White House Sought Options to Strike Iran
Obama Deep State gets the vapors
[WSJ via Drudge] State and Pentagon officials were rattled by the request

President Trump's National Security Council asked the Pentagon to provide the White House with military options to strike Iran last year, generating concern at the Pentagon and State Department, current and former U.S. officials said.

The request, which hasn't been previously reported, came after militants fired three mortars into Baghdad's sprawling diplomatic quarter, home to the U.S. Embassy, on a warm night in early September. The shells‐launched by a group aligned with Iran‐landed in an open lot and harmed no one.

But they triggered unusual alarm in Washington, where Mr. Trump's national security team led by John Bolton conducted a series of meetings to discuss a forceful American response, including what many saw as the unusual request for options to strike Iran.

"It definitely rattled people," a former senior U.S. administration official said of the request. "People were shocked. It was mind-boggling how cavalier they were about hitting Iran."
Perhaps you should find another field of work
The Pentagon complied with the National Security Council's request to develop options for striking Iran, the officials said. But it isn't clear if the proposals were provided to the White House, whether Mr. Trump knew of the request or whether serious plans for a U.S. strike against Iran took shape at that time.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, here visiting the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad this month, joined forces with national security adviser John Bolton to develop a more aggressive policy aimed at weakening the government in Tehran.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, here visiting the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad this month, joined forces with national security adviser John Bolton to develop a more aggressive policy aimed at weakening the government in Tehran.

Garrett Marquis, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said the body "coordinates policy and provides the president with options to anticipate and respond to a variety of threats."

"We continue to review the status of our personnel following attempted attacks on our embassy in Baghdad and our Basra consulate, and we will consider a full range of options to preserve their safety and our interests," he said.

Report: Nasrallah suffers heart attack
[IsraelNationalNews] Hezbollah leader reportedly fighting cancer and heart problems. The Lebanese media reported on Saturday that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was hospitalized after apparently suffering a heart attack.
Who knew he had a heart?
Additional reports said that Nasrallah is also fighting cancer.

Israel Hayom quoted Lebanese journalist Jerry Mahar as saying that "an intelligence source confirmed that a senior figure in the Hezbollah organization was hospitalized today in a hospital in the capital Beirut, and other sources confirmed that it was Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, who has been fighting cancer for years."

The reports were not confirmed by any official source in the country and Hezbollah did not respond to the report.

Nasrallah has not been seen in the media since reports of the exposure of Hezbollah tunnels in Operation Defensive Shield.

In his last public appearance in November, Nasrallah blasted reports of a cease-fire between Hamas and Israel and warned the Jewish State not to attack Lebanon.

"We condemn any form of normalization with the Zionist entity," Nasrallah said. "I say to the Palestinian people, do not lose hope over the Arab states' normalization with Israel; what before went on behind the scenes now is taking place publicly. The current normalization has put an end to Arab hypocrisy, and removed the mask from the swindlers and hypocrites."

#1  He is 58 years old.

About a decade ago he designated one of his cousins as a successor. About 6 years ago he made to decision (or Iran made the decision) that Hezbollah would throw their full weight behind Assad. This decision has resulted in several thousand dead Hezbollah fighters and many more wounded.

If he died there would likely be some sort of succession conflict.

#2  From the Times of Israel today:

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has denied reports that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is currently receiving treatment for cancer.

"The recent claims by the Zionists that Nasrallah is sick are the biggest lie of the year," he states.

This doesn’t addess the question of the heart attack, oddly enough.

Can Trump Be Impeached?
On the Dallas Morning News' front page of the Sunday "Points" (opinion) page. Originally published December 20, 2018 at National Review. The title is from the print newspaper; the on-line headline is more ...'edgy'.
[Dallas News] Impeachment chatter is suddenly in vogue. It was strictly déclassé during the Obama years. To hear congressional Republicans tell it, the Clinton fiasco of the late Nineties proved both that the Constitution’s procedure for removing corrupt presidents is futile and that invoking it guarantees political carnage for the accusers.

Today’s Democrats, as the saying goes, never got the memo. Or perhaps they have known all along that their counterparts learned precisely the wrong lessons from President Bill Clinton’s impeachment. Now that the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump is a realistic contingency, though, getting those lessons right is vital.

The problem with Clinton’s impeachment was not the impeachment process itself. It is difficult by design, as it must be for stability’s sake. But it is hardly obsolete. It did, after all, drive a president from office ‐ Richard M. Nixon, who resigned on the cusp of impeachment ‐ just 25 years before articles of impeachment were filed against Clinton.

No, the problems were twofold. First was the nature of the impeachable offenses. It is not the case, as is commonly assumed, that they were salacious, but that they were remote from the core duties of the presidency. Second was the mulish insistence on pursuing impeachment when the public was clearly opposed to it. An impeachment effort cannot succeed without the tireless building of a political case in favor of removal, a case that achieves a critical mass of public support before impeachment is sought.
But the Dims - and the media - have been tirelessly building their case for the last two years.
Hindsight is always 20/20, of course. I was still a Justice Department prosecutor during most of Bill Clinton's second term as president, not a journalist doing public commentary. But I favored his impeachment, just as most Republicans and conservatives did. It is easy to see now that the episode has had an enduring, poisonous effect on our politics.

When the Framers debated the Constitution, among their principal concerns were the awesome powers of the new executive office they were creating in Article II, that of the president of the United States. It would be "indispensable," James Madison opined, to vest the power to remove the chief executive in Congress, which was conceived as the dominant, Article I branch, most accountable to the sovereign ‐ the people.
What percentage of the midterms electees were new to national politics, I wonder?
Some delegates believed the ballot box would be an adequate check. The consensus, however, was that an impeachment power was essential, and not merely for such obvious corruption as treason and bribery. The Framers adopted a term of art from British law, "high crimes and misdemeanors," to address truly egregious instances of maladministration.
Oh, go read the whole thing. The National Review article has fewer impediments than the Dallas News site. NR article from 12/20/18 Wanna skip down to the conclusion? Here ya go -
The Republicans' post-Clinton assumption that impeachment efforts are politically ruinous is wrong. After 1998, Republicans continued to win elections until 2006. Rather, the Clinton impeachment teaches that the public has a healthy resistance to impeachment but will abide a failed impeachment sought in good faith. It further instructs that the Constitution's high impeachment hurdles cannot be surmounted without an indefatigable political campaign urging the president's ouster. To be credible, that campaign must be based on clear misconduct that implicates core presidential duties and imperils our constitutional order. To seek impeachment in the absence of such gross maladministration, or to seek it in the teeth of public opposition, is to guarantee failure.

Mexico oil chiefs under pressure as fuel crisis hits capital
Posted by: DarthVader || 01/13/2019 11:22 || Comments || Link || E-Mail|| [8 views] Top|| File under:

#1  Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, in an interview with El Financiero Bloomberg TV that’s airing late Tuesday, said the fight against illegal pipeline taps by fuel thieves known as “huachicoleros” will take some time, and that the gasoline supply would begin to normalize bit by bit.

“We have enough gasoline, there’s no problem, it’s a matter of distribution,” Lopez Obrador said. In the worst of cases pipelines could reopen, he said.

The mounting crisis, which is compounded by congestion at Mexico’s ports and refinery closures, could not come at a worse time for Pemex and the Energy Ministry. In the past two months, they have let go some of their most experienced executives to make way for their replacements under the government of Lopez Obrador.

