CAPTURED – 2nd Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect Caught In Watertown
WATERTOWN (CBS) – A flurry of applause at the scene of a standoff between police and Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev signaled his capture Friday night.

After a nearly two-hour standoff in a Watertown neighborhood, Tsarnaev was taken from the scene by ambulance to Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge.

A Tweet by Boston police minutes later said it best:

CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody.—
Boston Police Dept. (@Boston_Police) April 20, 2013

The standoff began just before 7 p.m., minutes after Massachusetts State Police announced that they had completed their door-to-door search in Watertown without locating Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

#11  FBI: Bombing suspect interviewed in 2011
Agents interviewed Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2011 at the request of a foreign government that suspected he might have ties to extremist groups, the FBI official said.

The official declined to name the foreign government, but said the FBI took a number of investigative steps to check on the request, including interviewing Tsarnaev, looking at his travel history, checking databases for derogatory information and searching for Web postings.

Ultimately, no derogatory information was found and the matter was concluded, the FBI official said. The foreign government was told nothing was found and didn't make any additional requests, the FBI official said.

The officials said the FBI has not connected the Tsarnaev brothers to any terror groups here or aboard.

Suspect 2 shot, is down and surrounded in Watertown neighborhood
WATERTOWN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A number of gun shots were fired near Franklin Street in Watertown Friday night and it was believed that suspect number 2 in the Boston Marathon bombings had been shot.

FOX 25's Bob Ward reported that as many 30 shots were fired in the neighborhood. Ward reported that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the man known as suspect 2, was shot by police.

Ward, citing sources, said that Tsarnaev was still alive, was moving and was surrounded. FOX 25's Jarrod Holbrook reported that Tsarnaev was seen in a boat with a canvas cover. He was reportedly poking holes in the canvas.

Holbrook reported hearing the shots being fired in rapid succession, "like a roll of firecrackers" shortly after a "Shelter in Place" order had been lifted in Boston and its surrounding area.

A bomb squad robot had been deployed at the scene to check the boat for explosives.

SWAT teams, sharpshooters, FBI agents, and police took command of the tense and locked-down streets of Boston and its suburbs Friday in an all-out hunt for the 19-year-old Tsarnaev after his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, died in a desperate getaway attempt overnight.

The two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing killed an MIT police officer and hurled explosives at police in a car chase and gun battle overnight Thursday that left Tamerlan dead and Dzhokhar on the run.

Officials said Dzhokhar fled the Watertown scene on foot.

#3  A point that's been bothering me, if they planned this why exactly did he become a US citizen? The only thing I can think of is this exact scenario, where he HAS to be read his rights as a Citizen on American soil, and thus the "message", whatever it is, gets out. The timing would work too if they planned to hit the NY marathon but instead got canceled out.

Also reports of 2men 1woman being arrested as well. Are we talking about...a cell?

#7  Exactly, in the fall. That's the one taken ALIVE. And I just read on Hot-Air, read his Miranda Rights. Which TECHNICALLY was the correct action under the law as it is currently written.

TW, he was given Asylum in Virgina in 2002. That's probably what you were thinking of for Tsarnaev. Though given our immigration system it might as well of been. I haven't read anything about the elders or fathers immigration status's.

Kerry to Congress on Benghazi: Get over it!
Oh no. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry doesn’t think the terrorist attack in Benghazi is important anymore, but placated lawmakers who still want answers from the Obama administration.

Kerry testified Wednesday before the House Foreign Affairs Committee for the first time since becoming secretary in a hearing called, “Securing U.S. Interests Abroad: The FY 2014 Foreign Affairs Budget.”

U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher told Kerry he believes Americans were lied to about Benghazi by the Obama administration and asked Kerry if he was committed to answering the many questions still surrounding the events before, during and after the attack on the U.S. Consulate.

Kerry pooh-poohed all Rohrabacher’s concerns, but promised to give Congress whatever it is they think they haven’t already been given.

Kerry actually said about a terrorist attack that got four American diplomats killed:

Well, before I became Secretary, Congressman, I believe I got the answers to who was evacuated and had a pretty good sense of what happened there. But now that I am the Secretary and I am responsible to you and the Congress, I can promise you that if you’re not getting something that you have evidence of or you think you ought to be getting, we’ll work with you. And I will appoint somebody to work directly with you starting tomorrow, with you, Mr. Chairman, to have a review of anything you don’t think you’ve gotten that you’re supposed to get. Let’s get this done with, folks.

Let’s figure out what it is that’s missing, if it’s legitimate or if it isn’t. I don’t think anybody lied to anybody. And let’s find out exactly, together, what happened, because we need — we got a lot more important things to move on to and get done. [Emphasis added].

Chechen President Says American Upbringing to Blame
[WEEKLYSTANDARD] The Chechen president has apparently released a statement that blames the suspects' American upbringing for their alleged terrorist activity.

"Tragic events have taken place in Boston. A terrorist attack killed people. We have already expressed our condolences to the people of the city and to the American people. Today, the media reports, one Tsarnaev was killed as [police] tried to arrest him. It would be appropriate if he was locked away
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
and investigated, and the circumstances and the extent of his guilt determined. Apparently, the security services needed to calm down the society by any means necessary," says Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov, according to BuzzFeed.

"Any attempt to draw a connection between Chechnya and Tsarnaevs -- if they are guilty -- is futile. They were raised in the United States, and their attitudes and beliefs were formed there. It is necessary to seek the roots of this evil in America. The whole world must struggle against terrorism -- that we know better than anyone else. We hope for the recovery of all the victims, and we mourn with the Americans."

HANSON: A nation of promiscuous prudes
[WASHINGTONTIMES] More than 500 people were killed in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
last year. Yet Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel still found time to berate the fast-food franchise Chick-fil-A for not sharing "Chicago values" apparently because its founder does not approve of same-sex marriage.

Two states have legalized marijuana, with more to come. Yet social taboos against tobacco smoking make it nearly impossible to light up a cigarette in public places. Marijuana, like alcohol, causes far greater short-term impairment than does nicotine. But legal cigarette smoking is now seen as a corporate-sponsored, uncool and dirty habit that leads to long-term health costs for society on the lam in a way homegrown, hip and mostly illegal pot smoking apparently does not.

Graphic language, nudity and sex are now commonplace in movies and on cable television. At the same time, there is now almost no tolerance for casual and slang banter in the media or the workplace. A boss who calls an employee "honey" might face accusations of fostering a hostile work environment, yet a television producer whose program shows an 18-year-old having sex does not. Many colleges offer courses on lurid themes from masturbation to prostitution, even as campus sexual-harassment suits over hurtful language are at an all-time high.

A federal judge in New York recently ruled that the so-called morning-after birth-control pill must be made available to all "women" regardless of age or parental consent, and without a prescription. The judge determined that it was unfair for those under 16 to be denied access to such emergency contraceptives. However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
if vast numbers of girls younger than 16 need after-sex options to prevent unwanted pregnancies, will there be a flood of statutory rape charges lodged against older teenagers who had such consensual relations with younger girls?

Governor Cuomo Says Boston Bombing Part of 'New Normal'
[POLITICKER] Mayor Michael Nanny Bloomberg may have canceled his morning radio appearance today in response to the ongoing manhunt for a suspect involved in Monday's deadly bombing attack on the Boston Marathon, but another top New York official, Governor Andrew Sonny Cuomo, scheduled his own radio interview on The Capitol Pressroom soon after. Mr. Cuomo directly addressed the high-profile situation in the Bay State by employing a phrase he previously used to describe climate change in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy: "the new normal."

"It's a terrible situation in Boston. And, unfortunately, ... one gets the sense that this is more reflective of the 'new normal,' if you will," he explained. "So much of society is changing so rapidly. We talk about a 'new normal' when it comes to climate change and adjusting to a change in the weather patterns. 'New normal' when it comes to public security in a post-9/11 world. Where these random acts of violence, which at one time were implausible, now seem all-too-frequent."

Additionally, Mr. Cuomo said New York police units are on stand-by and assisting authorities in Boston. The governor further noted that he worked with Massachusetts Governor Deval (Whoa! Nice drapes!) Patrick during their shared time in former President Bill Clinton's administration some years ago.

"I have been in contact. Our offices have been in contact and our respective officials have been talking," he said. "I'm wanted him to know that we're here for him. The authorities have been cooperating. We have a very good relationship with Massachusetts. They've been very kind to us in many circumstances ... I'm a big fan of Deval's. We were together in the Clinton administration so I know him personally and he's doing a very good job."

It's the new normal because of our failed immigration policies. Mexicans, Somalis, Soddies, Chechnyans...anybody and everybody is free to walk right into this country. We pay for their EBT cards, their health care and their kids' education. Then we act surprised when they commit atrocities. But, hey, as long as they vote donk it's the new normal. Bombing suspects followed Harry Potter-hating Australian sheikh
[FOXNEWS] Four months ago, the Boston bombing suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed yesterday in a shootout with police, uploaded to his YouTube Channel an eight-minute lecture by the radical Australian Mohammedan preacher Sheikh Feiz Mohammed denouncing the Harry Potter movies for glorifying and promoting paganism.

"How can you allow your children to watch this?" the sheikh demands in the table-thumping lecture. "This film glorifies, magnifies, promotes paganism...What does Harry Potter do and his devilish schoolmates, what do they do? They cast spells, learn magic, brew potions, learn how to tell the future...And this is called harmless."

He condemns the Harry Potter movies for being built on shirk -- the sin of worshipping someone or something other than Allah.

Tsarnaev also uploaded Russian-language videos of the preacher Abdel al-Hamid al-Juhani, who has been influential on Jihadists in Chechnya and the Russian Caucusus.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Putin: Boston bombings "disgusting" crime
[SEATTLEPI] Russia's President Vladimir Putin
...Second President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Because of constitutionally mandated term limits he is the current Prime Minister of Russia. His sock puppet, Dmitry Medvedev, was installed in the 2008 presidential elections. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law. During his eight years in office Russia's economy bounced back from crisis, seeing GDP increase, poverty decrease and average monthly salaries increase. During his presidency Putin passed into law a series of fundamental reforms, including a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile...
has called the Boston Marathon kabooms a "disgusting" crime.

Putin has offered assistance in investigating Monday's twin bombings in Boston that killed three people and maimed more than 170, saying in a condolences note Tuesday that the international community should come together to fight terrorism.

He followed up on that Thursday while opening the Ice Hockey Under 18 World Championship in Sochi, Russia's Black Sea resort that will host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Speaking before the game of Russian and U.S. teams, Putin called for a moment of silence and offered condolences. He said that the fact that the Boston attack occurred during a major sports event made it "particularly disgusting."

[WASHINGTONTIMES] Former Florida Rep. Allen West issued a scathing statement on his Facebook page Friday, in response to the ongoing manhunt for one of the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings.

"Let me be very clear. The terrorist attack in Boston and evolving events indicate we have a domestic radical Islamic terror problem in America," he wrote. "No more excuses. No more apologies. We are in a war of ideological wills and we shall prevail."

He also recounted previous congressional attempts to hold hearings on radical Islamism.

