U.S. Could Delay Troop Withdrawal from Afghanistan
[AnNahar] U.S. commanders are weighing a delay in the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan after the country's protracted election set back preparations for the transition, Washington defense officials said Wednesday.

Under the current plan outlined by President Barack Obama
The point I was making was not that Grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesnât. But she is a typical white person...
, the U.S. force will dwindle to 9,800 troops by January along with roughly 2,000 allied forces, and all American soldiers will be out by the end of 2016.

But after a months-long electoral dispute that postponed the signing of a crucial U.S.-Afghan security agreement, there are questions about the readiness of Afghan forces and whether allied governments will have arrangements in place for their troops to deploy by 2015, officials said.

Pushing back the timeline is "an option" that is being looked at, but no decision has been made, said one Pentagon official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"They are looking at the troop numbers to see if they can hit their mark," the official told AFP.

The new head of the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
-led force in Afghanistan, General John Campbell, and other senior officers are reviewing whether a larger force needs to stay in place longer than initially planned, officials said.

"Right now he (Campbell) is comfortable with the current plan and timeline," said another military official who asked not to be named.

But "there are variables which need to be considered, such as the delay in the elections," as well as a new Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
, and the performance of Afghan forces, the official said.

"He is looking at risks to mission and risks to force and trying to find the right balance," he said.

Obama has vowed to end America's military presence in Afghanistan and a recommendation from top brass to alter the troop drawdown pace could present the U.S. president with a difficult dilemma.

Lieutenant General Joseph Anderson, the number-two ranking officer in Afghanistan and head of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) joint command, separately told news hounds that Afghan efforts to prepare for the end of ISAF's combat mission had been set back by the drawn-out election.

"The government of Afghanistan, the current president (Ghani), is concerned about the time they've lost" because the bilateral security agreement with Washington was only recently signed, Anderson said via video link from Kabul.

"It's cost them a lot of money," said Anderson, referring to the effect of the delay on Afghan forces. "It's cost them time to get their systems in place. That's everything from pay rolls to contracts, to budgets, to logistical forecasting."

Officials said it was too soon for Campbell to submit his recommendation for troop numbers to U.S. Central Command and to NATO because he had taken over his post only about two months ago and Ghani was sworn in as president in September.

At its peak, the U.S. force rose to more than 100,000 in Afghanistan, and there are now 27,000 troops deployed.

#1  But didn't The Lightbringer clearly say the troops would be out by 2014? Obviously a case of the Republicans thwarting his actions.
Or Bush's fault.
Or those that didn't vote.
Or global worming.

HRW slams use of antipersonnel mines
[Libya Herald] Zintani forces defending Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
International Airport are being implicated in the deployment of anti-personnel mines, banned by an international treaty to which Libya is not yet a signatory.

Human Rights Watch
... During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, HRW received a pledge from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, of which George Soros is Chairman, for general support totaling $100,000,000. The grant is being paid in installments of $10,000,000 over ten years.Through June 30, 2013, HRW had received $30,000,000 towards the fulfillment of the pledge....
today produced a report in which it said there was credible evidence that one or more militia groups had used antipersonnel mines during the fight for the airport. The use of these devices constitutes a war crime.

HRW said that it had not been possible to work out which groups had been responsible for laying the deadly weapons. It had contacted the mayor of Zintan, Mustafa Al-Barouni who had denied Zintani forces had used either anti-personnel or anti-vehicle land mines during the battle.

HRW urged Libya Dawn
...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar...
forces, which now control the burnt-out remains of Tripoli International Airport to destroy surviving stockpiles and make sure that all remaining planted mines were cleared according to international standards.

"The use of antipersonnel land mines by any party anywhere is unacceptable" said Stephen Goose, director of HRW's Arms Division, " All parties should order their forces to stop using land mines and destroy any stocks immediately".

Goose and HRW co-founded the International Campaign to Ban Land Mines (ICBL), an initiative recognised by the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. Libya is not party to the mine-ban treaty which led to the award.

HRW pointed out however, that at the UN on Monday, Libya had backed a non-binding General Assembly resolution supporting the ban. However the UN had been told that the Thinni government was not yet able to sign up to the treaty.

HRW said that they had been told last Saturday by a senior United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
Mine Action Service (UNMAS) official in Libya that the UN has no "confirmed information" on the mine use at Tripoli Airport.

In addition, representatives of international mine action operators working in Libya told HRW that they could not comment on the use of mines at Tripoli Airport as their staff have been unable to access the site.

HRW said however that the commander of a Misratan engineering unit had told them that in just over two months, his men had cleared around 600 mostly antipersonnel land mines, mostly apparently made in Brazil.

HRW has warned that those who commit or are associated with the commission of war crimes, are subject to prosecution either in Libya or the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
in the Hague.

