Escaped double murderer Danelo Cavalcante caught after two-week manhunt
[NY Post] Convicted killer and escaped convict Danelo Cavalcante was nabbed by authorities Wednesday after evading search teams for two weeks by breaking into suburban homes for food and hiding out in the Pennsylvania woods.

Cavalcante — who escaped from the Chester County Prison on Aug. 31 — was arrested without incident and escorted into a van by a SWAT team shortly before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, as the search entered its 14th day, law enforcement sources told CNN.

Footage showed the double murderer wearing a gray Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt, which was cut off by officers, presumably to search for hidden weapons.

The investigators took pictures of his tattoos once his shirt was off, to confirm his identity, news station KYW-TV reported.

Residents in the area were alerted to his arrest via a reverse 911 call, CNN reported.

At the time of his arrest, Cavalcante was still in possession of a .22-caliber rifle he stole from a homeowner’s garage Monday night, officials said.

Washington DC so crime-ravaged locals are driving tiny distances instead of walking, are too scared to go out during the day, as woke city sees homicides spike by 29% in a YEAR
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • There have been 190 murders in Washington DC this year, putting the city on track this year to overtake 2021 - with 227 - as the bloodiest in two decades

  • Homicides are falling in New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia - and Baltimore is hopeful to have under 300 murders for the first time since 2015

  • Residents of the nation's capital say they are changing their routines, avoiding going out at night, and driving to avoid falling victim to crime

#1  The causes of DC's crime wave are complex to pinpoint.

This articles throw away line is why the issue exists. It is not complex; it is political. The people in charge cannot admit their policy and budget mistakes to fix the issue. maybe the Mayor should visit El Salvador and have a conversation how they had no murders for the last several hundred days.

#4  I lived in Arlington, VA in 1968, and we had a 13th floor apartment at the River House facing the entire DC skyline. I watched the smoke rise from the King assassination race riots and the burning of the Georgia Avenue corridor from my bedroom in disbelief. The Virginia State Police closed the 14th, Memorial and Key Bridge accesses with road-blocks and no vehicles with DC plates driven by black youth were permitted into Virginia. There was some local outcry at first but they simply didn't care! Oddly, not a single fire or commercial storefront was damaged as a result.

Johnson deployed federal troops rather quickly and that ended it: (Wike cite)- ..."On Friday, April 5, President Johnson invoked the Insurrection Act of 1807 and dispatched 11,850 federal troops along with 1,750 D.C. Army National Guardsmen to assist the overwhelmed D.C. police force.[16] Marines mounted machine guns on the steps of the Capitol and Army soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Regiment guarded the White House. The 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, North Carolina and 6th Cavalry Regiment from Fort Meade, Maryland were among the principal federal forces sent to the city. At one point, on April 5, rioting reached within two blocks of the White House before rioters retreated. The occupation of Washington was the largest of any American city since the Civil War.

Federal troops and National Guardsmen imposed a strict curfew, worked riot control, patrolled the streets, guarded looted stores, and provided aid to those who were displaced by the rioting. They continued to remain after the rioting had officially ceased to protect against a second riot and further damage."

Shocking video shows zombie-like addicts at 'ground zero' of Philadelphia's 'tranq' epidemic
Meh. I'm not shocked. Are you? We've seen it before. They should know better by now. Sympathy meter reads zero or less.
[NYPOST] Distressing new video shows addicts stumbling in a trance-like state along sidewalks strewn with burning trash heaps at the epicenter of Philadelphia’s "tranq" drug epidemic. The Kensington neighborhood in northeast Philadelphia, which has become notorious for its open-air drug market, is seen crowded with hordes of drug-addled people — many of them sprawled barefoot on the filthy ground, or slumped over in the video posted on TikTok by thebizzleeffect.

Some of the addicts appear to have no control over their bodies as they are seen hunched over and struggling to remain on their feet.

Others are seen passed out on random stoops, or in one of the many makeshift homeless encampments dotting the crime-ridden neighborhood.