Birmingham police sergeant killed, officer injured after confronting car burglary suspect
[WVTM-13] BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ‐ A car burglary investigation near downtown Birmingham turned deadly early Sunday morning when a suspect opened fire on two officers, killing one of them.

The shooting occurred on 5th Avenue North, where an undercover officer and a uniformed sergeant encountered a pair of car burglary suspects just before 2 a.m. Smith said one suspect pulled a gun and opened fire after being confronted by the officers. The chief said the sergeant was "mortally wounded" and the officer was critically injured.

Smith said one suspect was injured in the shooting and taken to the hospital for treatment. The second suspect was taken into custody.

The names of the officers are being withheld pending notification of family.

This is the first Birmingham officer killed in the line of duty in more than 14 years. On June 17, 2004, three officers were shot and killed while serving a drug warrant in Ensley. It was the deadliest day in department history.

"This is a very difficult time," Smith said. "There are members on this department that have worked with them for years, and they're hurting just like everyone else."

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.

#1  Global compact for migration

The global compact for migration is the first, intergovernmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, to cover all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner. Today, there are over 258 million migrants around the world living outside their country of birth. This figure is expected to grow for a number of reasons including population growth, increasing connectivity, trade, rising inequality, demographic imbalances and climate change. Migration provides immense opportunity and benefits – for the migrants, host communities and communities of origin. However, when poorly regulated it can create significant challenges. These challenges include overwhelming social infrastructures with the unexpected arrival of large numbers of people and the deaths of migrants undertaking dangerous journeys.

‘We struck thousands of targets': IDF chief of staff on Israel's ‘near-daily' strikes in Syria
[RT] The outgoing IDF chief of staff has acknowledged that Israel has been bombing Syria on a "near-daily" basis for years, in a massive military campaign allegedly aimed at degrading Tehran’s supposed military buildup in the region.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) rarely acknowledge striking specific targets in Syria but its outgoing chief of staff just openly confessed to running a large-scale bombing campaign in its neighbor’s territory.

In 2018 alone, Israel dropped around 2,000 bombs on alleged Iran-linked targets, Gadi Eisenkot told the New York Times in his final interview as chief of staff of the IDF before he retires next week.

"We struck thousands of targets without claiming responsibility or asking for credit," Eisenkot stated, confessing to carrying out strikes on a "near-daily" basis.
Update from the Times of Israel at 1:00 p.m. ET:
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday confirmed that Israel conducted an Arclight airstrike against Iranian targets in Syria over the weekend, which he said destroyed a number of weapons caches in the Damascus airport.

"The Israel Defense Forces has attacked hundreds of Iranian and Hezbollah targets. Just in the past 36 hours, the air force attacked Iranian depots full of Iranian weapons in the Damascus International Airport," Netanyahu said, speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting in his Jerusalem office, in a rare acknowledgement of such a raid.

MAJ Danny Sjursen: Hypocrisy Without Bounds - The Tragedy of ‘Liberal' Foreign Policy
[AntiWar.com] The president says he will bring the troops home from Syria and Afghanistan. Now, because of their pathological hatred of Trump, mainstream Democrats are hysterical in their opposition.

If anyone else were president, the "liberals" would be celebrating. After all, pulling American soldiers out of a couple of failing, endless wars seems like a "win" for progressives. Heck, if Obama did it there might be a ticker-tape parade down Broadway. And there should be. The intervention in Syria is increasingly aimless, dangerous and lacks an end state. Afghanistan is an unwinnable war ‐ America’s longest ‐ and about to end in outright military defeat. Getting out now and salvaging so much national blood and treasure ought to be a progressive dream. There’s only one problem: Donald Trump. Specifically, that it was Trump who gave the order to begin the troop withdrawals.

Lost in the haze of their pathological hatred of President Trump, the majority of mainstream liberal pundits and politicians can’t, for the life of them, see the good sense in extracting the troops from a couple Mideast quagmires. That or they can see the positives, but, in their obsessive compulsion to smear the president, choose politics over country. It’s probably a bit of both. That’s how tribally partisan American political discourse has become. And, how reflexively hawkish and interventionist today’s mainstream Democrats now are. Whither the left-wing antiwar movement? Well, except for a few diehards out there, the movement seems to have been buried long ago with George McGovern.

Make no mistake, the Democrats have been tacking to the right on foreign policy and burgeoning their tough-guy-interventionist credentials for decades now. Terrified of being painted as soft or dovish on martial matters, just about all the "serious" baby-boomer Dems proudly co-opted the militarist line and gladly accepted campaign cash from the corporate arms dealers. Think about it, any Democrat with serious future presidential aspirations back in 2002 voted for the Iraq War ‐ Hillary, Joe Biden, even former peace activist John Kerry! And, in spite of the party base now moving to the left, all these big name hawks ‐ along with current Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer ‐ are still Democratic stalwarts. Heck, some polls list Biden as the party’s 2020 presidential frontrunner.

President Trump floats 'path to citizenship' for H-1B visa-holders
[CBS] President Trump floated a "potential path to citizenship" for H1-B visa holders in an early Friday morning tweet, as the partial government shutdown is set to become the longest shutdown on record.

It's unclear what Mr. Trump meant exactly, as simplifying a path to citizenship for such visa holders would almost certainly require approval from Congress, and the White House has made no such suggestion in its latest border security funding proposal, or any other public offer.

"H1-B holders in the United States can rest assured that changes are soon coming which will bring both simplicity and certainty to your stay, including a potential path to citizenship," Mr. Trump tweeted. "We want to encourage talented and highly skilled people to pursue career options in the U.S."

The H-1B visa, under the Immigration and Nationality Act, lets U.S. employers temporarily employ foreign workers with at least a bachelor's degree for speciality occupations. H-1B visa holders can apply for a green card to obtain permanent residency ‐ but even a green card does not equate to citizenship.

Mr. Trump has expressed openness to a broader immigration overhaul, but has insisted that he first wants funding for a concrete or steel wall or barrier, along with funding for technology and personnel to handle the situation at the border. It's unclear what prompted Mr. Trump's tweet.

Bolton tells Venezuela's dictator Maduro to cut the clown show and get out
[American Thinker] National security adviser John Bolton has never suffered fools gladly, so just now, from Abu Dhabi, he's let Venezuela's dictator, Nicolás Maduro, have it, telling him to cut the clown show in Caracas and just get out.

Here is what the Associated Press reports:
The United States stepped up its criticism of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro on Saturday with an explicit call for the formation of a new government in the South American country.

The U.S. State Department said in a statement that it stood behind the head of Venezuela's opposition-run congress, Juan Guaido, who said on Friday that he was prepared to step into the presidency temporarily to replace Maduro.

The statement was the latest in a series of Trump administration attacks on Maduro, whose inauguration to a new term as president on Thursday has been widely denounced as illegitimate.
Bolton's remarks are refreshing, because he's not even pretending Maduro's president these days. He actually isn't, because, having gotten himself into office by a fraud election and then illegally swearing himself in in front of judges instead of the opposition legislature, as the law says he must, he hardly is.

First thing we see from this is a new U.S. willingness to take a logical response from the reality on the ground, and that's good. That's also new, because for 20 years, the U.S. kept pretending.

Second, Bolton's saying what everyone in the region is thinking and, up until now, has been too afraid to say. He knows he has these nations behind him, so what we are seeing is that America is finally taking the lead, and there may well be an avalanche of other nations to follow.

