Detroit's emergency mgr. has tax liens on Maryland home
The man charged with fixing Detroit's faltering finances has been hit with four liens in four years from the state of Maryland for unpaid taxes, records show.
Criminy, can't our leaders do proper background checks anymore?
No.
State records show Kevyn D. Orr, who was appointed emergency manager on Thursday, has two outstanding liens on his $1 million home in Chevy Chase, Md., for $16,000 in unemployment taxes in 2010 and 2011. Two other liens of more than $16,000 in unemployment and income taxes were satisfied in 2010 and 2011, records show. Orr said he didn't know anything about the liens when shown records of them Friday morning by The Detroit News.

Late afternoon, a spokeswoman for Snyder -- who appointed Orr to the $275,000 per year post Thursday -- said Orr spent the day researching the issue and would pay "in full ASAP." The Washington, D.C., bankruptcy attorney blamed the problems on Turbo Tax an outside accountant hired to file his tax returns, said Sara Wurfel, a Snyder spokeswoman.

Maryland is aggressive about placing liens on property during tax disputes, said Glen Frost, a Columbia, Md., tax attorney.
Perhaps Mr. Orr will learn two things from this: 1) pay his own taxes on time and 2) use property liens as he cleans up Detroit...

#1  I doubt tax liens will matter much when 50% of Detroit's population is skipping property tax payments. (but then again, it's not like the city is providing services...) I recommend nuclear-powered bulldozers rather than tax liens for cleaning up the city.

#2  What good are liens against deserted propeties?

#3  All real estate [property] is essentially leased and belongs to the government. Quit paying the property taxes and see how long it takes the government to find a new lessee.

#4  Quit paying the property taxes and see how long it takes the government to find a new lessee.
In Detroit's case, how long is "indefinitely", which indicates the actual value of the real estate in question ranges from zero to negative.

#5  Criminy, can't our leaders do proper background checks anymore?

We have public and extensive vetting hearings on Presidential nominees that appear to only require the person has a pulse regardless of the dark and troubling background/record of the individual concerned. Just ask Harry Reid if it makes any difference [other than being a Trunk].

It's an improvement from what they've had.

#7  Quit paying the property taxes and see how long it takes the government to find a new lessee

Uh, huh. Philadelphia (pop. approx 1.5 million) has approximately 90,000 people who have not paid property taxes. Detroit's deliquency rate is,as SteveS said, indeed 50%. There are similar stories across most of the blue states, though not as extreme as Detroit.

Urban area? Blue state? It ain't gonna happen.

#8  Urban area? Blue state? It ain't gonna happen.

Exactly! Such a move would be discriminatory and racist. Farms and homes in fly-over, not so much.

Cheney Eyed Iraq Oil, Says Bush Speech Writer
David Frum, speech writer for former President George W. Bush, reflected on the beginnings of the Iraq war in an article for Newsweek published Monday.

In the article, Frum says then-Vice President Dick Cheney had his eye on Iraqi oil, although Frum does not claim this contributed to the decision to go to war.

Frum recounts his impressions of Ahmed Chalabi, a wealthy Iraqi Shiite who formed the Iraqi National Congress, an exile group opposed to Saddam Hussein.

“I was less impressed by Chalabi than were some others in the Bush administration. However, since one of those ‘others’ was Vice President Cheney, it didn’t matter what I thought,” wrote Frum.

Frum said that when Chalabi joined the summer retreat of the American Enterprise Institute in Colorado in 2002, “He and Cheney spent long hours together, contemplating the possibilities of a Western-oriented Iraq: an additional source of oil, an alternative to U.S. dependency on an unstable-looking Saudi Arabia.”

Neither oil nor Cheney figure prominently in the rest of Frum’s article.

An article published in Wired magazine on Monday by a former CIA analyst expressed anger at Cheney for deceiving the public.

Nada Bakos, in the article “I Tried to Make the Intelligence Behind the Iraq War Less Bogus,” said her intelligence team was lead “down a rabbit hole.” Only one conclusion was acceptable, whether it was entirely true or not: Hussein had ties to al-Qaeda.

Bakos wrote: “On Sunday, March 16, 2003, I watched Cheney on ‘Meet The Press’ contradict our assessment publicly. ‘We know that he [Saddam] has a long-standing relationship with various terrorist groups,’ Cheney said, ‘including the al-Qaeda organization.’ Cheney was asserting to the public as fact something that we found to be anything but.”

Colorado sheriffs: New gun laws unenforceable
Posted by: DarthVader || 03/18/2013 17:19 || Comments || Link || [0 views] Top|| File under:

#1  Cooke said he, like other county sheriffs, “won’t bother enforcing” the laws because it will be impossible for them to keep track of how the requirements are being met by gun owners. He said he and other sheriffs are considering a lawsuit against the state to block the measures if they are signed into law.

This seems to be a national trend. Local law enforcement flat out refusing to enforce laws from the Federal and State level.

Hillary Clinton announces support for same-sex marriage
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced for the first time Monday she supports marriage rights for same-sex couples, saying that "gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights."

"America is at its best when we champion the freedom and dignity of every human being," Clinton said in a video produced by the Human Rights Campaign.

