Parliament Insists on Termination of Special Tribunal
[Tolo News] Lawmakers' talks with President Karzai on cancellation of election special tribunal have ended up with no results, Afghan House Speaker said on Saturday.

During the two-day talks Head of High Court said withdrawal of complaints being made by protesting candidates is the only way to terminate the special tribunal.

"There is only one way for a logical end to the special court and that is the protesting candidates to take back their petitions, (special tribunal said in presence of Head of High Court)," Afghan House Speaker Abdul Rahouf Ebrahimi said.

President Karzai has pledged to end this dilemma after returning from Iran trip on Tuesday, House Speaker said.

According to some parliamentarians the special tribunal is expected to try unseating 53 politicians.

Parliamentarians accused the House Speaker of acting in favour of the government.

"The Afghanistan's Caped President should take our petitions seriously," Baktash Seyawash, an Afghan MP, said.

Protesting candidates have called on President Karzai to let the special tribunal finish its job, before it is dissolved.

Obama says Libya mission saved countless lives
[Arab News] President Barack B.O. Obama told Americans on Saturday that the military mission in Libya is clear, focused and limited, and that it has already saved "countless" civilian lives.
The key concept being that he neither knows how to count the lives created or saved nor, due to the fog of war and lack of boots on the ground, is he capable of doing so.
A US -led coalition launched a bombing campaign last week with the aim of protecting civilians after Libyan leader Muammar Qadaffy
... a proud Arab institution for 42 years ...
, whose forces were advancing against rebel strongholds and threatened violent retaliation against them.

US and other international forces continue to strike Qadaffy's forces and armaments with missiles and precision bombs and are enforcing a no-fly zone over the country and an arms embargo at sea.

Obama said Libya's air defenses have been disabled, Qadaffy's forces are no longer advancing and in places like the city of Benghazi, a rebel stronghold where Qadaffy threatened to show "no mercy," his forces have been pushed back.

"So make no mistake, because we acted quickly, a humanitarian catastrophe has been avoided and the lives of countless civilians --innocent men, women and kiddies-have been saved," Obama said in his weekly radio address.

Members of Congress -- from both the left and right -- have criticized Obama for failing to communicate thoroughly the goals of the military operation. Some have assailed him for failing to seek Congressional approval for the action, others for embarking on another military mission in a Mohammedan country when the United States is already embroiled in the Iraq and Afghan wars.

Maybe.

My take is that Dubya is a cowboy and the good folks in Washington hate cowboys, ever since Andy Jackson sullied the White House with his friends, continuing with Teddy Roosevelt and to this day with Dubya.

They always have and they always will. It is one of the immutable charms, as it were, of life in Washington DC.

Gaddafi seeking help of western friends to convince international community to halt military intervention -- Sources
[Asharq al-Aswat] Libyan official sources have revealed that there are secret efforts being conducted by officials in the Qadaffy regime to find a way out of the current crisis and which aim to ensure the safety and continuation of the Libyan regime.

The official sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that Colonel Qadaffy, who just two days ago was threatening to crush the coalition forces, has hinted that he would be willing to enter negotiations to discuss possible resolutions to the current situation in Libya. This indication of Qadaffy's willingness to now enter negotiations was made by a number of senior Libyan officials during communications with several foreign parties outside of the country.
Really? And who might those parties be, pray tell?
The Libyan officials, who spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat on the condition of anonymity,
So that they won't be killed...
said that Colonel Qadaffy has sought the help of some western figures, who have decades-long friendly relations with him, to convince the international community to halt the air strikes against his forces and instead move towards a negotiated solution.

The source said that Qadaffy had submitted an offer through these western contacts that he would be willing to sit down at the negotiating table to search for an honorable solution to the current crisis; however the source did not disclose whether this solution would include Qadaffy stepping down from power.
Since that wouldn't be 'honorable'...
Libyan Foreign Minister Musa Kusa is reportedly in contact with a number of officials within the US administration, including US Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman.