"When Rep. Peter King
...U.S. Representative for New York's 3rd (central Long Island) congressional district, serving since 1993. He is of the Publican persuasion and is known for his active support for the IRA Irish republican movement...
attempted to have hearings on domestic terrorism, he was attacked for being racist," Mr. West wrote.

He said: "We must no longer allow the disciples of political correctness and the acolytes of the Moslem Brüderbund (CAIR, ISNA, MPAC, MAS) to preach to us some misconceived definition of tolerance and subservience."

How many more bombings and bungled "investigations" will it take before people realize the president is NOT on our side? How many more hurried deportations, Fast and Furious operations and Benghazis? How many more American citizens will have to die?

#6  The US is now, the largest exporter of oil in the world, thanks to Eagle Ford, North Dakota and Fracking everywhere, we are exporting oil and natural gas at a breathtaking rate.

The Saudis don't have the energy leverage over us they used to. Our exports of oil will help clean up the current account mess and may even bring enough petrodollars home to bust the Saudis chops.

I expect them, the KSA, to be a bit more cooperative with us in the future with our new found largess of oil.

BTW, both Iraq and Libya have oodles of oil. If we can keep Iraq together and get them pumping oil, we will be fine. The Saudis may yet find themselves out of leverage.

#8  We are not yet a net exporter of oil, though (if current trends continue) we will be by 2020 or so.

We do not yet have the inter-connectivity required (e.g., pipelines) to move all the oil we have to the refineries that can handle it.

The trend is good but the Saoodis still have us in a vise.

And even if we were fine, the rest of the world is not. Given the interdependence we all have on trade, etc., if the Saoodis played hard ball we'd have problems.

A good liberal friend of mine (really) once remarked in a candid moment that the Saoodis sitting on top of all that oil was a "geographic accident" that could be rectified. If we had a sufficiently devious president in power we'd have seven new states in the Union (that's how you get to 57, Barack).

Chechen Terror Usually Aimed at Russia
[ONLINE.WSJ] Except that this was Moslem terrorism, inspired by the usually gruesome vids available on YouTube, the anti-Americanism (and by extension, anti-Westernism) that's been fostered since early in the Cold War, and the desire to belong to something bigger than themselves. Before the fetish with Islam, the followers believed in Communism or Naziism or whatever man on horseback was current where they lived.

Chechen nationalism wasn't Islamic when it first blossomed in 1991, but it was brutal. Djokar Dudaev wasn't a devout Moslem. But once the movement fell under the sway of the Salafists, and particularly Shamil Bashaev, it plumbed new depths of brutality in homage to Allah. Highlights included shelling a maternity hospital, the Nord Ost theater incident where they took an entire audience hostage and had to be gassed out, and of course the atrocity at Beslan, which was easily as depraved as anything done by Nazis.

#3  Chechen Nationalism as you refer to it did not blossom in 1991, it is 200 years old. A little research on the first Shamil Basaev might be informational.
The second and modern Shamil Basaev was a MERCENARY. He fought with the Russians in the Abkhaz war. When the old guard was killed off (Basaev, Alaev, Maskhadov, etc.), radical foreign fighters found santuary in the Mtn.s of Chechnya and these inidviduals brought a fundamentalist Islam into a leaderless vacuum with a population of unemployed angry kids who were raised in a decade of warfare. Brutality goes both ways, I wouldn't exactly call the Russian's the "nice" guys then or now.
It seems a lot heavy on the, rather thin, Chechen ethnicity aspect of these scumbags and not enough on the radical Islamic ideology, which is nationless and the real driver, IMHO.

Bombing Suspect Traveled to Russia Through NYC Last Year
Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev flew in and out of John F. Kennedy Airport last year and was out of the country for six months, and investigators said they want to know if he received any terror training while he was overseas, NBC 4 New York has learned.
Might have just gone home to see the family. But now we have to depend on Putin and the Russian secret police for information. That's not a comforting thought...
Travel records obtained by NBC 4 New York show Tsarnaev left New York on Jan. 12, 2012 for Sheremetyevo, Russia. He stayed overseas and returned to JFK on July 17. The travel documents show a photo of a bearded Tsarnaev. The documents show the terror suspect was born on Oct. 21, 1986 and first entered the U.S. through JFK on July 19, 2003.
Bearded? No beard at the Marathon. Was he more pious when he was traveling or was he trying to blend in on Marathon Day?
The documents show it was not until Friday that U.S. officials determined he was “a person or instrument that may pose a threat to the security of the United States.”

Tsarnaev was killed amid the shootout with police early Friday. The manhunt was continuing for his brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was born on July 22, 1993, the records show. They also said he flew to the U.S. on April 12, 2002 with his family, which applied for asylum. The family was granted legal permanent residence on March 2, 2007, and Tsarnaev became a citizen on Sept. 11, 2012. The documents show there is no record of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev leaving the United States.
Other news reports say that little brother idolized big brother (not surprising). Perhaps big brother got radicalized (before or after his trip to Russia) and then spread it to the little brother.

Olde Tyme Religion
Saudi Media, Officials In Anti-Terror Campaign
[MEMRI.ORG] Dr. Muhammad Nahed Al-Kuwaiz, a columnist for the Saudi daily Al-Riyadh, wrote that the Muslims must acknowledge the existence of Islamic terrorism, which stems from an ideology of extremism and takfir (accusing others of heresy), and called to purge Islam of this ideology:
"When one person carries out an attack we call him a terrorist or a retard or a psychopath. When two people carry out an attack we say they are both terrorists and lunatics. But when ten people carry out an attack we [start] wondering about their motives. So when hundreds of members of the same religion [carry out] bombings all over the place -- in mosques, markets, hotels, [public] gathering places, planes, and [subway] tunnels -- and are later identified as Muslims, we have no choice but to admit that this is Islamic terrorism.

"Some are angered by the equation drawn between Islam and terrorism, and argue that Islam is a religion of love. This is true of the real Islam, but today's Islam is infected with the virus of zealotry, extremism, and terrorism -- not just [the Islam] of the terrorists and murderers, but [the Islam] of those who sympathize with them and support them. We must admit that Islamic terrorism exists, and that the faith needs to be purged of the ideology of exclusion and takfir. Denying this reality will not bring change, but pitch us into total ruin.

"I will not [try to] anticipate the findings of the investigation of the Boston attack, because there are sufficient [examples]. Not long before the Boston attack, a suicide bomber blew himself up in a mosque in Pakistan, murdering dozens of worshipers, including children. Another blew himself up in Iraq, causing similar devastation. Tomorrow will bring with it more of this Islamic terrorism, since Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, and Syria [also] have Islamic suicide bombers who act out of extremist ideological inclinations... All this is done in the name of Islam by religious Muslims who believe they are close to Paradise and want to shorten their path there.

"Considering the ease with which young boys and girls are recruited to put on suicide vests and sacrifice themselves, [do we need] to ask why? Will we [not] find the answer in the sermons and religious curricula in Southeast Asian countries, or in the words of sheikhs who encourage strife in the media or on TV channels that purport to support peace?

"The important question is, when will Islam recover from the virus of terrorism?"

NYPD arrests Muslim teen for taunting Jewish subway rider: riot ensues
Is it something in the Labrador Current this week?

Put under WoT because of the hate crime angle. The perp, as you'll read, just about made it all the way to an SJS situation...
The attempted arrest of an allegedly hate-mongering teen aboard a Brooklyn subway quickly turned into a wild showdown between cops and a roiled mob, according to sources and video obtained by the Daily News.

The melee began when suspect Stephan Stowe, 17, and a group of eight friends approached a Jewish man wearing a yarmulke aboard a Brooklyn-bound 3 train just before 3 p.m. Monday, police sources said Wednesday.

"Assalamu Alaikum," Stowe said to the man, using a common greeting among Muslims that means, "Peace be with you," court documents allege.

When the man ignored the greeting, Stowe allegedly became combative.
I think that translates into Stowe was looking for a fight and was going to have one, regardless of how hard he had to work to provoke a situation...
"You think you're better than me?" the teen allegedly said. "We are cousins."

"No we're not," The man shot back, and told Stowe to leave him alone.
Which to a normal person would have ended the situation then and there, but Mr. Stowe (the one looking for a fight, with his home boyz as backup) decided to escalate:
The suspect then started hurling ethnic slurs and called the man disrespectful, according to court papers.

As the tension aboard the train escalated, the man whipped out his cell phone and took a photo of Stowe, who then snatched the phone and deleted the photo, police sources said.
I can see wanting to get a picture, but that's going to be interpreted by the perp(s) in only one way...
"I'm going to kill you right now," Stowe said, according to cops and court records.
That's assault and incitement to murder right there.
He then swore at the man, according to cops and court records, and in an apparent reference to the Holocaust added, "They should have killed all of you."
And that makes it a 'hate crime', though of course progressives (with moist eyes and tender feelings) won't classify it as such...
The man managed to swipe his phone back from Stowe and ran to alert the conductor, police sources said. As the train pulled into the Eastern Parkway/Brooklyn Museum stop, cops were waiting to collar Stowe, police sources said.

But that's when a mob rose up against the cops. A pair of police officers struggled to detain Stowe inside the empty train while the angry onlookers swarmed the station's platform snapping video and yelling at cops, video first published by Gothamist on Wednesday shows. Alarmed by the swelling crowd, the cops called for backup, police sources said.

Amid the chaos -- and while Stowe appeared to resist arrest -- a woman aboard the train, Sheniqua Joseph, 22, got involved, according to police and the video.

After four minutes of alleged badgering of the officers, cops tried to place Joseph under arrest, video shows, and eventually slammed her against a wall while she went ballistic. Joseph is accused of throwing a haymaker at one of the cops and kicking him in the stomach, court records allege.
Bad move Sheniqua. What we don't know is whether she was with Stowe's 'gang' in the first place or was just an on-looker who decided to hassle the cops.
She was arraigned on charges of obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
How about for assault?
Stowe was arraigned on eight charges, including grand larceny, which was charged as a hate crime, resisting arrest and harassment.

Stowe and Joseph could not be reached for comment Wednesday night. The victim of the alleged hate crime declined to comment.

#1  Im guessing Stowes buddies used their cell phones to call their buddies to meet them at the platform when they realized the conductor had called the police.

Either that or the whole thing started because they knew they were gonna meet the mob and thus felt invincible.

2nd Uncle Of Bombing Suspects: ‘Yesterday He Called Me’
BOSTON – A second uncle of the two men suspected in the Boston Marathon bombings says the men have been in the U.S. for seven or eight years.
They apparently had refugee status because of the problems in Chechnya. If I run the FBI that whole 'refugee' list gets a major review ASAP, even if each and every person had been 'thoroughly' vetted prior to gaining entry to our country.
Alvi Tsarni told CBS News because of some issues in the family, he hadn’t spoken to the two men for a couple of years.
Perhaps the boys were getting to be more pious than the uncle, a man from an older generation, was comfortable with?
However, he says Tamerlan called him yesterday to apologize for that.

“Yesterday he called me and said ‘forgive me,’” Alvi Tsarni said.
For not calling?
Alvi Tsarni expressed disbelief that his nephews could have committed such a horrific act. “I’m sorry too if he did this. It’s crazy… It’s not possible… I cannot believe he did this,” he said.
Afraid so, Uncle. Just from the way you express your denial you know it's more than possible.

