Police Arrest Peter Steel
A large parolee wearing nothing but tennis shoes led sheriff's deputies on a high-speed car and foot chase that ended with him being Tasered, shot with a bean bag gun and arrested for indecent exposure after allegedly exposing himself, according to the District Attorney's Office. Deputies chased Peter Allen Steele, 38, on Saturday after responding to two reports in Woodside and Portola Valley of a 6-foot-7-inch, 250-pound man ringing a doorbell and standing naked in a doorway.

Deputies reported seeing a car that matched the victims' description but the driver sped onto Interstate 280 when deputies tried stopping the vehicle. At Sand Hill Road, the car struck the side of the road, flattening the tires. The driver continued on the rims until the car stopped, then jumped out naked, aside from his shoes, and ran into the open garage of a nearby home. The man went through the residence and to the back where deputies used a Taser and a bean bag gun to end the chase, according to the District Attorney's Office.
A good time was had by all, except the unsuspecting residents.
The man, later identified as Steele was taken to the hospital with a pulse of 220 and staff there said he was observed mast*rbating on the gurney, according to the District Attorney's Office.
Mr. Wife's Aunt Beady had a friend who, while working at a convenience store, was presented by a customer who laid upon the counter a can of soup, a loaf of bread, and his pen*s. The dear old thing was so flustered she picked up the can and... Those of you who've taken biology remember the planaria, right? Anyway, Mr. Steele was lucky it was unflappable nurses around.
A search of his car turned up a s*x toy in the form of rubber female genitalia, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Steele was charged with two counts of indecent exposure, driving while under the influence,
We won't ask under the influence of what, 'k?
resisting arrest, trespassing, vandalism and fleeing a peace officer. Steele is on parole for felony assault out of San Francisco and has prior felony convictions for stalking, making threats and evading police.

He remains in custody in lieu of $60,000 bail.

A Sequel To Master and Commander?
In a discussion of recent underrated films go - and granted, my definition of recent may differ from yours - I would still bring up Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. I might be the only person who believes a movie that earned ten Oscar nominations and over $200 million around the world is underrated, I realize, but honestly, did you know it made that much and was so heavily nominated?

Russell Crowe wants another Master and Commander movie, and in theory, I'm all for it. Crowe tells the AP (via USA Today) "there's still a long way to go" in adapting the Patrick O'Brian book The Reverse of the Medal into a film. O'Brian wrote over 20 novels based on Crowe's character, Capt. Jack Aubrey and Paul Bettany's low-key doctor, Stephen Maturin. At issue is acquiring the film rights to the novel.

Now, I said that in theory I support this. A lot of it depends on who else is involved. Peter Weir knows a thing or two about directing movies, and while you don't need Weir, Crowe shouldn't settle for much of a step down.

The best thing about Far Side in my opinion was the direction and the battle sequences. If they secure enough financing (although, let's be honest, the sequel can't cost $150 million like the first one), Crowe can attract a good director. That's key.

#3  I don't know exactly why this is on Rantburg, but...that was a terrific movie, and I never understood why there wasn't a sequel a year. Hollywood is re-vivifying the rotten corpses of ancient TV shows that weren't good when they were new; why not film O'Brian's novels instead?

I picked this baby up at Costco the other day for something like five bucks. Haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Mmm, hot naval action.

#4  I've read every one of the books in the Aubrey/Maturin series. Several of them would make fine movies.
By the way, about the only connection between the book Far Side of the World and the movie was that Aubrey chased a ship. In the book, it was an American ship during the war of 1812. I guess that wouldn't have gone over well with an American audience.

#6  Read all the books. Hard to make them into movies because things move .. slowly. That befits life in the early 19th century but it's hard to make work in a film. Note Mr. Crowe's comment about how there's a long way to go with the script.

Russia Sending A Message To China?
China has called on Russia not to overreact in its clampdown on a Moscow bazaar, home to tens of thousands of Chinese traders and well-known for its thriving contraband trade.

