he felt so tired after throwing about 20 pitches during practice that his team told him to stop and rest.

Further investigation revealed that he had a condition many are still struggling to understand: Covid-19-associated myocarditis. Mr. Rodriguez won’t be playing baseball this season.

Myocarditis means inflammation of the heart muscle. Some patients are never bothered by it, but for others it can have serious implications. And Mr. Rodriguez isn’t the only athlete to suffer from it: Multiple college football players have possibly developed myocarditis from Covid-19, putting the entire college football landscape in jeopardy.

I recently treated one Covid-19 patient in his early 50s. He had been in perfect shape with no history of serious illness. When the fevers and body aches started, he locked himself in his room. But instead of getting better, his condition deteriorated and he eventually accumulated gallons of fluid in his legs. When he came to the hospital unable to catch a breath, it wasn’t his lungs that had pushed him to the brink — it was his heart. Now we are evaluating him to see if he needs a heart transplant.

An intriguing new study from Germany offers a glimpse into how SARS-CoV-2 affects the heart. Researchers studied 100 individuals, with a median age of just 49, who had recovered from Covid-19. Most were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.

An average of two months after they received the diagnosis, the researchers performed M.R.I. scans of their hearts and made some alarming discoveries: Nearly 80 percent had persistent abnormalities and 60 percent had evidence of myocarditis. The degree of myocarditis was not explained by the severity of the initial illness.

#1  Web MD - Viral infection is the most common cause of myocarditis.

#3  That's what I think the virus was intended to do. Low mortality - to avoid panic & lockdowns. Infects most of the population with mild symptoms, and a few months later - bingo.
By the way, the effects of Covid 19 on hearts and brains were only discovered because of all the attention. In the scenario described above, it would've taken years. And be old news.
That is, in this view, the high mortality is an unintended product of the way they produced the virus (growing bat viruses on human tissue cultures) and before they could tone it down, the virus escaped.
That's raises an interesting question. We know "herd immunity" approach originated with China - who made it WHO's official position, and it spread from where*. So the question is - are "herd immunists" paid Chinese agents or simply idiots?

*It was the official position of most state epidemiologists (including Fauci - look it up) in the beginning. Fortunately, dropped when the corpses started pilling up.

Fox News Hosts Laud Michelle Obama's DNC Speech: ‘Sliced And Diced' Trump
[HuffPoo] A Fox News panel had high praise to offer after former first lady Michelle Obama’s address at the Democratic National Convention Monday night.

In her nearly 19-minute speech, Obama denounced President Donald Trump for creating chaos and division and failing to lead with empathy and competence. She also urged Americans to bring his presidency to an end and elect former Vice President Joe Biden.

Many right-wing figures, including some Fox News contributors, criticized the address online. Fox News chose not to air much of the first portion of the convention, opting instead to show Sean Hannity interviewing Donald Trump Jr. Nonetheless, the conservative network’s panel for the convention was apparently impressed by Obama’s speech.

"It’s very difficult to try to connect with an audience without an actual audience there with you but she has the ability to connect with people through the screen," Fox News anchor Dana Perino said. "You got the sense when you talk about authenticity, she has it in spades."

New York Times Manipulates FBI Lawyer's Guilty Plea To Hide Real Spygate News
Mollie Hemingway - excellent as usual
[Federalist] A New York Times reporter who won a Pulitzer Prize for his role perpetrating the Russia collusion hoax was tasked with framing the news that a former top FBI lawyer was to plead guilty to deliberately fabricating evidence against a Donald Trump campaign affiliate targeted in the Russia probe. The resulting article is a case study in how to write propaganda.

Adam Goldman broke, and cushioned, the news that former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith was to plead guilty to fabricating evidence in a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant application to spy on Trump campaign affiliate Carter Page.

His job was to present the news as something other than an indictment of the FBI’s handling of the Russia collusion hoax, to signal to other media that they should move on from the story as quickly as possible, and to hide his own newspaper’s multi-year participation in the Russia collusion hoax. One intelligence source described it as an “insult” to his intelligence and “beyond Pravda,” a reference to the official newspaper of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union. Here’s how Goldman did it.

Anthony Weiner spotted at Hamptons children's park with his son
[New York Post] It’s hardly shocking to see a boldfaced name out East during the summer. But one sighting took a spy by surprise.

