Israel-Palestine-Jordan
20 years after 7 Israeli schoolgirls were killed, some hail Jordanian shooter as a hero upon his release
It was a scene most Israelis will never forget: Jordan's King Hussein, who just about two years earlier had signed a historic peace deal with Israel, arrived in a peripheral Israeli town to comfort the parents of seven schoolgirls killed by one of his soldiers.

Kneeling on the floor beside the grieving family of 13-year-old Adi Malka, the king said, "I feel like I have lost a child, too." He asked them and the six other sets of parents he visited for forgiveness and promised he would seek justice.

In the years since, Hussein, then-Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the other leaders who signed the Israeli-Jordanian peace pact have passed on, and the warm, hopeful ties have given way to a cold peace. And Saturday night, Ahmed Daqamseh, the Jordanian soldier responsible for the 1997 killing of the Israeli schoolgirls, was released from jail.

He had served 20 years.
should've "served" the time it takes a bullet to leave the barrel
"We knew he would be released sometime soon, but it still hurts," Hila Levy, who was injured in the attack on March 13, 1997, told Israel Army Radio on Sunday. She had been with her classmates on a field trip at the border site known as Naharayim ‐ the "Island of Peace" ‐ when they were attacked.

"I really admired the king for coming here, but he promised that this man would get the punishment he deserved," said Levy, now 33. "A man like that does not deserve to be free."

In Jordan, supporters of Daqamseh, whom the Jordan military court deemed mentally unstable at the time, hailed his release and called him a hero.

He was released overnight Saturday, Jordanian authorities said, to forestall large celebrations and a hero's welcome. But hundreds of relatives and supporters greeted Daqamseh at his family home in the northern village of Ibdir, 60 miles north of Amman, the Jordanian capital.

In his first statement after leaving prison, Daqamseh said, "I entered prison a soldier of the armed forces and today I consider myself a member of the armed forces."

"Don't believe the lie of normalization with the Zionist entity. Don't believe the lie of the two-state solution; Palestine united is from the ocean to the river … there is no state called ‘Israel,'" he later said in an interview with Al Jazeera.
yeah, he's "rehabilitated". Shin Bet should kill him

Federal Judge Blasts Unprofessional Behavior of Justice Department Lawyers
Or another accurate Headline: "Liberal arrogance and intolerance on display in courtroom"
[PJMedia] Here we go again. Another federal judge has scalded the unprofessional conduct of Justice Department lawyers inside the Civil Rights Division. The first time it was perjury. After that, it was unethical conduct in a trial against New Orleans police officers. Now it's unprofessional behavior and bigotry toward the South in a federal court trial challenging Texas legislative districts.

United States Fifth Circuit Court Judge Jerry Smith has scalded a DOJ lawyer for misbehavior in the courtroom. While it wasn't perjury this time, it was behavior Justice Department lawyers aren't supposed to do. It's behavior Attorney General Jeff Sessions will notice and should address. From the case:

And then there is the United States, appearing through attorneys from the Department of Justice. I have no criticism of their knowledge of the law, and their zeal is, to say the least, more than adequate. But they entered these proceedings with arrogance and condescension. One of the Department’s lawyers even exhibited her contempt for Texas and its representatives and her disdain for these proceedings by regularly rolling her eyes at State witnesses’ answers that she did not like, and she amused herself by chewing gum while court was in session.

It was obvious, from the start, that the DoJ attorneys viewed state officials and the legislative majority and their staffs as a bunch of backwoods hayseed bigots who bemoan the abolition of the poll tax and pine for the days of literacy tests and lynchings. And the DoJ lawyers saw themselves as an expeditionary landing party arriving here, just in time, to rescue the state from oppression, obviously presuming that plaintiffs’ counsel were not up to the task. The Department of Justice moreover views Texas redistricting litigation as the potential grand prize and lusts for the day when it can reimpose preclearance via Section 3(c).

This attitude is in keeping with what Hans von Spakovsky and I have reported here on the pages of PJ Media. An ideological hiring campaign took place during the Obama years where Every Single One of the lawyers hired into the Civil Rights Division were committed leftists. When the DOJ inspector general recommended that hiring criteria be changed to eliminate this perceived bias, then-Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez rejected the recommendation. I also discuss this attitude of Justice Department lawyers in my book Injustice.
I found another block of lawyers to fire
And this judge was kind to that lawyer. One I know that is a family friend would have tossed and banned that lawyer from his courtroom

Cory Booker Is Neither a ‘Truth-Teller' Nor a ‘Determined Purveyor of The Truth'
[Free Beacon] New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker (D.) described himself in a Friday interview at South By Southwest as a "determined purveyor of the truth," but a Washington Free Beacon analysis finds that Booker has a long history of getting caught straying from reality.

Booker, who was introduced by his interviewer as "the incredible Cory Booker," gave a speech to the crowd at the annual Austin tech conference, which will also hear from former Vice President Joe Biden over the weekend. His comment about being a "truth-teller," however, came during an interview for Facebook Live, which can be viewed below.

supreme leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
has been seen near Nineveh’s borders with Syria, apparently in a poor health condition, sources told Alsumaria News.

A local source in Nineveh told the network Saturday that Baghdadi, who the source said appeared near the borders with Syria’s Boukamal, looked skinny and unable to speak clearly due to past traumas. He was moving unguarded so as not to draw suspicions.

Alsumaria News, quoting the source, said Baghdadi rallied a number of his tribal supporters and voiced criticism of Iraqi members of his group for failing to exhibit enough backing for Arab and foreign members who, he said, were leading the battle against security forces.

Since Islamic State took over several areas of Iraq to proclaim an "Islamic Caliphate", Baghdadi’s exact whereabouts have remained a mystery and subject to clashing speculations. The ambiguity increased as the Iraqi government launched an offensive in October 2016 to retake djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Islamic State’s previously-proclaimed capital.

A U.S. official was recently quoted saying Baghdadi had fled Mosul before Iraqi forces surrounded the city. Other reports claimed he had admitted defeat and urged his fighters to withdraw. Some security observers said he remained in the group’s Syrian stronghold city of Raqqa.

Security forces find mass grave of 500 bodies in Badush Prison, near Mosul
Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraq’s paramilitary force, al-Hashd al-Shaabi, announced on Saturday that they had discovered a mass grave containing the remains of 500 prisoners executed by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. in Badush prison near djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
Al-Hashd al-Shaabi website revealed in a statement that its forces had found "a large mass grave containing the remains of around 500 civilian prisoners in (Badush) prison who were executed by (Islamic State) gangs after they controlled the prison during their occupation of Mosul."

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi forces did not disclose how they arrived at their figures, which could not be independently confirmed, although it is consistent with a Human Rights Watch report of Islamic State killings at Badush prison.

According to HRW, in June 2014 the Islamic State group attacked Badush prison and killed more than 670 Shia prisoners after separating out Sunni prisoners. Islamic State also reportedly held hundreds of kidnapped women from Iraq’s Yazidi minority at the prison.

The Islamic State forces of Evil shot Shia prisoners, using rifles and machine guns, according to survivors, as well as killing a number of Kurdish and Yazidi prisoners.

Western Mosul Reconquista

Special forces to change tactics in western Mosul given bad weather

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Special forces from the Iraqi Interior Ministry will change tactics on Saturday and turn to defense in its battles against Islamic State militants due to bad weather conditions, according to a senior commander. Maj. Thamer Ismail, commander of the Rapid Response forces, one of the elite forces leading the operations against IS in western Mosul, said combat missions for Saturday will rely on air and artillery strikes due to bad weather conditions in the city.

“Security forces will take the defense line today due to worsening weather conditions in Mosul..targets will be concentrated and (handled) via aircraft and artillery to exhaust Daesh (Islamic State),” Alghad Press quoted him saying.

Ismail said forces shall proceed towards liberating the remaining regions of western Mosul once the weather gets better.

Iraqi government forces took over eastern Mosul in January after three months of fighting with IS, and have entered a third week of operations to clear the western region from militants. The troops have become closer to the central Mosul’s Old City, having recaptured major government facilities, a military base and the city’s airport.

Weather conditions had been one reason behind occasional operation slowdowns during battles at the east of the city.

Ministry: foreign IS experts killed in Mosul blitz, including former Mercedes executive

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Some of Islamic State’s senior foreign experts were killed in an airstrike in western Mosul last Thursday, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense on Saturday. The airstrikes, which targeted the 17th of July district in western Mosul, were carried out upon receiving intelligence tips, destroyed an IS headquarter and killed several outstanding foreign experts operating within the extremist group, the ministry said in its statement which did only referred to the killed militants by their nicknames.

Those, according to the ministry’s statement, included “Abu Omar al-Faransi”, a Tunisian-French who the ministry said was a former executive at automaker giant Mercedes. Al-Faransi (understandably his nom de guerre) was an automation specialist. Another one was “Abu Aesha”, also a nickname, who was a booby-trapping specialist who, according to the ministry, innovated the weaponisation of the group’s drones. A third expert killed in the strike was “Abu Mohamed al-Rusi”, a Russian, who worked as an aircraft engineer.

