Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief May 17, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • MULLAH ABDUL KABIR APPOINTED AS NEW PRIME MINISTER – Sources say that Mawlawi Abdul Kabir was appointed Prime Minister by Hibatullah Akhundzada after a prolonged absence by the previous Prime Minister, Hassan Akhund. Akhund arrived in Kandahar over a month ago and never left. Taliban officials say the former PM became ill and Kabir was ordered to assume the post. Initially, it was said to be a temporary appointment but late reporting suggests it has now been made permanent. A source in Kabul said the appointment was seen as another ‘chess move’ by Kandahar against Kabul as Kabir is a reputed sycophant of the Supreme Leader.

  • PAKISTAN TO TRY VIOLENT PROTESTERS IN MILITARY TRIBUNALS – The announcement has triggered a backlash from human rights groups in Pakistan. Some are calling the move a gimmick by the regime to show support for the military after the riots last week. The military courts are not subject to the same standards of evidence as their civilian counterparts and are considered a practical means of serving justice in times of duress. A source in Rawalpindi said that military leaders had initially demanded that those involved in attacks on military bases be tried in this manner. However, Islamabad ordered that all ‘violent’ offenders be handled by the Army.

  • SOCIAL MEDIA SITES BLOCKED IN PARTS OF PAKISTAN AGAIN – Possibly in an attempt to limit PTI party followers from coordinating demonstrations, the PTA announced that it was restricting access to websites in the interest of the public good.

  • PTI PARTY LEADERS RELEASED FROM PRISON, ARRESTED IMMEDIATELY AFTER LEAVING PRISON – Dr. Shireen Mazari and Senator Falak Naz Chitrali walked out of Adiata Jail and were swarmed by Islamabad Police who arrested the two and took them to an undisclosed location. Both were arrested over charges of inciting their followers to riot and it is believed the recent arrest may involve charges of terrorism.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Khost: A blast took place in the Ismail Khel district of the province that resulted in the deaths of 2 non-combatant children. Some reports claim a drone was loitering overhead before the blast. Sources say the blast was likely targeting Mufti Farooq, a Waziristan cleric who is alleged to have ties to the TTP.
Nangarhar: Faqir Mohammad, Deputy Director of Telecommunications in Sherzad district was reportedly killed by an IED on Tuesday.

NEXT 24 HOURS
KHAN MAKES FRESH CALL FOR PROTESTS – The former PM took to Twitter and called on followers in his party to launch new protests on Tuesday. Khan missed the early portions of his court hearing on Tuesday and has been ordered back into court today for further hearings in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. He promised to host a rally on Thursday where he says he will lay out a new plan of action. However, he has also been ordered to appear in front of the NAB in Rawalpindi on Thursday. Many are expecting him to be arrested again and a new round of protests that could be met with significantly stiffer resistance by Police and Military forces will ensue. We have no definitive information about an impending arrest but feel duty-bound to continue warning at-risk Afghans in Pakistan to remain situationally aware and ready to take shelter should crowds begin to gather.

Deadly Clashes Erupt in Faryab Province as Indigenous Residents and Nomadic Herders Battle Over Grazing Lands
[8amMedia] Local sources in Faryab province report ongoing armed festivities between indigenous residents and nomadic herders over grazing lands in the region.

The festivities began on Friday, May 12, in the Bandar region of Kohistan
...a backwoods district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa distinguished by being even more rustic than is the norm among the local Pashtuns....
district and have since continued intermittently.

According to sources, three indigenous residents and one nomadic herder have been killed as a result of the festivities.

Sources claim that the herders are using both light and heavy weapons to attack local residents.

Efforts by local Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
officials to end the festivities have reportedly been unsuccessful.

The Taliban have not yet made an official statement on the matter.

Since the Taliban takeover, nomads in Faryab and some other provinces have been involved in legal disputes with indigenous residents over land grazing.

According to sources, in some cases, the Taliban have ruled in favor of the nomads, displacing indigenous residents.

Tunisia’s moderate Islamist leader gets year in jail after trial decried as sham
[IsraelTimes] Rached Ghannouchi refuses to leave detention and appear in court; prominent critic of President Kais Saied says his 2021 move to take all powers into his hands amounts to coup

A court has sentenced moderate Tunisian Islamist leader Rached Ghannouchi to a year in prison for allegedly referring to coppers as tyrants in what his party said early Tuesday amounted to a sham trial.

