Defense will claim Jackson killed self
[Arab News] A prosecutor says defense lawyers for Michael Jackson's doctor will claim at his involuntary manslaughter trial that the singer killed himself.

The statement by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney David Walgren came at a hearing Wednesday where a lawyer for Dr. Conrad Murray clashed with the prosecutor over who should test residue from two syringes found in Jackson's bedroom.

Defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan said a huge amount of the anesthetic Propofol was found in Jackson's body but his client has said he gave him only 25 milligrams of the drug. Walgren suggested the defense will claim Jackson killed himself by injecting more of the drug into himself. A preliminary hearing in the case begins Jan. 4.

Honest TSA I Spilled Tobasco on my Johnson
A 50 year old Floridian has been arrested after he exposed himself on a flight from Salt Lake City to Lewiston, ID. The man reportedly started masturbating next to a 17 year old girl on the plane, who then moved seats to get away from the pervert.

Upon arrival at the airport, the girl told her father, who contacted the Transportation Security Administration. When TSA officials contacted the local police department, the man was placed under arrest on suspicion of "misdemeanor indecent exposure".

According to police, the man claims he spilled Tabasco sauce on his crotch, causing him to expose himself and rub violently to reduce the burning and itching.

Of course, anyone that has actually seen a bottle of Tabasco knows that the hot stuff comes out one drip at a time, so spilling enough to set your genitals on fire is a really lousy excuse. He'll get to use his Tabasco excuse in front of a judge soon, who'll have to decide whether this really is a case of inflight masturbation or something innocent.

#4  There's a rude country & western song in there somewhere.

Let's see. A cowboy rides into town, gets himself some lunch and spills "Snake Bite Hot Sauce" on himself. Nothing works to reduce the fire, so he gets the idea of visiting a local whore-lady. It doesn't help him much, but it gets her all fired up, and so soon, between the two, everybody in town has their crotch on fire.

But the day is saved by bisexual Juanita, who isn't bothered by spicy hot food. She goes around town "sucking out the poison".

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Great Moments in Socialized Medicine
A Swedish man was forced to have his penis amputated after waiting more than a year to learn he had cancer.

The man, who is in his sixties, first visited a local clinic in Blekinge in southern Sweden in September 2009 for treatment of a urinary tract infection, the local Blekinge Läns Tidning (BLT) reported.

When he returned in March 2010 complaining of foreskin irritation, the doctor on duty at the time diagnosed the problem as a simple case of inflammation. After three weeks passed without the prescribed treatment alleviating the man's condition, he was instructed to seek further treatment at Blekinge Hospital.

But it took five months before he was able to schedule an appointment at the hospital. When he finally met with doctors at the hospital, the man was informed he had cancer and his penis would have to be removed.

It remains unclear if the man would have been able to keep his penis had the cancer been detected sooner.

The matter has now been reported to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) under Sweden's Lex Maria laws, the informal name used to refer to regulations governing the reporting of injuries or incidents in the Swedish health care system.

#5  The reason you wait five hours in an emergency room is because all the other 'emergency' rooms have closed in one hospital after another. When the redistributionists declared that no one could be turned away yet provided no fiscal compensation, the only hospitals which could fiscally keep them running were state and county facilities at the taxpayers' expense. So, now instead of the patient load being distributed among many, every one goes to the same emergency room and we wait. The poor still end up at the same state and county facilities they were shuffled off to before the great 'feel good' Socialist moment, but now they too get to wait with the resultant complications. Of course our Congresscritters are exempted with facilities set aside for their care. "Do you know who I am?"

Africa Subsaharan
Ivory Coast UN ambassador warns of genocide risk
[Bangla Daily Star] Ivory Coast's newly appointed ambassador to the UN has warned the country is "on the brink of genocide".

Youssoufou Bamba said there had been large scale violation of human rights
... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you...
as a result of the ongoing political unrest.

Laurent Gbagbo is refusing to step down despite his rival, Alassane Ouattara, being internationally accepted as the presidential election winner.

The UN has accused state media of inciting hatred against it.

Mr Gbagbo has said Mr Ouattara's victory in November was illegitimate. Both men have been sworn in as president.

Mr Bamba, who was appointed by Mr Ouattara, was formally welcomed at the UN's New York headquarters on Wednesday, solidifying UN support for Mr Ouattara.

At a presser, Mr Bamba said Mr Ouattara had been elected in a "free, fair, transparent, democratic election".

"To me the debate is over, now you are talking about how and when Mr Gbagbo will leave office," he said.

Mr Bamba said Mr Ouattara's main concern now was the "massive violation of human rights" in the past few weeks.

He said 173 people had been killed "only because they want to demonstrate, they want to speak out, they want to defend the will of the people".

