-Lurid Crime Tales-
Nice work if you can get it
Somebody always beats me to these great ideas...
Columbus - A chiropractor who was accused of medical malpractice this spring for charging patients $60 an hour to heal their pain telepathically surrendered his license Thursday.
Muldoon, slap the braclets on him!
Dr. James C. Burda of Athens had claimed he possessed the power to heal clients via techniques he dubbed "Bahlaqeem Vina" and "Bahlaqeem Jaqem," made-up terms that he said described his ability to go back in time to the date of an injury and realign bones and joints using telekinetic vibration.
Wow. It's like "Time Tunnel"! What if Spartacus needed a chiropractor? The doc'd be there! History could've been changed!
After stumbling across his Web site, bahlaqeem.com, the Ohio State Chiropractic Board accused him of being a long-distance quack, charging that a psychological exam determined he was mentally ill and suffered from "delusional disorder, grandiose type."
Hmmmmmmm. Should've become a lawyer instead...
In an interview in April, Burda, 58, said he discovered his "God-given gift" when his foot began to hurt while he was driving from Athens to Parkersburg, W.Va. He said he commanded it to stop and the pain went away.
Wow. I'm impressed.
He was back in his car Thursday when a reporter called to ask about the surrender of his license and his written admission that Bahlaqeem "is not an acceptable form of treatment according to acceptable and prevailing standards of chiropractic care."
Wow. The scene of the original miracle. Funny how things work out...
"I really can't speak to you right now; I'm in my vehicle," he said. "Maybe we can visit a little more when I'm not in my vehicle." He then hung up.
Vehicle don't fail me now...
Burda was subjected to national ridicule after regulators filed disciplinary charges against him. He earned a "News of the Weird" entry and caused humorist Dave Barry to lament: "If only they could do this for prostate exams."
A famous quack. I wonder if he pulls that, "Do you know who I am " shit?
Burda's Web site promises "pain relief any time, anywhere . . . in the privacy of your home or other personal space" for $60 (checks and money orders accepted).
Even over the phone. In fact, I prefer it that way...
It includes a "testimonial" from a 10-year-old basset hound and says Burda chose the word Bahlaqeem to describe his technique because it has "a soothing vibrational influence and contains the very special number of nine letters."
He knows a talking basset hound? This guy's amazing!
A section titled "Wonderments of the Body" includes this wonderment in answer to the question, "Why do the fingers bend down at an angle when I close my hand slowly?":
Now that's deep!
"The hand works like this in order to give you the most power between each finger and your thumb. The powerful, opposable thumb. It is human."
Wow. I wonder if he knew Darwin in a previous life? Or if he was Darwin?
Burda had been practicing in Ohio since 1991.
And it only took them 15 years to catch him...

#2  Going all the way back to H.L. Mencken, chiropractors have been known as charlatans. The insurance companies gave out a massive groan when the feds allowed them to take Medicare dollars, which is just a money tree to them, and their rates nationwide quintupled overnight.

On the plus side, they do represent Darwin in action, the culling of the stupid as surely as the religious who try and pray away communicable disease.

#3  Lots of folks I know swear by them. I went to one once. He had his trainee come in and check me out. The trainee was searching like the dickens to figure out what the problem was, but said he was stumped. "We don't see many perfect backs," the senior said. My problem was muscle strain and he recommended taking it easy for a week. Wouldn't accept payment. Said it was worth it for his trainee to see a good back. They're not all charlatans.

Breaking: Principal shot at Wisconsin school
CAZENOVIA, Wis. - The principal was shot several times at a rural Wisconsin school Friday morning, sheriff's deputies confirmed. All the children at Weston School were reported safe, Sauk County sheriff's Capt. Michael Haifemann also said. The principal was apparently shot several times, Haifemann said. The principal's condition was not immediately known.

Local TV station WKOW-TV said the suspect was a former student armed with multiple weapons.

School district officials told NBC News affiliate WMTV the Weston School principal was flown to a hospital for treatment. WMTV also reported that the high school wing of the campus was in lock down. Busses were evacuating students.