"Strange but true. Just saw Carlos Danger Anthony Weiner at a children’s park in Sag Harbor with his kid," said a source. "I noticed him before he put his mask on," they added.

Of course, Weiner is a registered sex offender, having done time for sending explicit pictures to a 15-year-old in 2016.

Page Six reported earlier this year that parents at his son’s downtown school were up in arms because Weiner was lobbying to be allowed onto the school grounds. He had previously been allowed only as far as the school gates.

Weiner declined to comment.

John Kasich - Hey, look at me, me, me. Orange Man Baaad !
[RedState] In a delivery already as bland as a 2nd-grade talent show, John Kasich was even more unremarkable.

It was some good comedy when it was announced last week that the Democrats had invited former Ohio Governor John Kasich to speak at their convention. Not only was he likely to generate the exact same unmeasurable amount of influence on GOP voters, but he was also slated to have more speaking time than the party darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. And Alex From the Bronx was clearly in a snit over this.

She has been sniping about Kasich for the better part of the week, and today he returned fire, leading to an epic confrontation on par with two goldfish having a territorial dispute in the bowl. Finally, tonight, we got to see the majestic discourse from the postal progeny, and it was bad enough to Return to Sender.

John’s message was centered on a concept that is not only unoriginal, but a well-worn path. ’’America is at a crossroads.’’ Then to deliver this message with the deft touch only the ham-fisted can — to illustrate this he was literally standing at a crossroad.

[Jpost] Ambassador Erdan files formal complaint with Security Council over July 27 incident, in which IDF says members of the Lebanese terror group entered Israeli territory.
Keeping Hezbollah on the back foot? Israel can’t seriously expect the UN will take meaningful action, despite the evidence.
Israel filed a formal complaint with the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
Security Council on Monday over an incident along the Lebanese border last month, in which the Israeli military says it foiled an attack by the Hezbollah terror group.
Carry on foiling, Israel, while the UN continues blithely doing nothing.
In the complaint, Israel’s new ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, said the Hezbollah cell was armed with a .50-caliber sniper rifle, which was recovered at the scene, along with military fatigues.

Devin Nunes 'shocked - shocked' that presiding FISA court judge assigned to ex-FBI lawyer's case
[Washington Examiner] A top House Republican said he was "shocked" when he saw the name of the judge before whom former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith is expected to plead guilty in the first criminal case arising out of U.S. Attorney John Durham's inquiry into the Russia investigation.

Rep. Devin Nunes, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, told Fox Business host Lou Dobbs on Monday he has no idea how Judge James Boasberg, the presiding judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, ended up being in charge of a case related to the FISA surveillance of a former Trump campaign aide.

"I saw that today. I was a little bit shocked," the California Republican said. This was after Dobbs, a staunch ally of President Trump and stern critic of the Russia investigation, asked if it was "a little bit screwed up."

The FISA court, which oversees requests for surveillance warrants for federal law enforcement and intelligence purposes, is currently composed of 11 judges. Boasberg, who is a judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, has served in the FISA court since 2014. He was named the presiding judge of the FISA court on Jan. 1.

Hillary Clinton emails
On August 22, 2016, Boasberg ordered the release of over 14,000 emails found in the United States Department of State correspondence of Hillary Clinton by the FBI during an investigation of Clinton's private server.[20] These emails were requested by Judicial Watch, a conservative legal group, because the FBI has indicated that emails were work-related and not entirely private as Clinton had previously said.[20]

Trump tax returns
On August 18, 2017, Boasberg dismissed a lawsuit from the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), which had sued the IRS under FOIA seeking President Donald Trump's personal tax returns from 2010 to the present to be released. Boasberg concluded that because personal tax returns are confidential, they may only be obtained either by permission from Trump himself or if Congress's Joint Committee on Taxation signed off to allow the disclosure.[21

White House trade guy Peter Navarro: China ‘Hoping Joe Biden Will Get Elected
[Breitbart] Monday on CNBC’s "Squawk Box," White House trade and manufacturing adviser Peter Navarro shared the belief held among those in the Trump administration that China is "biding their time" in trade negotiations and "waiting for the election hoping Joe Biden will get elected."