The unexpected shutdown of the sprawling Cherkizovsky Market in the Russian capital last month has caused "enormous economic losses" to Chinese traders there, the commerce ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

"The Chinese side pays deep attention to this and... urges the Russian side to handle the issue with discretion," said ministry spokesman Yao Jian in the statement.

The statement urged Russian authorities to protect the legal rights of Chinese firms "particularly their safety and property security", but added that it supported all efforts to clamp down on illegal smuggling.

China also pointed out that an historical tax loophole that traders exploited to import goods more easily into Russia was also a problem, but solving it would take time.

"(China) hopes relevant Russian authorities and the Moscow city government take into account the historic factors... avoid overreacting, and solve the problem via a friendly negotiation and in a gradual manner," Yao said.

The Cherkizovsky Market, where traders from China and Central Asia sell their goods out of shipping containers and from open-air stalls, was closed June 30 for sanitary violations on a temporary basis.

The closure came after reports said Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was annoyed by recent extravagance shown by Cherkizovsky's multimillionaire owner Telman Ismailov.

Russian officials have said it was likely to be shut for good this year.

Nearly 80,000 Chinese merchants trade at the market and the crackdown will force many out of business, earlier Chinese state media reports said, quoting experts warning the row could stymie Chinese investment in Russia.

Moroccan courts investigate election fraud
[Maghrebia] With at least one election result annulled and several candidates arrested, Moroccans are seeing courts take a more active role in dealing with cases of electoral fraud.

On Monday (July 13th), the Marrakech administrative court annulled election results in the Menara district, following an appeal by the Front of Democratic Forces (FFD) over irregularities. The ruling overturned the election of PAM candidate Fatima Zahra Mansouri as Marrakech mayor.

Members of the public in Marrakech had accused candidates of using "dirty money" to buy votes, particularly among the poorest citizens.

In another case, the Court of First Instance in Rabat refused to grant Said Yabou from the Istiqlal party bail on Wednesday (July 15th). He was arrested on July 3rd shortly after being elected president of the commune of Youssoufia in Rabat on fraud charges.

In Kelaat Sraghna, where a death was reported in relations to the elections, a candidate from the Istiqlal Party was arrested on May 31st with 3 million dirhams in hand that he was distributing to voters.

"The courts are currently playing a regulatory role after the elections," said lecturer Nadir Moumni, "by handling disputes at a time when the political parties should be opening up a national debate involving all players... so that an agreement can be reached on the minimum ethical standards to be observed."

"A large part of the responsibility lies with the political parties who, in a number of cases, have chosen candidates without fully considering the risks," Moumni said.

Saudi Arabia bans the opening of public cinemas
[Jerusalem Post Middle East] The Saudi Arabian government has officially banned the opening of public cinemas in the kingdom following protests over the government considering the issuance of licenses for movie theaters across the country. Saudi Interior Minister Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz reportedly made the decision following pressure from Saudi Mufti Sheikh Abd Al-Aziz Al-Sheikh to make the public screening of films illegal. The news comes after extensive debate within Saudi society over the propriety of films.

The government has indicated a willingness to consider the opening of public movie theaters. This has been resisted by those who subscribe to the strict Wahhabist interpretation of Islam and believe films have the potential to debase the Islamic fabric of Saudi society. Wahhabism dominates the kingdom's religious establishment.

"The problem is not the government," Hussam Abu Sabra, CEO of Donya Film Productions, told The Media Line. "The government is trying to do something. The problem is some people in the government who they think it will degrade Islam and bring in bad ideas so they outright refuse it without negotiation."

"They don't understand why people want cinema, that film will be good for Saudi people," Abu Sabra continued. "People need food for the mind."

"But in the meantime a production company has nowhere to show their work," he added. "We can only market the films outside the Kingdom."

Silvio Saadi, CEO of Silver Grey Picture & Sound, agreed that the principle obstacle facing the development of Saudi Arabian film is cultural, not a lack of government interest. "The announcement is really a surprise because everything we've been hearing has been very positive towards film making in the kingdom," Saadi said. "The problem this country faces is not where the government wants to go but that the majority of the people don't want to go there."

"One of the main problems for Saudis is having mixed theaters," Saadi explained. "We have mixed restaurants in Saudi, but at a cinema you have men and women entering a dark room and hanging out together."

