South Sudan lawmakers may vote to secede: official
[Pak Daily Times] Southern Sudan's parliament may vote to secede from the Khartoum-based north if an independence reference scheduled for January is delayed, a former top Southern Sudan official said on Thursday.

The oil-rich region can take such action under the terms of a peace deal signed in 2005 to end the north-south civil war, said John Duku, Southern Sudan's former mission chief to Kenya. The autonomous region does not have an embassy in Kenya but Duku was the equivalent of ambassador until March. He is currently working on Southern Sudan's referendum campaign but is not a member of the government.

"The date of January 9, 2011 is written not with words," said Duku, referring to the referendum date. "It is written with the blood of 2.5 million Southern Sudanese who perished during the war." He said that if the referendum is not held as scheduled on January 9, Southern Sudan's parliament would vote to secede the next day. Such a move will be opposed by officials in the north, which could lead to a confrontation, said Duku.

Far-right groups threaten to disrupt al-Quds Day march in London
IRNA -- The Jewish Defence League (JDL) and far-right groups are again planning to disrupt this Saturday's annual Quds Day march in London, the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has warned.

Last year's march to express solidarity with the Palestinians and other oppressed people around the world was marked in the British capital by confrontations with counter-demonstrators including the English Defence League (EDL) and pro-Zionist groups.

"The growing alliance between apologists for Israel and far-right extremists like the EDL, now regularly witnessed at pro-Palestinian events, is of growing concern to all supporters of Palestinians in this country," said IHRC chair Massoud Shadjareh.

El Jefe gives speech in his soldier suit
Cuba's Fidel Castro, reprising symbols of his former power, wore a full military uniform and spoke to a mass audience outdoors Friday for the first time since he nearly died four years ago. His appearance marked a return of two of the symbols of his nearly five decades as Cuba's ruler, which he had put aside after an emergency intestinal surgery left him at death's door four years ago.
I thought he wore it cuz he didn't look fat in it...
For the first time since 2006, he wore olive green pants, jacket and cap -- though without any insignias of rank -- and appeared before the kind of massive outdoor crowds that were trademarks of his rule. He wore glasses to read his prepared text but was introduced as comandante en jefe instead of compañero, the title most often used for Castro over the past four years.

The twin firsts fueled speculation that Castro is trying to regain some of his former powers, which he turned over unofficially to his 79-year old brother Raúl in 2006. Parliament selected Raúl as head of the government in 2008.
So, Fredo Fidel...up for a little fishing trip?
I know it was you, Raúl . Ya broke my heart...

Castro has now declared himself ``totally recovered'' and told a Mexican newspaper in an interview published this week that he was ``resuscitated'' -- without clarifying the exact nature of his health crisis or whether he was actually clinically dead at some point.
Unlike Raúl, who probably looks a little pale right now...

Australian cleric calls for beheading of Dutch MP
DUTCH anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders, the country's most heavily guarded politician, has denounced an Australian Muslim cleric's reported call for his beheading for denigrating Islam.

"This is really terrible news and a very serious threat, unfortunately," the firebrand politician told AFP by email in response to the threat reported in the popular Dutch daily De Telegraaf.

Wilders, who campaigns for an end to Muslim immigration and a ban on the building of new mosques and the Koran in a bid to end the "Islamisation" of the Netherlands, has been under 24-hour protection since 2004.

According to De Telegraaf, Sydney-born Muslim cleric Feiz Mohammad called on extremists in an internet chatroom to "chop off his head" and accused Wilders of "denigrating" Islam.

An interview with Wilders recorded in June was aired by SBS TV in Australia on Sunday. He called Islamic culture retarded and violent.

Mohammad, as the head the Global Islamic Youth Centre in the Sydney southwest suburb of Liverpool in 2005, gained notoriety for a speech at the Bankstown Town Hall in March of that year in which he told the audience a rape victim has "no-one to blame but herself".

Women teased men and appealed to their "carnal nature" by the way they dressed in "nothing but satanic skirts", the imam told the crowd.

In 2007, he was named by national security sources as one of at least 10 hardliners who were preaching fundamentalist messages in Australia, propagating a Wahabi ideology espoused by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

In the same year, Mohammad, who was believed to be living in the Middle East, came to the attention of Australia's attorneys-general when his lectures were included in a box set of DVDs which urged young Muslims to kill non-believers.

The Dutch intelligence service, AIVD, which is understood to have a copy of his latest speech, said Mohammad is considered on a par with US Muslim preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, who is seen as the brains behind a failed attack on a plane flying over Detroit.

Wilders told De Telegraaf, which published a recording of the speech on its website, that he is shocked by the death threat.