Piles of garbage — some engulfed in flames — are seen littering the streets of Kensington, where men and women living with crippling drug addiction fight to survive.

Most of Kensington’s zombie-like inhabitants do not have tents and sleep directly on the ground amid clumps of refuse, with their meager possessions stuffed into plastic bags, shopping carts, backpacks or laundry baskets.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
2 more US synagogues targeted by fake bomb threats ahead of High Holidays
[IsraelTimes] Congregation Beth Am in northern Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, and Congregation B’nai Israel in central Florida both threatened over the weekend, following dozens of similar instances

At least two more synagogues in the United States evacuated their congregants over the weekend following bomb threats, the latest in a series of such calls that have put dozens of congregations on high alert heading into the High Holidays.

One of the synagogues was threatened during pre-Rosh Hashanah Selichot services on Saturday night, in a sign that the perpetrators of the wave of attacks are paying careful attention to when synagogues are holding events before calling in their threats.

Since mid-July, at least 49 synagogues in 13 states have received the threatening calls, none of which have been linked to credible bomb threats, according to the Anti-Defamation League. That was up from 26 congregations four weeks ago —and the ADL expects the threats to continue when the High Holidays begin with the start of Rosh Hashanah on Friday evening.

"Every weekend this network of swatters continues to identify targets and are calling in fake bomb threats," Oren Segal, vice president of the ADL’s Center on Extremism, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, using a term referring to pranks that draw out a large number of coppers. "So that number is increasing and will potentially keep increasing."

Segal said the calls are part of a coordinated campaign orchestrated by antisemitic trolls and focused on synagogues that livestream their services, so the perpetrators can watch reactions to the threats in real time. But he noted that some institutions have been targeted even though they don’t livestream their events, and that the culprits are also developing a growing interest in non-Jewish institutions such as mosques and Black churches.

The synagogues that received bomb threats this weekend were Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills, California, in the Bay Area, and Congregation B’nai Israel in St. Petersburg, Florida. In both cases, the synagogues emptied out as police conducted full safety sweeps of the premises.

The threat against Beth Am, a Reform congregation, was called in during Friday night services, at a time when the synagogue was hosting US Rep. Anna Eshoo
...Democratic Congresswomen-for-Life from Caliphornia, representing Silicon Valley. She began her career as chairman of the San Mateo Democratic Party in 1978, and was first elected to Congress in 1993. When she leaves she'll probably be carried out...
and Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of the liberal Israel lobby J Street. Both guests were reported safe by leaders of the Bay Area congregation.

"As a community, we remain resolute and determined in the face of this act of antisemitic harassment," read a letter Beth Am congregational leaders sent to their community just before midnight on Friday, after the synagogue had been swept and cleared, according to J. The Jewish News of Northern California, which first reported on the incident.

B’nai Israel, a Conservative congregation, received the threat as congregants were exiting the Selichot services on Saturday night. The St. Petersburg police department and B’nai Israel’s rabbi, Philip Weintraub, confirmed details of the synagogue’s evacuation with JTA.

"It was not disruptive to our worship," Weintraub told JTA, adding that the police "took it very seriously."

A spokesperson for the St. Petersburg Police Department told JTA that the investigation was still ongoing, but that law enforcement would treat the incident as a false bomb threat, which is punishable with prison time. Florida has grappled with a recent rise in antisemitic activity, and a new state law aims to make it easier to prosecute "ethnic intimidation." But that measure hasn’t yet succeeded in curbing a statewide epidemic of antisemitic flyers, some of which were dropped outside the West Palm Beach area over Labor Day.

The Santa Clara County sheriff’s office, which oversees law enforcement in Los Altos Hills, did not return JTA requests for comment on its own bomb threat investigation.

In mid-August, two other synagogues in California also evacuated their livestreamed Shabbat services over a single weekend due to bomb threats.

There have been other evacuations of Jewish institutions that have gone unreported because they have chosen not to publicize them, Segal said.

"They don’t want to necessarily, I presume, give these trolls the satisfaction of letting everybody know every time they’re evacuated," he said, adding that institutions should make such decisions "based on what they think is best for the community." In some instances, when synagogues have issued a statement about an evacuation, the perpetrators have used those statements to boast of their success, Segal said.