In the interview, Navarro warned that the Chinese Communist Party is "waging information warfare against" the United States in attempt to "manipulate" the upcoming 2020 presidential election with "pro-Biden messages" on the internet.

"I think in terms of productive conversation we had today, we have China. They came to the table. They signed a phase 1 deal. They’re abiding by the deal. At the same time, they’re clearly biding their time now, waiting for the election hoping Joe Biden will get elected," Navarro cautioned. "And by the way, I don’t know if you’ve heard of the Wu Mao Army, but one of the things that’s going on is the Chinese Communist Party is waging information warfare against us, trying to manipulate our election. The Wu Mao Army is this vast army of millions of Chinese that basically get paid to troll our internet and push anti-Trump messages, pro-Biden messages."

"I looked at what’s going on here with our democracy, and it’s the scariest I’ve ever seen it’s because as beneficial as the social media is, it’s also become a tool for people like the Chinese Communist Party to influence what’s going on here. So, as the president loves to say, let’s see what happens in November, but in the meantime, we have to be on guard," he concluded.

Israel releases prominent Palestinian BDS activist
[IsraelTimes] Israel on Monday released a West Bank leader of the global campaign to boycott the Jewish state, following his arrest last month by Israel’s internal security agency.

Mahmoud Nawajaa, coordinator of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in the West Bank and Gazoo

, was arrested at his home in Ramallah on July 30.

Several rights groups, including Amnesia Amnesty International, campaigned for his release, including through rallies in Ramallah and Gaza this month.

Israeli military tribunals exercise jurisdiction over Paleostinians in the West Bank.

A Shin Bet spokesperson told AFP that Nawajaa had been "arrested and questioned on security matters... and released at the end of the investigation."

The BDS movement calls for a wide-ranging embargo of Israel over its treatment of the Paleostinians. Israel sees BDS as a strategic threat and accuses it of anti-Semitism.

A law passed in 2017 allows Israel to ban foreigners with links to BDS.

Last year, Israel expelled the country director of Human Rights Watch, Omar Shakir, after accusing him of supporting BDS, a claim he denied.

Israeli sources had previously told AFP that Nawajaa’s arrest was not linked to his role with the BDS movement.

Strip into Israeli territory throughout the day.

Israeli aircraft carried out Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s on targets in the Gaza Strip in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday morning, hitting Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, targets and infrastructure.

The strikes landed near the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, according to Paleostinian reports.

"IDF fighter jets and aircraft attacked an underground infrastructure belonging to the Hamas terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip," the IDF's Spokesperson's Unit said in a statement.

The military added that the attack was carried out in response to incendiary balloons sent from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory throughout the day, in addition to consequent fires in which a children's preschool and some 150 of hectares of agricultural land were burned.

An incendiary balloon landed in front of a Sderot preschool on Monday, starting a fire in the region. While some 35 children attend the preschool on a daily basis, the building suffered structural damage, but was fortunately empty at the time and no injuries were reported, according to Maariv, The Jerusalem Post's sister publication.

Moreover, the airstrikes took place only hours after an Egyptian envoy left the Strip in an attempt to mediate in order to prevent escalation between Hamas and Israel, as well as after the Gazook balloon units threatened on Monday night to "burn everything in the Gaza envelope" on Tuesday.

Israel has launched several attacks on targets in the Hamas-controlled coastal enclave over the past week due to increasing launches of incendiary balloons from the Strip into the South, as well as rocket attacks.

On Sunday, five Israelis were maimed when Hamas fired at rockets towards southern Israel. Interceptor rocket fragments slammed into the yard of a home in Sderot, damaging the home and injuring a 58-year-old man, the IDF said in a statement at the time. Two other women were treated for shock, while another two hurt themselves while running to the bomb shelter.

11 Yemen soldiers killed in clashes and rebel attack
[AlAhram] Eleven Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
i government troops, including a senior officer, were killed in a rebel missile attack and festivities to the northeast and east of Sanaa, military and medical sources said Monday.

General Mohammed Ali-Roqn, commander of the army's 122 brigade, along with eight other soldiers were killed in battle in al-Jawf province Sunday while trying to reclaim positions lost months ago, the sources said.

The rebels also suffered casualties, the military source added without elaborating.

Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
rebels took control of the capital of the northern province of al-Jawf earlier this year -- a strategic advance that means they now threaten oil-producing Marib province.

Yemen's vice president, Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, in a statement carried by the official Saba news agency, said Roqn was killed "while conducting military operations" in al-Jawf.
May he quickly find himself precisely where he belongs, as opposed to where he fondly believed himself headed.
Two government troops were killed and four others maimed in a Houthi missile attack on a military base in Marib, east of Sanaa, a government official said.

Renewed festivities also broke out in al-Baida -- which is under nominal government control -- between loyalist forces and the Houthis, who have launched offensives against al-Qaeda snuffies in the province.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
-- considered by the United States as the radical group's most dangerous branch -- has carried out operations against both the Houthis and government forces..

The government and rebels have been locked in a five-year-old war that has killed tens of thousands -- triggering what the UN terms the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Fighting has carried on despite repeated calls for a ceasefire as part of global efforts to combat coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
, which health agencies fear could become a disastrous outbreak in impoverished Yemen.

More than 1,800 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Yemen, including 530 deaths.

de Blasio announces plans to return most vulnerable to shelters
That’s nice. Will he comp the hotels for their clean-up and redecorating costs?
[NYDAILYNEWS] The city will eventually move homeless people out of hotels and back into shelters, Mayor de Blasio said Monday, though he declined to provide a timeline.

The promise came amid growing concerns of aggressive panhandling, public urination and other quality-of-life infringements blamed on homeless people housed in hotels in Hell’s Kitchen and nearby nabes.

"As the ... health situation continues to improve, we’re going to start the process of figuring out where we can get homeless individuals back into safe shelter facilities and reduce the reliance on hotels," de Blasio said at a presser.

In the spring, the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) began moving about 10,000 homeless people into hotels from shelters, where fear of coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
spread remains high.

Since then, residents of Hell’s Kitchen, where homeless people are living in eight hotels, and other areas have complained of close encounters with enraged or apparently drug-addled individuals.

Hizzoner insisted the city has the situation under control.

"On the specific quality-of-life issues, it’s incumbent upon every city agency involved to get out there and solve them," he said, mentioning the NYPD, DHS, and the Health and Sanitation departments.

"I’ve instructed all of them to address these issues as they come up and make sure that neighborhood residents see that these concerns are being addressed," he added.

De Blasio said for the city to get homeless people out of hotels, it has to "identify space that will work in our existing shelters.

"We’ll have more to say on that as the plans are more deeply developed and as we see what the health situation shows us," he added.

UN-backed court to issue verdicts in Lebanon's Hariri case
[EN.ANNAHAR] More than 15 years after the truck bomb liquidation of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in Beirut, a U.N.-backed tribunal in the Netherlands is announcing verdicts this week in the trial of four members of the krazed killer group Hezbollah allegedly involved in the killing, which deeply divided the tiny country. The verdicts on Tuesday at the Special Tribunal for Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
, based in a village on the outskirts of the Dutch city of The Hague, are expected to further add to soaring tensions in Lebanon, two weeks after a catastrophic explosion at Beirut’s port that killed nearly 180 people, injured more than 6,000 and destroyed thousands of homes in the Lebanese capital.

Unlike the blast that killed Hariri and 21 others on Feb. 14, 2005, the Aug. 4 explosion was believed to be a result of nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate that accidentally ignited at Beirut’s port. While the cause of the fire that provided the trigger is still not clear, Hezbollah, which maintains huge influence over Lebanese politics, is being sucked into the public fury directed at the country’s ruling politicians.

Even before the devastating Beirut port blast, the country’s leaders were concerned about violence after the verdicts. Hariri was Lebanon’s most prominent Sunni politician at the time, while the Iran-backed Hezbollah is a Shiite Moslem group.

US-led coalition clashes with Syrian regime at Qamishli checkpoint
[Rudaw] The US-led coalition denied carrying out an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
against Syrian regime soldiers in Qamishli on Monday, saying troops engaged in "self-defence" after coming under fire near a regime checkpoint, according to an official statement.

According to the statement, coalition troops and members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were conducting a "routine" security patrol near Tal Az-Zahab, southeast of Qamishli in Hasaka province, when passed a pro-Syrian regime checkpoint.