The campus also encompasses a middle school.

Victim's Name Tattooed On Child Killer's Forehead
I guess you use what you have handy. Me? I would've used a soldering iron or nailgun
Man Abducted, Molested, Killed 10-Year-Old
The man who pleaded guilty to molesting and killing a 10-year-old southern Indiana girl now has her name tattooed on his forehead.
see the pic at the link
Anthony Stockelman, serving a life sentence at the Wabash Correctional Facility for killing Katie Collman, was found with the words "Katie's Revenge" on his forehead. Corrections officials at the facility are investigating the matter, and have contacted state police to assist in the investigation. Officials said Stockelman is now being held in protective custody. Officials said they aren't sure if the tattoo was done by another inmate. Katie's father John Neace heard about it from friends, and figures other prisoners are responsible.
"rehabilitation" and "societal payback" can take many forms
Katie, of Crothersville, Ind., was found dead in a creek near Seymour, Ind., in 2005 after being abducted. Stockelman is serving a life sentence for his role in the killing.
his role? How about KILLER? CHILD-MOLESTING PIECE OF SH&T?
The search for Katie, a bright child who enjoyed basketball and the Disney Channel, had consumed Crothersville. Police initially believed she was abducted and slain so she would not reveal methamphetamine activity in her neighborhood.

Anthony Stockelman pleaded guilty in order to avoid the death penalty in connection with child's slaying.
he'll get it in jail. Justice
Another man was the first person arrested in the case, but his charges were dropped in April when the investigation pointed toward Stockelman. And as evidence seemed to mount against Stockelman, it became a potential death-penalty case, which one side argued is why the defendant made the guilty plea. "I think he knows all the evidence was against him, and he didn't want to get the death penalty. In my opinion, he's a coward," said Neace after the man's plea. "I'm happy. (Stockelman) won't be coming out. When he does, it will be on a gurney," Neace said.
"maybe in one piece, but we have hopes otherwise..."
Prosecutor Stephen Pierson argued that Stockelman molested Collman at her mother's home, then bound her and took her to Cypress Lake, where he killed her. She was found face-down in a creek five days after her disappearance. Stockelman's DNA matched evidence found on the child's body.

"It's really unfortunate to be married to someone for eight years and have no idea who he was," his wife, Tabitha Stockelman said. "He was a sick kid-toucher."

But Troy Stockelman said his brother, a father himself, was remorseful, adding that the life sentence will only hurt Stockelman's children.
Remorseful, huh? His kids deserve to have a life away from this sick bastard. I'd change their names
"I don't see the sense in keeping his kids from seeing their father," Troy Stockelman said.
How about that the little girl has been kept permanently from her parents?
Defense attorney James Kilburn also weighed in on Vance's sentencing. "I'm very disappointed in the decision," he said.

Stockelman allegedly offered to give Neace half the money from a possible book deal. "That was smack in the face," Neace said. "A book deal ... money ... that's not going to bring Katie back."

While in court, Stockelman apologized to the Collman family.

Be careful here, it seems that this brand of idiocy must run in the family.

Defense attorney James Kilburn also weighed in on Vance's sentencing. "I'm very disappointed in the decision," he said.

Must be part of the family.

Well, what do you expect from a guy who deals crank to kids? They only care about the money and the 'transactional sex', and damn the consequences. These guys should be killed before they are ever released if they run out of jail beds. A psychopathic predator at every level.

#3  #1: “Woods and Siders were fired for releasing confidential information, conduct unbecoming to staff and acts of incompetence,” Larsen said.

Who cares about convicted child killers/molesters/meth-dealers rights? They forfeit them when they get nailed with DNA evidence like that. The legal system in this country is what is incompetant, not the guards. If the photo is the truth and not staged, then so be it.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
"Nature is apparently polluting itself"
John Podhoretz, "The Corner" at National Review

You know what the problem with the environment is? There are just too darn many critters. The Wash Post explains:

Scientists have run high-tech tests on harmful bacteria in local rivers and streams and found that many of the germs — and in the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, a majority of them— come from wildlife dung. The strange proposition that nature is apparently polluting itself has created a serious conundrum for government officials charged with cleaning up the rivers.

