Convicted Theranos fraudster Elizabeth Holmes must begin prison stint during appeal
[NY Post] Good. She got knocked up to try and play the sympathy card. "Don't jail me! I'm a new Mom!"
Convicted Theranos fraudster Elizabeth Holmes must begin serving her 11-year prison term as scheduled later this month after a federal judge rejected her bid to remain free while she appeals.

US District Judge Edward Davila determined that even if Holmes won her appeal challenging the admission of evidence regarding the accuracy of Theranos’ blood-testing machines, it was unlikely to result in a complete reversal or new trial in her case.

“Contrary to her suggestion that accuracy and reliability were central issues to her convictions, Ms. Holmes’ misrepresentations to Theranos investors involved more than just whether Theranos technology ‘work[ed] as promised.’” Davila wrote.

Davila’s ruling capped a lengthy dispute between the feds and Holmes’ legal team, which had argued she should remain free because her appeal would raise “substantial issues” about her conviction that could result in a new trial.

Last year, Holmes was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for lying to Theranos’ investors about the efficacy of her once-booming startup’s blood-testing technology and finances. The mother of two is slated to report to prison on April 27.

In his ruling, Davila also weighed in on a bombshell allegation from prosecutors alleging that Holmes was a flight risk because she and her partner, William Evans, had booked a one-way trip to Mexico weeks before the jury reached a verdict in her case.

As The Post reported, Holmes’ lawyers had cited the recent birth of her second child as evidence that she was not a flight risk. Holmes had been visibly pregnant during a failed earlier bid to throw out her conviction last year.

Holmes’ stunning fall from grace occurred after reports revealed that Theranos’ machines could not perform many of the functions that she claimed. At one point, the medical tech startup drew a whopping $9 billion valuation.

Next time you see some young person on the cover of Forbes or Fortune magazine, you can almost count on some legal action against them within a few years (while trash financial media runs cover for them).

Feebs: Avoid Using Free Public Charging Stations for Phones
[Epoch Times] "Avoid using free charging stations in airports, hotels or shopping centers," FBI Denver said in an April 6 Twitter post. "Bad actors have figured out ways to use public USB ports to introduce malware and monitoring software onto devices. Carry your own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet instead."

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has also alerted consumers to the dangers of public USB charging stations.

"Cybersecurity experts have warned that criminals can load malware onto public USB charging stations to maliciously access electronic devices while they are being charged. Malware installed through a dirty USB port can lock a device or export personal data and passwords directly to the perpetrator. Criminals can use that information to access online accounts or sell it to other bad actors," the FCC stated.
Gee, I wonder if criminals will be able to hack public charging stations for your green electric vehicle? Steal your payment information, limit your top speed to 55 mph...

Fifth victim dies in Louisville bank massacre: Mom-of-two, 57, passes away after multiple surgeries following 25-year-old shooter's rampage - as bank says it has been left 'devastated'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] BLUF: Democratis Party supporter working at bank run by Democratic Party supporters goes out in a blaze of glory. Follow up to this story from yesterday.
  • The five senior bank executives were shot dead by their former colleague Connor Sturgeon, 25, on Monday

  • Tommy Elliott, the bank's senior vice president, was a friend of Governor Andy Beshear, and had donated $2,000 to his gubernatorial campaign in 2018

  • Sturgeon wounded nine others, including two police officers: he was shot dead by Louisville police

  • He stormed a conference room at Old National Bank at 8.30am - half an hour before the branch opened to the public
Sturgeon, according to authorities, was an employee of the bank who had been fired, or was aware that he was about to lose his job.

He used an AR-15-style rifle and wounded nine people, including two police officers.

During the shooting, it was overheard on police scanners that Sturgeon was 'suicidal and texted a friend that he would 'shoot up the bank.''

Police also confirmed that Sturgeon live-streamed the shooting on his Instagram, which has since been taken down.

The gunman was also killed in the shooting, but it is unclear if he died from a self-inflicted wound or from injuries he sustained as he exchanged gunfire with officers at the scene.