Islamic State has attracted thousands of foreign nationals since it took over large parts of Iraq and Syria to establish a so-called “Islamic Caliphate”.

Commander: police arrest 40 IS members in Mosul’s recaptured areas

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi Federal Police forces have detained 40 Islamic State members in Mosul areas which security forces had taken over, according to a senior operations commander.

Lt. Gen. Najm al-Jubouri, commander of the Nineveh Operations, said in statements Saturday that Federal Police forces arrested 40 during searches in the southern region of western Mosul. Those, he said, included Arab and foreign nationals. The arrests were made after residents of those areas tipped off police about the suspects, according to Jubouri who revealed that police intelligence offices were opened in liberated areas to receive civilians’ information about IS vestiges.

The commander said the forces, carrying out the searches at the southern area, had found three underground tunnels used by the extremist group, adding that those tunnels, which extended beneath houses previously occupied by the militants, led to the western town of Tal Afar.

Iraqi forces invade Mosul’s Old City, a major target of operations against IS

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi forces stormed Saturday the Old City region in western Mosul, a major target on the combat list as operations continue to drive out Islamic State militants out of the region.

Shafaaq website quoted security sources saying that Counter-Terrorism Forces and the Federal Police invaded Bab al-Toub, the first district of the Old City, from three directions. The CTF also announced it took over al-Resala, another neighborhood, after invading it earlier in the morning.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a recent seminar in Sulaimaniyah province that his security command was avoiding engagement in a major street battle in the Old City given the region’s density.

Islamic State frees Mosul prisoners as grip on last major city slips

(Reuters) Islamic State has released dozens of prisoners held in jails in the districts of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul that remain under its control, residents said on Saturday. The release of the prisoners on Friday is another sign that the militants are being overwhelmed by the U.S.-backed Iraqi offensive that started on Oct. 17 to dislodge them from Mosul, their last major city stronghold in Iraq.

Among those released were people who had been caught selling cigarettes, violating a smoking ban, or in possession of a mobile phone and therefore suspected of communicating with the outside world, the residents said.

Iraqi forces dislodged Islamic State from the eastern side of Mosul in January, and on Feb. 19 launched the offensive on the districts located west of the Tigris river.

State-run TV on Friday said about half western Mosul has been taken back from the militants who are besieged in the old city center and districts to the north.

One of the men released on Friday said two militants got him out of a basement where he was held captive with other people, blindfolded the group and drove them away in a bus.

“After driving a distance, we stopped and they told us to remove the blindfolds and then they said ‘go, you are free,'” he said by phone, adding that about 25 prisoners were on the bus.

The man, who requested not to be identified, indicated that he had spent two weeks in prison for selling cigarettes.

One Mosul resident said his brother had suddenly reappeared at the house on Friday after spending a month in captivity for possessing a mobile phone.

Iraqi forces storm Abar area, recapture 2 others near Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A Federal Police Officer announced on Saturday, that Iraqi security forces liberated two areas, and stormed another, south of Mosul. Captain Tarek Jassim said in a press statement, “Security forces liberated the areas of Bab al-Bayd and al-Farouq, after fierce battles with the Islamic State group.”

“The battles resulted in the killing of 28 members of the Islamic State, including 4 suicide bombers and a sniper,” Jassim added.

Jassim also pointed out that the security forces started to storm al-Abar area, south of Mosul, to liberate it from the control of the terrorist group.

Iraqi forces capture village, major water station near western Mosul’s Tigris bank

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi forces on Saturday became in control over a major water station and a village near the western bank of the Tigris River as fights rage on against Islamic State in the western side of Mosul. Lt. Gen. Abdul-Amir Yarallah, commander of the Joint Operations Command’s battles in Nineveh, said the army’s 16th division liberated the Khawaja Khalil village as well as the “grand water project” which feeds the eastern region which the government recaptured in January.

, after foiling the group’s attack on east of Baiji, north of Salahuddin, Alsumaria News reported on Saturday.

The source said, "Security forces foiled an attack launched by the Islamic State group on al-Fatha intersection, east of Baiji."

"Four members of the Islamic State were killed, and an unidentified number of turbans were maimed during the attack, while security forces seized large quantities of weapons in the enemy’s area," the source added on condition of anonymity.

The source also informed that seven members of al-Hashd al-Shaabi forces, that repulsed the attack, were maimed.

Earlier today, Iraqi security forces repulsed an armed attack launched by the Islamic State terrorist group on the western side of Sharqat that was liberated earlier by security forces, and killed 15 members of the group, who tried to sneak into the city.

MSM Golden Throat confronts blogger in White House
I will admit I don't visit Gateway Pundit because, in my most humble opinion, they are unreadable, and not because of politics.
[Politico] A Fox News Radio correspondent confronted in the White House briefing room the White House reporter for a website that traffics in conspiracy theories, witnesses said on Friday.

As reporters were getting settled ahead of Friday’s briefing, the Fox correspondent Jon Decker pointed out that a reporter from Gateway Pundit, Lucian Wintrich, was in the room and that they “hate blacks, Jews, Hispanics,” according to BuzzFeed White House correspondent Adrian Carrasquillo, who tweeted about the incident.

Decker also sent an email to the entire White House reporter email listserv, noting that the White House "has admitted Gateway Pundit into today's White House Press Briefing."

While some in the White House briefing room say the White House should be open to any and all outlets, others have expressed concern with certain outlets being legitimized via their White House credentials.

Fox News confirmed Decker was reacting to previous tweets Wintrich had posted. According to a White House Correspondent in the room, several reporters shook Decker’s hands as he walked back to the Fox News radio booth.

World Faces Worst Humanitarian Crisis Since WWII
[An Nahar] The United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
is warning that the world is facing its worst humanitarian crisis since the end of World War II, with more than 20 million people facing starvation and famine in four countries.
Not that it has a thing to do with religion, mind you.
The world body's humanitarian chief Stephen O'Brien called Friday for an urgent mobilization of funds -- $4.4 billion by July -- for northeastern Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
to "avert a catastrophe."

"Otherwise, many people will predictably die from hunger, livelihoods will be lost and political gains that have been hardwon over the last few years will be reversed," O'Brien said in his stark warning to the UN Security Council.

"Without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death. Many more will suffer and die from disease. Children stunted and out of school. Livelihoods, futures and hope will be lost."

He called war-wracked Yemen "the largest humanitarian crisis in the world," with two thirds of the population, or 18.8 million people -- three million more than in January -- in need of assistance and more than seven million with no regular access to food.

The conflict in Yemen has left more than 7,400 people dead and 40,000 maimed since an Arab-state coalition intervened on the government's side against rebels in March 2015, according to UN figures.

In just the past two months alone, more than 48,000 people have fled fighting in the Arab world's poorest country, according to O'Brien, as it grapples with a proxy war fought by archrivals Iran and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...

#8  The South Sudan fiasco has been on going for over twenty years.

The solution in the South Sudan is to do a POW snatch and drag Bashir into a court room somewhere.

Otherwise, the UN plan just calls more many more tons of food to rot in warehouses and on piers because the combatants can't agree on allowing the distribution of food to the civilians...

How much money and food has the UN dumped into these pestholes only to see the money used to buy weapons and ammunition and the food either used by the local Moslem thugs, burned or allowed to rot?

Amal Clooney: Don't Let Islamic State Get Away with Genocide
[An Nahar] Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney urged Iraq and the world's nations on Thursday not to let the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bad boy group "get away with genocide."

The wife of actor George Clooney, who represents victims of IS rapes and kidnappings, told a U.N. meeting that what's "shocking" is not just the group's brutality but the "passive" response by the world's nations to the campaign to investigate its crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice.

She urged Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to send a letter to the U.N. Security Council so it can vote to set up an investigation into crimes by the group in Iraq where IS once controlled about 40 percent of the country's territory but is now being routed by government and coalition forces.

"Justice is what the victims want..." Clooney said, "but justice will be forever out of reach if we allow the evidence to disappear, if mass graves are not protected, if medical evidence is lost, if witnesses can no longer be traced."

Clooney expressed frustration that nothing has happened since she came to the U.N. six months ago seeking accountability for victims of the Islamic State group, also known by the acronym ISIS and the Arab name ISIS.

"Killing ISIS on the battlefield is not enough. We must kill the idea behind ISIS by exposing the brutality and bringing individual criminals to justice," she said.

Clooney represents Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman captured by IS in Iraq in 2014, who has spoken out about since her release about being raped, sold as a sex slave, and praying for death while in captivity.

Murad, now a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking, told the meeting that victims have patiently waited for over a year for the investigation of IS to start "to be able to at least bury our dead."

