China can't afford to attack an American aircraft carrier
[HotAir] Shortly after the year began we looked at a report out of China where one of their very anti-American admirals had said that China might need to sink a couple of our aircraft carriers just to put us in our place. The guy is known for his hawkish hyperbole, so it didn’t seem that our government was taking him too seriously. But at the same time, the Chinese government didn’t exactly move to disavow his comments either. They’re referring to it as a "bloody nose" strategy, suggesting that if they hit us hard enough on the first shot we’ll turn tail and run. No credible experts seem to expect it to happen, but it was a situation worth monitoring at least.

We weren’t the only ones who noticed the admiral’s remarks. Some other experts in military affairs have begun weighing in on the subject. The majority of observers thus far appear to agree that a massive missile strike on an American carrier group in the South China Sea actually might be able to sink (or at least severely damage) one of our bird farms. But that hypothetical exchange has an end result that the Chinese won’t like at all. (Business Insider)

"The decision to go after an aircraft carrier, short of the deployment of nuclear weapons, is the decision that a foreign power would take with the most reticence," Bryan McGrath, founding managing director of The FerryBridge Group LLC, a naval consultancy, told Business Insider. "The other guy knows that if that is their target, the wrath of god will come down on them."

McGrath emphasized that threats to US carriers are old news, but that the ships, despite struggling to address the threat from China’s new missiles, still had merit.

"I would have been more surprised if we had seen former Chinese rear admiral say, ’The fact that we’re building aircraft carriers is one of the dumbest moves of the 21st century given the Americans will wax them in the first three days of combat,'" said McGrath, dismissing Luo’s comments as bogus scare tactics.

The short version of this tale is that if the Chinese actually did decide to open fire on one of our carriers, they might succeed in a surprise attack. But we would be able to decimate all of the useful and powerful elements of their navy in short order. We could also put quite a pounding to Beijing if we were so inclined. And by sinking one of our ships, the Chinese would have committed an act of war anyway so there would be nothing stopping us. Short of going to tactical weapons and given the massive logistical hurdles involved in shipping any significant number of their soldiers anywhere near our mainland, we could probably handle them.

#1  The big problem with this reasoning is the 9/11 precedent.

Comparatively weak Taliban ruled Afghanistan could afford to stage a mass fatality attack on the CONUS that was both an act of war and a war crime.

It is true that present day Afghanistan is a nothing more than sh*thole country. But this is in spite of Western efforts to improve conditions. This is not the effect of Western retaliation.

Western consensus policy since at least 9/11 has dramatically eroded Western deterrence, Chicom rhetoric and action is one of the consequences.

#2  Attacking a US carrier would merit nothing less than full scale war with China. It's kind of like killing a cop. You might get lucky, but the rest of them will be down on you like flies on sh*t.

#3  Ref #2: Yes, I believe the sinking or capture of any US vessel would probably bring an end to the China trade problem.

#5  You can only attack a US carrier if you can get your attack past the airgroup above, the subs beneath, and the ships surrounding that carrier and even then if you didn't take out that fleet it could probably eliminate the bulk of the Chinese navy without the carrier itself.

#6  Eventually the Chinese would have no maritime trade component left to their economy. I understand this is a large and critical portion of their economy.
I don't think they could adequately feed themselves after imports were terminated and the adjustment to reverting back to self sufficiency would take quite some time. Energy imports would be greatly reduced as would other imported materials which the current level of economic activity needs.
Posted by: Roger Smith || 01/14/2019 15:56 Comments || Top||

#7  RS, I made that point several months ago but one of the locals got a burr under his saddle and popped off. You are correct that the Chinese are dependent on the sea lanes to prosper, without them they are just another third world country. That is why control of the South China Sea is so important to them.

INEQUALITY: This Woman Makes Just $13 A Day Selling Pet Rocks On Etsy While MALE Robert Downey Jr. Made Millions Playing Iron Man
Satire Warning
[Babylon Bee] t’s 2018, and inequality is still a HUGE problem, even in a progressive utopia like Hollywood.

Case in point: this woman’s name is Xayley Briers. She spends forty-five minutes a day running her Etsy storefront selling pet rocks. Do you know how much she makes? About $13 a day.

Pretty sad, right?

Well, it gets worse. While Briers works her butt off selling and shipping pet rocks all over the country for almost an hour each day, Hollywood A-lister and cisgendered white male Robert Downey Jr. has made hundreds of millions of dollars for playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And what did he do? Simply help the franchise make billions worldwide. Both people are working hard, and one is making a LOT more money than the other. Why do you think that is? Oh, that’s right. It’s because she’s a WOMAN and he’s a MAN and our country apparently still doesn’t recognize women as human beings.

Can you say "injustice?" DISGUSTING.

Carol says nobody speaks to her when she is at home so she goes looking for company on public transport.

'The Brexit Vote Will Be A Complete And Utter Cluster....'
[Zero] Unfortunately... I suppose I should comment about the B word. I shall start by admitting ‐ like everyone else - I really don’t have a clue where we’re go from here. The political maths doesn’t work. There are no apparent solutions. There are multiple scenarios to game ‐ but none of them seem to lead anywhere positive.. The only thing I’m completely sure of: tomorrow, as MPs finally vote on the UK/EU divorce bill, we will hear lots of UK politicians spouting pointless blustering pompous nonsense moving us forward not a jot.

But, I also sniff great market opportunity. If you could afford to magically remove all UK chips from the table, you probably would... But you can’t. Where else would you invest? If you think British politics is crazy... tell me where isn’t? Yep, better to spread your bets across a globe of dysfunctional politics ‐ for that is the reality of the new Trumpist populist age.

The second issue for UK Inc is more fundamental. Alongside our bafflement at the amateur blundering ineptitude of the UK political system leading us to this place of befuddlement, I can’t help but wonder if we’re missing some fundamental positives about UK Inc, that the pros and cons of Brexit have been massively overexaggerated, and this is the time to buying? What if things are NOT really so fundamentally hopeless and bad as the hyped-up political rhetoric and verbiage suggests? What if Brexit isn’t so bad, or a good compromise can be found?

In the next few days I think I can confidently predict a complete and utter clusterf**k in parliament, the absolute disintegration of political common sense, unprecedented journalistic hyperbole, and profound disbelief across the economy. Confidence will collapse, the tinned goods shelves at the supermarkets will be empty. End of the world.. again.

It will be the perfect moment to scoop up UK Inc.

Dem Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Condemns ‘Religious Bigotry' In Judicial Nominee Process; Dem Sen. Hirono Hits Back
[DAILY WIRE] On Tuesday, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) released an op-ed titled, "Elected leaders who weaponize religion are playing a dangerous game."

The piece, published by The Hill, took aim at politicians who use religion as a cudgel against their political opponents, specially as it pertains to judicial nominees.

