-Lurid Crime Tales-
Andrew McCarthy at National Review: Prosecute the Rioters
[National Review] rom time to time over the years, the eminent historian Daniel Pipes has lamented that treason, not just as a crime but as a concept, appears defunct in the West. The question of bringing treason charges against jihadists has been raised from time to time.

Often its very asking proves Dr. Pipes’ point: Most radical Islamic terrorists are not American citizens; as to them, treason is not a cognizable offense because traitorous conduct is central to the crime. Even against American jihadists, a treason charge is of dubious usefulness.

The 1996 overhaul of federal counterterrorism law codified crimes tailored to terrorism that are easier to prove than treason. The aim of an indictment in a national-security case should be the surest route to the severest sentence.

The point is not to teach a civics lesson, regrettable as our education system’s default has been in that regard. Yet what is true of treason is not true of sedition. There are charges to bring against those who would destroy our society. They should be brought. Case in point: the University of California at Berkeley. As our National Review editorial observed in the aftermath of this week’s Berkeley rioting, "there is within the American Left an increasingly active element that is not only deeply illiberal -- fundamentally opposed to free speech -- but also openly violent." I’d further contend that the problem is not confined to this increasingly active element, the Left’s "progressives in a hurry."

Whether it is Berkeley or Benghazi, it is standard operating procedure among the most influential, most allegedly mainstream Democratic politicians to rationalize rioting as mere "protest." In their alternative reality, violence in the name of sedition is "free speech" -- a passionate expression of political dissent -- while the actual political speech they so savagely suppress is the atrocity. There is no mystery about how we got to this dark place. Violent rampaging was the coming-of-age rite of the New Left.

ObamaCare Good/Bad Politics
An estimated 9.2 million people signed up via Healthcare.gov by the Jan. 31 open enrollment deadline, according to the update from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The data also showed that many faced 25 percent premium hikes on average and that there were fewer options.

While that may have been anticipated, the uncustomary and highly politicized wording in a Trumplican government statement was not. It led to furious responses from some former White House officials and others.

"Obamacare has failed the American people, with one broken promise after another," said current Health and Human Services spokesman Matt Lloyd in a statement.
On the other hand,

That prompted, Benjamin Wakana, who held Lloyd's position until two weeks ago, to fire back. "That statement is insane," he told CNBC.
Not "incorrect". Not "misguided". Not "politically motivated". So far out of my comfort zone it must be "insane".
"Considering the (Affordable Care Act) covered 20 million more people than any Republican plan."
And it was all free, too!

The Trump administration stopped outreach and pulled advertising for Obamacare over the past two weeks. "The sabotage efforts worked," Charles Gaba, an progressive independent analyst who has been tracking enrollment figures told U.S. News. "Impossible to prove causation, of course, but Healthcare.gov enrollment had been pacing last year's very closely until the final week."
Impossible, of course, but there - I said it anyway.

Judge Blocks Trump Travel Ban
The State Department reversed visa cancellations for foreigners Saturday after a federal judge's ruling temporarily lifted a ban on travel to the U.S. from certain countries.
The War on Trump continues.
The ruling triggered confusion in airports around the world as airlines began boarding flights bound for America and federal lawyers took steps to reinstate the ban.
Now thousands shall not be inconvenienced, but millions feel threatened.
The White House said it would try to get a court to reinstate the ban that prompted the State Department to cancel visas for 60,000 or more people from the affected countries, causing widespread confusion at airports when some travelers were detained and others sent back.

#1  This ruling is an outlier. 2 very liberal judges have already help most of the EO to be lawful, which it is. The problem is that activists are very good at selecting the right judge to get a TRO, even though you aren't supposed to be able to. I suspect that even the left wing 9th Circus will overturn.

Looking at the larger picture, 3 Supreme Court justices are getting on in years: Ginsburg = 83, Kennedy = 80 and Breyer is 78. Should Trump win a second term, he has a pretty good shot at replacing all three. Thomas (68) might even decide to retire during a Trump presidency.

Assuming a second term, and that Trump continues to do the right thing in his appointments, many of us on this board could live the rest of our lives knowing nothing but a conservative court.

Five E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes early warning and control aircraft arrive Japan
[UPI] The U.S. Navy is strengthening airborne radar and detection capabilities in the Asia-Pacific with five E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes early warning and control aircraft.

Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 125 arrived at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni on Thursday.

Japan's air self-defense force may also use the aircraft, Stripes Japan reported.

The E-2D "employs long-range radar and electronic communications capabilities to oversee the battle space and detect threats beyond the sensor range of other friendly units," a statement from the U.S. Navy read.

The aircraft was also described as the "digital quarterback" of the fleet, and includes an "all glass" tactical cockpit, an upgraded mission computer and data-link capabilities.

In response to reports of the deployment, China's Global Times stated Friday the E-2D are being placed in Japan in order to track Beijing's Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter.

Afghanistan
The Travel Ban Endangers Special Operations Forces
[Task & Purpose] Last year, retired Army Gen. David Petraeus ominously predicted that the divisive anti-Muslim rhetoric during the presidential election would not fade and would make our country less safe. This warning came to pass last week as President Donald Trump’s travel ban took effect on Friday afternoon and created the chaos across America’s major airports.

The immediate outcry was predictable and justified. It doesn’t require Petraeus’ experience to realize that labeling all citizens of certain Muslim countries as suspects helps jihadists recruit new members by pitching their struggle as a religious war between Islam and the West.

But what I fear more than the way this order aids groups like ISIS and al Qaeda are the short-term risks for our forces on the ground. Treating all citizens of Muslim nations like potential terrorists alienates our Muslim allies who are fighting terrorists with America today. Nowhere are these effects so palpable than with the special operations forces around the globe who interact with these allies on a day-to-day basis.

To understand these impacts of Trump’s order, it’s helpful to understand how special operations are conducted. The large majority of special operations involve working with a partner force that creates something we call a "force multiplier." For example, a small group of special operators will deploy to an austere environment far away from U.S. forces to equip and train locals to be better and more effective fighters. Doing so, this small team of 12 or fewer Americans "multiplies" their impact by creating seasoned fighters out of hundreds or thousands of local nationals. The enemy, instead of facing a small team of highly capable Americans, faces a much larger group with well-trained and equipped fighters using local intelligence.

Strategically, this yields a better return on investment for the U.S. military. For every special operations-trained team deployed, there are thousands of conventional forces that America isn’t putting at risk to accomplish the same goal. Simultaneously, this is the exit plan: By training partner forces to proficiency, we won’t need to help them one day.

When I was in Afghanistan, I was part of one of these units that trained, mentored, and led an elite unit of Afghan commandos on combat missions. We would spend weeks training hundreds of commandos to proficiency and then fought arm-in-arm with them on raids against Taliban insurgencies in the deserts and mountains of Afghanistan.

#5  A kind of Bizarro-Finlandization apparently is now a mainstream Western political doctrine.

We are witnessing a process by which a group of weak and failed countries strongly influences the policies of a a group of prosperous and overwhelmingly powerful countries, while allowing them to nominally keep their independence and political system.

Why shouldn't e.g. Russia and China conclude that the West has gone mad?

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iranians fear attacks and economic isolation as Trump gets tough
Many Iranians who dreamt of quiet, comfortable lives after a nuclear deal with world powers in 2015 are starting to worry for the first time in decades they might be bombed in their own homes.

Since taking office last month, US President Donald Trump has pledged to get tough with Iran, warning the Islamic Republic after its ballistic missile test on Sunday that it was playing with fire and all US options were on the table.

Analysts say those options could range from diplomacy to military action and some scared Iranians are even preparing escape plans, just as they did in the eight-year war with Iraq when Saddam Hussein's jets pounded Iranian towns and cities.

China lashes out at Mattis remarks on East China Sea islands
[ABC] The U.S. is putting regional stability in East Asia at risk, a Chinese spokesman said Saturday following remarks by President Donald Trump's defense secretary that a U.S. commitment to defend Japanese territory applies to an island group that China claims.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang on Saturday called on the U.S. to avoid discussion of the issue and reasserted China's claim of sovereignty over the tiny uninhabited islands, known in Japanese as the Senkaku and Chinese as Diaoyu.

The 1960 U.S.-Japan treaty is "a product of the Cold War, which should not impair China's territorial sovereignty and legitimate rights," Lu was quoted as saying in a statement posted on the ministry's website.

"We urge the U.S. side to take a responsible attitude, stop making wrong remarks on the issue involving the Diaoyu islands' sovereignty, and avoid making the issue more complicated and bringing instability to the regional situation," Lu said.

Economy
Tomorrow's Manufacturing Revolution
[MI Daily Update] Bioelectronics is as big a jump as ditching vacuum tubes.

President Trump says he will revive U.S. manufacturing through better trade deals and tax incentives. Others argue that America has entered a new "postmanufacturing" era. Sound familiar? In the 1970s, the U.S. had a stagnant economy, sluggish productivity, high unemployment and an auto industry threatened by the Japanese "juggernaut." Doomsday was nigh.

But with a big boost from the Reagan tax cuts and deregulation, entirely new domains of manufacturing emerged, breathing new life into the U.S. economy in the 1980s, ’90s and 2000s. Today, producing semiconductors and computing hardware is a $1.5 trillion-a-year global industry, comparable to automobile sales. And that unforeseen revolution gave birth to a whole new economy and tech giants like Intel, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Facebook.

What are the mandarins of economic forecasting missing today? Here are three examples, each as transformational as going from vacuum tubes to transistors to microchips.

Bioelectronics. Pliable, biocompatible microchips and sensors allow computing devices not only to be comfortably worn (think "smart" bandages) but also implanted in living tissue or widely distributed into the environment, enabling biological and medical advances as remarkable as silicon electronics.

Transient electronics. Digital devices that literally disappear on a schedule, or are consumable, will allow entirely new ways for sensing our environment as well as hyperprecise delivery of new kinds of therapeutics in specific areas of the body, organs and even cells.

Electroceuticals. These dust-sized, microscopic wireless sensors target nerves, areas of the brain and other human tissue to treat an array of medical conditions including chronic pain and infections.

Consider that the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded "for the design and synthesis of molecular machines." Like last century’s revolution in chemical and pharmaceutical production, today powerful physics-based algorithms, combined with....