"Why it is taking so long? I cannot understand why you are letting ISIS get away with it, or what more you need to hear before you will act," Murad said, her voice breaking with emotion. "So today, I ask the Iraqi government and the U.N. to establish an investigation and give all the victims of ISIS the justice they deserve."

Clooney addressed prime minister al-Abadi saying it was initially Iraq's idea to involve the U.N. and sending a letter "would silence those who doubt your commitment to bring ISIS to justice."

If no letter is forthcoming, she said the Security Council could act without Iraq's consent, or it could refer the bad boy group to the International Criminal Court, or the General Assembly could establish "an accountability mechanism" as it did for crimes in Syria in December. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres could also launch an investigation, she said.

"But none of this has happened," Clooney said. "Instead, mass graves in Iraq lie unprotected and un-exhumed, witnesses are fleeing and not one ISIS bully boy has faced trial for international crimes anywhere in the world."

Clooney urged all countries "to stand up for justice" and demonstrate "moral leadership" to make sure that ISIS is held accountable.

Britannia's U.N. Ambassador Matthew Rycroft told the meeting he looks forward to finalizing the Security Council resolution with Iraq "very, very soon." He said the aim is to assist Iraq "with the difficult but crucial challenge of preserving the huge amount of evidence of ISIS crimes committed on Iraqi territory."

Iraq's U.N. Ambassador Mohammed Alhakim said the government plans to try cases involving low and mid-level members of ISIS but it will have to work with the international community to bring the top leaders to justice.

He made no mention, however, of U.N. help in preserving evidence or the required letter.

Yarkadas added he hoped the government would lift the ban. In a gesture of protest, the demonstrators mailed cards to their detained colleagues.
...thus adding themselves to the list for Erdogan's next round of Gulenist arrests,
The Turkish government imposed a state of emergency in the wake of the failed July 15 coup attempt aiming to oust Erdogan, which critics say has been used for a massive clampdown on Erdogan's opponents and not merely suspected coup plotters.

According to journalists' associations, about 170 media outlets have been closed and nearly 800 press cards cancelled.

More than 100 journalists and media contributors are in jail, said Reporters Without Borders in a December report, which said the country led a rise in journalist detentions in 2016.

"The number of detained professional journalists in Turkey has risen 22 percent after quadrupling in the wake of the failed coup d'etat in July," it said.

Last month's detention of Deniz Yucel, 43, a German journalist for the Die Welt daily on terrorism-related charges has strained relations between Ankara and Berlin.

"Deniz Yucel is a professional, he is known to be a very good journalist," Fatih Polat, editor-in-chief of the Turkish daily Evrensel, told AFP.

Turkish PM warns Europe against meddling in affairs
[AA.TR] Turkish premier has warned Europe not to interfere in the nation's internal affairs, hours after Dutch government canceled Turkish foreign minister's flight permit.

"Do not do that! I warn that this does not fit into friendship, [and] alliance. Those who become friends of Turkey's enemies will display enmity against Turkey," the prime minister said.

Dutch Foreign Ministry announced early Saturday in a statement the Netherlands canceled Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu's flight permit on grounds of "security" and "public safety". The foreign minister was scheduled to address the Turkish community in the Dutch city of Rotterdam later Saturday.

Kenya starts mass sacking of striking doctors
[AA.TR] The Kenyan government Friday started cracking the whip on striking doctors by firing them en masse for missing work without reason and taking part in an illegal strike.

After the government withdrew a 50 percent pay raise offer among other benefits meant to woo doctors back from their three-month nationwide strike, it warned the doctors that it will not "succumb to threats and intimidation" and ordered them to resume work or face disciplinary action.

According to the Nairobi county government, more than 120 doctors have already been dismissed from work for taking part in the illegal strike and staying out of work without reason.

Kenyan Health Ministry offices in the country’s 47 counties are working to compile a list of doctors who are set to face disciplinary action after the deadline to resume work expired earlier today.

The government maintains it is no longer interested in engaging the doctors in further negotiations on salaries and allowances.

Doctors in Kenya had previously rejected a deal to hike wages by 50 percent and pay $5.8 million in backdated allowances, instead demanding a 300 percent pay hike and better working conditions.

[GEO.TV] LAHORE: A girl suffered serious injuries to her face in an acid attack by unidentified people on early Sunday morning in Thokar Niaz Baig area. The girl was immediately shifted to the Burns ward of Jinnah Hospital. The suspects, in this case, are on the run, informed city police.

The plight of acid attack victims and survivors became the focus of a 40-minute Oscar-winning documentary 'Saving Face' by a Pakistani woman Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in 2012.

More than 100 people, mainly women and girls, are disfigured in acid attacks every year in Pakistan, although groups helping survivors say many more cases go unreported.

China-Japan-Koreas
Why China’s Hui Muslims Fear They’re Next To Face Crackdown On Religion
[SCMP] Five times a day, the call to prayer is broadcast from loudspeakers at one of China’s largest mosques, in a small, ethnic Hui town in the southwestern border province of Yunnan (雲南).

Rows of date palms grow in Shadian’s Harmony Square, in front of the prayer hall, while two Chinese-style archway gates, engraved with the characters for “love the country” and “love the religion”, stand on either side of it.

In the late afternoon, swarms of students emerge from a private Islamic college and head towards the mosque to perform their fourth prayer of the day.

Outside, a group of Hui tourists speaking with a northern accent – women in black robes and men in white caps – take turns posing for photographs with the giant mosque behind them.

While the Chinese government has cracked down on religious activities among the Muslim Uygur community in Xinjiang ( 新疆 ), citing the threat of Islamic extremism, ethnic Hui Muslims more closely integrated with Han Chinese society have been able to enjoy much greater religious freedom.

However, growing Islamophobia in China has seen both groups targeted by online attacks at a time when anti-Muslim rhetoric is on the rise across the world.

With the country’s top leaders repeatedly warning of the dangers of radical Islam, increasing levels of online hate speech are fuelling concerns that the heavy controls in Xinjiang could be extended to the Hui community in Yunnan.

In Shadian, street signs are in Chinese, English and Arabic. Hotels, shops and restaurants have dome-shaped front doors. And banners carrying verses from the Koran hang above an outdoor halal food court.

During the Cultural Revolution, the People’s Liberation Army killed more than 1,000 Hui in Shadian during a crackdown on believers.

After China’s opening up, the government paid compensation and many Hui became rich working in the area’s copper, lead and zinc mines.

Except for its bloody history and exotic appearance, Shadian, home to about 15,000 Muslims, is little different from most rapidly developing Chinese towns.
They tell me that except for the invasion it was a really nice day in Anzio...

Dutch PM bars Turkish minister as rally dispute escalates
[GEO.TV] The Netherlands barred The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

's foreign minister from landing in Rotterdam on Saturday in a row over Ankara's political campaigning among Turkish emigres, leading President Tayyip Erdogan to brand its fellow NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and structure....
member a "Nazi remnant".

The dispute escalated in the evening as Turkey's family minister was prevented by police from entering the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam. Hundreds of protesters waving Turkish flags gathered outside, demanding to see the minister.

Two Dutch broadcasters said the minister, Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, was detained by Dutch authorities to prevent her addressing the crowd. RTL said Kaya was declared an "undesirable alien" and would be escorted to Germany.

The decision to detain the minister came as roughly 2,000 pro-Erdogan protesters were gathered outside the consulate in Rotterdam. The news of plans to return her to Germany drew boos and whistling through the crowd as police in riot gear and on horseback warned that they would use force to disperse protesters.

Turkey's foreign ministry said it did not want the Dutch ambassador to Ankara to return from leave "for some time". Turkish authorities sealed off the Dutch embassy in Ankara and consulate in Istanbul in apparent retaliation and hundreds gathered there for protests at the Dutch action.

President Erdogan is looking to the large number of emigre Turks living in Europe, especially in Germany and the Netherlands, to help clinch victory next month in a referendum that would give the presidency sweeping new powers.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel

has said she will do everything possible to prevent Turkish political tensions spilling onto German soil and four rallies in Austria and one in Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
have been canceled due to the growing dispute.

Erdogan has cited domestic threats from Kurdish and Islamist holy warriors and a July coup bid as cause to vote "yes" to his new powers. But he has also drawn on the emotionally charged row with Europe to portray Turkey as betrayed by allies while facing wars on its southern borders.

The Dutch government had banned Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu from attending a rally on Saturday in Rotterdam but he said he would fly there anyway, saying Europe must be rid of its "boss-like attitude".
The Times of Israel adds:
Police moved in early Sunday using water cannons and horses to break up protests in Rotterdam which erupted after Dutch authorities barred Turkish ministers from visiting.

After several hours of a calm, but tense demonstration by more than 1,000 people outside the Turkish consulate, AFP correspondents saw police, some carrying out mounted charges on horseback, begin to forcefully disperse the protesters.

The port city’s mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb told news hounds police had moved in to try to break up "a few groups," but that the situation in the city center was stabilizing as police "try to get everyone to return home."