Why President Trump will win the gov't shutdown
[The Federalist] Compromise. It’s a word President Trump used several times yesterday. He is open to compromise. In this case, that means something short of the $5 billion he wants for a border wall. He’s open to taking less, perhaps in exchange for not applying the law to younger illegal immigrants. This is clearly the easiest way out of the current debacle. But it is something the Democrats, led by "No Wall" Nancy Pelosi, have said they will never support.

This is a problem. Democrats have backed themselves up against a, well, a wall. They have created a situation in which if they give even one dollar to Trump to build a wall, or fence, steel barrier, or whatever, they have lost the political fight. Pelosi, the great speaker of the House who gets things done, has left herself no leverage to get anything done. She could ask for almost anything in exchange for wall funding, but instead, she won’t budge.

Trump is channeling his inner Michael Corleone and telling Democrats that his offer is this: nothing, not even the price of the border wall, which he would appreciate Pelosi appropriating. So here we are.

We all like to knock and mock Trump’s braggadocio claims that he is the best negotiator ever. But in this case, he really has outflanked his opponents. Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have painted themselves into a corner. They have said, "No funding for a wall." They say this despite the fact that they have supported barrier funding in the past. So in essence they have given themselves no fallback position.

The Democrats have made this a zero-sum game. If Trump gets any money for the wall, he wins. That’s a really fantastic position for him. He can go on TV, whether in a controversial network roadblock or an appearance on the southern border, and say, "Hey, I’m up for a compromise." Meanwhile, Chuck and Nancy have to slam the door shut on getting 800,000 federal employees back to work.

Here's an interesting thought. Maybe Trump should start offering emergency contracts to private companies to fulfill government functions during the shutdown. If done correctly the government would *never* have to be reopened. Image how Pelosi and crew would react!

Can Trump's Syria policy end the 'Forever Wars'?
[BBC] "We learned when America retreats, chaos often follows." This assertion was made by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during his recent speech in Cairo. But the remark did little to resolve the uncertainty among Washington's friends and allies in the region. Are US troops in Syria staying or going? If staying, for how long? And if going, when?

Mr Pompeo's speech was a broader attempt to re-set US policy in the region and to give some sort of coherence after days of mixed messages.

But taking a leaf from his boss in the White House, Mr Pompeo spent a good deal of his time castigating the Obama administration's approach and contrasting it with the apparent progress made on Mr Trump's watch.

But there were some significant elements missing in Mr Pompeo's remarks. There was no mention of human rights in Egypt or Saudi Arabia. Indeed there was only the briefest of mentions to Saudi Arabia at all, a country that surely should loom large in US policy.

The Yemen crisis got only a passing comment; divisions amongst the Gulf countries were papered over; and Mr Trump's much heralded peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians was not touched on at all.

Cesare Battisti: Italian ex-militant communist arrested in Bolivia
[BBC] A former communist militant who Brazil's new president had vowed to extradite has been detained in Bolivia, a Brazilian official said.

Italian Cesare Battisti is wanted for four murders in Italy during the 1970s, which he denies committing. Battisti spent years in Brazil as a refugee, backed by former left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

But far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who took office on 1 January, had pledged to send him back to Italy.

Filipe G. Martins, a senior aide on international affairs to President Bolsonaro, tweeted that Battisti "will be soon brought to Brazil, from where he will probably be sent to Italy to serve a life sentence".

An arrest warrant had been issued for Battisti in December, when Brazil's former President Michel Temer revoked his status as a permanent resident. The 64-year-old went on the run, and both his lawyer and the police told the BBC they had no idea of his whereabouts.

Tech CEO says 5G will drastically improve augmented reality
[The Hill] The founder and CEO of augmented reality company EchoAR told Hill.TV that 5G will dramatically improve the quality of interactive experiences.

"5G will have a tremendous effect on augmented reality," Alon Grinshpoon said during an episode of "Boundless" that aired Monday.

"At EchoAR, when we've created software solutions for content creators and developers, we basically provide them with tools and network infrastructure," Grinshpoon continued. "When 5G rolls out, that means we'll be able to provide them with ways to stream more data faster and efficiently and engage more users at the same time."

"'Pokemon Go' was a 4G experience. You were just seeing one small asset in the real world, but with 5G, you can stream a lot more data," he added. "You get much more meaningful experiences."

"Boundless" is a multi-part Hill.TV documentary series focused on technological advancements.

AOC attacks plantation - Calls out CBS News for not assigning a 'single black journalist to cover the 2020 election'
[The Hill] Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y) criticized CBS News Saturday night for what she considered lack of diversity in its team of reporters covering the upcoming 2020 presidential election.

Dozens of Democrats Flock to Puerto Rico for ‘Hamilton' Broadway Show Amid Shutdown
[Breitbart] Dozens of Congressional Democrats flocked to Puerto Rico on Friday to watch the opening weekend of Hamilton amid the ongoing government shutdown, in a trip that organizers hope will allow them to lobby for additional federal funding to the impoverished island.

According to Luis Miranda, a Democratic consultant and the father of Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, the trip will provide an opportunity for members of Congress, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, to see the need for further investment to Puerto Rico, with the island recovering from the impact of the 2017 hurricane that devastated large swathes of its infrastructure.

"They’ll get to experience firsthand the needs of the island, so that they go back and sort of fight (President) Trump and the Republicans," he said in an interview with CBS News.

Abdel Moneim Said - Exodus of the adults ('Martha And The Vandellas' Sunday bonus link)
From the author's perspective; globalism, endless conflict, tribal meddling and regime change are all good. President Trump is not aligned with the global view, therefore he is not an "adult" but simply a unenlightened "white man."

Thank you! Thank you Abdel, We're finally getting it.

BLUF:
[Al Haram] Presidents come and go, but the US and its strategic interests and assets remain constant. Among the most important of these are NATO, the joint defense treaty between Washington and Tokyo, the EU as an important wing of the Western camp and the Anglophone intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the US.
Abdel, please tell me you're not on FIVE EYES distro.
All these arrangements and institutions were the product of the enormous efforts the US had invested in order to counter the Soviet Union and communist ideology and to create such global institutions as the World Trade Organisation, an embodiment of globalisation and liberal ideology and the technologies that bind the planet and organise humankind’s forays into outer space. But Trump was not convinced. In fact, he frequently expressed his "lack of respect" for America’s allies, NATO and the EU.

Trump comes from different school. He doesn’t see the world as one. He does not even share a vision for a world becoming one, in the ways it deals with crucial concerns from trade to global warming. To him, the world is made up of discrete national entities, each having its own set of interests and abilities.
There it is! There it is! The "Global Warming" three point shot!
To him, the entity that he is in charge of ‐ the US ‐ has little interest in the welfare of the rest of the world. It cares about its own welfare and the welfare of its people or, more accurately, the white people who have been trampled on by the march of "coloured" peoples from all quarters of the world.
Abdel, did AOC help you write this? Come on man.
So, the Trump approach is to deal with the world as separate units, each with its own bilateral relationship with the US. Multilateral organisations like the UN, WTO and NAFTA mean nothing if they mean moving US factories to Mexico or letting China have a permanent trade surplus over the US.

Europe
Natives in decline
[Wash Times] As native populations in Europe decline, they’re increasingly being replaced by immigrants from different and sometimes hostile cultures. The long-term question bothering many Europeans is whether the complex cultures in Europe, carefully cultivated and which have contributed much to the world, can survive this infusion.

