Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Pentagon Denies U.S. - Russia Combat Strike Coordination
[Daily Beast] The Pentagon on Monday denied a claim from the Russian Defense Ministry that the country’s planes flew a combat mission in Syria alongside U.S.-led coalition forces. The spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve, the counter-ISIS coalition, said in a statement that the U.S. is not "coordinating airstrikes" with Russia in war-torn Syria. "DoD maintains a channel of communication with the Russian military focused solely on ensuring the safety of aircrews and de-confliction of Coalition and Russian operations in Syria," the statement continued. A U.S. defense official echoed that sentiment to The Daily Beast reporter Kim Dozier.

Kroger announces plan to hire 10,000 in 2017
[UPI] -- Supermarket chain Kroger Co. announced Monday it is hiring to fill about 10,000 permanent positions in 2017.

The Cincinnati-based company said in a statement its workforce grew by over 12,000 in 2016. The available positions are all in its supermarket divisions in nearly 3,000 retail food stores, under a variety of names, in 35 states and the District of Columbia. Over 443,000 people are currently employed at Kroger and its subsidiaries, which include pharmacies, convenience stores, jewelry stores and gas stations.

The company said 88,000 permanent positions were created in the past eight years, and Tim Massa, Kroger's vice president of human resources, said, "Kroger's growth trajectory continues to create opportunities for our people to advance their careers."
Apologies in advance with regard to the 'Go Krogering' jingle mind worm.

Iraq
Just When You Thought ISIS Couldn't Do Anything Worse
[Clarion Project] In the Al Hawija district of Iraq's Kirkuk province, which ISIS has controlled since June 2014, ISIS has devised the most horrific forms of execution.

ISIS cut out a man’s heart and ate it while he was still alive, as well as executing seven people it accused of spying for the regime with a bulldozer.

Sources in the Kirkuk province who requested anonymity spoke to Al Sumariya News on Sunday relating the latest horrors perpetrated by Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL).

"Islamic State [ISIS/ISIL] used a bulldozer to execute seven people that were charged with contacting government forces. The bulldozer ran them over while they were alive. Among the people who were executed were people who belonged to the Iraqi security forces," the source said.

Woman's March: The Imponderable Ashley Judd (Video)
Caution: This video not suitable for family or office.
[Powerline] I was traveling home from Texas yesterday and missed the various women’s marches, but I heard that actress Ashley Judd went totally bonkers at the Washington DC rally. The video of the speech rant is below, and it is indeed off-the-chart crazy.

But you should approach it with an open mind and entertain the possibility that she’s actually a mole from the Trump campaign. I think the circumstantial evidence indeed supports this hypothesis.

Think about it for a moment. The whole thing was a far left hootenanny, but no one is really going to pay attention to unrepentant Communist Angela Davis (yup--she was there), or even Gloria Steinem, who has to be about 145 years old by now. So the Trump campaign infiltrated the program with Judd, and supplied her with a "poem" from a 19 year old in Tennessee who will no doubt go on now to win a MacArthur genius award. And the crowd loves it! Best part is, as you can see at the beginning she even takes in Michael Moore.

My comment was that Ashley needs to up her meds.

Progs and Media Console Themselves Comparing DJT and Obama Crowd Size
The story is now rancid, but comment poster 'Barry' nails the bottom line:

[LI] Trump's support comes from all across the country. Traveling is a considerable expense. Obambi could get the progs located just around DC and fill the place up. they are close by, either don’t work or work for the gov.

#4  It isn't the size of the crowd, but how you use it.
Posted by: DarthVader || 01/23/2017 8:59 Comments || Top||

#5  Crowd size is such a lefty made-up bogus issue. Most of Trump's support came from between the East and West coasts; supporters are not no likely to travel to an inauguration for work or travel costs reasons. The area around Washington is largely "blue" and has been increasingly so for a few decades. It was a rainy day during the ceremony. The crowd size was larger than Obama's 2nd inauguration but not as large as for his first inauguration. Reagan had huge crowds but so what? Many supporters watched on cell phones, computers, TV and cable. The only number that matters is 306 electoral votes. The left needs to go to group therapy and get over the outcome of the election--in other words grow up; put your big boy and girl panties on--whichever you choose to wear--your call.
Posted by: JohnQC || 01/23/2017 10:14 Comments || Top||

#6  JohnQC nailed it. Interesting is the long distance viewership of the thing, for those, like me, who never intended to attend. The Washington Times looked into the numbers.

Akamai Technologies — which provides delivery of video content to major news organizations, corporations, retailers and organizations around the world — has this to report: “Video streaming coverage of the 2017 Presidential Inauguration is the largest single live news event that the company has delivered,” calling the event “a new benchmark for live video traffic” which bested such events as the Rio Olympics and the 2016 Euro soccer tournament.

Their measurements are precise. The coverage reached a peak of 8.7 terabytes per second at 12:04 p.m. ET during the opening of the president’s speech, exceeding the previous record of 7.5 terabytes — Tbps — set during Election Day coverage in November. In terms of an audience, that measurement translates into 4.6 million people watching the streaming coverage — about what ABC and CBS garnered during the same time period.

Ronald Reagan still holds the record for drawing the largest inaugural TV audience in history: 42 million viewers watched his 1981 inauguration, and this was before the advent of cable news channels. And this time around? Nielsen Media Research reports that President Trump’s inauguration drew 31 million viewers across a dozen broadcast and cable networks on Friday. In comparison, President Obama attracted 20.5 million viewers for his 2013 inauguration and a hefty 38 million in 2009. And a few more: George W. Bush garnered 29 million viewers in 2001, 15.5 million in 2005 while Bill Clinton drew 29.7 million in 1993 and 21.7 million in 1997.

POTUS ‘To Announce US Embassy Will Move From Tel Aviv To Jerusalem today'
[Independent] The White House will on Monday announce that the US embassy in Israel is to move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, according to an unconfirmed report by an Israeli news outlet.

Channel 2 cited an anonymous source as saying a member of the Trump administration would announce the highly controversial move on the President’s first full working day in office.

The news channel said it had received no confirmation of the claim and there has been no public statement on the move since Friday's inauguration of the new US President.

#2  A bit more info here. For example, how many know there is a decades-old law that will require Trump to make some kind of decision by the end of May. Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act in 1995 to relocate the embassy to Jerusalem. Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, George W. Bush, and W.J. Clinton have all favored moving the embassy to Jerusalem.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Custom made H&K 10mm Subgun goes missing from FBI agent's car
[Breitbart] The FBI is on the hunt for a Heckler and Koch MP5 10mm and a bullet proof vest that were stolen from an agent’s car in California on January 8 or January 9.

They believe the gun and vest were stolen in "Concord, Orinda or Lafayette."
...or Reno, or Vegas, we simply don't know.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, a fully loaded ammunition magazine was stolen as well.

The MP5 10mm was manufactured by H&K at the FBI’s request. It was a follow-up to H&K’s wildly popular MP5 9mm, and was built after the FBI pushed for a submachine gun in a more powerful round.

#3  It would be interesting to know more details on the story. Were the vest and H & K left in the trunk? Did the car have any identifying markings such as government plates? Were the FBI agent and car targeted because the perp(s) knew this agent? Where was the car when these items were stolen? This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened. Maybe these items should have had GPS trackers in them--something that worked better than the Fast and Furious tracking devices.

Passengers cheer as woman berating DJT supporter is kicked off plane (Video)
[The American Mirror] An elderly woman demanded a Donald Trump supporter seated next to her be moved, but she quickly found out that’s not how the world works.

Scott Koteskey, in a window seat, posted video on Saturday showing a woman in the middle seat complaining about him to airline personnel.

Just had the craziest experience ever on an airplane:

I’m boarding my flight from Baltimore to Seattle and approach my seat. I had an upgraded seat that I paid a little extra for because of the long 6 hour flight. As I approach my row I smile and motion to the husband and wife sitting in the aisle and middle seat that Imy seat was next to the window. I put my backpack in the overhead and the wife with a very stern voice says to me:

"Did you come here to cheer or to protest?"

"I came here to celebrate democracy ma’am"

... I knew this was going to be a long flight at this point. She then proceeded with: (somewhat paraphrased as my memory allows)

Her: "You put a crazed man in charge of the nuclear codes! You should be ashamed!"

Lindsey Graham: ‘I Don't Know What America First Means'
[Breitbart] Sunday on CBS’s "Face the Nation," while discussing President Donald Trump’s inaugural address calling for his policy to be informed by putting "America first," Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R-SC) said, "I don’t know what America first means."

Graham said, "To the president, if America first is a throwback to the 20’sand 30’s isolationism when it was first used as a phrase, the world would deteriorate even quicker, if it is a new way of Ronald Reagan’s peace through strength I would like to work with him. I don’t know what America first means."

#9  One sunny day in January, 2017, an old man approaches the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue where he’d been sitting on a park bench. He speaks to the U.S. Marine standing guard and says,

“I would like to go in and meet with President Obama.”

The Marine looks at the man and says,

“Sir, Mr. Obama is no longer president and no longer resides here.”

The old man says,

“Okay,” and walks away.

The following day the same man approaches the White House and says to the same Marine,

“I would like to go in and meet with President Obama.”

The Marine again tells the man,

“Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Obama is no longer president and no longer resides here.”

The man thanks him and again walks away.

On the third day, the same man approaches the White House and speaks to the very same U.S. Marine, saying,

“I would like to go in and meet with President Obama.”

The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looks at the man and says,

“Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Obama. I’ve told you already that Mr. Obama is no longer the president and no longer resides here. Don’t you understand?”

The old man looks at the Marine and says,

“Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it.”

The Marine snaps to attention, salutes, and says,

“See you tomorrow, Sir!”

