Boy, 11, charged with killing 8-year-old girl after argument about puppies
[WASHINGTONPOST] An argument between two children over puppies turned tragic Saturday when an 11-year-old boy allegedly killed his 8-year-old neighbor with a shotgun, according to authorities in Jefferson County, Tenn.
Pop should be held accountable for not controlling his weapon.
The 11-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in the girl’s death, Jefferson County Sheriff Bud McCoig told The Washington Post. Authorities aren’t releasing the names of either child, but Latasha Dyer told ABC affiliate WATE that her daughter, MaKayla, was killed.
An 11-year-old is incapable of first-degree murder. At that age he's incapable of understanding the consequences of his actions.
“She was a precious little girl,” Dyer said through tears in an on-air interview with WATE. “She was a mommy’s girl. No matter how bad of a mood you were in, she could always make you smile.”
Little children should be protected from such things, but the responsibility is with the 11-year-old's dad.
You're assuming something...
Each of the children had a puppy, the sheriff said. The 11-year-old “wanted to see the 8-year-old’s, and she said no, and then he went and retrieved a gun,” McCoig said.
Not the sort of thing that drives a rational adult to reach for his rosco. Why try to make the child responsible?
The boy fired the 12-gauge shotgun from inside his house, striking the girl as she stood in her yard, the sheriff said. The gun, which was stored in a closet without locks, belongs to the boy’s father, McCoig said.
The moral of this story: lock your weapons. My son's a state policeman. He keeps his pistol in a locked safe. A few years ago one of his colleagues didn't and his child shot somebody while waving it around. The dad was held responsible. He's not longer a trooper and I believe he did jail time.
When first responders and police arrived at the scene Saturday night, they found the girl “lying on the ground with a gunshot to the chest,” McCoig said. She was taken to an area hospital, where she died from her wounds.
A shotgun wound from inside the house into the next yard. Ten or fifteen yards?
On Monday, a judge ordered the boy to be held in a juvenile facility pending his next court hearing Oct. 28; the case could later be transferred to adult court, McCoig said.
It would be a gross miscarriage of justice if it was. But this is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, so it might be.
MaKayla will be interred Thursday at the Haun Cemetery in Luttrell, Tenn. Her family will be receiving guests at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Cooke-Campbell Mortuary in Maynardville, and her funeral will be held at 7 p.m.
Her poor parents!

Christian group says the world will be permanently 'annihilated' on Wednesday
[RAWSTORY] While our planet may have survived September's "blood moon", it will be permanently destroyed on Wednesday, 7 October, a Christian organization has warned.
I guess I don't have to cut the grass then, right?
The eBible Fellowship, an online affiliation headquartered near Philadelphia, has based its prediction of an October obliteration on a previous claim that the world would end on 21 May 2011. While that claim proved to be false, the organization is confident it has the correct date this time.
Actually it wasn't false. This is what the world looks like after it ends. Think of it as Obamaworld.
"According to what the Bible is presenting it does appear that 7 October will be the day that God has spoken of: in which, the world will pass away," said Chris McCann, the leader and founder of the fellowship, an online gathering of Christians headquartered in Philadelphia. "It'll be gone forever. Annihilated."
"We'll be dead, Jim!"
McCann said that, according to his interpretation of the Bible, the world will be obliterated "with fire".
I thought it was being annihilated with politix, but what do I know?
The blood moon -- a lunar eclipse combined with a "super moon" -- occurred without event on 27 September. This was despite some predictions that it would herald the beginning of the apocalypse. Certain religious leaders had said the blood moon would trigger a chain of events that could see our planet destroyed in as little as seven years time.
I think it ended December 21st, 2012, too. This is the inside of the black hole. Or maybe it's Groundhog Day.

Britain
U.K. Home Secretary Takes Tough Stance on Immigration at Party Conference
[WSJ] U. K. Home Secretary Theresa May said high levels of immigration make a "cohesive society" impossible and had "close to zero" net economic benefit, in a speech seeking to establish her tough-on-immigration credentials amid a jostling for future leadership of the governing Conservative Party.

While the U.K. should fulfill its "moral duty to help people in desperate need" there is "a limit to the amount of immigration any country can and should take," she said in a speech on Tuesday to members of the Conservative Party, who were meeting in this northwest English city for their main annual conference.

Ms. May's speech immediately drew criticism from industry and opposition politicians, who said she was putting the interests of internal party politics ahead of the interests of the country.