Matt's Review Of 'The Somali Project' (and Video trailer)
[Feral Jundi] I finally got a chance to watch The Somali Project, which was originally called The Project. This documentary was purchased by The Vladar Company and the film is now available to buy or rent. With that said, I was able to rent the film through youtube, and it is fantastic! When you rent it, you get the film for 48 hours. You also have the choice to rent a High Definition version, and that is what I went with.

Now I had read about the film and how it did at the Tribeca Film festival, I blogged about it, and I watched the trailer. But I never got a chance to watch the whole thing. Here on the blog, I have also written about the Puntland Maritime Protection Force and about piracy off the coast of Somalia during the peak years of that problem. It was a horrible deal, with hundreds of folks taken hostage and just rotting away off the coast of Somalia in captured ships. My interest in the matter was getting armed guards on boats, so that these pirates would have friction at sea. On land, the PMPF was the answer to attacking the source of piracy.

'There are fascists on campus.' Protesters don't realize it's them, not Milo Yiannopoulos
[National Post] I suggest, as a corollary to Orwell’s prescient observation that (I’m paraphrasing) some things are so stupid that only an intellectual could believe them, that should you seek stupidity in depth and a full lock on all mental development, enroll in a prestige high-fee North American liberal university. Further, I hold that whatever debates may be underway about the targets of Orwell’s dystopian Nineteen Eighty-Four, the modern university is the only institution that has taken that noble work for use as a manual.

For where else are words turned quite upside down, flipped over to stand on their bruised heads and told to dance to the rigorous tunes of fanatics? For it is only on a university campus that simple, basic words are made by violence to take on their exact and opposite meanings: up is down, right is wrong, day is night, and anti-fascism is fascism.

A couple of nights ago the Twitter-banished, Trump supporter, Internet gadfly and author Milo Yiannopoulos was scheduled to give a talk at the (hilariously regarded) home of the Free Speech movement of the 1960s, Berkeley campus in Oceania, sorry, in California. If I were to characterize Yiannopoulos I’d put him down as a right-wing, more sophisticated version of Jon Stewart. He is certainly more clever. There is a relaxed quality to his goading of the politically correct hordes that Stewart’s more determined sneering never really achieved.

Milo doesn’t have a TV show (yet) but he gives talks and is on a campus tour. Naturally when he showed up at Berkeley a riot broke out. A little flavour of the evening may be gleaned from any number of sources: "Protesters armed with bricks and fireworks mounted an assault on the building hosting a speech by ... Milo Yiannopoulos." Another: "Several injuries have been reported and at least four banks have been vandalized after demonstrators marched away from the scene of a violent protest at the cancelled speaking event by ... speaker Yiannopoulos."

Beware The Values Cudgel
[Daily Caller] To manipulate Americans, politicians Before Trump have used the values cudgel. With respect to immigration, the idea is to impress upon gullible Americans that the world has a global Right of Return to the U.S. Fail to accept egalitarian immigration for all into America; and you are flouting the very essence of Americanism. (Or, to use liberal argumentation, you’re Hitler.)

In the Barack Obama universe, the carnage in Boston, Orlando, San Bernardino, Fort-Hood and Chattanooga dwarfs when compared to the importance of preserving "our values." (By which Obama means his values, Hillary Clinton’s values, Angela Merkel’s values, Sally Yates’s values, Chucky Schumer’s values, Jeff Bezos’s values, John McMussolini’s values, Lindsey Graham’s values.)

When a politician pules about "the values that make our country great," to quote Mrs. Clinton, chances are they mean multiculturalism, pluralism, wide-swung borders, Islam as peace, communities divided in diversity as a net positive, and the Constitution--it mandates all the above, just ask Ruth Bader Ginsburg--as a living, breathing, mutating philosophical malignancy.

For them, "protecting" the abstraction that is "our way of life" trumps the protection of real individual lives. "We must guard against a weakening of the values that make us who we are," dissembled Obama in the waning weeks before he was gone. The empty phrase is meant to make the sovereign citizen--you--forget that government’s most important role, if not its only role, is to protect individual life.

The Muslims have a speaker system to blast their Friday prayers at the New York airport. One Muslim speaker threaten "biggest uprising" and "resistance" if things don’t change.

Last week President Trump issued a temporary refugee travel ban from seven terrorist states.

Dem Congresswoman Calls Violent Riots at Berkeley a ‘Beautiful Sight'
[Free Beacon] Democratic Rep. Val Demings (Fla.) said on Thursday that the violent riots that took place at the University of California, Berkley the prior night were a "beautiful sight."

Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos, a vocal Donald Trump supporter, was scheduled to speak at UC Berkley on Wednesday night, but the event had to be canceled due to violent protests from students and other activists.

"The university said fires were set, including one caused by a firebomb that ignited a generator-powered spotlight, and commercial-grade fireworks were thrown at police," NBC News reported of the riots.

One witness reported seeing a large crowd yelling "No Trump, no Milo," at Sproul Plaza on the UC Berkley campus. A female Trump supporter was pepper-sprayed while giving an on-cmaera interview.

Demings applauded the violent protests that took place during a Capitol hill hearing.

"We have seen demonstrations‐and I think you already talked about that‐around the country. Young people at Berkeley protesting against this unconstitutional order," Demings said.

She then encouraged more young people to get involved in the protests.

"We encourage our young people to get involved‐I thought it was a beautiful site," Demings said.

Police treated six people for injuries from the riots, according to Berkeley.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russian embassy comes under attack in Damascus
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian Embassy in Damascus sustained damage after coming under mortar shelling on February 2 and 3, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

There were no reported injuries during the attack.

"On February 2 and 3, the Russian diplomatic compound in Syria came under mortar shelling twice. Aimed fire was conducted from the Jobar neighborhood controlled by terrorists," the ministry said. "One of the mines went kaboom! in the territory of the embassy compound between the office and residential buildings. Another mine went off some 20 meters off the main entryway to the embassy. No one was hurt but the shelling caused material damage."

"We resolutely condemn these terrorist attacks on the Russian diplomatic mission in Damascus," the ministry said. "We note that these treacherous attacks on our embassy were committed in conditions of the consolidating ceasefire with an obvious aim of breaking down cessation of hostilities and derailing efforts towards establishing political process."

"This crime cannot remain unpunished," the ministry stressed. "Russia’s principled policy of conducting uncompromising struggle against snuffies in Syria will be continued."

Moscow calls on "international community to duly react to this dangerous terrorist provocation," the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed. "We categorically demand the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
Security Council resolutions be implemented, supplying of snuffies with weapons and finance be stopped. Once again, we urge to consolidate efforts to exterminate the dangerous seat of terrorism personified by Islamic State

Iraq
Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin: 1 dead

1 dead in car bombing in al-Madaen area

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) One person was killed and five others were wounded on Friday when a bomb blast hit an area south of Baghdad, Alghad Press reported in a breaking news.

The bomb exploded near a fish market in al-Madaen area, south of the capital, according to the website.

Violence surged in Iraq with the emergence of Islamic State militants who took over large areas of the country in 2014. Baghdad has been witnessing almost daily bombings targeting civilians and security personnel.

IS militants have said they had been responsible for several bloody explosions that hit the capital in the past months, bringing the governorate municipal and security officials under critics’ fire.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said violence in the country left 19000 casualties in nine months of 2016.

Observers believe Islamic State have begun to escalate attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure by government forces on that front and to divert attention from group losses.

While losing Mosul could be the severest blow to the group’s existence in Iraq, some observers believe attacks outside the province prove that the extremist group can still pose a security threat for all cities.

Caribbean-Latin America
Peru to give temporary visas to thousands of Venezuelans
[Rooters] Peru has created a temporary visa that will allow thousands of Venezuelans to work and study in the country, part of a migratory policy that aims to "build bridges" and "not walls," the Andean nation's interior ministry said.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's government issued 20 temporary visas to Venezuelan migrants in Peru this week. Kuczysnki, a centrist, has expressed concern about shortages of food and medicine in Venezuela, mired in a deep economic crisis.

Some 6,000 Venezuelans are expected to receive the permit, which will allow them to study, work and receive health services in Peru for a year, the interior ministry said late on Thursday.

Peru has enjoyed nearly two decades of uninterrupted economic growth and single-digit inflation, a sharp contrast to socialist-led Venezuela, where the ranks of the poor have swollen in recent years.

"We want to offer a different message on migration than what's offered in other places. We want to build bridges that unite us and not walls to separate us," Interior Minister Carlos Basombrio said in a statement. The comment appeared to be a thinly veiled shot at the new U.S. government, which is traditionally an ally of Peru.

Kuczynski, a former Wall Street banker and free-trade advocate who took office last year, has previously compared Trump's proposed border wall to the Berlin Wall, and said he would oppose it in the United Nations.

Kuczynski and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said last week that they would stand with Mexico and seek to strengthen regional trade, in the wake of rising tensions between Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Trump.

Iraq
Mosul Offensive News

Iraqi warbirds pound ISIS positions in western Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi and international coalition fighter jets pounded Islamic State locations in western Mosul on the dawn of Friday in preparation for a wide-scale invasion of the region to drive out Islamic State militants.

Artillery forces also shelled the region, according to a report by Dijlah TV, which quoted a security force in Nineveh.

Besides several other pockets in Iraq, Islamic State militants had held Mosul since 2014 and proclaimed it the capital of their self-styled “Islamic State”.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and popular militias, launched a major offensive in October to retake the city, and operations have so far recaptured the whole of the eastern side and left at least 3300 militants dead. Forces are awaiting a green light from the supreme command to start a ground invasion against the extremist group in the west, which is close to the borders with Syria.

The conflict in Mosul has forced at least 191.000 civilians to flee homes to refugee camps, and many of those are targeted by IS extremists while attempting to flee areas under their control.

On Thursday, the U.S. army said in a statement that 11 civilians were killed during operations against Islamic State between October 25th and December 9th.

Hezbully militia seize villages in western Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Paramilitary forces have recaptured three areas in western Mosul on Friday, while government forces foiled an attack on the eastern region by Islamic State militants.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units), the alliance of Shia paramilitary troops fighting IS with the government, said Friday they recaptured the villages of Bostan Radif and Um Gharba, as well as the Sherka region.