Syrian army, allies free east Aleppo village from Islamic State’s grip
[Indian Express] The Syrian army and its allies on Sunday drove Islamic State from the village of Soran, east of Aleppo, state media and a military media unit run by Hezbollah reported, bringing them closer to territory held by Turkey-backed rebels. Several overlapping conflicts are being fought in Syria, dragging in regional and global powers as well as the government and local groups, complicating the battlefield in the north of the country and raising the risk of an escalation in the war.

From al-Manar: Syrian Army, Allies Liberate Four Villages East of Aleppo

Syrian army soldiers and fighters from allied popular defense groups have made more gains against members of the so-called ‘Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’ (ISIL) takfiri group in the country’s northwestern province of Aleppo, pushing terrorists out of four villages.

The media bureau of operations command for the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement announced in a statement on Sunday that Syrian soldiers and their allies had captured the villages of Sora, Moran, Surja al-Saghira and Surja al-Kabira, located about 16 kilometers southwest of al-Bab town, where Turkish-backed Takfiri militants are active.

On August 24, 2016, the Turkish air force and special ground forces kicked off Operation Euphrates Shield inside Syria in a purported bid to support the Free Syrian Army militants and rid the border area of ISIL terrorists and fighters from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Democratic Union Party (PYD).

The offensive was launched in coordination with the US-led military coalition, which has purportedly been fighting ISIL extremists since 2014.

North Dakota Tribe Formally Calls on Pipeline Protesters to Disperse
A Sioux tribal council on Saturday formally asked hundreds of protesters to clear out of three camps near its North Dakota reservation used to stage months of sometimes violent protests against the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe on Friday unanimously passed a resolution calling for the camps to be dismantled, it said on its Facebook page on Saturday. The tribe has been encouraging protesters to go home since the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers agreed to an environmental review of the $3.8 billion project in December.

Despite earlier discussions about alternative sites, the resolution made no provision for relocating the estimated 600 protesters, which include non-native environmental activists and Native Americans from outside the tribe.

"The pipeline fight has moved beyond the camps and our strategy must evolve with the process," Standing Rock Tribal Chairman David Archambault II said in a statement dated Saturday. The council said heavy snowfall in the area had raised the danger of flooding, and this week's clashes with police could imperil the environmental review process.

"Because we worked together, the federal government will prepare an Environmental Impact Statement," the tribe said. "Moving forward, our ultimate objective is best served by our elected officials, navigating strategically through the administrative and legal processes."

Native Americans and environmental activists have said that the pipeline would threaten water resources and sacred lands.

The tribe, which launched the effort to stop the pipeline last year, won a major concession when the government denied Energy Transfer Partners an easement for the pipeline to travel under Lake Oahe, a water source upstream from the reservation.

The tribe's resolution formally called on protesters to leave the area in 30 days, in part because of the potential for environmental damage and safety issues raised by the encampments. But a former council member said the tribe was also concerned that recent clashes could delay the reopening of a highway linking the reservation to Bismarck, the state capital, an hour's drive to the north.

"Our main venture that we have on Standing Rock is the Prairie Knights Casino, and Highway 1806 is the main access road," said Phyllis Young, who currently serves as a consultant to the tribe on the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Tensions increased this week near the construction site, with repeated clashes between protesters and police ahead of Friday's inauguration of President Donald Trump, an unabashed supporter of the project. Police used tear gas and fired beanbag rounds to disperse crowds, and have arrested nearly 40 people since Monday, law enforcement officials said.

One of the main groups representing protesters in the camp signaled a willingness to abide by the tribe's resolution.

"Our network respects the decision of the Cannon Ball district and the tribal council of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe," said Tom Goldtooth, the executive director of the Indigenous Environmental Network. "Vacating the camp does not mean abandoning the resistance."

But Olive Bias, a Cherokee from Colorado who has been at the camps since September, said she expected some people would refuse to leave camp."Some will (leave). Others won't. It's pretty inevitable," she said.

Indonesian authorities detain 17 nationals returning from Syria
[AlAhram] Indonesian authorities have detained 17 nationals returning from Syria, including children, suspected of being involved in radical activity, officials told Rooters on Sunday.

Immigration office front man Agung Sampurno said the people, including a two year-old girl and a three year-old boy, were nabbed

at Soekarno-Hatta airport upon disembarking an Istanbul-Jakarta Turkish Airline flight on Saturday.

They have been handed over to the police's anti-terrorism unit for questioning, Sampurno said.

"They are currently still under an interrogation process. If we find any relation to crime on terrorism, we will continue the investigation. If not, they will be handed over to their families," the chief of Densus 88, police's anti-terrorism unit, Eddy Hartono told Rooters.

Police have been monitoring dozens of returning citizens over concerns they could be linking up with networks to equip a new generation of bandidos holy warriors with the skills and equipment required to launch a major attack at home.

Police killed 33 people and arrested 170 in 2016 for foiled attempts to launch attacks, a significant increase compared to 2015, according to their statistics.

A gun and bomb assault in the heart of Jakarta in January 2016 killed four people and was the first attack in Southeast Asia claimed by Islamic State

Fifth Column
Link between Soros and Women’s March
[NYTLIVE.NYTIMES] To understand the march better, I stayed up through the nights this week, studying the funding, politics and talking points of the some 403 groups that are “partners” of the march. Is this a non-partisan “Women’s March”?

Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the American Humanist Association, a march “partner,” told me his organization was “nonpartisan” but has “many concerns about the incoming Trump administration that include what we see as a misogynist approach to women.” Nick Fish, national program director of the American Atheists, another march partner, told me, “This is not a ‘partisan’ event.” Dennis Wiley, pastor of Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ, another march “partner,” returned my call and said, “This is not a partisan march.”

Really? UnitedWomen.org, another partner, features videos with the hashtags #ImWithHer, #DemsInPhily and #ThanksObama. Following the money, I poured through documents of billionaire George Soros and his Open Society philanthropy, because I wondered: What is the link between one of Hillary Clinton’s largest donors and the “Women’s March”?

I found out: plenty.

By my draft research, which I’m opening up for crowd-sourcing on GoogleDocs, Soros has funded, or has close relationships with, at least 56 of the march’s “partners”
By my draft research, which I’m opening up for crowd-sourcing on GoogleDocs, Soros has funded, or has close relationships with, at least 56 of the march’s “partners,” including “key partners” Planned Parenthood, which opposes Trump’s anti-abortion policy, and the National Resource Defense Council, which opposes Trump’s environmental policies. The other Soros ties with “Women’s March” organizations include the partisan MoveOn.org (which was fiercely pro-Clinton), the National Action Network (which has a former executive director lauded by Obama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett as “a leader of tomorrow” as a march co-chair and another official as “the head of logistics”). Other Soros grantees who are “partners” in the march are the American Civil Liberties Union, Center for Constitutional Rights, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. March organizers and the organizations identified here haven’t yet returned queries for comment.

On the issues I care about as a Muslim, the “Women’s March,” unfortunately, has taken a stand on the side of partisan politics that has obfuscated the issues of Islamic extremism over the eight years of the Obama administration. “Women’s March” partners include the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which has not only deflected on issues of Islamic extremism post-9/11, but opposes Muslim reforms that would allow women to be prayer leaders and pray in the front of mosques, without wearing headscarves as symbols of chastity. Partners also include the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which wrongly designated Maajid Nawaz, a Muslim reformer, an “anti-Muslim extremist” in a biased report released before the election. The SPLC confirmed to me that Soros funded its “anti-Muslim extremists” report targeting Nawaz. (Ironically, CAIR also opposes abortions, but its leader still has a key speaking role.)

Another Soros grantee and march “partner” is the Arab-American Association of New York, whose executive director, Linda Sarsour, is a march co-chair. When I co-wrote a piece, arguing that Muslim women don’t have to wear headscarves as a symbol of “modesty,” she attacked the coauthor and me as “fringe.”

Earlier, at least 33 of the 100 “women of color,” who initially protested the Trump election in street protests, worked at organizations that receive Soros funding, in part for “black-brown” activism. Of course, Soros is an “ideological philanthropist,” whose interests align with many of these groups, but he is also a significant political donor. In Davos, he told reporters that Trump is a “would-be dictator.”

A spokeswoman for Soros’s Open Society Foundations, said in a statement, “There have been many false reports about George Soros and the Open Society Foundations funding protests in the wake of the U.S. presidential elections. There is no truth to these reports.” She added, “We support a wide range of organizations — including those that support women and minorities who have historically been denied equal rights. Many of whom are concerned about what policy changes may lie ahead. We are proud of their work. We of course support the right of all Americans to peaceably assemble and petition their government—a vital, and constitutionally safeguarded, pillar of a functioning democracy.”

Much like post-election protests, which included a sign, “Kill Trump,” were not “spontaneous,” as reported by some media outlets, the “Women’s March” is an extension of strategic identity politics that has so fractured America today, from campuses to communities. On the left or the right, it’s wrong. But, with the inauguration, we know the politics. With the march, “women” have been appropriated for a clearly anti-Trump day.

Arabia
Houthis hold prisoners under bad conditions
ADEN: Houthi militias have turned prisons into hellholes for Yemeni citizens who defy their illegal seizure of power, a recent report said.
The report revealed torture methods used by the rebels and how Yemeni citizens are kidnapped and bargained over for hefty ransoms.

The abductees, according to the report, are categorized and distributed to jails and detention centers according to how “dangerous” they are.
That's how the US does it.
The shocking phenomenon is seen in the city of Dhamar, which has been transformed into a large prison for those who oppose the Houthi fighters and troops loyal to deposed president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Several government buildings have been turned into detention centers to meet the growing number of prisoners. Now there are over 55 prisons and centers in Dhamar that contain more than 2,000 abducted prisoners from different provinces who receive brutal physical and psychological torture, according to Dhamar Media Center.
Oh, no. Anything but "psychological torture..."
Meanwhile, tens of the released prisoners came forward to reveal that they were severely tortured on daily basis. They added that the Houthis established tens of road checkpoints to kidnap opponents and disseminated lists of most-wanted people.
Typical behavior of every regime in this region. Someone must have gotten a hefty check out of this report.
A former prisoner recounted that investigations with prisoners always start after midnight and last until morning.

