Shoe Perv Arrested; police seize thousands of shoes
The man who police say has spent 20 years stealing shoes from Newark-area residences was arrested Friday, after officers raided his house and confiscated three truckloads of shoes and other stolen goods.

Newark police say Walter J. Rubincan, 46, is responsible for the well-publicized series of thefts of shoes and photographs of men from university students' houses last month, as well as dozens of other burglaries.

Rubincan has been charged with 77 counts of theft, 25 counts of second-degree burglary and 15 counts of criminal mischief in 25 separate break-ins, some as recent as Jan. 12 and as early as December 2005. However, investigators believe he has committed similar crimes as far back as 20 years ago, said Newark police spokesman Lt. Brian Henry.

Police found more than 150 boxes of shoes and photographs in Rubincan's house in the 100 block of W. Cobblefield Court, located in a neighborhood off of W. Chestnut Hill Road, about a mile south of Delaware Stadium.

"A count has not yet been conducted, but it is a safe estimate that the boxes contain several thousand shoes," Henry said.

Officers also seized several composite photographs from a fraternity, as well as eight surfboards, eight guitars, a snowboard and a mandolin, all of which police say are stolen.

Reports of the shoe burglaries surfaced a month ago, when five houses, most of which are occupied by university students, were burglarized between Christmas and New Year's Day. In those incidents, Rubincan allegedly took men's shoes and photographs of men, leaving behind electronics and other valuables. It's not immediately clear when the surfboards and musical instruments were stolen.

Oral Sex, a Knife Fight and Then Sperm Still Impregnated Girl

A strange tale of oral sex, a knife fight and the most unlikely of pregnancies recently brought to light by the blogosphere has doctors touting the triumphant persistence of sperm.

In 1988, a 15-year-old girl living in the small southern African nation of Lesotho came to local doctors with all the symptoms of a woman in labor. But the doctors were quickly puzzled because, upon examination, she didn't have a vagina.

"Inspection of the vulva showed no vagina, only a shallow skin dimple," so doctors delivered a healthy baby boy via Caesarean, the authors wrote in a case report published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Lion Cheetah Tiger to Leave Sex Rehab, Return to Tour
Tiger Woods will leave a sex addiction rehabilitation clinic by the end of this week, RadarOnline reported Wednesday.

The gossip website claims Elin Nordegren has flown to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to meet her husband and bring him home.
So she can finish her round of 'golf' ...
Sources said the golfing legend is at the end of his program at the $40,000-a-course Pine Grove center. After leaving the facility the couple plan to take a few days off and travel away together - alone.

"Tiger and Elin want to be alone out of public when he leaves the clinic," a source told RadarOnline. "He should be out by the weekend. They are giving their marriage another try."

It is believed Nordegren recently spent five days with Woods as part of his rehab.

During that time a woman, thought to be Nordegren's twin sister Josefin, took Woods' and Nordegren's two children - daughter Sam, two, and son Charlie, six months - to see the whales at SeaWorld in Florida. It is believed it was a trick to confuse onlookers while Nordegren met with Woods.

There have also been reports that Nordegren has fired her divorce attorney, indicating that the couple may be reconciling.

The Herald Sun in Melbourne reported that the golfer will make a shock return to competitive golf in two weeks at the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona.

Woods has spent the past few weeks holed up in a private cottage at the rehab clinic, complete with police and video surveillance, and a newly installed 20-foot fence.

Africa Horn
Pirates aboard Libyan vessel fire on Somaliland forces
MOGADISHU (AFP) - A shoot-out erupted Thursday between pirates who seized a North Korean-flagged, Libyan-owned ship and coast guards in Somalia's breakaway Somaliland region, leaving one soldier dead, police said.

It was not clear what sparked the gunfight near Lasqorey, a coastal village which lies in area disputed by the Horn of Africa's northern self-declared states of Somaliland and Puntland.

"Pirates holding the cargo ship opened fire on our coast guards... They exchanged fire while heading to Lasqorey," Abdirisak Yusuf Aseyr, a Somaliland regional police chief, told AFP by phone.

Local elders said the pirates later anchored the cargo vessel off Lasqorey.

"It's about 10 kilometres (six miles) away from the coast now and there are about 30 of them (pirates) onboard the ship," said Mohamed Adan Dualeh, an elder.

The MV RIM, a general cargo vessel, was captured Wednesday in the Gulf of Aden north of the internationally recommended transit corridor.

The 4,800-tonne cargo ship owned by White Sea Shipping of Libya was not registered with the Horn of Africa Maritime Security Centre, the European Union Naval Force (NAVFOR) said.