The PMUs had announced earlier on Friday they began a new phase of operations against Islamic State extremists designed to secure roads southwest of the Nineveh Desert region, seeking to cut militants’ supply routes from Hawija, Kirkuk.

Meanwhile, security sources told AlMada Press earlier on Friday that security forces, backed by fighter jets from the U.S.-led international coalition, thwarted an attack by Islamic State fighters on the recently liberated eastern region.

The militants crossed the Tigris River, which bisects the city, early Friday, and engaged in clashes with security forces deployed in the region, according to the sources. Twenty combatants were killed after intervention from coalition aircraft, they said.

Iraqi government forces recaptured eastern Mosul on January 24th after three months of battles. Islamic State is still holding most of the west, and has reinforced its defenses in anticipation for upcoming security onslaughts

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
ISIS makes major gains north Damascus, captures three army bases
[ARA] After four days of heavy festivities with Syrian army forces, krazed killer fighters of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) on Friday captured strategic areas northeast of Damascus.

ISIS seized control of three military bases in the Qalamoun region northeast of the Syrian capital, after festivities with pro-regime’s army troops.

"The krazed killer group is now in control of three major army bases in the Qalamoun, including headquarters of the Brigade 559, the Chemical Brigade and al-Mahjoura base," local media activist Wassim Doghmoush told ARA News.

Dozens of casualties were reported on both sides.

According to the ISIS-linked Amaq Agency, at least 30 Syrian soldiers were killed in the Qalamoun festivities.

"Islamic State jihadis launched the operation from three directions, using heavy artillery and mortar fire, forcing the army to evacuate the three bases," Doghmoush said.

Friday’s progress may enable ISIS to storm the Syrian army’s S-Airbase in the Qalamoun region.

Invading Damascus, Imposing Sharia Law

In October, the Islamic State threatened to invade Damascus and apply its puritanical interpretation of Sharia law throughout the capital. ISIS said that their invasion was imminent and vowed to strike at Syrian security forces and the armed opposition.

"Fighters of the Caliphate are preparing to enter the heart of al-Sham [Damascus]," the bad boy group said in a statement.

ISIS has been in control of a residential block in southern Damascus since it drove out al-Qaeda-splinter group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham
...formerly al-Nusra, the current false nose and mustache of al-Qaeda in the Levant...
and allied rebel factions, in April 2015. Jahbat Fateh al-Sham was previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
.

Al-Hajar al-Aswad neighborhood is believed to be the Islamic State’s primary staging area. Their bandidos bully boyz also control most of the nearby Yarmouk and Tadamun districts.

ISIS has accused the rebel groups in Damascus of working on behalf of Assad’s government and being apostates. "The time has come for the Caliphate’s fighters to take al-Sham [Damascus] from the infidels and their mercenaries," the bad boy group said.

Syrian journalist Mustafa Abde told ARA News that ISIS would likely try to open new fronts in southern Syria to direct attention from northern Iraq, where the group is hemorrhaging.

Abde argued that: "This announcement comes after the group started to lose ground in Iraq amid deteriorating morale among its krazed killers. ISIS is seeking new so-called victories to regain its reputation as a strong organization."

Arabia
US Warships target Abyan for attack
Virginia- An al-Qaeda stronghold in Yemen’s Abyan province was targeted on Thursday most likely by U.S. warships, four days after a U.S. operation against the organization in central Yemen, tribal sources said.

Six members of the Yemeni police were also killed in an al-Qaeda ambush in Abyan, security sources revealed.

A roadside bomb went off, targeting a convoy carrying 30 Yemeni security officers from Abyan to Aden, said a security source. “An exchange of gunfire with al-Qaeda fighters ensued, leaving six of our men killed and others injured,” a security source said.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump made an unannounced trip to Dover Air Force Base on Wednesday to honor the returning remains of the United States Navy SEAL officer who was killed over the weekend in a raid in Yemen. It was the first U.S. fatality from such operation during the term of the new administration.

The president was joined by his daughter Ivanka to offer condolences to the family of Navy SEAL Team Chief Special Warfare Operator William Ryan Owens.

The U.S. Central Command said in a statement that an investigating team had “concluded regrettably that civilian non-combatants were likely killed” during the U.S. raid on an al-Qaeda compound in Baida province on Sunday.

The Central Command said its assessment “seeks to determine if there were any still-undetected civilian casualties in the raid.”

“It’s hard to ever call something a complete success, when you have the loss of life or people injured,” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said.

U.S. military officials told Reuters that Trump approved his first covert counterterrorism operation without sufficient intelligence, ground support, or adequate backup preparations.

As a result, the attacking SEALs team found itself dropping onto a reinforced al-Qaeda base defended by landmines, snipers, and a larger than expected contingent of heavily armed extremists.

Officials added that former U.S. President Barack Obama rejected conducting the operation before leaving the White House.

Federal judge in Seattle halts Trump's immigration order
[Seattle Times] A federal judge in Seattle has ordered a halt to enforcement of President Trump’s controversial travel ban on citizens from seven predominantly Muslim nations.

U.S. District Judge James Robart at a court hearing Friday ruled in favor of Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who filed a lawsuit to invalidate key provisions of Trump’s executive order. The order indefinitely blocks entry to the United States for Syrian refugees and temporarily suspends entry to citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries.

The temporary restraining order is granted on a nationwide basis, Robart said.

Ferguson, a Democrat, filed the lawsuit Jan. 30, three days after Trump signed the executive order.

#3  TRUMP IS ALREADY DESTROYING ARIZONA'S ECONOMY

TRUMP could destroy the local AZ economies. Illegal immigrants are boycotting Arizona by the thousands and moving elsewhere showing their outrage with Donald Trump's proposed law of sending illegal immigrants back to their native countries.

In the small town of Guadalupe, AZ, south of Phoenix, Manuel Renaldo is one of those who are vowing to punish Arizona by leaving.

As he loaded his stolen car with his taxpayer-furnished belongings and family of ten, Renaldo told this reporter through an interpreter:
"It's a matter of principle; I refuse to be supported by a state that treats me like a criminal!"

The effects of the exodus are already being felt by some Arizona retailers, who are reporting dwindling thefts & sales of beer, tequila, spray paint, and ammunition. Also hit hard are the state hospitals, which have reported a dramatic decline in births and emergency room visits of non-revenue patients!.

State welfare agencies are preparing to lay off staffs that distribute food stamps and unemployment benefits. Tattoo parlors are in an absolute state of panic!

Renaldo told a reporter, through an interpreter, that he and his family are moving to Canada, with a new Liberal government under Justin Trudeau and new higher taxes and hardworking people who will better support him and his family with dignity!

Kinda brings a tear to your eyes, doesn't it?

McCarran-Walter Act Of 1952

Wouldn't it have been interesting if, at some point during the presidential campaign, if one of the candidates asked, "Oh, by the way, has anyone in Washington, D.C., ever heard of the McCarran-Walter Act Of 1952?"

I did not know of this act until recently, but it has been a law for almost 65 years.

Here are the historic facts that would seem to indicate that many, if not most, of the people we elect to work for us in Washington do not have the slightest idea of what laws already exist in OUR country.

After several terrorist incidents were carried out in the United States, Donald Trump was severely criticized for suggesting that the U.S. should limit or temporarily suspend the immigration of certain ethnic groups, nationalities and even people of certain religions (Muslims).

The criticisms condemned such a suggestion as, among other things, being un-American, dumb, stupid, reckless, dangerous and racist.

Congressmen and senators swore that they would never allow such legislation, and our president called such a prohibition on immigration unconstitutional.

As Gomer Pyle would say, "Well, surprise, surprise!"

It seems that the selective immigration ban is already law and has been applied on several occasions.

Known as the McCarran-Walter Act, the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 allows for the "suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions by the president, whenever the president finds that the entry of aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States.

"The president may, by proclamation, and for such a period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens, immigrants or non- immigrants, or impose any restrictions on the entry of aliens he may deem to be appropriate."

Who was president when this was passed?

Harry Truman. Who do you suppose last used this process?

Jimmy Carter, no less than 37 years ago, in 1979 to keep Iranians out of the United States.

But he actually did more. He made ALL Iranian students, already in the United States, check in with the government. And then he deported a bunch of them.

Seven thousand were found in violation of their visas, and a total of 15,000 Iranians were forced to leave the USA in 1979.

So, what do you say about all of the criticism that Donald Trump received from the Democratic senators, representatives and the Obama Administration?

Additionally, it is important to note that the McCarran-Walter Act also requires that an "applicant for immigration must be of good moral character and in agreement with the principles of our Constitution."

Therefore, one could surmise that since the Quran forbids Muslims to swear allegiance to the U.S. Constitution, technically, ALL Muslims
should or could be refused immigration to OUR country.

#11  B, I've been a lawyer for almost 40 years. I don't know nuthin' about Judge Robart, but I will tell you that the bane of my existence has been the results-oriented judge. (Only a fraction of them are results-oriented in the sense I mean, thank God, but there are some.)

The problem is that you cannot draft a statute or a contract that will survive scrutiny by a results-oriented judge. You write a contract that says:

"The price of any beans sold by Joe to Sally during the term of this contract is one penny per bean. This price cannot be adjusted for any reason, up or down. We're not kidding. Neither of us is stoned and this is the deal we've agreed to."

A dispute breaks out between Joe and Sally. Judge Myway looks at the contract and decides the price of a bean should really be two pennies. He can't flat-out rewrite the contract, but he can fashion a rule that lets him get to the result he wants. "I find that the word 'price' is ambiguous, and has to be interpreted in the context of basic fairness, the city ordinances of Moosejaw, and my imagination. Therefore, Sally owes Joe two pennies a bean."

Improve the wording of the contract? Sure. go ahead, but it's Chinatown. This happens all day, every day, and twice on Sundays. Which is why the first question experienced lawyers ask when a new suit rolls in is "Who's the judge?"

And as for the many judges who work their tails off to decide cases according to the law, I say a prayer of thanks for you daily.

#12  Chunky, EXACTLY!

As a business man every civil issue that required an attorney's services, the lawyer ALWAYS asked, "Who is the judge on this case?"