“Detained people are violently beaten, lashed, waterboarded, tortured with electricity and forced to confess incidents they did not commit,” the prisoner recounted.

“In Al-Shouna prison, the most notorious one, drinking water is not good even for animals! Prisoners are forced to sleep at the same spot where they urinate or excrete. Every 20-30 persons are confined to a single room or basement,” the former anonymous prisoner said.

Local sources elaborated that the rebels consider the journalists and military commanders and Ma’reb fighters loyal to President Hadi Mansoor the most dangerous category, so when any of them is kidnapped, he is held in the political security prison in Dhamar for two days before being moved to the new national security prison, and then to the big prisons in Sanaa. Such people are not released even if huge ransoms are offered.

The second category includes the leaders of the Al-Islah Party and the influential, non-military figures, who are usually jailed in Al-Gharbia prison in Dhamar.

Next comes the category of the ordinary citizens who express their opposing stance on social media platforms, those who tore down Houthi slogans or insulted their leaders. Such prisoners can be liberated for hefty sums of money. The fourth category includes the so-called “deceived people,” who are not proven to support legitimacy, so they are held for at least two months before being released after huge ransoms are paid.

More than nine abductees have died of brutal torture in Dhamar prisons since Houthi rebels seized them in October 2014.

Best soldiers, equipment to be used vs Abu Sayyaf
[MALAYA.PH] ARMED Forces chief Gen. Eduardo Año told ground commanders in Sulu to display their "highest degree of commandership" as he relayed his new timeline of six months within which to defeat the lawless Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...
group.

Año issued the call during a visit of military units in Sulu, an Abu Sayyaf bailiwick, on Wednesday last week, Col. Edgard Arevalo, chief of the AFP’s public affairs office, said yesterday.

Arevalo said Año also vowed to put the "best officers, enlisted personnel, and equipment" on the ground to accomplish the mission. Año’s predecessor, now retired Gen. Ricardo Visaya, also aimed to defeat the Abu Sayyaf during his term but failed.

Asked if additional forces will be deployed to Sulu, Arevalo said there is no need because there are enough soldiers on the ground. There are about 7,500 soldiers operating in Sulu. There are some 300 to 400 Abu Sayyaf men operating in Sulu and Basilan
...Basilan is a rugged, jungle-covered island in the southern Philippines. It is a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf, bandidos, and maybe even orcs. Most people with any sense travel with armed escorts...
, according to the military.

Año set the new deadline last January 6. He also wants the other lawless groups ‐ the Maute Group and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters
...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State...
-- ended in six months.

Arevalo said Año gave "inputs" on how to end the Abu Sayyaf to Brig. Gen. Jesus Mananquil, commander of the Joint Task Force Sulu. He declined to elaborate as he said these are operational in nature.

Queen’s Chaplain Who Questioned Quran Prayers in Cathedral Steps Down After Attempts to ‘Silence, Defenstrate’ Him
[BREITBART] Less than a week after one of the Queen’s Chaplains spoke out against an Islamic Prayer denying the divinity of Jesus Christ being read out in a Scottish Cathedral, the senior churchman has tendered his resignation from that office.

Former Chaplain to Her Majesty the Reverend Gavin Ashenden announced his resignation on his personal blog on Saturday night, anticipating that a BBC Radio 4 segment on him and the controversy surrounding the Koranic readings in a Scottish Cathedral to be broadcast on Sunday morning would reveal his resignation despite his requests to the contrary. Remarking that the decision to step down was "the most honourable course of action" and had come after years of "attempts to silence or defenestrate me", Rev. Ashenden said he had spoken out in the past on controversial matters as a "matter of integrity and responsibility".

Earlier this week Rev. Ashenden called the decision to allow sung prayers from the Koran in a Scottish Cathedral service that demands Allah is worshipped and denies the divinity of Jesus Christ, "blasphemy", and said the Cathedral should apologise to persecuted Christians worldwide.

In a letter published in The Times, the Rev. said: "Quite apart from the wide distress (some would say blasphemy) caused by denigrating Jesus in Christian worship, apologies may be due to the Christians suffering dreadful persecution at the hands of Moslems in the Middle East and elsewhere.

"To have the core of a faith for which they have suffered deeply treated so casually by senior Western clergy such as the Provost of Glasgow is unlikely to have a positive outcome". In an article for the Jersey Evening Post titled ’The Choice is Between Jesus and Mohammed’ penned shortly afterwards, the priest called the decision to choose that particular Koran reading to be read on the Feast of the Epiphany a "glowing cherry of offence to the iced cake of incompetence".

Now his opposition to the Moslem prayer in a British Cathedral has brought the churchman’s tenure as a chaplain to the Queen to a premature end.

Rev. Ashenden said he’d had a conversation "instigated by officials at Buckingham Palace", and it had been made clear that he could not continue to speak out on faith issues of the day, as his position as one of 32 Queen’s chaplains could compromise the political neutrality of the Monarch.
The Monarch is not and indeed cannot be neutral: the Monarch is by title and by law the leader of the Church of England.
While he had defended himself from such charges in the past by asking "in what way is a priest defending the faith on behalf of a monarch who was Defender of the Faith, incongruous or improper?", the clear choice between silence while enjoying a "public honour" and speaking the truth had to be made. He told BBC Radio 4:

"I think it’s clear to me that accepting the role as a chaplain to the Queen does not give one a platform where one can speak controversially in the public space. So, in those circumstances one has to choose between whether one wants to accept an important honour or whether ones chooses to continue a debate in the public space.

"I am fairly clear in my own mind that my duty to my conscience, to my orders, to my understanding of Christianity and my vocation, is that I’m supposed to be speaking out in the public space on behalf of the Christ I serve".

#6  This is what happens when Christianity is watered down.

First of all, anyone who claims to be concerned that Christianity may offend someone is a liar. What is really going on is the person saying that is a non-believer and is themselves offended.

Secondly, you don't battle non-belief with righteous opinion. You battle it with actual scripture. That is the rock the argument stands on. Anything else is sand and will collapse.

These clergy are the last line of defense against darkness and pure evil and they are loosing.

Yemen's Sanaa airport in loyalist artillery range
[Asharq Al-Awsat] Aden, Taiz- Yemeni armed forces continue advancing across all battlefronts taking place at the insurgency-held enclave, Sana’a. Pro-government forces have recorded a considerable push into Sana’a’s Nihm district, local sources said.

The Sana’a airport is now brought into military fire-range, said Popular Resistance Abdullah al Sahndaqi told Asharq Al-Awsat. Houthi-led militias have been exploiting the Sana’a airport against the international community.

In exchange of allowing aid planes to land at the airport, militias want to have the green light on resuming ‘civil’ flights at the airport.

Renewed fighting in Nihm is both fierce and intense, al Shandaqi said.

“Pro-government forces have liberated strategic mountains overlooking the areas Harshafa and Daboua,” added al Shandaqi.

“At least 16 insurgency militants have been killed, and dozens wounded .. another seven were arrested, ” he said.

The Popular Resistance spokesman explained that the areas brought into government control oversees Sana’a’s eastern gates and will greatly aid in future endeavors to free the capital from insurgency hold.

Iran-aligned militants continue to record losses amidst a substantial lowering of morale. Aided by the Saudi-led Arab Coalition forces, the Yemeni National Army and Popular Resistance succeeded in weakening insurgency, chiefly composed of Iran-backed Houthi and Saleh militias, in a number of the Yemeni directorates. Dissent continues to grow louder among the Yemeni tribes against these militias.

Yemeni tribes revealed that Houhti and Saleh militias have come to enforce foreign agendas seeking to destroy Yemen.

Political analysts said that these facts have made the tribes to withdraw fighters from the troops of coup militias while the Houhti and ousted Saleh militias are forcing students to join their ranks.

Taiz, one of the key battlegrounds on which national forces have pushed through, have come under repeated rebel fire.

A medical source at the city’s Al-Rawda hospital told AFP that seven civilians were also wounded by the insurgency’s mortar fire.

A loyalist military source said that the rockets struck one after the other in the city’s Al-Nour district.

The National Army and the Popular Resistance have made a significant progress on seven fronts under the air support of the Arab coalition.

[BUSINESS-STANDARD] Three Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...

by BSF in 2007 from the Indo-Bangladesh border at Petrapole, were today sentenced to death by a court in Bongaon in West Bengal's North 24-Parganas district in a case of waging war against the government.

Pak gunnies Mohammed Younus and Abdullah and an Indian, Muzaffar Ahmed Rathod, were sentenced to death by judge Binay Kumar Pathak of Bongaon fast track court-1.

The three have been booked under IPC Sections 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), 121 (waging, or attempting to wage war) and 122 (collecting arms with intention of waging war against the Government of India), CID DIG (Operations) Nishad Pervej told PTI.

Abdullah and Younus are residents of Pakistain's Bloody Karachi

and Haripur respectively, while Rathod hailed from Jammu and Kashmire's Anantnag.

They were arrested by BSF while trying to enter India through its international border with Bangladesh at Petrapole on April 4, 2007.

"They had a plan to attack army camps in Jammu and Kashmire, but before they could proceed with their plan they were caught by BSF and handed over to Bangaon cop shoppe," he said.

The probe found that all the four were well-trained in using AK-47 rifle, hand grenades and manufacturing bombs.

Sheikh Abdullah Nayeem alias Sameer from Maharashtra, another LeT Lion of Islam who was also arrested along with them, had managed to flee in 2013 when he was being taken to Mumbai.

During investigation, it was found that Abdullah was a teacher while Sheikh Abdullah Nayeem was an engineer by profession. They were involved in an incident of kaboom in Mumbai.