3 killed as Jubo League men clash in Jhenidah
[Bangla Daily Star] Three activists of Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
were killed in a factional clash at Pabahati village under Sadar upazila yesterday evening.

The dear departed were identified as Alam Ali, 41, son of Abed Ali of Pabahati village, Bazlur Rahman, 28, son of Imrul Hossain of Bhutiargati village and Sohan, 32, son of Golam Maula of Porahati village under Sadar upazila.

Alam keeled over dead while Bazlur and Sohan gave up the ghost at Jhenidah Sadar Hospital.

Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Bahar of Sadar Police Station and locals said two rival groups, one led by Juba league leader Jahangir Hossain and the other by Masudur Rahman, engaged in the fierce clash at about 7:30pm to establish supremacy in the area. Both groups used sharp and lethal weapons during the clash.

Alam of Jahangir group and Bazlur Rahman and Sohan of Masud group were chopped to death, witnesses said.

The clash started when the two groups confronted each other at Pobahati during their campaign for rival councillor candidates in the coming Pourasava election.

Drug gangs employ thousands of newly unemployed.

Thousands more flee.

Border towns return to some sustainable level of population, closer to what they looked like in the early 80's than they do now.

India-Pakistan
Protest held against blasphemy law, FSC
[Pak Daily Times] A protest was held in the federal capital on Thursday in front of the Parliament House against the country's blasphemy law and parallel judicial structures, especially the Federal Shariat Court with regards to its recent judgement against the Women's Protection Act (WPA).

Representatives of civil society, minorities and concerned citizens of Islamabad gathered under the auspices of the Insani Haqooq Ittehaad (IHI) to denounce the Federal Shariat Court's recent decision on the Women's Protection Act, and demanded the abolishment of the FSC and parallel judicial systems - Council of Islamic Ideology, Federal Shariat Court, jirgas, panchayets, and the repeal of all laws that were discriminatory to women and minorities, including the blasphemy law and Hudood laws. They also called for the immediate dismissal of Maulana Sherani as the chair of the Council of Islamic Ideology.

The protesters were a diverse mix of civil society organisations, women's rights groups, human rights
... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you...
activists, political workers, students' organisations and minority communities from Islamabad. They raised slogans for a secular and democratic Pakistain and insisted that the government must work towards the realisation of the democratic, secular, and peaceful vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's Pakistain, a vision he clearly articulated in his speech on August 11, 1947 when he stated that religion would have no role to play in the business of the state.

The protesters rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud and demanded repeal of laws that discriminate against women, such as Hudood laws and qisas and diyat laws. They also reminded the government that the state had a due diligence duty to ensure protection for women, minorities and other vulnerable sections of society and should not bow down to political pressures and blackmailing by religious parties.

The demonstration was part of a countrywide campaign of human rights organisations and activists against the FSC decision, in support of its abolishing and repeal of the blasphemy laws.

The protesters also demanded the government stand up to the retrogressive religious forces in the country and not capitulate to their blackmail. They called upon the government to ensure the rights of religious minorities by immediately releasing Aasia Bibi and repealing the blasphemy law.

This protest was the beginning of a national campaign that civil society organisations are starting in all parts of Pakistain from Thursday. Similar protests are planned in all provinces.

Iraq
ID49b earmarked for Missan marshes
MISSAN / Aswat al-Iraq: The Missan Provincial Council allocated more than 49 billion Iraqi dinars for the development of the province's marshlands within appropriations reserved for the reconstruction of this area for the year 2011, a local official said on Thursday.

Jasseb Kadhem Himdan, the chairman of the council's marshes development committee, pointed out that the ministry, during 2010, appropriated the sum of 70 billion dinars to refurbish the Missan wetlands, adding some 178 projects were carried out in the spheres of housing, agriculture, water resources, education, roads, electricity, water, sanitary sewage, health, communications and social development.

The marshes in southern Iraq, the largest and oldest in the world, play a key environmental role in housing of indigenous and migrant birds. They stand over 15,000-25,000 kilometers.

With a population of about 500,000 people, the marshlands shrank by one-tenth during the former regime's time after all river courses were altered and dams were built to cut them into parts, a matter that prompted most of their inhabitants to emigrate.
One of the great and barely recognized stories of the reconstruction of Iraq is the restoration of the marsh lands. Saddam try to destroy the marshes to punish the people who lived there, and in doing so he created an ecological and environmental catastrophe. The good people of Iraq, with American and British assistance, have been restoring these marshes since their liberation. Not that you'll get the progressive types to care, of course.
One of our first moves after the 2003 invasion was to re-open the spigots feeding water into the marshlands. While there were concerns about pollution, it was amazing how quickly the flora and fauna started to return.

Southeast Asia
Christmas decoration gets restaurant in trouble
A special Christmas promotion aimed at foreigners at a Maldivian restaurant got the restaurant owners into deep trouble.