Now as a more seasoned person, I once received a citation, but evidence favored me. This time I called the court clerk who told me that may still not get the citation dismissed. I found another court in jurisdiction that assured me it would, transfered the issue to them and won.

TWO mosques reported Muslim convert's 'radicalization' to Homeland Security and FBI months before he 'killed transit officer'
  • [Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Joshua Cummings, 37, was arrested Tuesday in Denver, Colorado, just 20 minutes after he allegedly killed Scott Von Lanken, 56

  • Cummings was reportedly kicked out of an Austin, Texas mosque

  • They are said to have relayed his concerning behavior to the FBI

  • Leader of a mosque in Colorado wrote letter to Homeland Security in December

  • The letter said a convert identified as 'Joshua' seemed 'seems pretty advanced in his path of radicalization' and rebuked a speaker on being too 'soft' on Sharia law

  • He also quoted Quran verse about 'kill[ing] his entire community', according to the letter, which pointed out that that was wrong

"Russia’s Tupolev Tu-22M3 long-range bombers flying from domestic airfields, have crossed the airspaces of Iran and Iraq to deliver Arclight airstrikes on the terrorist facilities. The Arclight airstrikes targeted large ammunition depots of the ISIS terror group [the former name of the IS]," the statement reads.

"According to the data recording equipment, all the intended targets were destroyed," the statement adds.

The Sukhoi Su-30SM and Su-35S fighter jets, flying from the Hmeymim airbase, have been covering the Tu-22M3 bombers during the Arclight airstrikes.

"After completing their combat mission, all the Russian aircraft returned to their base airfields," the Defense Ministry said.

On January 18, Russia’s General Staff said that the Islamic State holy warriors were continuously attacking the positions of the Syrian troops near the city of Deir ez-Zor.

"Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, the holy warriors continue to attack the positions of the Syrian troops. In case the city is taken by terrorists, the residents will face a true genocide. The population of Deir ez-Zor may be exterminated," Head of the Main Operations Department of Russia’s General Staff Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi said then.

After that, Russia has several times used long-range bombers to carry out strikes in the Deir ez-Zor province.

on Tuesday.

At least five ISIS members were killed, including the ISIS security official Sarhan al-Souri, when a US Arclight airstrike hit western Mosul.

Informed local sources told ARA News that the air raid targeted an ISIS security office in the Islah Ziraai neighbourhood in the western part of Mosul city, in Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh Governorate.

Sarhan al-Souri, a Syrian jihadist, was the chief of the ISIS-led Security Commission of Western Mosul.

"Al-Souri was responsible for torturing and executing dozens of innocent people in Mosul," the head of Nineveh media centre, Raafat al-Zarari, told ARA News.

According to Zarari, al-Souri was a direct target for Tuesday’s Arclight airstrike.

"The elimination of senior ISIS officials is a top priority for the US-led coalition in the Mosul air campaign at the moment," he said.

Backed by Russian Arclight airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Legion and Shaheen Group (Tiger Forces), alongside Hezbollah, reportedly struck the Islamic State defenses at the Hayyan Gas Fields around 3:00 A.M. (Damascus Time), forcing the latter to withdraw from several points in order to avoid being overrun.

Despite the withdrawal of Islamic State Lions of Islam from the western part of the Hayyan Gas Fields, the Syrian Arab Army has yet to enter the area due to security concerns.

The Hayyan Gas Fields were also set ablaze by the Islamic State Death Eaters on Thursday night after the Syrian Arab Army made their first push past the Jihar Crossroad.

While the gas wells of Hayyan have been destroyed by ISIS, this area 40km west of Palmyra is still considered vital due to its corresponding mountain that stretches for several kilometers.

Secret Service: Reports of top-level resignations 'absolutely false'
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] The Secret Service is denying that two senior Secret Service managers were abruptly forced to resign Thursday night.

"The report regarding the Secret Service personnel is absolutely false," an agency spokeswoman said Friday.

She referred all further questions to the White House press office, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Steve Clemons, a longtime left-wing think tank writer who now serves as the Washington editor on the lam of the Atlantic and National Journal, issued a string of tweets late Thursday night saying that at least two senior Secret Service managers were "abruptly forced to resign" and were escorted out of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, the building adjacent to the White House.

Clemons suggested that the move was an effort by the Trump administration to reshuffle the agency's top leadership but stressed that that was only "speculation."

Clemons is on a plane to Tokyo and could not be reached for comment.

His tweets about an incident at the EEOB involving two Secret Service managers came a week and a half after the Washington Examiner first reported that the top agent in Denver wrote in a Facebook post she would rather face "jail time" than "take a bullet" for Trump.

Kerry O'Grady, the agent in question, explained herself saying she viewed Trump's presidential candidacy as a "disaster" for the country and especially for women and minorities.

#2  Indira Gandhi had Sikh bodyguards who were her State Security. When her administration gave the Orders to Indian Army General Brar to take down the Bhindrinwal Rebellion takeover of the Golden Temple in Amritsar it resulted in several Sikh deaths including Bhindrinwal. Brar was himself a Sikh, but loyal. Bhindrinwal was a Rebel and disloyal.
In my opinion a State can not tolerate disloyalty for any reason if it is to remain a State. Bhindrinwal led a sect in opposition to the State. He set up machinguns in the Amritsar Golden temple. Brar moved against him. The army won.

In retaliation, State Security Sikh bodyguards machine gunned Indira Gandhi the Head of State to death in her own garden. 30,000 Sikhs all over India were murdered in the streets by ordinary citizens in retaliation. Imagine Schumer pulled into the street and doused with gasoline, or Madonna, and set alight in a screaming mob.

If a member of the State Secret Service in the US is disloyal she should be removed. Quickly and ruthlessly. If Trump doesn't want his own Secret Service Security to shoot him in the WH Rose Garden.. word to the wise. State Security is paramount . No toleration for disloyalty.

If this is Fake News it is a warning of a vulnerability. Fix it. Make sure it is a closed matter. The Left is disloyal. Tighten Security around the President. If the President is attacked imagine 30,000 Democrats attacked one at a time all over the US and set on fire in the streets in retaliation. True, the US is NOT India. But there is no love lost at present between the Hillary and Sanders Progs and the decent Americans who elected Trump. And the US Army is loyal to the Constitution and will put down any rebellion with extreme force.

The Left will do what it thinks it can get away with. Does anyone question that?

#3  Clyde raises an interesting point. Yes indeed, if President Trump were to be assassinated it would most likely be an inside job. Sure, there could be a lone wolf, or a known wolf, or a splodydope, or a precision planned op from a well-financed and trained group, but the odds are on someone inside -- they have the access.

The interesting point is in the response. If this terrible event were to occur it might well provoke some extreme civil unrest. The hard left prog-tards would take to the streets in jubilation, Berkeley-style. At that point I think we'd see a some significant, armed push back from fly-over land. It would become bloody very quickly. Hot-tempered people on each side would drive this forward.

And I honestly don't know what would happen after that.

Louvre terror attack: Egyptian man, 'who arrived in France in January' shot five times after attacking soldier with machete
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] French soldiers shot and critically maimed a man who shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he attacked them with a machete on Friday at the Louvre, the world’s most visited museum.

Police sources said the attacker was a 29-year-old with Egyptian identity papers who arrived in La Belle France last month.

A group of British students were among the hundreds of panicked visitors at the Louvre who were rushed to secure rooms inside the sprawling museum after the assault.
The attack, which President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
said was clearly an act of terrorism, was the latest in a series of deadly assaults in La Belle France over the last two years, most of them claimed by Islamic State

of Iraq and the Levant (Isil).

The man was carrying two backpacks when at around 10am local time he approached four soldiers patrolling at the entrance to the underground Carrousel du Louvre shopping mall, which lies beneath the museum.

They told him he could not bring his bags into the mall.

"That's when he got the knife out and that's when he tried to stab the soldier," said Yves Lefebvre, a police union official.

The soldiers first tried to beat off the attacker before opening fire, said Benoit Brulon, a front man for the 3,500-strong military force that patrols Gay Paree and its major tourist attractions.

They fired five bullets at the man, wounding him in the stomach and the leg, and leaving him in a critical condition. Two of the soldiers suffered minor injuries in the encounter.

The attacker is thought to have entered La Belle France on a flight from Dubai, police sources said, but Sherlocks were still trying to establish his identity. In his visa request to come to La Belle France he declared that he was Egyptian.

In a statement Friday morning, the Treasury Department published a list of 13 individuals and 12 entities facing new restrictions for supporting the missile program, having links to terrorism or providing support for Iran’s hard-line Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The entities include companies based in Tehran, United Arab Emirates, Leb and China.

The Trump administration has sought to take a harder line on Iran, banning its citizens from entering the U.S. and accusing the nation of interfering in the affairs of U.S. allies in the Middle East. But the sanctions announced Friday were limited in scope, serving mostly as a warning signal.

Europe
Program paying asylum applicants to leave Germany voluntarily begins
[DeutscheWelle] The program "StartHilfe Plus," which loosely translates to "start help plus," began on Wednesday.

Administered by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the initiative aims to financially reward asylum applicants if they are willing to return to their homelands. About 40 million euros ($43 million) has been set aside for payments.

"In the year 2016 about 55,000 people voluntarily returned to their homelands - that's an increase compared to the year before [about 35,000 in 2015]. We have good conditions [for another increase on voluntary returns] with our additional budget," Jutta Cordt, who officially took over the leadership of BAMF on Wednesday, told DW.

BAMF is dealing with a backlog of some 430,000 unprocessed applications for asylum, something Cordt described as a "challenge."

Incentives to leave quickly
Under the multi-tier system of "StartHilfe Plus," people with little chance of being granted asylum in Germany would be rewarded for leaving, especially if they do so before their asylum application procedure has been completed.

People older than 12 who withdraw their asylum applications before their case is decided would receive 1,200 euros. People whose applications are rejected would receive 800 euros if they agreed not to appeal the decision and instead leave Germany before the end of a given time limit. Extra payments would apply for families and children under 12; there is also provision for migrants colonists who have a "Duldung" or temporary permission to stay in Germany.

The program has several restrictions in place that aim to reduce the risk of the program being abused. People from certain countries or regions, including the western Balkans, are not eligible and applicants also have to be without their own funds. Syrian citizens cannot apply.