The three underwent polygraph tests, narco tests and brain mapping during the probe conducted by the state CID, he said.

Undue delay in trials ‘murder of justice’
[NATION.PK] Justice Asif Saeed Khosa has said putting the cases in undue delay amounts to murder of justice.

"Courts are under an obligation to provide timely justice to the people; however it is unfortunate that our judicial system is marred by delayed decisions so much so that plea of a grandfather reaches decision in the time of his grandson," said the senior most judge of Supreme Court while addressing a seminar held in connection with Pilot Criminal Justice Project at Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Judicial Academy yesterday.

Lahore High Court Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and other judges, judicial officers and court officers, law officers, members of the bar, and senior lawyers also attended the seminar.

"In order to ensure early administration of justice, delay in the decision must be addressed," Justice Khosa stressed.

Recalling the time when his father practiced law, Justice Khosa said then a criminal case took maximum three days to decide and this target is even achievable today under the existing law. "Only the procedure needs to be changed to get that end," he said while appreciating the LHC chief justice for welcoming his advice to make the project viable.

Justice Khosa said that their objective is to administer justice timely and make it quality based. "All over the world, timely criminal justice is being done by binding hearing of the cases with certain duration. And we can also adopt our system on those lines by bringing changes in our system."

From his own experience as judge of the LHC, he said, after he set the trend of deciding the case on merit on first day of his sitting when the lawyers did not appear, later he found the lawyers ensuring their presence in the cases before him.

In Khosa’s view, a case can be adjourned only in the event when either the lawyer or the judge has passed away. "Putting the cases in undue delay amounts to murder of justice," the SC judge stated.

He hoped the Pilot Criminal Justice Project will ensure provision of quality and timely justice to the people. At the same time, he laid stress on making the police system from investigation to submission of challan
... list of charges ...
transparent and strictly within time.

The judge also stressed on shunning the practice on the part of police of naming some unnecessary people in the FIRs only to please the complainants. He underscored the need for prosecution to cooperate with the courts about completion of challan within 14 or 17 days and appearance of the witnesses. "If judges will observe time limit, lawyers will also follow the suit," he added.

Saudi Arabia to Assist Indonesia in Rehabilitating Terrorists
[JAKARTAGLOBE.BERITASATU] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's intelligence agency, the General Intelligence Directorate or GID, has worked with Indonesia's National Counterterrorism Agency, or BNPT, to help the latter in its effort to prevent radicalization of Indonesian youths and rehabilitating former terrorists.

BNPT Chief Comr. Gen. Suhardi Alius visited Saudi Arabia on Jan. 11-16 to strengthen relations between the two agencies and get top tips from the GID's deradicalization program.

"The visit should help up set up a counterterrorism program which includes deradicalization, from top to bottom," Suhardi said in Jakarta on Saturday (21/01).

Suhardi and other high-ranking BNPT officials also went to the Muhammad bin Naif Consultation and Guidance Center in Saudi Arabia to study rehabilitation of former faceless myrmidons and to learn from their experience of preventing Moslem groups from being radicalized.

"We exchanged various information and knowledge. We also saw how deradicalization is done by the Saudi government," Suhardi said.

The general added that the Indonesian government has been focusing on preventing the spread of radical ideologies in Indonesia as it poses great risks to the country's security and may damage the peaceful image of Islam -- the majority religion in Indonesia.

The head of the intelligence directorate at Saudi Arabia’s Home Affairs Ministry, Abdul Aziz Alhwairny, said BNPT's visit is proof of the good relations between it and GID.

Alhwairny said Saudi Arabia has nothing but praise for BNPT’s effort to fight terrorism in Indonesia.

To honor members of Indonesia's elite counterterror unit Densus 88 who died in the field of battle, the kingdom will offer free hajj pilgrimages to their families.

The Muhammad bin Naif Center will also offer deradicalization training for BNPT officers, Alhwairny added.

A deradicalization program typically involves rehabilitating former faceless myrmidons and radicalized youths before returning them to their communities.

Currently more than 240 convicted faceless myrmidons in 72 prisons all around Indonesia and 478 freed former terror convicts in 17 provinces have undergone rehabilitation programs.

Military holds major operation against PKK in Mardin
Turkish security forces have launched a major operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the southeastern province of Mardin. Clashes erupted between the security forces and PKK militants in the Artuklu and Kızıltepe districts of the province, prompting the authorities to impose a curfew in the Sulak neighborhood of Artuklu.

The security forces have tracked a woman seen in front of the district governor’s office in the Kızıltepe district and carried out a raid in a house in the Atatürk neighborhood on Jan. 21, where the woman had been heading to. Clashes erupted during the raid and the woman, who was determined to be a PKK militant, was “neutralized,” according to the military, adding that another PKK militant was “neutralized” early on Jan. 22.

It was later determined that a group of PKK militants were between central Artuklu and Nusaybin districts. Upon that discovery, a wide-scale operation was launched in the area, during which two PKK militants were caught and two others managed to escape. According to the security forces, a PKK militant code-named “Kawa,” who was among the perpetrators of the PKK attack in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on Jan. 16, which left five soldiers dead, was also caught in the operation.

As clashes intensified, a curfew was imposed in the Sulak neighborhood, and the Governor’s Office released a statement on Jan. 22 saying that operations would be carried out in the area.

Meanwhile, a large cache of weapons and ammunition was found in the Fırat neighborhood of Nusaybin, where a curfew has been in force, including a rocket launcher, home-made explosives and rifles.

Another operation has been ongoing against PKK militants with aerial support in the Doğubeyazıt district of the eastern province of Ağrı since Jan. 19. According to a statement released by the Governor’s Office, village guards and four battalions of soldiers are participating in the operation.

Crumbling lira pressures Turkish retailers as economy slows
Subtitled, "Investors flee emerging dictatorship sultanate"
Turkish businessman Tekin Acar had contracts to open branches of his leading cosmetics chain in ten new shopping malls this year. A few days ago he canceled nine of them after sharp falls in the lira meant he would struggle to afford the rents.

Turkey's currency has lost around a quarter of its value since the middle of last year, causing havoc for retailers selling imported goods or paying rent pegged to the U.S. dollar. Many were already suffering from a sharp economic slowdown and dwindling tourism numbers after a spate of deadly bombings.

Foreign brands in Turkey are also suffering. Dutch clothing chain C&A, Britain's Topshop, German cosmetics firm Douglas and U.S.-based dietary supplement retailer GNC (GNC.N) have disappeared from shopping centers in recent months.

Trump on women's marches: I thought we just had an election

#1  An interesting comment from an American Jew who emigrated to Israel a decade ago:

Go home, Pussyhat Dolls

[IsraelTimes] After a few days of complaining, most of my liberal friends calmed down, although a few still preached doom and gloom.

But the inauguration stoked the fires once more. And in place of pantsuits, someone knitted pink “pussyhats,” which protesters could wear as a show of strength. Because, as Betty White has expressed, those things can take a pounding. And a grabbing. Hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of women and male allies gathered around the country and in selected places around the world to speak out against… well, what exactly?

This is where I get fuzzy. What are the protesters expecting? In Facebook discussions, some of my liberal friends have said they want to remind Trump to be compassionate in his choices. I have some serious doubts that a movement that can be comfortable with Ashley Judd referring to the president’s cabinet as “Nazis renamed” can expect Trump to listen to their concerns.

Others said the protests were a reminder that more than half of the voters didn’t support Trump as president. True. Of course, less than 60 percent of those eligible to vote actually chose to do so. And many of those people aren’t exactly excited about the current protests, given that they take place before President Trump has done anything substantive that the left could expect to be changed.

2 shot to death in Quetta
Unidentified assailants opened fire and killed two people in Quetta's Satellite Town area on Sunday evening, reported DawnNews.

Police officials said the gunmen were on a motorcycle when they opened fire and critically injured two tribal locals.

The injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Quetta but they succumbed to their injuries.

The motive behind the attack remains to be ascertained. The assailants escaped unhurt from the crime scene.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the killing. Police and personnel from other law enforcement agencies reached the spot and an investigation is underway.

Balochistan has been experiencing incident violence and targeted killings since more than a decade. More than 1,400 incidents targeting the minority Shia and Hazara community have taken place in the province during the past 15 years.

While sectarian terrorism in Balochistan has disproportionately targeted the Hazara community, easily identifiable because of their distinctive physical appearance, other Shias — especially pilgrims travelling to and from Iran — have not been spared either.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
US volunteer dies fighting for Kurds
[ARA News] Syrian Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) on Sunday announced the death of the US volunteer Paolo Todd [aka Kawa Amed] in clashes with Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants near Raqqa.

Todd, born in Los Angeles, California, was killed on 15 January while fighting against ISIS in the Suwaydiya village west of Raqqa, in northeastern Syria.

The YPG in an official statement said that the war against ISIS is not only a fight against terrorism, but also a fight for humanity.

“My name is Paolo Todd, I am from California, my Kurdish name is Kawa Amed. I came to Rojava to support Kurdish people and indigenous right around the world,” the US volunteer had said in a video published on social media.

“We are going to go to the frontline, I will be in heavy weapons unit, and I am very happy to do this to support the Kurdish people and Rojava revolution, long live Kurdistan,” he said.

Todd joined the YGP on the 4th of November, 2016.

The YPG in the statement praised the ‘martyrdom’ of Paolo Todd and promised to continue their struggle.

On 16 January, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that three western fighters (one British, one Canadian and one American) that have volunteered in the SDF were killed as part of the Euphrates Wrath Campaign, which was launched on 6 November with support of the US-led coalition.

“In Syria, our partner forces continue the isolation of Raqqa, clearing more than 3,000 square kilometers since the start of their operations,” Pentagon spokesperson Peter Cook said last week.

On Sunday, the SDF said they captured the village of Suwaydiya Kabirah, killing at least 85 ISIS fighters.