"After receiving safe passage from the pro-regime forces, the patrol came under small arms fire from individuals in the vicinity of the checkpoint. Coalition troops returned fire in self-defence. The Coalition did not conduct an airstrike," the statement read.

No coalition members were maimed or killed, it added.

The statement followed reports from Syrian state media of an "airstrike" by coalition helicopters, killing at least one Syrian regime soldier and wounding two others.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported the strikes taking place after regime forces refused to let the US patrol pass, putting the regime soldier corpse count at two.

"Reliable SOHR sources have confirmed that regime checkpoint blocked a US military column in Tal al-Zahab village, south of al-Qamishli airbase in al-Hasakah countryside, which evolved to altercation between both sides," reported the SOHR Monday afternoon.

"Aircraft affiliated to the International Coalition came later and struck the checkpoint, leaving many casualties among regime soldiers stationed at the checkpoint," it added.

A video posted to Twitter on Monday afternoon purportedly shows US force fire at a Syrian army outpost.

This is the first direct military engagement between the United States and Syrian regime in recent months.

A unit from the Syrian army confronted a US military convoy in a village associated with the town of Tal Tamr in Hasaka province in July.

The US said it had "completely withdrawn" from northeastern Syria in late 2019, according to statements made by US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper. However around 600 soldiers remain across parts of the country to protect oil fields from the Islamic State

The withdrawal of US troops in early October prompted international outcry as Ottoman Turkish-backed forces invaded the areas held by the SDF since the defeat of ISIS.

It aimed to cleanse the area of SDF, which it sees as a terrorist group, before resettling Arab refugees from elsewhere in Syria that have fled to Turkey since 2011.

Ex-CIA agent arrested, charged with spying for China for years
[AmericanMilitaryNews] A former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer was arrested and faces charges he spied for China for years.

Alexander Yuk Ching Ma, 67, a 15-year agent of the CIA, was charged Monday for selling U.S. secrets to China, NBC reported. Ma reportedly disclosed a substantial amount of highly classified national defense information" to five members of the Chinese Ministry of State Security, including the identities of CIA officers and human assets, information about the CIA’s internal organization and means of CIA communications.

Ma worked for the CIA from 1967 to 1989 and was assigned to work overseas in the East-Asia and Pacific region during part of his CIA tenure. The meeting between Ma and the Chinese officers reportedly happened about 12 years after his retirement from the agency, around some time in 2001. According to the charging documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times, Ma kept in touch with his Chinese contacts as he applied for an FBI position in 2004. Over the next six years, Ma allegedly downloaded, collected or otherwise photographed sensitive information to pass along to China until he stopped work for the FBI in 2010.

Ma was reportedly caught after the FBI began a sting operation in January of 2019. The FBI had reportedly held suspicions about Ma for years but it is not clear as to why the FBI waited as long as it had to investigate Ma.
President Trump doesn’t like spies and traitors, whether serving the Deep State or a foreign state, and does not exempt Communist China.
As part of the sting operation, an FBI agent pretended to be a Chinese government auditor reviewing the Chinese governments handling of Ma as an intelligence source. The FBI agent reportedly showed Ma a video of his 2001 meeting with the Chinese officials to gain Ma's trust. It was not immediately clear how the FBI obtained the footage.

After playing the footage, the FBI agent gained Ma's trust and got him to admit in further meetings that he worked for the Chinese.
Meaning, he had been 'flipped' by the Chinese and at some point had become a double agent.
According to the charging documents, Ma told the agent he "wanted ‘the motherland' to succeed" and said he would consider working again for the Chinese government, "perhaps as a consultant."

Ma is charged with conspiring to communicate national defense information to aid a foreign government and, if convicted, faces up to a life term in prison.

Ma is not the only former CIA agent to face charges of spying for China. In May of 2019, Jerry Chun Shing Lee, 54, a former CIA case officer and U.S. Army veteran admitted to spying for China. Lee reportedly devised a document on his computer on May 26, 2010, that detailed specific locations where CIA officers were, as well as the precise location and time frame of a sensitive CIA operation, which was all secret level classified information. He then transferred the sensitive information to a thumb drive, he used to transfer the information.

The New York Times reported in November that Lee was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
So it seems reasonable that Mr. Ma should get the same.

