Daily Telegraph To Pay Melania Trump "Substantial" Damages For Article

#1  Following is a blockquote of it all:
Melania Trump – An Apology
Following last Saturday’s (Jan 19) Telegraph magazine cover story “The mystery of Melania”, we have been asked to make clear that the article contained a number of false statements which we accept should not have been published. Mrs Trump’s father was not a fearsome presence and did not control the family. Mrs Trump did not leave her Design and Architecture course at University relating to the completion of an exam, as alleged in the article, but rather because she wanted to pursue a successful career as a professional model. Mrs Trump was not struggling in her modelling career before she met Mr Trump, and she did not advance in her career due to the assistance of Mr Trump.

We accept that Mrs Trump was a successful professional model in her own right before she met her husband and obtained her own modelling work without his assistance. Mrs Trump met Mr Trump in 1998, not in 1996 as stated in the article. The article also wrongly claimed that Mrs Trump’s mother, father and sister relocated to New York in 2005 to live in buildings owned by Mr Trump. They did not. The claim that Mrs Trump cried on election night is also false.

We apologise unreservedly to The First Lady and her family for any embarrassment caused by our publication of these allegations. As a mark of our regret we have agreed to pay Mrs Trump substantial damages as well as her legal costs.

#1  Summary of some of the comments at the NYT: "It wasn't real socialism and besides it was Trump's fault." I continue to be impressed by the number of governments that walk, talk, and act like socialism/communism, but really aren't.
Posted by: Matt || 01/26/2019 15:02 Comments || Top||

#2  ..cause they also believe in the magic money tree?

Socialism calls for the centralization of power. When such power is amassed, there never can be any right man, woman, or people to carry it out. That's what America's Constitutional founders understood. It is why it dissipates power among the states and within the national government. That is why our Left hates the written Constitution and seeks all means to corrupt it.

#4  "Next time, We'll do it RIGHT™"

Heh, the old "it hasn't been done right" excuse. Given that no one has managed to do it at nation-state scale in a century, one starts to suspect there are some fundamental problems with the concept.

Hey, given that the whole idea was dreamed up by dead white men, why hasn't it been discredited by now?
Posted by: SteveS || 01/26/2019 18:38 Comments || Top||

#5  Everyone that says 'they'll do it right" should move to the next socialist nation and help it along. Give up their passports and go full in on making socialism a success. Until then they are just idiots gambling with others misery.

Japan's Supreme Court upholds transgender sterilization requirement
[NBC] Japan’s Supreme Court has upheld a law that effectively requires transgender people to be sterilized before they can have their gender changed on official documents.

The court said the law is constitutional because it was meant to reduce confusion in families and society. But it acknowledged that it restricts freedom and could become out of step with changing social values.

The 2004 law states that people wishing to register a gender change must have their original reproductive organs, including testes or ovaries, removed and have a body that "appears to have parts that resemble the genital organs" of the gender they want to register.

The unanimous decision by a four-judge panel, published Thursday, rejected an appeal by Takakito Usui, a transgender man who said forced sterilization violates the right to self-determination and is unconstitutional.

Usui, 45, had appealed to the top court after he unsuccessfully requested lower courts to grant him legal recognition as male without having his female reproductive glands surgically removed.

Despite the unanimous decision, presiding justice Mamoru Miura joined another justice in saying that while the law may not violate the constitution, "doubts are undeniably emerging," according to Usui’s lawyer, Tomoyasu Oyama.

The two judges proposed regular reviews of the law and appropriate measures "from the viewpoint of respect for personality and individuality," according to Japanese media reports.

U.S. considers putting Cuba on terror list over island's support of Venezuela's Maduro
[Miami Herald] The Trump administration is considering returning Cuba to the list of countries that sponsor terrorism if its government and military continue to support Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, a source with knowledge of the deliberations told el Nuevo Herald.

"What Cubans are doing in Venezuela is unacceptable," a senior administration official said. "And the United States is evaluating options to address that behavior."

The Obama administration removed Cuba from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism in 2015 ‐ one of the island government’s demands for agreeing to reestablish diplomatic relations. But the Trump administration has increasingly highlighted Cuba’s role in Venezuela and threatened Havana with increased sanctions.

The official said Cuban intelligence operatives in Venezuela have been a "fundamental" factor in the continued support of Maduro by senior Venezuelan armed forces officers.

Missouri Feral Hog Update: More than 9,300 hogs removed to date
[St. Louis Post-Dispatch] The Missouri Department of Conservation has tallied up feral hog elimination numbers from January through December 2018. The final number is 9,365 feral hogs removed from the state’s landscape by MDC, partner agencies, and private landowners. In 2017, 6,561 feral hogs were removed.

MDC and partners have implemented a new strategy to feral hog elimination, dividing the areas where feral hogs are present into elimination areas 1 through 6. Trapping is currently ongoing in each zone. Zone one, near the Harry S. Truman Reservoir and Stockton Lake, is benefiting from a significantly reduced population of feral hogs. The goal continues to be complete elimination of feral hogs from Missouri.

Mark McLain, MDC’s feral hog elimination team leader, said MDC is partnering with many agricultural and conservation groups, as well as hundreds of private landowners, that are all committed to eliminating feral hogs from Missouri. Landowners and the public are a crucial element of this effort, especially since most land in Missouri is privately owned.

"With one sounder of hogs capable of damaging 10-25 acres in a single night, feral hogs impact the productivity and profitability of Missouri farmers and ranchers," said Gary Marshall, chairman of agriculture coalition for Missouri Farmers Care. "The success of MDC and partners reducing hog numbers, especially around the Warsaw area, has provided relief to landowners. We look forward to continued collaboration leading to additional hog population reductions in 2019."

"He's Dead, Jim' - The Newseum To Close After Losing Lots Of Money
It's sure been a bad week for the news / journalism 'industry', so here's a cherry on top of the butterscotch sundae for y'all.
[Newsbusters] - Self-Indulgent Journalistic Shrine to Close After Hemorrhaging Money

After 11 years of hemorrhaging money, the Baltimore Sun on Friday announced that the Newseum, a 250,000 square foot temple dedicated to journalists by journalists, will close.

The Sun reported that the $500 million building will shut down at the end of 2019, finally ending the saga of a Washington D.C. museum that was always in debt and had five chief executives in the last nine years. In 2017, the Washington Post announced it was on "death watch" after a "stunning decline."

One thing that didn’t help the Newseum is the expensive ticket prices. It costs $21 for adults (down from a high of $25) and almost $13 for children. In a city of free museums, this isn’t exactly enticing.

Over the years, NewsBusters has reported on the problems with the self-indulgent shrine to journalism. In 2008, The MRC’s Kyle Drennen noted that "the exhibit on journalistic ethics took up less space in the seven floor building than the gift shop."

-Land of the Free
Illinois Lawmakers Introduce ‘Assault Weapon' Ban
[Bearing Arms] It’s shocking, I know, but Illinois doesn’t have an "assault weapon" ban.

While so many anti-gun states have them, it’s easy to forget that they’re not as universal. Mostly, it’s never happened because as much as Chicago dominates the state’s political landscape, guns are something the more rural parts are willing to fight over. Thus far, they have, and they’ve won.

But now it seems that the Democrats in the state are feeling froggy and think it’s time to go at it again.
A pair of Democratic lawmakers have sponsored a piece of legislation making it illegal to own several different firearms. And several southern Illinois lawmakers plan to fight the bill.

"Our second amendment rights are sacred to we as Americans, and here in southern Illinois we’re not going to tolerate it," State Rep. Terri Bryant, (R) Murphysboro, said.

Terri Bryant says Senate Bill 107 is just the latest attempt to ban legal guns. Democratic senators filed the bill Wednesday and it bars anyone from owning certain semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns. That includes AR 15’s.

It also allows gun owners to keep their weapons if they register them with Illinois State Police within 300 days of the bill passing, but any future sales of those guns would be prohibited.

Note that it doesn’t just focus on so-called "assault rifles," but also certain semi-automatic shotguns and pistols. In other words, Illinois Democrats are trying to be as sweeping as possible.

In the process, they’re seriously infringing on the Second Amendment.

Malaysia Airlines to drop word 'pork' from in-flight magazine after social media furore
[The Straits Times] KUALA LUMPUR - The word "pork" will now be dropped from the Malaysia Airlines in-flight magazine, in response to a recent social media furore where the national carrier was wrongly accused of publishing a picture of a pork dish.