The SDF have reached the outskirts of Tabqa Dam and they aim to cut off the ISIS supply lines between the two sides of the Euphrates River.

Kurdish peshmerga fighter names his son after Donald Trump
[HERALDNET] Hassan Jamil’s love affair with Donald Trump began in the thick of the American presidential campaign, when he found himself glued to his television screen on the other side of the world each night, transfixed by the billionaire’s “beautiful” hair, commanding presence and magnetic speaking style.

Jamil, who doesn’t speak English, couldn’t understand the Republican nominee’s words but said it didn’t matter. The candidate’s forceful cadence told him everything he needed to know.

The night Trump clinched the presidency, Jamil made a decision that took his pregnant wife by surprise.

“I decided that if my wife gave birth to a boy, I would 100 percent name him Trump,” he said.

Two weeks later, on Nov. 23, Hassan’s wife gave birth not only to a baby boy but also to what appears to be a burgeoning Kurdish legend.

His name: Trump Jamil Hassan – a.k.a. “Little Trump.”

Jamil, a 25-year-old father of three and Kurdish peshmerga fighter, said he was proud of his decision. “What I like most and admire about Donald Trump is that he’s a confident man and a successful businessman. He became a leader because he has self-confidence, otherwise he wouldn’t be president.”

Egypt renews troop mission in Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait
[AlAhram] The National Defence Council meeting was headed by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

Egypt's National Defence Council agreed in a Sunday meeting to extend the deployment of Egyptian Armed Forces units in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait, MENA reported.

A statement by the Egyptian presidency said that the meeting approved extending the mission of the Egyptian Armed Force units on a foreign assignment to defend the country's national security in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait.

The statement did not put a timeframe on the duration of the extension, according to MENA.

The meeting was headed by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and attended by the ministers of defence, finance, foreign affairs and interior, as well as commanders of Egypt's Armed Force along with the chiefs of intelligence agencies.

U.S. Ambassador To Kazakhstan To Observe Syria Peace Talks
The U.S. State Department says it will not send a delegation from Washington to attend Syria peace talks due to start in Astana on January 23, but the United States will be represented by the U.S. ambassador to Kazakhstan.

The statement from Washington on January 21 came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump took a formal oath of office.

The current U.S. ambassador to Kazakhstan, George Krol, was appointed to that post by former President Barack Obama in early 2015. Krol previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Uzbekistan and to Belarus.

Krol also formerly worked as the director of the State Department's Office of Russian Affairs, and held diplomatic posts in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kyiv, Minsk, Warsaw, and New Delhi.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on January 20 that Moscow hoped Trump would send a Middle East expert to the Astana talks, which are sponsored by Russia, Iran, and Turkey.

The United Nations Security Council on January 20 expressed support for the peace talks in Astana, but stressed that the effort must not serve to sideline UN-led negotiations. The UN is sending its Syria envoy, Staffan de Mistura, to the talks.

UN Security Council Council president Olof Skoog, a diplomat from Sweden, said on January 20 that the Astana talks could help shore up a cease-fire and "represent an important stepping stone coming back to UN-led talks in Geneva thereafter."

Western powers have for weeks questioned the purpose of the Astana talks and raised concerns that they could complicate ongoing processes aimed at ending the nearly six-year war in Syria.

to reverse US policy on Afghanistan or face a "historically shameful defeat", a US-based monitoring group reported Sunday.

An article, which the SITE Intelligence Group said appeared on the Taliban’s website and social media, described the freshly inaugurated leader of the free world as "an enigma both to the Americans and the billions of people around the world".

The article said that Afghans hoped Trump and his cabinet would not follow in the footsteps of previous White House administrations.

Afghanistan, which the US invaded on October 7, 2001 in a bid to topple al-Qaeda hosts the Taliban, has become Washington’s longest military intervention since Vietnam.

It has also been the most costly, with more than $100 billion (93 billion euros) spent.

on Friday in an apparent attempt to prevent advancing Iraqi forces from using it as a base in their offensive to capture the city, witnesses said on Sunday.

The Mosul Hotel, shaped as a stepped pyramid, appeared to be leaning to one side after the kabooms, two witnesses said by phone. They requested anonymity, saying the snuffies killed those they caught communicating with the outside world.

The Mosul Hotel stands close to the Tigris river which divides the city. Iraqi forces appear about to take full control of the east and to be preparing to attack the western bank.

A U.S.-led coalition is providing air and ground support to the Iraqi forces in their campaign to take back Mosul from the hardline Sunni group, which captured the city in 2014 and declared a "caliphate" that also spanned parts of Syria.

The Iraqi army announced on Sunday that all districts of Mosul east of the Tigris had been cleared of Islamic State snuffies except one, al-Rashidiya in the north.

State TV said the army had set up several bridges across the Tigris, south of Mosul, to facilitate the movement of troops in preparation for the offensive on the western side of the city.

Mosul's five bridges across the Tigris had already been partially damaged by U.S.-led air strikes to slow the bully boys' movement, before Islamic State blew up two of them.

The Grand Turk
Militant who appeared in ISIL propaganda video ‘detained twice’ in Turkey
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militant who appeared in a propaganda video by the jihadist group threatening Turkey has previously been detained twice in Turkey and released, according to information gathered by the Doğan News Agency.

The recently identified militant, Hasan Aydın from ISIL’s “Yaşar Group,” was detained by police in 2012 and 2015.

Aydın was detained in 2012 in an operation targeting al-Qaeda in the southern province of Adana but was later released. He was again detained in 2015 while attempting to cross the border into Syria from the southern province of Hatay.

Military equipment and a drone were found in the minibus that Aydın was using and he was referred to court. He was later released on condition of judicial control.
He was then given five thousand lira, five hundred dollars, a passport and stripper clips for his rifle...
It has emerged that Aydın’s family moved to Adana’s Yüreğir district 40 years ago from the Çermik district of the southeastern province of Diyarbakır.

His brother’s reported him as missing, with his wife and two children, on May. 8, 2015. Aydın called his family four months later and told them he had joined ISIL.

“We have arrived in Syria. We are in Manbij, we are doing fine, don’t worry about us,” he reportedly told his family.

Aydın’s two older brothers Remzi and Recep Aydın were detained in an operation in Adana on Dec. 31, 2016 and were later arrested. Davut Aydın, the ISIL militant’s third older brother who was detained in the same operation, was referred to court and was released on condition of judicial control. Saying that his brother should have been arrested, Davut Aydın said the family is suffering.

“I wish they had arrested him at that time rather than releasing him. If that had been the case, Hasan Aydın would be in jail and my nieces would be with me. At least then he [Hasan Aydın] wouldn’t be able to serve such a cruel group. Now I don’t even know if my nieces are alive,” he told the Doğan News Agency.

Denmark allows its soldiers to fight ISIL in Syria
Danish troops fighting in Iraq will now be able to cross into Syria as part of the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the Danish Defense Ministry said in a statement on Jan. 20. Denmark’s parliament authorized special operations soldiers “to perform their tasks in the Iraqi-Syrian border area,” the statement said.

“The fight against ISIL is an important foreign and security policy priority for the government,” Danish Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen told the Ritzau news agency after parliamentary discussions in Copenhagen.

Samuelsen said the coalition had asked Denmark, a NATO member, to send troops to Syria, but he did not reveal how many or where they would be deployed in the war-torn country, nor when.

“The government has, therefore, based on a specific request from the coalition, decided to expand the functions of special operations forces in Iraq and Syria,” Samuelsen said in remarks quoted by public broadcaster TV2.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the offense is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The office said most of those arrested will be released without having to post bail and must return to court in February.
You'll never see them again. That's the mistake right there, and one that I hope Mr. Sessions tightens up...
A first group of 10 men appeared in Superior Court just before 3 p.m., and their lawyer entered a not guilty plea on their behalf. A judge released all of them on the condition they not get re-arrested in the District of Columbia.

Interim D.C. police chief Peter Newsham said Friday that 217 people were being charged with rioting.

The arrests took place in a four-block stretch of downtown Washington around the time of President Trump’s swearing-in ceremony.

The arrests came after some protesters created chaos. Windows of downtown businesses were smashed, and police deployed pepper spray and "sting balls" against the crowd.

#7  I think the DC system requires every person charged to be fingerprinted and photographed. This alone may get people to return for the trial.

With respect to bail or no bail, the judge has considerable discretion. If the alleged felon does not represent a threat to the community or a flight risk, then no bail will be required even if it is a felony. Determining 'threat' and 'flight risk' is obviously subjective.

The rebels took their dead to a military hospital in Hodeida, a major western port city they control, a medical source told AFP.

On the pro-government side, 14 soldiers were killed and 22 maimed, according to medics in the southern port city of Aden where President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi's government is based.

Coalition warplanes and Apache attack helicopters have been pounding rebels for several days in support of pro-Hadi forces attempting to retake the Red Sea city of Mokha, military sources said.

By Sunday, loyalist forces were within 10 kilometres (six miles) of Mokha, they said, but the offensive has been slowed by mines laid by rebel forces.

Arabia
Houthi rebels using child soldiers
Riyadh- The Yemeni government accused on Saturday Houthi and former president Ali Abdullah Saleh militias of recruiting 10,000 child soldiers in a blatant violation of human rights.

Undersecretary of the Yemeni Human Rights Ministry Nabil Abdel Hafiz told Asharq Al-Awsat in a telephone interview from Aden that the ministry had estimated the number of child soldiers recruited by rebel militias at about 10,000.

“Those rebel forces deal with children by the concept of gangs and armed groups,” Abdel Hafiz said.

The minister said that the numbers discovered by the Yemeni government apparatus were quickly expanding and that those numbers only reveal a small part of the rebels’ inhuman practices. “The rebel forces are conducting some practices, which are very difficult to track, particularly in the rebel-controlled areas,” Abdel Hafiz said.

The ministry also tracked rebel forces while planning harassments in the simplest areas of social life.