Libya parliament rejects dissolution ruling
Bet no one saw that coming...
[Iran Press TV] Libya's parliament has rejected a ruling by the country's Constitutional Court that said the legislative body should be dissolved, saying the decision has been made under threat from militias in the capital, Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Libyan politician Adam Abu Sakhra on Thursday read out an official statement by the country's parliament, known as the House of Representatives, which noted that the decision by the court had been taken "under the threat of arms" because Tripoli is "ruled by outlawed militias."

"The House of Representatives rejects the verdict under these conditions and says it is still functioning, as is the government," the statement added.

It also noted that the parliament had been elected on June 25 by the Libyan people in "free and credible" polls and therefore would not be invalidated.

The court's decision to nullify the parliament's constitutionality came amid the continued operation of another legislature in the capital.

Under the Libyan constitution, the legislative body should operate from the capital or Benghazi. The parliament, however, is currently based in the city of Tobruk. Libya's government and the parliament buildings moved to Tobruk after an gang from the town of Misrata seized the capital and most government institutions in August. The new rulers in Tripoli have set up the rival legislature.

Arabia
15 seize Saudi woman from Yemen care home
[ARABNEWS] Fifteen bully boys, suspected to be Houthis, stormed the Al-Amal Care Home and kidnapped a Saudi woman at gunpoint, according to security officials in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa on Thursday.

The officials said that it is not known where Huda Al-Niran is being held. Al-Niran is the woman who made international headlines last year when she bravely ran away to Yemen with the man she wanted to marry, Arafat Al-Qadi.

Kadi, a Yemeni, was cleared by a local court of kidnapping her. However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
Al-Niran was placed in a home until her case is resolved. She is applying for refugee status.

Fatima Jarallah, the director of the care home, said 15 men stormed the facility. She said the gunnies attacked the guards, took their weapons and broke down doors to kidnap Al-Niran.

The Death Eaters had visited the center earlier in the morning and said they were representatives of Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to Americaâ¢, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
committees, said Jarallah.

The police in Yemen are currently investigating.

Arab News reported last month that Al-Niran had allegedly tried to commit suicide at the home. Her lawyer Abdul Raqib Al-Qadi said at the time that her confinement at the home was against international laws that grant expatriates seeking asylum in a foreign country the right to move freely.

Tarique: Bangabandhu should be charged with sedition
[Dhaka Tribune] BNP's Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman
...the elder son of former President of Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam, and Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He is the Senior Vice Chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). His nickname is Pino. There are allegations that Pino took a rakeoff from every foreign investment into the country while Mom was in office...
has come up with yet another suggestion that Bangabandhu should be charged with sedition for taking oath as the president of independent Bangladesh as a "Pak national."

Addressing a programme in London on Wednesday, Tarique said: "I have heard that a sedition case has been filed against me for highlighting real history. But, I think such a case should be filed against Sheikh Mujib. He returned to Bangladesh with a Pak passport after around 25 days of independence. So, he should be sued to resolve the question that has arisen over his oath taking as a Pak national."

Pakistan envoy summoned over minister's comments
[Dhaka Tribune] The Foreign Ministry summoned the Acting High Commissioner of Pakistain in Dhaka yesterday, to formally convey the government's disappointment over comments made by a Pak minister about the war crimes verdict on Motiur Rahman Nizami
...During the liberation war of 1971, Nizami formed the Al-Badr Force and acted as its supreme commander. The Al-Badr militia took active part in rape, extortion, looting and killing of Bangladeshis who supported the liberation, including a pre-planned massacre on December 14, 1971, when the Al-Badr militia along with Pakistan Army rounded up hundreds of doctors, professors, writers, and other Bengali intellectuals, and executed them...
Ahmad Hussain Dayo was called to the ministry to be apprised of the government's position on comments made by Pakistain Home Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. He wears a wig, but you probably guessed that. since hair doesn't grow naturally in that shape or texture...
regarding the International Crimes Tribunal, Bangladesh verdict, said a Foreign Ministry blurb.

Nisar Ali Khan said last week it was highly unfortunate that almost 45 years after that tragic chain of events, the Bangladeshi government still seemed to be living in the past and ignoring the time-tested virtue of forgive and forget.

The Pak politician said he believed the government of Bangladesh had misused the process of law as a political tool against the Jamaat leader.

Terming the comments unwarranted and inappropriate, the additional foreign secretary (bilateral) said the comments amounted to directly interfering with the internal affairs of Bangladesh, the blurb said.

Vested quarters in Pakistain were advised to mind their own business and set their own house in order rather than try to interfere with matters which fall within Bangladesh's domestic jurisdiction.

The additional secretary pointed out that the trials enjoyed the support of the people in Bangladesh and of the wider international community to break the culture of impunity for crimes against humanity and genocide committed in 1971.

The government of Pakistain was requested to take serious note of all these issues, the blurb said.