Articles on restaurants in the Going Places magazine may instead use the words "non-halal" (forbidden in Islam), reported The Malay Mail, and not mention pork dishes available on the restaurants' menu.

The issue first came to the fore when a reader in the Muslim-majority country complained that the airline was being insensitive for carrying a picture of a pork dish in its feature on the Curious Kitchen restaurant in the January edition.

The article went viral on social media and sparked anger among Muslims who accused Malaysia Airlines of promoting pork.

The carrier apologised, but also clarified that the image complained about was actually of Wagyu beef slices and cuttlefish.

Gee, I Guess Now I'm Going To Have To Be Happy With Only 90% Of The Stuff I Wanted Trump To Do
...It wasn’t brilliant ‐ it was obvious. She was counting on you to set up as a do-or-die test for Trump over something where she and Chuck Schumer held a veto. So Trump can’t build a wall without their OK, and the emergency power thing is no panacea ‐ it will last about 30 seconds before some Obama judge enjoins it.

Rally at Montana Capitol supports public funding for private schools
[Independent Record] "Every student learns differently" was a statement echoed by many during Thursday's National School Choice Week rally at the Montana Capitol.

The rally, hosted by Americans for Prosperity and the Montana Family Foundation, was attended by about 70 people, including Elsie Arntzen, Montana's superintendent of public instruction.

Signs carried by some of those brave enough to face the cold at the Capitol read "Greater education comes from greater choice" and "Education opportunity for all!"

Proponent Jeff Laszloffy, president of the Montana Family Foundation, said school choice is important because "every child deserves the best."

"It’s the chance for every parent and student to find their best educational fit," Laszloffy said. "Whether that be public, private or home-school."

School choice advocates seek to make public funds available for private schools. This includes private, charter and home-school programs and is in addition to any tuition those schools might charge.

These public dollars could come in forms ranging from tuition tax credits to tax removals, school vouchers or other education services.

Those opposed to school choice often counter that public monies already provide a public school option to students and should not be used to fund private education.

[CNA] TYSONS, VIRGINIA: Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg took his case against President Donald Trump for a test run on Friday (Jan 25), as the possible 2020 presidential candidate told Democratic business leaders that his fellow New York billionaire was "flunking".

"I think it's clear this president at this point cannot be helped, and the training wheels that the staff tried to put on in the Oval Office have not worked," said Bloomberg, a 76-year-old media mogul who served three terms as New York mayor. "The president is just flunking every single test."

Bloomberg repeatedly hinted that he could mount a campaign for the Democratic nomination and join a large field hoping to challenge Trump in the November 2020 election.

The billionaire political activist and founder of a media company that bears his name would bring a famous brand and business background to the field of Democrats that is expected to grow to as many as two dozen.

"We’ve got to make sure we’ve got someone different in the White House and I’m committed to that," Bloomberg said. "Who here would hire Donald Trump to run their company? No. We’re his boss though. We’re the board of directors. And we should do what any board of directors would do in the private sector."

Mexico promises to take care of asylum seekers sent back by the United States
[LA Times] Mexican officials promised Friday to provide protection to asylum seekers who are sent back across the border from the United States under a new Trump administration policy, even though it could force the migrants to wait months or even years while their cases are considered by U.S. courts.

"The Mexican government does not agree with the unilateral measure implemented by the United States government," Roberto Velasco, a spokesman for Mexico's foreign ministry, said in a statement. "However ... we reiterate our commitment to migrants and human rights."

Velasco said the U.S. Embassy informed Mexican officials that 20 Central American asylum-seekers would be returned to Mexico on Friday afternoon at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the largest border crossing between San Diego and Tijuana.

At the border on Friday, no official return appeared to be underway. But other migrants who were waiting on the Mexican side for their chance to lodge asylum claims with U.S. officials said they were deeply worried about the new policy.

"It will be horrible," said a man from Cameroon who said he had been imprisoned and tortured by his government back home. He asked not to be named for fear of reprisals.

Why Canopy Growth Stock Popped 10% on Friday
[Motley Fool] What happened - Canadian cannabis grower Canopy Growth (TSX:WEED) (NYSE:CGC) saw its stock price spike to close 9.7% higher on Friday. You can thank investment bank Piper Jaffray for that.

This morning, Piper Jaffray -- which already had an overweight rating on the stock, as confirmed by financial news site TheFly.com -- raised its price target on those shares by a whopping 50%. Instead of $40, the price target at which Piper had previously pegged Canopy stock, the analyst now thinks the shares are worth $60.

So what - Why is Piper raising its target? The analyst explained that, in its view, the global market for marijuana has a potential for $250 billion to $500 billion in annual sales -- and could hit $15 billion to $50 billion in just the near term. (For comparison, Canopy Growth's own annual sales are just a hair over $70 million.)

So basically, Piper is saying there's a pretty huge market opportunity here for Canopy to grow into, and the company is well positioned to exploit it.

Now what - At least part of that growth now looks likely to happen in the U.S. as well. On Jan. 14, Canopy Growth secured a license to process hemp from the State of New York. It's a small entryway into the U.S. marijuana market, but as Piper Jaffray argues, it's a "tangible first step forward" and one that may pave the way to a long trajectory for U.S. growth.

The Grand Turk
Russia-Turkey summit proves Putin is kingmaker in Syria
[Ahval] If anyone expected much from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Moscow this week, they had reason to feel let down. Talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin did not yield anything of significance on the big issues between the two countries.

The Turkish president failed to win an express go-ahead from the Kremlin to set up a security zone in northeast Syria following President Donald Trump’s promised withdrawal of the 2,000 U.S. troops there. Nor was there an announcement about the fate of the rebel-held enclave of Idlib where the Hayat Tahrir as-Sham (HTS), a radical grouping once allied to al Qaeda, has gained ground.

What Putin and Erdogan chose to stress instead, during their joint press conference, was the burgeoning cooperation between Turkey and Russia in energy, trade and tourism. Yet even though ventures worth billions such as the TurkStream pipeline to carry gas from Russia across the Black Sea to Turkey, and the Akkuyu nuclear power plant being built by Russian firms in Turkey matter immensely, it is clear that Syria was at the centre of the talks.

Erdogan has not given up hope that Russia will ultimately approve a Turkish offensive into Syrian Kurdish-controlled lands east of the River Euphrates. He made the case for it in an op-ed published in the highbrow Moscow daily Kommersant, mirroring an earlier piece he wrote for the New York Times.

Russia is not necessarily against such a scenario, but Putin has made it clear that Turkish intervention should happen on Russia’s terms. At the joint press conference, the Russian president acknowledged that Ankara had legitimate security concerns. But then hastened to add that the 1998 agreement signed in Adana by Turkey and Syria charts the way forward.

Back then, the Syrian government agreed to outlaw the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as a terrorist organisation, close its camps, stop arming it and expel PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan from its territory. Yet what was once a Syrian concession under threat of all-out war made by Turkey now serves Putin as an argument demanding that Erdogan accept Syrian President Bashar Assad as a partner.

Russia’s stance that the Syrian government should take control over the northeast of the country remains firm. If Turkey wants to get rid of the Kurdish forces from Syria, it should coordinate with Damascus.

Home schooling is becoming popular in South Africa
[Bus Tech] Learners have all headed back to school in January, to begin the new academic year and to continue their educational journeys.

It’s an exciting and nerve-wracking time for many parents and learners, says Louise Schoonwinkel, GM of Impaq, a subsidiary of FutureLearn Group. But for some, it’s an even more strenuous period as many may not yet have a place in a school.

This is a reality that affects thousands of children owing to the significant demand on our country’s schooling system.

As an example, at the beginning of this month, Gauteng education officials said they had 24,000 learners that still needed to be placed in a school.

The Gauteng Education Department further said it had managed to place around 11,000 of these 24,000 learners in various public schools across the province, but that it was still working around the clock to ensure that the outstanding 13,000 learners would have a school to go to by the end of this month.

The department’s commitment to place all these children in schools is commendable. However, there are alternative education models in South Africa that can help alleviate high demand on our schooling system, thereby helping government focus more on providing education for all.

Michael Jackson's estate slams abuse documentary
PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ‐ The Latest on the documentary "Leaving Neverland" which includes detailed allegations by two men that Michael Jackson sexually molested them when they were boys.