Asharq Al-Awsat also received information that Saif al-Islam Qadaffy
That'd be the pretty one who bought his PhD from the London School of Economics using a dissertation written for him by a committee of Harvard economics professors.
All of whom should have had their tenures revoked...
has fled run away absconded left the Libyan capital Tripoli, and traveled abroad, to work out an urgent plan to prevent the family fortune from being seized the political and military situation in the country from further deteriorating.

Qadaffy's son, who has no official position in the Libyan state,
other than 'crown prince'...
has close relations with a number of western and American business figures;
He has also been carrying on with a beautiful Israeli actress, who most likely won't be able to save his bacon, either.
however his reputation within Libya has suffered since he issued inflammatory comments warning the people of Libya against protesting.

The source also revealed that a high level Libyan delegation that is currently visiting Tunisia, including Libyan Parliamentary Speaker Muhamad Abul-Qasim al-Zawi, former Libyan prime minister Abdul Ati al-Obeidi, and senior Libyan diplomatic figures, is preparing to leave the country for a secret destination.
Venezuela?
Another source close to the Libyan regime told Asharq Al-Awsat that the Qadaffy regime appears ready to accept the possibility of the imposition of a long-term no-fly zone above Libya, in return for an immediate halt to the air strikes being carried out against its forces. The source said "what is being put forward now is to find a formula to stop what is happening in Libya, on the ground and in the skies, for if the situation continues as it is, this represents a grave threat to Qadaffy and his regime."
Which is supposed to be what we're trying to do in Libya.
The African Union has been attempting to engage both the Qadaffy regime and the Libyan rebels in dialogue to end the crisis in the country, with an African Union ad hoc committee on Libya meeting to announce that "the committee reiterates its willingness to take steps to engage the Libyan National Transitional Council on the basis of the African Union roadmap, with particular and urgent focus on the cessation of hostilities."
Goodness. How many purchased PhDs did it take to write that sentence?
However sources close to the chairman of the Libyan National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdul Jalil, informed Asharq Al-Awsat that he has rejected any negotiation with Qadaffy.
Since he now thinks he's got the upper hand...
The sources say that Jalil has called on Qadaffy to immediately step down from power and stop his campaign of violence against the people of Libya.

Roger Tamraz, a Middle Eastern businessman with longstanding ties to the Libyan regime, also informed the press that the Qadaffy regime has put out feelers seeking a peaceful end to the UN-backed military action, or a safe exit for the Qadaffy family from Libya.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Walter Q. Gresham ...
said that she was aware that people close to the Qadaffy regime had been trying to make contact. She said "I'm not aware that he [Qadaffy] personally has reached out, but I do know that people allegedly on his behalf have been reaching out."

She added "this is what we hear from so many sources. Some of it...is theatre, some of it is kind of, shall we say, game-playing...but some of it, we think, is exploring 'what are my options, where could I go, what could I do.' And so we encourage that."

I don't see Muammar or the Libyuhn Rebels making any sort of mutual compromise as per Electoral = Constitutional Republicanism-Democracy unless Muammar agrees to become a nominal figurehead + give up the bulk of his political power???

IMO given a choice, Muammar will prefer to die in office = power.

#6  Well the oil is not flowing and I don't see that changing anytime soon. So much instability in many areas of the world now. When can you remember so many countries dealing with riots. Government minders assault woman as she alleges she has been raped by Gaddafi troops
A distraught Libyan woman has told journalists in Tripoli how she was raped by government troops, before being bundled away by officials.

Iman al-Obeidi sought out foreign reporters in the capital's Rixos hotel on Saturday morning, weeping and claiming that troops had detained her at a checkpoint, tied her up, abused her and then led her away to be gang-raped.

As al-Obeidi spoke she was tackled by hotel staff and government minders dragged her out of the hotel.

