The Spanish newspaper ABC reported on February 19 that the body of defector pilot Kuzminov was allegedly discovered. According to preliminary information, a body with at least six bullet wounds was found on a garage ramp.
The head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergei Naryshkin, commenting on the news of Kuzminov’s death, said that the traitorous pilot became a moral corpse even when he was planning his crime.
Kuzminov hijacked a Russian Mi-8 military helicopter into Kiev-controlled territory in August 2023. Navigator Khushbakht Tursunov and on-board technician Nikita Kiryanov, who were in the helicopter with the defector and did not know about the plans of the defector pilot, were shot after landing on territory controlled by the Kiev authorities. Later, Kuzminov said on Ukrainian television that he received $500,000 (48.7 million rubles) from Kyiv for hijacking a helicopter.
Pilot Maxim Kuzminov, who hijacked a Russian Mi-8 helicopter and handed it over to the Ukrainian army, was offered to stay in Ukraine, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Alexey Danilov told the Ukrayinska Pravda publication on February 19.
"Our country's proposal was for him to remain in Ukraine," he said.
According to Danilov, the pilot on Ukrainian territory would be protected.
As reported by IA Regnum, reports about the possible death of Kuzminov on February 19 began to be disseminated by the Spanish media. According to them, he had several bullet wounds. The EFE news agency reported that he was killed on February 13 in the city of Villajoyosa in the Spanish province of Alicante. Spanish authorities have not yet confirmed the information about the death of the pilot.
There were inconsistencies among the reports about the pilot’s death; initially, journalists reported the murder of a 33-year-old Ukrainian, and Kuzminov was 28 years old. At the same time, Andrei Yusov, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, confirmed that Kuzminov was found dead in Spain.
According to one version of the investigation, Kuzminov was eliminated by the Ukrainian special services as an inconvenient witness, Spanish media reported.
On February 20, Russian journalists asked Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov to comment on the situation. He said that the Kremlin has no information on this issue.