Saadi's company was the first film and sound production company in the Kingdom.

"There used to be 8 or 9 theaters - then it was all shut down," he explains. "We started a film production company when no one dared do this," he remembers.

Saadi says that over the years the Kingdom has witnessed a number of small steps towards public film screenings. "Over the past few years there has been a lot of talk about them giving licenses again," he said. "A few months ago I heard they had given a license for a theater in a mall in Jeddah and last year we were commissioned by the King's library to produce two full-length IMAX films, which we shot here in Saudi. But while there is one IMAX theater in an ARAMCO compound in the Eastern province and the King has ordered the opening of two more IMAX theaters in two more provinces, they are within private compounds."

Most film production companies base their businesses on TV programs, commercials and documentaries. "We work for the Ministry of Health, the Saudi Tourism Commission and the private sector," Saadi said. "The only problem in Saudi is producing feature films because we can't make money out of it."

"It's frustrating as a producer," he said. "It doesn't take you anywhere."

Despite the restrictions on Saudi filmmakers, Saudi Arabia is host to Rotana, the largest production company in the Middle East, and industry analysts say dozens of Saudi films have been screened in international film festivals. "We have a lot of cinema enthusiasts and there are lots of short films made by Saudi directors," Ahmed Al-Omran, an influential Saudi blogger, told The Media Line. "They are more for artistic expression and are not screened publicly, but it's only a matter of time until we have proper movie theaters."

The first commercial screening of a Saudi movie in over 30 years took place last month under much fanfare. "It was a special screening at a cultural center," Al-Omran said. "People could go and buy tickets and watch a movie but it was only for a week or so." Despite street protests by Saudis opposed to the screenings, thousands of people were reported to have attended.

JS body finds corruption, irregularities by DCC staff
[Bangla Daily Star] A parliamentary sub-committee has detected corruption and irregularities in a number of cases of tender process, development work, tax assessments and leasing out of Dhaka City Corporation bus terminals in the last seven years.

The sub-committee yesterday decided at a meeting to set up a temporary office at the DCC Bhaban to gear up its investigation into corruption at the corporation.

The parliamentary standing committee on LGRD ministry formed the four-member probe body on July 21 to investigate widespread corruption and irregularities at DCC during the rules of the last BNP-led government and caretaker government.

"We have found a number of cases of corruption and irregularities in Dhaka City Corporation during the last seven years," Monowar Hossain Chowdhury, chief of the sub-committee, told reporters after the meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Officials of the LGRD ministry and DCC, who were present at the meeting, also pointed out cases of irregularities and corruption that took place at the DCC during the time.

"We have detected irregularities in the development work of the corporation, leasing processes of cattle markets in the city during Eid festivals and leasing of bus terminals," said the committee chief.

PAGAN POLICE HOLIDAY TO CELEBRATE FESTIVALS
POLICE who worship heathen gods will get eight days off a year to celebrate pagan festivals. They are also in line for thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money in recognition of their status as a "community" of pagans.

Home Office chiefs this week gave their backing to the Pagan Police Association which will be entitled to public funding, along the lines of that given to other rank-and-file organisations like the National Black Police Association. Once recognised as a minority, officers will be given time off for the eight annual pagan festivals, including Halloween and the summer solstice.

Last year the Home Office introduced a pagan oath which can be used in the courts and yesterday officials said self-styled witches, Druids and heathens were welcome in the police.

But last night there was growing anger that public money should be spent supporting the policemen's "religion".

Matthew Elliott, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "This is utterly ridiculous and a total waste of money. Police can follow whatever religion they like but there is no reason why taxpayers should fund them to lobby for their personal beliefs.

"Instead of bending over backwards to fund this politically correct group, the Government should have told them to get on with the fight against crime. The last thing we need is a police force split up into innumerable minority groups."
That has already happened. If bobbies who belong to the "Religion of Peace" can get all their holidays off or even be police in the first place, there is no reason the adherents of these ancient European belief systems cannot do the same.
Laura Midgely, of the Campaign Against Political Correctness, said: "The police have got a very clear job to do -- they should just get on and do it."