Police Investigating Car from Mass. in Niagara Falls
Remember: early media reports are often incomplete or flat out wrong.
NIAGARA FALLS, NY - A high ranking source tells 2 On Your Side that the traffic stop in Niagara Falls this morning was routine, but police are searching items in the vehicle and residents are being asked to stay away from the area.

Police stopped the car at 19th and Elmwood in the Falls. The vehicle has Massachusetts license plates.

A source earlier this morning said the two occupants were Russian nationals, but police now say that is not true.

The FBI tells 2 On Your Side they are aware of the situation and that their joint-terrorism task force is assisting the NYSP.
Update from WIVB News: False alarm.
As a precaution, authorities investigated the vehicle to determine whether it was safe. A remote controlled robot tested the vehicle. Belongings from the vehicle were all tested, and all items tested negative.

Mayor Paul Dyster says the people inside the vehicle are U.S. citizens.

Timeline of Islamicist attacks for New York, 2001 to date
Barry Rubin, posting over at Yid with Lid, posts an interesting timeline of attacks, planned and foiled, for the New York area since 9/11. When people ask "why would Chechnyan youths come to America and plan terror attacks?", the answer is that of the scorpion to the frog: it's what they do.

Full credit to Barry for the list and a big thank you to the Yid. Barry, in case you're wondering, is director of the Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center and editor of the Middle East Review of International Affairs (MERIA) Journal.
Since September 11, 2001, there have been 18 known terrorist attacks planned in New York City and they all have something in common: the worldview of the perpetrators. In some cases, they were called off by al-Qaeda:

  • In 2002, Iyman Faris, a U.S.-based al-Qaeda operative, planned to cut the Brooklyn Bridge's support cables at the direction of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

  • In 2003, al-Qaeda had planned to release cyanide gas in New York City's subway system and attack other public places.

  • In 2006, Uzair Paracha, a Brooklyn resident, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after he was convicted of attempting to help al-Qaeda operative Majid Khan enter the United States to attack gas tanks. Paracha's father worked with al-Qaida to smuggle explosives - including possibly nuclear weapons - into the United States using the New York office of Paracha's import-export business.

  • Dhiren Barot (aka Issa al-Hindi) was sentenced to life in prison by a United Kingdom court in 2006 after pleading guilty to planning to attack several targets both in the UK and the U.S., including the New York Stock Exchange, Citigroup's headquarters in Midtown Manhattan, and the Prudential Building in Newark, NJ.

  • Shahawar Matin Siraj and James Elshafay plotted in 2004 to place explosive devices in the Herald Square subway station in Manhattan.

  • In July 2006, the FBI revealed it had uncovered a plot involving an attack on a PATH commuter train tunnel connecting New York and New Jersey by Islamists, the placement of suicide bombers on trains, and the destruction of the retaining wall separating the Hudson River from the World Trade Center site in the hopes of causing massive flooding in the city's Financial District.

  • Beginning in 2006, four Islamists plotted to detonate the jet-fuel storage tanks and supply lines for John F. Kennedy Airport in order to cause wide-scale destruction and economic disruption in an attack they intended to dwarf 9/11.

  • In a series of three trials spanning 2008 to 2010, eight Muslims were convicted in Britain of attempting to simultaneously detonate explosives in seven airliners traveling from London to several North American metropolises, including New York.

  • Bryant Neal Vinas, of Long Island, New York, traveled to Pakistan with an intent to die fighting against American forces in Afghanistan. In summer of 2008, Vinas spoke to al-Qaeda about targeting the Long Island Railroad using a suitcase bomb that would be left in a car and set to detonate.

  • In May 2009, four Islamists placed what they believed were functioning bombs outside of Jewish targets in the Bronx neighborhood of Riverdale and additionally constructed plans to fire missiles at military transport planes at Stewart International Airport near Newburgh, NY.

  • In September 2009, the New York City subway system was targeted for attack by three individuals supporting al-Qaeda who planned to set off bombs in the subway during rush hour shortly after the eighth anniversary of 9/11.

  • Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani-American residing in Connecticut, attempted to detonate a car bomb in Times Square on May 1, 2010.

  • Ahmed Ferhani, an Queens resident born in Algeria, along with Mohammad Mamdouh, a Moroccan immigrant, were arrested in May 2011 in an NYPD operation in which Ferhani purchased a hand grenade, three semi-automatic pistols and ammunition from an undercover detective. NYPD's investigation into the pair revealed their desire to attack a synagogue in New York City.

  • Jose Pimentel, a native of the Dominican Republic and convert to Islam, was charged with plotting to detonate bombs in and around New York City in November 2011.

  • Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, a 21-year-old native of Bangladesh residing in the U.S. on a student visa, was arrested in October 2012 as he attempted to remotely detonate what he believed was a bomb in front of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in lower Manhattan.

  • Raees Alam Qazi and Sheheryar Alam Qazi, Pakistan-born brothers, were arrested by federal authorities in Florida in November 2012 for charges relating to a plan to bomb popular New York City landmarks including Times Square, Wall Street and city theaters.

  • Jesse Morton, a New York City-based Muslim convert, was apprehended in Morocco and pleaded guilty in February 2012 to conspiring to solicit murder, making threatening communications, and using the Internet to place others in fear, most notably through his website Revolution Muslim.

  • Alessa and Carlos Almonte, both of New Jersey, pleaded guilty in March 2011 to conspiring to murder persons outside of the United States on behalf of al-Shabaab, the Somalia-based, al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group.

  • And even this list doesn't include the 2007 plot to attack nearby Fort Dix by a half-dozen Islamists since that was handled by the New Jersey authorities.

Iran triples installation of centrifuges
Iranian technicians have tripled the number of uranium enrichment centrifuges they have installed over the past three months to 600, diplomats warned Wednesday.

The high-tech machines aren’t yet producing enrichment uranium, the diplomats said in a CBS report, and some are only partly installed. But the report is worrisome, in that it is another sign of Iran’s move to develop nuclear weaponry, as the West fears.

Boston: 1 suspect dead, 2nd on loose
With a bomb strapped to his chest, one of the Boston Marathon suspects was killed early Friday after he and his accomplice brother robbed a 7-Eleven, shot a police officer to death, carjacked an SUV and hurled explosives in an extraordinary firefight with law enforcement.

The suspects are brothers of Chechen origin with the last name Tsarnaev
The second suspect -- the one in the white hat in photos released by the FBI -- was on the loose. Gov. Deval Patrick ordered the entire city of Boston and some suburbs to stay inside during what he called a "massive manhunt," and police began a house-to-house search. Boston shut down its buses and subway system.

The suspects are brothers of Chechen origin with the last name Tsarnaev, law enforcement officials told NBC News. The suspect at large, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is 19, was born in Kyrgyzstan and has a Massachusetts driver's license, they said. The dead suspect was identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, born in Russia.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was run over by a vehicle during the firefight, law enforcement officials told NBC News. Law enforcement officials also told NBC News that the brothers entered the United States with family in 2002 or 2003, and that Tamerlan Tsarnaev became a legal permanent resident in 2007.

The chaotic sequence of events started six hours after the FBI triggered a nationwide manhunt by releasing photos of the suspects, believed responsible for detonating two bombs at the marathon finish line Monday, killing three people and injuring 176.

The suspect at large was described by authorities as light-skinned and with brown, curly hair, and wearing a gray hoodie.

"There is a terrorist on the loose," a law enforcement officer said at a press conference before dawn.

Police shut a 4-mile stretch of streets between Cambridge, Mass., and Watertown because they could be littered with unexploded devices, and they began a door-to-door search in Watertown. A convoy of at least 20 vehicles, including military-style humvees and buses, was seen descending on the town.

More than 1 million people in Boston and the suburbs were ordered to stay inside and lock their doors.

"I just want to speak to the community of Watertown. We need your help now. We are asking everyone to shelter into your place," Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau said. "The Watertown community has always stood strong. We need them to do that today."

Harvard University, Boston University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, other colleges and Boston public schools all closed. Emerson University closed and told students to stay where they were.

Andrew Kitzenberg, who lives in Watertown, said he saw the two men shooting at six police cars from 70 or 80 yards away.

"There was a long exchange of gunfire," told NBC News in an interview. He said that he saw the suspects use what looked like a pressure-cooker bomb.

"I saw them light this bomb. They threw it towards the officers," he said. "It created a significant decoy, and there was smoke that covered our entire street."

Law enforcement officials said the tumult began just before 11 p.m., when the suspects approached a police officer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and shot him in the head. The two then stole the officer's cruiser, robbed a nearby 7-Eleven, carjacked a Mercedes SUV and briefly kidnapped the driver, the sources said.

The suspects threw explosives out the window during the chase that followed, they said. A Boston transit police officer was shot and wounded, authorities said.

The dead suspect -- the man in the black hat from the FBI photos -- had an improvised explosive device strapped to his chest, law enforcement officials said.

Kitzenberg said that the firefight ended when one of the shooters ran toward the Watertown officers and ultimately fell to the ground. Kitzenberg said he could not tell whether the man was tackled or had been shot. The other drove the SUV through a line of police offcers at the end of the street, he said.

#3  I'm quite certain the FBI senior agents have a lot on their minds this morning, and I don't want to be a Monday morning quarterback. I do hope there is a team looking for the handlers.

My wife is watching CNN right now; that network is taking pains to assure us all that just because the brothers are from Chechnya we shouldn't assume they are terrorists. Of course not, non-terrorists plant bombs and gun down police officers all the time. As Fred says, you could look it up.

I think we know better. These two were part of a terrorist cell. Why activated now? For what purpose? Who else was in the cell? Who was the handler, the money-man and the delivery-man? How did two 'students' like an apparently comfortable life in Boston?

And the big question, of course: how many other cells like this one?

#5  Tamerlan = Tamerlane, aka Timur.

A bloody Moslem warlord who wanted to be the Caliph but was not one of the Quryash (tribe of the prophet) so he had to settle for "big cheese" came out of Mongolia as a new Ghengis.

BUT, there are still people swearing that this was an Orthodox Christian and had nothing to do with Islam, nope, nothing to see here.

#7  The media is already going through their predictable Politically correct machinations. What could drive these two young men to commit such a heinous act? Chechnya? But they want independence from Russia…why attack the US. And of course the obligatory…how did they become radicalized?
More then a decade after 9/11 and they still can't say the blindingly obvious. It’s Islam.

#8  Timur the lame was quite a guy.

He couldn't be caliph (per AlanC's comment). He also couldn't be a khan because he wasn't descended from Ghengis Khan. He was a devoted muslim.

He and his hordes murdered over 10 million and caused the death via starvation or overwork of another 5 to 10 million. Among his victims were several million muslims.