Demographic predictions are notoriously subjective, vulnerable to distortion and misinterpretation. Short-term movements can be mistaken for long-term perspectives. Germany is the dramatic example of the phenomenon.

In 10 years’ time there will be a shortage of at least 3 million skilled workers in Germany. Economic growth will otherwise slow if not collapse. Chancellor Angela Merkel is trying to simplify recognition of foreign vocational training degrees and the government no longer requires employers check whether native Germans are available to fill job openings. She would issue temporary residence permits to qualified foreign German-speakers to live in the country while they search for work.

Germany is the second most popular migration destination in the world, after the United States, and is home of the second highest percentage of immigrants in its general population, after Britain. By United Nations estimates that 12 million people living in Germany are immigrants, nearly 15 percent of the total population.

In the aftermath of World War II, the West German government signed agreements with Italy, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Yugoslavia enabling recruitment of guest workers with few qualifications. Children born to such guest workers received the right of residence, but not citizenship, though many of them eventually did become German citizens.

Police in western Germany launch massive raids against criminal clans
[DW] More than 1,300 coppers were deployed in coordinated raids against family crime syndicates across northwestern Germany. The raids are focused on shisha bars, cafes and gambling venues.

German police launched simultaneous raids in six cities across the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) on Saturday evening, with some 1,300 officers sweeping shisha bars and other venues in Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg, Bochum, Recklinghausen and Gelsenkirchen.

Authorities said they were targeting family crime clans of Arabic background in the northwestern state. According to the mass-circulation Bild daily, police are focusing on the Arabic crime syndicates, especially those with Lebanese background.

Police are focusing on the Arabic crime syndicates, especially those with Lebanese background.
Police front man Oliver Peiler told news hounds that the coordinated raids started at 9 p.m. local time (2000 UTC).

"As we do quite often, tonight we are checking numerous shisha-bars (...) because the shisha bars act as sanctuaries for members of these family clans," he said.

Clans also use shisha bars, cafes, and gambling venues for money laundering and other illegal business activities, according to media reports. Police in Essen tweeted that a man has been detained carrying €9,000 ($10,322) in cash.

"He will now need to prove to the authorities that the money has been obtained legally," they said.

THOUSANDS OF MEMBERS
While dozens of people have been searched and mutiple properties swept, police are only expected to release official results of the crackdown on Sunday.

Firefighters, customs officers, members of the tax collection service and communal coppers were deployed alongside police squads. Police forces in the affected cities also shared images of the raids on social media under the hashtag "#NullToleranz," or zero tolerance.

There are about 50 criminal clans active in NRW, with their collective membership topping 10,000, according to police information cited by the Rhenische Post newspaper.
One hopes that number includes the recent acquisition of previously unaffiliated migrants who responded to Angela Merkel’s invitation.
The clans are often involved in prostitution, which is legal in Germany, but also commit acts of violence and vandalism, as well as welfare fraud and other non-violent crimes.

The police are currently investigating the clans' possible offenses in the real estate market, state criminal police representative Thomas Jungbluth told the newspaper.

'NO TOLERANCE FOR LAWLESSNESS'
The police force in the city of Essen said that some clan members show "little respect towards police or emergency services."

"We won't stand for it," they tweeted.

State Interior Minister Herbert Reul, who observed the raid in Bochum, said it was paramount that state authorities respond to clan criminality.

"We need to show that we are here and that we have no tolerance for lawlessness," he said. "We must not allow that criminal structures decide what the law is in Germany."

Thai Security Forces Kill Two Linked to Deadly Shooting at School
[AnNahar] Two snuffies believed to be tied to a cycle of violence drive-by shooting at a school in Thailand's south were rubbed out Saturday, police said, as UNICEF warned of trauma for children near the scene of the lunchtime violence.

Since 2004 festivities between Malay-Moslem rebels and the Buddhist-majority Thai state that annexed the area over 100 years ago have killed nearly 7,000 people, mostly civilians of both faiths.

The conflict rarely makes global headlines but is a reality for residents of border provinces where security forces maintain a large footprint, aided by poorly paid defence "volunteers" drawn from local communities.

The four men killed in Thursday's shooting were all Moslems and were guarding a school in Pattani province when the attackers struck just before lunchtime with students mere metres away.

Pattani provincial police commander Piyawat Chalermsri told AFP Saturday that two people with alleged ties to the school violence were killed in a shootout Saturday morning.

Though he did not give information about their identities or affiliation, he said he was "confident that they are the same group who carried out the attack Thursday" by driving by on cycle of violences.

Authorities have also detained one suspect and are questioning five others, while a military source said an eight-year-old had been grazed by a bullet but not seriously injured.

UNICEF Thailand representative Thomas Davin said Friday that one child at the Bukoh school attack was reportedly injured by debris and some who may have witnessed the attack could face long term psychological trauma.

"This attack has undoubtedly put the school children, the teachers and school personnel in harm’s way. It has put children at grave risk of injury or death," he said.

"Such violence could also affect parents’ willingness to send their children to school ‐- potentially to the detriment of many children’s learning and future development."

The 15-year insurgency has seen scores of teachers killed, slain for their perceived collaboration with the Thai state, which led to the use of armed guards at schools.

The corpse count in the conflict dropped to a record low last year as Thailand's junta tightened its security operations.

But recent weeks have seen an uptick in violence, as rebels show they remain able to carry out more pinpointed operations.

In a rare statement dated January 4 the main rebel group -- the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) -- swore to "keep fighting" while warning people not to help or support the state.

But Thai authorities as well as the Malaysian controller of the talks have recently expressed confidence they will make progress soon.

Former 4th Army commander Udomchai Thammasarorat said at the Foreign Correspondents Club in Thailand on Friday that he "wants to find a solution to exit from the violence" and he has urged the southern army commander to try and ensure public safety.

Syrian army shelling of opposition-held Idlib threatens ceasefire deal
[Rudaw] Syrian army artillery struck areas of opposition-held Idlib on Saturday after forces of Evil allegedly tried to infiltrate regime held areas, according to state TV network SANA.

Regime shelling was focused on the town of Tamanaa near Maaret al-Numan, which was seized from Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels by jihadist forces earlier this week.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based conflict monitor, the regime shelled six areas inside and around Idlib.

Opposition held areas of the province are now completely under the control of the "Salvation Government" ‐ the administrative arm of the former al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham

The group boasts 25,000 fighters, SOHR reports.

Turkey and Russia brokered a buffer zone agreement between the regime and the armed opposition last autumn to prevent a government offensive, which the UN feared would lead to a bloodbath.

Now that Ottoman Turkish-backed forces have withdrawn, it is unclear whether the ceasefire will hold.

Ottoman Turkish troops and tanks held military exercises on the border with Idlib on Saturday, Rooters reports. Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria fear Ankara is preparing for an offensive against the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and may move its forces east.

Rangers claim arrest of Lyari gangster wanted for 25 'heinous crimes'
[DAWN] Pakistain Rangers Sindh on Saturday announced to have jugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
a suspected gangster from Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, who is said to be wanted in "25 heinous crimes of killings, attacks on law enforcers, extortion, kidnappings, and others".

The paramilitary force conducted an intelligence-based operation in Ali Mohammed Mohalla of Lyari
...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot....
and apprehended Shahzad alias Mohammed Azeem alias Faizu Dada who was associated with Ghaffar Zikri gang.