The Yemeni Coalition to Monitor Human Rights Violations issued a report detailing the missions of the recruited children, who are tasked to fight, monitor baggage, alternate on checkpoints, and distribute food, drinks and ammunitions to fighters combatting on the frontlines across the Yemeni directorates.

The report also documented that child soldiers were recruited for inhuman purposes, by force or under economic pressures exerted on their families.

“Some families accept that their children be recruited as child soldiers due to poverty and the urgent need for food. Those cases are mainly witnessed among refugees, who are promised by Houthi leaders that their children would not be sent to the frontline battles, but will only work as security guards,” the report said.

It added that Houthi militias had also sent those children to military training camps located in several Yemeni directorates, including Sana’a and Omran. Those children would then be taken to fight on the frontlines.

The Yemeni Army also found several with the children guidelines including misleading statements that promoted terrorist and taqfiri ideas, in addition to photos of former founder of the Iranian Revolution Khomeini and Secretary General of the Lebanese terrorist so-called Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah.

Home Front: Politix
New federal prosecutor will focus on civil rights
The U.S. Attorney’s Office of Montana has hired a prosecutor to focus solely on civil rights cases, both civil and criminal.
Montana's population is 90 percent white, 6 percent Indians, and four percent everyone else, of which the largest population is Asian at .5 percent. It's obviously a festering sore of racial tensions, which is why they need a full-time prosecutor to handle the problem.
"We’ve always done them, but we’ve not had a dedicated position, so we’ve had to partner with main Justice and the Civil Rights Division" in Washington, DC, said U.S. Attorney Mike Cotter. "With this particular position, we’ll have a greater capacity to handle these cases."

The hire, one of several similar appointments around the country, was part of a last-ditch effort by outgoing Attorney General Loretta Lynch to protect the Justice Department's ability to prosecute civil rights cases in the Trump Administration.

Decentralizing the civil-rights effort is seen by some as a way to keep boots on the ground even if the Washington office of the Civil Rights Division is greatly reduced.

The Montana announcement is in stark contrast to initial media reports that President Donald Trump may be planning to scale back the Civil Rights Division. Critics have cast Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions as a potential barrier to civil rights prosecutions, which he has denied.

American civil rights laws are far-reaching and broad, covering hate crimes; discrimination, including for jobs, housing or loans; and violations of rights, such as voting or for members of the military. In some cases, federal law includes more protected groups than the state. For instance, Montana law does not cover discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

ISIS actively recruiting in Kunar
Lessee: An AR-15, a pickup truck and $1k a month. No, wait. That's the cartels, and that's in Mexico
The loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group have started recruitment in the eastern Kunar province of Afghanistan, it has been reported.

Provincial high peace council officials and some local tribal elders have informed regarding the recruitment process of the ISIS group in this province.

The head of the high peace council for Kunar, Mohammad Ismail Munib, told RFE/RL that the loyalist of the terror group have started advertisements and are spreading propaganda among the residents of Kunar.

He said the issue has sparked concerns among the local residents and ISIS loyalists move among the people to attract them to their ranks.

Shahwali Salarzai, head of Kunar’s labor association, has said the group could attract the jobless youths whose numbers are considerably high.

This comes as the Ministry of Interior (MoI) officials said Saturday that the terror group still pose serious threats to Afghanistan despite their hardly suppressed in counter-terrorism operations.

MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqi told reporters in Kabul that the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) continue to maintain pressure on the loyalists of the terror group in East of Afghanistan.

Sediqi further added that ISIS loyalists have managed to harm the residents of Nangarhar province and more operations have been conducted to prevent ISIS loyalists expand foothold in Nangarhar districts and other provinces.

14 pro government militia die in Mali
[al-Manar] A pro-government militia in Mali said that it had lost 14 fighters in an attack blamed on former rebels Saturday, three days after a suicide car bomber left more than 70 dead.

Some 77 people were killed and 120 wounded in the suicide blast Wednesday which targeted a camp in northern Gao housing former rebels and pro-government militia — who are signatories to a 2015 peace accord struck with the government.

Hundreds of people gathered in the capital Bamako Saturday to pay their respects to victims of the attack on the last of three days of national mourning called by President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

The attack, Mali’s worst in years, was claimed by the group of Algerian terrorist Mokhtar Belmokhtar, allied to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

The attack occurred as former rebels from the Tuareg-led CMA movement prepared to go on a joint patrol with pro-government militia members under the terms of the peace deal.

Despite hopes of unity in the wake of the blast, fresh clashes broke out Saturday between groups that have signed up to the agreement, according to the pro-government group GATIA (the Imghad and Allies Tuareg Self-Defence Group).

A post near Tin-Assako in the northeastern Kidal region was attacked Saturday, GATIA secretary general Fahad Ag Almahoud said, accusing “elements of the CMA” — referring to ex-rebels from the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA).

The information was confirmed by a Kidal resident reached by telephone, but the CMA did not immediately respond to the allegations.

The United Nations has deployed 13,000 troops in Mali while France, the former colonial power, has an additional 4,000 soldiers stationed there.

The UN Security Council agreed last week to consider setting up a sanctions regime for Mali to punish those who are hindering efforts to implement the 2015 peace accord.

ISIS begins retreat from Raqqa
Moscow, Riyadh, Beirut- While eyewitnesses reported on Saturday a mass exodus of ISIS commanders and fighters from the Syrian town of Raqqa to Deir Ezzor, the Kremlin broke its silence concerning disputes with Iran in several issues related to the Syrian file, particularly the current disagreement between Moscow and Tehran regarding the participation of U.S. representatives in the Astana talks.

Eyewitnesses in the Raqqa city told the German news agency that since the start of 2017, hundreds of ISIS commanders and fighters were seen leaving the city in the direction of Deir Ezzor, adding that the majority of the ISIS members were Arab and foreign fighters.

An eyewitness in al-Thakana neighborhood in the Raqqa town told the German news agency that “early this month, ISIS commanders mainly nationals from Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey had already left around 30 houses located in the neighborhood of al-Thakana, carrying with them a small quantity of luggage, which seems to only include their clothes.”

The report said that ISIS commanders had also emptied tens of houses in the neighborhoods of al-Firdaous, al-Thakana and Harat al-Haramiya.

ISIS had controlled the Raqqa city at the start of 2014. There are around 500 thousand people living in the city, mainly from the areas of Palmyra, al-Sakhnah and the countryside of Aleppo and Idlib.

Meanwhile, Russia deployed six long-range supersonic Tupolev Tu-22M3 bombers from Russian territory to strike ISIS targets in the Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Saturday, according to Russia Today.

The bombers hit militant base camps, weapon stockpiles, and armored vehicles, the report said.

On Saturday, the Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said during a television interview that Iran had opposed U.S. involvement at the Astana talks.

“But, Russia invited representatives from the U.S. administration to participate in Astana,” Peskov said.
The spokesperson ruled out that the talks would yield to any serious deals.

But, he said, “It’s clear that it will be impossible to constructively regulate the Syrian issue without the participation of the United States.”

The peace negotiations on Syria will take place on Monday in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir received at his office in Riyadh on Saturday General Coordinator of Supreme Commission for Negotiations of the Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, Riad Hijab.

The Grand Turk
More than 215,000 Turks used ByLock smartphone app
Apparently having a secure smartphone is a crime in Turkey. You're automatically a member of the insidious FETO and a Gulen supporter.
More than 215,000 people have been using ByLock smartphone app, an encrypted messaging application that is said to have been used by members of the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) of the U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, according to an indictment prepared as a part of the FETÖ investigation.

An indictment was prepared for a total of 26 Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) employees, of whom 21 are currently arrested, who were detained over ByLock. The indictment, in which the prosecutor seeks up to 15 years in prison for the suspects, featured the most extensive numbers and analysis regarding ByLock usage.

Prepared by the Terror and Organized Crime Bureau of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, the indictment said the number of people registered as using ByLock is 215,092. The authorities have deciphered the passwords of some 184,298 users.
"What is the password to your phone?"
"I'll never tell!"
"Mustafa, bring me the number seven truncheon."
"Okay, okay, the password is..."
"Never mind, I'm going to beat it out of you anyway!"
The number of groups formed in the application is determined to be 31,886 and the total number of the contents of the messages is 17,169,632, of which 15,520,552 were deciphered.

Some 60,473 users have received or sent messages at least once, while 78,165 people were determined to have used the voice call service. The number of people who used the application only for voice calls is 46,799. According to the indictment, the total number of content of emails is 3,158,388, of which 2,293,518 were deciphered.
The FBI should be this good...
The indictment, which said the suspects downloaded and started using ByLock in August 2014, was sent to the Istanbul 25th Heavy Penal Court. The suspects received orders from the same source and acted as a part of an illegal organization, the indictment also said.

In addition, the indictment said the users did not buy the phone lines by giving their own names, changed their phones frequently, and used programs like Skype, Tango, ByLock, Line, Karaotlak and Whatsapp for their encryption feature. Moreover, the indictment also stated that Gülen ordered the FETÖ members to use ByLock, saying those who do not would be betraying the movement.

He also allegedly ordered the FETÖ members to delete ByLock from their phones after the July 2016 foiled coup, widely believed to have been masterminded by soldiers loyal to Gülen.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Crucial Syria summit begins in Kazakhstan
We'll the be judge of how 'crucial' it is...
The crucial Syria summit, which will bring Syria’s government and rebel fighters to a negotiating table for the first time after nearly six years of war, following 23 days of cease-fire, is set to start in Kazakhstan’s capital on Jan. 23.

Hosted in Astana, the talks will bring together an opposition delegation composed of rebel groups, which will be supported by political advisers, negotiating with the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in an initiative sponsored by rebel-backing Turkey and regime allies Russia and Iran.