Cheaper than deportations
More than a million refugees and migrants colonists arrived in Germany in the past two years. According to the results of a BAMF survey, a refugee's travel to Germany cost about 7,100 euros and took 35 days on average.

While many who arrived following the perilous journey are entitled to refugee status because they fled war or persecution, those who came for economic or other reasons face having their asylum applications rejected and being sent back. Germany has also named a number of countries "safe countries of origin," including Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.

"For all those who have no prospect of staying in Germany, voluntarily departure represents a better way than deportation," Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said.

For the government, paying migrants colonists and refugees to return of their own accord pays off because deporting them is much more expensive. Other financial incentive programs for voluntarily returning migrants colonists have long been in effect in Germany on a national and state level, as well programs at the EU level.

Egypt rejects European proposals for 'illegal migrants' camps in Africa
[AlAhram] A foreign affairs ministry official said that the EU should instead invest in more jobs in the southern Mediterranean region and African continent.

Egypt announced its rejection on Thursday of establishing camps for irregular immigrants colonists in Africa, following a recent meeting of European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
(EU) interior ministers who discussed the possibility of financing camps on the continent.

Hisham Badr, Egypt’s assistant foreign minister for multilateral affairs, called on Europe instead to increase investments to create more jobs in the southern Mediterranean region and African continent to curb irregular migration.

Badr’s statement came ahead of his visit to Geneva upon an official invitation from the International Organization For Migration (IOM) to present Egypt’s expertise in combating irregular migration.

In November 2016, Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi signed into law a bill aimed at curbing illegal immigration and cracking down on human smuggling amid a hike in the number of migrants colonists departing from the country to Europe.

Last week, interior ministers from the EU discussed in a meeting the possibility of financing camps in Africa where the UN's refugee agency and aid groups would process migrants colonists to prevent them from trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

Nearly 210,000 irregular immigrants colonists arrived in Europe across the Mediterranean from January to June 2016.

Around 3000 irregular immigrants colonists drowned in the Mediterranean during the same period, according to the IOM.

Colorado Republican Wants To Let Crime Victims Sue Politicians For Sanctuary City Policies
[DAILYCALLER] A Colorado state representative announced a bill Monday that would allow victims of certain crimes committed by illegal immigrants colonists to sue state and local politicians who defy federal immigration authorities seeking to enforce the law, multiple news outlets are reporting.

Republican state Rep. Dave Williams, who is Hispanic, said he wants to strip the "immunity" from Democratic politicians who "place Coloradans in danger because of the sanctuary city policies that they created and continue to implement," the Denver Post reported.

"As the first Latino elected to Colorado House District 15, I think it’s important that we do all we can to uphold the rule of law and ensure all communities, regardless of race or ethnicity, are protected from dangerous policies that are forced on us by radical, out-of-touch politicians who continually sell out to an unlawful agenda that increases the number of criminals, and needless deaths among our fellow citizens," Williams said, according to The Colorado Statesman.

Williams called out by name Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, who said on Friday that he would "welcome" the sanctuary city label for Denver.

Backed by Syrian and Russian Arclight airstrikes, the al-Qassem Group and 104th Airborne Brigade of the Elite Republican Guard barreled through the Islamic State’s defenses on Friday, cutting off the terrorist group’s supply lines to the cemetery.

Meanwhile at the Deir Ezzor Landfill, the al-Qassem Group and 123rd Brigade finally established a strong presence at this site after several days of fighting with the Islamic State terrorist present in this area.

As a result of their recent gains, the Syrian Arab Army has managed to end the Islamic State’s assault on Deir Ezzor Airport’s northern flank, leaving only the hills overlooking this area under the terrorist group’s control.

Duterte says cease-fire is pointless after 7 soldiers killed
[AA.TR] President Rodrigo Duterte announced the end to a cease-fire with communist rebels on Friday, ordering troops to ready themselves for action, local media reported.

The unilateral truce was terminated two days after the New People’s Army (NPA) announced its withdrawal from the cease-fire from Feb. 10.

Since then, seven soldiers have been killed and three captured by the NPA.

"There'll be no peace in this land with them," Duterte said in a widely-broadcast speech in Mlang town, North Cotabato province. "They said they're ending it on Feb. 10 but many of my soldiers have already died."

The president said that it was "pointless to continue with the ceasefire... it will not produce anything."

He added: "I am asking the soldiers: Go back to your camps, clean your rifles and be ready to fight."

Duterte said the truce, which he announced in his first State of the Nation address last year, would end Friday evening.

Peace advocates expressed concern

at the lifting of cease-fire, saying it threatened the grinding of the peace processor between the government and the communists. Talks aimed at ending decades of bloodshed were held in Italia last week but ended with no deal on a permanent peace. They are due to resume in Oslo in April.

US-led airstrike hits infrastructure, water supply in Syria's Raqqah

terrorist group has destroyed the water supply system in the northern Syrian city of Raqqah.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Friday that water supply was cut off in the city after the recent bombing of two bridges over the Euphrates River.

The SOHR added that an aircraft, most likely from the US-led coalition, destroyed the bridges on Thursday.

The aerial bombing damaged main pipeline supplying water to the town, it noted

Meanwhile,
...back at the dirigible, Cynthia backed into the galley, the barbecue fork held in front of her.
Jack! she called. Where the hell are you?...

Raqqah is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS), a group of citizen journalists documenting abuses in the ISIS stronghold, confirmed that the strikes had targeted local infrastructure.

The two bridges were the only ones that connected the northern part with the south of the city.

Since 2014, the United States, along with a number of its allies, has been leading a so-called anti-terror campaign in Syria and neighboring Iraq.

The US-led coalition says it is working with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition of gangs led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), to try to defeat ISIS in the myrmidon-riddled Syrian city. However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
there have been numerous reports of US-led Arclight airstrikes targeting Syrian civilians, military and infrastructure.

Saudi heavy setbacks in Yemen behind anti-Iran claims: Qassemi
[Iran Press TV] The Iranian Foreign Ministry has dismissed
...Tut tut, my good man!...

...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. are the reason for such allegations.

"Fictitious claims by the Saudi foreign minister are a result of [Riyadh's] major and successive setbacks in Yemen," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Friday.

He added that Saudi Arabia's ceaseless diversionary moves and blame games would not "change the existing realities," and emphasized that the "Yemeni army and popular forces have not and will no need any foreign aid."

The Iranian spokesperson said the Saudi rulers must be held accountable sooner or later for their "inhumane crimes" committed in Yemen over the past two years and added, "Leveling such allegations will not reduce their international responsibility for the war crimes committed in Yemen."

Court frees ousted Mardin co-Mayor Ahmet Türk
[Hurriyet Daily News] The ousted and jailed co-mayor of the southeastern province of Mardin, Ahmet Türk, has been released from prison after a Mardin Criminal Court of Peace received an application against his arrest.

Members of the public as well as politicians from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) have called for the veteran politician to be tried without arrest, considering his severe health condition.

Earlier in on Feb. 3, the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institute issued its report on the health of Türk, stating that he could remain arrested. According to the forensics institute, “there is no problem in [Türk] remaining arrested in terms of his health.” It also said he would undergo medical checks every six months.

After the report Türk’s lawyer, Zeynep Ceren Boztoprak, said they would apply to court for Türk’s release. The report was later sent to the Mardin court.

The Mardin Criminal Court of Peace evaluated the release demand and ordered Türk to be freed from a jail in the eastern province of Elazığ.

Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul lawmaker Sezgin Tanrıkulu praised the court’s decision.

“Finally, a wrong verdict that contradicts justice and conscience has been rectified. Ahmet Türk was released – hope the rest will come,” he tweeted.

Türk was ousted from office on Nov. 17, 2016, and arrested as part of a terrorism investigation on Nov. 24, 2016.

After being arrested, Türk was held in Silivri Prison until he was transferred to Elazığ.

Turkey’s religious affairs directorate criticizes matchmaking TV shows
[Hurriyet Daily News] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) slammed matchmaking TV shows in its Friday sermon on Feb. 3, saying they undermined the country’s values.

Diyanet delivered its Friday sermon on the topic of marriage, ruling that marriage should strictly be based on loyalty and family values.

"Matrimonial promises should be based on loyalty. Some couples, although they have made promises to each other, have experienced disloyalty and mercilessness. Thus, marriage requires moral responsibility," it stated.

It stressed that the shows were encouraging immorality and damaging family values.

"There are so many instances when marriages broke off, murders were committed and hopes were faded because of infidelity, cheating and violence. Most have hit women and kiddies the most," it stated.

The Diyanet also announced that while 131,830 couples were getting divorced, 620,982 couple got married in 2015, noting that 109,987 children suffered from separation.

"These numbers are on an alarming level among Moslems as Islam encourages loyalty in marriages and love for family and rules that people should practice this," it added.

The Diyanet said the protection of family lives were essential as it was the order of Allah.

"Being a family requires people to be loyal in good times and bad times, and in sickness and in health. It requires keeping loyal to the promise of respecting the rights of each other. There is consciousness of trust on the base of the marriage. Because partners are left to trust each other by Allah," it stated.

NAACP Head And Convicted Murderer Says He’ll ‘Fire Back’ If We Report On Embezzlement
[DAILYCALLER] A high-ranking official convicted of murder threatened to "fire back" if The Daily Caller News Foundation Investigative Group (TheDCNF) reported that a new branch president for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) embezzled during his tenure at a previous nonprofit.

Gerald Hankerson, president of the Alaska, Oregon and Washington State regional NAACP, told TheDCNF he wasn’t "authorizing" the disclosure because it "strikes a blow to the NAACP by indicating that we allow criminals at the leadership."

Hankerson himself was sentenced to life in prison for aggravated murder and spent 23 years in prison before being granted leniency because he, in the governor’s words, "accepted full responsibility of his conduct," but now claims he is innocent.

TheDCNF reported Thursday that the Anchorage, Alaska, branch of the NAACP in November elected Kevin McGee, who had been convicted of using his previous position as president of a babus government employees union to steal from, as a court document put it, "the very people he was supposed to represent." In a victim impact statement, the union called McGee "an opportunistic thief who has shown no remorse."