Michael Jackson’s estate is blasting a documentary that tells the stories of two men who accuse Michael Jackson of sexually molesting them when they were young boys, calling the film "tabloid character assassination."

A statement released by Jackson’s estate late Friday calls the men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, "two perjurers" ‐ a reference to sworn statements the men gave when Jackson was alive that he had not abused them. The men leveled their abuse allegations after Jackson’s death.

The pair’s stories are the basis for "Leaving Neverland," a four-hour documentary that will air later this year on HBO and Channel 4 in Britain. It earned a somber standing ovation after its premiere at Sundance on Friday.

The estate accuses the film of focusing too much on Robson and Safechuck and ignoring others who spent significant time with Jackson and "stated that he treated children with respect and did nothing hurtful to them."

Brazil dam collapse leaves at least seven dead and 200 missing
[Telegraph] A dam that held back mining waste collapsed on Friday in Brazil, inundating a nearby community in reddish-brown sludge, killing at least seven people and leaving scores of others missing.

Parts of the city of Brumadinho were evacuated, and firefighters rescued people by helicopter and ground vehicles. Local television channel TV Record showed a helicopter hovering inches off the ground as it pulled people covered in mud out of the waste.

Photos showed rooftops poking above an extensive field of the mud, which also cut off roads. The flow of waste reached the nearby community of Vila Ferteco and an administrative office for Brazilian mining company Vale SA, where employees were present.

"'I've never seen anything like it," Josiele Rosa Silva Tomas, president of Brumadinho resident's association, told The Associated Press by phone. "It was horrible ... the amount of mud that took over."

Seven bodies had been recovered by late Friday, according to a statement from the governor's office of Minas Gerais state.

Kremlin-linked contractors help guard Venezuela's Maduro
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Private military contractors who do secret missions for Russia flew into Venezuela in the past few days to beef up security for President Nicolas Maduro in the face of U.S.-backed opposition protests, according to two people close to them.

A third source close to the Russian contractors also told Reuters there was a contingent of them in Venezuela, but could not say when they arrived or what their role was.

Russia, which has backed Maduro’s socialist government to the tune of billions of dollars, this week promised to stand by him after opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself president with Washington’s endorsement.

It was the latest international crisis to split the global superpowers, with the United States and Europe backing Guaido, and Russia and China urging non-interference.

Yevgeny Shabayev, leader of a local chapter of a paramilitary group of Cossacks with ties to Russian military contractors, said he had heard the number of Russian contractors in Venezuela may be about 400.

Study: Humans Love Dogs More than They Love Other Humans
[PJ] I have two children ‐ two human children, to be clear. The fact that I actually have to clarify what species my children are is annoying, nonsensical, and demonstrates how far down the rabbit hole of absurdity our society has plunged. If you doubt the need for my clarification, let me introduce you to a recent study that reveals that many humans love dogs more than they love other humans.

First, though, let me make it clear that dogs are not humans. Dogs are not even close to being humans, and treating them even remotely like a human is a self-contradictory action. Yet, as the Independent points out, "According to two studies, we’re more likely to empathise with struggling dogs than people in difficulty."

One of the studies began with the researchers circulating two solicitations for donations. Both solicitations asked, "Would you give £5 to save Harrison from a slow, painful death?" In one, Harrison was a human boy; in the other, a dog. Guess which Harrison received the most positive responses.

#1  Copied and pasted here for your convenience

On January 18, in the span of a few hours, Nick Sandmann’s peaceful attendance with his Covington Catholic classmates at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. was turned into a personal nightmare when Nick became the focus of false and defamatory accusations published and broadcast across the nation and the world. A mob comprised of activists, church and school officials, members of the mainstream print and broadcast media, and individuals on social media, including elected public officials and celebrities, rushed to condemn and vilify this young man by burying him in an avalanche of false accusations, false portrayals, and cyberbullying that have threatened his reputation and his physical safety. Nick Sandmann is 16 years old. He is an eleventh-grade high school student. He is not the face of evil and he did absolutely nothing wrong or inappropriate in connection with the incident to deserve the heinous accusations made against him by uninformed or agenda-driven individuals and media entities.

Nick and his family have experienced one of the worst sides of our present society. As their lawyers, we intend to exercise our best efforts as advocates to show Nick and his family another side of our society – that we are a society that survives and flourishes from the fact that it is based on the rule of law. A system of justice that demands that truth prevail and the wrongdoers be held accountable for the harm they have inflicted on Nick and his family.

In the coming weeks, we will be carefully reviewing all of the false accusations and threats made against Nick. We fully expect that a multitude of civil lawsuits will be filed and aggressively pursued. We recognize that justice for Nick will not be achieved quickly, but we are dedicated to achieving it for this young man regardless of time or expense.

At this time, Nick, his family and their lawyers will not be engaging in media interviews. There is work to be done. If any member of the public has information, they believe is helpful to Nick, that information can be communicated to us by email to supportnick@linwoodlaw.com.

Nick and his family sincerely appreciate the fair-minded individuals who respect our system of justice and refused to rush to judgment before the truth was revealed. Our efforts are not about politics, race or religion. Our efforts are only about justice for Nick.

Elizabeth Warren proposes 'wealth tax' on the very rich
[American Thinker] Senator Elizabeth Warren is proposing a "wealth tax" on Americans with more than $50 million in total assets. She is advocating for a 2% tax on those worth more than $50 million and 3% on those with a billion dollars or more in assets.

National Review:
"The Warren wealth tax is pretty big. We think it could have a significant effect on wealth concentration in the long run," Saez told the Post. "This is a very interesting development with deep root causes: The fact inequality has been increasing so much, particularly in wealth, and the feeling our current tax system doesn’t do a very good job taxing the very richest people."

The proposal seeks to address the tax evasion that fiscal conservatives argue would reduce the efficacy of any wealth tax by allocating additional resources to the IRS, imposing a one-time penalty on Americans who renounce their citizenship to avoid the tax, and requiring that a certain percentage of those affected by the tax undergo a yearly audit.
The proposal is supposed to raise $2.75 trillion over 10 years, or about 10% of the "Medicare for All" proposal Democrats have been floating. I will believe it when I see it. The grandiose "projections" for how much revenue these taxes on the super rich will raise are always spectacularly off. When France passed a wealth tax in 2012, they projected income from the measure to be 30 billion euros. They got 14 billion, which left a gaping hole in their budget.

Besides the dubious chances for success, it may be that such a tax would be unconstitutional:

This line has been on the form for a long, long time, and Elizabeth Warren has never opted to pay this higher rate on any filed tax return since she's been a resident of Mass. Until I see evidence that she has volunteered to pay extra taxes, she can go piss up a rope.

Europe
Europe 'coming apart before our eyes', say 30 top intellectuals
[Guardian] Liberal values in Europe face a challenge "not seen since the 1930s", leading intellectuals from 21 countries have said, as the UK lurches towards Brexit and nationalists look set to make sweeping gains in EU parliamentary elections.

The group of 30 writers, historians and Nobel laureates declared in a manifesto published in several newspapers, including the Guardian, that Europe as an idea was "coming apart before our eyes".

"We must now will Europe or perish beneath the waves of populism," the document reads. "We must rediscover political voluntarism or accept that resentment, hatred and their cortege of sad passions will surround and submerge us."

They write of their regret that Europe has been "abandoned from across the Channel" ‐ an oblique reference to the drawn-out Brexit process that has arguably brought Anglo-European relations to their lowest point since the second world war.

And they say that unless efforts are made to combat a rising tide of populism, the EU elections will be "the most calamitous that we have ever known: victory for the wreckers; disgrace for those who still believe in the legacy of Erasmus, Dante, Goethe, and Comenius; disdain for intelligence and culture; explosions of xenophobia and antisemitism; disaster".

"Abandoned from across the Channel and from across the Atlantic by the two great allies who in the previous century saved it twice from suicide; vulnerable to the increasingly overt manipulations of the master of the Kremlin, Europe as an idea, as will and representation, is coming apart before our eyes," the text reads.

Venezuela: Juan Guaidó urges fresh protests and bids for Russia and China backing
[Guardian] The leader of Venezuela’s newly energized opposition, Juan Guaidó, has summoned fresh street protests and reached out to China and Russia as he intensified his campaign to force Nicolás Maduro and his "arrogant" dictatorship from power.

In his first public appearance since declaring himself Venezuela’s interim president on Wednesday, the 35-year-old politician urged citizens to take to the streets and step up their battle against the man he dubbed "El Usurpador" (The Usurper).