Gabbard wrote:
While I oppose the nomination of Brian Buescher to the U.S. District Court in Nebraska, I stand strongly against those who are fomenting religious bigotry, citing as disqualifiers Buescher’s Catholicism and his affiliation with the Knights of Columbus. If Buescher is "unqualified" because of his Catholicism and affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, then President John F. Kennedy, and the "liberal lion of the Senate" Ted Kennedy would have been "unqualified" for the same reasons.

Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution clearly states that there "shall be no religious test" for any seeking to serve in public office.

No American should be told that his or her public service is unwelcome because "the dogma lives loudly within you" as Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said to Amy Coney Barrett during her confirmation hearings in 2017 to serve as U.S. Circuit Court judge in the 7th Circuit.

Gabbard further wrote: "We must call this out for what it is ‐ religious bigotry. This is true not just when such prejudice is anti-Catholic, but also when it is anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, anti-Hindu, or anti-Protestant, or any other religion."

While the representative singled out Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) regarding her comment to 7th Circuit Judge (then nominee) Amy Coney Barrett, Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono (D) appears to have taken the op-ed personally, as she was one of the individuals who questioned nominee Brian Buescher regarding his faith and membership with the Knights of Columbus (KoC).

Through spokesman Will Dempster, Hirono’s office issued the following statement:

Florida Judge Sides With Brenda Snipes Over Suspension
[Townhall] U.S. District Court Judge Mark Walker ruled on Wednesday that former Florida Gov. Rick Scott had no right to suspend Broward County elections supervisor Brenda Snipes in November. Snipes had already announced her plans to retire on Jan. 4, before Gov. Scott effectively fired her.

Snipes was the face of the Broward County election controversy in November after her county became one of only two in the state that failed provide a ballot count in the Senate race between Scott and incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson (D) by the initial deadlines. They then missed a couple more deadlines after that. At one point Snipes was confronted by the press but she was unable to provide the number of outstanding ballots her office was still counting. This wasn't the first scandal for Snipes either. As Rep. Matt Gaetz (R) noted, Circuit Judge Raag Singhal ruled that Snipes had illegally destroyed ballots during Debbie Wasserman Schultz's primary race against challenger Tim Canova in 2016.

Operationalizing OSINT Full-Spectrum Military Operations
[SmallWarsJournal] Cyber resources available in abundance online, offline, locked in enterprise systems of record, or even in dusty hard copy libraries offer the Department of Defense (DoD) unique insight for use in all military operations. Enemies of the United States are currently operationalizing these libraries effectively, and with global reach, at little cost. As Steve Banach, former Ranger Battalion commander and 21st century warfare visionary states:

The entity that controls the Virtual Domain and masters Virtual War Campaigning first, will indirectly achieve social control, and will win every war they engage in, at pennies on the dollar. (Source: Small Wars Journal, Virtual War ‐ A Revolution in Human Affairs, Stefan J. Banach, URL: Link, accessed 13 December 2018.)

Adversaries of the United States rightly see the vast storehouses of seemingly innocuous data as key to understanding, undermining policy and goals, and potentially supporting kinetic, diplomatic, and economic victory over the United States. Operationalizing seemingly mundane data gives adversaries a powerful asymmetric weapon the DoD must recognize, plan for, counter, and themselves master.

Let us take a brief look at three examples of adversarial use of OSINT against the US. Recent examples of cyber operations run the gamut of counter-US strategy efforts at all echelons of command. The table below lists three recent events where competitors operationalized data against US interests:

The White House reportedly asked the Pentagon for military plans to strike Iran
[CNBC] The White House requested options for a military strike against Iran last September, a report by the Wall Street Journal revealed on Sunday, citing current and former U.S. officials.

The request, reportedly made the National Security Council led by national security advisor John Bolton, alarmed Pentagon and State Department officials, The Journal wrote on Sunday. The Council made the move after an Iranian-aligned group fired missiles into Baghdad’s diplomatic quarter, which hosts the U.S. embassy in Iraq. No one was harmed.

According to the publication, it remains unclear whether President Donald Trump himself knew about the request, whether the Pentagon ultimately delivered military options to the White House, and if concrete attack plans against the Islamic Republic were actually formulated. But officials who spoke to the publication confirmed that the Defense Department did indeed comply with the National Security Council’s request to develop those options.

Bolton, an avid proponent of the Iraq invasion during the George W. Bush administration, has long taken one of the hardest lines against Iran in Washington and has openly supported the idea of regime change in Tehran.

A spokesperson for the White House did not immediately reply to a CNBC request for comment. Garrett Marquis, a spokesman for the National Security Council told The Journal: "We continue to review the status of our personnel following attempted attacks on our embassy in Baghdad and our Basra consulate, and we will consider a full range of options to preserve their safety and our interests."

Europe
AfD party votes to campaign for German exit from EU
[Guardian] The German far-right party Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) has voted to campaign for the country’s exit from the European Union if its demand for reforms within the bloc are not met.

The decision on Sunday marks the first time any party has called for "Dexit" ‐ a German departure from the EU in the mould of Brexit.

If the EU is not reshaped in line with the party’s ideas "in an appropriate timeframe", Germany must leave the bloc, according to the draft manifesto for the forthcoming European parliament elections agreed by delegates at a party congress in the eastern state of Saxony.

Congress attendees also voted through a call to abolish the European parliament ‐ the very body that AfD candidates will be campaigning to join this spring.

"We see nation states as having the exclusive competence to make laws," the text said, attacking the "751 privileged members" of the present European house.

While both demands are now in the draft manifesto, a final vote later on Sunday will adopt or reject the entire campaign package. Elections for the European parliament will take place in May.

AfD was originally founded as a Eurosceptic party, but rose to its current strength and representation in Germany’s national parliament after rightwingers took over and switched its focus to opposing Islam and immigration.

Trump Has the Democrats Cornered
[American Thinker] No sooner had the Democrats taken back the majority in the House of Representatives than they proved their harshest critics correct ‐ the party no longer concerns itself with the interests of the American people. And by refusing to provide a dime for a physical barrier on our border, they did it in the starkest terms possible.

Led by far-left Nancy Pelosi, who held off a challenge to her leadership from the even farther left, the House Democrats promptly put themselves in the position of being seen taking the side of foreigners entering the country illegally over the security and economic prosperity of American citizens. They reduced themselves to the absurd position that "walls don't work."

I'm not one who necessarily believes that President Trump is a master negotiator or is playing 3D chess. But whether by design or because of pressure from his restive base, he now has the winning hand to build his wall and go on to re-election in 2020.

What's important now is that Trump plays his winning hand and resists the growing calls from the opposition media and cheap-labor Republicans to compromise with Nancy and Chuck. Doing so would just throw them a lifeline. Instead, Trump should use the power granted presidents by Congress, declare a national emergency, and begin construction of the wall.