Ghannouchi, 81, founder of the Ennahdha party,
...the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood in Tunisia...
has refused to be removed from his place of detention for questioning or to attend Monday’s trial, considering that the cases are "political settling of scores targeting opponents of the regime," lawyer Samir Dilou, a former party leader, said in an interview with The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

Ghannouchi, a former speaker of parliament, is the most prominent critic of Tunisian President Kais Saied. He has maintained that Saied’s move in 2021 to take all powers into his hands amounted to a coup d’etat.

Ghannouchi was detained in mid-April on the charge of plotting against the security of the state. He has been called in numerous times for questioning on various matters, but this was the first time he was not released.

Monday’s case grew out of a complaint by a security union member claiming that Ghannouchi used the word "taghout," or tyrant, while eulogizing a member of his party at a February 2022 funeral. According to a tweet by his daughter Soumaya, he said that the dear departed "did not fear poverty, ruler or tyrant." Ennahda condemned the decision to prosecute as "an unjust political ruling" and called for his immediate release.

Ghannouchi is also being investigated for what his party says is another case of twisting words — allegedly evoking the threat of civil war if Ennahdha and other opposition parties are excluded from the political scene.

His party said on its English-language Twitter account that Ghannouchi was charged with conspiracy against state security and ordered to remain in prison pending trial.

"Kais Saied is making a mockery of the judiciary, using it as a tool for political Dire Revenge and persecution," his daughter tweeted.

About 20 other people, including the director of the respected radio Mosaique, Noureddine Bouttar, are currently detained on a variety of charges.

The crackdown on opponents comes amid growing social tensions and deepening economic troubles in Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring pro-democracy movement more than a decade ago.

#1  "moderate"? Rachid Ghanouchi? His involvement with radical Islamists goes back to the early 1990s when he appeared in Saudi Arabia with Sudanese Islamist Hasan Turabi in an effort to reduce Saudi govt penalties placed on Osama Bin Laden. He has appeared at all major radical Islamist meetings held since then. In the aftermath of the Arab Spring he and his En Nahda Party have been responsible for the chaos that exists in Tunisia. Moderate, my arse!

BREAKING: Gunmen Attack U.S. Embassy Convoy in Nigeria, Staffers Killed
[RedState] Gunmen attacked a convoy of U.S. embassy staffers in Nigeria Tuesday.

Two staffers were shot to death, as were two policemen.

The assailants opened fire on the convoy along a major road in Ogbaru local government area in Anambra State, one of the epicenters of separatist violence in the region, according to the police. "The hoodlums murdered two of the Police Mobile Force operatives and two staff of the Consulate, and set their bodies ablaze and their vehicles," said Tochukwu Ikenga, a police spokesman in Anambra.

A joint team of security forces was deployed to the scene but arrived only after the assailants escaped with two other police officers and one of the drivers, Ikenga added. He said no U.S. citizen was on the trip.

When they say "escaped with," they appear to mean "kidnapped," as Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) explained.

A resident of Dagestan was sentenced to a long term for preparing a terrorist attack in Stavropol
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] The court sentenced Ramin Nurmagomedov, a resident of Dagestan, to 12 years in prison, finding him guilty of plotting a terrorist attack in Stavropol and involvement in the banned Islamic State terrorist organization.

The Southern District Military Court sentenced a resident of Dagestan, Ramin Nurmagomedov, to 12 years in prison, finding him guilty under several articles of the Criminal Code, Interfax-South reports today with reference to the press service of the court.

Nurmagomedov was found guilty under Part 2 of Art. 205.5 (participation in the activities of a terrorist organization), Part 1 of Art. 30 and part 2 of Art. 205 (attempt to commit a terrorist act), Part 2 of Art. 223.1 (illegal manufacture of explosives), Part 1 of Art. 222.1 (illicit trafficking in explosives) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, according to a publication posted today in the telegram channel of the court.

According to the investigation and the court, on October 12, 2021, Nurmagomedov swore allegiance to the head of the banned Islamic State terrorist organization in Stavropol and sent a recording of his oath via the Internet.

"Also, Nurmagomedov decided to make an explosion at one of the transport infrastructure facilities in the city of Stavropol. To achieve this goal, the defendant purchased the components necessary for the manufacture of an improvised explosive and an explosive device," the court said in a publication.