But after initially dispersing, the crowd began to gather in smaller groups again, with the police once again moving in, an AFP correspondent said.
Update at 11:10 am. EDT from Russia Today, courtesy of Skidmark, reporting on the eviction of the Turkish family minister from the country, and Mayor Aboutaleb's indignation that the consulate lied to him about her plans.

Netherlands Urges Support for Syria War Crimes Database
[An Nahar] Dutch officials on Thursday urged nations to boost efforts to create a database of alleged war crimes in Syria, using evidence smuggled abroad by refugees and Sherlocks.

"We already have millions of pages and gigabytes of evidence," Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders told a conference gathering more than 150 experts, diplomats, rights activists and international lawyers.

"And millions more are waiting -- hidden in suitcases and banana crates, buried in caves and pits," he said, voicing the hope that "we can use that evidence to build airtight cases against those guilty of the worst crimes imaginable."

The U.N. General Assembly agreed in December to set up an investigative mechanism to gather evidence on war crimes in Syria, where the civil war between Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
's regime and rebels fighting to oust him has raged for six years.

It would be the first step towards trying to prosecute those responsible for atrocities in the war which has left more than 310,000 dead and forced millions to flee as refugees.

The Netherlands, which already hosts top international courts dealing with the world's worst crimes, has offered expertise and a million euros to help get the database up and running.

"After six years of conflict in Syria, the evidence of war crimes, human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
violations and crimes against humanity is overwhelming," Koenders said before the experts met behind closed doors.

"Syrians are taking enormous risks to bring the truth to light," he added, recalling how one military police officer fled the country with flash drives hidden in his socks containing over 28,000 photos of deaths allegedly in government custody.

Another former civil servant escaped with 1,000 pages taped to his body, allegedly containing top-level orders to use indiscriminate violence.

Grassroots Sherlocks smuggled what they said was "proof of war crimes" through a dozen checkpoints hidden in banana crates.

Iraq Battles IS in Mosul, Commander Says Resistance Weakening
[An Nahar] Iraqi special forces battled the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group on Friday in west djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, where a commander said jihadist resistance is showing signs of weakening under repeated assaults.

The jihadists are also facing simultaneous offensives in Syria by government forces, Turkish-backed rebels and a US-supported alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, piling more pressure on IS.

But the battle for Mosul's Old City -- which could see some of the toughest fighting of the operation -- has not yet begun, nor has fighting inside the city of Raqa, IS's main bastion in Syria.

Iraq's Counter-Terrorism Service assaulted the al-Amil al-Oula neighbourhood of west Mosul early on Friday, and were battling the jihadists inside it, said Staff Major General Maan al-Saadi, a CTS commander.

"The enemy fought fiercely in the first defensive line from al-Ghazlani base to Wadi Hajar and to al-Sumood neighbourhood," Saadi said, referring to areas that Iraqi forces have recaptured since launching their assault on west Mosul on February 19.

But "after these neighbourhoods, after we broke the defensive line, they lost many fighters," he said.

"The enemy has begun to collapse. They have lost many of their combat capabilities. Today, the enemy sent (boom-mobiles), but not in the numbers that they sent at the beginning of the battle."

In another sign that the jihadists are feeling the squeeze, their chief His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

Britain migrant colonist briefs

Government is ordered to pay compensation to a Sudanese asylum seeker, 16, who immigration officers refused to believe was a ‘child’ and held for three weeks in an adult detention centre
09/03/17
[DailyMail] The teen arrived in the UK to claim asylum in 2014 and was detained, despite being a minor, on the basis that officials 'assessed him, on appearance alone, to be significantly older than 18'.
Very oddly, for the Daily Mail, there are no photos of the lad, either then or now, which would make a cynical mind suspicious.

At Least 242 Bodies Found in Hidden Graves in Messico
[An Nahar] Mexican authorities have found at least 242 bodies in hidden graves in the eastern state of Veracruz that were discovered by mothers searching for their missing children, officials said Friday.

The bodies were found over a six-month period, with the first discovered in August near the city of Veracruz by the volunteer collective known as El Solecito, formed by relatives of those who have disappeared.

The collective turns over the digging of the graves to forensic experts.

A total of 124 graves have been located and after combing through nearly all of them, 242 skulls were found, a senior official of the prosecutor's office told AFP, on condition of anonymity.

Another person close to the investigation, who also asked not to be identified, said the graves contained "a lot of young women's clothes, credentials, shoes and garments that look like they belong to inner-city kids."

Veracruz, one of the most violent states in Mexico, is the scene of bloody disputes between the Los Zetas and Jalisco Nueva Generacion drug cartels.

According to a military source involved in the work with El Solecito, the victims "probably were buried by criminals in league with the local authorities." The source also asked to remain anonymous.

Mona Lisa's smile decoded: science says she's happy
[GEO.TV] The subject of centuries of scrutiny and debate, Mona Lisa's famous smile is routinely described as ambiguous. But is it really that hard to read?

Apparently not.

In an unusual trial, close to 100 percent of people described her expression as unequivocally "happy", researchers revealed on Friday.

"We really were astonished," neuroscientist Juergen Kornmeier of the University of Freiburg in Germany, who co-authored the study, told AFP.
"I wuz shocked, I wuz dazed, I wuz truly amazed...!"
Kornmeier and a team used what is arguably the most famous artwork in the world in a study of factors that influence how humans judge visual cues such as facial expressions.

Known as La Gioconda in Italian, the Mona Lisa is often held up as a symbol of emotional enigma.

The portrait appears to many to be smiling sweetly at first, only to adopt a mocking sneer or sad stare the longer you look.

Using a black and white copy of the early 16th century masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci, a team manipulated the model's mouth corners slightly up and down to create eight altered images -- four marginally but progressively "happier", and four "sadder" Mona Lisas.

A block of nine images were shown to 12 trial participants 30 times.

In every showing, for which the pictures were randomly reshuffled, participants had to describe each of the nine images as happy or sad.

"Given the descriptions from art and art history, we thought that the original would be the most ambiguous," Kornmeier said.

Instead, "to our great astonishment, we found that Da Vinci's original was... perceived as happy" in 97 percent of cases.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Accusations exchanged over heavy weapon attack in Donetsk city

Ukrainian media leveled charges that Russian backed rebels fired heavy weapons into residential highrise buildings, shutting off power for the town, according to Russian language news reports.

According to a news account posted on korrespondent.net, rebel tanks fired their main guns, hitting a tall residential building in Avdievka Saturday. According to a separate rebel report, observers with the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) in Europe were present at the site and witnessed the shelling. The korrespondent.net report does not mention the presence of the OSCE representatives at the site. The rebel report also said that Ukrainian journalists were present in Avdievka to report on rebel shelling of residential areas.

Advievka and points west have been a center of military activity from both sides. Once a gray zone, a Ukrainian attack moved forces into the area, effectively cutting off the main road between Donetsk city and Gorlovka to the north.

A rebel report said that Ukrainian tanks staged the incident for the benefit of observers on the scene, firing their main guns into the highrises at close range. As an aside, rebel artillery has hit buildings in Avidevka in the past, including the coke plant industrial facility in western Avdievka.

The artillery fire has cut off electrical power in Avdievka.

An lb.ua report said that rebel mortars and tank gunfire hit Ukrainian positions in Avdievka and Butovka mine in Donetsk city.

Near southern Donetsk, rebel artillery hit Ukrainian positions at Nikolayevka. Rebel mortars were fired on Marinka.

Ukrainian media has reported that two Ukrainian troops were killed and another 25 were wounded in the previous 24 hours.

Rebel media through the Donetsk ministry of defense website said that one civilian was wounded in overnight shelling in Gorlovka. Reports say that a total of five residential buildings were damaged in overnight shelling in the Petrovskiy district of Donetsk, Trudovskoye and Gromovsky, near Gorlovka.

Rebel media also said that Ukrainian artillery hit rebel positions at the Kievsky district of Donetsk city, Yasinovataya and at Aleksandrovka. Other locations rebel media are reporting hit by Ukrainian artillery are Zaitsevo, Yelenovka, which is southwest of Donetsk city, and Spartak, which is near the Donetsk airport.

In southern Donetsk, Ukrainian artillery was reported pounding rebel positions at Dokuchaevsk, Kominterovo, Sakhanka, Bezymenoye and Oktyabr.

Reports in novorosinform.org said that direct fire combat took place at Novoazovsk, Dokuchaevsk, the Donetsk airport, Spartak and at the Yasinovatskiy checkpoint.

Ulema should help state in fighting extremism: PM
[GEO.TV] Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
has called on Ulema to help the government remove bad boy interpretations of Islam and promote peace.

Addressing a seminar at Jamia Naeemia on Saturday, the prime minister stressed that Ulema should play an effective role in promoting unity among society and dispel the false propaganda against the real teachings of Islam.