There needs to be a top-to-bottom reform of immigration laws and the means of enforcement. Sanctuary cities and states needs to stop. DACA/DAPA needs to go. Overstayed visas need to go. Illegal immigration needs to go.

Dems struggling to help low-wage contractors harmed by shutdown
[The Hill] Democrats are struggling to come up with a way to provide back pay for low-wage contractors losing income because of the partial shutdown, a complicated process that hasn’t been tackled during previous government closures.

Contracted maintenance workers, cleaners, security guards and cafeteria staff at government buildings are among the hardest hit by the shutdown, which began Dec. 22.

Unlike the hundreds of thousands of affected federal employees who often receive back pay after a shutdown ends, low-wage contractors are not afforded compensation once the government reopens.

While President Trump is expected to sign legislation that would eventually give back pay to federal workers, even ensuring similar compensation after future shutdowns, contractors are not covered in that bill.

Senate Democrats say they are looking for a solution, but it’s proving to be a surprisingly tricky problem to fix.

"That’s putting it mildly. It’s not easy," said Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), who represents a state with thousands of federal workers and contractors.

Government contractors can cover anything from outsourced services for agencies, such as cafeteria service at federal office buildings, to major off-site projects. Lawmakers say they want to help low-wage workers who are shut out of work while doing so in a way that doesn’t pad the pockets of higher-wage contractors who can more easily withstand the financial strain of a shutdown.

Figuring out exactly how to get the money to employees is no easy task, according to legislators.

Jeane Kirkpatrick's 1979 Warning on ‘Dictatorships and Double Standards' Shows America How to Win Against China
BLUF:
[Breitbart] As Kirkpatrick wrote, "It is this belief which induces the Carter administration to participate actively in the toppling of non-Communist autocracies while remaining passive in the face of Communist expansion."

Kirkpatrick thus put her finger on a central and enduring aspect of liberalism: namely, the instinct to focus intensely on the small flaws of friends, while being blind to the larger flaws of foes. She derided this liberal impulse as a formula for "self-abasement and apology." And we might add that this mindset never seems to change‐hence, decades later, Barack Obama’s notorious "apology tours."

At its root, such thinking seems based on the idea that if a foreign government chooses to ally itself with the U.S., then that government can’t be much good. Why not? Because, as liberals like to believe, the U.S. isn’t so good, either. And this attitude, Kirkpatrick added, was a form of "masochism."

Indeed, when Kirkpatrick’s article appeared, the Carter administration was meekly watching as a string of allied governments were being overthrown, including those of Somalia, Afghanistan, Nicaragua, and Iran.

In each instance, we might add, the Soviets were active on the other side‐sometimes in a big way, sometimes in a lesser way. And just a few years earlier, Moscow had helped to engineer communist victories in Vietnam, Cambodia, Angola, and Mozambique. This was the reality of the Cold War‐the Russians were playing for keeps.

600 evacuated from ISIS holdout in eastern Syria
[IsraelTime] On Saturday, more than 600 people were evacuated from the remaining IS holdout in eastern Syria, a monitor said, as US-backed fighters prepare for a final assault on the area.

"Starting the long overdue pullout from Syria while hitting the little remaining ISIS territorial caliphate hard, and from many directions. Will attack again from existing nearby base if it reforms," Trump said.

"Russia, Iran and Syria have been the biggest beneficiaries of the long term US policy of destroying ISIS in Syria ‐ natural enemies. We also benefit but it is now time to bring our troops back home. Stop the ENDLESS WARS!"

Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights head Rami Abdel Rahman said that several dozen jihadist fighters were among those evacuated to areas held by the Kurdish-Arab alliance.

Abdel Rahman said some 16,000 people, including 760 IS fighters, have fled the area since the start of December, though this marked the first time the SDF and the coalition provided buses, suggesting a deal struck between the warring sides.

CIVILIANS STILL TRAPPED
The United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
said Friday that overall some 25,000 people have fled the violence over the last six months as the die-hard jihadists have battled to defend their dwindling bastions.

An estimated 2,000 civilians remain trapped in the area around the town of Hajin, the United Nations said.null

The US-led coalition on Saturday fired over 20 missiles against jihadist positions, the Observatory said.

Senator Durbin: Senators need 'ironclad, rock-bottom assurances' on Mueller probe from AG nominee
[Politico] Lawmakers need "ironclad, rock-bottom assurances" from attorney general nominee William Barr that he will fairly oversee special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Sunday.

"I’m worried about it," Durbin told host George Stephanopoulos during an interview on ABC’s "This Week."

"I mean, clearly he’s a good lawyer, no question, but when it comes to this delicate political situation ‐ the power of the presidency, whether this investigation is warranted ‐ Bill Barr had better give us some ironclad, rock-bottom assurances in terms of his independence and his willingness to step back and let Mueller finish his job," Durbin said.

Barr, who previously served as head of the Justice Department under President George H.W. Bush, is scheduled to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday and Wednesday for his confirmation hearings.

Democratic lawmakers on that panel are expected to ask the nominee about a memorandum he wrote to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein last year criticizing Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and potential coordination between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.

In the memo, Barr said Mueller’s inquiry into possible obstruction of justice by the president was "fatally misconceived."

Trump nominated Barr in December following the departure of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. In the interim, Matthew Whitaker, Sessions’ former chief of staff, has served as acting attorney general.

Backed by U.S. and French artillery strikes, the Syrian Democratic Forces managed to capture the small town of Abu Badran this evening after scoring a big advance earlier in the day.

According to reports from eastern Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Democratic Forces have now reached the outskirts of al-Sousah, which is the Islamic State’s last major stronghold in the eastern Euphrates region.

Once the Syrian Democratic Forces capture al-Sousah, the Islamic State will be forced to withdraw to the last two towns under their control in this Euphrates pocket.

Inter-rebel civil war in Idlib is major victory for Syrian Army
[AlMasdar] The recent inter-rebel civil war in the Idlib Governorate has proven to be a major victory for the Syrian military and their allies as the jihadist takeover of the province allows for the government to resume plans for a northwestern Syria offensive.

Speaking to al-Masdar News from the government stronghold of Mhardeh, an officer from the National Defense Forces (NDF) said the recent Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
expansion in the Idlib and Aleppo provinces has only increased the Russian pressure on their Ottoman Turkish allies to remove these jihadist combatants.

"Russia is watching the conflict in Idlib very closely and pressuring The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
to put an end to the terrorist presence," the NDF officer told al-Masdar News.

"There are already many Russians here (Mhardeh) and they keep sending more soldiers each day," he continued.

It has been no coincidence that the Syrian Arab Army has been amassing forces across the Idlib-Hama axis since Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham captured Jabal Shashabo and the eastern region of the al-Ghaab Plain from the Ottoman Turkish-backed National Liberation Front
...the Turkic paramilitaries intended to replace with their native jihadi ferocity all the highly trained Turkish soldiers Sultan Erdogan I the much beloved has jailed in the last few years for not worshipping the ground he walks upon. The Uighurs and so forth who did not join Al Nusra or ISIS seem to have ended up here...
(NLF); they will likely continue to build up their forces in a bid to force Turkey to either withdraw from their observation posts or expel the jihadist rebels.

With Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham eyeing the last three major cities (Saraqib, Ma’arat al-Nu’man, Ariha) under NLF control in Idlib, the entire opposition-held part of the province could soon be under the authority of the jihadist rebels.

Syrian Army allegedly deploys to northern Manbij
[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has allegedly deployed to the northern part of Manbij, which is near the front-lines with the Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the military is currently conducting patrols around the northern countryside of Manbij.

As a result of this move, the Syrian Arab Army is now positioned all over the Manbij countryside; however, they still do not have any presence inside the city.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are currently in full control of Manbij, despite constant threats from the Ottoman Turkish regime.

‘I Will Kill You and Eat Your Corpses': Deported Radical Imam Told Prison Guards
[Breitbart] Tunisian radical imam Mahmoud Jebali, who is set for deportation after coming to Italy as an illegal immigrant, threatened to kill prison officers.

The 31-year-old imam came to Italy illegally through the port in Lampedusa and was well-known to police having committed several violent crimes in the past. Italian authorities initially jailed him on a conviction for robbery but were finally able to expel him to Tunisia this week, Il Giornale reports.

While in a prison in Padua, the Tunisian is said to have become a leader among the radical Muslims with an officer from the Central Investigation Unit of the Penitentiary Police (NIC) saying, "He had never had a quiet attitude, he was controversial and arrogant with the agents, he had begun to intensify his religious practice so much that he became a charismatic leader for other Muslim prisoners."

Nuclear chief says Iran exploring new uranium enrichment
[IsraelTimes] The head of Iran’s nuclear program said the Islamic Theocratic Republic has begun "preliminary activities for designing" a modern process for 20-percent uranium enrichment for its 50-year-old research reactor in Tehran, signaling new danger for the nuclear deal.

The comment on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
from Ali Akbar Salehi increases the pressure on the international community as 20-percent enrichment would mean Iran has abandoned the terms of the 2015 atomic accord.

US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...

...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
inspectors say Iran continues to comply with the deal’s terms, which limits enrichment to 3.5 percent.

Salehi said "we are at the verge" of being ready, without elaborating in his remarks.

The US donated the reactor to Iran in 1967.

Dutch PM criticised after calling out 'white wine sipping elites'
[Al Jazeera] Mark Rutte said 'white wine sipping elites in Amsterdam' are not giving US President Trump a fair chance.

Rutte made the comments during an appearance on Buitenhof, a weekly TV show focused on Dutch politics that aired on Sunday.

"In this world, international structures are absolutely necessary, but sometimes it p***** me off when I hear white wine sipping elites in Amsterdam saying 'well, Trump, he is so wrong'," Rutte said.

"Why don't we make use of his presence, because he brings to attention the parts that aren't great about multilateralism, even though I am a supporter of that because the Netherlands are dependant on that same multilateralism," he added.

Shortly before those comments, Rutte also mentioned the "elites in Amsterdam" in relation to climate goals.

Stacey Abrams ‘Wouldn't Oppose' Non-Citizens, Minors Voting in Local Elections
[Free Beacon] In a new interview on PBS, former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey
"Tank"
Abrams (D.) said she’s open to non-citizens and minors voting in municipal elections.

Margaret Hoover, host of PBS’s "Firing Line," asked Abrams about progressive cities such as San Francisco where non-citizens can vote in local elections. Abrams said "there’s a big difference between municipal and state and federal" elections, and the larger democratic norms in the U.S. aren’t damaged by non-citizens voting on local matters.

"I’m not arguing for it or against it, but I will say having been deputy city attorney, the granularity of what cities decide is so specific as to, I think, allow people to be participants in the process without it somehow undermining our larger democratic ethic that says that you should be a citizen to be a part of the conversation," Abrams said.

Hoover pressed Abrams on whether she supports the idea, and she said she "wouldn’t oppose it."

During her 2018 campaign for governor of Georgia, Abrams told supporters there would be a "blue wave" of Democratic victories fueled by many people, including "those who are documented and undocumented." At the time, the Washington Free Beacon contacted her campaign for comment and did not hear back.

Sudan Opposition Call for More Protests 'To Shake the Tyrant's Throne'
[All Africa] The recently established Sudanese Professionals Association, the Sudan Call (an alliance of armed movements, civil society organizations, the National Consensus Forces coalition of opposition parties) and the opposition Unionist Parties are stepping-up their calls for protests against the Sudanese government headed by President Omar al Bashir.

They urged the people to continue the demonstrations until the overthrow of the regime.

In a statement on Friday, they called on all Sudanese to participate in "the march for the deaders" - those who have been killed by security forces during the demonstrations that started four weeks ago - to be held today. The march will commence at the central bus station in Khartoum and move to Khartoum North.

MARCH OF FREEDOM AND CHANGE
The statement also called on the Sudanese people to embark on the next "March of Freedom and Change" on Thursday, which will simultaneously take place in Khartoum and a number of other cities in order "to shake the tyrant's throne".

White House ordered plans prepared for Iran strike – report
[IsraelTimes] ’Shocked’ Pentagon acceded to request after Baghdad mortar attack in September that US blamed on Tehran-backed militias, Wall Street Journal says.

Following a September mortar attack near the US embassy in Baghdad that Washington blamed on Iran, US National Security Adviser John Bolton and the National Security Council he leads requested that the Pentagon provide options for striking Iran, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

The Pentagon did so, though the report said it was not clear what became of those plans and how close such a potential strike actually was, or if US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
was even aware of the exchange.

Still, officials in the Pentagon and State Department were said to have been shocked by the offhand nature of the request ‐ to provide plans for military action against a major regional power in response to a minor attack that caused no casualties.
This is the same Pentagon that has plans on file to invade Canada, should that ever be needed? I’m shocked that they would be shocked.
"It definitely rattled people," a former bigwig in the administration told the paper. "People were shocked. It was mind-boggling how cavalier they were about hitting Iran."
Cavalier. Take note, Mad Mullahs.
A front man for the NSC told the paper that the council "coordinates policy and provides the president with options to anticipate and respond to a variety of threats."