However, the very next day, October 13, 2021, the security forces seized an explosive and an explosive device, the report says. "The defendant was found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 12 years in a strict regime correctional colony with the first 3 years in prison, with a fine of 210,000 rubles. The verdict has not entered into legal force and can be appealed by the parties in the Military Court of Appeal," the court said.

The Grand Turk
Three Turkish soldiers killed in Sirnak clashes blamed on PKK
[Rudaw] At least three Ottoman Turkish soldiers and two suspected Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members were killed during an operation carried out by the Ottoman Turkish military in the southeastern Sirnak province on Tuesday.

"3 gendarmerie personnel were martyred and 1 security guard was maimed in the operation," the Ottoman Turkish interior ministry said, adding that the operation "neutralized" three "terrorists" but did not explicitly mention if they are linked to the PKK.

"The terrorists’ affiliation was not specified" but "PKK has been known to be active in the region," state-owned Anadolu Agency said.

Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important...
, however, blamed the PKK and offered condolences to the soldiers’ families.

"We will resolutely continue our fight against the separatist terrorist organization PKK and its extensions inside and outside our borders, and we will not stop until the last terrorist is eliminated," Erdogan said on Twitter.

The PKK is a Kurdish group which has fought for Kurdish rights and waged an armed insurgency against The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
for decades, and is designated a terrorist organization by Ankara, who frequently targets the group domestically as well as its alleged offshoots southward in the Kurdistan Region and Syria.

Ottoman Turkish media and officials use the term "neutralize" to imply surrenders, killings or capturing on the battlefield.

Presidential candidate and leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Kemal Kilicdaroglu extended his condolences to the families of the soldiers killed during the operation.

"May God have mercy on our soldiers who were martyred in the operation in Sirnak, our condolences and patience to their families; I wish a speedy recovery to our injured security guard and soldier," Kilicdaroglu tweeted.

Kilicdaroglu will face sitting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a runoff on May 28 as he eyes the presidency and looks to oust Erdogan after two decades in power. However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
the candidate has faced criticism from Ottoman Turkish nationalists for seeking to partner with the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party
...every time you hear the phrase white people, white supremacy, white anything but paint, you're listening to a Democrat. Ask him/her/it to reimagine something for you; they do that a lot, though not well. They can hear a dog whistle a mile or two away. They invented the spoils system and Tammany Hall, and inspired the addition of the word (Thomas) Nasty to the English language. They want to stop continental drift and repeal the law of unintended side effects...
(HDP), whose alliance won over ten percent of the parliamentary vote in the first round and who nationalists accuse to be the political front for the PKK — an accusation that the HDP vehemently denies.

The HDP acted as an intermediary during the grinding of the peace processor between the Ottoman Turkish state and the PKK between 2013 and 2015, marking short years of hope that the decades-long conflict that left tens of thousands dead might finally come to an end. The talks collapsed in 2015.

In 2021, Turkey’s chief prosecutor filed a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court seeking the dissolution of the HDP for alleged links to the PKK. The case is ongoing.

In November, Turkey launched a domestic operation targeting PKK members in Sirnak - an extension of an earlier campaign across several provinces seeking to remove the PKK from the countryside.

DeSantis sending National Guard troops, drones to Texas to help with migrant crisis
[NYPOST] Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will send 800 Florida National Guard troops, drones and other assets to Texas to help with the ongoing migrant crisis, officials said Tuesday.

The Republican governor has ripped President Biden for the spiraling situation at the southern border in recent weeks, intensifying his attacks with the expiration of the Title 42 public health order which allowed for the rapid expulsion of migrants colonists.

"While Biden ignores the crisis he created, Florida stands ready to help Texas respond," DeSantis said.

"The impacts of Biden’s border crisis are felt by communities across the nation, and the federal government’s abdication of duty undermines the illusory sovereignty of our country and the rule of law," DeSantis added in a statement.

Thousands of migrants colonists who have made it over the border in past months have moved into communities across the country, causing problems for reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel...
and New York, and stretching local resources in Denver and other, smaller communities.

Florida will also send 300 law enforcement officers from various state agencies, along with five aircraft, 20 emergency management personnel, and two mobile command vehicles.