Somali pirates hijack Libyan ship - update
Somali pirates have hijacked a Libyan-owned cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, taking its crew of 17 Romanians and Libyans hostage.
Romanian. Doubtless Romania was point of origin.
The MV Rim was seized outside the internationally recommended transit corridor patrolled by the anti-piracy naval coalition, the European Union Naval Force (Navfor) said on Thursday. Kenya-based Ecoterra, which monitors shipping off Somalia, said the 4,800-tonne MV Rim was seized on Tuesday in the strategic channel south of Yemen.

It said it was flying a North Korean flag, but was owned by White Sea Shipping of Tripoli.

"Her crew usually comprises 17 sailors and, based on outdated crew lists, it could be assumed that they are holding Romanian and Libyan nationalities," Ecoterra said. The group said local reports suggested the hijackers were from Somalia's semi-autonomous northern region of Puntland.

"It is assumed the vessel is now commandeered to one of the Puntland pirate lairs," it said in a statement.

A EU counter-piracy force said a coalition ship, the USS Porter, and a helicopter from the USS Farragut confirmed the hijacking, but had no details on the nationalities of the crew.

"The MV Rim ... has now altered course and is heading towards the Somali Basin. Coalition forces will now monitor the situation," Navfor said in a statement.

Africa Subsaharan
African Union says never again to coups
Nope. Never again...
[Al Arabiya Latest] African leaders wrapped up a three-day summit here Tuesday, calling for action on coups and increasing pressure on Madagascar's political foes to honor deals meant to end a prolonged crisis.

The newly elected chairman of the 53-member African Union, President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi, called on his peers to stand against conflicts and toppling of governments.
BINGU!!!
"We must say 'never again' to conflict and war in Africa," said Mutharika, who took the bloc's leadership from Libyan Muammar Gaddafi, whose controversial stance on the continent's issues was often at odds with pan-African body.
Aww, admit it. It was "Sprockets and Sashes Envy"...
"We must declare war on unconstitutional changes of government on African soil and resolve to take strong and necessary measures against all offenders of coups and those that provide them the means to succeed elected governments," Mutharika said.
But now...dinner!
The AU in 2002 replaced the Organization for African Unity (OAU) in 2002, which had been criticized for welcoming dictators and coup leaders into its ranks. The AU tried to distance itself from its predecessor by introducing sanctions against despots.
Timing is everything. And you already got yours, right, boys...

Zuma confirms love child
[Mail and Globe] President Jacob Zuma has put out a statement confirming his child with Irvin Khoza's daughter, while lambasting the media for criticizing him.
I... did... not... have... sex... with... that... woman... Ms... Ooooops. Wait a minute...
Aren't all these John Edwards stories supposed to go under 'Lurid Crime Tales'?
A media storm erupted this past week around weekend reports that Zuma, 67 has fathered a possible 20th child with his old friend and soccer tycoon Irvin Khoza's daughter, Sonono, 39.
Sonono? Sounds like it should be "Soyesyes"...
Golly -- twenty children. What a man, to be sure.
But Zuma on Wednesday confirmed his relationship and his child with Sonono Khoza and added that he had taken responsibility for his actions. "I said during World Aids Day that we must all take personal responsibility for our actions. I have done so. I have done the necessary cultural imperatives in a situation of this nature, for example the formal acknowledgement of paternity and responsibility, including the payment of inhlawulo to the family," Zuma said in a statement issued on his behalf by the presidency.
...and we'll see you all back here next year for the press conference on Number 21.

#3  Old farm joke, seems to apply here.

A Montana rancher got in his pickup and drove to a neighboring ranch and knocked at the door. A young boy, about 9, opened the door "Is your Dad home?" the rancher asked.

"No sir, he isn't," the boy replied. "He went into
town."

"Well," said the rancher, "Is your Mother here?"

"No sir, she's not here either. She went into town with Dad."

"How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?"

"No sir, He went with Mom and Dad."

The rancher stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other and mumbling to himself.

"Is there anything I can do for you?" the boy asked politely. "I know where all the tools are, if you want to borrow one. Or maybe I could take a message for Dad."

"Well," said the rancher uncomfortably, "I really wanted to talk to your Dad. It's about your brother Howard getting my daughter, Suzie, pregnant."'

The boy considered for a moment. "You would have to talk to Pa about that," he finally conceded. "If it helps you any, I know that Pa charges $500 for the bull and $50 for the hog, but I really don't know how much he gets for Howard."

Arabia
Saudi's Reject 'Biggest Dick'
A high level Pakistani diplomat has been rejected as Ambassador of Saudi Arabia because his name, Akbar Zib, equates to "Biggest Dick" in Arabic. Saudi officials, apparently overwhelmed by the idea of the name, put their foot down and gave the idea of his being posted there, the kibosh.

Akbar Zib is no newcomer to politics, in fact you could say he's a pretty big deal. This long-ranging high level diplomat has worked with some of the largest members of world governments, players charged with negotiating the outcome of the world's current events.