A new round of demonstrations would be held next week, with the exact date and locations to be announced on Sunday, Guaidó said on Friday.

"In Miraflores [the presidential palace] they think this movement will deflate, that we will grow tired. But nobody here will tire, nobody will give in. Venezuela has awoken and it will never fall asleep again," Guaidó declared.

"Sí, se puede!" he crowd roared back. "Yes, we can!"

Texas Secretary Of State: As Many As 58,000 Non-Citizens Voted In Elections
[Star-Telegram] Texas election officials said Friday that tens of thousands of people whose U.S. citizenship could not be confirmed cast ballots in one or more election in the state during the past 22 years.

Texas Secretary of State David Whitley said a year-long evaluation found about 95,000 people described as "non-U.S. citizens" who are registered to vote in Texas. About 58,000 of them voted in Texas elections between 1996 and 2018, Whitley said.

"Integrity and efficiency of elections in Texas require accuracy of our state’s voter rolls, and my office is committed to using all available tools under the law to maintain an accurate list of registered voters," Whitley said.

These voters were found as state workers updated voter registration lists, comparing data with the Texas Department of Public Safety, to make sure those who cast ballots were eligible to do so, Whitley said.

New York's Until-Birth Abortion Law Is A Sign Of America's Decline
[The Federalist] This week the governor of New York signed into law a bill designed to expand a woman’s ability to have an abortion. Not only does it remove abortion from the criminal code, it allows for abortion up to 24 weeks’ gestation. After 24 weeks, an abortion may still be performed if the mother’s health, including her mental well-being, is deemed at risk. Non-doctors have also been given the legal ability to perform abortions.

The top of Freedom Tower‐a building built to show the world the strength and resolve of the American people in the aftermath of a terrible tragedy‐was lit up in pink to celebrate the signing. It celebrates a bill that promises to kill more humans than terrorists ever will.

Celebrate? Really? There should have been people crying and gnashing their teeth in the streets. Sackcloth and ashes should be the clothing of choice, not just among New Yorkers, but all Americans.

A few years ago I got a call from to a friend who had formerly lacked strong convictions about the abortion debate. He was flabbergasted. While driving in New York, an ad about abortion came on his radio. It compared women’s reproductive choices to choosing a hair or nail color. He was furious.

His words have never left me: "Whatever my opinion on abortion, the act is not comparable to getting a haircut. It is not a decision that should be made in haste. It is the ending of a life, or a potential life. To treat it casually and carelessly is a travesty."

What happened this week is a travesty. But New York Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins viewed it as a win for women. "Unfortunately for years, barriers to women’s rights were up...Today, we are tearing those barriers down."

Trump Questions Who Tipped Off CNN to Be at Stone Arrest
[Townhall] President Trump on Friday questioned who tipped off CNN to be at the pre-dawn arrest of his former adviser Roger Stone.

"Greatest Witch Hunt in the History of our Country! NO COLLUSION! Border Coyotes, Drug Dealers and Human Traffickers are treated better. Who alerted CNN to be there?" Trump tweeted referencing the indictment of Stone on charges related to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia collusion probe.

CNN cameras were set up at the house where Stone was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, capturing "exclusive" footage.

A producer for the network denied they were tipped off, instead attributing their presence to a "reporter’s instinct" and "unusual grand jury activity in Washington D.C." on Thursday.

Alan Dershowitz: Stone indictment follows concerning Mueller pattern
[The Hill] The indictment of former Trump associate Roger Stone follows a long pattern that should raise serious concerns about the special counsel investigation.

Like virtually all of these indictments, the indictment of Stone does not charge any substantive crimes relating to Russia that were committed before Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel. It charges crimes that grew out of the investigation itself and were allegedly committed after Mueller was appointed.

Recall that Mueller’s primary job was to uncover crimes that already occurred relating to Russian involvement in the 2016 election. He also was authorized to investigate and prosecute crimes growing out of the investigation, such as perjury and obstruction of justice, but this role was secondary to the primary one.

Well, it turns out that the secondary role has produced many more indictments of Americans than the primary one. A review of all the indictments and guilty pleas secured by Mueller shows that nearly all of them fall into three categories.

(1) Process crimes growing out of the investigation itself, such as false statements, perjury, obstruction of justice and witness tampering. These crimes resulted from the investigation itself. That doesn’t make them less serious, but it is relevant to evaluating the overall success or failure of Mueller’s primary mission.

(2) Crimes that occurred before Mueller was appointed but that cover unrelated business activities by individuals associated with President Trump. The object of these indictments is to pressure the defendants to provide evidence against the resident.

(3) One indictment against Russian individuals who will never be brought to justice in the United States. This indictment was largely for show.

Mueller’s tactic, as described by U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis, III, is to find crimes committed by associates of President Trump and to indict them in order to put pressure on them to cooperate. This is what Judge Ellis said about the earlier indictment of former Trump presidential campaign chairman Paul Manafort: "You don’t really care about Mr. Manafort’s bank fraud ‐ what you really care about is what information Mr. Manafort could give you that would reflect on Mr. Trump or lead to his prosecution or impeachment."

Judge Ellis also pointed out the dangers of this tactic: "This vernacular to ’sing’ is what prosecutors use. What you got to be careful of is that they may not only sing, they may compose." This is all too common a tactic widely employed by prosecutors, particularly in organized crime and other hierarchical cases. But the fact that it is common does not make it right. Civil libertarians have long expressed concern about the tactic of indicting someone for the primary purpose of getting them to cooperate against the real target.

I have been writing about this for decades. In fact, I coined the term "compose" that Judge Ellis cited. But most fair-weather civil libertarians have remained silent with regard to Mueller because his target is President Trump, who they despise. The American Civil Liberties Union, which is flush with cash since Trump became president, has expressed little criticism of Mueller’s anti-civil liberties tactics.

It seems clear that the manner by which Roger Stone was arrested ‐ an early-morning raid on his home, observed by media ‐ was intended to put pressure on him to cooperate. Ordinarily, a white-collar defendant is allowed to self-surrender to authorities, unless there is fear of escape, which does not appear to be the case here, as evidenced by his low bail. Whether Stone "sings" or "composes" remains to be seen.

He has said he would never cooperate, but attorney Michael Cohen said he would take a bullet for President Trump ‐ before he turned against him in an effort to get a reduced sentence. Prosecutors have many weapons at their disposal to get reluctant witnesses to cooperate, such as threatening to indict family members as in the Michael Flynn case. Civil libertarians should be concerned about the tactics being used by Mueller to get witnesses to sing. All Americans should be concerned about the ends-justify-the-means approach taken by the special prosecutor.

If, in the end, Mueller comes up relatively empty on substantive crimes relating to Russia that were committed before he was appointed, and can point only to the three categories of alleged crimes described above, it will be difficult to declare his investigation a success, or his appointment justified by the results.

Based on what we have seen thus far, it would have been far better if a nonpartisan commission of experts, like the 9/11 Commission, had been appointed to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 election and to make recommendations about how to prevent Russia from trying to influence future American elections.

Democrats Ducking Vote on Rejecting Anti-Semitism
[Free Beacon] Democratic leaders are remaining quiet about a new congressional measure that rejects anti-Semitism and chides a new class of Democratic congressional members for the open embrace of notorious anti-Semites and anti-Israel causes, according to the leading Republican author of that new measure.

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R., N.Y.), one of just two Jewish Republicans in Congress, has introduced a new congressional resolution in the House that categorically rejects anti-Semitism in all its forms and calls out some newly elected Democratic members who have ridden a popular wave into Congress on the backs of anti-Semitic leaders and causes, Zeldin told the Washington Free Beacon in a wide-ranging interview.

While a similar House resolution condemning white supremacy sailed to a nearly unanimous vote several weeks ago, Zeldin's amendment, focused directly on anti-Semitism, has put Democratic leaders in a precarious position as they are forced to reject the views of popular new freshman colleagues.

"It's up to the Democrats to decide whether or not they are actually going to confront this head on," Zeldin told the Free Beacon. "I'm wiling to work with any Democratic colleague on any idea he or she has to crush anti-Semitism in any form. But I can't do that for them."

To that end, Zeldin's measure‐which is expected to be brought for a vote in the coming weeks‐is shaping up to be a sort of litmus test for the Democratic leadership as it figures out how to deal with a class of freshmen who are open about their distaste for Israel and support causes like the Boycott, Sanction, and Divestment movement, or BDS, which wages economic warfare on the Jewish state.