Jacinda Ardern's Covid autocracy
[Spiked] New Zealand has delayed its election, even though just five people are in hospital with Covid.

With New Zealand overwhelmed by a terrifying 78 cases of Covid-19, prime minister Jacinda Ardern has taken the emergency decision to postpone the general election by a month.

New Zealand’s hospitals are presumably struggling to cope with their staggering total of five Covid-19 patients. The prospect of voters going to the polls and spreading their democratic germs, therefore, does not bear thinking about.

This is the latest authoritarian pandemic overreaction by Ardern’s government, which recently put Auckland back into lockdown. That decision was made because four new cases of Covid-19 were discovered in the city. It has a total of just 19 active cases, and, throughout the pandemic, not a single person has died from the virus there.

’Covid Zero’ is not a reasonable requirement for a reopening of society. With uncertainty about when and even if a vaccine will be produced, such an approach could lead to perpetual restrictions.

But it is also striking how little reaction the news of the election delay has received, especially considering the outrage when Donald Trump suggested doing the same thing in the USA, a country far worse-hit by the virus than New Zealand.

Accusations of an autocratic takeover were aired in response to Trump’s idea. One senator called it a ’serious, chilling attack on the democratic process’, and many Trump critics agreed. How can the difference in the reaction to Ardern’s decision be so stark?

It’s simple: Ardern is a poster girl both for liberals and for keen enthusiasts of authoritarian Covid-19 measures. Apparently this means she should be immune from criticism.

Born of internal Arab despair, UAE deal gives Israel genuine chance of peace
The rest of this opinion piece, is, I think, farther left than I am willing to go, the author clearly unaware that the anti-Bibi movement is not a grassroots uprising but the weaponization of Israel’s branch of Antifa by Israel’s Deep State, payrolled by American Progressives, but the first bit is useful background to current events in the region.
[IsraelTimes] Last November, three dozen public figures from around the Arab world gathered in London to launch the Arab Council for Regional Integration — meaning, the integration of Israel into the Middle East. It was the first time in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict that a pan-Arab group had formed for the sole purpose of ending the Arab boycott of Israel. The group included a Lebanese Shiite holy man, a Saudi publisher, a member of the Egyptian parliament.

For all the fear of an imperialist Iran, what really motivated them to take the great personal risk of publicly calling for normalization was the Arab world’s existential crisis. The collapse of the Arab spring, the self-devouring of Syria, the destruction of Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
and Libya and Iraq — all convinced Council members that the Arab world’s decades-long obsession with Israel was poisoning their own societies with hatred and a conspiracy mindset, undermining their ability to deal with chronic problems. Ending its war against Israel, Council members said, was a prerequisite for the Arab world’s ability to heal itself.

CNN’s report comes after U.S. intelligence reports leaked accusing Russia of paying bounties to Taliban-backed fighters for attacks against U.S. soldiers.

Saeed Khatibzadeh, a spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, also blamed Washington for the ongoing situation in Afghanistan, calling it an outcome of the warmongering and interventions of Washington.

He said Pompeo’s allegations are considered as blamegame and attempts to deflect public opinion in Afghanistan with regard to US aid to ISIS, according to IRNA News Agency.

Furthermore, Khatibzadeh said US has not yet give response to public opinion’s demands regarding the identity of helicopters flying in Afghan airspace and under NATO

Pompeo on Wednesday said Tehran continues to arm the Taliban group today.

Responding to a question regarding Russia and Tehran’s intervention in Afghanistan, Pompeo said "We’ve made clear we know the history, we know that the Russians have armed the Taliban in the past, right. We know that the Iranians continue to arm them today. So we know these facts."

"We’ve made clear to each of them our expectations, and we will do everything we need to do to protect and defend every American soldier and, for that matter, every soldier from the Czech Republic or any other country that’s part of the Resolute Support Mission to make sure that they’re safe," he said, adding that "We have done that. We did it last year, we’ll do it again this year, and we’ll do it so long as we have soldiers in Afghanistan."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Middle East consolidates against Iran, despite Obama's Legacy
Surely, someone will beat me to this punch.
[Washington Examiner] President Trump's joint announcement with the UAE and Israel was landmark enough on its own. The normalization marks the first between Israel and another Middle Eastern nation since President Bill Clinton helped broker the peace deal between Israel and Jordan in 1994. A single new formalization is a big deal that it is, and for other nations to join, especially as Iran grows unusually embattled, would constitute a monumental realignment of the axis of power in the Gulf.