"Blood is being shed in the country in the name of religion, you can solve this problem," he addressed the religious scholars present in the audience.

The prime minister said the PML-N government and Ulema would collectively foil all attempts, aimed at creating fissures in the society and with their joint efforts, strengthen peace in the country. "We have fought the greatest war against terrorism in the world," he said, adding the hands of Lions of Islam were broken.

According to the prime minister, some people had hijacked religion for their ulterior motives, adding that Jamia Naeemia is an institution where students from all schools of thought come to study.

The Prime Minister said that Ulema should reject arguments that Lions of Islam propagate. Speaking of the recent terrorist attacks in the country, the prime minister emphasised that these were facilitated by certain elements and the state would bring them to justice. "In these efforts, the role of Ulema was crucial."

Military courts’ establishment similar to admitting failure of our system: Asif
[GEO.TV] Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Saturday that though he is in favour of military courts, establishing such courts is synonymous to admitting that our present system has failed.

Addressing the District Bar Sialkot, the minister said, "Those who have pointed their guns on us, and on whose target is our society, country and our system, were armed 25 years ago by the then state."

"The goals were different then; but no one would have thought that the same guns would be turned on us," he said.

"No one knew that we would legislate and bring a constitutional amendment to punish them."

The government on Friday tabled a draft bill in the National Assembly seeking amendment in the constitution for establishment of these special courts.

The bill was tabled by State Minister for Law Zahid Hamid on Friday for the revival of military courts for another two years.

The draft stated that the country is going through extraordinary circumstances where terrorist organizations pose a threat to its existence. In such a situation, extraordinary measures must be taken, Hamid said on the floor of the assembly.

Africa Subsaharan
South Sudan continues to burn as the world watches
[Standard Digital (Kenya)] At 8am on a wet Monday morning two South Sudanese children step out of a gleaming SUV and run into their classroom in a school in Kampala, the Ugandan capital.

Wealthy South Sudanese generals prefer to send their children to school abroad, and only the best, such as this $17,500-a-year (Sh1.8 million) private school near Lake Victoria, is good enough for their offspring.

About 500km away to the north, several children queue up for food rations in Bidi Bidi, a makeshift refugee camp near Yumbe Town, on the Ugandan side of the border with South Sudan.

A year ago Bidi Bidi was an arid and empty tract of land. Today it is the second largest refugee camp in the world, hosting about 270,000 South Sudanese.

The UN warned this week that South Sudan is on the brink of genocide, only a week after declaring that 100,000 people in the country were facing famine, with another 1.5 million in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

A commission set up by the UN to monitor the human rights situation in the country called for an immediate ceasefire and the “immediate establishment of an international, independent investigation, under the auspices of the UN, into the most serious crimes committed in South Sudan since December 2013 by, inter alia, collecting and preserving evidence of human rights violations and abuses and violations of international humanitarian law, and by supporting criminal proceedings before the hybrid court and national, regional and international tribunals with jurisdiction over such crimes.”

Lebanese-Palestinian Clashes Erupt in Bourj al-Barajneh
[An Nahar] Heavy armed festivities erupted in and around the Paleostinian refugee camp of Bourj al-Barajneh in south Beirut between the Lebanese Jaafar family and the al-Qaffas Paleostinian family, media reports said on Friday.

Media reports said at least three people were killed and several others maimed.

MTV said its cameraman Jad Abu Antoun was maimed in the leg by a ricochet gunshot during his coverage of the festivities. He was later discharged from hospital after receiving the needed treatment.

The reports said that machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades could be heard in the area.

Several roads around the area were blocked as the result of stray bullets.

After relative calm that followed the deployment of the Lebanese army, media reports said gunfire had renewed in the evening.

It has been reported that the festivities erupted against the backdrop of disputes over construction works.

"The situation is now calm and we're communicating with the army and with AMAL Movement and Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
and we've informed them that the gunnies have been pulled from the streets," Fatah Movement's Bourj al-Barajneh official was quoted as saying.

He stressed that the incident had no political motives.

Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq meanwhile left a cabinet session to follow up on the situation.

[An Nahar] A Yemeni coasties vessel on Friday hit a naval mine suspected of being planted in the Red Sea by rebels and the kaboom killed two sailors and maimed eight, including the ship's captain, security officials said.

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
gunnies in the Red Sea.

Late on Friday, medical and security officials said an Arclight airstrike by the coalition killed at least a dozen civilians and maimed dozens more when it hit a crowded market in Yemen's coastal Hodeidah province. They said the corpse count was likely to rise. The officials insisted on anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak to the press.

The war in Yemen, which began when Houthis seized Yemen's capital of Sanaa in September 2014, has killed more than 10,000 civilians and displaced over 3 million people.

Maoist Rebels Kill 11 Police in Central India
[An Nahar] Suspected Maoist rebels killed 11 paramilitary commandos Saturday in a remote part of central India after ambushing their convoy, police said, the latest attack in the country's simmering internal conflict.

The troops were on their way to provide protection to workers for a road construction project when the gunnies attacked, said a police brass hat of restive Chhattisgarh state.

"We can confirm that 11 security personnel have bit the dust in the ambush which was carried out by Maoist rebels in Sukma district," police deputy inspector general Sundarraj P. told AFP.

"Three other CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) personnel are critically injured. We have deployed helicopters to evacuate them."

The rebels also snatched weapons and wireless radio sets from the spot, local media reports said.

The attack is the latest in a deadly conflict that pits the hard boyz against local and national authorities in the forests and rural areas of mainly central and eastern India.

The guerrillas, who say they are fighting for the rights of tribal people and landless farmers, often collect funds through extortion.

The Maoists are believed to be present in at least 20 states but are most active in Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra, occupying thousands of square kilometres (miles) of land.

The decades-long insurgency is believed to have cost tens of thousands of lives, with much action focused around the murderous Moslem-dominated, so-called "Red Corridor" stretching through central and eastern India.

Critics believe attempts to end the revolt through tough security offensives are doomed to fail, saying the real solution is better governance and development of the region.

Double suicide attack kills 40 in Damascus
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Twin kabooms Saturday near religious shrines frequented by Shiite pilgrims in the Syrian capital Damascus killed at least 40 Iraqis, Syria’s interior minister and media reported.

Syria State TV aired footage from the scene showing blood-soaked streets and several damaged buses in a parking lot, apparently where the kabooms went off near Bab al-Saghir cemetery. The cemetery is one of the capital’s most ancient and is where several prominent religious figures are buried.

Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar visited the injured in local hospitals. He said 40 were killed and 120 were maimed. He said the attacks targeted civilians, including Arab visitors, who were frequenting the shrines in the area. He didn’t elaborate, but Iraqi Shiites often visit shrines in Syria. Iranians and other Shiites from Asia are often also among the pilgrims to the area.

There were conflicting reports on what caused the kabooms. State news agency SANA said the blasts were caused by bombs placed near the cemetery and that at least 33 were killed and more than a hundred maimed.

Leb’s al-Manar TV quoted Syrian officials saying twin suicide kabooms killed 40. Arab TV al-Mayadeen said at least 40 were killed, and the area was sealed by security after the kabooms.
Update from the Times of Israel on March 15, 2017:
The blast follows twin attacks on Saturday that killed at least 40 people in Damascus. That attack was claimed by the Syria’s al-Qaeda branch, formerly known as the Nusra Front.

Pakistan accounted for over 600 forced marriages reported in UK last year
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Pakistain accounted for 612 of over 1,400 cases of forced marriage reported in the UK last year, according to data released on Thursday, Pakistain daily Dawn reported.

The UK’s Forced Marriage Unit recorded 1,428 cases in 2016 through its public helpline and email service. However campaigners say that the number is the "tip of the iceberg" as the practice remains largely hidden in the country.

Many cases involve girls from South Asian backgrounds, but the FMU said it had handled cases involving more than 90 countries since 2005.

At least 157 of the cases involved potential or actual forced marriage happening in the UK. Around 25 percent of the cases in 2016 involved children under 18, but most victims were between 18 and 24 years old.

According to Sayal, the check post where the incident took place is located on Qalat and Shinkai highway.

This comes as at least eleven coppers bit the dust in a similar attack carried out by their comrades in southern Helmand

Three jihadi groups active in Mali announce merger
For information, the latest iteration of Al Qaeda-linked groups in Mali. They're as bad as Toad the Wet Sprocket in that part of the world.
[La Belle France24] Three jihadist groups operating in the Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...
of Africa have merged to form one single organization, Mauritania’s private news agency ANI said Thursday, citing a video distributed by the Islamists.
Video of the announcement can be seen at the link, for those curious about the current appearance of the miscreants.
Among the groups joining the merger south of the Sahara are Mali’s Al Qaeda-linked Ansar Dine
...a mainly Tuareg group that controlled areas of Mali's northern desert together with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and MUJAO in early 2012...
and al-Murabitoun, led by Algerian myrmidon Mokhtar Belmokhtar.
...apparently the vicious, one-eyed cigarette smuggler is not dead yet, despite reports last November that the French had killed him.
The new movement will operate under the name the Group to Support Islam and Moslems, and will be led by Ansar Dine’s Iyag Ag Ghaly, ANI said, adding that it had received the video Wednesday.