German Islamists come to BLOWS in row over who is more RADICAL
[EXPRESS.CO.UK] ONE of Germany’s most infamous Islamists has been accused of beating up a fellow extremist - in a row over who was the most radical.

Pierre Vogel is considered one of the country’s most prominent hate preachers.

The 38-year-old, who converted to Islam in 2001, has been linked with many ISIS supporters in the German Islamist scene.

The Salafist preacher, who insists on being called Abu Hamza, is a former professional boxer with an undefeated record.

However, his latest fight has taken place outside the ring, when he attacked fellow ISIS supporter Sabri ben-Abda in a car.

The fight began after ben-Abda claimed that he was a ‘true devotee’ and his former best friend Vogel was no longer radical enough.

The accusation is said to have enraged Vogel and a violent scuffle broke out.

While ben-Abda filed a report for GBH and vandalism, Vogel vehemently denied attacking the fellow extremist.

Vogel once appeared in a video with a young girl known as ’Safia S’, who was recently jailed for six years after stabbing a policeman in Hanover.

She had been stopped from travelling to Syria with the intention of becoming a martyr.

The 16-year-old, known as ‘The ISIS girl’ in Germany, attacked the officer when he asked to see her ID as part of a routine check, stabbing him with her fruit knife as he walked away.

Following the teenager’s arrest, it was discovered that she had been indoctrinated by radical hate preachers from an early age.

Police found video evidence of links between her and Salafist hate preacher Vogel from as far back at 2008, when he described the then 7-year-old Safia as ‘our little sister in Islam’.

9 ISIS Holy Warriors chow down in Iraqi steel in al-Rutba region

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Nine Islamic State militants were killed on Friday when Iraqi artillery forces pounded a group location in Anbar.

A security source was quoted by Mawazin News as saying that the shelling, which targeted group gatherings west of al-Rutba region, also- destroyed a number of vehicles belonging to the extremist group.

Islamic State has been holding a number of towns in western Anbar since 2014. Iraqi and international coalition fighter jets have occasionally pounded the group’s pockets there. The government has yet to give orders to security and tribal forces in the province to carry out a ground invasion of those hideouts. A brief security operation, which was not officially declared by the Iraqi government, launched on January 5th and recaptured a few villages in western Anbar before halting again.

Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led military coalition, have been fighting Islamic State militants in several pockets across Iraq, most notably the city of Mosul, where operations since October killed at least 3300 militants and confined the group in the city’s western section.

The group has been reportedly sustaining serious losses in personnel, equipment and finances, and reports say it had been ravaged with divisions and infighting, with some fighters also executed or demoted for escaping the battlefield.

The United Nations’ envoy to Iraq, Yan Kubic, said Thursday that the group’s days in Iraq were “numbered”.

of Iraq and the Levant (Isil), according to prosecutors.
But German authorities are facing tough questions over how the wanted man was able to slip into the country undetected posing as an asylum-seeker.

He had previously lived in Germany and has been known to police as a radical Islamist for ten years, according to claims in Welt newspaper.

Haikel S was held in a series of early morning raids on mosques, apartments and offices in Frankfurt and the surrounding state of Hesse.

Authorities in the state said the operation had broken up an "extensive" jihadist network.

U.S. Ambassador G. Kathleen Hill told Maltese media this week that the refugee resettlement program has been suspended for 120 days under the order.

It isn't clear what will happen after the four months have elapsed. Hill said that the U.S. government is "reviewing the program" and the embassy is awaiting "further guidance" at the end of the 120 days.

More than 3,110 refugees have been resettled in the U.S. since 2007 to help ease pressure on Malta from the influx of migrants colonists arriving by boat from northern Africa.

Trump scrapped Obama’s plan to arm Kurdish forces for Raqqa
[RUDAW.NET] One of the final exchanges between former US President Barack Obama
My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me as we try to change it...
and current President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
was reportedly about Obama’s plan for Raqqa ‐ increase support, including arms, for the Kurds. The B.O. regime spent months drawing up the plan to defeat ISIS in its Syrian stronghold, but left the final decision to Trump.

After a quick review of the plan, Trump’s team scrapped it, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.

"They provided the information, but we found huge gaps in it," a bigwig from Trump’s administration told the Washington Post. "It was poor staff work."

The Obama plan included providing Kurds in northern Syria with armoured vehicles, anti-tank weapons, machine guns, and mine-clearing equipment, as well as training the forces in using the new arms and urban conflict tactics.

The coalition of forces currently moving in on Raqqa under the banner of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is predominantly Kurdish with a growing Arab contingent. Antony Blinken, Obama’s deputy secretary of state, described them as the "only fighters capable of seizing Raqqa," in a recent column in the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
. But, he noted, the SDF can only succeed if they are properly armed.

This was actually plan B. Plan A had been to rely on The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
to follow through on its promise to supply a force capable of taking Raqqa. The force that never materialized was dubbed "Erdogan’s ghosts" within the Pentagon, according to the Washington Post.

Turkey opposes any support given to the Kurdish forces, who Ankara deems extensions of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

To mollify Turkey, Blinken advocated providing just enough mission-specific support to the SDF under the condition that the weapons provided are not used against Turkey.

This suggestion was dismissed by David L. Phillips, director of the Program of Peace-building and Rights at Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights. "Syrian Kurds cannot defeat ISIS with one hand tied behind their back. They need heavy and offensive equipment to take Raqqa. If Turkey is concerned about US weapons falling into the wrong hands, the US can monitor supplies so weapons are not transferred to the PKK." Phillips made his comments writing in the Huffington Post on Thursday.

Trump has advocated for hitting ISIS hard to "crush them." He has given the Pentagon and his Defense Secretary James Mattis 30 days to devise an aggressive plan to do just that. The plan could include American artillery on the ground in Syria and using attack helicopters in an assault on Raqqa, the New York Times reported, citing official sources.

Rex Tillerson, Trump’s secretary of state, has described Syrian Kurds as "our greatest allies."

Speaking at the senate confirmation hearing assessing his nomination to the post, Tillers said the US must "recommit to the Syrian Kurds that we intend to continue to support you with the capability to continue the advance on Raqqa and then build coalition forces that can contain ISIS if it attempts to move into other parts of the country."

The Pentagon will present its plan to defeat ISIS to Trump by the end of February. How Trump’s team will handle the Turkey issue is unknown, though Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told journalists on Thursday that "there is no need to be pessimistic."

Yildirim expects Trump will "correct mistakes staged by the previous administration in efforts to fight terror and defeat ISIS in Syria. What are these mistakes? PYD is an affiliation of the PKK and now the SDF. They are all the same," he said, referring to the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the ruling Kurdish political party in northern Syria.

Tunisia: Rapist will no longer escape prosecution by marrying his victim
[TAP.INFO.TN] Justice Minister Ghazi Jribi said, on Thursday, the draft law on combating violence against women provides for the abrogation of the possibility for the rapist to stop Legal proceedings against him by marrying his victim.

At a hearing by the Committee on Rights and Freedoms at the House of People’s Representatives (HPR), on the draft law against violence to women, the minister indicated that this bill will amend Article 227a of the Code of Criminal proceedings.

He added that the bill is part of the activation of article 46 of the constitution, which obliges the state to take all measures to eradicate violence against women.

MPs called for setting the minimum age of marriage at 15 and to prosecute the perpetrator even if he marries his victim, stressing the need to educate children about respect for women.

Kuwait halts visa for five Muslim-majority countries, including Pakistan
[Iraq Sun] Close on the heels of Trump's controversial travel order, Kuwait has suspended the issuance of visitor, trade and tourism visas for nationals of five countries.

The Kuwait government informed those who want to migrate from Syria, Iraq, Pakistain, Afghanistan and Iran at present not to apply for visas.

Prior to Trump's executive order imposing a temporary ban on immigration from seven Moslem-majority countries - Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
- Kuwait was the only country to ban the entry of Syrian nationals.

Kuwait first ordered "a blanket ban" on new visas for Syrians in 2011, but those Syrians who were already in the country were allowed to stay.

According to local media reports, the restrictions were in place due to the "instability" in the five countries.

Kuwait will allegedly lift the travel embargo once "the security situation improves."

Pakistain, has, however, rejected reports on a ban for its citizens who wish to travel to the Gulf country.

According to Pakistain-based Geo News, the country's ambassador to Kuwait Ghulam Dastagir news on social media about the ban was "baseless" and similar rumours were spread in 2011 as well.

Earlier, there were indications that Pakistain may be included in Trump's list of Moslem nations from where immigration to the U.S. has been banned by 90 days.

Somalia on the brink of famine, U.N. Warns
When has Somalia NOT been on the brink of famine?
The United Nations is warning that Somalia could soon be facing a famine without urgent international action, raising concerns about a repeat of 2011’s famine which killed more than a quarter of a million people.

The country is in a severe drought after two seasons of weak rainfall, the U.N. said in a statement. “In the worst affected areas, inadequate rainfall and lack of water has wiped out crops and killed livestock, while communities are being forced to sell their assets, and borrow food and money to survive,” the U.N. says.

“If we do not scale up the drought response immediately, it will cost lives, further destroy livelihoods, and could undermine the pursuit of key State-building and peacebuilding initiatives,” said the Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Peter de Clercq.

The number of people in need of assistance is rising rapidly. In September, that figure was at 5 million people – now, it’s over 6.2 million.

There are growing concerns about the possible human toll, but de Clercq emphasized that at this point, famine is not a foregone conclusion. “A drought — even one this severe — does not automatically have to mean catastrophe if we can respond early enough with timely support from the international community,” he said.

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization’s Somalia representative, Richard Trenchard, pointed out some of the warning signs: “Labour prices are collapsing; local food prices are rising; food availability is becoming patchy; animal deaths are increasing; and malnutrition rates are rising, especially among children.” Conditions are particularly severe in the rural area of Puntland, he said.

And as NPR’s Gregory Warner explained, it’s rare for a famine to officially be declared, and can come after much of the damage has already occurred:

“Consider Somalia, a country that’s been mired in war and chaos for more than two decades. When [the U.S. government’s Famine Early Warning Systems Network] declared famine there in 2011, aid money poured in, as did television cameras. The famine was quickly defeated.