Using suicide kabooms to crack the Syrian Democratic Forces’ lines near Baghouz Fouqani, the Islamic State allegedly captured the town after heavy fighting last night.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
it should be noted that the Syrian Democratic Forces have denied losing the town to the terrorist group.

The Islamic State often uses these desperate suicide tactics when they are besieged and short on provisions (e.g. al-Safa battle).

ISIS is trying to regain the towns they lost to the Syrian Democratic Forces around Murshida; however, it appears that their momentum from last night has run out, thanks in large part to the U.S. Coalition warplanes that have been hammering their last positions in the Euphrates River Valley.

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. (ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) jacket wallahs allegedly surrendered themselves to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in eastern Syria this evening, the Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported.

"A group of IS mercenaries among them a number of the elements of ’the immersed’ gave themselves up to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in al-Baguz axis in Deir ez-Zor, while SDF fighters are engaged into strong festivities amid achieving more progress," the ANHA said.

The ANHA report added that most of the Islamic State members that surrendered themselves this evening were foreign nationals.

ISIS is currently besieged by the Syrian Democratic Forces inside a small pocket located in the eastern region of the Euphrates River Valley; they have yet to surrender the last town under their control.

Israel sends ‘strongly-worded’ messages to Lebanon over Hezbollah missiles
[PRESSTV] Israel has reportedly sent strongly-worded messages to Leb, delivered through La Belle France, warning the Arab country of the consequences of the precision missiles possessed by the Hezbollah resistance movement.

According to Israeli media, the issue was discussed at length during a Wednesday meeting between the regime’s President Reuven Rivlin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in Gay Paree.

The talks, also attended by Israeli air force commander Amikam Norkin, were held ahead of Macron’s planned visit to Beirut.

In a move coordinated with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Rivlin has reportedly stressed Tel Aviv’s concern over Hezbollah’s "large rocket and missile arsenal", and what Israel calls "efforts made by Iran and Hezbollah to improve the precision of the missiles the Lebanese organization holds."

He has also expressed the regime’s worry about the tunnels Israel says Hezbollah has dug near the occupied territories.

Venezuela crisis: Guaidó rejects talks with Maduro
[BBC] Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó has rejected an offer of talks from President Nicolás Maduro amid an ongoing power struggle between the two.

Mr Guaidó declared himself "acting president" on Wednesday, a position that has been recognised by several countries, including the US.

But Mr Maduro called the move a "coup" influenced by the US and cut off diplomatic ties in response.

A UN Security Council meeting on the crisis is due to be held on Saturday,

Meanwhile,
...back at the abandoned silver mine, the water was up to Jack's neck and still rising. And then he smelled the smoke...
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has appointed a veteran former diplomat as his envoy to deal with the crisis in Venezuela.

He said Elliott Abrams would be responsible for all US efforts to restore democracy in Venezuela.

Mr Abrams is a prominent neo-conservative who has long argued for an activist foreign policy to spread American values around the world.

He served as US Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs in the 1980s under President Ronald Reagan.

Texas man captured in Syria charged with aiding ISIS
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A 34-year-old Texas man who was captured in Syria and brought to the United States has been charged with providing support to ISIS.

Warren Christopher Clark, 34, of Sugar Land, Texas, appeared before a federal court judge in Houston on Friday, the Department of Justice said.

It said Clark was charged in an indictment unsealed on Friday with providing material support to ISIS -- which the United States has designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

The Justice Department said Clark was captured in Syria by members of the Syrian Democratic Forces, an anti-ISIS alliance of Kurds and Arabs, and transferred to US custody this week.

"The arm of American Justice has a lengthy reach," US Attorney Ryan Patrick said in a statement.

"The FBI continues to aggressively pursue individuals who attempt to join the ranks of ISIS imported muscle or try to provide support for other terrorist organizations," FBI special agent Perrye Turner said.

If convicted, Clark, a former substitute school teacher, could face 20 years in prison.

Clark, in an interview with NBC News before his transfer to the United States, said he went to Syria to become an English teacher for ISIS and was never a fighter.

"I wanted to go see exactly what the group was about, and what they were doing," said Clark, also known as Abu Muhammad al-Ameriki.

EU adds Saudi Arabia to draft terrorism financing list
[Aljazeera] Kingdom was determined to have fallen short in combating money laundering and terror financing, Reuters reports.

The European Commission has added Saudi Arabia to an EU draft list of countries that pose a threat to the bloc because of lax controls against "terrorism financing" and "money laundering", sources told Reuters news agency.

The move comes amid heightened international pressure on Saudi Arabia following the brutal murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The EU's list currently consists of 16 countries, including Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and North Korea, and is mostly based on criteria used by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global body composed by wealthy nations meant to combat money laundering and terrorism financing.

But the list has been updated this week, using new criteria developed by the EU Commission since 2017. Saudi Arabia is one of the countries added to the updated list that is still confidential, one unidentified EU source and one unnamed Saudi source were quoted as saying.

Delta Airlines Answers the In-Flight Air Filtration Question
[The Drive] Everybody farts. It's one of those comforting truisms in life‐until you're crowded into an enclosed space with 300 other people, forced to breathe in some choice flatus. A Delta Airlines frequent flier recently raised that very concern to the company on Twitter, and surprise of surprises, whoever runs the account took it seriously enough to provide the answer we've all been waiting to hear. Short answer: Yes, there is a fart filter. Sort of.

The flatological story started off when a Twitter user named DJ Rankan posted a frightening statistic claiming passengers expel around 368 liters (that's about 13 cubic feet) of gas during the average flight and pleading with Delta to say there's some sort of fart filter on board. That number is in fact a little bloated‐it comes from this non-scientific study by The Sun last year, and it's their guess at how much gas the 525 passengers on a fully-loaded Airbus A380 would pass in total during a 13-hour flight. Still, the visual of 13 cubic feet of pure fart is an arresting one.

Trump, Congress agree to end longest government shutdown
WASHINGTON (AP) ‐ Submitting to mounting pressure and growing disruption, President Donald Trump agreed to a deal Friday to reopen the government for three weeks, backing down from his demand that Congress give him money for his border wall before federal agencies get back to work.

Standing alone in the Rose Garden, Trump said he would sign legislation funding shuttered agencies until Feb. 15 and try again to persuade lawmakers to finance his long-sought wall. The deal he reached with congressional leaders contains no new money for the wall.

Trump’s retreat came in the 35th day of the partial shutdown as intensifying delays at the nation’s airports and a missed payday for hundreds of thousands of federal workers brought new urgency to efforts to resolve the standoff.

The shutdown was ending as Democratic leaders had insisted it must ‐ reopen the government first, then talk border security. "The president thought he could crack Democrats and he didn’t and I hope it’s a lesson for him," said the Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said of her members: "Our unity is our power. And that is what maybe the president underestimated."

Trump still made the case for a border wall and maintained he might again shut down the government over it. Whatever negotiations restart next, Trump enters them from a weakened position. Recent polls found Trump bore the blame for the shutdown.

"If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on Feb. 15, again, or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and Constitution of the United States to address this emergency," Trump said. He has been considering declaring a national emergency in order to fund the border wall unilaterally, a move that would almost certainly face legal hurdles.

He said a bipartisan committee of lawmakers would be formed to consider border spending before the new deadline.

"They are willing to put partisanship aside, I think, and put the security of the American people first," Trump said. He asserted that "barrier or walls will be an important part of the solution."

Congress was expected to vote on the plan swiftly.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate will pass legislation on Friday and he hopes there will be "good-faith negotiations over the next three weeks to try to resolve our differences" on border security.

Schumer said Democrats oppose the wall money but agree on other ways to secure the border "and that bodes well for coming to an eventual agreement." The House also was expected to vote Friday to approve the deal.

Within the White House there was broad recognition among Trump’s aides Friday that the shutdown pressure was growing and they couldn’t keep the standoff going indefinitely. The president’s approval numbers had suffered during the impasse, and Republicans were openly calling on him to back down from his demands and reopen the government.

‘SOS’ call from Chinese embassy in Islamabad keeps law enforcers on their toes

once in the embassy located in Diplomatic Enclave, the law enforcement agencies were informed that the alarm had been sent out only to check the response time and preparedness of the departments.

A senior police officer, who requested anonymity, was of the view that the embassy cannot check the response time and preparedness of the law enforcement agencies or send out such an alarm.