The former first lady, U.S. senator, and 2008 presidential candidate had previously backed civil unions and partner benefits for same-sex couples, but had stopped short of a full endorsement for marriage. That was the position of most Democratic primary candidates that year, including President Barack Obama.

During her tenure as secretary of state, Clinton avoided taking political positions, as is customary for the role.

Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, wrote in an opinion article last week that he supported the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, the law he signed in 1996 that defines marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman. It also denies federal benefits to same-sex couples in the nine states where same-sex couples can now legally wed.

Should voters have to prove citizenship to register?
Yes. Next question...

#1  No!

All that should be required is a Social Security check. Your addy and all pertinent residential info is already in the Social Security system. If you have paid or contributed 40 quarters, or are the spouse of someone who has - you are good to go.

Proof enough for me. :-)

#2  And a pulse.

Former Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce, a leading Republican proponent of Proposition 200, strongly disputed claims that Arizona doesn't have voter fraud problems. "They turn a blind eye," Pearce said of the state's election officials.
Example:
But Karen Osborne, elections director for Maricopa County, where nearly 60 percent of Arizona's voters live, said voter fraud is rare, and even rarer among illegal immigrants.
"That just does not seem to be an issue," Osborne said of the claim that illegal immigrants are voting. "They did not want to come out of the shadows. They don't want to be involved with the government."

#3  Failing #1 above, a copy of your US Military ID card or DD Form-214 with 'Character of service' annotated as "honorable" and a valid driver's license will suffice.

#4  "They did not want to come out of the shadows. They don't want to be involved with the government."

...except to register the kids at school [and free lunch program], show up at the emergency room [usually a university or state operation since most private facilities have closed or become 'urgent care' centers to avoid bankruptcy driven by the federal 'must provide service mandate'], to get food stamps, etc, etc, etc.

Should voters have to prove citizenship to register

How about setting up a TSA booth to go through before entering the election facility?

#6  Yes, there should be some proof that you are who you say you are. Yes, there are legal requirements like citizenship, non-felon status, etc.

Also, they should purge the voter registration records after each presidential election and make you re-register.

If you vote means anything at all, then it is worth putting minimal procedures in place to protect it. I have to renew my bloody driver's license every ten years. Why not my voter registration every 4?

#14  I agree with Iblis 100%. Purge the rolls and force everyone to reregister and ensure there is a deadline at least a year in advance. If you can't be bothered by then you don't deserve to vote.

I love absentee voting but I'd dump that as well. Allow anyone to fill out a ballot ahead of time but it has to be deposited in a booth on the day (with ID requirements and everything).

To much fraud slips by because of this convenience.

#15  And felony with serious time for anyone caught of fraud. It's not a game and we shouldn't treat it as such.

#16  YES, Dammit, we have no time for Phonies.

If you're caught Your voting privileges are revoked.

That means NO VOTING, EVER.

#17  I'm with rjschwarz and Iblis

I've often said make it so that you *must* re-register *in person* with positive ID every 4 years. No motor voter, no GOTY, if they are lazy to get off their fat ass every 4 years then they are obviously too lazy to research the issues and will do far more harm than good. The only exception would be for someone physically unable to appear at the country clerk's office personally - and in that case an election official (no volunteers) will go to them.

And the price for unearned federal assistance (i.e. Welfare) is your right to vote. If you have been on welfare for the previous year - you can't simply vote. No - you can't vote yourself more money.

And a lifetime ban on any voting if you are caught comittiting fraud. Lifetime ban on any public office if an elected official is involved in voter fraud.

#20  By most accounts there are 11-22.0Milyuhn illegals in the US, the majority or bulk of which are likely to vote DemoLeft + apply for Fed-State public benefits widout even being demanded or having to change their illlegal status to legal.

AS PER OWG-NWO + NAU 2015, + TRANS-ATLANTIC UNION + TRANS-PACIFIC UNION, ETC. THE NUMBERS WILL ONLY GET WORSE GIVEN ...

> DESIRE FOR THE US UNDER OWG + NAU, ETC. TO BE A [unofficial] "BORDERLESS" COUNTRY WHERE MILYUHNS OR SCORES OF MILYUHNS OF FOREIGN WORKERS WILL BE INVITED IN TO LIVE + WORK, TO INCLUD REMITTING $$$ BACK TO THEIR COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN.

> NO SERIOUS EFFORT ON THE PART OF THE GOP-DEMS TO TRULY SECURE OUR BORDERS, OR CLOSE LOOPHOLES IN IMMIGRATION + CRIMINAL TRAFFICKING.

The figure of 11-22 milyuhn illegals TODAY will be seen as "the good ole'days" when the numbers of illegals were L-O-W compared to post-2015 OWG NAU, etc suborned Amerika.

US FEDERAL = STATE SOCIALISM = NEW "SOVEREIGNTY",
+ prolly safe to say also the NEW "NATIONAL" = LIMITED GLOBAL/GLOBALIST "ECONOMY"???

SPACE "ECONOMY"???

ANTI-NATIONALIST, ANTI-CONSTITUTIONAL, ANTI-ELECTORAL/VOTER, ANTI-PERSONALTY, ANTI-CIVIL LIBERTIES/FREEDOM ... ... ...@.

Voter Registration or Gun Control, etc. IMO it all ultimately comes down to the above.

You know - the "WILL OF THE PEOPLE"!