“But by the time the Somali famine was officially declared, at least half of its 260,000 victims had already died. So by the time conditions become so dire that they warrant the famine label, it can be too late.”

Somalia also faces regular militant attacks from the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab group. The country is currently going through a historic political process. It has sworn in a new Parliament and is in the process of planning presidential elections.
Recall that we tried to help in 1992. We tried again in 1994. It didn't go so well. I'm all for letting the Chinese having an opportunity -- something for their military to do.

#1  When has Somalia NOT been on the brink of famine?
Whenever it was over the brink and in full-fledged famine.

Correction of the day.

#2  It's been clearly demonstrated that providing food aid in a famine is the wrong thing. It just undermines local agriculture. Much better to fund day labor projects that pay a few dollars a day.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korean spy chief sacked in latest purge,
The head of North Korea’s spy agency has become the most senior victim of another round of apparent purges ordered by the country’s leader, Fat Boy Kim Jong-un, South Korean officials have said.

Kim Won-hong, the state security minister and a close aide to the leader, was sacked in mid-January after being accused of corruption, abuse of power and human rights abuses, according to the unification ministry in Seoul, which handles cross-border issues.
Human rights abuses? In North Korea? The KCNA guy really reached into his bag of tricks for that one...
It is not clear whether he has been permanently banished or ordered to undergo “re-education” with a view to being brought back into Kim Jong-un’s inner circle. His removal has not been confirmed by North Korea.

Pudgy Kim Jong-un, 33, has presided over several high-profile purges since he became leader in late 2011 after the death of his father, Kim Jong-il. Officials considered a threat to Kim have faced punishments ranging from dismissal to execution. Little is ever revealed about the nature of their alleged crimes.

Estimates quoted by South Korean media put the number of military and government officials killed in the purges at more than 100.

Jeong Joon-hee, a unification ministry spokesman, said the sacked Kim, 72, had been instrumental in conducting North Korea’s “reign of terror” against its citizens, adding that his sacking could mark the start of a period of political uncertainty for the regime.

“There is always a possibility that purges continue as part of constantly strengthening power,” Jeong said, according to Yonhap. “Instability in the North Korean regime is likely to increase as the elite members may become agitated and the regime’s control over ordinary North Koreans could weaken.”

Soddy soldier dies from mine attack on Yemen border
[al-Manar] A Saudi soldier has died from injuries sustained in a land mine blast on the border with Yemen, where the kingdom leads a brutal aggression since March 2015. The border guard corporal died in hospital after the explosion in Jazan province, the interior ministry said late on Thursday.

At least 114 Saudis have died along the frontier since the coalition launched its aggression on Yemen almost two years ago.

The coalition has previously said the Houthi revolutionaries have laid mines along the border.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Tensions rise between Ahrar al-Sham and alliance led by Fateh al-Sham
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Tension persists in Idlib and Aleppo provinces following the festivities between Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
brigade and the newly-formed Haya't Tahrir al-Sham (al-Sham Liberation Committee). Each side accuses the other of committing transgressions on a daily basis especially in Idlib’s northern countryside and the Jabal a-Zawiya area.

Speaking to Zaman al-Wasl, Sheikh Abd al-Razzaq al-Mahdi, a member of the al-Sham Tahrir Haya’t admitted that there is superficial tension between al-Sham Tahrir Haya’t and the Ahrar al-Sham Movement. He pointed out that some mistakes caused the tense relations.

Al-Mahdi joined Haya’t Tahrir al-Sham on Saturday along with several other Sharia jurists including al-Mohasni and al-Alayani who were considered jurists for independent factions before the emergence of this new formation.

According to al-Mahdi, by joining the new alliance, they aim to unify the scene and review several suspended issues that face the factions joining the new formation. The most prominent issues being "persons locked away
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
and detained for extended periods without trial," as well as addressing the transgressions of the security branches of the factions that form Haya’t Tahrir al-Sham.

Ahmad Qar Ali, the official Ahrar al-Sham front man, had previously accused al-Sham Tahrir Haya’t of committing several violations. The most recent violation was their seizing two Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...
cars in the border village of Qah after Jaish al-Islam recently joined the Movement’s ranks.

Idlib’s northern countryside has witnessed a series of security tensions between the two sides. The most significant incidents occurred close to the border town of Bab al-Hawa and the village of Darat Izza in Aleppo’s western countryside. The intervention of several jurists, including Sheikh Abd al-Razzaq al-Mahdi, in al-Sham Tahrir Haya’t, ended the confrontations.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
it does not appear that Haya’t Tahrir al-Sham and Ahrar al-Sham Movement are moving towards finding a final solution despite the active ongoing negotiation between the two sides. The negotiations are happening at various levels. Top commanders from are meeting, and different factions, forming the two entities, are also meeting.

In a related context, the city of Darrat Izza in western Aleppo countryside witnessed calm after the security tension of recent days. Ahrar al-Sham Movement and Haya’t Tahrir al-Sham clashed in the city resulting in the Haya’t gaining control of the Movement’s headquarters and checkpoints. The Sharia Committee subsequently intervened and returned the situation to its status before the festivities according to the media activist Ahmad Rachid.

The establishment of Haya’t Tahrir al-Sham was announced in late January. The Haya’t includes Jabhat Fateh al-Sham
...formerly al-Nusra, the current false nose and mustache of al-Qaeda in the Levant...
, Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement, Jaish al-Sunna, Liwa al-Haqq, and Jabhat Ansar al-Din.

The new formation managed to attract several other commanders and jurists from Ahrar al-Sham Movement and other factions. Those joining have stressed the Tahrir al-Sham potential to unify the struggle against the regime.

The continuing tension in Idlib marks the attempt within the jihadist section of the resistance fighting the al-Assad regime for those involved to consolidate power in the province and Aleppo’s western countryside.

NA passes bill giving constitutional cover to jirga, panchayat systems
[DAWN] The National Assembly on Friday passed a bill giving legal and constitutional cover to the centuries old jirga and panchayat systems in the country with a view to ensure speedy resolution of petty civil matters and reduce the burden of litigations on the courts.

The bill was tabled by Law Minister Zahid Hamid and is enforced with immediate effect from Friday in the federal capital. Gradually it will be implemented in provinces with the consent of provincial governments as amendments in civil laws are in the domain of the provincies.

The law minister told the house that either the federal government will request provinces or the provinces will request the federal government for implementation of the new legislation.

"The system exists in the country for the last several years and we are giving it a legal cover," the minister added.

The bill called Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) Bill-2016 was passed by 23 members - 17 from the treasury benches and six from the opposition out of total house of 342.

The law minister also told the house that the ADR system will settle 23 types of civil and criminal disputes.

Members of the opposition benches from the PPP, Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf

(MQM) raised some objections on the bill, but eventually passed it.

Under ADR system mediators, who will be called ’Neutrals’, will be appointed by the government to settle disputes as the judge.

"Under the system the government will appoint panels of Neutrals in all districts in consultation with the relevant high courts and the courts will appoint them as mediators in different disputes," Hamid said.

The PTI and PPP leaders supported the bill but raised some concerns. PTI leader Shafqat Mehmood questioned the appointment of ’Neutrals’ in the Panchayat system.

PPP leader Nafisa Shah and PTI leader Dr Shireen Mazari expressed concern

"The dispute will be settled with consent of both parties in the dispute and if any woman feels that she is not being given justice, she can move the court," added Hamid.

The law minister said there will be no punishment in the disputes to be settled by the ADR system.

Disputes under ADR system will be heard in ADR centers to be notified by the government.

Regarding appointment of Neutrals, the bill said: "The government, after consultation with the high court, shall notify in the official gazette a panel of neutrals for each district from amongst lawyers, retired Judges of superior and subordinate judiciare, retired civil servants, social workers, Learned Elders of Islam, jurists, technocrats and expels and such other persons of repute and integrity having such qualifications and, c experience as may prescribed."

The bill added that complaints will be lodged at an ADR centre and it will refer the matter to a ’Neutral’ or such other person as may be agreed upon by the parties.

Deadly clashes in Tripoli’s Janzour district
[Libya Herald] Heavy festivities in the far west Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
district of Janzour near Bridge 17 broke out tonight between Wirshefana militias and the Fursan Janzour brigade, with some sources suggesting up five people have been killed and 15 maimed.

The fighting over control of the bridge, currently held by the Fursan Janzur ("Janzour Knights"), is said to have started after an individual, allegedly a Wirshefani, was caught trying to steal a vehicle close to the bridge.

alliance, while the Wirshefana forces back Khalifa Hafter. The latter want to take over the bridge and the surrounding area. They also regard Janzour as part of "their" area, although many residents are originally from the Jebel Nafusa.

Meanwhile in what is a loosely related development in Tripoli’s upmarket Hay Andalus district, just west of the city centre, security vehicles have now been seen carrying stickers denoting them to be under the authority of the so-called National Salvation Government of Khalifa Ghwell.

The move is linked to the current rivalry between the so-called Hay Andalus Defence Operations Room which is part of the Mobile Forces militia, itself mainly based in Janzour and the Rada ("Deterrence") force which backs the Presidency Council.

Tensions have been rising in Hay Andalus over the past fortnight following the arrest by Rada of the operations room’s leader, Adel Sifau (also known as Shita). He is accused of drug dealing, kidnapping and numerous other crimes. A week ago, locals closed roads, demanding the removal of the operations room.

They also claimed that operations room turbans and the Mobile Forces which were previously part of Libya Dawn alliance were now again backing Ghwell.

"The mobile forces are with the National Salvation Government and Ghwell because they are largely Amazigh and need allies against Rada," said one local comentator. "They want the help of Salah Badi
...a Misrata militia commander, self-appointed colonel and a member of the Wafa Islamist bloc. He was cashiered from the Libyan army in 1992 because he was nuts...
[a major ally of Ghwell] and his Samoud Front," he added.

Over 1,400 migrants rescued in Med as EU preps summit

[AlAhram] More than 1,400 migrants have been rescued from 14 makeshift boats in the Mediterranean within 24 hours, Italy's coast guard said Thursday, as EU leaders prepared for a summit Friday on stemming the flow of boats from North Africa to Europe.