"Panic buttons are installed in embassies to seek help in a disaster or emergency situation, not to check our preparations or performance," the officer maintained.

Besides, he added, there was no need for checking the preparedness of the law enforcement agencies and the rescue department since a mock exercise had already been conducted in the Chinese embassy last month.

Trump announces deal with lawmakers to end government shutdown
[ARABNEWS] President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
said on Friday he has reached a tentative agreement with US politicians for three weeks in stop-gap funding that would end a partial US government shutdown now in its 35th day, with a senior Democratic aide saying money the president demanded for a border wall is not included.
Not paying the Coast Guard woulda been the kicker there. As soon as I read about it, I saw this coming.
The president had previously insisted on the inclusion of $5.7 billion to help pay for a wall along the vast US-Mexico border in any legislation to fund government agencies.

"I am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government," Trump said in remarks in the White House Rose Garden.

"In a short while, I will sign a bill to open our government for three weeks until Feb. 15. I will make sure that all employees receive their back pay very quickly, or as soon as possible," Trump said.

Federal Employees were about to loose a third paycheck, 6 Senators had defected, you need to blame the Senate as well. Trump knew he had to withdraw, regroup and fight again. Beating these hardass people in the first fight to secure our borders will take a few battles, almost no wars have been won in one battle. Turkey ‘will go it alone’ with Syria security zone
[ARABNEWS] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
may establish its own 32km security zone in northern Syria to keep Kurdish militias away from its border, President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
said on Friday.

The threat by Ankara to "go it alone" with a buffer zone follows silence from Washington on US involvement in the plan.

President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
proposed the border zone, but has not specified who would create, enforce or pay for it, or where exactly it would be.

"We expect the promise of a security zone, a buffer zone aimed at protecting our country from terrorists, to be fulfilled in few months," Erdogan said on Friday. "Otherwise we will establish it ourselves.

"Our only expectation from our allies is that they provide logistical support to Turkey's effort. Our patience has a limit. We will not wait for ever for the fulfilment of the promises given to us."

Turkish opposition urges Erdogan to cooperate with Syrian gov’t
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Republican People’s Party (CHP) called on Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
to cooperate with the Syrian government on fulfilling the 1998 Adana Agreement.

According to a statement from the CHP Deputy Chairman, Unal Cevikoz, Erdogan should cooperate with Syria in order to combat terrorism, as this was a major stipulation in Adana Agreement.

Ceviköz added that working with Syria to fight terrorism is a necessity based on the principle of reciprocity.

As part of the Adana Agreement, Syria is not allowed to harbor any terrorist groups, in particular, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Syria is also not allowed to provide any weapons or financial support to the PKK; they must cooperate with the Ottoman Turkish government in the fight against any PKK elements.

Maduro Denied in Bid to Pull $1.2 Billion in Gold From Bank of England
[BLOOMBERG] Nicolas Maduro
Venezuela's attempt at producing a Muammar Qadaffy...
’s embattled Venezuelan regime, desperate to hold onto the dwindling cash pile it has abroad, was stymied in its bid to pull $1.2 billion worth of gold out of the Bank of England, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Bank of England’s decision to deny Maduro officials’ withdrawal request comes after top U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton, lobbied their U.K. counterparts to help cut off the regime from its overseas assets, according to one of the people, who asked not to be identified.

The U.K. followed the U.S. and other countries on Wednesday in recognizing Juan Guaido, the National Assembly leader, as the legitimate president of Venezuela. Maduro, an authoritarian ruler who’s overseen the country’s collapse into economic chaos, refuses to give up power, though, and has the backing of the military.

The U.S. officials are now trying to steer Venezuela’s overseas assets to Guaido to help bolster his chances of effectively taking control of the government. The $1.2 billion of gold is a big chunk of the $8 billion in foreign reserves held by the Venezuelan central bank. The whereabouts of the rest of them is largely unknown. The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, though, has emerged recently as a destination for freshly mined Venezuelan gold. The U.S. is leading an international effort to persuade Turkey -- which is a key Maduro backer, along with Russia and China -- to stop being a conduit for these gold shipments.

Europe
European intellectuals warn of "wreckers" out to destroy fuzzy puppies, bunnies
**Wreckers**? What the HELL? Haven't heard that word in forever. That's right out of the Soviet playbook.
"Enough of ’building Europe’!" is the cry. Let’s reconnect instead with our "national soul"! Let’s rediscover our "lost identity"! This is the agenda shared by the populist forces washing over the continent. Never mind that abstractions such as "soul" and "identity" often exist only in the imagination of demagogues.
You heard it here folks: they think people don't have soul or identiy.
Europe is being attacked by false prophets who are drunk on resentment, and delirious at their opportunity to seize the limelight. It has been abandoned by the two great allies who in the previous century twice saved it from suicide; one across the Channel and the other across the Atlantic. The continent is vulnerable to the increasingly brazen meddling by the occupant of the Kremlin. Europe as an idea is falling apart before our eyes.
I bet you the writer as well as most of the people who read the article have attended more than one "FUCK YOU USA" protest. Now suddenly they want to come crying back for help. What kind of help do they want from the Americans, anyhow? I thought AmerKKKans were fascist bullies who need to keep the fuck out of Europe?
We count ourselves among the European patriots (a group more numerous than is commonly thought, but that is often too quiet and too resigned), who understand what is at stake here. Three-quarters of a century after the defeat of fascism and 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall there is a new battle for civilisation.
Once again, I can't help notice the hypocrisy of those who harshly condemned patriotism suddenly worshiping patriotism. According to them, how does where you were born have any influence? Patriotism is for idiots.
Hence this exhortation to carry once more the torch of a Europe that, despite its mistakes, its lapses, and its occasional acts of cowardice, remains a beacon for every free man and woman on the planet.
This could have been written by any American and been condemned as racist, jingoist claptrap that only a total moron could believe in. BUT, since we are evidently in Bizarro World, it's OK when they do it.

It's just astounding that so many highly educated intellectuals have zero self-awareness and freely use the tools of the enemies they spent decades hating.

47 migrants stranded off Sicily as Italy refuses entry
[ARABNEWS] Italia pressured the Netherlands on Friday to accept 47 migrants colonists, including eight unaccompanied minors, who have spent seven days at sea aboard a humanitarian rescue ship that has been allowed to enter Italian territorial waters due to bad weather conditions.

The German aid group Sea-Watch tweeted that it has received no response to multiple requests for the Dutch-flagged Sea Watch-3 vessel carrying people rescued off Libya on Saturday to access a port. The boat was permitted to enter Italian waters Friday because of deteriorating weather conditions, and the Italian coasties said it was just off Syracuse, Sicily, flanked by coasties and financial police boats.

Italia and Malta, the closest EU nations, have both refused to allow entry to rescue vessels operated by humanitarian groups in what they say is a bid to discourage smuggler boats from departing Libya by diminishing the prospect of rescue.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini told news hounds in Rome that he sent a letter to the government in the Netherlands officially requesting that they organize landings for the migrants colonists "aboard this vessel that waves a Dutch flag."

Dutch Migration Minister Mark Harbers said that without the prospect of such a comprehensive solution to how to process migrants colonists rescued at sea that the Netherlands "will not take part in ad-hoc measures." He added that the ship flying the Dutch flag doesn’t oblige the Netherlands to take action.

Sukkur police official kills fiancée, uncle 'over honour'
[DAWN] A Sindh police official in Sukkur rubbed out his paternal uncle and fiancée on Friday and later confessed to killing the two allegedly over honour, DawnNewsTV reported.

The incident took place near Launch Mor area on Sukkur city's Miani Road where the suspect stormed into his uncle's flat and opened indiscriminate fire, killing his 65-year-old uncle and his daughter on the spot.

Upon receiving word of the incident, the police arrived at the flat and shifted the bodies to Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. After completing all medico-legal formalities, the bodies were handed over to the dear departed's relatives.

Sukkur SSP Irfan Samoon later met the relatives of the victims and sought information from them. The victim's heirs were reluctant to give a statement to DawnNewsTV as the suspect and victims all belonged to the same family.

Later in the day, the police placed in durance vile

the suspect officer along with the murder weapon ‐ a state-issued G3 rifle. The SSP confirmed the arrest, and the recovery of the murder weapon, saying an investigation will be conducted according to the law.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Standing Buffalo drew a bead on his old enemy and squeezed the trigger...
the suspect confessed to killing his uncle and cousin. While speaking to DawnNewsTV, the suspect said his marriage had been arranged with his uncle's daughter but he had doubts over her "character".