Ghaffar Zikri was bumped off along with his minor son in an encounter jointly carried out by police and Intelligence Bureau in Lyari last year.

The Rangers spokesperson said the held suspect was wanted in assassinations, attacks on state institutions and extortion, and there were at least 25 FIRs registered against him. Moreover, the Sindh government had also announced a reward of Rs0.3 million for his arrest.

Attacks on law enforcers
Sharing details of the crimes allegedly committed by the suspect, the spokesperson said Shahzad along with his accomplices carried out at least 11 attacks on the coppers during 2007 and 2008, in which three innocent citizens were also killed during an exchange of fire.

He also bumped off one Kareem Shah over non-payment of extortion in 2009, besides killing a Baloch person on directions of Ghaffar Zikri in the same year, the official said.

"In 2011, he rubbed out an alleged drug peddler, Shah Jehan. Later that year, he along with his accomplices kidnapped a member of Kutchi Rabita Committee, Jamshed, and killed him.

The Rangers have handed him over to police for further legal action.

Iraq
Iran and Iraq hail energy cooperation as US reins in sanction waivers
[Rudaw] Iraq’s oil minister Thamer al-Ghadhban and his Iranian counterpart Bijan Namdar Zangeneh met on Saturday to discuss Iranian gas imports for Iraq’s power stations. However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
the US has signaled the sanction waivers it granted to some of Iran’s energy customers will soon expire.

During a presser following their meeting, Ghadhban stressed the importance of Iran and Iraq’s relationship and efforts at "expanding the horizons of bilateral cooperation in economic fields."

For his part, Iranian Oil Minister Zangeneh said "the discussions were useful and fruitful, and included many topics of common interest, including cooperation in the oil and energy sectors."

"The two sides agreed in principle on bilateral cooperation in the development of some small border fields shared between the two countries after technical studies," he added.

This is thanks to 90-day exemption granted to Iraq on December 21 to continue payments for Iranian electricity and gas imports.
Energy cooperation has continued between Iran and Iraq despite US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s resumption of sanctions against Tehran’s economy and threats against nations who do business with Iran.

This is thanks to 90-day exemption granted to Iraq on December 21 to continue payments for Iranian electricity and gas imports. Without the imports, Iraq’s already defective electricity network would see rolling blackouts.

Power outages last summer led to serious unrest in Iraq’s southern province of Basra. US diplomatic staff were forced to evacuate and Iran’s consulate was torched.

Officials in Iraq have reiterated their country is not party to the US sanctions on Iran, but have not explicitly declared Baghdad’s non-compliance.

Last week, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said his country’s oil sales are continuing as expected, noting that the United States would not be able to prevent them from exporting oil and gas and their products.

Trump announced the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in May last year. This was followed by fresh rounds of economic sanctions on August 6 and November 5.

On Saturday, US special representative for Iran Brian Hook said there would be no further waivers for states deeply dependent on Iranian oil ‐ including China, India, Japan and South Korea.
That will certainly make life interesting for all involved.
"We are not looking to grant any waivers or exemptions to the import of Iranian crude," Hook told an industry conference in Abu Dhabi, according to Rooters.

"Iran is now increasingly feeling the economic isolation that our sanctions are imposing ... We do want to deny the regime revenues. Eighty percent of Iran’s revenues come from oil exports and this is (the) number one state sponsor of terrorism ... We want to deny this regime the money it needs," he added.

As a close economic and political ally of both the US and Iran, Iraq finds itself in an awkward position. It is unclear whether a special dispensation will continue for Baghdad, or whether Washington will again tighten the screws on Tehran.

Nigeria: In Plagiarised Manifesto, Nigeria's Ruling APC Pledges to 'Keep America Safe'
To be fair, it is Nigeria.
[All Africa] The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has been caught padding its manifesto for the 2019 elections with materials copied from foreign websites without attribution.

The brazen plagiarism, which appeared from the title of the party’s ’plan’ for energy infrastructure, comes amidst complaints of a worsening disregard for intellectual property rights in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari apologised in 2016 after being caught using lines of a speech once delivered by former American President Barack Obama
Ready to Rule from Day One...
without attribution.

Only last week, Segun Sowunmi, a spokesperson of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party presidential campaign organization, also apologised for stealing a speech from President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and claiming it as his original thought in a New Year message on Facebook.

In the manifesto it recently uploaded on its website, the APC said its priority was to "ensure a safe and secure America ", setting itself up for scrutiny of the rest of the document which was designed to convince Nigerians that the party deserved reelection at the poll next month.

A google search of the first paragraph under the power’s proposal for power infrastructure revealed that the words were lifted in verbatim from either of a slew of website where they previously appeared, and without any attribution.

The paragraph reads: "Assertively pontificate long-term high-impact testing procedures wiProgressively synergize timely action items and business "outside the box" thinking. Distinctively foster best-of-breed markets before collaborative schemas. Authoritatively embrace tactical potentialities vis-a-vis low-risk high-yield architectures. Completely administrate robust testing procedures vis-a-vis dynamic testing procedures. Globally fabricate functional intellectual capital for B2B e-services."

The possible places where the party might have lifted the lines included one American political action page and and an Ivoirien energy website .

It was not immediately clear which one the party plagiarised amongst the websites, who appeared to have similarly plagiarised one another.

Rada reported that most of the movements of these suspected elements are on the outskirts of the cty of Sebha (al-Qardah, al-Thanawiya, Abdulkafi district, al-Taouri, Goda and surrounding farms as well as the Um al-Hares area with some elements of Isis).

The suspected elements move between checkpoints with forged personal papers as well as the disguise in the occasional attire of women, Rada explained.

Rada is aligned to the Faiez Serraj Presidency Council and Government of National. It is led by Abdelrauf Kara who follows the Salafi/Madkhali interpretation of Islam, a more conservative strain from the traditional Malaki/Sufi practiced in Libya.

Undertrial prisoner escapes from Karachi's Jinnah hospital, two court policemen arrested
[DAWN] An undertrial prisoner beat feet from Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) which resulted in the arrest and suspension of two court coppers over charges of criminal negligence, officials said on Saturday.

The prisoner was brought to JPMC on January 5 and got admitted in the general ward from where he managed to escape early Friday morning (Jan 11) despite the presence of the court police, said JPMC Executive Director Dr Seemin Jamali.

The suspect had gunshot wounds on his leg which was previously operated upon. He was admitted again to undergo surgery as he felt difficulty in walking, added Dr Jamali.

The JPMC director said the coppers deployed at the hospital were present at the time of his escape.

"Usually, they [the coppers] did not wear uniforms and appeared to be very casual towards their discipline," Jamali said.

Regional powers stick with Bashir as Sudan protests mount
[PULSE.NG] As angry protests pile pressure on Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
to step down, key powers are standing by his regime to ensure stability in a strife-torn region, analysts say.

Demonstrations that erupted in the provinces last month after the government tripled the price of bread have escalated into nationwide protests that analysts say pose the biggest challenge to Bashir since he took power in an Islamist-backed coup in 1989.

UN Secretary-General urges Libya to seize prisons’ control from militias
[LIBYANEXPRESS] UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is urging the Libyan government to bring all prisons under its control and free from the grip of militias, some of whom run migrant-smuggling networks.