Noting the holding of demonstrations and provocative statements by Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
in Pakistain, the additional secretary further stated that Bangladesh expects that as a friendly neighbour, Pakistain will refrain from such activities as may hurt the sentiments of the people of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh, in December last year, strongly protested a resolution adopted by the Pakistain National Assembly on the death sentence of another Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Abdul Quader Molla.

Nizami was sentenced to death on October 29 for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

Kamaruzzaman's execution depends on verdict release
[Dhaka Tribune] Fixing the date for the execution of death-row war criminal Mohammad Kamaruzzaman entirely depends on the release of a copy of the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death penalty for the Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. leader.

The government will execute the verdict and fix the date for carrying out the execution only after the Supreme Court releases its judgement and due processes are followed afterwards.

Britain
UK: Pro-Israel, anti-Islamic State doctor investigated for "Islamophobia"
h/t Gates of Vienna
A London doctor is being investigated by the General Medical Council (GMC) for alleged Islamophobia after posting criticism of ISIS and support for Israel on his private Facebook page. He was reported to the council by Faisel Alam, who described himself on the complaint form as a "concerned member of the public" but in reality has links to both Islamic and leftist organisations, as well as the Council itself.
So first, don't worry how qualified and competent the doc is. And second let's of course accept at face value every complaint as long as it comes from the 'right' kind of person.

Fifth Column
U.S. diplomat and longtime Pakistan expert is under federal investigation
A veteran State Department diplomat and longtime Pakistan expert is under federal investigation as part of a counterintelligence probe and has had her security clearances withdrawn, according to U.S. officials.
Got a little too sympathetic to the Paks?
The FBI searched the Northwest Washington home of Robin L. Raphel last month, and her State Department office was also examined and sealed, officials said. Raphel, a fixture in Washington’s diplomatic and think-tank circles, was placed on administrative leave last month, and her contract with the State Department was allowed to expire this week.

Two U.S. officials described the investigation as a counterintelligence matter, which typically involves allegations of spying on behalf of foreign governments. The exact nature of the investigation involving Raphel remains unclear. She has not been charged.

A spokesman for Raphel said she was cooperating with investigators but has not been told the “scope or nature or that she is the target” of any probe.

Canada Introduces Law Banning Polygamist Immigrants
[AnNahar] Canada's Immigration Minister Chris Alexander Wednesday unveiled plans to ban entry to migrants who practice polygamy and what he termed "barbaric cultural practices."

The move follows a spate of so-called "honor" killings over the past decade involving immigrant families from the Middle East and South Asia.

"We are strengthening our laws to protect Canadians and newcomers to Canada from barbaric cultural practices," Alexander said in a statement.

"We are sending a strong message to those in Canada and those who wish to come to Canada that we will not tolerate cultural traditions in Canada that deprive individuals of their human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
The sweeping changes to Canada's immigration act would also prohibit forced marriages, set a minimum age for marriage at 16 and limit possible defenses in "honor" killings and many spousal murders.

In "honor" killings, carried out to protect what is seen as family pride, reasons for disapproval can include having relationships outside of one's caste or religion.

In May, a court ordered the mother and uncle of a Canadian woman allegedly killed overseas over her secret marriage to a poor rickshaw driver to be extradited to India to face prosecution for murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the 14-year-old case.

In another case, the father and brother of a 16-year-old girl pleaded guilty in 2010 to murdering her for disobeying her father, including refusing to wear a hijab. The family had immigrated from Pakistain.

Obama to Ask Congress to Authorize Fight Against Islamic State
[VOA News] When U.S. President Barack Obama
We're gonna punish our enemies and we're gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us...
meets Friday with congressional leaders about their legislative plans, he said he'll seek specific authorization for the Arclight airstrikes being conducted by a U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
gunnies in Iraq and Syria.

The air campaign against the forces of Evil began in September. Initially, Obama used congressional permission granted by the 2001 Authorized Use of Military Force. Then-President George W. Bush cited that law more than a decade ago to retaliate against al-Qaeda after its 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. that killed nearly 3,000 people.

But at a post-election presser Wednesday, Obama said it's time "to right-size and update" that war authorization to "suit the current fight rather than previous fights."

He said the U.S. military force needs both White House and congressional support.

"The world needs to know we are united behind this effort, and the men and women of our military deserve our clear and unified support," the president said.

Alleged USS Cole Mastermind Seeks to Avoid Death Penalty
[AnNahar] The defense team for a Saudi man accused of organizing the attack on the USS Cole asked a Guantanamo Bay judge Wednesday to stop him from facing capital punishment.

Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri faces the death penalty if convicted of charges stemming the Cole suicide kaboom, and from the attack on the MV Limburg French oil tanker.

Seventeen sailors died on the Cole in 2000 in Yemen; a Bulgarian sailor was killed in the 2002 Limburg attack.