Part of the problem lies with the unnaturally high populations of deer, geese and raccoons living in modern suburbs and depositing their waste there. But officials say it would be nearly impossible, and wildly unpopular, to kill or relocate enough animals to make a dent in even that segment of the pollution.

That leaves scientists and environmentalists struggling with a more fundamental question: How clean should we expect nature to be? In certain cases, they say, the water standards themselves might be flawed, if they appear to forbid something as natural as wild animals leaving their dung in the woods.

Emphasis added. I shall never forget these words: "Nature is apparently polluting itself." Shame on you, nature.

#7  Around here the extensive county parks systems keep professional hunters on retainer to thin the deer herds to the carrying capacity of the land. They have to keep this fact quiet, though, of the Bambi squads will start fussing. Apparently too, a neighborhood can hire one of these pros to do something about a local excess of critters, in areas where human density is below a certain limit, and where the laws forbid amateurs from shooting off guns.

#8  TW, you just reminded me of one of my childhood experiences. There was distemper in the dog population when I was 14. I was walking home one day, when I came upon a police car and a small crowd of onlookers, most of them kids. The cop was pulling on a rope that had a beagle under a car on the other end. The beagle would not more, and started to growl fiercely. The cop, a gun wielding professional, pulled his weapon. He pulled the beagle from under the car, and the dog lunged at him. He fired 3 fast rounds into the beagle. The kids were within 6 feet of them at the time. I just walked away shaking my head.

Europe
VW, union agree to increase work week
This is an eye opener.
Representatives from Volkswagen AG and Germany's biggest industrial union said Friday they had agreed to increase working hours at plants in western Germany by more than four hours a week to 33 hours without any increase in pay.
29 hour work weeks!!! When younger, many of us regularly put in work days longer than that.
The agreement between VW and the IG Metall union fell short of the 35-hour week sought by the carmaker as part of efforts to drastically cut production costs for its vehicles such as its flagship Golf, which are selling strongly but bringing in little profit.

Volkswagen had sought to extend the work week from the current 28.8 hours. Under the current deal, workers must increase their workweek only to 33 hours for no additional pay, and the company must start paying overtime for hours beyond that.
Cripes! Even under the "tough" new work rules, I've worked an entire German week and more in one sitting. Where the heck was my overtime and the rest of the 5 1/2 days off?
IG Metall was further backed by a wage agreement with Volkswagen struck in 2004 that saw the company promise no forced layoffs or cutbacks through 2011.
I assume no cutbacks in the 6 week vacations.

Two Colombians Guilty of U.S. Drug Charges
The FARC angle makes this worth noticing.
MIAMI (AP) - Two members of Colombia's largest rebel group pleaded guilty Thursday to federal drug conspiracy charges, the first from the organization known as FARC to be convicted of narcotics trafficking in the United States, prosecutors said.

Cesar Augusto Perez-Parra, 43, and "Roberto" Farouk Shaikh-Reyes, 41, pleaded guilty to charges that they plotted to smuggle more than 4,400 pounds of cocaine about once a month from Colombia to Miami. They were arrested last year before they could import any of the drugs, said U.S. Attorney R. Alexander Acosta. Both were associates of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and European Union. Dozens of other FARC members have been indicted on drug trafficking charges, but Perez-Parra and Shaikh-Reyes are the first to be convicted in the U.S., Acosta said.

The suspected supervisor of the two men who pleaded guilty, Ferney Tovar-Parra, is in custody in Colombia and is awaiting extradition to face similar charges in Miami. He is accused of overseeing FARC coca fields and laboratories and of collecting "taxes and fees" for much of the group's cocaine industry.

Perez-Parra and Shaikh-Reyes could face several decades in prison when sentenced in January by U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore.