Guterres said in a report to the Security Council released Thursday, January 10, that torture and arbitrary detention is widespread in Libya.

About 6,400 detainees are held in 26 official prisons but "thousands of others" are being held in facilities with little government control or "directly run by gangs," said the report.

"I remain deeply concerned about widespread human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
violations and abuses committed in the context of detention and the prolonged arbitrary detention of thousands of men, women and kiddies without due process," wrote Guterres.

The government must protect detainees against torture and "all prisons must be under effective government control and free of any influence or interference of gangs," he added.

Guterres also reported that an increase in the number of migrants colonists and refugees who were detained over the past 6 months was a result of more interceptions at sea and the closure of sea routes to migrants colonists.

About 5,300 refugees and migrants colonists have been detained in Libya of whom 3,700 were in need of international protection, he said.

In all, there are over 669,000 migrants colonists in Libya, of whom women and kiddies make up 21 percent, according to the report.

Nigeria: Petrol Tanker Explodes, Kills 60 People in Calabar
[All Africa] No fewer than 60 persons were feared dead yesterday when a tanker loaded with Petroleum product fell and went kaboom! along Odukpani LGA axis of the Ikom-calabar Highway near the Federal Housing estate, Calabar, Cross River. The victims were scooping fuel from the tanker when it went up in flames.

An eyewitness, Mr Slyvester Ilem who narrated how the tragedy occurred said; "I saw people running to the scene with gallons and other containers to scoop fuel after the tanker veered off the road into a ditch by the roadside.

"Police officers from Odukpani Division also tried to cordon-off the area but the people refused and continued to scoop fuel. The rest is now history as the tanker burst into flames and engulfed all the people near and within the radius that the product had spread to.

"Let me be modest, the people scooping that fuel will not be less than 60 to 70 people because it was like a market place," he said.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo confirmed the incident adding that they had earlier warned the victims who took advantage of the illegal act but they were all dead now.

"Our men from Odukpani Division went there to cordon-off the area but the people refused and continued scooping fuel and before we knew it, the place was already in flames. As we speak, we cannot confirm the number of deceased persons because the fire is still heavy. It is only when the fire subsides that we can account for the victims, and give analysis of what happened there," she said. She however condoled with the families who lost their loved ones in the tragedy.

The government-sanctioned view from Egypt.
[AlAhram] This year has seen a downward trajectory in the activities of terrorist groups in the Middle East, but there is little room for complacency.

Years of reluctance in dealing with the two major financiers of the Muslim Brotherhood and other radicals, Turkey and Qatar, has rendered the War on Terrorism largely useless.
The term the "War on Terrorism" was coined on 11 September 2001 when the horrendous attacks on New York and Washington gave rise to a new era of asymmetrical warfare between the world’s governments and terrorist groups.

The term still represents a state of ongoing war that has moved from Afghanistan and spread across the globe since its declaration by former US president George W Bush in retaliation to the 9/11 attacks.

Book of the Week 1/20/2019: On Desperate Ground
On Desperate Ground - The Marines at the Reservoir, the Korean War’s Greatest Battle
By Hampton Sides
Doubleday, 2018

Amazon - On Desperate Ground

From an introduction before the Table of Contents:

Sun Tzu says that in battle there are nine kinds of situations, nine kinds of "ground." The final and most distressing type is a situation in which one’s army can be saved from destruction only be fighting without delay. It is a place with no shelter, and no possibility of easy retreat. If met by the enemy, an army has no alternative but to surrender or fight is way out of the predicament.

Sun Tzu calls this "desperate ground".

And he wasn't even considering the temperature is 25 below zero.

I had read several articles about the "Frozen Chosin" and my son returned from Boot Camp well-versed in the story. This book has quite a bit of the history leading up to the battle – about a third of the volume, starting with some Korean perspective history and the end of World War II. The Japanese constructed Chosin Reservoir to generate electricity for their war factories in occupied Manchuria.

MacArthur's brilliant, impossible landing at Inchon is covered in some detail, but it seems the success of that effort caused his ego to go into hyperdrive, leading him to ignore warnings and intelligence about the coming Chinese invasion.

The author wove a fascinating human interest story into the horror. A teenager flees the North shortly after the end of WW II and starts a new life in Seoul. The commies invade, so he hides. When the Americans recapture Seoul, he lies about his birthplace and becomes a translator in the center of the drive to the Yalu, the North Korean port of Hungnam – which just happens to be his birthplace. He gets a few hours off, finds his family, and ultimately helps them escape to the south. You just can't make this stuff up!

The author does not portray MacArthur generously, nor his right-hand man in Korea, General E. M. Almond. Almond performs a fantastic humanitarian gesture, however. After all the Marines and troops have departed from Hungnam Harbor, he facilitates transport for 100,000 refugees fleeing the advancing Chinese army. The author claims more than a million South Koreans trace their lineage to those evacuated.

Plenty of detail about the Marines, the vicious fighting, heroism, courage, brutality, and intense cold, as well as the Army on the eastern shore of the Reservoir. The detail of the episodes makes you wonder if there were awards for valor. The photos depict several heroes with their Medal of Honor.

The ending seems somewhat anticlimactic. Once the Marines construct a makeshift bridge, destroyed by the Chinese, everyone sort of strolls down the hill into Hungnam harbor for debarkation. An epilogue details some of the participants’ later lives. Once the fighting starts, you won't want to put the book down.
Posted by: Bobby || 01/13/2019 00:00 || Comments || Link || E-Mail|| [7 views] Top|| File under:

#1  ...This was also the fight where the Marines were coming up on an impassible ravine, and the US Air Force managed to drop several bridge sections that were manhandled into place by the Marines, and the breakout went on.

From Wiki:
"With the path to Hungnam blocked at Funchilin Pass, eight C-119 Flying Boxcars flown by the US 314th Troop Carrier Wing were used to drop portable bridge sections by parachute.[1]:297[34] The bridge, consisting of eight separate 18 ft (5.5 m) long, 2,900 lb (1,300 kg) sections, was dropped one section at a time, using a 48 ft (15 m) parachute on each section.[1]:296 Four of these sections, together with additional wooden extensions were successfully reassembled into a replacement bridge by Marine Corps combat engineers and the US Army 58th Engineer Treadway Bridge Company on 9 December, enabling UN forces to proceed.[1]:296–304 Outmaneuvered, the PVA 58th and 60th Divisions still tried to slow the UN advance with ambushes and raids, but after weeks of non-stop fighting, the two Chinese divisions combined had only 200 soldiers left.[9]:108 The last UN forces left Funchilin Pass by 11 December.[1]:314"

I have read for years about the Breakout, but it didn't hit me until just recently that when my Dad joined the Corps in mid-'53, the men who walked out of Chosin were the ones that trained him. I understood him a lot better after that.

#4  East of Chosin: Entrapment and Breakout in Korea, 1950 by Roy E. Appleman, LT.Col. AUS (Retd). He also wrote a two-book history of the Korean war (very good!).

He covers the short, doomed battle of the Task Force Faith, the 31st Infantry RCT, that is overlooked by most in the Chosin Reservoir battle. Normally the only mention is a derisive sneer at the Army stragglers... But remember that without them the Marines would have had one less regiment concentrated and had to still face the same number of ChiComs.

Home Front: WoT
US judge says California man jailed for attending terrorist camp in Pakistan was wrongfully convicted
[DAWN] A federal magistrate on Friday recommended overturning the controversial 2006 conviction of a Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, man accused of attending a terrorist training camp in Pakistain and plotting an attack in the United States.