Al-Nashiri's lawyers have provisionally had the Limburg charges withdrawn, though the United States is appealing that ruling.

In their motion to withdraw the death penalty in the Cole charges, the lawyers said "there is no military necessity served by executing the accused," adding that he is "far from the original theater of war in which he was captured" in 2002.

"There's no deterrence in executing Mr Nashiri," said military defense lawyer Major Allison Danels, adding that such an action would only inflame tensions and would likely play into the hands of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. jihadists.

"It would do nothing but enrage the bandidos Lions of Islam and give them reasons for their brutalities," she said at a preliminary hearing at the U.S. naval prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Al-Nashiri was initially held for several years in secret CIA prisons.

"Even if Mr Nashiri is acquitted, he can be detained indefinitely by the U.S., he's no danger for public security," Danels added.

Military judge Colonel Vance Spath will decide on the motion later, but he acknowledged how long the case is taking to play out.

"This case needs to move forward, because it's (been) here for a long time," he said, noting that the U.S. government was still appealing the dismissal of the Limburg charges.

Spath dismissed those charges this summer because he said the U.S. military had not shown it had jurisdiction pertaining to the attack on a French vessel.

The judge declined to give a date for al-Nashiri's trial, though it was initially supposed to open in February 2015.

India-Pakistan
Move to seek transfer of 'conversion' case to Karachi
[DAWN] KARACHI: The lawyer representing the parents of Anjali Kumari Meghwar said on Thursday that he would file a petition in the Sindh High Court for the transfer of the case from Daharki to Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
The move came four days before the girl is to record her statement before a judicial magistrate in Daharki.

Speaking to Dawn, lawyer Kanji Rano Bheel said: "The family is going to meet the police chief again on Friday (today). Among the things we would discuss there includes the demand that the investigation officer in this case be from Karachi."

In this regard, a constitutional petition from the family would ask the SHC to transfer the case to Karachi and order a medical examination of Anjali Kumari to determine her age.

According to reports, Anjali Kumari is yet to record her statement under Section 164 of the criminal procedure code, a hearing for which is scheduled for Nov 12. "She's not bound by the law to record her statement," said the lawyer, "because she's a minor. But we need proof of that for which we are filing a petition in the high court."

The case of alleged forced conversion that has come up in recent weeks shows that Anjali Kumari was 'kidnapped from her home'. According to her parents, she was converted at the shrine of Bharchundi Shareef in Daharki, and married off to a Moslem man.

Her parents denied the claims made by a spokesperson for the shrine caretakers that she converted and married of her own free will. A civil court has sent the girl to live in a shelter home in Karachi.

Christian couple lynching incited by mullah of local mosque: police
[DAWN] Police tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
dozens of people on Wednesday after a mob beat a Christian couple to death and burned their bodies for allegedly desecrating the Holy Koran.

Local media reported the couple was accused of burning a copy of the Holy Koran and throwing it in a rubbish bin in the province of Punjab on Tuesday. Police said their bodies were set on fire in a brick kiln.

"We have arrested 44 people, it was a local issue incited by the mullah of a local mosque," Jawad Qamar, a regional police chief said. "No particular sectarian group or religious outfit was behind the attack."
Wonder if the holy man was among those jugged?
The incident took place in the town of Kot Radha Kishan, some 60 kilometres of Lahore, and was the latest example of mob violence against minorities accused of blasphemy.

The victims were only identified by their first names, Shama and Shehzad, and were a married couple.

Police 'too slow to act'
Punjab police spokeswoman Nabila Ghazanfar said the couple, like many other poor Christians in the area, worked in a brick kiln owned by a local man who has also been arrested.
He'll be out on bail in no time.
"Three days ago, a co-worker alleged that they had burnt pages of the Holy Koran.
Any special reason for that?
"On Tuesday morning, a mob gathered outside their house, dragged them out, beat and burnt them in the same kiln where they worked," she said.
Islam in action.
A local journalist, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said police were too slow to act to protect the couple.

"Police did not take it seriously. Later they sent five officers to the spot," the journalist said. "The couple was thrashed and burnt in their presence."
The policemen were therefore part of the mob. Betcha they weren't arrested.
Pakistain's brick kiln workers are often subject to harsh practices, with a study by the Bonded Labour Liberation Front Pakistain estimating that 4.5 million are indentured labourers.
Also known as "slaves." You can be polite and call them "serfs."

Three-member committee to investigate killings
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif
...Pak dynastic politician, brother of PM Nawaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab...
has constituted a three-member committee to fast track the investigation of the killings and ordered police to beef up security at Christian neighbourhoods in the province, an official from his media office said.
Yeah, they always do that. Lemme know when they abolish serfdom...
Blasphemy charges, even when they go to court, are punishable by death in Pakistain. They are hard to fight because the law does not define clearly what is blasphemous. Presenting the evidence can sometimes itself be considered a fresh infringement.
Catch 22, 23, and 36 through 59.
Blasphemy is a serious offense in Pakistain where those accused are sometimes lynched on the spot.
Howling mobs are a feature of Islam everywhere it takes hold, aren't they?