Islam is the official religion in Maldives and constitutionally, there is only place for Sunni Muslims; practice of other religions is prohibited. Display of other religious symbols attracts police action.

In this case, the restaurant was decorated for Christmas with items related to the celebration.

This led to protests from religious groups such as the Adhaalath Party and the Islamic Foundation of the Maldives, which led to the arrest of one restaurant employee, the independent Maldivian newspaper Minivan News reported.

“Some people gathered and protested against the decorations, because it was like celebrating Christmas,” police spokesman Ahmed Shiyam told AFP. Mr. Shiyam added one restaurant employee was taken in for questioning on Tuesday and later released.

The offending streamers were quickly removed.

Thai court jails 84 'Yellow Shirt' protesters
[Pak Daily Times] A Thai court on Thursday jugged 84 supporters of the 'Yellow Shirt' royalist movement for storming a television station in 2008 in protest at a government allied with former premier Thaksin Shinawatra. They were handed prison sentences of between six months and two-and-a-half years by Bangkok's Criminal Court, mostly for illegal assembly and trespassing.

The August 2008 incident at the National Broadcasting Service of Thailand state television station was one in series that year involving the Yellow Shirts, formally known as the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD). The demonstrations peaked with the seizure of two Bangkok airports in late November and early December 2008, leaving more than 300,000 travellers stranded in Thailand for a week or more and causing crippling economic damage. The Yellows, who claim allegiance to the throne, are powerful players in Thailand's colour-coded politics.

They are backed by the Bangkok-based elite and are the arch-rivals of the mostly poor and working class "Red Shirts", who have held their own series of mass protests, notably in April and May this year in the heart of the capital. Many of the Red Shirts' leaders are in jail facing terrorism charges for their roles in the Bangkok demonstrations, which left more than 90 people dead.

Iconic face of Rosie the Riveter poster dies
A Michigan factory worker used as the unwitting model for the wartime Rosie the Riveter poster whose inspirational "We Can Do It!" message became an icon of the feminist movement has died.

Geraldine Doyle died Sunday, said a spokesman for the Hospice House of Mid Michigan. She was 86.

Ms Doyle did not realise she had a famous face until she was flipping through a magazine in 1982 and spotted a reproduction of the poster, her daughter told The New York Times.

But while she recognised her face under the red and white polka dot bandanna, the strong arm held up in a fist was not hers.

"She didn't have big, muscular arms," Ms Gregg said.

"She was 5-foot-10 and very slender. She was a glamour girl. The arched eyebrows, the beautiful lips, the shape of the face - that's her."

Ms Doyle was just 17 when she took at job at a metal pressing plant near Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1942.

She quit about two weeks later after learning that another woman had badly injured her hand on the job - she was worried she would lose the ability to play the cello, her daughter said.

She was there, however, when a United Press International photographer came to the factory while documenting the contribution of women to the war effort.

A picture of Ms Doyle was later used by J Howard Miller, a graphic artist at Westinghouse, for the poster which was aimed at deterring strikes and absenteeism.

The poster was not widely seen until the 1980s when it was embraced by the feminist movement as a potent symbol of women's empowerment.

The iconic image now graces a US postage stamp and has been used to sell lunch boxes, aprons, mugs, t-shirts and figurines.

The term "Rosie the Riveter" stems from a 1942 song honouring the women who took over critical factory jobs when men went off to war.

Another Michigan woman, Rose Will Monroe, was the best-known "Rosie" after being featured in a wartime promotional film about female factory workers.

Ms Doyle was quick to correct people who thought she was the original Rosie the Riveter, Ms Gregg told the Lansing State Journal.

"She would say that she was the 'We Can Do It!" girl," Ms Gregg said. "She never wanted to take anything away from the other Rosies."

US Navy introduces smoking ban on submarines
[AFP] - US Navy moves to ban its crews from smoking aboard submarines starting Friday.

A Pentagon study found the risks of second-hand smoke were severe in those highly confined spaces. Submarine Forces Commander Vice Admiral John Donnelly ordered the ban aboard 73 US subs, citing health concerns.

About 40 percent of the 13,000 US submarine sailors smoke -- double the US national average.

US submarine sailors are also bracing for another major change with women being allowed to serve aboard submarines for the first time starting late next year or in early 2012.

#4  When I was a swabbie (66-70) there was no smoking except at designated times, places and preferably on deck (Out in the open air) as I never smoked, I generaly Ignored the whistling of the Bo'sun's Pipe and the announcement "The smoking Lamp is now Lit", so this is NOT new.

#5  I too am surprised that they hadn't already banned smoking.

#6  I admit, it probably is overdue for submariners, but if they try that for the Carriers, get ready for lots of report chits.