#18  The father of suspected Boston Marathon bomber called on his son today to give up peacefully, but warned the U.S. that if his son is killed "all hell will break loose."
Anzor Tsarnaev spoke to ABC News from his home in the Russian city of Makhachkala as Boston police carried out an intense dragnet for his son Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, survived a running gun battle with police during the night that left an MIT security officer dead and a Boston cop badly wounded. His older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died in the shootout.
The father said he spoke to his sons by phone earlier this week. "We talked about the bombing. I was worried about then," Anzor Tsarnaev said.
He said his sons reassured him, saying, "Everything is good, Daddy. Everything is very good."
The elder Tsarnaev insisted that his sons were innocent, but said he would appeal to his son to "surrender peacefully."
"Give up. Give up. You have a bright future ahead of you. Come home to Russia," the dad said.
The father warned, however, "If they killed him, then all hell would break loose."
"If they kill my second child, I will know that it is an inside job, a hit job. The police are to blame," the father told ABC News. "Someone, some organization is out to get them."

#24  Of course they aren't terrorists or muslim, it would not fit the MSM or POTUS narrative.

I think we are in it for the long haul. Now that Islamic fanatics know how easy it is to cause great harm to the western "devil" we are going to have hell to pay.

Napolitano and Holder and all of those politically correct Kumbiyah, if we could understand them and get them to like us they wouldn't do this crowd has to understand the nature of the struggle.

As long as we are NOT Moslem, we are infidels and as infidels we are targets of Jihad and conversion by any means fair or foul, violence, rape, murder, you name it.

Tamerlane, massacred the entire city of Baghdad, killing over 5 million, he told his troops that each of them had to bring him two heads. He built pyramids of human heads at the four corners of the city over 100 feet square each. He threw all of the books and scrolls in the University of Baghdad library into the river and the river turned black from the ink.

The Moslems for some peculiar reason recognize Tamerlane as a great "Defender of the Faith" possibly because he killed so many people. They seem to like historic figures that massacre innocents.

#25  "The river went red with blood, then black with ink." The account I read gave him a title to match slaughterer of the innocents and scurge of knowledge - savior of Christianity. IIRC, the western islamic empire was knocking on the gates of Constantinople with victory in their grasp when tamerlame's army attacked the islamists, and kicking their asses so badly that the Byzantines covertly aided the turks. It set back the eventual capture of Constantinople; had it fallen then, there was little in the way of islam sweeping across eastern europe and beyond.

Actually this refers to Hülegü's conquest of Baghdad in 1258 where up to 800000 people are said to have been killed. Tamerlan is said to have killed up to 100000 (70000 most likely) when he reconquered rebellious Baghdad... certainly not 5 million. Baghdad never had that many inhabitants before the late 20th century,

Egyptian Fighters Join 'Lesser Jihad' in Syria
"Most of the Egyptian jihadists in Syria are not part of the Islamic movement in Egypt. They are independent, well-educated people with no financial or social problems; their motivation is based on true jihad that knows no borders and calls for the protection of Muslim women and children who are killed and raped on a daily basis in Syria."

The trip to Syria costs no more than the equivalent of $250, including visa fees and airline costs, Abu Rami told Al-Monitor.

"There is no way of assessing how many Egyptians are fighting in Syria, but there are at least a couple of hundred fighters," Abu Rami said.

He added, "We even resort to moving through the sewage system at times to avoid being detected by snipers."

In February, the Egyptian government broadcast on national television the names and photographs of 10 Egyptian "martyrs" killed in different conflict zones in Syria.

"There are also three Egyptian jihadists who were not listed in the official government count who had entered Syria through Lebanon and were martyred last February in a successful military operation in Homs, which led to the death of at least 400 officers and soldiers from the Assad regime, according to a statement released by the Syrian government itself," Abu Rami said.

There is no doubt that Skype has been the best method of communication between Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters and the Syrian diaspora trying to keep tabs on the situation on the ground.

#6  The bostonglobe.com has dropped its paywall & is open to anyone to peruse.
From its section on the incident:
WATERTOWN — One suspect in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings has been captured, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation. Another remains on the loose in Watertown after a firefight with police. Authorities have established a 20-block perimeter as they search for him.

A scene of chaos descended on Cambridge and Watertown late Thursday night and early Friday morning, as police confirmed an MIT police officer was shot and killed, and an apparent carjacking led police on a wild chase into Watertown.

Witnesses in Watertown said they heard explosions. Police officers were screaming about improvised explosive devices.

Authorities would not comment on whether the events were connected to Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings. At least one of the suspects in Watertown appeared to be a man in his 20s.

FBI agents were on the scene in Watertown.

“We are aware of the situation, we are being involved, and we are monitoring,” said an FBI representative who requested anonymity because of not being authorized to speak publicly. The FBI source said early Friday it is “too early to speculate” on a relation to the Marathon bombing.

Dozens of police officers descended on Watertown Square after midnight.

“This is still extremely dangerous,” an FBI agent said. The Cambridge bomb squad arrived in Watertown shortly after 1:30 a.m.

A man in handcuffs was being questioned by the FBI in the back of an ambulance.

At Arsenal Court and Arsenal Street in Watertown, an officer bellowed: “Ya gotta get outta here. There’s an active shooter here with an active explosive. Go!”

Peter Jennings, 33, said he was sleeping just before 1 a.m. in his home on Prentiss Street in Watertown when he was awakened by a huge boom.

“It sounded like a stick of dynamite went off,” he said. “I looked out the window, and it was like nothing I’ve ever seen – blue light after blue light after blue light.”

He said more than three dozen emergency vehicles with sirens blaring were heading down Rt. 16 West. He went to the end of his street, where some neighbors were gathering. The air, he said, smelled like “at the end of a fireworks show, like a wick smell.”

“I had a bad feeling because of what happened on Monday,” he said.

John Antonucci’s 79-year-old mother called him hysterical from her home in Laurel Street. She heard about five gun shots and didn’t know what to do.

“She was saying they’re running down the street shooting,” Antonucci said standing outside if yellow police tape. “She was crying so hard I couldn’t understand what she was talking about.”

UPDATE: Two Suspects Involved In MIT Officer Shooting And
Armed Carjacking
One suspect killed, second suspect at large
CAMBRIDGE -- Police are investigating a fatal
shooting of MIT campus police officer by two men who then committed an armed
carjacking in Cambridge, Middlesex Acting District Attorney Michael Pelgro,
Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas, and MIT Police Chief John DiFava
announced this evening.

At approximately 10:20 p.m. April 18, police received
reports of shots fired on the MIT campus. At 10:30 p.m., an MIT campus
police officer was found shot in his vehicle in the area of Vassar and Main
streets. According to authorities, the officer was found evidencing
multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Massachusetts General
Hospital and pronounced deceased.

Authorities launched an immediate investigation into the
circumstances of the shooting. The investigation determined that two males were
involved in this shooting.

A short time later, police received reports of an armed
carjacking by two males in the area of Third Street in Cambridge. The
victim was carjacked at gunpoint by two males and was kept in the car with the
suspects for approximately a half hour. The victim was released at a gas
station on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. He was not injured.

Police immediately began a search for the vehicle and were
in pursuit of the vehicle into Watertown. At that time, explosive devices
were reportedly thrown from car by the suspects. The suspects and police
also exchanged gunfire in the area of Dexter and Laurel streets. During
this pursuit, an MBTA Police officer was seriously injured and transported to
the hospital.

During the pursuit, one suspect was critically injured and
transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. An
extensive manhunt is ongoing in the Watertown area for the second suspect, who
is believed to be armed and dangerous.

The case is being investigated by local, state and federal
authorities working in cooperation. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb
Squad is assessing and removing any potentially explosive devices that may have
been thrown on the street in Watertown by the suspects.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

No further information is available at this time.

Law enforcement officials said the tumult began just before 11 p.m., when the suspects approached a police officer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and shot him in the head.
The two then stole the officer’s cruiser, robbed a nearby 7-Eleven, carjacked a Mercedes SUV and briefly kidnapped the driver, the sources said. The suspects threw explosives out the window during the chase that followed, they said.
The dead suspect — the man in the black hat from the FBI photos — had an improvised explosive device strapped to his chest, law enforcement officials said.
Andrew Kitzenberg, who lives in Watertown, said he saw the two men shooting at six police cars from 70 or 80 yards away.
“There was a long exchange of gunfire,” told NBC News in an interview. “They were also utilizing bombs, which sounded and looked like grenades, while engaging in the gunfight,” he said. “They also had what looked like a pressure-cooker bomb.”
A bullet from the gunbattle lodged in the wall of Kitzenberg’s apartment, he said.
Kitzenberg said that while he had a clear view of the shooters, he could not see their faces. He described them as “average size, average height.”

#39  Quoting a comment from boston.com:
There is a page at the Russian social network VKontakte (In Contact) with the name Dzhokhar Tsarnaev living in Boston and studying at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School.

The page mentions a school in Makhachkala, the capital of the Republic of Dagestan, as a place Tsarnaev studied between 1999 and 2001.

The Tsarnaev family moved to Dagestan from Kyrgyzstan in 2001, the school spokesman told the website RT. He Dzhokhar studied there for just one year and produced no particular impression, good or bad, on the teachers.

The page has but a handful of posts, most of them jokes. The owner’s last visit of the page was from a mobile phone shortly before the shooting in Boston started.

Some Russian-language comments on the page accuse Tsarnaev of being behind the bombing. They were posted after the news of a possible connection of a Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to the bombing broke.

#60  Just like Bin Laden he's a good guy when he's killing ruskies [sic], but bad when he turns and bites the hand that feeds.

If by "killing ruskies", you're referring to bin Ladin's time with the mujahideen in Afghanistan, I'll remind you there was a little thing called the Cold War going on then, where the objective was to keep the Soviet Union from expanding. The 'Russkies" were military personnel, not civilians. Old history to most, especially to the rampant vapid in the U.K., I know. But that's the way it was.

By most account (including one source here) Osama bin Ladin was more of a support/financier who tended not to be at the 'front', but that's rather beside the point. The point is, when your pet goes feral, you put it down. No apologies for that.

Actually, we do know Yawn. In previos incarnations he was PlaneSPeeker and ChuffingChuffChuff.

Oh. Then in that case I'll modify my remark to "deliberately and rampantly vapid in the U.K.".

Everyone in the village says, “Oh how awful.” The Zen master says, “We'll see.” The village is thrown into war and all the young men have to go to war. But, because of the broken foot, the boy stays behind. Everyone says, “Oh, how wonderful.” The Zen master says, “We'll see.”

Commie rebels free seven pro-government captives in the Philippines
Communist rebels have freed seven pro-government fighters they captured during various operations in the southern Philippines.

New People's Army leader Jorge Madlos said the NPA released Danny Sevillejo, Evangeline Cabodbod, and Leonardo Sevillejo - who were captured on April 14 in the village of Santa Juana in Surigao del Sur. Also Mario Lepanda, Toloy Lepanda, Rejoy Francisco and Janjan -- who were captured by the insurgents on April 15 at a checkpoint in the village of Don Alejandro in Agusan del Sur.

The release of the fighters -- who all underwent separate interrogations by the NPA - was attended by government officials and religious representatives and the media.

Madlos said the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, the political wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, ordered their release on humanitarian grounds. The release was based on the following grounds -- they have not committed any serious offense against the people and the revolution; and swore never again to commit their offenses, and to take steps to rectify their mistakes; and for having exhibited good behaviour during detention.