This is not the first time false bomb threats have been called into a series of Jewish institutions. More than 100 such threats were called into Jewish community centers in the early months of 2017 — most of which, it was later discovered, came from a teen in Israel. In 2020, dozens of JCCs received a separate series of emailed bomb threats.

Miami Jewish school evacuated amid bomb threat

[IsraelTimes] The Scheck Hillel Community School is evacuated due to reports of an "explosive alert," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials tell local 10 News.

Officials say it’s possible that it was a swatting incident, but they have not yet ruled out other possibilities.

Parents tell 10 News that students are moved to the school field after hearing a bang.

Women lost their lives so I can be naked at Fashion Week, says Julia Fox

[NYPOST] For New York Fashion Week, Julia Fox first posed nearly naked in a Seks metal bikini hanging by threads of silver chains.

The next day, she wore wristwatches as a bra top with a matching mini skirt by Hodakova.

Then she busted out black leather pasties and a torso-baring corset with skin-tight leather leggings falling far below the belt by day and took the night in a white leather mini skirt and cleavage-baring corset.

Now Fox, the 33-year-old who catapulted to mainstream fame with "Uncut Gems," and had a very public relationship with rapper Kanye West, is defending her right to bare all.

"Women bit the dust so that we can dress like that," Fox exclusively told The Post Friday in Soho.
Why, yes. I remember when battalions of wimmin stormed the barricades to establish their right to run around nekkid.... Sorry. I was having a Biden Moment there. Actually, while I love women generically, the nekkider the better, I can't quite comprehend the uncontrollable urges of lotsa people to show all, whether the rest of us want to see it or not. I've never read The Handmaid's Tale, but I'm starting to wish it had never been written, since so many women who lack any vestige of imagination seem fixated on it. Maybe they should try a few days wearing an abaya or a burka in a hot climate. Under their anti-Western attire they could wear wrist watches or even digital clocks as bras and bandaids as underpants.

Rescuers retrieve hundreds of bodies in eastern Libya as 10,000 reported missing in deadly floods
[NYPOST] Rescue teams struggled amid devastation in eastern Libya, retrieving hundreds of bodies from the rubble in a coastal city that has been inundated by devastating floods, a humanitarian agency said Tuesday.

Authorities estimated that as many as 2,000 people are believed dead in the city of Derna alone.

Mediterranean storm Daniel caused havoc and flash flooding in many towns in eastern Libya but the worst destruction was in Derna, where heavy rainfall and floods broke dams and washed away entire neighborhoods, authorities said.

Tamer Ramadan, Libya envoy for the International Federation of Red Thingy and Red Islamic Thingy Societies, said 10,000 people were missing after the unprecedented flooding.

Speaking to news hounds at a U.N. briefing in Geneva via videoconference from Tunisia, he said the corpse count was "huge" and expected to reach into the thousands in the coming days.

MGM Resorts: Slot machines go down in cyber-attack on firm
[BBC] Customers have reported problems with slot machines and online room booking systems following a cyber-attack on casino and hotel giant MGM Resorts.

Certain systems were shut down due to a "cyber-security issue", the firm said.

But it added that its facilities remained "operational".

One customer at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas said she had walked into the wrong room because the hotel's digital keys were malfunctioning, and said staff had to distribute physical keys.

Staff offered her a complimentary stay as compensation, she told the BBC.

She also posted a video on TikTok of slot machines and gambling games at the resort switched off.

Other people have taken to social media to complain about cancelled reservations, not being able to check in, make card payments or log in to their MGM accounts. One customer said he'd had to leave the MGM Grand in order to find cash to buy food.

In a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, MGM Resorts said it had begun an investigation "with assistance from leading external cybersecurity experts".

"We also notified law enforcement and took prompt action to protect our systems and data, including shutting down certain systems," the statement said.

The company said its investigation was ongoing with the "nature and scope" of the cyber-attack still to be determined.