He most recently served as High Commissioner Designate of Pakistan to Canada, and prior to that he was the ambassador of Pakistan to South Africa,. He also served in that capacity in Washington from 1983-87, and New Delhi from 1994-2000.

He earlier worked at the Pakistan headquarters as section officer from 1982- 83, director from 1987-94 and director-general from 2000-2003.

Miangul Akbar Zib, also whose name news agencies sometimes refer to as Zib, was born on 15 February, 1954. He holds a Masters degree.

Caribbean-Latin America
Chavez turns to Cubans for help with energy crisis
This is my fish. There are many like it, but this one is mine...
President Hugo Chavez has turned to his friends in Cuba for help in tackling Venezuela's energy crisis, drawing criticism Wednesday from opponents who say that the communist-led island is notorious for its own electricity woes.

The socialist leader announced that Cuban Vice President Ramiro Valdes had arrived on Tuesday to head a Cuban team advising Venezuela on its efforts to reduce energy consumption.

He gave few details of what Valdes would do, but the announcement bewildered some.

"It's laughable that Chavez is looking for help from Cuba," said Aixa Lopez, director of the Committee for People Affected by Power Outages, which monitors the extent of current energy shortages and rationing in Venezuela.
I dunno, few people are better than the ordinary Cuban citizen at making something out of absolutely nothing ...
Chavez blames a drought for bringing the country's crucial hydroelectric reservoirs to their lowest levels in decades, prompting a wave of planned and unplanned blackouts across the country. Critics acknowledge the lack of rainfall, but blame Chavez's government for failing to upgrade power generation capacity even as the country's consumption has soared.
If this keeps up, Joe Kennedy will have to make some new commercials about getting oil from his "new friends in Coo-ba"...

No, tu, this is the people's fish.

As for help with the energy crisis, I believe Cuba can offer Venezuela all kinds of fish. They have many batteries from cars built in the 50's and before. All Venezuela has to do is figure out how to charge them up.

Papa Doc's family to get 'stolen' millions
In an embarrassment to Switzerland's government, the country's top court said Wednesday that at least $4.6 million in Swiss bank accounts previously awarded to charities must be returned to the family of Haiti's ex-dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier.

The decision was unrelated to the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12, killing at least 150,000 people, but the amount of money contested could feed more than a million Haitians for two weeks.

The court's decision was reached hours before the quake but only published Wednesday, prompting the Swiss government to issue an emergency decree to keep the money frozen in a Swiss bank until a new law can be passed allowing it to be donated to aid groups working in Haiti.

Girl buried alive in Turkish honour killing
A 16-YEAR-OLD girl was buried alive by relatives in southeast Turkey in a gruesome honour killing just because she reportedly befriended boys, the Anatolia news agency reported today.

Acting on a tip-off, police discovered Medine Memi's body in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-metre deep hole in a chicken pen outside her house in Kahta town, Adiyaman province, 40 days after she went missing, the agency said.

A subsequent post mortem revealed that she had a significant amount of soil in her lungs and stomach, meaning that she was buried alive, forensic experts told the agency.

"The autopsy result is blood-curdling. According to our findings, the girl, who had no bruises on her body and no sign of narcotics or poison in her blood, was alive and fully conscious when she was buried," one anonymous expert said.

Medine's father and grandfather have been formally arrested and jailed pending trial over her killing, the agency said.

The father is reported to have said in his testimony that the family was unhappy she had male friends.

In honour killings, most prevalent in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast, a so-called family council names a member to murder a female relative considered to have sullied the family honour, usually by engaging in an extra-marital affair.

But the practice has gone so far as to kill rape victims or women who simply talked to strange men.

China-Japan-Koreas
Chinese warn Boeing over Taiwan
China has threatened to sanction firms involved in a US-approved $6.4bn (£4bn) weapons deal with Taiwan. That would include US aerospace giant Boeing, which dominates China's airline market ahead of main rival Airbus. Boeing subsidiary McDonnell Douglas is delivering missiles worth $37m to Taiwan, the US government has said.
Perhaps President Obama should to fly to Beijing and do a full on kowtow.

If we wait, will we owe them less, or be less under thier arrogant thumb?
NOW is the time to remind them they need us to buy their crap. And if we actually cut off all their theft and spying on our industry, gee, we might actually return to being the worlds greatest industrial power, and pay off the debt through the sale of quality merchandise.

#7  Never mind tariffs -- inspect for health and safety issues. Anything that fails, confiscate and destroy the goods, and fine the manufacturer severely. But do give them the opportunity to pay for their own retest, should they so desire, and if the results don't match, let them pay for a third test to confirm, one way or another.