Her story could not be independently verified, but the incident is being reported as an indication of the crackdown on dissenters ordered by Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader.
Is this an incident staged by Gaddafi for whatever purpose, or is it a sign that the regime is disintegrating?

How did she get through security right to the hotel where all the correspondents were assembled? Keeping control of what these reporters can and cannot see and hear should be a priority of the regime. Also she must have known that this might be her death sentence.

Something doesn't seem right here.

I'm that if it was staged, it went badly awry. There's no propaganda value in being so spectacularly thuggish in front of international cameras while you're trying to talk your way out of being bombed cross-eyed by the West and then fed to hungry Islamofascists and angry tribal bumpkins.

Britain
UK at risk of new Lockerbie
Kenneth Clarke has ratcheted up government pressure to depose Colonel Gaddafi by warning that the Libyan leader could stage a Lockerbie-style attack in revenge for Britain's role in the enforcement of the UN resolution if he is left in power.

The lord chancellor told the Guardian: "We do have one particular interest in the Maghreb [the western region of North Africa], which is Lockerbie. The British people have reason to remember the curse of Gaddafi – Gaddafi back in power, the old Gaddafi looking for revenge, we have a real interest in preventing that."

Clarke says in the interview that the UN resolution does not support regime change, adding that he would regard occupation as madness. But his remarks suggest British ministers recognise they now have a direct security interest in Gaddafi's removal in light of Libya's involvement in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing which killed 259 people on Pan Am flight 103 and 11 on the ground in the Scottish town.
Yup, and Qadaffy would do it again, multiple times, just to get his revenge.
The justice secretary is also extremely frank in admitting that the UK government has little idea how long the conflict will take or how it will be resolved.

His remarks came as a Guardian ICM poll shows more people oppose British involvement in the military action in Libya than support it: 42% against, compared with 36% in favour. Asked about the purpose of British involvement, 80% support protecting civilians from attack by Gaddafi and 42% said the intervention should help Libyan rebels depose Gaddafi.

China-Japan-Koreas
S. Korea to repatriate 27 N. Koreans over weekend
SEOUL, March 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korea said Friday it plans to repatriate 27 North Koreans by sea over the weekend as it has completed repairs on their fishing boat that brought them here in early February.

The South Korean Red Thingy Cross said in a statement released through the Unification Ministry that weather was also expected to improve in the Yellow Sea on Sunday, clearing a hurdle for the repatriation of the North Koreans who drifted here aboard their broken wooden boat with four others who later expressed their wish to defect.

The defections prompted the North to mount a bitter propaganda campaign accusing the South of forcing the four to desert their communist homeland, demanding all 31 be returned in a single group. But North Korea later backed down, requesting that the 27 wishing to return home be sent back first on their original boat. South Korea, which had originally planned to send the North Koreans back last week, has since postponed the transfer, citing bad weather at sea and the need to repair the boat.

The South Korean Red Thingy Cross "notified the North that it would repatriate the 27 North Koreans at 1:00 p.m. on March 27," it said, adding that the North has agreed to the plan.

S. Korea marks first anniversary of Cheonan sinking
SEOUL, March 26 (Yonhap) -- South Koreans marked the first anniversary of the deadly sinking of a navy ship on Saturday with a memorial ceremony in Daejeon, south of Seoul, attended by thousands of government and military leaders and citizens.

Forty-six South Korean sailors were killed in the sinking of the Cheonan near the tense Yellow Sea border with North Korea on March 26 of last year. A team of multinational investigators concluded last May that a North Korean torpedo was responsible for the sinking. Pyongyang still denies involvement.

The ceremony at the National Cemetery in Daejeon, where the 46 sailors were laid to rest, was attended by about 4,500 people, including President Lee Myung-bak and other government and military leaders.

Relatives of the victims wailed as the names of the dead were called during the ceremony.