Rights group demands justice for couple
Pak authorities must bring to justice those responsible for the vicious mob killing of the Christian couple, human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
groups Amnesia Amnesty International said in a blurb Tuesday.
Yeah, right. Blah blah blah. Check back in six weeks and see if anybody remembers.
"This vicious mob killing is just the latest manifestation of the threat of vigilante violence which anyone can face in Pakistain after a blasphemy accusation -- although religious minorities are disproportionately vulnerable. Those responsible must be brought to justice and the Pak authorities have to ensure at-risk communities are proactively given the protection they need," said David Griffiths, Amnesia Amnesty International's Deputy Asia Pacific Director.
In Pakistain there's no common nationhood. You're a Sunni Moslem or a Deobandi. Otherwise you're a target. Once all the Christians, Shias, Brelvis, Ismailis, Sikhs, Hindus and such have been killed or forcibly converted the salafists and the Deobandis will start killing each other off.
Christians make up about two per cent of the country's total population and tend to keep a low profile where holy warriors frequently bomb targets they see as heretical, including Christians, Sufi and Shia Moslems.
Well, you know. Islam is threatened in Pakistain.
All of Pakistain's minorities feel that the state fails to protect them, and even tolerates violence against them.

Last month a British man with a history of mental health illness, sentenced to death for blasphemy earlier this year, was shot by a prison guard in his cell.

Also in October, a Pak court upheld the death penalty against a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who is also accused of blasphemy, in a case that drew global headlines after two prominent politicians who tried to help her were assassinated.
And today a cop killed a guy in the stationhouse with an ax for "blasphemy."

JI to build Pakistan into Islamic welfare state: Siraj
[DAWN] Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer.
(JI) Emir Sirajul Haq
...current head of the Pak Jamaat-e-Islami. Siraj was born in 1962 and entered politics shortly after that...
on Thursday said that Minar-e-Pakistain symbolised the effort of the Pak nation and that the JI was starting a struggle to complete the Pakistain movement as envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam.

He was speaking to the media at Minar-e-Pakistain which he visited to review arrangements for the JI Ijtema being held from November 21 to 23.

Sirajul Haq said that Quaid-e-Azam had started the Pakistain movement with the adoption of the Pakistain resolution on 23rd of March, 1940.

The JI leader said that feudal lords and capitalists brought up by the British sabotaged the Quaid's movement and drifted it from its goal of making Pakistain an Islamic welfare state.

He said the JI would revive the same movement at the Ijtema which would be attended by people from every nook and corner of the country.

Shahbaz announces Rs5m for family of lynched Christian couple
[DAWN] Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif
...Pak dynastic politician, brother of PM Nawaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab...
on Thursday visited the family of a Christian couple burnt alive by a mob in Kot Radha Kishan near Lahore for allegedly desecrating pages of the Holy Koran.
That won't bring them back to life, nor will it less their final suffering.
The chief minister announced Rs5 million from the provincial government as compensation for the family of the dear departed as well as 10 acres of land.
Some sardar or malik or something will have the land jumped within in year. The Rs5 million's probably not enough to buy the family out of serfdom.
Condoling with the family for their loss, Shahbaz also announced that the Punjab government will take care of the couple's three children and provide for their education and well-being.
"We;ll find a nice madrassah for them, and find good Moslem husbands for the girls."
"There is no limit to which this dreadful act can be condemned. The perpetrators will be tried under anti-terrorism and will be given harsh punishment," he said.
Not nearly enough evidence. It'll all be forgotten in six weeks or less.
On Wednesday, police incarcerated
Please don't kill me!
50 villagers who were believed to be part of the mob that beat the couple to death.

Humanity humiliated by Pakistan lynching: Vatican
[DAWN] A top Vatican official has described the lynching of a Christian couple in Pakistain as a humiliation for all of humanity.
...by adherents of the "religion of peace."
Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the chair of the Roman Catholic church's council for interfaith dialogue, said he had been profoundly shocked by accounts of the horrific death of Shehzad Masih and Shama Bibi.
But really, it had nothing to do with religion...
"How can we remain impassive before such crimes, justified in the name of religion?," Tauran said on Vatican Radio, urging Moslem leaders in Pakistain to vigorously condemn the killings.
Oh, tut tut. Islam's not the only religion that does such things. Look at the Aztecs!
"It is all of humanity that is humiliated," he said, adding: "The first victims are in fact Moslems because these misdeeds give an image of Islam that is terrible."
Probably the bastards with foreign spies who only did it to give Islam a bad name.
The incident took place at the town of Kot Radha Kishan, some 60 kilometres southwest of Lahore. On Wednesday, police placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
50 villagers who were believed to be part of the mob that beat the couple to death.
... while screaming "Death to the Infidels" and "Allahu Akbar!" Not that it had anything to do with religion, of course...
The arrests included the owner of the brick kiln where 25-year-old Shama, who was pregnant at the time of the incident, and her husband Shahzad Masih worked as bonded labourers.
Like serfs? Or slaves. You can kill slaves. They don't have any rights. Not much more than animals, are they? The owner of the brick kiln will be out in no time. So will the other 49 people. Not nearly enough evidence, y'know.
According to reports, more than a thousand charged people from three nearby villages tortured the couple before putting them into the kiln's furnace on Tuesday. Police said a local religious leader had fanned the issue.