Officers arrived within three minutes and found the shooter still firing, Louisville Metro Police Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey said. They exchanged fire with Sturgeon.

A high school friend said Sturgeon was a star athlete in Indiana, where he excelled at track, football and basketball at his school just across the Ohio river from Louisville. But he suffered multiple concussions and wore a head guard.

Sturgeon's LinkedIn said he completed three summer internships between 2018-2020, before starting work at Old National Bank as a syndications associate and portfolio banker.

'I am certified in the RMA Lending Decision Process, hold a Master's in Finance from the University of Alabama, and am on the Young Professionals board for Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana,' he wrote on his profile.

He also hosted a basketball-focused podcast with two friends, The Daily Beast said, and tweeted about the NBA.

He also posted shows of support for the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, as well as criticism of police violence and of Donald Trump.

Texas man previously exonerated in fatal stabbing arrested for fatal shooting
[NYPOST] Authorities arrested a Texas man — who previously served seven years in prison before he was exonerated for a fatal stabbing he did not commit — for allegedly shooting a fellow motorist in an apparent fit of road rage Thursday.

Lydell Grant was taken into custody Friday for allegedly shooting another driver dead after they got into a minor traffic accident, cops said.

Grant, 46, and a woman were leaving a corner store in a white Lexus sedan when they ran a stop sign and were hit by a Toyota, Houston police said, according to ABC 13.

Grant then stepped out of the car and allegedly fired at the 33-year-old Toyota driver, Edwin Arevalo, before fleeing in the Lexus.

Arevalo was shot at least five times, police said, according to KHOU.

The fatal shooting comes after Grant already spent seven years behind bars after he was previously — and wrongly — convicted of stabbing 28-year-old Aaron Scheerhoorn to death outside a Houston bar in 2012.

Grant was found guilty after six witnesses testified against him at trial, but was declared innocent in May 2021 by a Texas Court of Criminal Appeals after DNA on the victim’s fingernails didn’t match his.

He was serving a life sentence for the crime before he was let out on bond in 2019 to await the appeals court’s decision.

Florida GOP legislator apologizes after calling transgender people 'mutants' and 'demons'
[NBC] A Republican state legislator in Florida apologized Monday after he called transgender people "demons" and "mutants" at a legislative hearing.

State Rep. Webster Barnaby had lashed out at transgender people earlier in the day at a Commerce Committee hearing on the Safety in Private Spaces Act, a bill that would criminalize using restrooms that match people's gender identities when the restrooms don’t match their "biological sex."

Barnaby, who referred to himself as a conservative Christian, staunchly defended the bill, saying he was "not on the fence" about what it would do.

"We have people that live among us today on planet Earth that are happy to display themselves as if they were mutants from another planet. This is the planet Earth with God-created men, male, and women, female," he said.

"That’s right, I called you demons and imps who come and parade before us and pretend that you are part of this world," he added.

Barnaby later offered an apology.

Wrong answer, Chuck. This isn't the fault of the customers, this is the fault of your advertising directors, and those who oversea their actions.

Had advertising done absolutely nothing, there would be no concern. That they dropped this turd at the beginning of winter sports playoffs, summer sports opening, and that it is a popular golf course beer, is hilariously tone deaf.

Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band Guitarist Steven Van Zandt Deletes Call to 'Exterminate' GOP 'Cockroaches'
[BREITBART] Bruce Springsteen’s veteran E-Street band guitarist Steven Van Zandt issued a call to fans and supporters on social media Sunday to "Exterminate the (Republican) cockroaches."

His rallying cry to target GOP supporters, half of America, came during an expletive-laden exchange on Twitter.

It began when the guitarist ventured forth by abusing what he called "Republican White Supremicist scumbag cowards and pussies that need guns to feel like real men" after TN representatives demanded gun controls.

Van Zandt was then called out on Twitter by a follower for his abuse, which he quickly resumed.