Ms. May's comments appear to mark a tougher stance on immigration than previous government remarks. Concerns about immigration in the U.K. have fuelled support for the U.K. Independence Party, which won more than 10% of the vote in the May general election with its tough-on-immigration message.

It is the center-right party's first conference since Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
fired the starting gun on a leadership race earlier this year when he said he wouldn't run for another term in office. He named Ms. May as a potential successor, along with U.K. Treasury chief George Osborne and London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Mr. Osborne, a close ally of Mr. Cameron's who has steered the government's plan to slash public spending, appears to be the current favorite, commentators say. In his speech to the party conference Monday, he made a play for the political center ground by positioning the party as the champion of the worker.

But the contest is likely to be at least a couple of years away, and Mr. Osborne faces potentially stiff competition, including from Mr. Johnson. The mayor, in his speech Tuesday, appeared to deliver a shot across the bow to the Treasury chief by saying the government when making welfare cuts needs to "protect the hardest working and lowest paid."

Farhatullah Babar urges Senate to reject notion of 'sacred cows'
[DAWN] Pakistan People’s Party Senator Farhatullah Babar said the Senate must send a strong signal that it demands across the board accountability and rejects the notion of sacred cows.

Taking part in the discussion during the Senate session on Tuesday, Babar said that the slogan of accountability will sound hollow without across the board accountability of every one by rejecting the notion of ‘holy cows’ whether in the security establishment or in the judiciary and without an effective Right to Information (RTI) law.

He said “as long as the sacred cows syndrome persists, accountability will remain a pipe dream”. “The notion of some institutions carrying out accountability through internal mechanisms was a myth the fallacy of which has been more than exposed,” he added.

Israeli private team contracts with SpaceX to send a probe to the moon! Google X-Prize
Israeli Google Lunar XPrize team is the first to sign a launch agreement for a private mission to the moon on a SpaceX Falcon 9.

SpaceIL Becomes First Google Lunar XPRIZE Team to Produce a Verified Launch Contract for a 2017 Mission, Using a SpaceX Falcon 9 Launcher via Spaceflight Industries

JERUSALEM, Israel (October 7, 2015) - At a press conference held in Jerusalem today, alongside Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, and Bob Weiss, vice chairman and president of XPRIZE, SpaceIL announced a significant milestone in its race to the moon: securing a "ticket to the moon" on a SpaceX Falcon 9 launcher, with a mission scheduled for the second half of 2017. With this, SpaceIL becomes the first team to produce a verified launch contract in the US$30 million Google Lunar XPRIZE competition, and aims to accomplish not only the first Israeli mission to the moon, but also the world's first private lunar mission.

"We are proud to officially confirm receipt and verification of SpaceIL's launch contract, positioning them as the first and only Google Lunar XPRIZE team to demonstrate this important achievement, thus far," said Bob Weiss, vice chairman and president of XPRIZE. "The magnitude of this achievement cannot be overstated, representing an unprecedented and monumental commitment for a privately-funded organization, and kicks off an exciting phase of the competition in which the other 15 teams now have until the end of 2016 to produce their own verified launch contracts. It gives all of us at XPRIZE and Google the great pride to say, 'the new space race is on!'"

To win the Google Lunar XPRIZE, a privately funded team must successfully place an unmanned spacecraft on the moon's surface that explores at least 500 meters and transmits high-definition video and images back to Earth, before the mission deadline of December 31, 2017.

"Only three countries have 'soft-landed' a rover on the surface of the moon: the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China. Now the notion of the small state of Israel being added to this exclusive list look more promising than ever," said SpaceIL CEO Eran Privman. " Last year we made significant strides toward landing on the moon, both in terms of project financing and in terms of the engineering design and now, we are thrilled to finally secure our launch agreement. This takes us one huge step closer to realize our vision of recreating an 'Apollo effect' in Israel: to inspire a new generation to pursue Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM)."

Signing the launch agreement was made possible due to the completion of an additional fundraising round led by the two major contributors of SpaceIL: Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Family Foundation and Morris Kahn's Kahn Foundation.

SpaceIL has purchased launch services from Spaceflight Industries; an American space company who recently purchased a SpaceX Falcon 9 launcher and will manifest SpaceIL's spacecraft as a co-lead spot, which will sit in a designated capsule inside the launcher, among a cluster of secondary payloads. Once the capsule separates from the launcher, it will automatically release the spacecraft, which will use advanced navigation sensors to guide it to the lunar surface, with engineers in a mission control room standing by to remotely send commands and corrections as needed.

