VDH: Democrat Dilemmas
[PJMedia] Here is the problem with the old-style Obama strategy of slicing and dicing the electorate into aggrieved minorities and then gluing them back together to achieve a 51% majority. On almost every issue in this election that they should be running on, they simply cannot. And on those that they are running on, they probably should not be.

Let me explain.

...I am cautiously optimistic about Tuesday, even without a major Republican blowout. Of course, we should not assume that just because the race/class/gender wars of the Democrats are absurd that they will finally fail this time around. Who, after all, could be so confident in an America of 2014 that has been conditioned for six years to identify people by appearance and assumed identity rather than by their character and achievement?

My point is, instead, that about half the country is tired of a failed foreign policy, a failed economic recovery, and a failed big and corrupt government. All the venom and the smears cannot hide that fact. The fed-up half is nearing 51% of the electorate. Democrats embraced the Obama-style community-organizing in hundreds of elections, given the failed substance of Obama himself — and yet still will not quite win lots of races. On Tuesday we shall see whether Americans would prefer to be poorer, fleeced, and less safe just as long as they are not smeared as racists, sexists, homophobes, greedy, and selfish.

In politics, if you lose more races than you win, it doesn’t matter that you lost most of them by 51-49%.

You are still a loser.
IMO, the Obama regime operates on the principle "Votes don't count until they're counted."

#1  Though more than half the country thinks things are going badly, they almost always blame the other guy and re-elect their own. No reason to expect much difference this time.

#2  Why don’t Sens. Landrieu, Pryor, and Udall play up their support for the Obama economy?

Because most people realize the socialists have created an economic house of cards? And because the employment figures coming out of Washington are phoney? Because most people sense that Washington has run out of other people's money?

Can Obama Reboot?
[Politico] "A list of people most likely to replace the departed isn’t easy to draw up, not with the lure of a Clinton campaign, big cash in the private sector, the perception of insularity and resistance to outsiders and the run-of-the-mill reality that winding down a presidency is a thankless, enervating business."
Political animals are not "go down with the ship"-types.

#2  Um, how would "President Biden" be an improvement?

#3  Optimistic. There's too much golf left in him, and too much vacationing and shopping for her.

#4  Regarding Biden. Ford wasn't the Vice President and yet he was quickly maneuvered into the Presidency after Nixon's resignation.
Posted by: rjschwarz || 11/03/2014 9:46 Comments || Top||

#5  So Biden resigns (due to health reasons), & is replaced by Sen. Warren, confirmed by lame-duck Senate, and then Obama resigns. Then Warren can run as the incumbent in '16 and for re-election, for a total of 10 years as socialist dictator.
Posted by: Glenmore || 11/03/2014 9:54 Comments || Top||

#6  Biden would have to pick Warren as Veep first. Otherwise the rules of succession still apply.

#8  VP Agnew resigned. Ford appointed to replace him. Then Nixon resigned & Ford became President. Ford then appointed Rockefeller as VP. Or at least that's how I remember it.

#11  Nixonian time line:
Agnew resigned 10/10/73
Nixon nominated Ford for VP 10/12/73
Senate confirmed Ford 92-3 11/27/73
House confirmed Ford 387-35 12/6/73
Ford sworn in as VP 12/6/73
Nixon resigned 8/9/74
Ford sworn in as President 8/9/74
Ford nominated Rockefeller for VP 8/20/74
Ford pardoned Nixon 9/8/74
Rockefeller sworn in as VP 12/19/74

#12  Can Obama Reboot? well he does have a reset button somewhere. It didn't seem to work as expected but you know.

#13  Um, how would "President Biden" be an improvement?

He at least thinks he is nominally American. Can't say that for the rest of the Obama cabal.

#14  What CS said.

With emphasis on "nominally."

India-Pakistan
Wagah attack
[DAWN] IT was an attack that was waiting to happen. While few would have thought that the Wagah border, where an aggressive closing ceremony each evening is meant to whip up nationalist fervour, would be the target of the biggest attack yet by forces of Evil since the start of the military's Operation Zarb-e-Azb
..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)...
, it is also true that it is the security forces and installations that are usually singled out by the krazed killers. However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
while ordinary civilians often end up as victims because they happen to be near the venue, yesterday's suicide kaboom raises the possibility of those who had come to watch the ceremony being deliberately targeted because of their perceived support for the security forces. The attack has claimed dozens of lives, and the focus at the moment should be on ensuring the injured survive and that the families of the dead are taken care of. After that though the hard questions will have to be taken up once more -- if the state's security and foreign policy apparatus is willing to reflect on what the Wagah incident could mean for the country going forward.