He said he deleted his original anti-Republican post for a host of reasons, viz;

See for yourself below.

To avoid spending half my day deleting Foxsucking scumbag Russian bots and MAGOTT cockroaches like you! Go take away some women’s rights, keep some Black people from voting, go harass a Trans event, go shoot some kids, do what Republicans do best and get the fuck outta my feed! https://t.co/5zV1hPEvIz

— 🕉🇺Stevie Van Zandt☮️💙 (@StevieVanZandt) April 9, 2023

This is not the first time Van Zandt has entered the political realm.

As Breitbart News reported in 2016 he declared the best way to punish states passing "really vile and evil" religious freedom legislation is to "hurt them economically."

That came after Springsteen announced he had abruptly canceled a show in Greensboro to protest North Carolina’s LGBT "bathroom law" and Van Zandt spoke to news hounds about the band’s decision to pull the plug on its fans.

"It’s unfortunately the only way people understand. You have to hurt them economically in order to have them do the right thing morally, unfortunately," Van Zandt told Rolling Stone backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York.

"This really vile and evil discrimination is starting to spread state to state and we thought, ’We better take a stand right now and catch it early,’" he said.

FBI documents associate internet slang like 'based' and 'red pill' with 'extremism'
[NYPOST] New documents released Monday warned that common internet lingo is being associated with "Violent Extremism" by the FBI.

The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project said it used a Freedom of Information Act request to expose FBI documents that include glossaries showing that common internet slang has been flagged as an indication of "Involuntary Celibate Violent Extremism" or "Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremism."

Part of the document refers specifically to "incels," or those "involuntary celibate," whom the "threat overview" describes as possibly seeking to "commit violence in support of their beliefs that society unjustly denies them sexual or romantic attention, to which they believe they are entitled."

The assessment notes, "While most incels do not engage in violence," some have been involved in "at least five lethal attacks in the United States and Canada."

Many of the terms mentioned in the FBI’s list of incel terminology are either widely used across the internet or innocuous in nature.

The one term in the glossary is "Red Pill," which comes from the 1999 film "The Matrix" and has been used a metaphor for seeing hidden or politically incorrect truths about the modern world, particularly when it comes to politics or dating.

He wrote, “Our landlord at SF HQ says we’re legally required to keep sign as Twitter & cannot remove “w”, so we painted it background color. Problem solved!
There is no W in either "tempest" or "teapot."
“This will be great for reducing impersonation risk. They tried to muffle our titter.”

Twitter's blue bird was replaced by the Shiba Inu dog meme, which is also the logo of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, but it was observed that this change to Doge is only visible on the web version of Twitter and not on the Twitter app.

Musk had also tweeted a meme of a police officer checking a document, while Doge says it's an old photo.

He also shared a screenshot of a conversation he had with a Twitter user before he took over the company, writing "as promised". In the conversation, Musk asks if there is a need for a new platform, to which the user suggests that Musk should instead buy Twitter and replace the blue bird logo with a Doge.

It was further gathered that the value of Dogecoin went up by almost 30% after Twitter changed its homepage logo to the dog meme.

Since taking over the social media giant last October, Elon Musk has implemented numerous changes. Twitter recently announced that it will discontinue its old verified programme on April 1, requiring users to pay $8 per month for the coveted blue checkmarks.

Tennessee using eminent domain to seize farmland to connect electric truck and battery plants to interstate
[Blaze] The state of Tennessee is using eminent domain to seize land in order to build connecting roads from a new electric truck plant to the interstate, undervaluing the land of local farmers in a series of lawsuits, according to the Tennessee Lookout.

Blue Oval City, an electric truck and battery assembly complex named after the Ford logo, is set to be operational in 2025. The state's department of transportation has planned a new highway to service the massive development, which would allow employees and shipments alike to travel into and out of the area.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the state is looking to purchase or seize 35 separate tracts to construct connections and widenings to link the Ford campus with a new exit to accommodate workers and manufacturing.