In a subsequent statement it said: "Our resorts including dining, entertainment and gaming are still operational.

"Our guests continue to be able to access their hotel rooms and our Front Desk is ready to assist our guests as needed," it added.

The company's main website is down. A message on its homepage says the site is "currently unavailable" and directs customers to contact the company via the phone, or through third-party websites.

Similar messages are displayed on websites for the firm's resorts. It owns hotels and casinos across the US, including some of the best-known locations in Las Vegas.

This is the second time in recent years that MGM Resorts has confirmed a cyber-security incident.

In 2019, one of the company's cloud services was breached, and hackers stole more than 10 million customer records. People's names, addresses and passport numbers were taken.

It is not yet known whether similar data has been stolen as a result of this latest cyber-attack.

Biden plan would overhaul 151-year-old mining law, make companies pay royalties for copper and gold
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is recommending changes to a 151-year-old law that governs mining for copper, gold and other hardrock minerals on U.S.-owned lands, including making companies for the first time pay royalties on what they extract.

A plan led by the Interior Department also calls for the creation of a mine leasing system and coordination of permitting efforts among a range of federal agencies. This comes as The White House has been pushing to boost domestic mining for minerals needed for electric vehicles, solar panels and other clean energy.

Under terms of an 1872 law, the U.S. does not collect royalties on minerals extracted from federal lands, a fact Democratic lawmakers and environmental groups have long lamented. The White House plan would impose a variable 4% to 8% net royalty on hardrock minerals produced on federal lands. The proposal needs approval by Congress — unlikely when the House is controlled by Republicans who have long opposed such fees.

Undeterred by such political reality, an interagency working group — led by Interior — touted the benefits of imposing royalties on about 750 hardrock mines on federal lands, mostly in the West. The figure does not include about 70 coal mines whose owners must pay federal royalties.

Big Economic News This Week - Starts off bad
[Axios] Americans' real incomes fell in 2022 from the previous year, new Census data show, as record-high inflation took a bite out of our paychecks.

Why it matters: The decline explains why Americans have felt so meh about the strong economy over the past couple years.

  • To be clear: It's hard to be amped up about the economy when you're making less money (and prices are soaring.)

  • It's another reason why the White House's Bidenomics pitch, an attempt to tell a feel-good story about the economy, seems to have fallen flat so far.

By the numbers: Real median household income fell by 2.3% to $74,580.
Later this week, CPI, then PPI, then maybe an auto worker strike.

Based on Cleveland Federal Reserve Nowcasts, CPI and PPI will be higher than last month which could bum the stock market. But the biggie is whether the auto workers strike which could also come this week.

EU announces an investigation into Chinese subsidies for electric vehicles
BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union is launching an investigation into subsidies that China provides to electric vehicle makers, the head of the bloc’s executive branch said Wednesday, as concern grows that the aid is harming European companies.

"Global markets are now flooded with cheaper Chinese electric cars, and their price is kept artificially low by huge state subsidies. This is distorting our market," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, France.

"As we do not accept this distortion from the inside in our market, we do not accept this from the outside," von der Leyen said. "So, I can announce today that the commission is launching an anti-subsidy investigation into electric vehicles coming from China."

China’s leaders have helped make the country the biggest market for electric vehicles by investing billions of dollars in subsidies to get an early lead in what is seen as a promising industry.

Global automakers face growing competition in their home regions from Chinese brands that are taking market share.

Government Corruption
Whistleblower: CIA Offered COVID Origins Investigators Money to Change Their Views
[PJ] There’s a shocking development in the COVID origins saga. A CIA whistleblower is alleging that the agency offered "significant monetary incentives" to a team of agents investigating the origins of COVID-19 to change their final determination that a lab leak was responsible for the pandemic.

The allegations are contained in a letter written to the CIA by House Coronavirus Subcommittee Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio).

The whistleblower is described as a "multi-decade, senior-level, current Agency officer. He told Congress that the CIA assigned seven officers to a "COVID Discovery team," which consisted of "multi-disciplinary and experienced officers with significant scientific expertise."