Bolton is known for his particularly hawkish stances, and prior to his appointment as national security adviser had advocated preemptive strikes against North Korea and war with Iran.
Did he indeed? Please do take note, Mad Mullahs. You too, Pudge.
In September he warned Iran of "hell to pay" and "serious consequences" if it acts against the US, using some of the most aggressive language employed by administration officials in recent decades.
Aggressive language with a Pentagon plan to back them...
He was also a major voice inside the George W. Bush administration in favor of the 2003 Iraq invasion. In the past he has also advocated for Israel bombing Iran to curtail its nuclear ambitions.
We’re gonna try to hold him back, guys, but he’s awfully excited. Y’all please, please don’t do anything to set him off, ‘k?
His combative approach to global conflict was previously seen as somewhat mitigated by the moderating voice of James Mattis, but the US defense secretary’s resignation last month has opened the door to more hardline policies by the administration.
Someone is messaging for all he, or she, is worth. Let us hope the Mad Mullahs — and Pudge — are clever enough to notice.
The mortar attack in Baghdad, on September 7, saw three shells hit the ultra-secure green zone, which houses Iraqi authorities and the US embassy.

Washington blamed militias supported by Iran, and said it would "respond swiftly and decisively in defense of American lives," though no action by US forces since has been directly linked to that attack.
But now General Mattis is not there to hold him back. Seriously, guys — worry.

Sudanese Police Fire Tear Gas At Khartoum, Darfur Rallies Against President Omar Al-Bashir
[All Africa] Police used tear gas on Sunday to disperse thousands of protesters who gathered for the fourth week to demand the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. The Ansarullah movement said that Thursday’s drone attack came in response to the continued aggression and blockade by the Saudi-backed forces, and repeated Saudi Arclight airstrikes which have put a UN-brokered peace agreement in the strategic port city of Hudaydah in jeopardy.

According to the agreement, the Houthi fighters, who are in control of Hudaydah, and Yemen’s former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi’s armed militia together with Saudi-led forces ‐ who have placed the city under a tight siege since June ‐ must withdraw from the port and hand it over to UN observers.

Europe
French jihadist’s DNA, fingerprints were on Brussels museum attack weapons
[IsraelTimes] Mehdi Nemmouche accused of being the first Syrian jihad veteran to carry out an attack in Europe, faces life sentence if convicted of 2014 shooting that killed 4.

A Frenchie on trial for shooting dead four people at a Jewish museum in Brussels left his fingerprints and DNA on the weapons used in the terror attack, prosecutors said Friday.

Mehdi Nemmouche, 33, listened to the case unfolding against him on the second day of his trial for the cold-blooded murders in the Belgian capital on May 24, 2014.

"Little by little they are putting the puzzle together," said lawyer Guillaume Lys of a French terror victims association which is a civil party to the trial.

Both Nemmouche and Nacer Bendrer, a fellow Frenchie aged 30 who allegedly supplied the weapons, face life in prison if convicted of charges of terrorist murder.

Reading the charge sheet, a prosecutor told the Brussels criminal court that Sherlocks lifted Nemmouche’s fingerprints from the barrel of the pistol he used in the museum attack.

The prosecutor added they also found his DNA on a Kalashnikov rifle, the second weapon used.

Both were found in Nemmouche’s possession when he was tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
upon arriving on a bus from Brussels in the southern French port of Marseille six days after the attack, Sherlocks say.

The prosecutor added Sherlocks found gunpowder residue on a blue jacket among his belongings. The museum shooter was seen wearing a similar jacket.

Investigators also studied videos from a laptop found in his possession where they heard an "imperious and guttural" voice claiming responsibility for the killings, the prosecution said.

Experts identified the voice as Nemmouche’s, it added.

Four French journalists who were taken hostage in Syria in 2013 also attributed the voice to Nemmouche, who they allege was one of their jailers, the prosecution said.

The trial is due to resume on Tuesday when Nemmouche’s lawyers present their defense strategy and their client takes the stand for questioning.

The case is the first allegedly carried out on European soil by a jihadist returning from Syria.

At least 16 Hamas members killed in November firefight, IDF chief says
More dead Hamasniks? I can live with that.
[IsraelTimes] Gadi Eisenkot also says 40-60 Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, people were maimed, as the IDF had to use considerable force to extricate troops in undercover operation that went awry.

Israel’s army chief said 16-20 members of the Hamas terror group were killed in a firefight in November when an IDF special forces operation in Gazoo went awry, and not seven, as had previously been believed. An Israeli officer was also killed in the November incident, and a second Israeli soldier was badly injured.

Outgoing IDF chief-of-staff Gadi Eisenkot said in a television interview broadcast by Hadashot news on Saturday night that the IDF had to use considerable force to extricate its troops from Gazoo when the November 11 undercover operation ran into problems.

"Sixteen to 20 Hamas people were killed. Forty to 60 were maimed," he said, noting that there was "wide use of force" in order to save the troops.

Previously, Paleostinian officials said seven Hamas button men, including a local commander, were killed in the firefight after the Israeli troops were exposed.

While the raid was not botched, he clarified, mistakes were made, and the IDF was learning the relevant lessons. He also said there were "heroic" actions by soldiers involved.

A Channel 10 report said the failure of the operation caused harm not only to the IDF "but also to other Israeli organizations."

The interview with Eisenkot was recorded several days ago, but was broadcast soon after Hamas held a presser in Gazoo at which it unveiled what it said was video surveillance footage surrounding the Israeli special forces raid.

The terror group also offered a $1 million reward for information that would lead to the identities of the special forces team.

The November 11 operation, details of which the Israeli military has kept largely under gag order, turned deadly when the undercover soldiers were spotted near Khan Younis, in the southern Gazoo Strip. The incident prompted Hamas to vow Dire Revenge and led to the deadliest escalation between the two sides since the 2014 war. The Israeli military censor again placed a gag order on some of the claims made by Hamas on Saturday.

Abdullah, Sisi: A Palestinian state should be established within 1967 borders
[Ynet] Jordan’s King Abdullah and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi said Sunday during their meeting in Amman that the renewal of negotiations talks between Israel and the Paleostinians is of the utmost importance.
It would be, if the Palestinians were willing to negotiating a peace treaty in good faith, instead of a hudna in bad faith.
"Negotiations should be based on the two-state solution and the Arab peace initiative, aiming to reach a fair solution, which honors the Paleostinians' legal right to establish a state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital," the two leaders said in a statement.
Given that none of those things are going to happen, what is there to negotiate other than Palestinian surrender?
In addition, Abdullah and Sisi discussed efforts to end regional crises in Syria, Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and Libya.

Hamas to 'intensify confrontation' if Israeli military attacks besieged Gaza Strip
[PRESSTV] The Paleostinian resistance movement Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®, has held the Tel Aviv regime responsible for the ongoing escalation in the blockaded Gazoo Strip, warning that the movement "will intensify the confrontation with Israel" in the coastal sliver if the Israeli military launches new attacks against the enclave.

"The Israeli occupation [regime] bears the consequences of continuing to commit its follies against peaceful protesters and deliberately killing them in cold blood as well as bombing sites of resistance," Hamas front man Fawzi Barhoum said in a statement on Sunday.

He further noted that the escalation of situation in Gazoo and "playing with fire" will never led to security for Israel and its people.

The statement came after Israeli military aircraft carried out several Arclight airstrikes against multiple locations across the besieged Gazoo Strip late on Saturday.

