#2 Background. 1918: Shia imams declare a kingdom in North Yemen. Gain independence from the Ottoman Empire. 1960s: A military rebellion and six-year civil war; Saudi Arabia and Egypt backed opposite sides. Kingdom ended Yemen Arab Republic established.
1967: The British leave southern Yemen (Aden), People’s Republic of Southern Yemen created.
three years later it becomes the Marxist People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen, known as South Yemen, a client state of Moscow. Occasional clashes between North and South Yemen. 1985 20,000 Yemenis, most from north, battle Soviets in Afghanistan. 1990: Cold War end creates change and Communist subsidies to south Yemen end. The two 0 Yemens merge into one.
Now the south (with the Hadhramaut especially) seeks independence from a North Yemen a misbegotten piece of earth that no one in their right mind wants any part of it.