Hamid Hayat,
...did he spend time at an Al Qaeda training camp or did the site in the Northwest Frontier Province belong to the Pakistani army? Did he confess or was his testimony unfairly nudged by the FBI? And what ever happened to his father, Umer Hayat?
now 36, who was then a young cherry-picker from Lodi, has served about half his 24-year sentence.

But US Magistrate Judge Deborah Barnes said he likely never would have been convicted were it not for the inexperience of his defense attorney, who failed to call alibi witnesses.

"A reasonably competent attorney would have done more to investigate Hayat's alibi," Barnes said in a 116-page opinion.

Her recommendation that the conviction be vacated now goes to US District Judge Garland E. Burrell Jr.

He presided over Hayat's original trial, conviction and sentencing and previously rejected a defense motion over whether Hayat was properly represented at trial. Either side can appeal Burrell's eventual decision.

Barnes heard new testimony from witnesses who said Hayat, who was born in California, never had time to receive terror training while visiting relatives and getting married in his ancestral village in Pakistain.

Barnes also found that Hayat's defense attorney, Wazhma Mojaddidi, should have put on evidence from an expert on false confessions who could have countered prosecutors' claim that Hayat confessed.

Mojaddidi, an immigration and family law attorney who was trying her first criminal case, said she "passionately represented Hamid Hayat as a young attorney and worked with a great team of lawyers and Sherlocks in his defense."

She said in a statement that she always has believed he is innocent and is elated by Barnes' recommendation.

Prosecutors are reviewing the magistrate's recommendation, US Attorney McGregor Scott said.

"It has consistently been our position that Mr Hayat received effective representation at trial and that his conviction by a jury, subsequently affirmed by the Ninth Circuit, is completely valid," he said in a statement.

One of the three appellate judges dissented when the court upheld Hayat's conviction in 2013, saying jurors erred in convicting Hayat based on predictions of what he might have done.

Hayat's attorneys said Barnes' opinion goes beyond finding that his conviction should be overturned.

"The judge found the testimony of the alibi witnesses sufficiently credible to conclude that Hamid would likely not have been convicted if the jury had heard these witnesses," they said in a statement. "That is effectively a finding of actual innocence."

We’ve curtailed herdsmen/farmers crisis in Adamawa, Taraba — 23 Brigade Commander
[PULSE.NG] The Brigade Commander, 23 Brigade, Yola, Brig. Gen. Bello Muhammad, said his command had succeeded in curtailing festivities between herdsmen and farmers in Adamawa and Taraba states.

Muhammad said this on Saturday in Yola at the annual West African Social Activities (WASA) organized by the command.

"The brigade has successfully curtailed the crisis between the herdsmen and farmers in Adamawa and Taraba states through the conduct of Ex Ayem Akpatuma.

"Similarly, the brigade successfully checkmated the activities of cattle rustling through the conduct of operation Kwanan daji and synergy with cattle dealers association.

"We have equally intensified patrols to checkmate the activities of remnants of Boko Haram

which had led to arrest of some of their kingpins.

"We have equally conducted joint operations with other security agencies to clear the mini Sambisa in Girei Local Government Area which has yielded positive result for the peace we are enjoying today," Muhammad said.

The commander, who lauded the Chief of Army Staff for providing the Brigade the enabling environment through welfare and prompt payment of troops operational allowances, reiterated their commitment to duty and better performance in 2019.

He said the command would enhance the barracks this year by constructing a guest house, children amusement park and second water project.

Highlights of the occasion, attended by Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa, were the inauguration of new classroom blocks for the Command Children School and the laying of foundation stone for skills acquisition centre and soldiers’ transit accommodation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that awards were also presented to officers and soldiers who distinguished themselves in the command.

New monarch appointed to ancestral kingdom of Dahomey
[PULSE.NG] Dah Sagbadjou Glele succeeds Dah Dedjalagni Agoli-Agbo, who died in July 2017 aged 84, dignitaries from royal families said following lengthy discussions.

Modern-day kings of Dahomey have no formal powers under Benin's constitution but retain much ceremonial, political and economic influence.

"The night was long but a new dawn has broken on the kingdom of Dahomey," they said.

One of those involved said the nomination was "happy and consensual" and that Glele was a worthy successor to Agoli-Agbo, a former police officer who had 41 wives.

The kingdom of Dahomey existed for nearly 400 years until its last ruling king, Behanzin, was defeated by the French in 1894.

The country then became part of French West Africa.

Dahomey was a major regional power built on conquest and the slave trade but also fostered major works of art and had an all-female military unit the French called the "Amazons of Dahomey".

China's Huawei fires employee arrested in Poland
[PRESSTV] China’s flagship technology company Huawei has fired its sales director in Poland after authorities arrested the former diplomat over suspicious activities.

Wang Weijing was arrested on Friday by Poland’s counterintelligence service on suspicion of spying.

Huawei announced Saturday that the employee’s contract had been expired.

“In accordance with the terms and conditions of Huawei’s labor contract, we have made this decision because the incident in question has brought Huawei into disrepute,” the company said in a statement.

It emphasized that Wang’s alleged spying activities were in no way related to the tech company. The prompt move by Huawei was seen to be in accordance with the Chinese telecom giant’s efforts to maintain its international image of a reputable private company independent of any interference by the government.

PUK’s Asayesh detained 65 PKK-linked Tavgari Azadi members in ‘wide attack’: party
[Rudaw] SULAIMANI - Tavgari Azadi accused the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) of cracking down on their party in order to curry favour with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
"They want to ban democratic movements like Tavgari Azadi for the sake of political agreements," a representative of the PKK-linked party read from a statement during a presser on Saturday.

In recent days, Asayesh (security forces) associated with the PUK have raided offices of Tavgari Azadi, tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
members, and banned the screening of a film about the life of an assassinated PKK founder.

Late last year, the PUK ordered the party to close its offices in the Kurdistan Region.

Tavgari Azadi, however, maintains it is authorized to operate because it is licensed by Baghdad.

Next week, a delegation plans to visit the Interior Ministry to try and sort out the problem, they said.

The party’s application for a license from the Kurdistan Regional Government has been unprocessed for years.

This past week, Asayesh have arrested 65 Tavgari Azadi members, their representative told news hounds, saying this was part of a "wide attack" on them.

The women have been subsequently released and some were present at the presser.

They claimed their members had been mistreated while detained and called on the international community to intervene and end the "brutal attacks" against them.

Two of the people detained are journalists and a Sulaimani-based media watchdog condemned the PUK’s actions, accusing the dominant party in the province of trying to "silence people."

The crackdown on the PKK-linked organization comes as the PUK is trying to negotiate an end to a flight ban imposed by Turkey on Sulaimani airport that has caused millions of dollars in damage. Ankara imposed the ban after accusing the PUK of supporting the PKK.