Paleostinian Ma'an news agency reported that Israeli warplanes fired at least one missile towards a military site belonging to Hamas east of Gazoo City.

Two other sites were targeted, one in the town of Beit Lahiya in the northern Gazoo Strip, and another in the city of Khan Yunis south of the enclave.

The money, which was supposed to be transferred into Gazoo last week, was halted after a booby-trapped model airplane was flown into southern Israel from the strip with the help of balloons.

Thousands attend funeral for Kashmir rebel commander
[PRESSTV] Thousands of mourners gathered in disputed Kashmire on Sunday, January 13, for the funeral of a commander of pro-independence fighters, Zeenatul Islam, who was killed in a battle with government forces.

Islam and another fighter were killed in a gunbattle with Indian troops late on Saturday. Police said further festivities erupted on Sunday after government forces in the southern Shopian area tried to stop mourners from attending the funeral, which led to injuries to at least 16 people.

Most Kashmiris support the pro-independence cause that the territory be united either under Pak rule or as an independent country while also participating in civilian street protests against Indian control.

India and Pakistain each claim the divided territory of Kashmire in its entirety. Pro-independence fighters have been combating Indian control since 1989.

Zimbabwe Faces Fresh Protests Amid Collapsing Economy
[All Africa] Zim-bob-we is set for a new wave of public protests following a deepening economic crisis marked by closure of companies and skyrocketing prices of basic commodities, among them fuel.

This past weekend, President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced a threefold increase in the price of fuel, a scarce commodity, to $3,11 a litre (R43,01) for diesel and $3,31 petrol (R45,9).

The prices are effective immediately.

Mnangagwa attributed the increases to persistent shortfalls in the fuel market, largely blaming rampant illegal currency and fuel trading activities.

"To curb continued misuse of fuel in the country, Government, through relevant departments which include its security structures, have started on a comprehensive audit of all fuel draw-downs with a view to establishing points of leakages," he said.

The hike comes amid a major company manufacturing basic commodities announcing its closure due to the scarcity of cash in the country.

Wilmar Group announced closure on Friday citing foreign currency deficits of US$11 million (R152,24 million) to service debts.

The country's largest beverage company, Delta Corporation, has threatened to shut down in the next three weeks if the economic situation did not improve.

The Zim-bob-we National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) said the fuel increases would worsen the hardships of the poverty-stricken majority.

Zim-bob-we battles unemployment estimated at 90 percent.

Nelson Chamisa, leader of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance, said the party would mobilise workers and party supporters to march against the rising cost of living.

Next to turn the tunnel-finding equipment on Israel’s border with Gazoo, after which it can be loaned to Egypt for their section of the border.
[IsraelTimes] Military announces discovery of final underground passage from Leb, the largest one found, believed to have been part of plan to send fighters to conquer northern Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces on Sunday declared that its effort to find and destroy Hezbollah cross-border attack tunnels was coming to an end, following the discovery of another such underground passage over the weekend.

"With the discover of this terror tunnel, the effort to locate the passages dug by Hezbollah that crossed the border into Israeli territory has been completed. The neutralization of this passage will be completed in the coming days," the army said in a statement.

Why Israel finally chose to end its ambiguity over Syria strikes
[Ynet] When the head of the army and the head of the government make clear claims of responsibility for attacking Iranian targets abroad, they are sending a clear message.

It was a weekend of revelations. Outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, in his farewell interviews, finally confirmed that the Israeli army has attacked thousands of targets in Syria. On Sunday, the prime minister revealed that Israel was responsible for the Friday night attack in Damascus. This is a calculated move. The Israeli decision to end the ambiguity of its attacks in Syria is based on events in Iran itself, where a lively debate has been going on for almost a year about the extent to which the Islamic Theocratic Republic should involve itself in conflicts outside its borders ‐ conflicts that also mean huge expenditure.

The supporters of Iranian interference throughout the Middle East ‐including assistance to Hezbollah, the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad

Venezuela opposition leader Juan Guaido briefly detained
[Al Jazeera] Venezuelan intelligence agents have released opposition leader and congress chief Juan Guaido after briefly detaining him on the way to a political rally, a congressional official has said.

A video posted on social media appears to show the moment Guaido was pulled from a car on a highway by the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) on Sunday as he was travelling out of the capital, Caracas.

While it was not possible to identify the individual in the video, his wife and opposition politicians said that he were tossed into the calaboose.

He was released about an hour later, they added.

At a rally shortly afterwards, Guaido told opposition supporters "the game has changed", the Rooters news agency reported.

"Here we are! We are not afraid!," Guaido said.

Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez told state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
the detention was an "irregular procedure" by rogue agents who wanted to help the opposition create a "media show," adding that the agents would face disciplinary action, Rooters reported.

The Lima Group - made up of a bloc of countries from the Americas including Brazil, Canada and Mexico - issued a statement condemning the "arbitrary detention".

Trump: US to 'devastate Turkey economically' if it attacks Syrian Kurds
[DW] In a Tweet on Sunday, President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
threatened a harsh response against The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
if it attacked US-allied Kurds in Syria. Ankara has pledged to eliminate Kurdish forces, which they consider terrorists.

US President Donald Trump has warned Turkey that it risks economic retaliation by the United States if it attacks Syrian Kurdish forces after the withdrawal of US troops from Syria.

"Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds," Trump wrote in a Tweet late on Sunday, without elaborating.

Trump's comments follow Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
's pledge to take action against the YPG, which Turkey considers a terrorist organization linked to the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) within Turkey.

The president also called for the creation of a 20-mile (30-kilometer) safe zone in Syria and said he did not want US-allied Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, to seek any confrontation with Ankara.

ABC's Karl: Sources Close to Mueller Say His Report ‘Almost Certain to Be Anti-Climactic'
[Breitbart] Sunday on ABC’s "This Week," ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl said his sources "interacting with" special counsel Robert Mueller’s team said Mueller’s forthcoming report was "almost certain to be anti-climactic."

Partial transcript as follows:

KARL: What I am getting is that this is all building up to the Mueller report and raising expectations of a bombshell report. And there have been expectations that have been building, of course, for over a year on this. But people who are closest to what Mueller has been doing, interacting with the special counsel caution me that this report is almost certain to be anti-climactic. If you look at what the FBI was investigating in that New York Times report, you look at what they were investigating, Mueller did not go anywhere with that investigation. He has been writing his report in real time through these indictments and we have seen nothing from Mueller on the central question of, was there any coordination, collusion, with the Russians in the effort to meddle in the elections? Or was there even any knowledge on the part of the president or anybody in his campaign with what the Russians were doing, there’s been no indication of that ...

STEPHANOPOULOS: They hadn’t laid that out yet in the indictments but how do things like the Trump Tower meeting with Russians, Don Jr., Paul Manafort, Paul Manafort giving polling data to Ukrainian oligarchs, the pursuit of a Trump Tower in Moscow. How does that fit into this theory?

