Actually, I get exactly what you're referring to. A great many people feel that Poland, Ukraine and/or the Baltics aren't worth a single American dollar or - more crucially - one American life. Let me try to explain my view.
The Poles, Balts, and (to a certain extent) the Ukranians aren't what they used to be. Between World Wars 1 and 2, the Poles and Balts were far, far from enlightened Jeffersonian democracies - in fact, you can make the argument that the Poles were a military dictatorship, and the Balts were fairly authoritarian. The Ukraine - prior to WWII - was just beginning to recover from the Holodomor, a genocidal famine inflicted on them by Stalin, and then once Hitler invaded, it got worse. Sadly, a appreciable number of Ukranians took sides with the Germans, believing that they would help liberate them from the USSR...and wrong as that was, reflect for a minute on how bad it had to be to see the Wehrmacht as liberators.
All three groups learned the hard way that the Russians haven't changed since about the 10th century - they just changed the flags. The Ukranians have some pretty disturbing corruption issues, it is true, and the other groups do as well, though to the best of my knowledge not as bad, though bad enough.
And that's where some of the conflicts come into play. For better or for worse, Poland and the Balts are members of NATO, and for better or worse, we are committed to their defense if they are attacked by another state. Failure on our part to come to that defense ends NATO - full stop. And as screwed up as NATO is, it's difficult to deny that it almost certainly prevented a Third World War between '45 and '91.
And we are kind of trapped in this mess because of a failure of imagination on the part of every single pre-91 NATO country - the Soviets are gone, the millennium has arrived, and we can spend the money on something else, selah. All of us at the national leadership level refused to even consider the possibility that they'd be back.
Well, they are. And they're seriously, seriously pissed off because they couldn't take a country with maybe 10% of their land mass. Ukraine may not be honest - they may not be staunch, upright defenders of justice and Democracy - but they did not deserve what has been inflicted on them over the last eight months. And dishonest and corrupt or not, the Ukranians didn't force the Russians to invade. NATO membership would almost certainly have never happened for them otherwise - the risk was too high to have NATO units on an actual Russian border...but the Russians' offended senses have brought two NEW nations into NATO, and will give a powerful push to the Ukraine joining once this is over.
I have very, very deep concerns about potential independent actions by the Poles and the Lithuanians - both nations have very long and unpleasant memories of Russian rule, and both have the ability to put a hurt on Belarus (which in fairness has talked a good fight but stayed mostly out of the way) or the Russian enclave at Kaliningrad. Any action like that - no, I can NOT support going in to bail them out, and if those things should, God help us, come to pass, please feel free to remind me of my words. But as time goes by, and the Russians fall back a little bit more every day, the risk of the Russians panicking gets a little bit higher. We also have to conundrum that the Ukranians are entitled to every last bit of their country back (including the Crimea) but if that were to happen, the best case scenario would be a Russia itching for revenge a ways down the road. And if the Russians were to keep even a token amount of land, they get to claim a victory...and try it again a ways down the road.
I don't think there are any good options here, and I think it may well get far, far worse before it gets better. If the Russian lines were to crack badly enough, I can see them pulling out the WMDs, or worse, throwing weapons at the supply centers in Poland. They're not going to give in, and if they do an entirely Russian thing and try to burn it to the ground...we are faced with putting out the fire or letting burn.
I respect and understand your opinions, I hope I've explained mine enough that you can see my point of view even if we don't agree. If there's something that isn't clear, sing out and I'll be happy to go over it.

As I recall, Poland has been scrimping on domestic spending to stock up on American weapons to fulfill the promises made when they joined NATO, and staffing for their military ditto. The one thing the Poles are not is free-loaders.

Putin invaded Ukraine because he felt threatened by NATO and he has damn good reason to feel that way. Russia, as we have seen, is much too weak to pose a threat to Western Europe and isn't likely to get any stronger any time soon...maybe never. But Germany and Poland could conceivable pose a threat to Russia, especially with the likes of Joe Biden helping to fan the flames with his dream of expanding NATO all the way to Kamchatka. If you were Putin, you'd be paranoid too.
No. We don't need to defend Poland against Russia. We need to make sure their inferiority complex doesn't lead them into an attack on Russia. Same with Germany. A realistic justification for NATO these days, if there is one, is not to keep Russia out of Western Europe. It's to keep the Germans and the Poles out of Russia.

That includes up to 903,000 standard 155mm howitzer rounds as well as 3,000 M982 Excalibur guided rounds, 7,000 Remote Anti-Armor Mine System (RAAMS) projectiles, and 180,000 105mm howitzer shells. All told, that’s more than 1.09 million rounds which weigh well in excess of 50,000 tons combined — close to twice as much as the Statue of Liberty.
The rounds are part of more than $18.2 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the Biden Administration, including approximately $17.6 billion since the beginning of Russia’s full-on invasion on Feb. 24.