"According to the whistleblower, at the end of its review, six of the seven members of the Team believed that intelligence and science were sufficient to make a low confidence assessment that COVID-19 originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China," Wenstrup and Turner wrote.

"The seventh member of the Team, who also happened to be the most senior, was the one officer to believe COVID-19 originated through zoonosis."

"The whistleblower further contends that to come to the eventual public determination of uncertainty, the other six members were given a significant monetary incentive to change their position," they added.

Justin Trudeau's G20 Disaster: Scolded by Narendra Modi, Stranded in India by Faulty Plane
[Breitbart] Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi scolded Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G20 summit in New Delhi, India, on Sunday because Canada allows Sikh groups to promote what Modi described as “secessionism.”

After defending Canada’s commitment to freedom of expression, Trudeau found himself stuck in India due to “technical issues” with his plane.

The Indian government released a statement about Modi’s conversation with Trudeau regarding Sikh demonstrations, a persistent sticking point in relations between India and Canada.

According to the statement, Modi told Trudeau that Sikh demonstrators in Canada are “promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship.”

Modi added that strained relations between Canada and India could not be improved unless Trudeau’s government takes steps to rein in the Sikh secessionists, also known as the “Khalistan movement.”

Modi warned Trudeau that the Khalistan movement has links to organized crime, drugs, and human trafficking, which should be Canadian security concerns as much as they are Indian concerns.

“It is essential for the two countries to cooperate in dealing with such threats,” Modi said.

The Times of India (TOI) reported that Trudeau sought a formal bilateral meeting with Modi, but his request was refused, and the Canadian prime minister had to settle for a brief, informal “pull-aside” at the G20 summit.

TOI added that India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar was even more critical of the Canadians, blasting them for “vote-bank politics” that make local officials reluctant to alienate well-heeled and politically organized Khalistan activists in their districts.

Jaishankar has warned that India would “have to respond if activities in Canada impinged on India’s security and integrity.”

“Khalistan” is the name of a Sikh separatist movement and the name of a prospective Sikh nation the movement wishes to carve out of India’s Punjab region. Canada has the largest population of Sikhs outside of India, so Sikh issues are often reflected in Canadian political activism.

The militant wing of the Khalistan movement has been responsible for some mayhem over the years, and the Indian government has used force to suppress it, including the 1984 killing of movement founder Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale and a large number of his followers in a Sikh temple.

Indira Gandhi, the Indian prime minister who commissioned the assault on Bhindrawale’s temple, was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards later that year. In June 2023, Modi’s government was outraged when Canada permitted Sikh activists in Brampton to display a parade float that glorified Gandhi’s assassination. The float showed Gandhi’s bodyguards pumping bullets into her blood-soaked body beneath a poster that said “REVENGE.”

On Sunday, the leader of a U.S.-based Khalistani group called Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) used a rally in Canada to make death threats against Modi, Jaishankar, and several other Indian politicians.

“This is a message to those who assassinated Hardeep Singh Nijjar. We are calling for your critical death … Modi, Jaishankar, Doval, Shah, we are coming for you,” said SFJ Chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

Amit Shah is the Union Home Minister of India, while Ajit Doval is Modi’s National Security Adviser.

Hardeep Singh Nijar was a prominent Sikh leader and Khalistani activist in Canada who was murdered by masked gunmen outside a temple in British Columbia in June 2023. Some Sikh activists believe the Indian government ordered Nijar’s killing. Large Sikh rallies in Canada branded Indian diplomats as Nijar’s “killers,” raising concerns about their safety.

Trudeau responded to Modi’s criticism in New Delhi by giving a press conference in which he defended Canada’s traditions of “freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, and peaceful protest.” Trudeau’s enthusiasm for those freedoms diminishes quite a bit when he is the target of the protests, as Freedom Convoy truckers who demonstrated against his draconian coronavirus policies can attest.

Trudeau’s office said on Sunday that his return to Canada from New Delhi was delayed because of unspecified “technical issues” with his plane.