Heathen PC Andy Pardy, of Hertfordshire police, met Home Office officials this week to discuss the creation of an officially-sanctioned pagan support group for police nationwide. The association will provide support and guidance to pagan officers around the country who want to fit their beliefs around their police work.

More than 30,000 people claimed to be practising pagans in the 2001 census. There are believed to be up to 200,000 pagans in Britain.

There are also believed to be more than 500 pagan police in Britain, including a 50-strong coven in London's Metropolitan force.

The cult was the subject of the 1973 classic film The Wicker Man, starring Brit Ekland .

Adherents worship nature and believe in many gods. Practices include witchcraft and druidism.

As a heathen, PC Pardy, who has been a policeman for seven years, worships Viking gods, including hammer-wielding Thor, the one-eyed Odin and the god of fertility, Freyr.

Another heathen, PC Andy Hill, of Staffordshire police, is a practising wiccan -- a pagan witch. He is also the founder of paganpolice groupuk.co.uk, a website for police officers. PC Hill, who claims he has cast spells to help his promotion prospects, said: "This is nothing to do with black magic, or devil worshipping. Witchcraft is not the hocus pocus, puff of smoke, turning people into frogs stuff you see on the TV. It is working with nature for good."

A Home Office spokesman said: "The Government wants a police service that reflects the diverse communities it serves."
As you may have heard, female RoP cops are being issued their own burqa style uniforms. Pagan cops should therefore insist on having their own distinctive uniforms, complete with horned or plumed helmet, leather jerkin, and broadsword. It would be great in high crime areas.
Just so long as they don't go skyclad ....

Honduras Reinstates Curfew, Warns of Action
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Honduras' interim government warned of armed actions to return ousted President Manuel Zelaya to power and reinstated an overnight curfew it had lifted only days earlier.

Roberto Micheletti, the former congressional leader chosen by lawmakers to serve out the final six months of Zelaya's term following the June 28 coup, said Wednesday that forces he didn't identify "were handing out some guns" to foment rebellion. A day earlier, Zelaya said Hondurans have the right to launch an insurrection against the government.

"There are reports, I don't know if they are real, I haven't been officially informed, that there is a group of armed people and that Zelaya is going to enter over the Nicaraguan border this Saturday," Micheletti said.

He added that "we still have confidence that this problem will be resolved through dialogue." But a few hours later, a government statement read on television said a midnight-5 a.m. curfew was being imposed starting Wednesday night. It cited "continuing and open threats by groups looking to provoke disturbances and disorder."

Aide: Ousted Honduran president on route back home
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – A top aide of ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya said he was heading back to the country Thursday, while thousands of his supporters blocked roads to demand his return to power. Patricia Rodas, foreign minister of Zelaya's toppled government, said the deposed president was "on his way" back, but refused to say how he planned to enter the country or when he expected to arrive. Zelaya's current whereabouts are unclear and Honduras' interim leaders have promised to arrest him if he returns.

"Our president will be in Honduras at some point and a some moment. He is already on his way. God protect him and the people of the Americas who are with him," Rodas told reporters in La Paz, Bolivia.

It would be Zelaya's second attempt to return to Honduras since the military deposed him and flew him out of the country in a June 28 coup. The interim government thwarted his first attempt on July 5 by sending military vehicles to block the airport runway and keep his plane from landing.

Interim President Roberto Micheletti said Wednesday that there were reports that Zelaya planned to enter over the Nicaraguan border Saturday.
Hard to watch the entire border ...
If Zelaya secretly enters Honduras, it could complicate negotiations scheduled for Saturday in Costa Rica. Neither Zelaya or Micheletti are on a Costa Rican government list of people expected to attend the weekend negotiations.

Prospects for finding common ground appeared slim. Micheletti, the former congressional leader who was sworn in to serve out the final months of Zelaya's term, offered Wednesday to step down but said that hinged on guarantees that Zelaya would not return to power.

Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who is mediating the talks, said that proposal is unacceptable. "The restoration of constitutional order must involve the reinstatement of President Manuel Zelaya," Arias said in an interview Thursday radio program Nuestra Voz.

On Tuesday, Zelaya said Hondurans have the right to launch an insurrection against an illegitimate government — referring to a clause in the country's constitution — and warned he would pull out of talks to solve the crisis if the interim government does not quickly leave.

Micheletti said Wednesday that forces he didn't identify "were handing out some guns" to foment rebellion. He reinstated an overnight curfew that had been lifted only days earlier.

Zelaya supporters denied they were armed Thursday as they blocked a road leading out of the capital, Tegucigalpa. Thousands have staged such protests almost daily since Zelaya's ouster. "Check it out: there is not one machete, gun or rifle here. This is a peaceful parch," said peasant leader Rafael Alegria.

If Micheletti were to resign, under Honduran law the presidency would pass to Supreme Court President Jorge Rivera. The Supreme Court backed Zelaya's ouster, ruling that he had violated the law by attempting to hold a vote about whether to write a new constitution.

Many Hondurans viewed the proposed vote as an attempt by Zelaya, an ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, to end a ban on re-election and pave the way for his return to power. Zelaya denies he was seeking another term.

In an interview with La Tribuna newspaper, Rivera said the Supreme Court had ordered Zelaya's arrest two days before the coup — but acknowledged that it never ordered the president expelled from the country. However, Rivera stopped short of calling Zelaya's expulsion illegal, saying the circumstances must be considered. "The Supreme Court ordered Zelaya's capture and authorized the raid on his house so he could be captured," Rivera said. "The expulsion was not in the capture order, and in that sense, we have to analyze if (his expulsion) was the best thing given the necessities of the moment."

He said Zelaya should be arrested if he comes back to Honduras. However, he said the interim government should also consider him granting him amnesty from prosecution as part of the negotiations in Costa Rica. "It should not be dismissed as a possibility. It could happen at the end of the tunnel, once a light is found in the path of dialogue," he said.

Honduran protesters want president back
[Iran Press TV Latest] Protesters calling for the return of ousted President Manuel Zelaya have blocked roads around the Honduran capital, as mediated talks fail in Costa Rica.

The demonstrations involving thousands was set to continue until representatives of Zelaya and the de facto government that has taken charge meet in Costa Rica for further talks on a way out of the impasse.

A first round of discussions, mediated by the Costa Rican President Oscar Arias and held last week, failed to provide any breakthroughs.

Both Zelaya and the interim president Roberto Micheletti claim to be the 'legitimate leader of Honduras'.

Daily protests by Zelaya supporters have taken place, and the United States has led an international downgrading of relations with Honduras amid criticism of the undemocratic shift of power.

Left-wing leaders in Latin America who also back Zelaya have been vociferous in condemning the "coup" against him.

The Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who brought Honduras's ousted foreign minister Patricia Rodas in his plane with him to Bolivia, vowed to fight against "conspiracies" targeting Honduras, Venezuela and Bolivia.

Zelaya has urged Hondurans to stage an insurrection against Micheletti's government. There was no sign of that call being taken up, though, apart from the continuing protests.

India-Pakistan
Decision in plane hijacking case today
A five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court (SC) will announce its verdict on Nawaz Sharif's appeal against his conviction in the plane hijacking case today (Friday).

Headed by Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, the five-member SC bench consists of Justice Nasirul Mulk, Justice Ghulam Rabbani, Justice Mohammad Moosa K Leghari and Justice Sheikh Hakim Ali. Earlier on June 18, the same bench had reserved the verdict after the counsels for both sides had concluded their arguments.

Nawaz was sentenced to life imprisonment twice by the Karachi Anti-Terrorism Court (APC) in April 2000, after the APC found him guilty of refusing to allow a commercial aircraft -- carrying Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf, the army chief at that time, along with 200 other passengers -- to land at the Quaid-e-Azam International Airport, Karachi on October 12, 1999.

Inquiry launched against officials for selling railway track
Psst! Wanna buy the Brooklyn Bridge?
The Supreme Court was informed on Thursday that an inquiry has been launched against railway officials involved in the selling of Mandra-Bhon railway track at throwaway prices.