"We're excited to work closely with the SpaceIL team to help them realize their mission of getting to the moon", said Curt Blake, president of Spaceflight's launch business. "It's very gratifying to play an integral part in SpaceIL's quest to win the Google Lunar XPRIZE."

Also today, SpaceIL unveiled a new and improved design of its spacecraft, completed by SpaceIL engineers with consultation from world-renowned Israeli industrial designer, Alex Padwa, regarding the spacecraft's exterior. The first physical components of the new model are already starting to arrive at the SpaceIL integration lab.

Science & Technology
Nuclear is death
h/t Jerry Pournelle
The exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear plant, which was evacuated in 1986 after a devastating explosion and fire, has become a wildlife haven on a par with heavily-protected nature reserves, scientists have found.

A detailed survey of the huge forested area around the stricken plant has revealed that it is teeming with large animals such elk, roe deer, red deer, wild boar and wolves despite being contaminated with radioactive fallout.

The scientists found no evidence to support earlier studies suggesting that wildlife in the region had suffered from the radiation released after the Chernobyl accident of 1986 which sent plumes of radioactive emissions across much of northern Europe, causing radiation "hotspots" within the exclusion zone.

#1  russia has been quite keen on putting this story out for some reason

if you search YouTube for *chernobyl* you will find they have have stacked the search results with a propaganda video about how wonderful the wildlife is and how chernobyl is no problem

but the health effects of radiation are well known and have been for decades.

And chernobyl was a big deal. after chernobyl the rates of down syndrome births as far away as Ireland increased

Russia rotated the workers around and did not follow up on health studies so the true numbers of cancers to show in later years would not be counted. The local people of Pripyat were evacuated and dispersed.

in short there is a snow job *still* going on trying to hide the death toll and after effects

the truth is that fossil fuels are the greenest, cleanest, most efficient fuels we have. the problem is the Islamofascists control the biggest reserves

Iran displays supercavitating torpedo and semi-submersible
Note to mods: you might want to add Russia to the "Syria-Lebanon-Iran" File under tag. Also, IRGC to the list under Organizations.
Iran displayed its Hoot high-speed rocket-torpedo for the first time during an exhibition by the naval wing of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGN) on 3 October.

The imagery confirmed long-held suspicions that the Hoot is identical to the VA-111 Shkval supercavitating torpedo that was developed by the Soviet Union. It has the same eight jet nozzles at the rear and four stabilization fins that pop out of the torpedo's body.

Leaked IRGC documents published by the Federation of American Scientists in 2009 showed the Russians had demonstrated the Shkval at the Iranian port of Jask in early 2004. One document dated 3 April 2008 noted that the IRGC had contracted Iran's Aerospace Industrial Organization to design, produce, and test an engine for the Hoot. It remains unclear if any progress has been made since then.

The IRGC also displayed a semi-submersible torpedo boat called the Zolfaqar. Such vessels are not considered to be true submarines because they need to keep a snorkel above the water to feed oxygen to their engines. They are nevertheless still difficult to detect using radar when submerged.

The IRGC is believed to have had semi-submersibles since at least 2002, when The Washington Times reported it had received two Taedong-B and three Taedong-C craft from North Korea.

Don Surber: Ben Carson leads on Oregon shooting
[DONSURBER.BLOGSPOT] Doctor Ben Carson's response to the gunman who killed 10 people, including himself, at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, put mine to shame.

The gunman asked people if they were a Christian, and then he shot those who said yes. Guess what? People still said yes after that. They are martyrs.

And that is what Carson responded to. Not the pointless debate on gun control (which we already have) but rather on the heart of the matter: Being a Christian.

I am a Christian.

Not a particularly good one.

But one, nevertheless. I like to think I would have said hell yeah.

#1  I would have said no. Remember, Peter himself denied Jesus three times before the cock crowed because it wasn't his time. Why let some whacko determine when your time is going to be? What difference will it make and, even if it makes a difference, there is no time under circumstances like that to think about it. I choose life, not senseless martyrdom.

#2  Often, there are some brave souls who get it and just charge at these MFs. There's one fellow in the hospital in Oregon right now. There's a memorial in Pennsylvania for the fighters on Flight 93. Imagine if, time after time, these whole rooms of full of adults just did that.

Stop being goddamned victims and stand up for yourselves. If nothing else, die fighting.