The state has taken 15 tracts so far, according to a spokesperson, and is in negotiations with property owners for the remaining 20.

Britain
Sir Tony issues stark warning ahead of President touching down in Belfast
[Express UK] Sir Tony Blair has warned against putting "futile pressure" on the DUP to return to powersharing at Stormont ahead of Joe Biden's visit to Northern Ireland.

The former prime minister spoke of the importance of using "the American influence on the process with care and with sensitivity".

The ex-Labour leader told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: "The Americans can play a real role but it's something that you need to do carefully because there's a difference between influencing and pressurising and the one tends to be positive and the other can be negative.

"One thing I learned about the unionist is if you try and pressurise them to do something that they're fundamentally in disagreement with, it's usually futile pressure, even if it comes from the US, so you've got to use that influence carefully."

The US President is due to arrive in Belfast this evening for the four-day trip to Northern Ireland and Ireland to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

Mr Biden is expected to meet members of Stormont's main political parties as part of a visit he said will underscore his nation's "commitment to preserving peace and encouraging prosperity" in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland dissidents throw molotov cocktails at police vehicles one day before Biden's visit
[FoxNews] Multiple police vehicles were firebombed with molotov cocktails during a dissident republican parade in the Northern Ireland border city of Derry on Monday, one day before President Biden is set to visit the country, according to police.

A group of people in paramilitary uniforms marched through the streets to commemorate the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, in which Irish nationalists launched an armed insurrection in protest of British rule.

Monday also marks the 25-year anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, which ended three decades of the low-intensity civil war known as "the Troubles."

Nigel Goddard, the police chief in Derry, called the violence on Monday a "senseless and reckless attack on our officers."

"What we saw develop this afternoon in Creggan was incredibly disheartening. As the parade was un-notified, police were in attendance with a proportionate policing operation. Sadly, before the parade even started, we observed young people in the vicinity making petrol bombs to throw at police," Goddard said in a statement.

"Shortly after the parade commenced, petrol bombs and other objects were thrown at one of our vehicles at the junction of Iniscarn Road and Linsfort Drive."

Local newspapers reported on Sunday that the Police Service of Northern Ireland disrupted a bomb plot by members of the New IRA, paramilitary splinter group of the Irish Republican Army.

MI5 also upped the terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland from "substantial" to "severe" last month, ahead of the planned celebrations for the Good Friday Agreement's anniversary.

President Biden will meet with UK Prime Minster Rishi Sunak in Belfast on Wednesday to commemorate the Good Friday Agreement, then give a speech at Ulster University before departing for Dublin to meet with Irish President Michael Higgins.

Biden, who is also set to meet with distant relatives during the trip, has frequently commented on how his Irish heritage shaped his life.

"I’m the proud son of Catherine Eugenia Finnegan Biden," Biden said at the annual Friends of Ireland Luncheon last year. "And like so many Americans of Irish heritage, I love Ireland and I was raised in a circumstance where you would have thought my whole family… they came in 1844 and 1845, but you’d think they’d all lived in Ireland the last 60 years — the previous 60 years."

China-Japan-Koreas
China worked out three options for defeating Taiwan
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[REGNUM] During large-scale exercises off the coast of Taiwan, the PRC fleet and aviation worked out in detail the option of forcibly reuniting the island with mainland China, including providing for blocking help from the United States. Does the Chinese army not only have the means, but also the skills for a small victorious war, and will Taiwan have time to cover itself with the Israeli "Iron Dome"?

The People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) held a three-day military exercise in the vicinity of Taiwan. During the Common Sword maneuvers, the strike group of the Chinese Navy worked out actions to blockade the island, which Beijing considers a rebellious province.

The grouping included six ships: the Shandong aircraft carrier, the 055 type destroyer with a displacement of 10,000 tons, the 052D type destroyer, two 054A frigates and the 901 type complex replenishment ship, the official Chinese television channel CCTV listed.