Pakistan Railways Chairman Samiul Haq Khilji appeared on notice before a three-member bench of the Supreme Court -- consisting of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Jawwad S Khawaja -- which was hearing a suo motu case against the sale of the 75 kilometre-long Mandra-Bhon railway track for a meagre amount of Rs 55 million.

Khilji said the inquiry report against the officials was yet to be finalised. The court adjourned the hearing for three weeks. During the course of hearing, the CJ observed that government property was being ruthlessly misused.

#1  Not a chance. The whole objective of the conspira-liars is to “prove” that salesmanship and sound-bite aggression trump facts, intelligence, and (most importantly) honest work.

Frankly I am not interested in proving anything to these people and their audience. Spaceflight is not for drunks and compulsive liars and it is not for the semi-evolved knuckle-draggers who applaud them.

“Cast not thy pearls before swine”

In some ways, the ultimate objective of spaceflight is to leave such people behind.

NASA lost moon footage, but Hollywood restores it
You just know this will bring out the conspiracy nuts.
NASA could put a man on the moon but didn't have the sense to keep the original video of the live TV transmission. In an embarrassing acknowledgment, the space agency said Thursday that it must have erased the Apollo 11 moon footage years ago so that it could reuse the videotape.

But now Hollywood is coming to the rescue. The studio wizards who restored "Casablanca" are digitally sharpening and cleaning up the ghostly, grainy footage of the moon landing, making it even better than what TV viewers saw on July 20, 1969. They are doing it by working from four copies that NASA scrounged from around the world.

"There's nothing being created; there's nothing being manufactured," said NASA senior engineer Dick Nafzger, who is in charge of the project. "You can now see the detail that's coming out."

The first batch of restored footage was released just in time for the 40th anniversary of the "one giant leap for mankind," and some of the details seem new because of their sharpness. Originally, astronaut Neil Armstrong's face visor was too fuzzy to be seen clearly. The upgraded video of Earth's first moonwalker shows the visor and a reflection in it.

#7  I had never thought about it until I toured NASA and someone brought up the conspiracy theory. The questions weren't really answered by the guide: How far is the moon from the earth? (140,000?) How far is the manned Space Station?(200 miles) Where is the Van Allen radiation belt? He did state the existing computer technology in 1969 would power a pocket calculator today and pointed out it was the Cold War and a matter of national security. I came away with doubts when finding they stayed for two days and a manned flight through the radiation has never been repeated--robots only. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other but I hope if it was a bluff, we aren't called on it when the shuttle is set to retire in 14 months and we have to depend on Russia or China.

#8  Lumpy, Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy website is ground zero for Moon Hoax rebuttals. Go there and find the answers.
Are you aware, for example, that amateur radio operators all over the world were able to track the Apollo missions by direction finding, triangulation, and doppler analysis on their signals? It is physically impossible to fake this, especially when the direction differs slightly for each observer. If amateurs could do this, it is a sure bet every military force and intelligence agency in the world could.

In one way or another, the missions were under independent observation from the time the astronauts got in the capsules until they passed behind the Moon and, exclusive of those short occultations, for the rest of the flight right back to splashdown.
Posted by: Atomic Conspiracy || 07/17/2009 15:58 Comments || Top||

#9  Btw, the ancient Romans knew how far it was to the Moon, 240,000 miles give or take a few.
The Van Allen belts are quite close to the Earth by comparison and they loop right down to the atmosphere near the magnetic poles. They are relatively thin and the astronauts passed through them in a few minutes. Micro-electronics are more, not less, sensitive than living tissue to ionizing radiation. Geostationary communications satellites have to pass through the Van Allen belts to reach their 24 hour orbits (22,000 miles out). They would not work if space were filled with lethal radiation. That is, the very fact that we can see the conspiracist ravings is proof that they are false.

Bulava missile failure adds pressure on Kremlin
The missile, which is intended to become the state of the art Russian submarine armament, the Bulava missile, this week made another failed test launch. The missile is becoming a serious headache both for the Kremlin and the Russian Navy.