India-Pakistan
Two Hizbul Terrorists Accused Of Killing Mirwaiz Farooq Arrested 33 Years After Incident
[OneIndia] The Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
Police arrested two people who were involved in the killing of Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq, 33 years after the then chief priest of the Valley fell to the bullets of Hizbul Mujahideen
...Party of Holy Warriors, founded by Muhammad Ahsan Dar in September 1989. One of the Pak sock puppets waging jihad in Indian Kashmir. It was originally organized as the armed wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. In 1990, Dar declared Hizbul as the sword arm of Jamaat. Hizbul murdered many of the pro-independence intelligentsia in Kashmir. After the organization was taken over by Syed Salahuddin Dar and several other ex-Hizb leaders were assassinated between 2001 and 2003...
assassins, a police brass hat said on Tuesday.

Special DG CID Jammu and Kashmir R R Swain said the State Investigation Agency (SIA) arrested Javed Bhat and Zahoor Bhat who had managed to escape along with two others after the killing of Mirwaiz Farooq at his residence on May 21, 1990, as reported by PTI.

Officials, however, did not divulge other details such as when and from where the accused were arrested.

Ayoub Dar, also an accused, was already arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment by a court.

''The four accused were absconding. Main accused Abdullah Bangaroo was killed in an encounter while another accused, Ab Rehman Shigan, was also killed in an encounter during the investigation.

''Javed Bhat alias Azmat Khan and Zahoor Bhat alias Bilal managed to escape. It was Zahoor who had pulled the trigger after entering the bedroom of the Mirwaiz,'' Swain told news hounds here.

He said the absconders have been arrested by ''the long arms of the law after more than 30 years. They will face a trial now''.

''With this all accused of Mirwaiz killing have been brought to justice,'' he added. Swain said the duo, who was arrested on the basis of intelligence developed by the SIA, have been handed over to the CBI.

Giving details, Swain said Javed and Zahoor had gone underground and during all these years were hiding in Nepal and Pakistain among other places before returning to Kashmir a few years ago. ''Maintaining a low profile, changing addresses and shifting residences, they avoided the gaze of law enforcement agencies. They are now liable to immediately face trial in a designated TADA court in Delhi which has already completed the trial in respect of Dar," he added.

According to police, Mirwaiz Farooq was killed by Hizbul Mujahideen cadres, accusing him of being a 'peacenik' and an 'Indian agent'.

''A case FIR No 61/1990 came to be registered in Police Station Nageen, Srinagar to investigate the crime. Thereafter the government of the day transferred the investigation to CBI on 11 June 1990,'' Swain said.

Before killing the Mirwaiz, all the five Hizb murderous Moslems had gone to Pakistain for training in 1990. Back in Srinagar, Bangroo received instructions in April 1990 from his ISI handler in Pakistain to eliminate the Mirwaiz.

Iraqi Army Foils ISIS Attack in Baghdad
[Shafaq News] The Iraqi army successfully thwarted an attempted attack by the ISIS terrorist organization in the capital city of Baghdad.

A responsible security source informed Shafaq News Agency that precise security information reached the command of the 17th Division, 25th Brigade of the army, regarding the presence of a suicide belt and prepared bombs. Immediately, an intelligence officer from the brigade proceeded to the location to conduct a search in the Yousifiyah area, specifically in the Sayyid Abdullah district, located in southern Baghdad.

Iraqi security forces Arrest attackers in Al-Buaytha clash
[Shafaq News] The Iraqi Security Media Cell announced on Tuesday the arrest of individuals described as "aggressors" in the festivities that took place in the al-Buaytha area, south of Baghdad, yesterday.
We got nuthin’, as JosephMendiola used to say.
The festivities reportedly involved security forces and personnel from the Baghdad Municipality tasked with removing encroachments on public property in the area.

According to the Security Media Cell's statement received by Shafaq News Agency, the incident resulted in "minor injuries to two individuals." The security forces immediately took legal measures and apprehended the perpetrators, referring them for investigation and the removal of encroachments in the al-Buaytha area, which were deemed unauthorized.

The Security Media Cell urged citizens to refrain from constructing buildings on public lands and advised against purchasing such properties, as state authorities will not tolerate such violations. It emphasized the importance of relying on news and reports issued by relevant authorities, avoiding misinterpretation, spreading rumors, and allowing opportunists to disturb the country's security and social stability for dubious purposes.

Yesterday, armed festivities erupted between the Federal Police and the Hezbollah Brigades (a Shiite armed faction affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces) in the al-Buaytha area of Dora, south of Baghdad, according to a security source who spoke to Shafaq News.

According to the information received, the festivities occurred due to the Hezbollah Brigades' refusal to allow the excavation of agricultural lands, claiming ownership of the land.