IS publishes photo of leader Al-Baghdadi with his son after release from Iraqi prison
[Iraq News] Sites affiliated with the so-called Islamic state in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) published a picture claiming to show the leader of the group, His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

The image shows three masked men and a child who wears a mask as well. The sites referred to it as "Al-Baghdadi is carrying a gun and standing next to his son."

The same sites -- followed by IraqiNews.com -- explained that Al-Baghdadi appeared in the picture after his release from Buca prison in southern Iraq where he was held in captivity for months. He then journeyed with his family to the Syrian ‐ Iraqi border to manage gangs and begin the formation of the terrorist organization which is now known as the Islamic State

US sent 'lessons learned' team to model Israel tactics in Gaza operation
The United States sent a team of senior officers to Israel three months ago to learn from Israel's tactics in Operation Protective Edge in Gaza over the summer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey said on Thursday.

Dempsey praised the IDF for taking "extraordinary lengths to limit collateral damage and civilian casualties" in its war against Hamas. The militant organization, Dempsey said, "had become very nearly a subterranean society," burrowing underground and hiding amongst the civilian population.

"We sent a team of senior officers and non-commissioned officers over to work with the IDF to get the lessons from that particular operation in Gaza," he told an audience at the Carnegie Endowment. He referred to the group of officers as the "lessons learned team."

Half Of Palestinians Think Violent Confrontation With Israel Imminent
[Ynet] Paleostinian poll finds 85% of Paleostinians think Temple Mount should not have separate gates for Jews; despite pessimistic views, almost 70% believe peace with Israel is possible.

Half of Paleostinians anticipate a violent confrontation with Israel in the near future amid daily festivities and rising tensions in Jerusalem, according a poll by the Paleostinian Center for Public Opinion published on Thursday.

Out of the 1,000 Paleostinians over the age of 18 polled, only 28 percent don't foresee an escalation of hostilities in the near future.

Meanwhile 85.6 percent of respondents agreed with Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
' statement that opening separate gates for Jews to enter the Temple Mount compound would constitute "a unilateral measure that would torpedo any opportunity for reinstating the grinding of the peace processor."

Less than half of the Paleostinians (46.6 percent) support the recent unilateral diplomatic moves Abbas has been pushing - a UN Security Council resolution setting a deadline to "the end of Israeli occupation" and a threat to turn to the ICC should the resolution fail. Out of the rest, only 30.6 percent were against the moves, while 21.2 percent refused to answer the question.

The poll indicated there is more support on the Paleostinian street for bilateral diplomatic moves. Over half (54.3 percent) of the Paleostinians support the two-state solution, while a little less than a third (31.3 percent) oppose it.

In addition to that, 69.7 percent believe there is a chance peace can be reached with Israel, while only 27.5 percent were pessimistic about the prospects for peace.

PLO Urge Journalists: Don't Use Term 'Temple Mount'
[Ynet] PLO statement claims 'Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is not a disputed territory and all other terms, therefore, are null and void.'

The Paleostinians on Wednesday urged news hounds and news outlets not to use the term Temple Mount when covering recent events in the complex which also houses the Al-Aqsa mosque.

A blurb by the Paleostinian Liberation Organization (PLO), dubbed "Concern over the use of the inaccurate term 'Temple Mount' to refer to Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound in Jerusalem" was sent out on Wednesday.

First reported by Matthew Kalman's blog, the statement called on the international media "to adhere to international law and correct any other existing terminology used. The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is not a disputed territory and all other terms, therefore, are null and void."

The Paleostinians argue that "Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound is located in East Jerusalem, an internationally recognized part of the Occupied State of Paleostine."

Israel's claim over East Jerusalem, the PLO goes on to say, is not recognized by the international community "in line with UN Security Council Resolution 478."

"This Resolution rejected the Israeli measure as a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and determined that: 'All legislative and administrative measures and actions taken by Israel, the occupying Power, which have altered or purport to alter the character and the status of the Holy City of Jerusalem, and in particular, the recent âbasic lawâ on Jerusalem, are null and void.'"

