1. Life is cheap

2. Life is harsh

3. Some lives end up slightly more valuable than others, e.g. Chechens, "Russians", those with various skills, money, connections.

4. As a result of 1 &2, Those that aren't valuable end up having to prove themselves through the Darwin School of Warfare.

It's all very Occidental.