Groups of frigates and destroyers of the Chinese Navy were also involved, which worked out scenarios for pursuing retreating enemy ships and blocking shipping.

The exercises were simultaneously conducted in the Taiwan Strait, as well as in the waters to the northwest, southwest and east of the island of Taiwan. As a result of the maneuvers, the combined naval and air forces managed to completely "seize the initiative in the South China Sea," the Beijing-based English-language edition of the Global Times reported.

According to journalists, the Shandong aircraft carrier group operated east of Taiwan, practicing two tasks: stopping attempts to escape from the island, as well as preventing a breakthrough of reinforcements in the face of the Japanese or US Navy.

The Shandong aircraft carrier, we note, was launched relatively recently, in 2017. This is the second ship of this class and the first built in China itself. The first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, was originally built at the Black Sea shipyard in Nikolaev as a heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser and was called Varyag before completion.

The defense department of the “Republic of China” (as Taiwan officially calls itself) told the Hong Kong South China Morning Post: the army of mainland China also involved Su-30, J-16 fighter jets, Chinese carrier-based J-15 fighters, Shaanxi Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft and drones . Almost 60 aircraft and 11 ships of the PLA were recorded near the island.

In October last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping , speaking at the opening of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China (at which Xi's sole leadership in the party and state apparatus was finally formalized), said: China is striving for peaceful reunification with Taiwan, but does not abandon the military option to resolve the issue. "National reunification will definitely be done" .

As Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics Vasily Kashin noted in a comment to REGNUM news agency ,

The establishment of a naval blockade is one of the most likely scenarios in which the Chinese army can carry out an operation to take Taiwan under its control.

“There are different views on how the PLA operation in Taiwan could develop. There are suggestions that China will try to conduct a lightning operation that will be aimed at achieving the goals of preventing the transfer of US forces to Asia, ” Kashin said.

But, the expert added, it is worth noting that the Chinese army has no combat experience since the border war with Vietnam in February-March 1979. “The last people who participated in it were some senior officers and generals who managed to catch this war in the positions of platoon commanders, companies, maximum battalions. Since then, they have not participated in large-scale hostilities, ” Kashin noted.

“Therefore, there is a strong possibility that the landing on Taiwan, which is the largest amphibious operation since the Second World War or the Korean War, will not succeed. Because when using huge forces and means, a lot can go wrong,” the source said.

Hence the second option arises, Kashin noted. “A blockade attempt may be made with the gradual capture of small islands near the main island of Taiwan, and only after that a large-scale landing operation ,” the expert noted.

In mid-August last year, the PLA Air Force conducted maneuvers in the Taiwan-controlled Penghu archipelago (also known as the Pescadores Islands), which is located in the Taiwan Strait south of the main island. After that, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen visited the "Republic of China" air force base deployed in the archipelago and announced an increase in military spending to a record amount of 586.3 billion Taiwan dollars (19.4 billion US dollars), RIA Novosti reported .

In addition to the amphibious assault in Taiwan or in the peripheral archipelagos, the PLA command is considering the possibility of launching a large-scale missile strike - this follows from the Global Times report on the results of the Common Sword exercise.

The conditional launch of the missiles was carried out by ships of the Chinese Navy in tandem with coastal-based missile and assault groups and aviation. The strike was launched simultaneously from the territory of the PRC, as well as from areas north, east and south of Taiwan.

The targets of the training launches were the positions of the island army - the Taiwan Self-Defense Forces, airfields, communication centers, as well as mobile targets, Zhao Xiaozhuo, a researcher at the PLA Academy of Military Sciences, explained to the Global Times .

Earlier, the Chinese authorities have repeatedly announced their intention to inflict such a crushing blow, but the Western media urges not to pay special attention to these threats. But, as Kashin noted, a large-scale missile attack on Taiwan is by no means a bluff, but one of the most likely scenarios for the development of the conflict.