The arrested official said he warned her to "not engage in adultery" and even spoke to his uncle about the matter but the uncle "did not disapprove of such behaviour".

The woman was a divorcee and this would have been her second marriage.

When questioned by coppers to describe fully the account of the murder, the police officer said: "I was in an emotional state. She was cooking in the kitchen when I went over to shoot her and my uncle was on the prayer mat, preparing to offer his prayers."

The officer, whose confession was recorded on video, goes on to say: "No one else was around except for her 12-year-old son who heard the firing and bravely ran away."

He then admitted to using the G3 rifle issued to him for duty and said he was in uniform at the time of the incident and had acted alone.

Tunis museum attack trial reopens with video feed to Paris
[PULSE.NG] The trial reopened Friday of suspects in the deadly jihadist attack on the Tunisian capital's Bardo museum in 2015, with the hearing relayed by video to Gay Paree for French victims' families.

Several of the suspects in the attack that left 22 dead testified as the trial started in earnest, after five previous sessions over the last 18 months that had been taken up by procedural issues.

Among the 19 defendants who appeared in court were friends of suspected criminal mastermind Chamseddine Sandi, including his brother Achraf Sandi.

A security guard and 21 foreign tourists, including four Frenchies, four Italians, three Japanese and two Spaniards, were bumped off in the March 18, 2015 attack by two assailants armed with Kalashnikov rifles.

Dozens of others were maimed in the assault on the North African country's main museum, while the two button men were rubbed out. It was one of several attacks in Tunisia that have been claimed by the Islamic State

group.

The first suspect questioned in court, Mahmoud Kechouri, a 33-year-old labourer from a working-class district of Tunis, said he had helped with planning for the attack, including readying mobile phones for Chamseddine Sandi, a neighbour and longtime friend.

Kechouri said he had adopted Sunni turban ideology a decade ago but had not joined comrades who travelled to neighbouring Libya for training because he was the family breadwinner.

Trump is right: Ballistic missiles are a threat
[ARABNEWS] The proliferation of ballistic missiles around the world is a real threat, not only to the US but to many of its allies. This is why US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s latest speech on the subject, and his administration’s recently published Missile Defense Review, are so timely.

During his speech at the Pentagon last week, Trump laid out his vision clearly, saying: "Our goal is simple, to ensure that we can detect and destroy any missile launched against the United States anywhere, anytime, anyplace." While some might dismiss this as the usual Trumpian rhetoric, he is right to focus on improving America’s missile defense capability.

A strong and robust missile defense system serves as an important component of America’s national security architecture. A capable missile defense system gives policymakers more time to make decisions during a crisis, and offers the US a greater ability to deter attacks. If an attack does occur, a missile defense system can protect vital infrastructure and population centers.

, already known as the world’s top importer of foreign-made ballistic missiles, has started building its first missile production factory near the central town of al-Watah, The Washington Post has quoted experts as saying.

In a Wednesday report, The Post quoted leading experts as saying that satellite imagery dating back to November appears to show Saudi Arabia's debut ballistic missile factory located at an existing missile base near al-Watah.

This would reportedly be the first known instance of Saudis manufacturing the weapons indigenously, after importing foreign-made ballistic missiles for years.

The photos were discovered by Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear weapons expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey and founder of the Arms Control Wonk blog, and his team.

Top Kurdish commander: Syria anti-Daesh forces must keep ‘special status’
[ARABNEWS] Any deal between Syria’s Kurds and Damascus should respect the "special status" of Kurdish-led forces who fought the ISIS group, a top Kurdish commander of those forces said.

"Any political agreement should include the special status" of the Syrian Democratic Forces after they fought ISIS "on behalf of all humanity and even the Syrian army," SDF commander-in-chief Mazloum Kobani said.

"This is our red line and we will not concede this" in ongoing talks with the Damascus regime, he said in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

The SDF control around a third of Syria after expelling gunnies from a large northeastern swathe of the war-torn country with backing from the US-led coalition.

The Kurdish-led alliance "protected northeastern Syria ... liberated these areas, and have the right to continue protecting the region," said Kobani, who was speaking near the northeastern city of Hasakah.

Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
’s government has gained ground against rebels and gunnies with key Russian backing since 2015, and now controls almost two-thirds of the country.

It is determined to reassert its authority over SDF-held areas, which make up the lion’s share of the rest.

But after years of marginalization, the Kurds are determined to keep some of the autonomy they gained during the eight-year war.

The SDF could "agree to be part of the national army of a future Syria, but only on the condition they keep their special status," Kobani said.

Damascus has rejected self-rule in northeastern Syria, but Kurdish leaders started talks with the government in July in a bid to seek some form of decentralization.

BuzzFeed has started its layoffs, but it's also talking about a merger
BuzzFeed began laying off 15 percent of its staff ‐ about 200 employees ‐ on Friday. Its next move could be a merger with Group Nine, another big digital publisher.

Speculation about a tie-up between the two companies has been bubbling in the media industry for months, and sources familiar with both companies say the two have indeed been discussing a merger. The two companies aren’t close to a finalized deal and may ultimately find different partners. If there is a merger, sources say, it won’t happen imminently.

A BuzzFeed rep declined to comment; I’ve asked Group Nine for comment.

There is some logic to a deal, as both BuzzFeed and Group Nine specialize in generating relatively low-cost, high-volume video designed to travel around the internet with the help of platforms like Facebook and Google. Last fall, BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti publicly floated the idea of merging big digital publishers together so they can get better terms from Facebook and other distributors.

BuzzFeed and Group Nine also share a link via digital investor Ken Lerer. Lerer, who along with Peretti was a co-founder of HuffPost, is the chairman of BuzzFeed’s board; his son Ben Lerer runs Group Nine. Group Nine was created in 2016, when cable TV giant Discovery contributed cash and some assets to a joint venture with three companies with ties to the Lerer family: Thrillist, a lifestyle publisher aimed at young men; the Dodo, a site dedicated to animals and people who love them; and NowThis, a video news publisher.

Any deal would require the companies’ array of backers to reach an agreement on valuation. Most intriguingly, it would require Discovery, which owns the largest stake in Group Nine, to sync with rival TV giant Comcast*, which has put $400 million into BuzzFeed and is the publisher’s biggest backer.

Last fall, Discovery told investors it values its 42 percent in Group Nine at $212 million, which implies a $500 million valuation for the whole company. In 2016, BuzzFeed raised $200 million from NBC Universal at a valuation of $1.7 billion. It’s quite possible that number would drop in today’s market, after a couple years where other digital publishers have folded, sold at fire sale prices, or seen their valuations slashed.

Both Peretti and Ben Lerer built businesses that were supposed to thrive in the social media world, in particular with the help of Facebook. But while Facebook spent several years courting media companies, it’s now clear that Facebook (along with Google) will continue to dominate the internet advertising market and won’t be sharing that wealth with publishers. (Its new pitch to publishers: We’ll help you sell subscriptions, which is a business we’re not in.)

In response, Peretti has been trying to find new revenue streams, and now he’s cutting costs. Once that’s done, he may try to bulk up.

Sudan opposition head backs protesters' call for Bashir to go
[PULSE.NG] Sudan's main opposition leader Sadiq al-Mahdi on Friday called for President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
to step down, throwing his support behind anti-government demonstrators after weeks of deadly protest.

Demonstrations have rocked the east African country since December 19, prompted by a government decision to triple the price of bread.

Since then 30 people have died in protest-related violence, according to officials, while rights group put the corpse count at more than 40.

"This regime has to go immediately," Mahdi told hundreds of worshippers at a mosque in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital Khartoum, which has seen near daily anti-government protests.

Echoing protesters' call for Bashir to resign, Mahdi gave an even higher corpse count for the demonstrations.

"More than 50 people have been killed since December," said Mahdi, a fixture of Sudanese politics since the 1960s whose government was toppled by Bashir in a 1989 coup.

After nearly a year in exile, Mahdi returned to Sudan last month on the same day protests began.

On Friday, he backed the Sudanese Professionals' Association (SPA), an umbrella group of doctors, teachers and engineers which is leading demonstrations.

"A period of transition will come soon... we are supporting this (protest) movement," said Mahdi, adding his party had signed a document with the association.