Lee, dressed in a black suit, laid a wreath of flowers, burned incense and bowed before the altar where portraits of the victims were placed.

party on Friday announced a three-day blockade of NATO supply lines to express his party's protest against drone attacks in Pakistain and the disrespect shown by Christian preacher Terry Jones toward Islam's holy book.

Khan was addressing a large public rally at Qurtaba Chowk in Lahore which was attended by an estimated 20,000 people.

Khan said his party workers will stage sit-in protests at several points to block NATO's supply routes and will even stage sit-ins in the US.
In the U.S.? That's a good way to get your internet traffic watched, your phone calls listened to, and your mosque bugged. Do have fun sitting.
Khan also condemned the Zardari-Gilani government, saying the current regime is like a vehicle that has exhausted its fuel. He said during Zardari's annual address to the Parliament, nothing was mentioned about the innocent people killed in drone attacks.

In Bloody Karachi, Beautiful Downtown Peshawar, Quetta, Sukkar, Lahore and Islamabad, similar protest rallies were staged by right-wing parties against the US pastor.

...Fayyad's political agenda holds that neither violence nor peaceful negotiations have brought the Paleostinians any closer to an independent state. The alternative to both, violent negotiations, doesn't seem to be working too well, either...
on Friday said that the Israeli measures in Paleostinian territories "undermine" the Paleostinian Authority's efforts to establish a Paleostinian state and enforce security.

Fayyad said during a meeting with visiting US Defense Secretary Robert Gates that the "suppressive control by (Israeli) occupation, the settlement expansion and the military incursions in Paleostinian territories" undermines the Paleostinian Authority's (PA) readiness to establish a state.

The Western-backed prime minister stressed the necessity of ending the Israeli occupation of Paleostinian lands occupied in 1967, the Paleostinian people's right of self determination, and the establishment of this state by September 2011.

He also warned of the Israeli military escalation in Gazoo Strip.

For his part, Gates praised the achievements of PA despite the challenges and difficult conditions it faces.

The official WAFA news agency quoted Gates as saying that the US Administration is "committed to achieve peace based on two-state solution."

Gates is on a tour throughout the Middle East reported to be part of a farewell trip ahead of his planned retirement this summer.

He also met with Israeli leaders on Thursday and on early Friday before meeting with Fayyad.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier said that Israel will keep its troops on the eastern boundary of the West Bank, which borders Jordan, in any future agreement with the Paleostinians.

Fayyad rejected Netanyahu's announcement saying that there would be no Paleostinian state without Jordan Valley and without East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Jordan Valley and East Jerusalem "are undivided parts of the Paleostinian land that has been occupied since 1967," Fayyad said in his weekly speech on Wednesday. Gaza factions offer truce, if Israel reciprocates
[Ma'an] Paleostinian factions in Gazoo agreed Saturday to commit to a truce with Israel if its military stopped attacking the coastal enclave.

The decision was made at a meeting in Gazoo City, initiated by Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, to discuss Israel's escalation in attacks on the Gazoo Strip.

Over the last week, Israeli forces have bombarded the coastal enclave, killing 10 Paleostinians including civilians and children. Dozens more were maimed.

Israel's army says it is responding to a barrage of projectiles fired by Islamic fascisti into Israel, which have injured one Israeli in the last week.

Hamas initiated the meeting Saturday, which was attended by representatives of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine,
... Paleostinian Marxist movement, founded in 1967. It is considered a terrorist organization by more than 30 countries including the U.S., European Union, Australia, Canada, and Antarctica. The PFLP's stated goal is the establishment of a socialist State in Paleostine. They pioneered armed aircraft hijackings in the late 60s and early 70s...
the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Paleostine
... a breakaway faction of the Pöpular Frönt för the Liberation of Paleostine. The are regarded as the most intellectual of Paleostinian fedayeen groups, smoking cheap cigarettes and drawing heavily on Marxist-Leninist theory to explain their crappy lives. They can occasionally be seen strutting through the streets of Paleostine, dressed up like soldiers and lugging firearms, though they seldom manage to hit anything and then usually by accident. This may be because of their habit of wearing black masks that cut off most of their vision. That would also explain their habit of occasionally walking into walls, which is a well-known attribute of those immersed in true understanding of the dialectic...
and several other parties.