The newspaper claims to have a sound recording of the appeal by Mohammad, who it said had links with terrorists and was influential for Western Muslims.

Wilders' Party for Freedom wants to restrict immigration from Islamic countries and considers Islam a violent ideology rather than a religion.

It is currently involved in protracted negotiations to support a minority centre-right government of free-market liberals and Christian Democrats.

Wilders said he would seek "clarification from the Dutch Minister of Interior/ Justice why the secret service and anti-terrorism unit NCTB have not informed me" of the reported threat, and "what the consequences will be for me".

"The information that has come to the fore will be included in the threat analysis for Mr Wilders," said NCTB spokeswoman Judith Sluiter, who added: "We had contact with Mr Wilders last night. We have permanent contact."

Dutch authorities would not confirm the threat or elaborate on possible steps to be taken.

Barred from entering Britain last year to stop him spreading "hatred", Wilders is known abroad for his 17-minute anti-Islam commentary, "Fitna", which was termed "offensively anti-Islamic" by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

His Party for Freedom came third in June 9 national elections, nearly tripling its number of parliamentary seats to 24.

Wilders is set to go on trial in the Netherlands in October on charges of inciting racial hatred against Muslims.

let's see if we've got this right, Feiz. you put out a call demanding muslims behead Wilders - saw it right off his neck - because he called islam ignorant and violent.

Such an ignorant "religion". The ability to use logic in the thinking process generally appears at about 7 years old - the age of reason. Critical thinking forms a large part of education. islam, by its own definition of submission to Allan and the Mo, is incapable of either.

#4  this is the strength of democracy. It allows the other side, those with different opinions the chance to make a few mistakes.

It stops us killing each other. The best thing about this story is that the elected president orders and the CIA obeys.

In Russia, it is the ex-secret service that orders and the elected puppets that obey

If Obama has truly wrecked the ability of the CIA to protect the country with intel, then there will be another big atrocity.

And the mistake will be recognised and rectified, as long as it is reported openly.

it is a longer, messier way but it is the best way we have.

#5  this is the strength of democracy. It allows the other side, those with different opinions the chance to make a few mistakes.

A valid point, but I wouldn't want my family to be on the receiving end of one of Obama's mistakes. The other problem with your approach is that it may take many years for the truth to be revealed and publicized adequately by various media channels-- in this case, the fact that so many CIA directors adamantly opposed this madness. I don't see that there's been any serious, detailed, well-informed debate on the actual RESULTS obtained by these techniques, only a one-sided tendentious campaign by the mainstream media against them. Let alone a "national dialogue" of the sort Barry seems to favor for other contentious issues of great (or not-so great) import.
Posted by: lex || 09/03/2010 15:51 Comments || Top||

#6  "And the mistake will be recognised and rectified, as long as it is reported openly."

The problem is, a mistake like this cannot be rectified as it is disclosure of technique.

#7  I am a little hesitant to accept a book written by a speech writer. Why would a speech writer need access to classified CIA documents? OS would understand the statement 'Need to know" this guy did not need to know what was going on at a secret CIA base or any base to write a speeches. Actually I think they restrict his access lest he inadvertently include it in a speech.

UN 'ill-equipped' to solve world issues
[Iran Press] Time is ripe for a reform in the UN Security Council, an American expert on UN affairs says, stressing that the organization is "ill-equipped" to solve global issues. "There has to be a place where business is not as usual; where a small number of countries make decisions," Thomas G. Weiss told Press TV on Thursday.
I think it was Robert Heinlein who described a committee as the only creature with 18 stomaches and no brain...
He voiced concerns over the current UN system, which gives a veto power to a small number of countries -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States. "Six decades after its establishment, the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society and its system-related agencies and programs are perpetually in crisis," said Weiss, who is the presidential professor of political science at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

He further stressed that no UN institution should be based on the past. "While World War I and II gave rise to the groundbreaking efforts at organizations in 1919 and 1945, the UN today seems ill-equipped to deal with modern challenges to world order."

I've long thought that US policy should be to promote Japan and India (and perhaps Brazil, Australia and South Africa) as Security Council Members under the premise that it dilutes any votes and forces China (and France and others who prize membership) to come out against these nations getting the vote to preserve their current level of power.

Yeah, and the revolving seat should be dumped as a stupid idea.

Zawawi: Relentless struggle will continue to liberate Holy Qods
[IRNA] Paleostine's Ambassador to Tehran Salah Zawawi said on Thursday that relentless struggle with the Zionist occupiers will continue until liberation of Holy Qods.
... aka Jerusalem, natch. Wouldn't want to call it Jew-rusalem...
Speaking to IRNA, he said Qods international day was initiated by the late Imam Khomeini. Late Imam Khomeini put the issue of Paleostine on the agenda of Islamic Ummah which this left an undeniable impact on the resistance of Paleostinian nation to occupation, he said.