Picked up 22 nautical miles (41 km) off Sabrata, the rescued migrants -- travelling with only an old compass to help them navigate and no lifejackets -- said they had set off around 10:00pm along with other people.

Italy says some 4,480 people were rescued and brought to the country in January, while the UN says over 220 people died or were lost at sea.

Disabled woman ‘raped in Istanbul mall restroom’
[Hurriyet Daily News] A wheelchair-bound woman suffering from a severe muscular disease has been raped in the toilet of a shopping mall in Istanbul, with the suspect going on trial claiming "consent."

The 39-year-old woman, who lives with her family in Istanbul, was bound to a wheelchair after being diagnosed with a muscular disease 12 years ago.

In June 2016 she met on Facebook a 35-year-old man who had three children and claimed that he was divorced two years ago.

They later met at a shopping mall in the Esenyurt district of Istanbul on Sept. 24, 2016, when the man proposed sexual intercourse but the woman refused.

When she went to a restroom of the mall during the visit, the man allegedly followed her inside, locking the door and raping her.

The woman went to a hospital after the incident but doctors struggled to stop her bleeding. She also could not be taken for surgery as doctors feared there was a possibility that she may not recover from anesthetic.

The woman was discharged from the hospital, while the man was detained by police on the same day. He was later tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
on charges of "aggravated sexual assault" and "forcibly depriving an individual of their freedom."

The man has claimed they had consensual sexual intercourse.

The woman, who is now a member of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s Muscular Diseases Association, said she "could not attend the first two hearings for psychological reasons," but would attend the next hearing on Feb. 13.

"My life was already difficult, but my connection with life has been lost after this incident. I am struggling. I have lost my faith and trust in people. I have experienced the hardest thing that a woman can go through. You cannot understand it unless you experience it," she told daily Hurriyet.

Yet Another Media Meltdown Turns Out To Be Totally Wrong
[DAILYCALLER] News that President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...

was easing sanctions against Russia was refuted almost immediately, like so many other stories.

The Department of the Treasury said Thursday that it would allow U.S. companies to make limited transactions with the Federal Security Service
... the successor to the KGB...
(FSB), Russia’s intelligence agency. Possibly eager to establish a connection between the new U.S. president and Russia, numerous media outlets and journalists were quick to claim that Trump was easing, and even lifting, sanctions against Russia.

"I haven’t eased anything," Trump told news hounds at the White House Thursday.

"We’re not easing sanctions," White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer confirmed, saying that, "It is a regular course of action."

As it turns out, the move was a "technical fix" planned by the B.O. regime.

"Our understanding is that this is not the start of sanctions easing," Ian Bremmer, president of the consulting firm Eurasia Group told news hounds.

"It’s a rule change clearing up a problem with the sanctions regime that prevented U.S. exporters of non-sanctioned electronic devices from complying with both U.S. and Russian law. The problem was identified by the B.O. regime, and this appears to be the response to address it."

Even Arizona Sen. John Maverick McCain
... the Senator-for-Life from Arizona, former presidential candidate and even more former foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution. As an ordinary citizen he greased the infamous hookers peeing on the Obamabed in Moscow dossier in an attempt to smear President Trump...
, who has called for tougher sanctions on Russia, agreed that Thursday’s move was "largely a technical fix."

The media whirlwind that followed the Treasury Department’s actions proved unjustified almost instantaneously.

Dutch dump e-vote over hacking
[OMANTRIBUNE] All ballots in the Netherlands’ March 15 national elections will be counted by hand in order to guard against the possibility of automated tallying systems being hacked, RTL News reported on Wednesday, citing a potential threat from Russia.

The broadcaster quoted Interior Minister Ronald Plasterk as saying that there was a chance the elections could be hacked and that there were indications that some parties, "for example the Russians", could be interested in the Dutch electoral process.

"For the coming elections we should fall back on good old paper," he said.

Thirty-one parties have registered to take part in the poll by submitting their lists of candidates on Monday.

#4  Abu, decentralization is better. Remember anyone can make a mistake but it takes a computer to really screw things up.

Hack the computers and you can steal all the votes. If it's paper and people you can only get a few.

Paper ballots are recountable and can be examined bits in a machine? Not so much.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
The diaries of a British jihadi bride in Syria under ISIS
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] A British housewife who fled to Syria with her jihadi husband appears to have penned a hate-filled diary describing life as a housewife under ISIS's barbaric regime.

Under the nom de guerre Umm Ibrahim al-Brit, she tells how the bodies of women and kiddies lay piled on the dusty streets following Arclight airstrikes by 'kuffar' (non believers) - and how her husband recruits others to wage jihad against the West.

She also describes how she listens to an audiobook of the Koran through earphones to drown out the sound of falling Russian bombing raids at night.

'The Russian kuffar bombed - killing 100 people and injuring many,' she wrote on encrypted messaging service Telegram.

In posts seen by MailOnline, Umm Ibrahim spews bully boy propaganda and encourages other families to join her family in Syria and wage jihad against the West.

'Every breath I take my hatred for them [non believers] increases,' she wrote on New Year's Eve.

'We just missed an Arclight airstrike today. Kuffar going crazy. May Allah destroy them,' she said a few weeks earlier.

Her first post appeared on December 7 and she claims her diary, which has not been independently verified, is 'so anybody thinking of making hijrah [journey] can benefit from it'.

Umm Ibrahim claims to have enjoyed a comfortable middle-class life in the UK before her husband was brainwashed by former al-Qaeda recruiter Anwar al-Awlaki
... Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, zapped in Yemen, al-Awlaki was a dual citizen of the U.S. and Yemen. He was an Islamic holy man who was a trainer for al-Qaeda and its franchises. His sermons were attended by three of the 9/11 hijackers, by Fort Hood murderer Nidal Malik Hussein, and Undieboomer Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. He was the first U.S. citizen ever placed on a CIA target list...
, who was killed in a US dronezap in 2011.

'After many years of a well settled life, me being a housewife and him doing a very nice job, kids going in a private (so called Islamic school), owning a house at a very young age, cars, every type of luxury and comfort one can imagine Allah being the best of planners had planned something for us we had not even thought of.'

While plotting to join ISIS, she says her husband travelled to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
several times to establish the best route to Syria.

His last visit to Turkey before the family fled the UK is believed to have come in June 2014, shortly before ISIS leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
announced the so called caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

'Soon after this visit the [caliphate] was announced and now there was no option for us to stay back,' according to her posts which have been monitored by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

'We had given bayah [loyalty] to the Khalifah straight away without any doubts in our hearts and wanted to live under the shade of Shariah as soon as we could.'

Umm Ibrahim is believed to have taken her sick mother-in-law to Pakistain before the pair returned back to the UK to make final preparations to travel to Syria. The family lived in Turkey for four months before getting the 'green light' to enter the country.

Although the family's identity is unknown, several British families have left the safety of Britannia to join the terror group in the last few years.

Among them in 2015 was a Moslem couple from Bradford who fled to Syria with their five young children, a family of 12 and a mother who took her five young children to join her brother fighting for Isis.

Umm Ibrahim claims crossing the border was 'the happiest moment of our lives' but even her propaganda-heavy posts reveal the true horror of living in ISIS territory, where families go days without water and locals are executed in public squares in front of baying mobs.

In a chilling post on December 31, she wrote: 'Me and my husband were about to leave for the market. The Russian kuffar bombed it killing 100 people and injuring many.

'We sat there with heavy hearts and hatred for these filthy kuffar. Every breath I take my hatred for them increases.

'Dead bodies were placed in a car park. Only two mins away from our house. Six days later people were still taking out the bodies of deaders from the rubble.

'Mostly killed were women and kiddies.Ya Rab [oh Allah] destroy them and make their lives miserable with the most harshest of your punishments.'

She also describes the journey to the so-called 'caliphate' in a white van crammed with other families - and how she was shocked to see so many refugees heading in the opposite direction.

Umm Ibrahim says she met many other Moslem families from different nations travelling to join ISIS, including a Russian single mother whom she describes as 'being close to her heart'.

She says she was very happy to meet jihadi fighters for the first time, saying: 'Four men were accompanying us in the van with their weapons. The feeling of seeing the first mujahids and the first weapons was amazing.'

Eventually the family was taken to a large house which they shared with several other families, where her husband was chosen as the head of the household and Umm Ibrahim was put in charge of cooking for the fighters.

'My husband being the ameer of the house had to make lists of everything and stick them on walls, she wrote. 'He divided duties of all the house work between the women.

'I used to tell my husband how I wish to cook for mujahideen. And here I was cooking for muhajireen and mujahideen,' she wrote on January 5.

Ten days later she described the house as 'very spacious', claiming it had 'four big bedrooms, a big hall room, a very big kitchen, two bathrooms and a big balcony'.

Umm Ibrahim added: 'The glass from most of the windows and doors were broken and some walls had bullet holes in them.

'The first night in such a big house wasn't easy. On the top most floor of the building [you could hear] sounds of planes and a lot of noise of the wind. I had never witnessed such winds. I couldn't sleep properly.

'The next day was better, but the night was even more tough. May Allah reward my husband who gave me ear phones to listen to the Koran all night. I was saved from listening to the sounds of the planes and the screaming of the winds.'

In her posts she has also told how the man who lured them to Syria was tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in Turkey - and how her husband was working as an ISIS recruiter.

She wrote: 'My husband worked really hard day and night to help people come to Shaam [Greater Syria]. After hard work and lots of duas, Allah helped in bringing the first group of muhajireen.

'They came to stay with us in our house. From 17 we became 28! Alhamdulilah [thank God] the house wasn't that small so we managed to accommodate them all.

Umm Ibrahim says that, before her husband was brainwashed by al-Awlaki's sermons, she did not really understand Islam because she was raised by a single mother in Britannia.

She explained: 'Though being born in a Moslem household I wasn't taught anything about true Islam. All I knew was we had to pray five times a day and recite the Koran.

'After meeting the most precious person of my life [my husband] my life changed completely Alhamdulilah [praise be to God].'

She adds: 'Alhamdulilah [thank God] for the lectures from Imam Anwar al Awlaqi.

'They changed my husband's ways. Over a small period of time things became really clear in front of us.

'Life is a test from Allah. Either we fail and are thrown in the dreaded fire or we pass and are entered in the best of places.'