Though the talks have been welcomed by all parties in the conflict, delegates from both sides headed to Kazakhstan with apparently opposing ideas about the goals, with al-Assad on Jan. 19 insisting that rebels lay down their arms in exchange for an amnesty deal.

Although al-Assad said the talks would prioritize reaching a cease-fire, Damascus has insisted it will seek a “comprehensive” political solution to the conflict that has killed more than 300,000 and displaced over half of the country’s population.

The rebels, meanwhile, say they will focus solely on reinforcing a frail nationwide truce brokered by Moscow and Ankara last month, the release of captives held by the al-Assad regime, and an end to regime sieges on opposition-held areas, according to Mohamed Alloush of Jaish al-Islam (Army of Islam), who will head the Syrian opposition’s delegation at the talks.

Moscow said this week that the objective was to “consolidate” the cease-fire and involve rebel field commanders in the “political process” to end the bloodshed, creating a basis for a new round of U.N.-hosted negotiations in Geneva next month.

The Kazakh Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Jan. 22 that the talks would start at 1:00 p.m. (7:00 a.m. GMT) on Jan. 23 in Astana and that they were scheduled to end in the afternoon of Jan. 24, just one day after its initiation.

While the talks will be held in the city’s luxury Rixos President Hotel, where staff members are setting up a single large table in a conference room under blue banners bearing the hashtag #AstanaProcess, according to AFP, rebels and regime figures are expected to sit in the same room, along with U.N. Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and representatives of Russia, Turkey and Iran.

Syria’s UN Ambassador Bashar al-Jaafari, an experienced negotiator involved in past failed talks in Geneva, will head the regime delegation in Astana.

The Turkish delegation will be chaired by Deputy Undersecretary of the Turkish Foreign Ministry Sedat Önal, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency, which also reported that Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MİT) and General Staff officials would also be present at the talks.

While the same report said that Russia’s Special Envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov were the figures to represent Russia at the talks, Doğan News Agency quoted Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry as saying that the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Middle East and North Africa Department head Vershinin Sergey Vasilievich would represent the country.

Iran, the talks’ third sponsor, would be represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Jaber Ansari, the country’s Isna news agency reported.

Kazakhstan will be represented by its Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov.

Alloush, who was accompanied by around a dozen rebel figures, including Fares Buyush of the Idlib Army, Hassan Ibrahim of the Southern Front and Mamoun Hajj Moussa of Suqur al-Sham, when he landed in Astana, will lead a “military delegation” of around 14 people, in addition to 21 legal and political advisers from the opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) umbrella group, according to AFP.

But key rebel group Ahrar al-Sham said it would snub the Astana talks over cease-fire violations and ongoing Russian air strikes on the country. Ahrar al-Sham nonetheless said it would support decisions taken by other rebel groups represented at the talks if they were “in the interest of the nation.”

The U.S. under new President Donald Trump will also be represented - with the U.S. Ambassador to Astana George Krol taking part, while not sending a delegation from Washington.

Iraqi rebels eject ISIS from Suwaydiya near Raqqa
[ARA News] Raqqa – Supported by the US-led coalition’s air cover, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) expelled Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants from the strategic town of Suwaydiya in western Raqqa, as part of the Euphrates Wrath Operation, officials confirmed on Sunday.

The SDF started to clear the town from ISIS leftovers and landmines.

Abdullah al-Ahmadi, an SDF officer, told ARA News that their forces closed in on Tabqa Dam. “Our forces today liberated the Suwaydiya town from ISIS. We are currently approaching the strategic Tabqa Dam.”

“Soon we’ll attack ISIS at the key dam in order to cut off a main ISIS supply line between the town of Tabqa and Raqqa city,” al-Ahmadi said.

Khaled Hussein, an SDF fighter, also confirmed the route. “We are now very close to taking the Tabqa Dam from ISIS,” he told ARA News.

“The Syrian Democratic Forces, YPG and YPJ are prepared to storm the dam and liberate it from ISIS,” Hussein said.

Islamic State’s militants have been using car bombs, IEDs and landmines in a bid to impede the SDF advance towards the group’s de facto capital city of Raqqa. ISIS has also launched several attempts to infiltrate into SDF-held areas in Raqqa countryside.

The group has further planted hundreds of landmines in villages and along main roads that lead to Raqqa city.

The SDF launched the second phase of the Euphrates Wrath Operation on 10 December. SDF leaders announced that they’ve so far cleared over 2500 square kilometres of land as part of the campaign.

Hamas Releases Islamic State Loyalists From Detention
This is getting silly. Only yesterday we had the report they'd been arrested, though to be fair it didn't say when that happened, and immediately afterward they tell a Breitbart reporter they'd turned some loose -- what are they playing at?
[Breitbart] Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, has released 13 Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
loyalists from detention after they were tossed in the clink
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
three months ago as part of the movement’s attempts to reconcile with Egyptian authorities by cracking down on radical Islamists in the Strip, a top jihadi operative in Gazoo told Breitbart Jerusalem.

The unannounced release included jihadists who tried to resist arrest by firing on Hamas troops, as well as others who were arrested while firing rockets at Israel, the operative said.

Another freed detainee was Ahmad Taleb, a jihadi Death Eater who was arrested wearing an boom belt en route to join IS ranks in Sinai, the operative said.

The source said that the release of the detainees resulted from an agreement between Hamas and Welayat Sinai,
...previously known as Ansar Bayt al Maqdis, currently affiliated with ISIS, before that pledging their blood and their lives to Al Qaeda...
IS’ Egyptian affiliate. As part of the agreement, Welayat Sinai facilitated the smuggling of goods through cross-border tunnels connecting Sinai and the Gazoo Strip, a move that had been delayed for months after Hamas refused to allow maimed IS fighters into the Strip for medical care.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
he said, more than 700 jihadists remain in Hamas facilities. He charged that Hamas seeks to do Egypt’s bidding, hoping to be rewarded with the lifting of the blockade on Gazoo, while at the same time strengthening its ties with Cairo at the expense of Ramallah.

Last week, Egypt temporarily opened the crossing and started developing a commercial zone to facilitate exchanges of goods, but remains determined that progress will rely on security cooperation.

Some Hamas officials have protested what they deemed the slow pace of Egypt’s gestures towards them. They claim that Egypt will not give them preference over the Paleostinian Authority and Cairo’s approach is tactical and temporary. Therefore, they say, Hamas should not alienate Sinai jihadists.

A Hamas police official confirmed the release of the Death Eaters, while refusing to indicate their number. He said that the release was part of an agreement with IS in Sinai.

Sought DHKP-C militant caught in Turkey’s northwest
An outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C)
...which sometimes has Marxist at the beginning of its name and sometimes is described as "a radical, ultra-leftist group"...
militant who attacked the Istanbul police headquarters and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) headquarters late on Jan. 20 was apprehended by police in the northwestern province of Tekirdağ on Jan. 22.

DHKP-C militant Şerif Turunç, 43, who was sought by the Interior Ministry with an arrest warrant and a 300,000-Turkish Liras reward, carried out the attacks with a light anti-tank weapon.

According to newly obtained information, Turunç entered Turkey illegally with another DHKP-C militant, Bilgehan Karpat, and he attempted to return to Greece by changing the way he looks in order not to be recognized.

A glock weapon was found on him when he was apprehended.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin said on Twitter late on Jan. 20 that no one was injured in the attack on the police headquarters, and an investigation had been launched.

No injuries were reported after the attack on the AKP headquarters, which came an hour-and-a-half after the initial attack, according to a Twitter post by the AKP’s provincial head, Selim Temurci, on Jan. 20. He told reporters later on Jan. 20 that the rocket pierced the wall of the building but did not explode, adding that two assailants were involved in the attack. The rocket reportedly did not explode due to malfunction in the device.

Police determined that the fingerprints on the weapons were the same, and police are evaluating whether Karpat is the second militant involved in the attacks.

The police started a massive manhunt after the attacks and carried out raids. Security forces raided 15 addresses across Turkey’s largest city and five people were taken into custody over suspected links to the attacker.

According to the allegations, Turunç was seen in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district on Jan. 21. He arrived in the Bağlarçeşme neighborhood via a taxi and got out of the vehicle after seeing the police. He then fired on the police vehicle from behind. Clashes erupted after the police fired back.

Turunç entered side-streets during the clashes and managed to escape after leaving a hand grenade and his backpack at the scene. Plenty of police officers and bomb disposal teams were dispatched to the scene. A weapon, hand gloves, rope, medicine and several clothes were found in the backpack.

The police examined the taxi and took fingerprints from it after the incident. The taxi driver, who was not identified, said Turunç threatened him by saying that he was carrying a bomb. The police have been investigating the security cameras around the scene.

Mosul: Iraqi forces 'liberate' east from ISIL fighters
[Al Jazeera] The Iraqi army announced on Sunday that all districts of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
east of the Tigris River had been cleared of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS, also known as ISIS) fighters, after retaking two areas.

Government forces also said that the army has sealed control of the east, with the exception of al-Rashidiya neighbourhood, located north of the city.

A military statement announced that the Iraqi army recaptured "Al-Milayeen neighbourhood and al-Binaa al-Jahiz area, and raised the Iraqi flag over the buildings."

"These are the last neighbourhoods of the centre of the city (on) the left bank," the statement added, referring to eastern Mosul.

According to the statement, federal forces had retaken control of the road linking Mosul, Iraq's second city, to Dohuk, a scenic provincial capital in the west of the autonomous region of Kurdistan.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, had already declared the city's east "liberated" on Wednesday, and has previously said that the group would be driven out of the country by April.

Residents of parts of eastern Mosul have already attempted to resume a normal daily life, despite the circulation of goods being restricted.

Also on Sunday, dozens of students gathered at the gate of the University of Mosul, which had been the group’s headquarters throughout its rule which began in 2014.

They celebrated the recapture of one of the country's most prestigious institutions, but now severely damaged due to the fighting, by chanting slogans, raising an Iraqi flag above the campus entrance, and a banner calling for its reopening.