[Jpost] Iranian instructors coordinated Shahed-136 drone strikes on infrastructure facilities in Kyiv, as well as on northern and western regions of Ukraine.
Instructors from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) are training Russian forces in Belarus and coordinating the launches of Iranian-made drones, according to the Ukrainian National Resistance Center.
A group of Iranian instructors, officers of the IRGC, who are reportedly under the protection of the Russian National Guard and FSB officers, have been spotted in the village of Mykulichi, in the Gomel region.
According to information obtained by the Ukrainian National Resistance Center from Belarusian partisans, these instructors coordinated Shahed-136 drone strikes on infrastructure facilities in Kyiv, as well as on northern and western regions of Ukraine.
According to the local resistance group, the Russians have taken complete control of airfields in Baranovichi and Lida. The Russian military continues to use the bases to launch strikes on the territory of Ukraine.

A spokesman for the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated on Friday that Ukraine had succeeded in downing 85% of the Iranian kamikaze drones fired by Russia, according to Ukrinform.
Suicide drones, also known as kamikaze drones and loitering munitions, are an effective tool in the ever-advancing field of drone warfare, and it seems Russia is well aware of their potential in war.
The particular drones Russia is allegedly using are the Shahed-136 drones, made by Iran and sold to Russia for use in Ukraine.
IRAN ASKS ITS CITIZENS TO LEAVE UKRAINE IMMEDIATELY
Additionally on Friday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry advised all Iranian citizens in Ukraine to leave immediately.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry claimed on Thursday that Iran is using Ukraine as a testing ground for its drones to prepare for future drone attacks on Israel.
"Today hundreds of Iranian drones are undergoing 'test runs' on our land, killing civilians," The Defense Ministry wrote on Twitter. "These drones were not intended for use against Ukraine. To have a strategic advantage over its enemy, Israel should conduct a 'test run' of its air defenses Ukraine is the best testing ground."

Anyone notice that if you read to the end of the article, they debunk their own headline? To wit:
1) Nobody has found this brand of camera (Nikon) in Ukraine. The drone camera in the video looks to be a regular Canon DSLR.
2) The speed cameras have a fixed-focus lens set at 50 feet, not real useful on a drone.
Interestingly, the article never offers a source for the accusation. It just says the Rus are blamed. By who? By the article apparently.

In his weekly press briefing, foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani denied that Iranian military forces had been sent to Russian-annexed Crimea, adding that Tehran is ready to help end the "unnecessary" war in Ukraine.
Last week, the White House National Security Council front man John Kirby told news hounds that Iran has sent a "relatively small number" of personnel to Crimea to assist Russian troops in launching Iranian-made drones against Ukraine.
"This fake news is done with political goals to divert public opinion," Kanaani said, as cited by Iranian state media, about the claims by the US.

The condemnation by Ukraine and its western allies for the reported use of Iranian suicide drones in Ukraine is the latest wave of international pressure on Iran amid a violent mostly peaceful crackdown on protests at home, and a lack of progress in nuclear negotiations.

[Rudaw] Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites.... announced Sunday a contract with Russia to supply it with 40 turbines to help its gas industry amid Western sanctions over Moscow's war in Ukraine, local media reported.
Iran's "industrial successes are not limited to the fields of missiles and drones," Iranian Gas Engineering and Development Company's CEO, Reza Noushadi, was quoted as saying by Shana, the oil ministry's news agency.
"Currently, 85 percent of the facilities and equipment needed by the gas industry are built inside the country, and based on this capability, a contract has recently been signed to export 40 Iranian-made turbines to Russia," he added.
Noushadi did not specify when the contract was signed, and when the turbines are due to be delivered.
Following the imposition of economic sanctions over the Kremlin's offensive in Ukraine, Russia reduced or halted supplies to different European nations, causing energy prices to soar.
The Kremlin insists sanctions have prevented the proper maintenance of Russian gas infrastructure and, in particular, blocked the return of a Siemens turbine that had been undergoing repairs in Canada.
"Give us a turbine, we will turn Nord Stream on tomorrow", Putin said at the Vladivostok forum in September, referring to a vital gas pipeline between Russia and Germany.
Western countries have accused Russia of using gas supplies as a "weapon".
Noushadi said the US sanctions on Russia are aimed at excluding Moscow from the gas market.
"In recent years, the United States of America has widely set up LNG production plants, and recently, with the all-out embargo on Russia and then the earth-shattering kaboom in the Nord Stream gas pipeline, it effectively eliminated one of its biggest competitors in gas exports," he noted.
Russia and Iran hold some of the world's largest gas reserves, and are both under strict US sanctions.
Both countries have in recent months stressed the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation.

Tehran has recently denied supplying Russia with weapons for use in the war, after Kyiv and its Western partners accused Moscow of using Iranian-made drones in Ukraine.