The PLO accuses the Israeli government of continuing "to incite against this sacred site, and consequently provoke Paleostinian fears and anger.

"Israel, the occupying power, has failed at stopping settler holy warriors from entering the Mosque and this constitutes a violation of the Waqfâs custodianship and its obligation as an occupying power to maintain public order and civil life in the occupied territory."

Abbas Hails ‘Peace-Loving’ Arafat, Says Failure To Reach Deal Will Inflame Region
[IsraelTimes] PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
said Thursday that failure to secure a peace agreement with Israel would result in a violent escalation, the Paleostinian Ma'an News Agency reported.
"Nice liddle country ya got there, Bud, be a shame if somethin' happened to it."
Speaking to Paleostinian TV ahead of the 10th anniversary of the death of Yasser Arafat, Abbas said that no peace accord "will worsen the situation in the already inflamed areas of the region," while an agreement will "extinguish all the fires."
On the other hand, an economic boycott by Sweden of obviously Israeli products isn't going to make much difference, and nobody is going to join in the little war you're trying to start.
Abbas also spoke highly of former PA, PLO and Fatah leader Arafat, calling him "a source of optimism," as well as "pragmatic and peace-loving," the report said.
And there we have it, dear Reader. Peace-loving, forsooth!
"I remember a time after 1967, what was considered the collapse of the entire Arab nation, I went to Syria and found him [Arafat] in a car dressed in military garb and when I said to him, Abu Ammar the war is over and we lost, he said: 'No, they were defeated not us,' then he made up his mind to come to Paleostine and he did," Abbas recalled.

The PA president added that the Paleostinian leadership will defend the "right of return" for Paleostinian refugees to Israel, and demand Jerusalem be the capital of a Paleostinian state.
That's nice. Have you made any progress on those two demands since 1948?
Abbas also reiterated his pledge to submit a resolution on Paleostinian statehood to the UN Security Council,
He thinks this time America won't veto it. Possibly he's right, though that would keep the Democrats in the wilderness for an awfully long time.
seeking an imposed deadline for Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and accused Israel of stalling negotiations.
Golly, he sounds just like SoS John Kerry speaking for President Obama -- how odd.
He hailed Sweden for its recognition of Paleostine on October 30, and urged other European nations to follow suit.

Abbas's comments came amid increased unrest in Jerusalem, and as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman, and Economy Minister Naftali Bennett have repeatedly accused the Paleostinian leader of fueling the violence in the capital with his rhetoric.

On Thursday, State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki
...a valley girl who woke up one morning and found she was spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of State...
called for all sides to do more to calm tensions.
So helpful, that one.
Responding to a question about Israeli claims of Paleostinian incitement, Psaki said she did not know if cartoons posted on social media by Fatah bodies calling for new attacks were linked to Abbas or his Fatah movement and added that the US still viewed him as a peace partner.

"We would strongly condemn any incitement to violence," she said.
"...if we should ever happen to see such a thing," she added, with her eyes tightly closed against the possibility.
Last Thursday, following the shooting of right-wing activist Yehudah Glick, Abbas said the closure of the Temple Mount to Moslem worshipers was tantamount to a "declaration of war."
Is anything at all not tantamount to a declaration of war when he's in a mood?
The Paleostinian leader also praised the would-be assassin of Glick in a letter to the terrorist's family, in which he referred to the shooter as a "martyr defending the rights of our people and its holy places."
Now that, my dears, is what tantamount to a declaration of war looks like.
The condolence letter drew fierce criticism from Israeli politicians across the political spectrum.

Netanyahu Orders House Demolitions For Jerusalem Terrorists
[IsraelTimes] PM calls for more arrests, additional restraining orders for rioters in emergency session on violence in the capital

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed officials Thursday to demolish the homes of the forces of Evil who had perpetrated attacks in Jerusalem, according to Israel Radio.

The prime minister called an emergency session Thursday on the festivities in Jerusalem, with Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch, Police chief Yohanan Danino, and Shin Bet head Yoram Cohen in attendance.

During the meeting, Netanyahu called to implement more severe measures against the Jerusalem rioters, including destroying the homes of forces of Evil who committed attacks in Jerusalem, increasing administrative detentions and issuing additional restraining orders.

The prime minister's directive came a day after an East Jerusalem man drove his van into a group of pedestrians in the capital, killing a Border Police officer and injuring 11 other people, one of them critically.

The fatality, Jedan Assad, 38, from the Druze village of Beit Jann was buried Thursday.

The perpetrator of the Jerusalem attack, 48-year-old Ibrahim al-Akary from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Shuafat and a father of five was buried late Wednesday night in the Old City after being shot to death by security forces during the course of the attack.

'Car Intifada' Cartoon Campaign Encourages Vehicular Attacks
[Ynet] Paleostinians distribute cartoons likening cars to Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, rockets on social networks in wake of wave of vehicular terror attacks.

