These are people who lack all meaning in life. The reason they all swarmed to the Ukraine stuff is that it allowed them to experience what they imagine is normal human emotion and community spirit. Their conjured image of the brave Ukrainians taking up arms against the aggressor reflects their own lack of purpose. Many Americans have been reduced to the bug-man existence of consuming product but the Cloud People are the pinnacle of the bug-man lifestyle.

This is why they are so fond of using analogies drawn from comic book movies and children’s books. You will notice that the people comparing Putin to Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter movies are childless. They did not pick up the reference from watching the shows with their kids. They are the primary consumers of this material. This fantasy material has become folklore for people who lack the cultural structure that provides an adult frame of reference to understand the world.

#7 I'm no Bacevich fan. One gets the impression that if his son had come home alive and gotten a posting at the Pentagon, Andrew would be all-in with the neocon agenda.

#8 Never read any Harry Potter or saw any movies. I'm just not interested in books or movies geared toward 6, 7, and 8 year olds. I prefer things that make me think.

#9 HP: It was THE THING back when my kids were young. I read the Potter books to be able to push my children to read books and we would have a common link. It worked. The movies came later, and we enjoyed them together

#10 Mr. Wife picked up a copy at the airport on his way back from somewhere when it first came out, because all his colleagues were raving about it. He never enjoyed children’s lit, even as a child, so passed it on to me to add to my personal collection. A lot of the older books now designated for children were in fact originally written for adults, a fact I’ve always found heartening given some of the crap written intentionally for children over the past century. The trailing daughters picked through my books as well as acquiring their own once they became fluent readers; they enjoyed Harry Potter, and it connected them to American culture after spending their early years abroad (where the children were also reading Harry Potter). The parents of td#1’s best friend at the time forbad the child to read that black magic stuff, which let me have some useful conversations with the tds.