Madlos said, "The detention, investigation and release of these prisoners of war show the politico-military capability of the revolutionary forces in the different regions in Mindanao. These prove not only the capacity of the NPA, the Party and the NDFP to undertake such action, but more so the widespread and solid support of the masses toward the revolutionary movement in the island."
Yes, people still talk this way.
He said the NPA is still holding two policemen who were accused by insurgents of being behind extortion activities in Agusan del Sur. Madlos said, "The two are still under the process of preliminary investigation."

Militants targeted in Darra air strikes
[Dawn] Several beturbanned goons were killed when helicopter gunships pounded different areas of Darra Adamkhel near the border of Khyber Agency on Thursday, sources said.

They said that the beturbanned goons fled Khyber Agency and crossed into Darra Adamkhel after hideouts were targeted by security forces in the tribal region.

At least two helicopter gunships shelled Landikhel, Noor Badshah Kallay and Kharmatang area of Akhorwal in Darra Adamkhel for six hours when security forces felt movement of krazed killers, they added.

Sources said that ground forces also launched an operation in those areas to trace the krazed killers, who fled Akakhel area of Khyber Agency.

They said that the residents of Akakhel had burnt few houses of beturbanned goons and their harbourers few days ago. They said that the fleeing beturbanned goons were trying to enter Darra Adamkhel. Some arrests were made in the ground search operation, sources said.

In Khyber Agency, four houses and two hideouts were destroyed when jetfighters pounded positions of beturbanned goons in Bara tehsil on Thursday.

Sources said that the air sorties were conducted in Khawangi Zawa area of Akakhel early in the morning and later in the afternoon.

They said that four vacated houses were destroyed in the morning strikes while few krazed killer hideouts and a bunker were targeted in the afternoon. No casualty was reported in the air strikes as beturbanned goons had already vacated the area.

He added that Musharraf had appeared before the court under government security and returned with the same security. Senate wants 'exemplary' punishment to Musharraf
They're gonna start chucking shoes at him real soon now...
ISLAMABAD: Major political parties in the Upper House of parliament on Thursday, while holding former dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf responsible for the ongoing terrorist activities, and chastising him for abrogating constitution twice, disgracing judiciary and handing over Dr Aafia Siddiqui to the US, urged exemplary punishment to him.

The ANP, PPP-P and PML-N senators appreciated the decision of the Islamabad High Court against Musharaf, but regretted that instead of arresting him, the state security agencies helped him reach his farmhouse safely. The House was informed that there were two types of laws in the country, one for civilian and another for the armed forces. They noted that under civilian law, two sitting prime ministers were sentenced by the court, but under armed forces law, Musharraf was given safe passage instead of being arrested for his alleged crimes.

Some senators questioned why Rangers and commando escorts were given to Musharraf, while security for political leaders, who they said faced real threats and were being killed during political campaigns, was withdrawn. Senator Zahid Khan said that an elected prime minister was given a 30-second sentence and was sent home, but massive security was given to the dictator. "Why these double standards for civilian and military personnel," he questioned. Senator Khan said Musharraf's escape from the court is a shameful act and the world will question us over it.

PPP leader Senator Raza Rabbani regretted that a dictator who had arrested an elected prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, and disgraced the judiciary was allowed to go home under tight state security. He said the interim government must ponder why Musharraf was given so much security. Saeed Ghani of the PPP said Musharraf is responsible for the ongoing attacks on political leaders. He should be given punishment, but at the same time his associates should not be left free. He expressed his astonishment that the courts granted bail before arrest to Musharraf before his arrival.

Speaking on the occasion, PML-N's Senator Mushahidullah said the "crime list" of Musharraf is too long, saying he was involved in the killing of Akbar Bugti, Benazir Bhutto, handing over of Aafia Siddique to the US, Lal Masjid operation, taking the country to war. Today, he said some people are giving statements against Musharraf, but they were with him in the past. "Today, Musharraf ran away from the court and may escape the country tomorrow, however, today's decision of IHC was historic," he observed.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Kuwait makes good on $300M Syria aid
Kuwait has come through with the $300 million it pledged towards aid for stricken Syrians at a January donor's conference, the emirate and the United Nations said Thursday.

"We are ... matching our words with our deeds," Kuwait ambassador Dharar Abdul-Razzak Razzooqi told reporters in Geneva, detailing how the cash had been split between nine UN agencies and the International Committee of the Red Thingy Cross.

"We hope that other (countries) will come and fulfil the pledges that they have made at the Kuwait conference," he added.

The donor conference resulted in some $1.5 billion in pledges of aid -- of which $520 million was specifically to help people trapped inside Syria, with the rest going to help the nations hosting refugees. However, before Thursday, only about 30 percent of the promised cash had come through.

Kuwait's contribution brings the funding level of the January pledges to around 50 percent, according to the UN humanitarian agency, OCHA.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Doolittle Raiders Last Reunion
I had to post something earlier on this but the malware was an issue for me
At 97, retired Lt. Col. Richard Cole can still fly and land a vintage B-25 with a wide grin and a wave out the cockpit window to amazed onlookers.

David Thatcher, 91, charms admiring World War II history buffs with detailed accounts of his part in the 1942 Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, in which he earned a Silver Star.

Retired Lt. Col. Edward Saylor, 93, still gets loud laughs from crowds for his one liners about the historic bombing raid 71 years ago Thursday that helped to boost a wounded nation's morale in the aftermath of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.

Cole, Thatcher and Saylor -- three of the four surviving crew members from the history-making bombing run -- are at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle for a final public reunion of the Doolittle Raiders. They decided to meet at Eglin because it is where they trained for their top-secret mission in the winter of 1942, just weeks after the Japanese devastated the American fleet at Pearl Harbor.

The fourth surviving raider, 93-year-old Robert Hite, could not make the event.

"At the time of the raid, you know the war was on and it was just a mission we went on, we were lucky enough to survive it but it didn't seem like that big of a deal at the time. I spent the rest of the war in Europe and with the guys in Normandy and taking bodies out of airplanes and stuff and I didn't feel like a hero," Saylor said Wednesday following a ceremony in which an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter maintenance hangar at the base was named in his honor.

Saylor joked with the audience of young airmen and local dignitaries.

"My reaction when I out found out we were bombing Japan from an aircraft carrier was that it was too far to swim back home so we might as well go ahead with it," he said.

The 16 planes, loaded with one-ton bombs, took off from the aircraft carrier on less than 500 feet of runway. They had only enough fuel to drop their bombs and try to land in China with the hope that the Chinese would help them to safety.

"We were all pretty upbeat about it, we didn't have any bad thoughts about what was going to happen. We just did what we had to do," said Cole, who was Doolittle's co-pilot.

Wednesday's event at the base is part of a weeklong series of activities planned by the military and community leaders to honor the men.

Thomas Casey, business manager for the Raiders and a longtime fan of the men, said the four survivors have decided they can no longer keep up with the demands of group public appearances.

"The mission ends here in Fort Walton Beach on Saturday night, but their legacy starts then," he said.

Casey said he hopes everyone who has had a chance to interact with the men will keep their legacy alive. "I want them to tell the story to their children, their grandchildren, their neighbors and keep their story going because their story is worthwhile telling."

At each reunion is a case containing 80 silver goblets with the name of each raider inscribed right-side up and upside down on a single goblet. The men toast their fallen comrades each year and turn their goblets upside down in their honor.

#1  They've always reminded me of each other

Paul Revere's Ride

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.
He said to his friend, "If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm."

Then he said "Good-night!" and with muffled oar
Silently rowed to the Charlestown shore,
Just as the moon rose over the bay,
Where swinging wide at her moorings lay
The Somerset, British man-of-war;
A phantom ship, with each mast and spar
Across the moon like a prison bar,
And a huge black hulk, that was magnified
By its own reflection in the tide.

Meanwhile, his friend through alley and street
Wanders and watches, with eager ears,
Till in the silence around him he hears
The muster of men at the barrack door,
The sound of arms, and the tramp of feet,
And the measured tread of the grenadiers,
Marching down to their boats on the shore.

Then he climbed the tower of the Old North Church,
By the wooden stairs, with stealthy tread,
To the belfry chamber overhead,
And startled the pigeons from their perch
On the sombre rafters, that round him made
Masses and moving shapes of shade,--
By the trembling ladder, steep and tall,
To the highest window in the wall,
Where he paused to listen and look down
A moment on the roofs of the town
And the moonlight flowing over all.

Beneath, in the churchyard, lay the dead,
In their night encampment on the hill,
Wrapped in silence so deep and still
That he could hear, like a sentinel's tread,
The watchful night-wind, as it went
Creeping along from tent to tent,
And seeming to whisper, "All is well!"
A moment only he feels the spell
Of the place and the hour, and the secret dread
Of the lonely belfry and the dead;
For suddenly all his thoughts are bent
On a shadowy something far away,
Where the river widens to meet the bay,--
A line of black that bends and floats
On the rising tide like a bridge of boats.

Meanwhile, impatient to mount and ride,
Booted and spurred, with a heavy stride
On the opposite shore walked Paul Revere.
Now he patted his horse's side,
Now he gazed at the landscape far and near,
Then, impetuous, stamped the earth,
And turned and tightened his saddle girth;
But mostly he watched with eager search
The belfry tower of the Old North Church,
As it rose above the graves on the hill,
Lonely and spectral and sombre and still.
And lo! as he looks, on the belfry's height
A glimmer, and then a gleam of light!
He springs to the saddle, the bridle he turns,
But lingers and gazes, till full on his sight
A second lamp in the belfry burns.

A hurry of hoofs in a village street,
A shape in the moonlight, a bulk in the dark,
And beneath, from the pebbles, in passing, a spark
Struck out by a steed flying fearless and fleet;
That was all! And yet, through the gloom and the light,
The fate of a nation was riding that night;
And the spark struck out by that steed, in his flight,
Kindled the land into flame with its heat.
He has left the village and mounted the steep,
And beneath him, tranquil and broad and deep,
Is the Mystic, meeting the ocean tides;
And under the alders that skirt its edge,
Now soft on the sand, now loud on the ledge,
Is heard the tramp of his steed as he rides.

It was twelve by the village clock
When he crossed the bridge into Medford town.
He heard the crowing of the cock,
And the barking of the farmer's dog,
And felt the damp of the river fog,
That rises after the sun goes down.

It was one by the village clock,
When he galloped into Lexington.
He saw the gilded weathercock
Swim in the moonlight as he passed,
And the meeting-house windows, black and bare,
Gaze at him with a spectral glare,
As if they already stood aghast
At the bloody work they would look upon.

It was two by the village clock,
When he came to the bridge in Concord town.
He heard the bleating of the flock,
And the twitter of birds among the trees,
And felt the breath of the morning breeze
Blowing over the meadow brown.
And one was safe and asleep in his bed
Who at the bridge would be first to fall,
Who that day would be lying dead,
Pierced by a British musket ball.

You know the rest. In the books you have read
How the British Regulars fired and fled,---
How the farmers gave them ball for ball,
>From behind each fence and farmyard wall,
Chasing the redcoats down the lane,
Then crossing the fields to emerge again
Under the trees at the turn of the road,
And only pausing to fire and load.