'Late Imam Khomeini expelled the representatives of the Zionist regime from Iran, cut export of oil to the (then) apartheid regime of South Africa and established the first-ever Paleostine Embassy on ruins of Israeli embassy in Tehran.'

13 Palestinian armed groups vow to step up attacks against Israel
(Xinhua) -- More than a dozen Palestinian militant groups on Thursday pledged to step up joint and separate attacks on Israeli targets to foil Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations kicking off in Washington Thursday.

"The factions agreed that all means are open to the Palestinian resistance to deal with Israel in the coming phase," Abu Obaida, spokesman of the Hamas armed wing, read a statement of the Gaza- based groups in a press conference held in the Gaza Strip.

On Tuesday, Hamas militants killed four Israeli settlers near the West Bank city of Hebron. The next day, Hamas claimed responsibility for another drive-by shooting in which two Israelis were injured near Ramallah.

'Lebanese president spied on by Israel'
[Iran Press] Israel agents have spied on Lebanese President Michel Sleiman, Beirut says in a complaint filed with the UN about Israeli spy rings.

The country's ambassador to the United Nations, Nawaf Salam, delivered the complaint to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Turkish Ambassador to the UN Ertugrul Apakan, who has taken over the rotating presidency of the the UN Security Council (UNSC), Lebanon's Naharnet news website reported on Thursday.

The complaint informs that the spy networks "constitute an aggression on Lebanon and on its sovereignty in a clear violation of international resolutions, particularly resolution 1701."

Blair: 'World must prepare for military option against Iran'
[The News (Pak)] Former British premier Tony Blair warned in an interview on Wednesday that the international community may have "no alternative" to taking military action against Iran if it develops a nuclear weapon.

"I am saying that I think it is wholly unacceptable for Iran to have a nuclear weapons capability and I think we have got to be prepared to confront them, if necessary militarily," he said in extracts pre-released by the BBC from an interview to publicise his memoirs.

"I think there is no alternative to that if they continue to develop nuclear weapons. They need to get that message loud and clear."

Home Front: Culture Wars
Sheriff Joe Fires Back - "Now it's time to take the gloves off."
The following is an official statement by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio regarding today's lawsuit filed against his office by the U.S. Justice Department in Washington, D.C. for alleged refusal to turn over documents. It is followed by another statement from his Washington, D.C. attorney, Bob Driscoll.

"The Obama administration has filed three lawsuits against Arizona in the last few weeks ... one against a college district, one against the state of Arizona and now one against my office. Each lawsuit centers on something to do with alleged racial discrimination.

These actions make it abundantly clear that Arizona, including this Sheriff, IS Washington's new whipping boy. Now it's time to take the gloves off.

As for today's lawsuit against my office: These people in Washington met with my attorneys only a few days ago. And in that meeting, Washington got our cooperation; they admitted they already have thousands of pages of the requested documents; and they were given access to interview my staff and get into my jails.

They smiled in our faces and then stabbed us in the back with this lawsuit. The Obama administration intended to sue us all along, no matter what we did to try to avert it. Washington isn't playing fair and it's time Americans everywhere wake up and see this administration for what it really is. Calculating, underhanded at times and certainly not looking out for the best interests of the legal citizens residing in this country."

#1  Sheriff Joe nails it, a bit too nicely, but still on the money.

#3  ...and they were given access to interview my staff and get into my jails. Can you not just keep em for awhile and cool em off Joe? This is just harassment from DOJ at BHO's direction. For some reason they don't seem to have enough to do. They mistakenly believe in waging this cultural war against anyone who disagrees with them; namely most of the American people.

#4  I hope Joe is also keeping good records of the names of the legal thugs engaged in all this so that the House can have them lie testify before them for the record.

#5  If the Republicans (and the Tea Party--I should say America) wins the House and maybe the Senate, it looks like the BHO administration is going to be sent on a lot of paper chases. What goes around comes around. I see Congressional hearings in their future. Maybe some of that smarmy arrogance of Pelosi, Reid, BO, Weiner, Schumer, and others will disappear. Maybe their disdain for fellow Americans will change.

#6  Obama has already done many things that violate his oath of office. With some nice corruption charges in there, I doubt he will make it his entire term without being impeached if the Republicans win both houses.
Posted by: DarthVader || 09/03/2010 9:13 Comments || Top||

#7  I don’t see a downside for Arpaio on this one. If the DoJ had the goods on him he would’ve already been charged. The Feds are fishing and ole’ Joe’s got a rusty soup can ready to hook on the end of their line.
Posted by: DepotGuy || 09/03/2010 9:45 Comments || Top||

#8  Joe might start by publicizing every single case of violence involving illegal aliens and then start asking for appropriate federal action and/or help. And when it doesn't come, that's not going to buy the Obean administration any votes. And if Obean actually does his job, that will bolster Joe's case. Lose/lose for Obean.

