This is Journolist-Stoopid. Either the soil is stable or you steel-case the pile excavations to prevent sloughing. One method (non-cased) involves skin friction and end-bearing to develop resistance and the other (cased) depends on end-bearing only. This building was already on piles from the original construction/design. Just wait til the glass starts popping out...

#8 Wasn't it the John Hancock building (or some other) in Boston where the windows kept popping out? Seems the wind was creating a vacuum that sucked the glass out or something.
Allegedly, they called in professors from MIT who concluded that the only way to solve the problem was to rotate the building by 15 or 20 degrees.

#9 Recently seeing the building in Surfside Florida collapse I don't know how safe I'd feel. Learning this building is sinking possibly another 30 inches wow. Also what will happen during the next earthquake.
San Francisco if I remember correctly has seismic standards due to the earthquakes there, I wonder how this plays into the construction.