And, of course, it would undercut the entire thesis of the de facto Obama Doctrine that assumed peace in the Middle East was contingent of empowering Iran and cowering to the Hamas and Hezbollah.

The Obama Doctrine has been disproven, and Trump's approach to the Middle East is clearly focused in the right direction. The real political question to come: Will the Israel-friendly Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris cut their losses and follow Trump or go down with the ship to preserve Obama's crumbling legacy?
Since neither of them would be in charge of foreign policy were they to win in November, the question of how much the Deep State hates President Trump and seeks to undo all his works contains all the answer we need.

Why do writers talk as if Biden / Harris has a non-single digit chance to become Prez and VP? Their campaign is about to become the first with little to no campaigning; Trump hit the road and Joe's gonna hide in his basement as long as possible. Last week had three consecutive days of Biden mumbling and drooling in front of the press corps, only to be whisked away every time when someone asked him a question. Last week also had him announce as uninspiring a VP pick in recent memory - an opportunistic slut who openly admitted she'll say anything that the moment requires and was polling at 0% and won zero delegates when she was the first broad to exit the Dem Prez race. They will do everything in their power to prevent Biden and Trump from debating.

Seattle police officer tells BLM protester, 'I'm leaving, you guys won'; 18 rioters arrested overnight
[LAWOFFICER] In a sad scene of resignation a Seattle police officer told a person believed to be a BLM protester that he planned to resign due to the civil unrest and riots.

A video circulating on social media (see below) shows the unnamed officer drive up to a protester and have a short conversation.

"You having a good day today?" says the officer through his passenger side window, which is rolled down.

"Not really, you’re around," replied the protester.

"I’m sorry for that. But just don’t worry man, cuz guess what? I’m leaving. You guys won," the officer says. "F***ing two months baby, I’m out."

"You’re about to resign?" queries the hopeful protester with a touch of excitement in his voice.

"I’m f***ing gone, bro," declared the officer.

"How you felling about that?" the protester asks, almost empathetically.

"I’m feeling great," says the officer. "I’m leaving this department. You guys won."

The conversation continues with the protester chumming up to the officer, even asking him to be interviewed (like he was going to join forces with them).

When the protester realizes the officer is not resigning due to "police brutality," but because of the onslaught occurring against officers, he suddenly turns against his "new friend."

Apparently shouting to other demonstrators, the protester says, "Hey, he said he’s tired of us. He’s gonna resign because of Black Lives Matter, not because he’s tired of the police."

Now, returning to his caustic demeanor, the protester says, "Hey, you triggered boy? You triggered? Oink, oink, ... oink, oink. F*** you and your blue life, boy."

The insulting activist then repeats the inflammatory comments a second time when the officer appears to say something about being friends. The angered protester responds, "Nah, we ain’t never gonna be friends. We’ll never see eye to eye. I don’t give a f*** if you take that badge off, you’ll never be my people."

#4  ...When I was in the ROK in the early 80s, dogs were to a surprising extent considered just as much livestock as pets (see also kagogi) but the government made a full-court press prior to the '88 Olympics to get it stopped. They did pretty good in the cities, but out in the country and smaller cities it's still common.

The point here though is this - up north, they never stopped using dogmeat, and if it's to the point where pets are now being confiscated (and keep in mind that in a society where food is often scarce at best, the pets likely belonged to upper middle or upper class Norks because they were the only ones who could afford the luxury of feeding them) then it's bad. Really, really bad.

Strangle COVID with an Inhaler?
[Fierce Biotech] Just weeks after ExeVir Bio was spun out of a Belgian research institute to develop a llama-inspired antibody treatment for COVID-19, a rival effort has sprung up at the University of California, San Francisco. Now, the UCSF team is reporting promising preclinical results for its aerosol formulation—and suggesting it could be used as a self-administered form of protection against the virus.

Llamas and other camelids fight off pathogens like viruses with tiny antibodies called single-domain antibodies or "nanobodies." The UCSF team used protein engineering to make a synthetic nanobody that prevents the spike protein on the surface of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, from binding to healthy cells and infecting them.