The failed launch of 15 July is a serious blow to Russian authorities, which are investing heavily both money and prestige in the project. According to Kommersant, Russia now spends about 40 percent of its investments in new military hardware in the "Bulava" missile and the new submarine Yury Dolgoruky.

The launch, which was made by the Typhoon-class submarine Dmitry Donskoy in the Barents Sea on 15 July was the sixth failed launch out of 12. The last launch, also a failed one, took place in December 2008.

The Bulava missile reportedly failed in the early stage of the launch. A special commission has been established to study the incident, Interfax reports.

Russian defence officials recently stressed that all technical problems with the missile now have been solved and that the Navy can start applying the missile system. That smooth takeover of the missile is yet to come.

The Bulava missile is designed for the Borei class submarines, the fourth generation nuclear subs, the first of which are now being tested in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast. The vessel Yury Dolgoruky will be the flagship in the Russian submarine fleet. Another two vessels of the kind is under construction in the yard.

As BarentsObserver recently reported, the Yury Dolgoruky last month underwent successful testing in the Barents Sea.

Despite the many failed test launches and the huge money invested, Russia is unlikely to abandon the Bulava project. Even before this week's launch, Navy Head Commander Vladimir Vysotky said testing of the missile will be stepped up with four-five launches this year instead of the originally planned two.

#1  It's inconceivable that there isn't something else going on here. The current "Bulava" is supposed to be a re-worked land based ICBM (IIRC). Shouldn't be that hard to make a missile that works.

#3  It would make for a cool ad campaign: Hey, *watch* this!

As for "Shouldn't be that hard...", yeah, it's not like they are trying to lauch an ICMB underwater from a submarine! Oh, wait.

I'm sure they have progressed, but at one time Russian boomers needed to surface to launch their missiles. Originally, the role of the Harpoon was an air-launched missile to kill them on the surface.

Cambodian victims tricked
[Straits Times] A SENIOR security guard at the most notorious Khmer Rouge prison told a genocide tribunal on Thursday that prisoners were told they were being freed as they were led to Cambodia's killing fields. Instead, one by one, they were bludgeoned with oxcart axles and their throats slashed, he testified.

Him Huy, 54, was giving evidence at the trial of his former prison chief Duch, who has admitted responsibility for overseeing the torture and execution of around 15,000 people held at Tuol Sleng prison, also known as S-21, during the late 1970s.

Him Huy told the UN-backed court that he was assigned to protect executioners while they killed up to 100 prisoners per day. 'The prisoners were told that they were being transferred to live in new homes and were never told that they would be executed,' he said.

He said the killings were conducted at night with the detainees shackled and blindfolded as they were taken to the execution grounds at Choeung Ek, 15 kilometres from S-21 prison. 'The executioners were instructed to kill the prisoners by asking them to kneel down near the pits. Then they used oxcart axles to strike the back of their necks and later they used knives to slash their throats,' he said.

Him Huy told the court that although he never saw Duch abuse a prisoner, the prison chief witnessed killings. 'I saw him (Duch) twice at Choeung Ek. He stayed there until all detainees were executed and then he would leave,' Him Huy said.

Woman reports nude photos
[Straits Times] A CHINESE national, whose nude photographs and video clips were posted on the Internet, has come to Malaysia to lodge a police report against her Malaysian former lover. The 33-year-old widow from Guangzhou believed that her ex-lover, from Bahau, was responsible for the act.

She lodged the report in Mantin on Tuesday. 'I hope the police will take action and give me justice,' she told China Press, adding that she would not have come if the man had not gotten her daughter, aged seven, involved.

'He uploaded my daughter's photographs on the Internet and for this, I will not compromise,' she said. She has also returned four gifts - a purse, bra, crystal bracelet and a decorative mould - that the man gave her.

An hour after a report was lodged, police recorded the man's statement and seized a computer and some components from his home.

The woman came to know the man through a friendship website three years ago. They then became Internet lovers. Last year, she came to Malaysia to visit the man and stayed for a month. The nude photos and video clips of the woman began to emerge on the Internet in April after the relationship turned sour.