Fatah and five other PLO factions did not participate.

Khader Habib, an Islamic Jihad leader, told AFP after the meeting that "everybody confirmed that they respect the national consensus by calming things with the Zionist enemy."

But he said this "depends on the nature of Israeli behavior, and we insist on the need to respond immediately to each escalation by the occupiers."

And Osama al-Haj Ahmed, a Popular Front leader, said "the factions confirmed their commitment to national consensus in order not to give the aggressors any pretext" for attacking.

Hamas already pledged on Wednesday to "to restore calm" in the coastal enclave.

"We confirm that our stance in the government is set on protecting the stability," Hamas front man Taher al-Nunu said in a statement.

"We will work to restore the field conditions that were prevalent over the last few weeks."

And Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas premier in Gazoo, said he had been making contacts with other factions "with a view to Gazoo avoiding new confrontations with the Israeli occupation."

In particular, he said he had spoken with Ramadan Shallah, the Damascus based chief of Islamic Jihad, which has grabbed credit for many of the projectiles fired on Israel in the past week.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Tex and his new-found Indian friend were preparing a little surprise for the bandidos...
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that Israel had been "subjected to bouts of terror and rocket attacks" and that "we stand ready to act with great force and great determination to put a stop to it."

Friday was calm, but the Israeli army said Paleostinian Islamic fascisti fired two rockets from Gazoo into Israel overnight and damaged a house. No one was injured, the military said.

As Netanyahu spoke on Friday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak toured the Gazoo border with army chief Lieutenant General Benny Gantz saying calm seemed to be returning to the area.

And he indicated that if the rocket attacks stopped, Israel would also halt its strikes into Gazoo.

"We don't intend to let the terror organizations again disturb the order but we will do all we need to to return the [military] activity to the border line itself," he said.

In a visit to Israel this week, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Washington firmly backed Israel's right to respond both to the rocket fire and the Jerusalem bombing, which he described as "repugnant acts."

But he suggested Israel should tread carefully or risk derailing the course of popular unrest sweeping Arab and Mohammedan countries in the Middle East.

Gates pressed Israeli and Paleostinian leaders to take "bold action" for peace despite soaring tensions, saying political upheaval in the region offered an opportunity.

Some Israeli leaders have appeared reluctant to be dragged into another bloody war with Hamas, especially as they lack international support for any new offensive on Gazoo.

#2  Does anyone know where Zarquawi is buried? I mean after we found him alive and coughing up blood and put him in the ambulance and the "medics" put a big pillow over his face.
What happened to his gloriously martyred remains after that?

PBUH and all that. And did anyone put up a respectful headstone on Saddan's grave and put up a little fence so the village dogs dont piss in there anymore. I heard the dogs lift their legs when ever they hear the phrase Allahu Akbar.

Somebody should "do something."

initiative to restore national unity.

Abbas accepted an invitation from Gazoo premier Ismail Haniyeh to visit the Gazoo Strip in the midst of massive youth protests demanding an end to the division between the Hamas-run Gazoo government and the Fatah-led Paleostinian Authority in the West Bank.

However,

the president said he would not visit Gazoo to hold further talks, but rather to form an interim unity government to prepare for elections.

Abu Rudaineh urged Hamas to put national interests above partisan concerns and to accept the offer. He said the initiative had the support of the people, as well as national, regional and international figures.

The Arab League, Islamic Conference, United Nations

, European Union, Russia and Qatar all supported Abbas' plan, and viewed it as a way to end the internal crisis caused by the political divide, the Fatah official added.