After two vehicular terror attacks occurred on Wednesday, wounding 16 people and killing one, Paleostinians have termed their latest resistance efforts a "car intifada" and are posting cartoons online likening vehicles to rockets launched by Hamas during Operation Protective Edge.

Following the wave of attacks in which drivers ploughed their cars into groups of people, which started two weeks ago with the attack that took place at the Ammunition Hill light-rail stop, killing 3-month-old Haya Ziesl Baron and Ecuadorian Karen Mosquera (22) â Paleostinians came to understand that vehicles could potentially be used as lethal weapons.

Hamas, whose officials praised on Wednesday the terror attack in Jerusalem, is fueling the fire and is attempting ‐ through vehicular attacks ‐ to initiate an intifada.

During the past day, many cartoons were distributed on social networks following the terror attacks. In one of them, which garnered significant popularity, the word "daes" appears ('run over' in Arabic), alluding to the jihadist organization Daesh, which is the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Another cartoon shows the vehicle used for the terror attack yesterday, entitling it a M-75 on four wheels, hinting that such methods of attack are an alternative to Hamas' weapons (the M-75 missiles). Next to the cartoon, the words "Soon, there will be a R160 bus" appear, hinting at Hamas' longest-range rocket, which reached the outskirts of Haifa in the latest round of fighting.
Screen captures of these and similar bits of cleverness can be seen at the link.
Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie ducked another tomato...
two people who were maimed in the terror attack in Jerusalem on Wednesday are still hospitalized at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem's Ein Kerem. One is critical condition and the other is listed in moderate condition. Three people maimed in the Gush Etzion terror attack are also being treated at the hospital, with one at death's door, one in moderate-to-serious condition and the other in light condition.

Three other people maimed in the run over attack in Jerusalem are hospitalized at the Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in the city, including two at death's door and the other in moderate condition.

On Wednesday, Police forces tossed in the slammer

sixteen people suspected of disrupting public order in Jerusalem.

Since Oct. 22, 188 suspects were arrested on charges of disrupting public order, including 71 people under the age of 18.

#1  I suspect we are going to see a lot of this, both abroad and at home. It's cheap, easy, can be done on the spur of the moment, and it's rather impersonal - unlike stabbing someone or blowing yourself up. Somebody cue the "lone wolf" meme...

Southeast Asia
Malaysia's Moderate Muslim Face Takes a Beating
[AnNahar] When Malaysia's urbane Prime Minister Najib Razak travels abroad he invariably touts his country's widely accepted reputation for moderate Islam, but that image is taking a beating at home.

Increasingly strident Islamist pressure, often initiated by Najib's own government, is causing deepening dismay in the traditionally tolerant multi-faith country.

The trend is rooted in the decades-old regime's attempts to strengthen its weakening grip amid repeated electoral setbacks, as a formidable opposition taps into broad sentiment for liberal reform.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
US airstrikes killed Syrian civilians: Militants
[Iran Press TV] murderous Moslem group fighting against the Syrian government says US-led Arclight airstrikes have killed a number of civilians, including children, near the Turkish border.

Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
said in a statement on Thursday that overnight raids also destroyed one of its bases near the border.

US-led Arclight airstrikes also struck the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...
Front for only the second time since the coalition was formed in September.

Several bully boyz are said to have been killed in the attacks carried out in the Syrian provinces of Idlib and Aleppo.

Since late September, the US and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out Arclight airstrikes against ISIL inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

US warplanes have been conducting Arclight airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq since early August. Some Western states have also participated in some of the strikes in Iraq.

The US-led coalition has done little to stop the ISIL's advances in parts of Syria and in western Iraq.

Syria militants receiving medical care in Israel: Report
[Iran Press TV] Recent documents have disclosed that hundreds of maimed bully boyz fighting against the Syrian government have been receiving medical treatment in Israeli hospitals, Press TV reports.

According to the documents from Israeli hospitals, Israel's army paid USD 10 million up until September this year for the costs of treatment to the foreign-sponsored bully boyz injured during battles with Syrian government forces, and the money has come from the Israeli military's budget.

The papers further revealed that a total of 398 injured bully boyz have been treated at Galil Hospital in Israel's northern coastal city of Nahariya in the past couple of years.

Another hospital in the city of Safed has provided treatment for hundreds of other bully boys.

"The formal proof that the Israeli army is paying the costs of the treatment means they (the anti-Syria bully boys) are mercenaries working for Israel and Israeli agenda," Bassam Safadi, a political activist, told Press TV.

Last October, Israeli political commentator, Ehud Yaari, said the Tel Aviv regime has provided medical treatment for over 1,400 maimed bully boyz from Syria.

Yaari added that some bully boy groups operating inside Syria maintain contact with the Israeli army, and have had secret meetings with Israeli military figures in the Israeli coastal city of Tiberias.
