#2 My understand is that the 'cladding' was an attempt to make the structure appear more modern, lipstick on pig as it were. It was also a previous code concern and possible violation.

Appears the gov't is moving in to pay everyone off with free assistance loans, relocation assistance, with a blind eye turned toward citizenship. Something in common with former residents of Chernobyl it might appear.

#3 There are a lot of older buildings that get 'dressed up' with a new outer finishing. Materials used as 'cladding' (mounted to the existing exterior walls) here in the states must pass flammability tests. Not sure about GB or Europe.

The Grenfell 'exterior upgrade' (completed last year) used what is called an Aluminum Composite or 'Sandwich Panel'. Its flammability is determined by the core materials.

Apparently the new Grenfell cladding used a 100% rigid polyisocyanurate foam attached directly to the building for 'Energy Savings' and then covered by Aluminum/Polyethylene-core outer Sandwich Panels.

All that money spent on a 40 year old building and still no sprinklers.

#5 I'm thinking that composite is similar to what covered the outside of The Address hotel in Dubai that went up like a roman candle during a NYE fireworks display in 2016.

Five London high-rises evacuated over fire safety fears

[IsraelTimes] 800 publicly owned apartment towers deemed unsafe after tests revealed exterior cladding installed Grenfell Tower contractor.

The residents are being housed in hotels across London at while the work is being done. It is expected to take four weeks.

During that time they will no doubt be inspecting the apartments as well, which should prove interesting.