In a separate incident, ISIS destroyed a landmark hotel in an attack in Western Mosul on Friday, as an attempt to prevent government forces advancing from potentially utilizing it as a base.

According to witnesses, the kaboom on the Mosul Hotel left the pyramid shaped building tilted to one side.

The hotel stands close to the Tigris River, which divides the city. Government forces are reportedly preparing to attack the western bank in efforts force out ISIS group fighters in Mosul, their last major stronghold in the country.

The difference between the two is that in colonial days Senegal was ruled by La Belle France and The Gambia (so-called because there's only one of it, unlike Guinea, of which there are the Republic of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, New Guinea, the English coin in circulation between 1663 and 1813, and Guyana, which sounds like it should be another one) was ruled by Britain...
's ex-leader Yahya Jammeh has flown out of the country he ruled for 22 years and into exile, bringing an end to a protracted political crisis following presidential elections last month.

The longtime ruler refused to step down
...Hell no! The money's too good!...
after a December 1 vote in which opposition leader Adama Barrow was declared the winner, triggering weeks of tension as West African leaders threatened to use military force to oust him if he failed to step down.

Jammeh boarded a small, unmarked plane at an airport in the capital, Banjul, late on Saturday, alongside Guinea's President Alpha Conde after two days of negotiations over a departure deal.

He landed in Conakry, Guinea's capital, but set off again for Equatorial Guinea, where he will remain in exile, the president of the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS), Marcel Alain de Souza, told journalists

"No legislative measures" would be taken that would infringe the "dignity, security, safety and rights" of Jammeh or his family, ECOWAS said in a joint declaration with the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
and United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Jammeh could return to The Gambia when he pleased, the statement added, and property "lawfully" belonging to him would not be seized.

Europe
Donald Trump BATTERS Brussels with order to STOP EU Army plans or lose US Nato support
"PRESIDENT TRUMP will demand Brussels abandons plans for an EU Army if it wants the US is to continue its support for Nato. Senior British officers serving at the Pentagon have been briefed that one of the new administration’s top priorities will be to "sweep away" plans championed by Germany and France."

”We have been told quite clearly that, in an environment in which the political temperature in Eastern Europe is high and fiscal pressure on budgets is increasing, there can only be one joint force and that is Nato,” he said.

“Senior US officers directing future strategy want to see more delivery from European nations. There is grave concern about the intent and growing talk of an EU Army, which appears to draw resources away from the Alliance.”

Burden sharing by Europe is expected feature highly during Theresa May’s visit with Trump next month, though Britain is one of only five members meeting spending targets.

Despite comments by President Trump calling Nato “obsolete”, new US defence secretary Gen James Mattis affirmed America’s commitment to the Alliance – and reinforced concerns against Russia.

“We have a long list of times we’ve tried to engage positively with Russia. We have a relatively short list of successes in that regard,” he told Congress on Friday.

While European defence spending is the primary concern, insiders warned that Trump would also be gauging Europe’s “boots on the ground” commitments.

“President Trump is a numbers man. Defence spending is one thing, but when he meets with Nato chiefs in Brussels later this year, he will do the math: the US is deploying almost six [brigades] in Europe. How does this stack with Europe’s commitment? The US and Germany are playing their part but what about the rest?”, said another source close to the administration.

Last night Ian Brzezinski, resident senior fellow with the Washington DC-based Atlantic Council think tank, said: “Where the EU is most effective is in leveraging its $17 trillion economic weight and in fostering economic development and democratic reform.

“When it develops military command structures and other military capacities it is institutionalizing duplications that serve no benefit.

“Nato is unsurpassed when it comes to so-called putting lead on a target and interoperability. The power of Nato-EU collaboration is found in their complimentarity, not redundancy.

He added: “With the appointment of Gen Mattis, a big supporter of Nato, as defence secretary, and the current Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen Curtis Scaparrotti, President Trump has a hammer and anvil with which to accelerate Nato’s transformation. “

#1  "and fiscal pressure on budgets is increasing".

EU need to pay their share, Quit depending on USA to pay for everything.

I say lets withdraw to a reasonable degree and let the EU do their fair share.

#2  Glad to see Trump on the job and working hard. Looks like he is going to have to find a way of dealing with a media battle for the next 4 or 8 years. He will get no quarter from these little dogs nipping at his heels--these agitpropists of the left.

#3  That is why he utilizes Twitter - to bypass the media's word twisting.

And they so *hate* that! Keep it up!

#4  Come to think of it, why not revert to the old laws regarding ownership of news paper, radio and television stations.

Used to be the law would only let a corporation own one tv station, maybe one radio station and if only one of the two station is owned, a newspaper company. None of this media conglomerate BS that's going on now.

The statement further added that the operations were conducted in Kapisa, Uruzgan, Kandahar, Kunduz, and Helmand provinces.

Germany arrests 'accomplice' of Austrian terror suspect
[AlAhram] German police said Sunday they have jugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
a man accused of having ties to a suspected Islamic bully boy captured in Austria and thought to have been plotting an attack.

A front man for state police in North Rhine-Westphalia said the man, 21, was taken into custody on Saturday in the western city of Neuss on a warrant for "planning a serious crime targeting the state".

A front man for the Austrian interior ministry, Karl-Heinz Grundboeck, confirmed that the arrest "is linked" to that of a 17-year-old man -- not 18 as previously indicated -- in Vienna on Friday evening.

"Investigations are continuing," Grundboeck told AFP.

Both German and Austrian authorities declined to comment further but media reports in both countries said that the two had experimented with making explosives in the flat in Neuss.

German news magazine Focus had reported earlier, citing judicial sources, that the elite SEK command force had stormed the man's flat on suspicion he was planning a bombing targeting police and soldiers.

German police confiscated computers and mobile phones from the home, and the suspect's wife was temporarily detained for questioning, according to the reports.

They added that the Austrian suspect has told Sherlocks that he had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group and revealed the link to the alleged accomplice in Germany.

Austrian authorities said that the suspect, who turns 18 in the coming days, was transferred to the Justizanstalt Josefstadt prison in Vienna on Sunday afternoon.

Press reports named him as Lorenz K., born in Austria to parents of Albanian origin and who grew up in the small town of Neunkirchen south of Vienna.

The reports said that he possibly became radicalised while serving a year in prison from 2014-15 for assault.

Home Front: WoT
Refugee Flow From Somalia, Afghanistan Continues Into U.S.
[BREITBART] Despite President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s call to end any further refugee resettlement from foreign countries with widespread Islamic terrorism, the federal government continued its influx of refugees just days before the new president’s Inaugural ceremony.

In the final days of the Obama Administration, 23 refugees came through Slovakia’s Emergency Transit Centre from countries including Somalia, Afghanistan, Æthiopia, Iraq and Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
, all of which have struggled with terrorism, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Slovakia has been sending refugees into the U.S. since 2009, with now 978 refugees already resettled into the country.

But, the latest group of refugees could be some of the last to enter the country for a while. The Trump administration has promised to halt the refugee resettlement program, at least from countries where the majority of refugees currently migrate from.

Where the newest refugees have migrated to in the U.S. remains unknown, but regions like Knoxville, Tennessee, have seen their fair-share of refugees entering their neighborhoods at record pace, as Breitbart Texas reported.

Like the refugees coming to the U.S. from Slovakia, the majority of refugees entering Knoxville are from Iraq, a country that has been torn apart by Islamic terrorism. Other refugees in Knoxville are from similar third-world areas, like the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
and Somalia.

Somali gang rape video sparks call for justice, not fine of camels
More on this story from last week.
[REUTERS] NAIROBI - A group of teenage boys who posted a video online of themselves raping two girls must not be allowed to evade jail by paying for their crime in camels, campaigners said, in a case that has sparked outrage in the conservative Horn of Africa country.

In the attack last month, six teenage boys forced the girls, aged 14 and 16, into a car and drove them close to the Æthiopian border where they stripped and raped them, taking photographs and video, according to activists counseling the victims.

Authorities in the northern region of Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
have nabbed
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
five suspects over the attack and are tracking down the sixth.

"It's inhuman what those maidens have been through, the way they have been raped, tortured, stabbed," said Hawa Aden Mohammed, executive director of the Galkayo Center for Peace and Development (GECPD), which is helping the girls.

Rape is pervasive and often goes unpunished in much of Somalia, where decades of conflict have fueled a culture of violence and weakened institutions meant to uphold the law.

Traditionally, rape victims are forced to accept compensation - often in the form of camels or livestock - and marry their assailants in a centuries-old practice designed to end war between rival clans.

But graphic images of the gang-rape, shared on Facebook, have shocked Somalis, prompting an outpouring of sympathy for the victims and donations from hundreds of people for the 16-year-old and her family.

According to Somali Faces, a platform set up by Somalis in the diaspora, more than 9,000 pounds ($11,000) was raised in two days to help the girl, who has been forced to flee to a different city for fear of being ostracized by her community.

"SEVERE PUNISHMENT"

Faiza Jama Mohammed, head of the Nairobi office of the women's rights advocacy group Equality Now, said the attack highlighted the plight of thousands of Somali women.

"It has been happening silently to many women and girls," Mohammed told the Thomson Rooters Foundation by phone.

"Only now that it has escalated to the level of being shared through the internet, it became a big issue."

Women across Somalia are often reluctant to report rape for fear of being denounced as impure and immoral and rejected by their families.

Equality Now's Mohammed said a crowd of hostile men came to the hospital where the girls were being treated, demanding their release.

"The hospital was under siege," she said. "That gives a red flag in terms of how the community is normalizing this."

Clan elders initially proposed that the perpetrators' families pay each of the girls' families 100 camels in compensation - an offer they rejected, GECPD said.

"We have refused to allow traditional elders to intervene," Mohammed Ali Farrah, director of Puntland's justice ministry, told the Thomson Rooters Foundation.