The country clearly continues to be stalked by a complex, overlapping and dizzyingly varied krazed killer threat. If internal security -- peace, stability and the conditions for economic and social progress -- is elusive it is because the state -- the sum total of the civilian government and army-led security establishment -- has an inadequate approach. Even with the best policies in the world, Pakistain will not overnight become internally stable and secure. Operation Zarb-e-Azb has been treated as some kind of panacea in certain quarters, when, without a supporting anti-militancy narrative, it can only amount to surgery on a limb of a body with many afflictions.

Whoever it is that sent a bomber to kill Pak civilians (in these early hours the separate claims of Jundullah and Jamaatul Ahrar cannot be independently verified) the fact of the matter is that Pakistain has far too many groups with options when it comes to killing Paks. Until those groups are eliminated and until the steady, seemingly endless supply of jacket wallahs, fidayeen fighters and sundry other forces of Evil is shut down, Paks will not be safe. Unfortunately, there is little to suggest that the state knows how to rid Pakistain of the religious extremism, militancy and terrorism that has blighted this country for decades now. Finally, insecure, often defenceless, as Paks are inside their own country, the site of yesterday's attack is also a reminder that Pakistain's borders -- east, west and southwest -- are major flashpoints. Peace externally and security internally is the only recipe for a stable Pakistain.

Still above the law?
[DAWN] WHY does the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) wish to garnish its credentials as a party that isn't bound by the law and its procedures? Whether it's Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
's resolve to oust Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
in a manner not contemplated by the letter or spirit of our Constitution or his call for civil disobedience (encouraging people to refuse paying taxes and utility bills), PTI seems unable to distinguish between the state and the government, demands of the law and those mandated to enforce it. Is PTI letting its suspicion of the PML-N government manifest itself as disdain for the law?

Whether it is PTI's vigilantes blockading NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
containers in KP (an action declared illegal by the courts), PTI convening an illegal assembly at D-chowk in disregard of permission granted to protest in Aabpara, PTI demanding that the Supreme Court disregard Article 225 and declare election 2013 illegal and void, or PTI's refusal to abide by laid-down procedure to resign from parliament, the party continues to portray a sense of entitlement to be treated preferentially in disregard of the law.

Last week saw needless politicking on the issue of resignations. The speaker might be a PML-N loyalist and there might be doubts regarding the veracity of his own election to parliament. But his position on verification of resignations is backed by the law. Article 64 of the Constitution entitles any member of the National Assembly to resign by writing to the speaker. Article 67 allows the Assembly to frame rules to regulate its business pursuant to which Rules of Procedure and Conduct of National Assembly, 2007, have been promulgated.

Rule 43(2) requires the speaker to accept the resignation, "if (a) a member hands over the letter of resignation to the speaker personally and informs him that the resignation is voluntary and genuine and the speaker has no information or knowledge to the contrary; or (b) the speaker receives the letter of resignation by any other means and he, after such inquiry as he thinks fit, either himself or through the National Assembly Secretariat or through any other agency, is satisfied that the resignation is voluntary and genuine... ."

More Action, Less Debate
[NATION.PK] What began in North Wazoo Agency (NWA) has spread to other areas of FATA, as Operation Khyber-1 in Khyber Agency is now proceeding along with Operation Zarb-e-Azb
..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)...
. All this new activity, the widening scope of military action, is taking place without any debate or discussion on either mainstream media or in the Parliament. It would appear that the military is calling the shots and the federal government is more than happy to play its limited role of endorsing activities only after they've taken place. The sort of debate, which was witnessed before launching Operation Zarb-e-Azb, is not taking place. Such a callous and dismissive attitude on the part of the Parliament and the media towards actions, which are bound to have long-lasting effects on the country, is extremely regrettable.

The ongoing operation in Khyber Agency also endorses the view that the issue of militancy is not restricted to one tribal agency alone, contrary to what has been previously propagated. Some of these areas, such as Tirrah Valley, had allegedly been cleared by the military in the past. Yet, today, the military has had to resort to aerial bombardment to clear the way for a ground offensive. This points towards the state's failure in sustaining ground won against Death Eaters in the past. As long as there is no follow-up policy, which replaces the ineffective and obsolete governance model in FATA and establishes the state's consistent and firm presence through both judicial and administrative institutions, the problem will very much persist. Militancy flourishes in pockets abandoned by the state, and when the government of the day is mute on what it plans to do about FATA, prospects of lasting peace appear bleak. It is critical that the ongoing operations are brought back in the spotlight to ensure transparency and accountability, where necessary. The fact that certain elements of the state are still quite tolerant towards bad boy myrmidons, who suit their strategic designs, such as sectarian elements wreaking havoc in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
and elsewhere, is another discouraging indicator. It is hoped that these issues, which are a matter of life and death for innocent citizens, will be addressed with the attention and detail they deserve.