In tests against the live virus in the lab, an aerosolized form of the nanobody rendered SARS-CoV-2 incapable of binding to the ACE2 receptor on healthy cells that line airways. The synthetic nanobody remained functional after it was freeze-dried, exposed to heat and aerosolized, they reported (PDF) in the preprint journal bioRxiv . The UCSF team dubbed the aerosol formulation "AeroNabs."

UCSF’s Walter said the llama-inspired AeroNabs could be used as a sort of personal protective equipment, a "stopgap" until the vaccines become available. UCSF is planning human trials and is in discussions with partners who could provide manufacturing and distribution support.

Afghanistan
Taliban IED experts blown up by own bomb in a mosque in North of Afghanistan
[KhaamaPress] A group of Taliban
...Arabic for students...
sustained casualties as they were busy manufacturing an improvised bomb, roadside kaboom, in a mosque in North of Afghanistan.

The 209th Shaheen Corps in a statement said the incident took place in a mosque in Chahabar Bolak district of Balkh.

The statement further added that a group of 8 Taliban IED experts were busy manufacturing a bomb inside a mosque in Sikandar Khel Village.

The premature explosion caused by IED killed four Talibs and maimed at least four others, the 209th Shaheen Corps added in its statement.

According to Shaheen Corps, the earth-shattering kaboom killed Zarif son of Najmuddin, Abdul Basir son of Abdul Basir, Abu Bakar son of Talib and Habib son of Arzankar.

The explosion also destroyed a large cache of explosives and other materials which the group was using to manufacture IEDs, the statement added.

The Taliban group has not commented in this regard so far.

The War on Landlords Has Begun
[Mises] As the widening gyre that that is 2020 continues to turn, it seems that every day some new disastrous and ill-thought-out proposal is made or policy implemented. Among the chaos, the chorus to cancel rent in particular has stuck out for its sheer insolence and the ease with which it has entered the discourse as a sensible policy solution.

The idea of abolishing rent is not new, but until now it has never really been considered anything but a nutty pipe dream. But with the economic carnage wreaked by the virus and ensuing government lockdown still ongoing it has disturbingly come to be viewed as a conceivable policy option. With tens of millions out of work, the ability to pay for basic necessities like housing is obviously a valid concern, but the callousness of the idea of simply expropriating housing from property owners is disturbing and indicative of darker trends coursing through the body politic in these turbulent times.

One of the most high-profile leaders of the cancel rent movement is Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who introduced legislation in April that basically amounts to nothing other than government extortion of landlords. Christian Britschgi reports that the bill would simply cancel all rent and mortgage payments for primary residencies across the entire country until a month after the federal state of emergency has ended. Attempting to collect rent or reporting the nonpayment of rent to credit agencies results in increasing fines, including the seizure of one's property.

#1  Bad enough I had to live through a professional tenant who wound up costing me nearly $20K last year *never mind the stress induced heart attacks), now I gotta hear shit like this. If the state wants to deprive me of rent from my downstairs apartment, the least they could do is knock that deprived rent off of my principal balance. Throw in no real estate taxes for the same time frame and you might actually get some other landlords to take this bullshit seriously. Until then, fuck off.

#2  Rent is a fact of life, but lowering rent (and other rent-seeking) as a %age of the economy IS a noble goal advocated by actual Capitalists from Adam Smith (via Ricardo onwards). The current parties seem to want to MAXIMISE rent-seeking in it's various forms by subsidising title (yet making it hard to get to all but the biggest companies) in all forms.
Posted by: Bright Pebbles || 08/18/2020 4:40 Comments || Top||

#3  If the rents are controlled by law or regulation, landlords will get it from the tenants in other ways: additional fees to cover their costs plus a reasonable profit (I informed tenants as part of their move-in walk through that I would be significantly overcharging them for each burnt out lightbulb they left for me to replace when they moved out, or they could do it themselves for the cost of 60 watt incandescents from the grocery store), delaying maintenance until the cost to hold the property matches the rents received, or selling the property to the tenants as condos. This is how slums and multimillion dollar condos happen — we’ve seen all that play out over the half century or more New York City has enforced rent control.