The Macina Brigades group, active in central Mali, has also joined the merger.

"It is very particular to see them all together," said Wassim Nasr, La Belle France 24’s expert on jihadist movements.

ANI distributed a screenshot of the video showing five jihadist leaders seated together, with Iyad Ag Ghaly in the centre.

The four others were identified as the "emirs" of the new movement.

"What they are doing here is also against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in the region, which is gaining in force," Nasr said. "They are confirming their presence there."

The ability of such key players in local terror groups to meet freely is notable. "It shows that it is impossible to monitor this huge region militarily and even with technical means," said Nasr.

In an audio excerpt Iyad Ag Ghaly can be heard swearing allegiance to slain Jordanian jihadist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi ‐ whose Al Qaeda in Iraq group later evolved into the Islamic State group ‐ and Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area assuming he's not dead like Mullah Omar. He lost major face when he ordered the nascent Islamic State to cease and desist and merge with the orthodx al-Qaeda spring, al-Nusra...
, Al Qaeda’s current leader.

He can also be heard praising Al Qaeda founder the late Osama bin Laden
... who doesn't live anywhere anymore...
, who was killed in Pakistain in May 2011.

It was not clear when the video was recorded, though ANI said it was "recent".

All three groups already had ties to Al Qaeda, and were involved in an onslaught that saw northern Mali fall out of government control for nearly a year from spring 2012.

The snuffies were later expelled from the region by a French-led international military intervention.

Nonetheless large swathes of northern Mali continue to come under attack from jihadist groups.

The area is also seen by governments battling the jihadist threat as a launchpad for attacks against other countries in the region.

Arrests made following terror threat on Essen shopping center
[DW] Two men have been jugged in connection with a terror threat in the western city of Essen. Police sealed off and closed a shopping center after receiving indications of a planned attack from security sources.

Dozens of police surrounded the Limbecker Platz shopping mall in Essen on Saturday after receiving what they said was a credible evidence of a terror attack the day before.

Security services cited by the German tabloid newspaper "Bild" described the threat as a potential multiple suicide kaboom.

As well as the mall, nearby parking garages and an underground rail station were all placed in lockdown while sniffer dogs searched the area.

"We received very serious indications from security sources that a possible attack was planned here for today and would be carried out," a front man for Essen police told the Rooters news agency. "That is why we were forced to take these measures."

Police later ordered the shopping center, one of the biggest in Germany, to remain closed for the rest of Saturday, adding they now believed they had foiled an attack.

On Saturday evening police announced the investigation was ongoing, and thanked people who had responded via social media or by telephone during the security operation.

An 'Islamic State' plot?
The German Press Agency and "Bild" quoted security sources as saying the plot was believed to be the work of the self-styled "Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
" (IS) militia.

The sources said a German man who traveled to Syria to fight alongside the group was the suspected criminal mastermind. He had reportedly been in contact with a number of people in the Essen area to organize the attack, and had also sent them bomb-making instructions via an online chat.

An interior ministry front man in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where Essen is located, declined to comment on reports about "IS" involvement in the foiled plot.

Two arrests made
Two men in the nearby town of Oberhausen were tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
in connection with the threat. One was questioned after a police search of an apartment in the town. Another was taken in for questioning from a nearby internet cafe.

Security sources told the German Press Agency that while the pair had been in contact with the German Death Eater in Syria, they were not being treated as would-be perpetrators.

According to its website, the Limbecker Platz shopping center has more than 200 stores and attracts up to 60,000 people.
The Daily Mail has photos, of course.
Update from The Times of Israel at 7:00 p.m. EDT makes it officially official:
A threatened attack against a mall in the western city of Essen is linked to the Islamic State extremist group, Germany’s interior minister said Sunday.

Thomas de Maiziere told public broadcaster ARD that Germany’s domestic intelligence service, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, had received “tips of an attack and passed them on” to local security authorities in Essen.

“The case was evaluated several times … and it couldn’t be eliminated that there could have been a concrete attack at this mall. This was prevented,” de Maiziere said.

#2  This one makes no sense to me. The authorities picked up some chatter or something about a major attack on the mall, so they shut down the mall and announced they've shut it down so that civilians -- and the perpetrators -- stay out of potential crossfire. Subsequently they picked up two people peripherally connected, but whom they say are not the perpetrators, and today they announced they have prevented a major ISIS attack.

But it seems to me they merely blocked an attack that could easily be rescheduled either in terms of place or timing, and have not picked up the people and material directly involved. So what benefit is derived, other than to make the populace wary of Muslims, whether long term residents, new colonists, or converts -- and as a result to drive votes from Angela Merkel's party to the openly anti-migrant AfD?

'Los Angeles Times' Puzzled at Lack of Trump Hatred
[PJMEDIA]
And after millions of dollars were spent making Trump the issue on everything from land use decisions to fixing potholes, Angelenos stayed home. That could mean trouble for Democrats nationwide.... The question for Democrats: If these core groups in L.A. didn’t show up on Tuesday, will their counterparts elsewhere show up for the 2018 midterm?
Maybe that's also because Los Angeles is a one-state country, and California is a one-party state, whose voters are either very wealthy residents of coastal enclaves, and therefore protected from the consequences of their own votes, or the seething poor, many of them illegals, living east of Western Avenue. It's an unstable coalition at best, and one that will eventually collapse along with the blue-state model and its potholed roads, failing dams, trains to nowhere and lack of fresh water and arable land.
The middle class is in decline. And as it declines, so, it seems, does voting. That’s the story of Los Angeles, but perhaps it’s also the story of the Democratic Party.
If Democrats want voters to show up — and they’ve long argued that when more people show up, they win — they may have to prove to people who have less and less of an economic stake in our society that voting really matters. And to do that, they’re going to have to do more than remind everyone that Donald Trump is in the White House.
As the Democrats learned the hard way last November, however, showing up is not enough. As long as Democrats congregate in welfare states run by social-justice warriors, their larger effect on the country is nil. In effect, they've self-quarantined in a few states along the west coast, the upper midwest and the Bos-Wash corridor. The trick now is to keep them there.

#9  I wondered if this low turnout is consistent with previous elections, so I looked up the November election. According to KPCC:

The final tally is in: voter turnout improved from 2012 across much of Southern California this year.

The glaring exception? Los Angeles County and its 5.3 million registered voters. Turnout in the county came in at 67.5 percent of registered voters — the lowest showing in a presidential election in two decades.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla certified the state's votes Friday afternoon, closing the books on the 2016 California election and providing a look at voter engagement across the state.

As a whole, California posted a 75.3 percent turnout, with 14.6 million Californians casting a ballot.

Southern California presented a mixed picture. Among five Southern California counties, only Los Angeles saw turnout fall from 2012 to 2016. It dipped from 68 percent four years ago to 67.5 percent.

Blacks and Hispanics stayed home for Hillary, after slightly bestirring themselves for Obama?

And the Huffington post has been bemoaning low and falling LA voter turnout for local elections annually for some years -- it looks like it was less than 10% in March, 2015.

When it's clear that the only reason for elections is to decide which set of politicians will enrich themselves and their friends at voter expense while the potholes, gangs, and schools remain awful, how many will bother?
Posted by: trailing wife || 03/12/2017 13:30 Comments || Top||

#10  But given that, according to the article which I've now read, turnout was under 12% this election, it has improved at least two percentage points since two years ago. This ought to be celebrated as an improvement, though I've not seen enough analysis to know if this is truly meaningful or merely normal variation around the average.

Iraq
Mosul Church Turned into IS Religious Police Base

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group propaganda after the jihadists' infamous inquisitors religious police took over the Christian place of worship.

The sign above the door of Um al-Mauna (Our Mother of Perpetual Help) in Iraq's second city reads "Chaldean Catholic church", but its jihadist occupants had other ideas.

"No entry, by order of the Islamic State Hesba Division (the inquisitors religious police), they wrote on the building's outside wall.

Five jihadists lie dead outside, their bodies twisted and one with the top of his skull blown off, after Iraqi forces retook the neighbourhood from IS this week.

The church "was an important office for the authorities tasked with making sure (Mosul) residents had a beard, wore short robes and followed their holy warrior convictions," says Lieutenant Colonel Abdulamir al-Mohammedawi of the elite Rapid Response Division.

Iraqi forces are pushing an offensive to retake the whole of Mosul, the jihadist group's last major urban bastion in the country, after retaking its eastern side in January.

IS fighters took control of the city in 2014, imposing their harsh interpretation of Islamic law on its inhabitants.

Above the door of the ochre-coloured church, IS members have damaged a stone cross. Not far away, they seem to have tried to rip another from a metal door off its hinges.

