#11 Found on the internet somewhere
Cherokee is technically not what the Cherokee people called themselves. Hernando de Soto picked up the name Cherokee from a tribe to the east.

“We got stuck with it. It isn’t even our tribal word,” Belt said.

Cherokee people called themselves Kituwah. Some Cherokee people have again taken to calling themselves Kituwah — indeed, Cherokee who held on to their native language never quit — but a tribal-wide shift would be a likely insurmountable task, Belt admitted.

#12 The Sioux got that name from an enemy ethnic group, the name is widely considered derogatory, means something along the lines of "enemy snakes". That tribe is reverting to their own language's name for themselves: Dakota, Nakota, Lakota, depending on the dialect.

#13 May I suggest: gichi-mookomaan (Ojibwe) or Chimookmaan (Odawa) meaning "Big Knife" or "Long Knife" applied to Americans for over 200 years. The Jeep Chimookmaan has an interesting sound to it, even resembles "Cherokee". I'm sure someone would object to that.