California Friday Sermon: Imam Ammar Shahin Cites Antisemitic Hadith, Prays for Annihilation of Jews, and Calls to Liberate Al-Aqsa Mosque from Their 'Filth'
One day this mosque or this imam will show up on Page 1: WoT, and then a search of our archives will throw up this article. Separately, the MEMRItv home page now has a section on peace and normalization with Israel. The times, they are a-changing.
[MEMRI] On July 21, 2017 the Egyptian-born American preacher Ammar Shahin delivered a Friday sermon at the Islamic Center of Davis, northern California, where he serves as Imam. In it he cited an antisemitic hadith, according to which the Muslims would fight the Jews on Judgment Day, and prayed to Allah to "liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the Jews" and to "annihilate them down to the very last one," not sparing any of them. "Oh Allah, make this happen by our hands. Let us play a part in this," he prayed in the sermon, which was posted on the Davis Masjid YouTube channel. Imam Shahin, who had earned a B.A. in Islamic studies in Egypt, traveled in 1999 to the U.S., where he obtained a degree in computer engineering. He is listed as an instructor of the Zidni Islamic Institute, a California-based organization that teaches Sunni Islam in the West.

Bethan Roper, 28, died 'after she leaned out the window of a moving train and was struck by a tree branch,' report finds
[Evening Standard] A woman who suffered fatal head injuries while leaning out of a train window was killed when she hit a tree branch, an accident report has found.

Bethan Roper, 28, had stuck her head out the window of Great Western Railway train near Twerton, Bath on December 1 when she was struck while the train travelled 85mph.

A preliminary report by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch found that a yellow “caution” label above the door said “do not lean out of window when train is moving.”

The door was fitted with an opening window to enable passengers to access the handle, which was on the outside.

Miss Roper was on board the London Paddington to Exeter service while returning to Penarth, South Wales from a Christmas shopping trip with friends.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
MS-13 Associate And Illegal Alien Pays To Have Sex With Trafficked 14-Year-Old Girl, Blackmails Her With Compromising Video
[DAILYCALLER] A suspect associated with the MS-13 gang will be tried for allegedly paying for sex with a 14-year-old girl, then blackmailing her with video of the encounter.

Felix Silva-Zuniga, 52, has been scheduled to be tried in Montgomery County Circuit Court for allegedly paying the gang leaders $100 to allow him to have sex with a 14-year-old girl, recording a video of the act, and then blackmailing her into continued sexual relations using the footage.

52yo Felix Silva-Zuniga allegedly used that video to blackmail the teen for more sex.

It happened inside of a home near Wheaton High School.

The girl was reportedly a human trafficking victim of the "Pinos Locos" clique of the MS-13 gang in Wheaton, MD. Investigators obtained information from a high ranking MS-13 member that she was a waitress at Lilly’s Restaurant, where her job was to "conduct cocaine and marijuana sales, and serve alcohol to customers."

When the teen told the gang she wanted to quit her job, authorities said the MS-13 members took her to a house on Valley View Avenue in Kensington and beat her with a baseball bat.

An affidavit filed in the case quotes a source who said they saw the girl after she was beaten and she had discolored arms and legs. According to the affidavit, the girl was then pimped by the gang to men willing to pay $100 to have sex with her.

The victim recalled walking with MS-13 members one night to Umberto’s Night Club, a couple of blocks away from Lilly’s Restaurant, and being coerced by gang member Willian Benavides-Pena to flirt with an older man only then known as "Felix." Benavides-Pena reportedly told her, "I know you don’t want to do it, but I need this, this man has a lot of money and I need you to do me a favor."

The victim got into a taxi with Felix, and they were later dropped off at a home along Bluhill Road near Wheaton High School. Once inside, Felix led her to the basement of the house where he told her to "just get comfortable." Despite her informing him that she was only 14 years old, Felix allegedly proceeded to have sexual intercourse with her.

Afterward, Felix reportedly told the girl that he had recorded the sexual act and that he would make it public if she did not agree to continue meeting with him regularly. The victim finally confided in Montgomery County Police after they had incarcerated

In July of 2018, Police sought to interview the man known as Felix, but when they arrived at the Bluhill Road address given by the female victim, they were told that he had moved out four months earlier. Later the same day, police spotted Felix at a Home Depot in Aspen Hill where he reportedly loitered frequently. Police arrested the 52-year-old, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed was in the U.S illegally. His trial is set to begin Monday, Jan. 13, 2019.

Afghanistan
Kabul Faces Water Crisis as Drought, Population Strain Supply
[AnNahar] Standing in his garden in Kabul, Baz Mohammad Kochi oversees the drilling of a new well more than 100 metres deep after his first water reservoir dried up. He is not alone.

A shortage of rain and snow, a booming population and wasteful consumption have drained the Afghan capital's water basin and sparked a race to the bottom as households and businesses bore deeper and deeper wells in search of the precious resource.

"The water level has dropped so much that it is now necessary to reach other underground basins 100 metres, even 120 metres" deep, says well digger Mohammad Aman as his dilapidated machine pierces the ochre earth in Kochi's yard.

French 'yellow vests' rally in fresh round of protests
[Al Jazeera] French Interior Ministry says 84,000 people took to the streets on Saturday across the country.

Masked men at a yellow jacket protest beating up reporters.

I see twitter as a good way around paywalls and other barriers.

Most twitter posts have the follow up comments that often link more places too, besides giving a very short summary. So if a paywall or other trick is in the way there are alternate references and quotable summaries. The "{n} people are talking about this" is a link to that conversation. Most of the highlighted blue is links.

Articles like those on Russia and China with people from those countries making posts or comments are only on twitter.

As to tech stuff like space and others MSM never comprehends the topic well enough to get it right, plus they are days (sometimes weeks) late. Twitter and sometimes Reddit present it better.

Oh and video of the press getting beaten up for supporting the globalist line? Not likely on an MSM (Main Stream Media) site.

Turkey grants PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan 1st prison visit in 2 years
[Rudaw] Abdullah Ocalan, the placed in durance vile
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
founder and ideological godfather of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), was granted his first visitor in more than two years, it emerged Saturday.

Mohammed Ocalan was allowed to visit his brother on Saturday at the remote Imrali Island prison in the Marmara Sea, where he has been incarcerated since 1999.

News of the visit was confirmed by his nephew Omar Ocalan and Parvin Buldan, chair of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
’s pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP), which has previously mediated between the PKK and the Ottoman Turkish state.

Mohammed Ocalan said his brother is in good health.

The Ottoman Turkish state ruled in September 2016 that Ocalan would no longer be allowed to receive visitors ‐ including family members.

His lawyers have not been allowed to meet the PKK leader since July 2011. This is despite 768 requests to see their client.

Ocalan founded the PKK in the 1980s, leading an armed uprising against the Ottoman Turkish state to achieve greater Kurdish political and cultural rights. Ottoman Turkish spies captured him in Nairobi with CIA assistance.

His struggle is underpinned by the leftist ideology of democratic confederalism, which calls for greater federal devolution of power. His ideas have influenced Kurdish opposition groups in Syria, Iraq, and Iran.

It is unclear why the Ottoman Turkish state has chosen now to allow the family visit, as its rhetoric against the PKK has become increasingly threatening and its cross-border operations in northern Syria and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq have intensified.

US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
announced in December the imminent withdrawal of the 2,000 US troops stationed in northern Syria, where they have been supporting the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against ISIS.

The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which makes up the backbone of the SDF, fears Turkey will attack them once US forces withdraw.

Ankara has repeatedly said it intends to march east of the Euphrates River and crush the YPG, which it views as an extension of the PKK.

Turkey has also continued to launch Arclight airstrikes and shell areas of the northern Kurdistan Region of Iraq and demanded the governments of Erbil and Baghdad force the PKK to withdraw from its mountain hideouts in Qandil.