Not a single crucifix, or statue of Jesus Christ or the Virgin Mary has survived in the building's nave, from which all mark of Christianity has been methodically removed.

Only the grey marble altar remains. In the church's empty alcoves lies the base of a statue that was probably also destroyed, decorated with red and yellow flowers.

The posters on the church's marble columns give an indication of what life was like under IS.

- Chilling illustrations -
One shows religious invocations to repeat in the mornings and evenings, while another explains the benefits of praying in a mosque.

A "town document" lists the 14 rules of life in Mosul under jihadist rule: "The trade and consumption of alcohol, drugs and cigarettes is banned."

Women should wear modest attire and only appear in public "when necessary", it says.

A pamphlet on the rubble-covered ground explains the different forms of corporal punishment prescribed for theft, alcohol consumption, adultery and homosexuality.

It comes complete with chilling illustrations.

Jihadists have scribbled their noms de guerre on the church's walls, and a large chandelier has been dumped in the yard.

In the church's small side rooms, artificial flower garlands are draped near posters explaining how to use a Kalashnikov rifle.

Chaldeans make up the majority of Iraq's Christians. But a community that numbered more than a million before the 2003 ouster of Saddam Hussein has since dwindled to less than 350,000 in the face of recurring violence.

In June 2014, jihadist fighters led by IS seized control of Mosul and ordered the city's Christian community to convert to Islam, pay a special tax, leave or face execution.

Weeks later, the jihadists swept through Qaraqosh and the rest of the Nineveh Plain east of Mosul, where an estimated 120,000 Christians lived, prompting them all to flee.

But the Um al-Mauna Church is in a better condition than most of the rest of the al-Dawasa neighbourhood, which has been ravaged by the fighting.

On one of its empty trading streets, once flashy shop facades have been reduced to contorted iron and shredded concrete.

On one poster advertising male clothing, IS members -- whose interpretation of Islam forbids human representation -- have blacked out the faces and bare arms of the models.

The government is now upgrading these defences, which have slashed illegal migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands and saved the country billions of forints. It is also recruiting an extra 3,000 border guards. But the prime minister warned 462 new recruits that “we cannot afford to sit back” during an oath-taking ceremony on Tuesday.

Why Do Singapore, Malaysia Use Kid Gloves With Nuclear-Armed North Korea?
Because they're nuclear-armed?
[SCMP] Even at the height of North Korea’s belligerence, Southeast Asia’s leaders have resisted the urge to join the chorus of Western voices branding Pyongyang a "pariah state".

This softly-softly approach, Southeast Asian diplomats and foreign policy experts say, reflects a region-wide belief that dialogue ‐ rather than tough talking ‐ is the best way to keep the reclusive but volatile country on an even keel.

And despite the unsettling circumstances of late, experts say the hermit nation’s bilateral ties with the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) are unlikely to be adversely affected.

The problem is that there just aren't any more GOOD solutions to the problem for anybody. The only one that's going to work is for the Pacific nations to stand up and say 'No more'(less the Chinese, of course - they will do nothing except bitch about it in public and be quietly relieved in private). One of two things will happen next - either the Kims will try and start something and collapse, or they will try and start something and we will have to curbstomp them. Either way, we're going to have to fix it now.

15 Dead in Fighting Near Yemen Red Sea Port
[An Nahar] Seven Yemeni soldiers and eight rebels were killed in heavy fighting over the past 24 hours near the Red Sea coastal town of Mokha, medical and security sources said Saturday.

The historic port was captured by government forces on February 10 as part of a major offensive launched in January to try to recapture Yemen's 450 kilometer (280 mile) Red Sea coastline, which had previously been almost entirely in rebel hands.

But there have been repeated festivities over the past month both inland and north of the town as the rebels seek to take it back.

The latest fighting focused on the village of Yakhtul, 14 kilometers (nine miles) north of Mokha, which is currently in government hands.

It came as an air strike on a rebel-held port further north by a Saudi-led coalition supporting the government killed 20 civilians and six rebels.

Friday's strike on the town of Khokha targeted rebel fighters who had taken refuge at the entrance to a market selling the mild narcotic qat, which is a central part of Yemeni social life.

The fighting around Mokha had driven more than 48,000 people from their homes, the Yemen

UN Report Says Escalated Hizbullah Rhetoric Increases War Risk with Israel
[An Nahar] Secretary-General of the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...

...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
leader His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
against Israel, rejecting "deterrence" justifications which "increases the risk of tension and could lead to renewed war," An Nahar daily reported on Friday.

The report encouraged President Michel Aoun
...a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
to resume national dialogue among political parties until a defense strategy is agreed to remove weaponry from Hizbullah and other gangs, according to the daily.

The report, which consists of 91 paragraphs and prepared by the Special Coordinator for the United Nations in Leb Sigrid Kaag citing a comprehensive assessment of the implementation of Security Council resolution 1701, is the first for Guterres since he took office on the first of January.

In the report, Guterres welcomed the "institutional and political progress" made in recent months in Leb, saying it "represents an opportunity to further strengthen the Lebanese state's authority and expand it." Nevertheless it added that "Retention of arms by Hizbullah and other groups undermines the state's authority and contradicts with the duties of the country under resolutions 1559 and 1701."

The report condemned the "threats launched by Secretary General of Hizbullah against Israel on February 16, which can not be justified as a need for deterrence." It pointed out that "rhetorical threats of use of force by any of the two parties (Israel and Hizbullah), destabilizes the relative calm and stability prevailing between them."

It called on all parties to "refrain from such threats, because they increase the risk which could lead to renewed war."

Gemayel: Palestinian Arms Must be Controlled, State's Sovereignty Uncompromising
[An Nahar] Kataeb party leader MP Sami Gemayel emphasized on Saturday that Paleostinian arms spread out inside the refugee camps threaten Leb's illusory sovereignty.

"The Lebanese government must deal with the file of Paleostinian armament inside the refugee camps as an issue of illusory sovereignty not subject to any form of bargain or compromise," Gemayel told al-Joumhouria daily in an interview.

"What is needed is a clear and strict decision to impose the Lebanese State's illusory sovereignty in the camps and to apply Lebanese laws on all those residing on Leb's territory without any exception," stressed Gemayel.

The MP expressed astonishment at "the silence of related officials and the government's and political authority's inaction to confront the festivities in Ein el-Hellhole and Bourj al-Barajneh, although Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
has called on Leb's authority during his recent visit to Beirut to take the initiative and boost its illusory sovereignty inside the camps."

"The Lebanese state has had enough of chaos scenes in Paleostinian camps that only remind the Lebanese of black historical eras of the State's incapability to protect and defend its illusory sovereignty from those residing on its very land," he concluded.

Leb has witnessed a series of armed festivities in Paleostinian refugees camps the most recent was yesterday in Bourj al-Barajneh in south Beirut, and in the southern Ein el-Hellhole the week before.

Heavy armed festivities erupted in and around the Paleostinian refugee camp of Bourj al-Barajneh, one of the capital's crowded southern suburbs, between the Lebanese Jaafar family and the al-Qaffas Paleostinian family.

Media reports said at least three people were killed and several others maimed.

In similar incidents, deadly armed festivities between the Fatah Movement and Islamist groups rocked Ein el-Hellhole for almost a week in February left one civilian dead and six others injured.

By long-standing convention, Leb's army does not enter Paleostinian refugee camps, where security is managed by joint committees of Paleostinian factions.

In recent years, tensions have risen between Fatah and the Jund al-Sham Islamist group in the camp.

The UN's Paleostinian refugee agency said on Tuesday it had halted all services in the camp for the second day because of the unrest.

Ain al-Hilweh is an impoverished, overcrowded camp near the coastal city of Sidon, and is home to some 61,000 Paleostinians, including 6,000 who have fled the war in Syria.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan Threatens to Block Social Media over 'Blasphemy'
[An Nahar] Pakistain's interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. He wears a wig, but you probably guessed that. since hair doesn't grow naturally in that shape or texture...
Thursday threatened to block "all social media websites" that have blasphemous content hours after a Pak court ordered the government to open investigation into online "blasphemy."
Pakistain is so holy it's losing all ability to function. It is the logical extreme of Islam.
The issue came to the fore in January when five secular activists known for their outspoken views against religious extremism and the powerful military were disappeared, presumed kidnapped by state agencies according to opposition parties and international rights groups.

Four of the missing activists were later returned to their families weeks later, but not before they were tarnished by a virulent campaign to paint them enemies of Islam deserving execution.

On Thursday, a court ordered the government to open an investigation into online "blasphemy", threatening to ban social media networks if they failed to censor content deemed insulting to Islam.

"We will go to any extent (including) permanently blocking all such social media websites if they refuse to cooperate," the minister said in statement.

No country can allow religious sentiments to be hurt or top state functionaries to be subjected to ridicule under what the minister described as "the pretext of freedom of expression."

Judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the Islamabad High Court asked the government to form an investigative committee to report back next Monday over the issue, saying he could order social media sites to be blocked if offending content remained online.

"The judge ordered the government to make a Joint Investigation Team with Moslem officials only to look into the blasphemy issue," said advocate Tariq Asad, who represents the hardline Red Mosque which brought the case to court.

Rights groups say the label of blasphemer is liberally applied by religious conservatives in order to silence criticism of extremism.

Even unproven allegations can be fatal. At least 65 people including lawyers, judges and activists have been murdered by vigilantes over blasphemy allegations since 1990, according to recent think tank report.

Pakistain previously banned Facebook for hosting allegedly blasphemous content for two weeks in 2010 while YouTube was unavailable from 2012 to 2016 over an amateur film about the Prophet Muhammad that led to global riots.

But Islamabad later came to agreements with major internet firms to block within Pakistain material that violated its laws, generally once the companies had performed their own cross-checks.

Yasser Latif Hamdani, a lawyer who worked to get YouTube unblocked, said previous web censorship had also originated with court orders and the judge could succeed in implementing a fresh set of bans.

"In this case you would have to apply to the Supreme Court to overrule it. Would they? He's going to couch it in religious language... It could create a lot of problems if he does that," he said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
The unforgiving complexity of the Syrian war
On Monday, U.S. commanders directed forces already based in Manbij to drive a series of convoys through the city and surrounding area with American flags flying. It was designed to send a clear message: Everyone needs to continue the momentum against the Islamic State group, not each other. But while the U.S.-led coalition may have temporarily prevented Russians, Syrians, Turks and Kurds from attacking and killing each other, the situation there exposes far graver dangers for future conflict in Syria.

It was only a matter of time before the Syrian regime's civil war in the western part of the country, backed on the ground and in the air by Moscow, abutted the U.S.-led coalition's fight against the Islamic State group in the east. Those forces' convergence in Manbij, a key transit hub toward the terrorists' capital in Raqqa, was troublesome enough on its own, but it comes at a time when all fighting forces in Syria see an opportunity to establish strongholds today that might grant them greater regional control in the future.

The showdown in Manbij this week exposes that President Donald Trump needs to make a decision soon about which forces the U.S. will support in the final campaign to defeat the terrorist network and how the White House plans to follow through without infuriating other key allies. It's a nearly impossible choice, and the administration needs to decide fast.

Angering the Turks by continuing to rely on Kurdish militia risks Ankara's withdrawing permission for U.S. bombers and fighters to use its airfields, most notably Incirlik air base. American defense officials say privately that losing access to those bases would significantly hamper the U.S. air war. The coalition may have no other choice than to rely on the Kurds, however, as the Arab forces on the ground, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, do not have the necessary equipment, training or sheer numbers to retake Raqqa, which Pentagon experts expect will be a hard and bloody battle.

And throughout these conflicts is the omnipresent concern that Russian forces and their Syrian proxies could engage the U.S. military presence and the ground forces it's compiled – a potential escalation narrowly avoided in recent months following Russian warplanes striking U.S.-trained rebels.

The situation comes as the White House considers a plan the Pentagon submitted in February for changes to the campaign against the Islamic State group. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has already instituted some slight changes, including the deployment of 300 Marines to Syria to provide artillery support for a ground force once the siege on Raqqa begins.

Straining U.S. efforts, and concerning many Middle East experts, is how few positions the Trump White House has been able to fill at the State Department and Pentagon, where the respective secretaries and their closest advisers remain the only political appointees currently working these problems.

"We're close to a collision course because we don't have our act together," Julianne Smith, a former defense official and national security adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, now with the Center for a New American Security says, adding that the various forces on the ground in Syria each have a different plan for what they would like to see happen next. "They're all going to seize on this vacuum right now, where the U.S. doesn't have much of a plan."

The Grand Turk
Protests near Dutch missions in Ankara, Istanbul
[AA.TR] Hundreds of people gathered outside the Dutch embassy in Ankara and consulate in Istanbul to protest the Dutch government's ban on Turkish ministers.

Police have blocked the traffic at Turan Gunes Street in Cankaya district after many others demonstrators were on their way to attend the rallies.

In Istanbul, protesters flocked to Dutch consulate at Istiklal Street of Beyoglu district.

The demonstrators carried Turkish flags and placards reading "YES" in reference to upcoming referendum in April and some others chanted anti-Dutch government slogans.

On Saturday, Dutch government canceled Turkish foreign minister's flight permit and blocked family minister's convoy from entering the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam.
Update from Hurriyet, now just another Turkish government mouthpiece, at 12:15 p.m. EDT:
An unidentified man has raised a Turkish flag at the Dutch consulate in Istanbul on March 12 after lowering the Dutch flag amid a row between the two countries that was touched off by the Netherlands’ refusal to allow a Turkish minister to enter the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam.

The Dutch flag was raised again nearly after 30 minutes.

According to Turkish sources, the flag was raised within the Dutch consulate’s initiative and it was impossible to enter the consulate from outside amid tough security measures.

Protests in front of the consulate building have been continuing while police have sealed off the building.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF report highlights Palestinians who ‘seek suicide’ through attacks
[IsraelTimes] Military brief examines several cases of assaults it says were spurred by domestic problems, depression, despair or mental illness.

A new Israeli army report highlights attacks by Paleostinians over the last year and a half that the military says were motivated by a desire to commit suicide, rather than by ideology.

The report, published on Thursday by the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the IDF branch responsible for civil Paleostinian affairs, details three admissions by attackers that their violent actions were the result of "difficult backgrounds that pushed them to commit these attempted suicide kabooms."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Here is the assassin of Hezbollah militias commander
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] On the May 13, 2016, Lebanese people were surprised when the Hezbollah’s leading man Hassan Nasrallah was seen mourning the death of his most senior militia commander Mustafa Badreddine.

No sooner did the news of Badreddine demise in Syria broke out, the Lebanese media adopted the story perpetuated by Hezbollah on the circumstances surrounding his death. Still, a few days later, questions began to rise about the credibility of Hezbollah’s version of events.

In 2013, Hezbollah was summoned to fight in Syria and Nasrallah commissioned Badreddine to lead the factions there alongside Iran’s Qassem Soleimani who led Quds Force.

Badreddine discovered that Soleimani was favoring the lives of the revolutionary guards over those of Hezbollah.

While Badreddine was fighting with his army in Syria, he was tried in absentia at the International Tribunal in the case of the liquidation Rafiq Hariri. Nasrallah has been under a huge pressure from Soleimani, who requested the removal of Badreddine from the battlefield.

On May 14, 2016, Badreddine was reported to have arrived to the international airport accompanied with three other people but was the only one who was killed.

Initial reporting by al-Mayadeen blamed Israel for the fatal attack,. But that article was later erased. Then the cause of his death was assumed to be a vacuum bomb, while the nearest fighter group was 12 km away from the Damascus airport, which places it in the range of the artillery.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
no gun powder residue found at the scene. Nicholas Blanford, a nonresident senior fellow with the Middle East Peace and Security Initiative, recently wrote an analysis on that point.

One airport employee recounted the events of the night, saying airport employees were being barred from entering their workplace as the operation was taking place.

"As I was approaching to go to work, I saw a lot of people crowding near the airport. At approximately 10 PM that night we suddenly heard a loud bang and what sounded like fire from three rifles,".

"We tried approaching the scene to see what was going on but we were stopped by Hezbollah fighters telling us we weren’t allowed to enter. They did not even allow Syrian senior army officer or the Syrian police from entering the airport," he said.

Al Arabiya also obtained images of the site where Mustafa Badreddine was killed which revealed aerial views of the exact scene on May 12 and May 14, both photos showing the site unscathed.

On the same day, the Shiite holy man Abbas Hoteit declared to the south Leb website Janoubia that "Badreddine was killed by two treacherous bullets".

Evidence and eyewitness accounts suggested that four people met at the security building near the Damascus airport that night, one of them being Badreddine himself. The identity of the second person was discovered immediately after the operation on Twitter when a number of people reported they saw Soleimani leaving the site minutes before the operation. The third person was Badreddine’s bodyguard, who could not save his commander’s life.

According to eyewitnesses, the fourth person identified was Ibrahim Hussein Jezzini, a person who Badreddine reportedly trusted the most.

His is the Hezbollah man, who waited for the right moment to eliminate his friend zul faqar, Mostafa Baddredine.

It was neither a bomb nor a shell that killed him, but rather a treacherous conspiracy plotted by his one-time friends Hassan Nasrallah and Qasem Suleimani.

And there goes the story of an erratic murderer’s death who was killed at the hands of a friend.

Baddreddine fell on the altar of Suleimani’s ambitions and Nasrallah’s reputation, raising the question of whether it was an individual incident, or the beginning of dire divisions and a period of darkness within the ranks of the Hezoballah Shiite sect in Leb.