"This is a document for change and freedom," he said.

While Mahdi's Umma Party has served as Sudan's main opposition group, regularly campaigning against government policies, analysts say the SPA has emerged as the biggest challenge yet to Bashir's rule.

"Together we will hold peaceful demonstrations in Sudan and outside of Sudan," Mahdi said, condemning the use of "live ammunition" against protesters.

Fifth Column
Newt Gingrich: What Does Trump Have in Common with Abe Lincoln?
[FoxNews] I told President Trump recently that no president since Abraham Lincoln has faced the kind of unending bias and hostility from the media that he is living through.
Hey! Wasn't Abe a Republican?
Upon Lincoln’s election, the Memphis Daily Appeal wrote on November 13, 1860:

"Within 90 days from the time Lincoln is inaugurated, the Republican Party will be utterly ruined and destroyed. His path is environed with so many difficulties, that even if he had the ability of Jefferson and the energy of Jackson, he would fail, but he is a weak and inexperienced man, and his administration will be doomed from the commencement.

Just as President Trump rails against "fake news," President Lincoln felt that a significant front in his war to preserve the Union was against the news media. This made Lincoln highly critical and skeptical of the media.

According a reporter who had regular access to the president, Lincoln often said "the worst feature about newspapers was that they were so sure to be 'ahead of the hounds,' outrunning events, and exciting expectations which were sure to be disappointed."

Lincoln, who was embroiled in a Civil War in which the very survival of the country was at stake, was also much tougher and more aggressive with the media than anyone could imagine in the modern era. This included shutting down newspapers and imprisoning journalists who supported secession from the Union.
Be still, my heart!
You decide whether attacks on President Trump's hair or attacks on Lincoln's intelligence are more demeaning.

President Lincoln was a very different man facing a radically more dangerous situation than President Trump. Yet each president represents a direct threat to a national establishment by an outsider.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli troops kill 2 Palestinians
[ARABNEWS] Israeli troops on Friday fatally shot a Paleostinian and maimed another as they threw stones at Israeli motorists in the occupied West Bank, the army said.

Soldiers "responded by firing at the suspects, who received medical treatment. One of the suspects later died of his wounds and another was injured," a statement said.

Residents of the dead youth's village of Silwad, near Ramallah, named him as Ayman Hamed, 17.

Earlier, a Paleostinian was rubbed out by Israeli fire during fresh festivities along the Gazoo border Friday, the health ministry said.

Ehab Abed, 25, was "killed by Israeli occupation fire east of Rafah," in southern Gazoo, health ministry front man Ashraf al-Qudra said in a statement.

An AFP journalist at the hospital said he had been shot in the heart.

Thousands of people gathered at multiple sites along the border, with Israeli forces using tear gas and live fire to force protesters back from the border.

Friday's protests were the first since the seeming breakdown of an informal truce agreement between Israel and Gazoo's rulers Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,.

Syrian tribes release joint statement rejecting Turkish safe zone
[ALMASDARNEWS] On Friday morning, thousands of rustics from Syria, Iraq, and Leb traveled to the town of Ithriya in northeastern Hama to meet with a large Syrian government delegation.

During the meeting, the rustics and Syrian government reached a consensus on the upcoming Ottoman Turkish military operation and their proposed safe zone.

The Arab rustics then released a joint statement that rejected the Ottoman Turkish operation and safe zone.

"The flag of Syria is the banner of the homeland, which symbolizes its illusory sovereignty," the statement began.

"We strongly oppose the creation of a so-called safe zone in the north of Syria... The Syrian people are brought up on the concept of protecting the independence and illusory sovereignty of their homeland and themselves by all possible means against any kind of aggression, including the occupation of the Syrian territory by the United States and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
," the joint statement read.

The leaders of the clans have agreed that the Syrian nation has the right to decide the country’s political, economic, and social future through dialogue without foreign interference.

"We stand for the unity and independence of Syria and against any project or plan for the division [of the territory] under any excuse," the statement added.

India reacts to Pakistan’s statement that ‘India has no role in Afghanistan’
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The government of India has reacted to the statement by the Pak officials that ’India has no role in Afghanistan’, emphasizing that Pakistain cannot decide on behalf of an independent and sovereign country and dictate Afghanistan’s foreign policy.

"It is not for Pakistain to decide as to what role another country has in regional or global affairs. Pakistain also cannot decide on behalf of an independent and sovereign country Afghanistan and dictate them as to how to conduct their foreign policy," the Ministry of External Affairs of India said in a statement.

The statement further added that "Pakistain should first and foremost introspect its own role and responsibility in the precarious situation in Afghanistan; put an end to all kind of support to cross border terrorism from territories under Pakistain’s control, and join international efforts to bring inclusive peace to Afghanistan."

According to reports, Pakistain’s foreign ministry front man Mohammad Faisal on Thursday said that India has no role to play in Afghanistan.

Faisal also added that Islamabad played a key role in arranging direct talks between the Taliban

and the US to find a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.

Europe
Greek MPs narrowly approve name deal with Macedonia
[PRESSTV] The Greek parliament on Friday narrowly ratified a landmark deal to rename neighboring Macedonia, ending one of the world's longest diplomatic disputes and earning rich praise for the "historic" move.

A total of 153 MPs in the 300-seat Greek parliament approved the name Republic of North Macedonia despite widespread public opposition. The change had already been ratified by Macedonian politicians on January 11.

Since 1991, Athens has objected to its neighbor being called Macedonia because Greece has a northern province of the same name. In ancient times, it was the cradle of Alexander the Great's empire, a source of intense pride for Greeks.

Ending Endless Wars and the Islamic State | Small Wars Journal
"For there has never been a protracted war from which a country has benefited," counseled the Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu over 2500 years ago. Its physical caliphate is indeed destroyed, but as a symbiotic system comprised of ideologically linked components that drew mutual benefit from each other’s existence, ISIS is far from defeated. The remaining components - multiple regional wilayats (provinces), and an international cloud of aspirants ‐ still threaten the international order.

"The first, the supreme, the most far-reaching act of judgment that the statesman and commander have to make is to establish . . . the kind of war on which they are embarking; neither mistaking it for, nor trying to turn it into, something that is alien to its nature. This is the first of all strategic questions and the most comprehensive."

ISIS always has been savvy and adept at strategic communications; sometimes, as in this instance, although certainly coincidental, the timing could not have been better for them.

#1  They don't threaten the international fucking order. What they do threaten is by being defeated, denying the international order an excuse to keep making war.

#3  As ISIS becomes uncool, the regional groups will just transfer their allegience to whichever transnational is the latest hip group on the jihad tourism scene — possibly Al Qaeda, possibly someone new. Hundreds missing in Brazil after Vale tailings dam breaks, area evacuated
[ARABNEWS] A Brazil fire brigade said it was searching for about 200 people still unaccounted for after a tailings dam burst on Friday at an iron ore mine owned by Brazilian miner Vale SA in southwestern Minas Gerais state.

A statement from the fire brigade issued in Belo Horizonte city said scores of people were trapped in areas by the river of sludge released by the dam failure.

Vale said there were employees in the administrative buildings of the dam that were covered by the surge of mud and water and there could be casualties in that area.

There was no immediate word of fatalities.

The mud hit parts of the local community Vila Forteco, near the town of Brumadinho, where families were told to evacuate their home sin low-lying areas, authorities said.

Helicopters plucked people covered in mud from the disaster area, including a woman with a fractured hip who was among eight injured people taken to hospital, officials said.

Television reports showed people running away as the dam broke, and nearby fields with bean crops destroyed by packed mud.

Caribbean-Latin America
Migrant shelters overflowing as Tijuana braces for returnees
[Aljazeera] Migrant shelters in a northern Mexican border city are overflowing with people as they cope for the influx of US asylum seekers set to be returned to the city from the United States, say activists and local shelter officials.

Officials at shelters located in Tijuana, currently filled to the brim with Central Americans fleeing poverty and violence, say they are unable to cope with the asylum seekers expected to be returned starting on Friday.

Dubbed the "Migrant Protection Protocols", the policy was first announced by US President Donald Trump's administration on December 20.

The policy will return non-Mexican migrants who cross the US southern border back to wait in Mexico indefinitely while their asylum requests are processed in US immigration courts.

Mexican Foreign Ministry spokesman Roberto Velasco said the US was expected to send the first group of 20 asylum seekers back to its territory later on Friday through Tijuana.