#9  It has been the policy of the U.S. since before Roosevelt (that is Teddy) to engage with China and the Chinese people. There is no reason to change that policy now. We need to accept that they have real security concerns with shipping lanes, crazy Muslims, and uncertain borders.

We should stand up for inalienable human rights and Western values, because without those everything fails as we have observed in countless tyrannical states since ancient times.

We should not worry much about exchange rates, their pathetic client states like Iran, Burma, and North Korea, or their empty threats about Taiwan. Simply opposing these follies with strength and confidence will carry the day

824,000 Jobs Will Disappear on February 5th
When the government releases Friday's employment report, nearly a million jobs could be erased. The change won't show up in the monthly report. Rather, the expected drop will show up in the government's revised job losses from April 2008 to March 2009, showing the labor market was in much worse shape than we knew at the time.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel to seal settler house in east Jerusalem
JERUSALEM (AFP) - Municipal authorities will comply under protest with a court order to seal a Jewish settler's building in mainly Arab east Jerusalem, the mayor's office announced on Thursday.

Rightwing Mayor Nir Barkat pointedly insisted this meant the municipality must tear down 200 homes -- virtually all Palestinian -- built without permits in the same Jerusalem neighbourhood of Silwan.
and he has got a point.
The decision to seal the Jewish house, built illegally in 2004, follows a harsh letter from State Prosecutor Moshe Lador who accused the mayor of deliberately delaying a court order. Sealing a house is seen as a first step towards possible demolition.

In a letter to Lador, Barkat expressed his "most vigorous protest and harsh criticism of the plan," his office said.

In 2007, Jewish settlers were ordered to evacuate the illegally built seven-storey building in the heart of the Palestinian neighbourhood but the eviction order has so far not been enforced. The municipality said it will move to seal the house "despite the severe repercussions this might give rise to."

"It is important to note that carrying out this decision would result in the execution of over 200 demolition orders in the neighbourhood," the statement quoted Barkat as telling Lador.

"Law enforcement activity in Jerusalem, especially in its east, could be highly explosive," Barkat wrote. The demolition of Palestinian homes in Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem has in the past led to clashes.
highly explosive. Did he say that with a straight face?
Many Palestinians in east Jerusalem risk having their homes razed because they were built or expanded without the necessary permits which are nearly impossible to obtain from the Israeli authorities. Several Western countries including the United States and Britain have urged Israel to refrain from such demolitions, to avoid further harming the already hobbled Middle East peace process.

Israel captured east Jerusalem with the rest of the West Bank in the Six Day War of 1967 and annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community. Israel views the whole city as its "eternal, indivisible" capital while the Palestinians are determined to make the city's eastern sector the capital of their promised state.

White House Prepares for Possibility of 2 Supreme Court Vacancies

#1  Court watchers believe two of the more liberal members of the court, justices John Paul Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, could decide to step aside for reasons of age and health. That would give the president his second and third chance to shape his legacy on the Supreme Court.

Last week, when Obama took the nearly unprecedented step of criticizing the court's opinion in a major campaign finance case during his State of the Union speech, some believed he was showcasing for the American people that presidential elections, and Supreme Court nominations count.

#2  It's worrisome in that filling Stevens and Ginsburg's seats will give Ogabe the chance to solidify the existing leftist bloc - I'd bet that he won't consider anyone over age 55 for either vacancy. But I really, really hope that both Kennedy and Scalia shred their paper trash and employ food tasters. If The One gets to replace either of them, it's all over for this country, folks - you might as well replace the 50 stars in the flag with a hammer and sickle.

Olbermann's sinking ship
Has the countdown begun for the end of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann?" With his ratings in free-fall, and his hateful histrionics reaching new highs, even Olbermann's former supporters on the left are tuning out. Bloggers at the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio noted the uberdork's 44 percent drop in listeners ages 25-54 from January 2009 to last month. "Olbermann's showboat is sinking," one LA Times blogger noted. "Listing in you-know-which direction." Jon Stewart ridiculed him on "The Daily Show" for calling Massachusetts Senator-elect Scott Brown a "racist." "There are creeping indications that the world may not have quite as much need of -- or patience for -- Olbermann and his shtick as it once did," Jeff Bercovici wrote on DailyFinance.com. Olbermann struck back at Bercovici, naming him as one of the "Worst People in the World" and mischaracterizing the Web site as "right-wing."

#5  Regardless of his politics, the guy is an arrogant, effeminate, douche. Nobody likes him except the rabid liberal fascists he's thrown his lot in with.

The reality is that MSNBC's strategy of being the anti-FNC is failing miserably. Which casts tremendous doubt on the meme that FNC is some uber-convservtative, right-wing organ of the Republican party. Americans in general do not care for extremism or radicalism in any form, hence the reason why FNC continues it's long-running and impressive ascendancy and MSNBC continues to decline in near direct proportion.