So through the night rode Paul Revere;
And so through the night went his cry of alarm
To every Middlesex village and farm,---
A cry of defiance, and not of fear,
A voice in the darkness, a knock at the door,
And a word that shall echo for evermore!
For, borne on the night-wind of the Past,
Through all our history, to the last,
In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear
The hurrying hoof-beats of that steed,
And the midnight message of Paul Revere.

#2  Think about it.

The Imperial Japanese military forces were on a roll throughout the Pacific. Nothing could stop them then. The war news from Europe and the Pacific was bad.

Then Doolittle and his B-25 crews flew on this one way mission. They did minimal damage to Japan by their bombing raid, but they shook up the Japanese govt and military, and they gave US morale a great lift.

Hats off to all the Doolittle raiders, and to the four surviving crewmembers. The nation owes you a debt of gratitude. Well done. Well done.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Dagestan to let Putin pick governor
Russia's Dagestan region scrapped popular elections for governor on Thursday to allow President Putin to pick its leader under a new law that some call a setback for democracy.
That pretty well describes all of Russia, doesn't it?
Dagestan was the first province to make use of the law, signed by Putin this month, allowing each of Russia's 83 regions to scrap direct gubernatorial elections, introduced just last year as a concession to a wave of protests against Putin's dominance.

Putin has staked his reputation on the success of the 2014 Winter Olympics next February in the resort city of Sochi, close to the North Caucasus. The Kremlin is worried that elections there could cause unrest or bring in candidates whose loyalty is in question.

Putin fired Dagestan's governor in January and named Soviet-era politician Ramazan Abdulatipov, whom critics view as having deeper political ties to Moscow than to his native province, as acting governor.

Popular elections of governors were started after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Putin abolished them during his previous 2000-2008 presidency, citing the need for more control after deadly attacks by militants based in the North Caucasus. They were reintroduced last year in a concession to street protests by Russians.

Iran hit by second quake in days
[Dawn] A 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit northwestern Iran on Thursday, only days after a deadly temblor struck near the border with Pakistain, media reported citing the seismological centre at Tehran University.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in the latest quake which struck at 3:09 pm (local time), at a depth of eight kilometres, in the town of Tassouj.

"So far there are no reports of damage... We are in touch with the prefect of Tassouj and local authorities stand ready," to deal with any crisis, ISNA news agency reported quoting Khalil Saiie, a local official from East Azerbaijan province.

A Red Islamic Thingy official, also quoted by ISNA, said there was no immediate information about any casualties in Tassouj, or in the towns of Maragheh and Shabestar which also felt the quake. It was followed by two low-intensity aftershocks.

China-Japan-Koreas
Chinese Businesses at Risk of Forfeiting N.Korea Investments
A majority of Chinese businesspeople with investments in North Korea are apparently having problems recovering their money and being forced to leave the country.
That's a sure way to make Beijing unhappy...
Citing a Chinese businessman in the Chinese town of Dandong near the border with North Korea, the Chongqing Daily reported on Thursday that close to 100 Chinese investors have become long-term tenants at hotels in downtown Pyongyang as they wait to recover investments. A majority has been unsuccessful so far, and some have even been deported, according to the newspaper.

As the number of overdue payments increases at North Korean trading companies, deals based on credit have declined markedly in Dandong. Merchants now demand cash before handing over goods.
So the Norks understand capitalism after all...
Last August, one incident brought attention to the perils of investing in North Korea. Fertilizer and mineral producer Xiyang Group, based in Liaoning Province, was forced out of North Korea and had to forfeit its 240 million yuan investment in an iron mine.

"The biggest mistake Xiyang Group made was to ignore the dangers of investing in North Korea," said Jiao Qiming, head of a Chinese trading company in Dandong. "Once a dispute occurs, it is impossible to beat the North Korean government."

At present, some 2,000 businesses are operating in Dandong along the North Korea border and about 500 of them trade with the North.

Musharraf's farmhouse to be declared sub-jail: sources
[Dawn] Former president General (retd) Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
's farmhouse in the suburbs of Islamabad is likely to be declared a sub-jail in the wake of a high level meeting at the Presidency on Thursday night.

The decision to declare the Chak Shahzad farmhouse as a sub-jail is set to end the bizarre cat and mouse chase to arrest the former military ruler.

However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
there was no official word from the government yet confirming the decision.

Sources told DawnNews that the meeting at the Presidency was attended by caretaker interior and law ministers who briefed President Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
... husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in ...
about the situation arising out of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) decision to cancel the bail of Musharraf in Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
murder case.

Police waited all day from higher authorities whether to arrest the former general as the IHC had also taken notice of Musharraf's escape from the premises of the court after the cancellation of bail.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Esquimeau village our hero was receiving a quick lesson in aeronautics......
Musharraf hold up at his farmhouse residence under tight security made it impossible for the police to arrest him. A large number of local and international media remained outside the residence following the high drama.

All the roads leading to Musharraf's residence were blocked by law enforcement agencies.

Earlier in the day, he was whisked away from the IHC premises with the help of his private security guards moments after his bail plea was denied by the court.

His return to his residence was also cleared to ensure that police can not arrest him on his way back.

FBI seeks public's help in finding two suspects in Boston Marathon bombings
[BOSTON] Hoping the public will provide crucial clues, the FBI today released video and photos of two men who are suspected in Monday's deadly Boston Marathon terror bombings.

"Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers, or family members," said Richard DesLauriers, special agent in charge of the Boston FBI office. "Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us."

He said the two men -- shown strolling down a sidewalk behind marathon spectators and mingling in the crowd -- are considered "extremely armed and dangerous."

DesLauriers described the two men as Suspect No. 1 and Suspect No. 2. Suspect No. 1 was wearing a dark hat. Suspect No. 2 was wearing a white hat.

DesLauriers said Suspect No. 2 was observed planting a bomb, leaving it in place shortly before it went off.

"Within minutes," he said at a news conference at a Boston hotel.

Asked if he knew where the suspects went, he said Suspect No. 2 had gone west on Boylston Street after planting the bomb. It wasn't known where the other suspect went, he said.

Minister details the killing of Somaliland intelligence chief
AYNABO, Somalia – The breakaway region of Somaliland’s Interior Minister Mohamed Nur Araale stated that 16 people were arrested for the jailbreak that killed a Somaliland intelligence chief, Garowe Online reports.

Minister Araale stated at a press conference in Hargeisa that Somaliland authorities have arrested 16 men who have been charged with conspiring to free two men who had been jailed in Aynabo jail station for a grazing land dispute issue.

“In the city of Aynabo at the local jail station a group of armed men stormed the jail station forcefully freeing two men from their clan. Luckily there were armed forces who were operating in the area and heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene, successfully arresting 16 armed men who participated in the jailbreak,” said Minister Araale’s on Tuesday’s meeting.

Saraar region Intelligence Chief Ahmed Aydid was killed in the jailbreak also two correction officers were injured.

Minister Araale stated that the cause of the arrest of the two was because of a grazing land dispute. He stated that the jailbreak did not have any relation to a recent land dispute over oil exploration in the area.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
65-0 Baseball game cut off after three innings.
Words like "travesty" don't usually apply to a high school baseball game. They do when the final score of that game is 65-0.

As first noted by the Newark Advocate, a newspaper in Ohio, and followed upon by Sporting News columnist Bill Bender, the Licking County (Oh.) Licking Heights High baseball team routed Columbus (Oh.) Harvest Prep High by a final score of 65-0. The game was halted after three innings, by which point Licking Heights already had accumulated 48 hits, 13 walks and a troubling 11 hit batsmen.

The Hornets scored 16 runs in the first inning, 18 runs in the second and 31 in the third. Harvest Prep scored no runs at all.

"It's the most awkward I've ever felt in 34 years of coaching," Licking Heights coach Jeff Boyer told the Sporting News. "I didn't know what to feel. I wasn't happy. I felt bad for their kids and didn't know what to tell our kids."

Before anyone blame the state of Ohio for not having a mercy rule to halt such a game, it's worth noting that it does. However, that rule calls for games to end abruptly if one team holds a 10-run lead after five innings and does not have provisions for games that get far out of hand earlier. In the case of Licking Heights and Harvest Prep, the game was called after three innings because of encroaching darkness, not the astounding 65-0 score.

While there is no defending a 65-0 final score, it appears that Boyer tried -- or offered to try -- just about every alternative at his disposal to minimize the damage. At one point Boyer claims he went to the game's home plate umpire and offered to have his players bunt and then step on the plate to guarantee an out.

The umpire's response to that possibility? Boyer made that clear, and hinted at its irony.
"... he said he didn't want it to be a travesty of a game. And I'm thinking, 'We're already there.' "

While the two teams will meet again on April 22, Boyer has made it clear that Licking Heights is committed to avoiding the kind of embarrassment that resulted from the teams' first encounter. That's all for the best for both teams, regardless of how responsible Licking Heights could possibly be for the eye-popping lopsided final score.

#3  What, did the prep school chess club double as their baseball team? I could see something like that happening at a badly-coached little league game, but high school? Was this "Prep High" a special-needs school? Hmm, apparently not, although this suggests some sort of trouble at the school. Over-compensating for an embarrassing recruiting scandal a few years back?

#5  If the victorious coach was really worried about the score he should have told his team to hit the ball towards infielders. Practice aiming their hits and give them the best chance of making a play. The bunt step in the plate gambit is judt humiliating the other team.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria Troops Seize Strategic Homs Village with Hizbullah Support
[An Nahar] Syrian troops captured a strategic village in central Homs province on Wednesday with the help of Hizbullah, putting pressure on rebel forces in the area, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog said.

The army seized Abel, on the main route between the city of Homs and Qusayr, a rebel stronghold near the border with Leb, the Observatory said.

The village is also just four kilometers (2.5 miles) from the main route that runs between Homs, Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
and the northern province of Aleppo.

"This will hamper the movement of rebels between Qusayr and the city of Homs," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
rebels in the area captured the abandoned Dabaa military airport, seizing munitions left behind by the retreating regime forces, the group said.

"This airport should have allowed the rebels to ease the pressure on them in the area, but with the capture of Abel by the army, it has become more complicated," Abdel Rahman said.

In recent days, troops have concentrated their efforts on Qusayr and the surrounding villages, with the Observatory saying soldiers have been aided by fighters loyal to Hizbullah.

Homs province as a whole is considered a strategic prize because of its location, connecting Damascus to the coast.

Violence continued elsewhere in Syria on Thursday, killing at least 22 people, according to the Observatory, which relies on a network of activists and doctors inside the country.

On Wednesday, 139 people were killed, the Observatory said -- 60 rebels, 43 civilians, including six children and 36 regime troops.

Former terror suspect slain in southern Thailand
A former terrorist militant suspect who survived three ambushes was gunned down at his home and another villager was critically wounded by a bomb in Pattani's Yaring district on Thursday.

Police say Yusoh Mateeyoh was killed in his vegetable garden this morning. Yusoh was formerly a wanted terrorist militant suspect. He turned himself in to authorities to demonstrate his innocence and his name was later taken off the wanted list. He survived three earlier ambushes, and told his wife he did not expect to survive the next one and she should prepare to receive his body for burial.