KARL: What we’ve certainly seen over and over again is the people around the president, first of all, have been willing to lie to investigators, and had their own dealings with Russians, had their own agendas with Russians. And Manafort was trying to get paid for his work on behalf of Ukraine. Flynn had his own dealings. But it is not added up to anything of the central question, again, was there anybody ‐ was the Trump campaign aware of or coordinating with the Russians in their effort to meddle with the election. So far there’s been nothing on that and I’m led to believe don’t expect there’s going to be any.

Venezuela inflation of 23,000,000% by the end of this year
[ELUNIVERSAL] In the opinion of the firm Torino Economics, 2019 will be a year of deepening deterioration (already galloping of the economy), to such an extent that they determine that the "monetization of the deficit will continue to drive inflation, which will reach a figure close to 23,000,000%. "

In their first report of the year, they point out that there will be a "GDP contraction of 11.8%, for an accumulated fall of 51.8% since 2013."

They consider it "almost impossible" to apply measures for a "successful (economic) stabilization".

"Venezuela will continue to accumulate current account surpluses, given that it does not have access to external financing. These funds are destined to the payment of debts with China, Russia, holders of the Pdvsa 2020 bond and some ICSID arbitration processes such as the Gold Reserve, ConocoPhillips and Crystallex cases. We calculate that, in order to amortize these debts, the country paid $ 7.9 billion in 2018, which consumed a good part of the current account surplus of 2017, "they specify.

They extend that the accumulation of surpluses will be difficult after 2019, when the scarcity of foreign exchange due to the fall in oil production and the fall in prices begins to take effect.

"We expect exports to fall from $ 30.1 billion to $ 20.7 billion, a reduction of 31.2%." Maintaining the same surplus would require reducing imports by $ 10 billion, which is not possible, imports of goods and services will fall. $ 4.5 billion, according to Torino's projections, so the current account surplus will go from $ 5.7 billion in 2018 to just $ 2.4 billion this year.

"The implication of this is that Venezuela will be able to serve even less debt in 2019 than it could pay in 2018. In other words, excluding the possibility of a significant recovery in oil prices or production, we believe that Venezuela will go into default with some creditors who have so far found a way to pay them, "says the Torino Economics report.

According to AN figures, inflation closed in 2018 at 1,689,488.2%.

Hamas starts broadcasting into Israel, with a little help from Hezbollah
[IsraelTimes] Gazoo terror group’s al-Aqsa radio station reportedly transmitting from tower on Lebanese border, can be heard as far south as Tel Aviv.

Al-Aqsa radio, the Gazoo-based station run by the Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", terror group, has reportedly begun broadcasting into Israel through a powerful broadcasting tower set up along the Israeli-Lebanese border.

The tower was put up in cooperation with the Iran-backed Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, an Israeli satellite imagery company said.

It is located across the border from the Israeli village of Zar’it, near the Lebanese villages of Marwahin and Ramyeh.

Nissan Cohen, CEO of Sat View, told Army Radio on Sunday that "three media outlets turned to us and said there was something disrupting [their broadcasts] on frequency 101.6 [FM]. So we went to check. We followed [the broadcasts] north, got to the Lebanese border and realized it’s coming from there."

The tower near Marwahin was sending a "very, very powerful" signal, Cohen said.
...a problem very easily fixed. They should have applied for a broadcasting license.
According to the report, the signal was being received by radio listeners as far south as Tel Aviv.

The report came as the IDF announced Sunday that its effort to find and destroy Hezbollah cross-border attack tunnels was coming to an end, following the discovery of another such underground passage over the weekend very close to the believed location of the broadcasting tower, near the village of Ramyeh.

Palestinian arrested for allegedly shooting at Border Police base in November
[IsraelTimes] Suspect accused of attacking post near Abu Dis, with no casualties; 2 coppers lightly injured by rocks during Ramallah operation

Border Police overnight Saturday nabbed
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
a Paleostinian man suspected of firing at a guard post at a Border Police base near East Jerusalem.

The suspect, a resident of the town of Abu Dis, east of Jerusalem, was arrested near the Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Aumim.

The gunfire incident in which he is suspected occurred on November 27, 2018, and did not cause any casualties.

The suspect, in his 30s, has evaded several previous attempts to arrest him.

Last week four pipe bombs were hurled at the base. Only one went kaboom!, causing no damage or injuries. Officials said they were still seeking those involved.

Also overnight, two Border Policemen were lightly maimed by rocks thrown at them during an arrest operation in Ramallah.

A front man said hundreds of rioters gathered and attacked soldiers, burning tires and hurling rocks. Troops responded with riot-dispersal measures.

The maimed soldiers were taken to a Jerusalem hospital and later released.

On Friday a Paleostinian man tried to carry out a stabbing attack near the West Bank city of Hebron and was shot and critically injured by troops, the army said.

The Israel Defense Forces said the attacker was "neutralized" after attempting to stab soldiers at an army post near the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba, and was taken to the hospital.

Bangladesh
Women’s education: Hefazat chief Shafi claims his remarks were distorted
[Dhaka Tribune] Hefajat-e-Islam
...a madrassa-based false nose and mustache of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, formed in 2010 to protest against secular education. In 2011 demonstrated violentyly against women's rights and in 2013 held large rallies demanding capital punishment of Shahbag Square protesters and banning women working outside the home...
chief Shah Ahmed Shafi has claimed that his statement regarding women’s education has been "distorted," claiming that he is against the co-education system and not against women’s education.

His call made on Friday about not allowing girls to study had sparked widespread controversy, drawing criticisms from different quarters including government ministers.

In a media statement issued on Sunday, known Islamic hardliner Shafi urged the mass media not to "distort" his comments when publishing them. "Because that leads to confusion and misunderstanding among the general people... Do not spread lies against anyone."

"Reaching a conclusion without understanding someone’s remarks is a crime. And using a part of a remark for one’s own interest is a bigger crime," he said in the statement.

Shafi also claimed that a vested quarter was out to desperately make him sound controversial. "They are trying to present me as a person who is against women and women’s education.

"I have responded to that. Read that and try to understand. Do not spread lies," he said.

"I am saying again ‐ create a safe environment for women’s education and ensure security of their lives and honour. No one should send their daughters to an unsafe environment."

He said that his remarks were made in the backdrop of rapes and murders of women around the country that are taking place every day. These crimes and discrimination against women would not stop if people do not have any morale, he added.

The chief of fundamentalist Islamist group Hefazat also added: "The summary of what I said is that they [girls or women] should wear burkas if they go to colleges and universities for higher education and their teachers should be women too."

REMARKS AND REBUTTAL
On Friday, the 99-year-old had asked his followers to take oath to restrain girls from studying at schools and colleges, while addressing an annual religious gathering at al-Jamaatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasa, also known as Hathazari Madrasa, in Chittagong.