Small modular nuclear reactor project in Virginia to enter new phase
[JustTheNews] Gov. Glenn Youngkin has advocated non-carbon-emitting energy technologies, like hydrogen generation and nuclear energy.

The LENOWISCO Planning Commission is deep into the research phase investigating the possibility of Southwest Virginia becoming the home of one – or several – small modular nuclear reactors, a venture catalyzed by the governor’s energy plan.

Former Gov. Ralph Northam is known for some sweeping reforms he initiated in office, and his energy policies were no exception. Northam’s administration established policies that, like California, outlaw the sale of gas-powered cars in the commonwealth starting in 2035 and demand 100% zero-carbon, renewable energy generation by 2050—five years after California.

Youngkin’s response has been to devise a more moderate energy plan that doesn’t abandon the pursuit of alternative energies but attempts to relax the timeline, much of the plan has not yet made it into passing legislation. He’s also advocated exploring other non-carbon-emitting energy technologies, like hydrogen generation and nuclear energy.

In particular, he wants Virginia to invest in small modular reactors or SMRs – in theory, less cost-prohibitive than larger nuclear power plants. The Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a design for SMRs in the U.S. in January.

Youngkin unveiled his “all-American, all-of-the-above” energy plan in October 2022 in Lynchburg and announced that it included a “moonshot”: “Build[ing] a small, modular reactor that will supply baseload demands within the next 10 years.”

This now-famous statement prompted members of the LENOWISCO Planning Commission to get to work. LENOWISCO, an acronym for Lee, Wise and Scott counties and the independent city of Norton, all of which comprise part of Southwest Virginia.

In a study funded by the Virginia Department of Energy and GO Virginia Region One, Dominion Engineering, Inc. (no affiliation with Dominion Energy) assessed the feasibility of seven sites in Southwest Virginia: Bullit Mine complex, Limestone Mine, abandoned mine land in Lee County, Mineral Gap, Project Intersection, Red Onion Industrial Park and Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center. All seven ended up being viable.

“It was a blanket feasibility study to determine, ‘Okay, does our region have what it takes for SMRs?’ We didn’t know. We really weren’t sure,” Miller told The Center Square.

“We were surprised just how feasible the area actually is…We’re either equal to or better than a lot of the sites that are in other parts of the country.”

Though months have passed, Miller said the commission’s goal is to fully evaluate all the sites and present all viable options to energy companies interested in investing rather than narrowing down the selection now.

The commission has started a supply chain study and is about to dive into a public outreach period to gather area residents’ feedback about the sites.

Miller anticipates the commission will be finished with both tasks before the end of the year, likely in December.

At that point, if they haven’t already, they will reach out to more providers – but otherwise, the preliminary work needed to get the project off the ground will be complete. Miller emphasizes that providers could choose one or none of the sites evaluated in the study; they could bypass the region altogether or choose another currently unlisted site.

Special mosquitoes are being bred to fight dengue. How the old enemies are now becoming allies
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — For decades, preventing dengue fever in Honduras has meant teaching people to fear mosquitoes and avoid their bites. Now, Hondurans are being educated about a potentially more effective way to control the disease — and it goes against everything they’ve learned.

Which explains why a dozen people cheered last month as Tegucigalpa resident Hector Enriquez held a glass jar filled with mosquitoes above his head, and then freed the buzzing insects into the air. Enriquez, a 52-year-old mason, had volunteered to help publicize a plan to suppress dengue by releasing millions of special mosquitoes in the Honduran capital.

The mosquitoes Enriquez unleashed in his El Manchen neighborhood — an area rife with dengue — were bred by scientists to carry bacteria called Wolbachia that interrupt transmission of the disease. When these mosquitoes reproduce, they pass the bacteria to their offspring, reducing future outbreaks.

This emerging strategy for battling dengue was pioneered over the last decade by the nonprofit World Mosquito Program, and it is being tested in more than a dozen countries. With more than half the world’s population at risk of contracting dengue, the World Health Organization is paying close attention to the mosquito releases in Honduras, and elsewhere, and it is poised to promote the strategy globally.