Also in Yaring district, another civilian was seriously injured by a bomb blast near a security checkpoint on Thursday afternoon. The explosion occurred about 1 p.m. and the victim was taken to the hospital. No other details were available.

United Arab Emirates arrests 'al-Qaeda terror suspects'
[BBC.CO.UK] Seven members of an alleged al-Qaeda cell have been tossed in the slammer
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
over plans to attack targets in the United Arab Emirates, officials tell state media.

The group was planning actions which compromised the Gulf nation's security, according to state news agency WAM.

An unidentified source told the agency the cell recruited people, promoted al-Qaeda and provided finances and logistical support to the organization.

All seven members are believed to be Arab nationals.

Last December, the UAE arrested members of what it called a terror cell which it said was planning to attack targets in the Emirates and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...

Another 94 people, said to be members of an Islamist organization, are on trial in the UAE charged with plotting to overthrow the government.

The detainees, all Emiratis, include prominent human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
lawyers as well as judges, teachers and student leaders.

An Emirati human rights activist who asked not to be named told the BBC that "it was highly unlikely" al-Qaeda was operating in the UAE.

"I don't put any credibility in what state security says. These kinds of arrests are a pretext for repression."

The UAE is a major oil exporter and key Western ally in the region, comprising seven sheikhdoms run by ruling families.

Up to 80% of its residents are expatriates, lured by work in construction or the lucrative financial sector.

Man dies while planting IED in Mogadishu
MOGADISHU -- Early Thursday morning a man died after reportedly trying to plant an improvised explosive device (IED) in main intersection in Mogadishu, Garowe Online reports.
"Beelzebub! Send out the lesser virgin devils with another spiked iron stool and a trident. You'll have to find a space in the third row back, fourth row down, next to the lava fountain, but at least he'll only be crowded on five sides."
Authorities said that after dawn prayers a man's body was found in the middle of Turabunka and KM4 intersection in Mogadishu's Hodan district. The busy intersection was empty as authorities say he died when the IED he was planting detonated.

Hours later, authorities stated that they had arrested 7 co-conspirators and that the case was still pending.

The intersection is one of Mogadishu's busiest streets, frequented by students who attend schools in the area.

According to local sources, the impact of the blast could be heard throughout Mogadishu which according to witnesses severed the man's body.

China-Japan-Koreas
N Korea lays out tough pre-conditions for talks
North Korea offered talks Thursday with South Korea and the United States, but laid out pre-conditions that Seoul dismissed as ‘absurd’ and analysts said would do little to reduce soaring tensions. The demands laid out by the North’s main military body included the withdrawal of UN sanctions and a permanent end to South Korea-US joint military drills.

The North’s conditions were swiftly rejected by South Korea which, together with the United States, has made any talks conditional on the North putting its nuclear weapons programme on the table.

‘North Korea’s demands are totally incomprehensible. It’s absurd,’ foreign ministry spokesman Cho Tai-Young told reporters.

South Korea’s new president, Park Geun-Hye, has made tentative — and conditional — offers of talks, but the North’s initial response was to swat them away as a ‘crafty trick’.

Some analysts see the North’s engagement in a debate over dialogue — no matter how unrealistic the conditions — as a welcome shift from the apocalyptic threats that have been pouring out of Pyongyang. But others like Daniel Pinkston, a North Korea expert with the International Crisis Group, ruled out any softening of Pyongyang’s position and said those hoping for dialogue were being wilfully naive.
It's almost like Danny boy is upset that the missiles aren't already flying...
The North, Pinkston argued, had bound itself to a course that could only end with its recognition as a nuclear power — a status that is anathema to the United States and its allies.

‘So what is there to even talk about?’ Pinkston said. ‘The North is committed. It’s burned its bridges. Any reversal could only be made at immense domestic cost to the regime.

‘And there is simply no way any US administration is going to sit down and confirm a change in the status quo with the North as a nuclear state,’ Pinkston said. ‘We’re still firmly on a collision course, and it’s not going to end well.'

The first step demanded by the North’s National Military Commission was the withdrawal of ‘cooked up’ UN sanctions that were imposed after the nuclear test in February. North Korea has repeatedly cited the sanctions as a prime trigger for the current crisis.
Good. They're working. Tighten them up...

Commander: Iranian Army Able to Destroy Israel 'Alone'
That certainly is one perspective.
[An Nahar] Iran's army "alone" is able to destroy Israel, army commander General Ataollah Salehi said on Thursday, responding to boasts by the Jewish state that its military that could attack its archfoe on its own.

"Our message to this illegitimate regime (Israel) is the same, we do not need to utilize all of Iran's military forces," Salehi said on the sidelines of the Islamic republic's annual Army Day. "The army ... alone is able to destroy Israel."

His comments come after Israeli chief of staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz on Tuesday said the Jewish state's military was capable of attacking Iran on its own without foreign support.

Asked in an interview on public radio if the military could wage attacks on Iran "alone" -- without the support of countries such as the United States -- Gantz replied: "Yes, absolutely."

Israel believes the Islamic republic, which has issued many bellicose statements about the Jewish state, is working to achieve a military nuclear capability and has not ruled out a military strike to prevent this happening.

Iran denies it is developing an atomic bomb and says it needs its nuclear program of uranium enrichment for peaceful medical and energy purposes.

Israel is widely believed to be the Middle East's sole nuclear-armed state, albeit undeclared.

#1  As said times before, 9-11 + GWOT = WAR FOR OWG-NWO = as much an Inter-Muslim struggle for dominance as between the US + Radical Islam + other. Shia Rising Iran desires to replace the Sunni Saudis as "Keeper of Islam's Holy Places" + Sword-Defender of the Faith, etc, + that the future OWG Islamic Caliphate = Global Islamic Super-State/Superpower be Shia-centric iff not outright Shia-controlled.

Technically speaking, iff Iran can indeed unilater destroy Israel, such an event would be immeasurable in promoting Shia Iran + Shia Islam as the [post-Saudi]future + centre of the Faith.

Thusly, IRAN = NORTH KOREA = "NEEDS NUCLEAR WEAPONS" TO EXISTENTIALLY SURVIVE + PROPAGATE, DESPITE ANY PCORRECT RHETORIC TO THE CONTRARY.

* FYI DEFENCE.PK/FORUMS > IRAN DEFENCE OFFICIAL: US WARSHIPS PUSHED BACK BY IRAN'S BALLISTIC MISSLE POWER.

Lest we fergit, Iran's strategy is to contain or isolate any US or US-led Coalition invasion force outside of the Persian Gulf AFAP ASAP AMAP ALAP, where the same can be attacked by LR TacAir or Nuke-armed BMS, Subs, etc. while preventing or minimizing the effects of any Mushroon Clouds to Iran proper. Perv will be arrested come what may, says gummint
ISLAMABAD: Rejecting speculations of outbreak of anarchy in the country, caretaker Federal Minister for Information Arif Nizami on Thursday said that the court orders to arrest former president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf would be followed, come what may.

“Musharraf’s arrest will not plunge Pakistan into anarchy. Such apprehensions will prove to be false alarms, as they hold no water,” said Nizami during a media talk. He said the orders of the Islamabad High Court would be implemented in letter and spirit.

Philippine military overruns Abu Sayyaf camp
Overlooked story from earlier this week.
The Philippines military overran an Abu Sayyaf camp in a three-hour firefight, killing at least eight terrorists bandits.

Col. Carlito Galvez said Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon received a "slight wound" on the head during Monday's incident in Tipo-Tipo and is facing kidnapping and murder charges. Galvez denied claims by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front that they were the target of the early morning attack.

He said, "No, the MILF was not the target. It's just that the location of the Abu Sayyaf's lair was only 300 meters from the MILF position. The target really was the bandits' lair. Perhaps, the bandits believed the MILF will help them if attacked but during the firefight the MILF did not help them. Our soldiers were able to overrun the ASG camp in an hour."

Thirteen booked for obstructing polio campaign
[Dawn] Thirteen people were booked by the police on the charges of hurling threats and obstructing the polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
vaccination team members in Naseerabad on Thursday, police said.

Two of the accused, identified as Syed Saboor-ul-Hassan and Ahmed Jamal Sher in the FIR, were locked away

by the police while a search operation to apprehend the rest has been launched.

Police said the incident happened when a polio team, led by Rameez Raja, was administrating the vaccine to children in Siham (Naseerabad) on Thursday. The team members comprised of two females and one male rang the door bell and requested the
inmates to get their children vaccinated.

"There was an exchange of hot words between the team and the residents of the area over a petty issue," the station house officer Raja Akhtar said.

He said two of the accused identified by the complainant had been arrested while police raids were underway to arrest the remaining.

A similar incident had happened in the R.A. Bazaar on Tuesday when a three member polio team was tortured by people who refused to administer the vaccination to their children. However,

the issue had been settled later on.--

Coffee shop bombing in W. Baghdad kills at least 25
A bomb blast at a coffee shop and a billiard hall in west Baghdad late Thursday killed at least 25 people and wounded 50 others people, the state-run National Iraqi News Agency reported.

The agency, quoting police sources, said a suicide bomber blew himself up in the coffee shop in the mostly Muslim-Sunni Amriyah neighborhood, dpa reported. Three children were among the dead, the agency said. It added that heavy damage was inflicted in the area where the blast took place.

BNP activists asked to ‘destroy’ AL cadres
Leaders of BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance on Thursday asked its leaders and activists across the country to resist the “armed cadres” of the ruling party like they did in Fatikchari of Chittagong killing three people.

“Attack and destroy the Awami League-Chhatra League cadres who try to resist our hartals like in Fatikchari,” Sadeque Hossain Khoka, convenor of Dhaka city unit of BNP, said while addressing a protest rally at the capital’s Nayapaltan.
Cheez, they sound almost as bloodthirsty as MS-NBC...
Three people were killed and about 120 others, including cops, injured in the clash involving the activists of AL and Jamaat-Shibir-Hefajat and villagers at Kazirhat in Fatikchhari upazila on April 11. Over 100 motorcycles, four mini trucks, three private cars, a vehicle of Fire Service and a microbus were also torched during the clash

The opposition alliance held the rally protesting the government’s failure in finding out “missing” opposition leaders, including M Ilias Ali. Ilias Ali, a BNP organising secretary, was disappeared in April last year.

Musharraf will surrender on SC orders, says APML
[Dawn] The All Pakistain Moslem League (APML) has said its chief retired Gen Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
will accept whatever decision the Supreme Court takes on Friday about his arrest.

Speaking at a presser after the Islamabad High Court rejected the former military ruler's plea for bail before arrest on Thursday, APML secretary general Dr Mohammad Amjad denied that Gen Musharraf had fled from the court and said he had been taken to his farmhouse in Chak Shahzad only to protect him from agitated lawyers on the court's premises.

"The Supreme Court is our last hope and we believe that it will provide justice to Gen Musharraf and, if not, he will surrender himself," he said.

The escape of the former president from the court has raised many questions about the role of the caretaker set-up and its failure to arrest him soon after the rejection of his bail plea by Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the IHC.