“China ranks first in the world in terms of the number of medium and short-range cruise ballistic missiles, ” the source recalled. “ They also hold the first place in terms of the number of long-range multiple rocket launchers capable of striking at a distance of up to 200 km. When using special types of missiles - at a distance of about 500 km.

That they are capable of launching an impressive number of missiles at Taiwan is an obvious fact. And what’s more, Taiwan has no way to repel such a strike with the available forces and means of anti-missile defense.”

The United States is aware of the threat of a large-scale missile attack on Taiwan, in connection with which it is actively taking measures to strengthen the air defense and missile defense system of the unrecognized (including those not recognized by Washington) island state. In 2022, the US State Department approved the allocation of funds for the purchase of Patriot complexes, Reuters reported .

But the ability of these systems to repel large-scale rocket attacks is seriously limited, as shown by the experience of their use during the conflict between Yemen and Saudi Arabia. A possible solution to the task of protecting Taiwan from a missile threat would be the deployment of Israeli Iron Dome missile defense systems on the island. According to some reports, which, in particular, were voiced by The Wall Street Journal , the US Army command is developing scenarios to repel a Chinese missile attack using these complexes. However, according to Kashin, Taiwan should not rely on the supply of Israeli weapons.

“Such rumors may appear, but there are doubts that Israel will supply weapons to Taiwan,” the source said. “ Israel did not even go for direct deliveries of weapons to Ukraine. And China has the most powerful leverage on Israel. China is the most powerful partner in politics and economics for the rest of the Middle East, which are generally unfriendly towards Israel. Therefore, the likelihood that they will supply arms to Taiwan, even if the supplies are mediated by the United States, is small.”

It can be stated that Taiwan and its allies at the current stage will find it difficult to resist Chinese firepower. Beijing is well aware of the weaknesses in the enemy's defense, and the Common Sword military exercises have shown that China is ready to take back Taiwan by military means. However, the final decision of this issue remains with the political leadership of the country.

AP sources: EPA car rule to push huge increase in EV sales
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration will propose strict new automobile pollution limits this week that would require at least 54% of new vehicles sold in the U.S. to be electric by 2030 and as many as two of every three by 2032, according to industry and environmental officials briefed on the plan.

The proposed regulation, to be released Wednesday by the Environmental Protection Agency, would set greenhouse gas emissions limits for the 2027 through 2032 model years for passenger vehicles that would be even stricter than goals the auto industry agreed to in 2021.

Ranks of Big Tech and Social Media Companies Are Crawling With 'Former' FBI, CIA, DHS Employees
[Daily Caller via Gateway] Big tech seems to love big government.

Tech companies and social media companies are now home to hundreds of former employees of the FBI, CIA, DHS and more, according to a new investigation.

Be careful who you share with on these sites, you never know who you might be talking to.

The Daily Caller reports:

Hundreds Of Former Feds Have Flocked To Jobs In Big Tech

Google, Twitter, Meta and TikTok’s executive ranks have included over 200 former employees of surveillance government agencies, creating an employment pipeline between the government and Big Tech companies, a Daily Caller investigation found.

The technology companies recruited 248 employees from the DOJ, FBI, CIA and DHS, a LinkedIn search revealed. The hiring occurred mostly between 2017-2022, with several filling top director positions after having decade-long careers in the surveillance agencies.

Google hired 130 former DOJ, DHS, CIA and FBI employees, the Daily Caller’s key term search on LinkedIn found. Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, employed 47 people for those three entities who were previously at the DOJ, FBI or DHS. TikTok, the Chinese-based app embattled with national security concerns, employed 25 former DOJ, FBI, DHS or CIA employees. Twitter had 46 executives who had previously spent time working for the three-letter agencies.

Reed Rubinstein, former deputy associate attorney general under President Trump, told the Daily Caller that Americans should be "concerned" about "terrifying" integration of Big Tech companies and federal agencies.

"The revolving door has been a feature of D.C. for as long as I can remember. Any business that is heavily regulated is going to be concerned about managing the regulators, and one way to do that is by purchasing them," Rubinstein said.