"Do not let girls study at schools and colleges. At best, you can allow them to study up to fourth or fifth grade. If you let them study any more... You have seen in the newspapers that... If you educate your girl up to ninth, tenth, MA, BA levels then that girl will not remain yours.

"If you educate your girls, other men will snatch them away," he said.

After media reports on his remarks led to controversy and harsh criticism, Shafi on Saturday had issued another statement, where had claimed that his comments were published partially in different media outlets.

He said: "In my speech, I tried to say that girls should not be sent to any educational institution which goes any against basic tenets of Islam. You should bear in mind that Islam is a complete code, which encompasses every aspect of life. Islam encouraged girls' education and every one of you knows that Bibi Ayesha (R) was a renowned interpreter of Hadith. If she did not receive education, then we would remain deprived from many valuable sayings of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him)."

Labour to seek no-confidence vote ‘soon,’ Corbyn says as Brexit day nears
[PRESSTV] With only 10 weeks before the punitive Brexit day, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says the party will "soon" call a no-confidence motion in the government of Prime Minister Theresa May.

The party would take the measure if politicians reject Prime Minister Theresa May's divorce deal with the EU in a vote on Tuesday, Corbyn told BBC One on Sunday.

"We will table a motion of no confidence in the government at a time of our choosing, but it’s going to be soon, don’t worry about that," he said.

Pressed on the timing by the host, Andrew Marr, Corbyn added, "We’ll have the vote and then you’ll see."

#4  Note the subplot. G36 is select fire, that is it is an actual "assault rifle" that can be fired fully automatic or semi. By labeling the G36 as "semiautomatic" (about 37 times in the article) they provide fifth column support for the idea that semi's are "assault rifles" and should be banned.

Buy your ammo now. Avoid the rush.

Yikes! Scientist James Watson loses titles after genetic claims over race
Scientist who shared in discovery of DNA's double helix now discovered to know absolutely nothing about DNA's double helix.
[BBC] Nobel Prize-winning American scientist James Watson has been stripped of his honorary titles after repeating comments about race and intelligence.

In a TV programme, the pioneer in DNA studies made a reference to a view that genes cause a difference on average between blacks and whites on IQ tests.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory said the 90-year-old scientist's remarks were "unsubstantiated and reckless".

Dr Watson had made similar claims in 2007 and subsequently apologised.

He shared the Nobel in 1962 with Maurice Wilkins and Francis Crick for their 1953 discovery of the DNA's double helix structure.

Dr Watson sold his gold medal in 2014, saying he had been ostracised by the scientific community after his remarks about race.

He is currently in a nursing home recovering from a car accident and is said to have "very minimal" awareness of his surroundings.

The evil twin might have done it. Dr. Bass (Dr. Bones) of "Body Farm" fame ran into a $hitstorm when he suggested that certain bone characteristics indicated race. However, this was not carried to extremes as with Dr. Watson. Can't deny the man's accomplishments although that is what is happening. A pox on PC.

#9  JohnQC, on the tv show Bones they routinely tell the race and sex by different bones. Not with 100% certainty but close enough to be meaningful.

The show is based on the real life work of a doctor who did the same thing and wrote a book about it. Who knows how far they stretch from reality as the show continues, hollywood is hollywood after all but still.

#10  Honorary Degrees show the vanity of the institution bestowing -- if they had a Monetary Gift attached they might mean something. "So what?" if they issue one, double "So What?" if they turn around and take it back.

The university town I live in had two stones featured prominently at the off ramp from the interstate showing that they were a "sister city" to a city in Mexico and a city in France. Some time during the War on Terror those stones quietly disappeared... Never heard the 'Why?' just saw that they had quietly disappeared. Fellowship seems easily lost.

UN monitor of Yemen’s truce exited agreed path: Houthis
[PRESSTV] Yemen’s Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
Ansarullah movement has boycotted a United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
(UN)-led ceasefire monitoring team in the war-ravaged country’s flashpoint city of Hudaydah, accusing the head of the team of pursuing "other agendas."

Houthis’ chief negotiator, Mohammed Abdulsalam, made the remarks on Twitter on Sunday, saying that retired Dutch Major General Patrick Cammaert, who was to chair the meeting, had "exited from the course of the agreement by implementing other agendas."

"It seems that the task is greater than his capabilities," he further said, referring to the Dutch general.

Cammaert is leading a UN joint committee tasked with overseeing a truce in the western city, a lifeline for the delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid.

In December, Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement and the country’s former Saudi-backed government signed an agreement for a ceasefire in Hudaydah during UN-brokered peace talks held in the Swedish capital of Stockholm. Martin Griffiths, the UN special envoy for Yemen, mediated the negotiations.

According to the agreement, the Houthi fighters, who are in control of Hudaydah, and Yemen’s former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi’s armed militia together Saudi-led forces ‐ who have placed the city under a tight siege since June ‐ must withdraw from the port and hand it over to UN observers.

"If Griffiths does not address the issue, it is going to be difficult to discuss any other matter," Abdulsalam added, without elaborating.

According to the UN, the fragile ceasefire has largely held since it came into force on December 2018, but there have been delays in the agreed withdrawal of the Houthis and Hadi’s forces.

The limited ceasefire and withdrawal, if implemented, could offer a potential breakthrough in a nearly four-year Saudi-led war that has brought Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
to the brink of starvation and created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Africa Subsaharan
Southern Africa: SADC Urges All-inclusive Government in DRC
[All Africa] His Excellency Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, President of the Republic of Zambia says given the strong objections to the provisional results of the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
(DRC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has called on all politicians to consider a negotiated political settlement for an all-inclusive government.

And SADC encourages all stakeholders in the DRC elections to pursue a negotiated political settlement for a government of national unity.

In his capacity as chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, President Lungu says he has spoken to leaders of SADC and the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).

President Lungu has also spoken to the provisionally proclaimed winner, Mr. Felix Tsisekedi and other stakeholders within and outside of the DRC.

Rodriguez announces the dismissal of Sebin officials who arrested Guaid
[ELUNIVERSAL] The vice president for Communication, Tourism and Culture, Jorge Rodriguez, said Sunday that the coppers who enjugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
the president of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, will be dismissed.

He argued that the detention was done arbitrarily and the agents will be subjected to severe disciplinary measures.

In a telephone call transmitted by Venezolana de Televisión, Rodríguez stressed that it was an irregular procedure by officials of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin).

Rodríguez rejected the dissemination of false information and denounced the installation of "false positives". He said that all this is part of a "media show" that seeks to alter "the peace of the Republic."

Hours before, Fabiana Rosales, wife of Juan Guaidó, denounced through his Twitter account that the president of the National Assembly was arrested this morning by officials of the Sebin, when he was going to an open meeting in La Guaira. The arrest took place at the El Limón neighborhood, on the Caracas - La Guaira highway.