Turkish drone kills three PKK-linked fighters in Shingal: Kurdistan CT
[Rudaw] A Ottoman Turkish dronezap on the Yazidi heartland of Shingal on Tuesday killed three fighters of an all-Yazidi force linked with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Kurdish counterterrorism forces said.

"At 12:00 pm, a Ottoman Turkish army drone targeted a base of the Shingal Resistance® Units (YBS) fighters in Khanasor locality of Shingal district, killing 3 fighters and wounding another," the Erbil-based Kurdistan CT said.

The attack blamed on The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...

The PKK is a Kurdish force fighting for the increased political and cultural rights of Kurds in Turkey and has waged an armed insurgency against Ankara for decades. It is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, who frequently targets the group and its alleged offshoots through military operations and dronezaps in the Kurdistan Region and Syria.

Two Palestinians get life sentences for Elad terror attack
[IsraelTimes] Two Paleostinians are convicted of carrying out a deadly terror attack in the city of Elad last year and sentenced to life in prison.

On May 5, As’ad Yusef As’ad al-Rifa’i, 19, and Subhi Emad Sbeihat, 20, hacked and stabbed three people to death and severely maimed several others.

They were each handed four life sentences for murder and attempted murder and an additional 20 years for related terror offenses by the Lod court.

Al-Rifa’i confessed to security forces that he committed the axe attack with Sbeihat, killing Oren Ben Yiftah, a 35-year-old driver from Lod, and Elad residents Yonatan Havakuk and Boaz Gol, both in their 40s. The pair attacked civilians on city streets and in a park as Israelis celebrated Independence Day with outdoor festivities.

IDF troops said to clash with Palestinians in West Bank as tensions remain high
[IsraelTimes] Israeli forces reportedly surround house near Jericho, demand wanted suspects turn themselves in; no injuries reported.

Israeli forces exchanged fire with armed Paleostinians in the West Bank on Tuesday morning, the military and Paleostinian media said, as tensions remained high days after Israel agreed to a ceasefire with the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
-based Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
following several days of violence.

Paleostinian media reports said undercover Israeli troops entered the northern West Bank city of Jenin and clashed with locals after being discovered. Shortly after, the military sent in reinforcements, the reports said.

The Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry said three were maimed during the festivities.

The Israel Defense Forces said troops had entered the village of Wadi Burqin on the outskirts of Jenin to arrest a wanted Paleostinian suspected of shooting at soldiers.

As the suspect was being arrested, "there was an exchange of fire, during which the troops shot at gunnies who shot at them," the IDF said, adding that several button men were hit.

"As the troops left the village, gunnies shot at a military vehicle and threw an bomb," the IDF said.

The IDF has continued to operate in the West Bank as part of a long crackdown on terror groups following a wave of deadly attacks last year.

Early Monday, a Paleostinian gunman was rubbed out by Israeli forces during festivities in the Askar refugee camp in the northern West Bank. The Israeli troops were in the area to prepare to demolish the home of the son of a Paleostinian terrorist who carried out a deadly shooting attack earlier this year, killing two Israeli brothers. The shooter’s sons were charged with murder for helping to plan the attack.

Suspected ISIS leader arrested in Hasaka
[Rudaw] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Monday announced that they had dismantled an alleged Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) cell in the countryside of northeast Syria's (Rojava) Hasaka with the support of the global coalition, apprehending the leader of the cell and one of his lover companions.

The SDF accused the detainee of being "directly responsible" for the group’s activities in south of Hasaka and north of Deir ez-Zor, saying he had been actively planning attacks against security forces and civilians and posed a threat to the region’s stability.

"The operation was supported by air surveillance and ground support by the international coalition forces," said the SDF in a statement, adding that weapons and technical equipment were found at the site of the operation, as well documents confirming the suspect’s affiliation to the hard boy group.

The US-led coalition is yet to comment on the operation.

At least 13 suspected ISIS operatives were killed in April in operations carried out by the global coalition and local forces in Iraq and Syria, with an additional 28 suspects also arrested during that month, according to a report by the US Central Command (CENTCOM).

The coalition said late last month that ISIS activities in Syria and Iraq had significantly decreased since the beginning of the year.

Successive leaders of the group have been targeted in their hideouts in Syria. Earlier this months, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
announced it had killed suspected ISIS chief Abu Hussein al-Qurayshi during an operation in Jindires, northwest Syria.
