#14 Daily Mail article has a couple of interesting points, namely that apparently Jill has a secret signal to Joe to shut up when he gets into trouble (anyway is his signature term for either losing his thought or ending a risky comment), and used it to cover for him on the question of cognitive decline.

The second point is the bandage on his hand, the little dot on the vein that can be used to inject an IV when the veins in the arm are too hard to use. It implies they juiced him before the show, and that explains his semi-lucid, spry opening of the performance, and the appearance of Jill midway, to provide cover as he begins to sundown.
This is all about looking for the speaking/book deals and the hint at her "diary" reveals.