#10  Come on OS, we never hung Jeff Davis from a sour Apple Tree. That was even after a lot of blood spilling. Only makes him a martyr for those who took his mark. As the old saying goes, everyone is good for something if only as a bad example to avoid what not to do in the future. He should pine much more along the dramatized curse of King Leonidas: "You there, Ephialtes. May you live forever."

#11  I seem to remember this same behavior in the Clinton administration. Waco ring a bell? After the gunfire, death, and destruction they could not corroborate any of the so called charges. THEY DID NOT NEED TO STORM THE COMPOUND. They could have shut of the light/water/food and let them surrender. I see this coming on a grander scale in Arizona. How long before the DOJ feels the need to remove Sheriff Joe and the Governor because of rumors of crimes? /tinfoil hat

#14  a tyrannical and corrupt government in Washington exemplified by an AG that refuses congressional summons to his DOJ Civil Rights attorneys and drops a slam-dunk case of voter intimidation. Sheriff Joe has my support, and it's "tea party", D-bag

#15  Darth "With some nice corruption charges in there, I doubt he will make it his entire term without being impeached if the Republicans win both houses."

Oh Yeah... say it with me now: President of the United States of America Joseph Biden. At least Pelosi won't be third in line any more. Small comfort that what with Biden still as VP. Better to send a series of pro taxcut/pro jobs bills to the WH and have "president no" veto each and every one over the next two years. It'll make for a nice lead in to 2012.

#16  Ran across an article someplace this am (sorry, no link) that says the Sheriff's office was reviewed by ICE and found to be in compliance with Fed guidelines. The only way they got a copy of the report was thru an FOIA request.

Also, methinks the Fed suit against the state immigration law has a fatal flaw (if flaw it is). If the state is not legally able to inforce Federal immigration law, does it not follow that they are not legally able/required to inforce any Fed law?

If we did that, we'd have to execute anyone who thinks Obamacare is a good thing. Somehow, I think this might include you.

#18  gorb - Haven't been around much recently, but Boston T looks like a troll... ignore him.... If we were to get THE ONE and his sycophant Holder on trial and incarcerated for high crimes and misdemeanors, send them to AZ.....might be cool to see them in some of Sheriff Joe's pink undies.... and eating baloney...

#20  I would not be in favor of impeachment and conviction despite there being a good argument for. Can you imagine the uproar that would occur in this country? The first black president gets impeached. I am not a fan of Obama. He is an arrogant left-wing, narcissistic idealogue who thinks he knows what is best for everyone. He has set this country back on its heels. He has shown racism and created deviseness where none existed. He has put the country in debt forever. He is a statist. The crowd around him is a deplorable bunch of 60's or latter day radicals; know-it-alls who seem to be enamored with themselves and have little real regard for the country.

However, if he were impeached it would be viewed as a lynching by the black community. It would create a wound that would not be healed for another 150 years. Better to tie him up for the next two years, and dump him out in 2012 as a one-term president.

#21  Posted by JohnQC 2010-09-03 18:04

I strongly disagree. One of the biggest problems in this country has been the decades long pandering to ethnic minorities...especially the Black minority.

Obama should be held up in front of the Nation and his crimes...yes CRIMES exposed in detail. If this shames or embarrasses, too bad. It is way past time to end all protected status for so-called victim groups.

The Blacks and other minorities need to be given a choice, they can be Americans first, and their ethnicity be irrelevant. Or, they can hold themselves separate and accept segregation, their choice.

On of my Indian (Asian) associates has shared with me that the Indian diaspora in this country hates blacks with a passion for their incessant playing of the race card. This from a man whose skin is as dark or darker than most African ethnics.

Impeach this treasonous bastard, and throw him out on his ear. A President Biden could be muzzled and leashed quite effectively by a Republican controlled house. Hell...impeach his ass too.

#22  I agree with Secret Asian, it is time to get rid of the Hyphenated Americans. They were a threat in Teddy Roosevelt's time and they are a threat now : the old Biblical injunction about serving two masters comes to mind. You are either an American or not, when you hyphenate it, you are proclaiming your primary loyalty by listing it first.

#26  Setting back race relations 150 years if we impeach Obama? Honestly, people who would be offended for impeaching such a traitorous president who happens to be black should just go kill themselves. Its not like we've had a female CIC, and yet, the females aren't being the bitchy little girls.