"After the court's decision no police came to take Gen Musharraf into custody and some agitated lawyers tried to attack him.
Therefore, he was taken to his farmhouse," Mr Amjad said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria Rebel Coalition Says Assad 'Isolated from Reality'
[An Nahar] The key Syrian National Coalition rebel grouping on Thursday slammed Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
, saying an interview he gave a day earlier showed the embattled leader's "isolation from reality."

The opposition Coalition said Assad's interview with Syrian state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
"revealed his isolation from reality and blindness to the corruption and devastation and bloodshed that he has wreaked."

Assad's "approach is like that of tyrants before him," it said, pointing to "his claims of control and denial of the other and the absence of reality and proposal of solutions that bear no relation to the crises."

On Wednesday Al-Ikhbariya news channel broadcast an interview with Assad in which he warned that the West would pay a heavy price for what he called its support of al-Qaeda.

"The West has paid heavily for funding al-Qaeda in its early stages in Afghanistan. Today it is doing the same in Syria, Libya and other places, and will pay a heavy price in the heart of Europe and the United States," Assad said.

Assad did not spell out how he believed the West was supporting al-Qaeda in Syria. The United States and EU countries have been loathe to fulfill rebel requests for arms for fear they might fall into the hands of jihad boys.

He also warned that a defeat of his government would spell the demise of Syria.

"There is no option but victory. Otherwise it will be the end of Syria, and I don't think that the Syrian people will accept such an option," he said.

"The truth is there is a war and I repeat: no to surrender, no to submission."

And he criticized the opposition, which has much of its leadership living in exile outside Syria.

"How can you be patriotic if you've fled?" he said.

In response, the Coalition insisted it was "a representative body for all Syrians, emerging from their revolution and their sacrifices and their will."

"It derives its existence and legitimacy solely from this revolution," it said.

Europe
Failure of Kosovo talks undermines Serbia's EU hopes
Serbia and Kosovo have failed to agree on a plan to pursue the ethnic partition of Serbia's former province on Thursday, casting doubt on Belgrade's prospects of getting approval to start talks on joining the European Union in June.

After 14 hours of talks in Brussels between the Serbian and Kosovo prime ministers, called a make-or-break session, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said differences remained between the two sides.

She said however that she held out hope there could yet be an agreement before an EU ministerial meeting on Monday at which she is expected to make a recommendation on whether Serbia is ready to start negotiations on joining the EU.

Agreement between Serbia and Kosovo is seen as crucial to Belgrade's chances of securing approval at a June summit to begin talks on joining the 27-nation bloc.

Serbia does not recognize Kosovo's secession and has retained de facto control over a small, Serb-populated pocket in north Kosovo, an ethnic partition that frequently breaks into violence and that the EU says must end.

Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said he had accepted proposals for normalizing relations with Serbia that Ashton had put forward but that Serbia had rejected them.

Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said the Ashton's plan was much more acceptable to Belgrade than earlier proposals had been. He said, "It is clear however that Pristina is not ready to go to the very end and that it is obstructing these talks ... and even threatens to resolve the issue of northern Kosovo with some other methods."

The impasse over north Kosovo has frustrated NATO's plans to further cut back its peace force in Kosovo, which now numbers 6,000 soldiers.

In a major change in official policy, Serbia's ruling coalition has offered to recognize Pristina's authority over the north, but wants autonomy for some 50,000 Serbs living there.

The EU has brokered talks between Kosovo and Serbia for the past six months, but they have run into trouble over the powers Serbs would wield, particularly over policing and courts. Serbia also wants a guarantee that Kosovo's future army will not be allowed to enter the north.

China-Japan-Koreas
Cannibalism in N Korea's third largest city disclosed
A North Korean man living in Australia claims that human flesh is served up to eat in the country's third largest city. Sung Min Jeong claims that in Chongjin -- a city on the tip of the North Korean coast -- a shopkeeper serves up human meat.

Jeong's interpreter said, "One of his strongest thoughts is ... if he didn't take steps to leave North Korea, he would've become a North Korean who ate human flesh."

That thought is what drove Jeong to leave his homeland and to escape to Sydney in March 2011.

It is not the first time reports of cannibalism have emerged from the secretive state. Fears that North Koreans are being forced to eat human flesh increased earlier this year following claims a man was executed for murdering his two children for food.

A source said, "While his wife was away on business he killed his eldest daughter and, because his son saw what he had done, he killed his son as well. When the wife came home, he offered her food, saying: 'We have meat.' But his wife, suspicious, notified the Ministry of Public Security, which led to the discovery of part of their children's bodies under the eaves."

Fears of cannibalism surfaced in 2003 too, amid testimony from refugees who claimed poor harvests and sanctions had resulted in children being killed and corpses cut up for food. According to reports, requests by the UN World Food Program to access "farmers' markets" where human meat was believed to be traded, were turned down by Pyongyang, citing "security reasons".

Those caught selling human meat face execution, but one source told the North Korean Refugees Assistance Fund, "Pieces of 'special' meat are displayed on straw mats for sale. People know where they come from, but they don't talk about it."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran increases oil export despite sanctions
Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi says the country has significantly developed its capacity to ship oil overseas despite illegal US-led sanctions.
So he says...
Speaking to Press TV on Thursday, the Iranian oil minister said, "I can tell you today that today we have to keep ability to transport the oil shipments more than the capacity we had even prior to the sanctions."

"We have no problem in this regard. And we have other customers and, in fact, it's not possible to ignore us in the global market. If Europeans do not purchase our oil, we have also imposed sanctions on them. We have other customers today and more than 60 countries today, in fact, are purchasing our petrochemical and oil products and derivatives," he added. "So we have our presence. We have maintained our presence in the market."

Qasemi noted that despite the US-led sanctions on Tehran, the country overhauled its oil industry by developing its shipping industry and expanding its oil market.

The official said that Iran has increased the national revenues from the sale of non-oil products and managed to cut its dependence on oil revenues in its national budget.
The West's economic restrictions have failed to undermine the Iranian energy sector because domestic contractors overtook Western energy giants like Royal Dutch Shell and Total, he said.

The oil minister added that Iran is also set to boost its natural gas revenues by expanding the South Pars gas field and exporting to regional countries and those in Europe.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea Sets Conditions for Return to Talks
[NY Times] By North Korean standards, the invective issued over the past week has bordered on civil. Instead of near daily threats of nuclear annihilation for the "nest of evil" in the United States and promises to "press the button," the North in recent days has grumbled over a "crafty ploy" and "cunning trick" by America and its allies to strip the North of its nuclear arsenal.

The United States and South Korea, meanwhile, have made a change of their own: putting a new focus on offering talks after weeks of meeting North Korean provocations with harsh warnings that included deploying nuclear-capable stealth bombers on a practice run over South Korea.

Security analysts in South Korea and the United States expressed cautious optimism this week that the shift in tone, however understated, is a sign that after weeks of escalating threats that raised fears of armed conflict, both sides might be ready to calm tensions.

"I wouldn't say the crisis has passed, but maybe we're in a less dangerous phase," said Evans J. R. Revere, a former State Department expert on Asia who is now senior director of the Albright Stonebridge Group, a consulting firm that specializes in Korea, China and Japan. "The possibility of a serious miscalculation is not as great as a few days ago."

He attributed North Korea's reduced bombast partly to what he called their position "at the top of the rhetorical escalatory ladder -- where do you go after you threaten to nuke Los Angeles, Austin, Texas and Washington? The place to go after that is to carry out your threats, and they are not in the position to do that."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Secretary of State John Kerry urges against new Iran sanctions
[LATIMES] Secretary of State John F. Kerry implored Congress on Thursday not to impose tough new sanctions on Iran, warning that such a move could disrupt diplomacy over Tehran's disputed nuclear program at a delicate moment.

Appearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Kerry said that because Iran is two months away from an election, new U.S. economic penalties could become an inflamed political issue and reduce the chances of a deal to curb the nuclear program.

"There's an enormous amount of jockeying going on, with the obvious normal tension between hard-liners and people who want to make an agreement," he told committee Chairman Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.). "We don't need to spin this up at this point in time.... You need to leave us the window to try to work the diplomatic channel."

#1  The Iranians are MASTERS at stall tactics.

Yes John, they are just getting ready to agree to your terms. But they need more time. NOT!

#2  Make a secret trip to Teheran and plead for cooperation against global warming, Jawn. Just like you did with the Chinese.

I know you can do it. Now Git!

#3  Well, Kerry does have a point. Sanctions haven’t slowed the Iranian centrifuges. The only results so far have been a convenient foil for Tehran to foment anti-West sentiment and to provide fuel for a prolific Black Market. But the real objective, of course, is sanctions allow Obama to pretend he’s actually doing something.

#4  Yeah. Big sanctions, like the League of Nations did with Italy after they invaded Abyssinia in the 1930s. That worked like a charm.

#6  Naw, we don't need new sanctions. How about a blockade?

Afghanistan
Taliban in Qatar see no early peace talks with US
DOHA/KABUL: Taliban leaders living in Qatar have held no Afghanistan peace talks with US officials in the Gulf state for more than a year and see no prospect of any soon, Taliban sources say.

A team of envoys from the insurgent group flew to Qatar in early 2012 to open talks with the US government, which has laid a greater emphasis on negotiations before a handover of security to Afghan forces in 2014.

Among the most prominent members of the delegation in Doha is Tayeb Agha, the former chief of staff to the Taliban’s reclusive leader Mullah Mohammed Blinky Omar. But more than a year later, the negotiations held in March 2012 have not been followed by further meetings, Taliban sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Many of the Taliban leaders living in Qatar now appear to spend their time pursuing private family activities. Many can be seen at the shopping malls of the gas-rich Gulf Arab state with the little women, pushing trolleys loaded with merchandise and with their children in tow.
Domestic life in Qatar has to beat being a guerrilla in the hills outside of Kandahar...
“There has been no contact from the US with us at all this year,” said a Taliban source on the condition of anonymity. No date had been set to restart the talks, he said, declining to give any further details.
Doesn't sound like the leadership wants any talks, either, as long as Qatar keeps filling the shopping carts...
Talks among the United States, Pakistan and the Taliban about a possible Afghan settlement have made scant progress in the past few years. The Taliban suspended the talks in March 2012, saying Washington was giving mixed signals on the nascent Afghan reconciliation process.

“Taliban had asked for the exchange of prisoners and recognition as a group, but as far as I know there have been no more talks,” said Mohammed Himat, counsellor at the Afghan Embassy in Doha, told Reuters.

Police foils terrorist plan to blow up Mardan Press Club
[Dawn] Mardan police averted a sabotage bid on Thursday night as they defused about 15 kilograms bomb thrown by snuffies near the Mardan Press Club.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Khalid Naseem quoting eye witnesses said that two cut-throats riding a cycle of violence threw an iron pipe near the press club building and the bomb disposal squad was called in, who after a search revealed that it was pipe bomb.

He said the bomb might have been aimed at targeting the press club building or the nearby hotel on Shamsi Road.

"Police have cordoned off the roads and searching for the accused, who according to reports had fled towards Guli Bagh area," he remarked.

To a query, Khalid Naseem said that the bomb might have been placed to target the Press Club as there was no such other important target there. Office of Awami National Party (ANP) is also away from the spot from where the bomb was recovered, he added.
