BREAKING: Shooting at San Diego-area synagogue causes injuries, man detained: police
[Al-Rooters] 48 hr rule. Unlikely neighborhood for a terror attack - Poway, but who knows
Abu Uluque submitted the following at 16:10:
Not many details yet.
Sheriff’s deputies warned of a man with a gun at Chabad of Poway about noon Saturday

APRIL 27, 2019 12:35 PM

POWAY ‐ As many as four people have reportedly been shot at the Chabad of Poway on Saturday. A suspect was taken into custody.

Sheriff’s deputies first warned about a man with a gun in the area of the Jewish synagogue on Chabad Way about noon.

"Please stay clear of the area and allow deputies to safely do their job. Thank you for your patience and cooperation," the sheriff’s tweet said.

Authorities have taped off the area around Chabad and a command post has been set up at Chaparral Elementary School just north of the congregation.

It was unclear where in the synagogue the shooting occurred.

Jewish prayers are held at 10 a.m. each Saturday, then a children’s program at 11 a.m., according to the synagogue’s website. A sit-down Kiddush and Farbrengen ‐ traditional Jewish gatherings ‐ were to follow.

Several neighbors reported hearing the gunshots, and some were evacuated from nearby homes to the school temporarily as a precaution.

San Diego police were keeping watch on other local synagogues as a precaution.

No further information was immediately available.

The Daily Mail has photos, though not yet of the shooter, and reports that members of the congregation tried to overpower the shooter.

California killer accused of beheading, torturing cellmate
[FoxNews] One convicted killer has been accused of beheading another in what authorities call an exceptionally sadistic torture slaying at a California prison.

Corcoran State Prison inmate Jaime Osuna removed several body parts from his cellmate, Luis Romero, Assistant Kings County District Attorney Phil Esbenshade said Friday. Charges accuse Osuna, 31, of repeatedly cutting Romero last month using what the prosecutor called a sharp metal object wrapped in string and attached to a handle.

It's not clear how much happened while Romero, 44, was still alive or whether anyone heard the overnight assault, but "we do believe that the victim was conscious during at least a portion of the time," Esbenshade said in an email. "This is the most gruesome case that I have seen in terms of heinousness in the slaying."

Hiring Illegals via a Staffing Company
[Dallas News] Nearly a month after immigration officials rounded up hundreds of employees at an Allen technology company, it's unclear whether the business will face repercussions for using an unauthorized workforce.

The employees arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for working illegally at CVE Technology Group, which refurbishes cellphones and other electronics, remain in limbo. 283 workers were taken into custody. Most were later released. Legal delays and immigration court backlogs will leave many waiting months or years for a resolution.
Waiting years to be sent back? Is this a great country, or what?
But experts say large loopholes in federal immigration law often allow employers to avoid prosecution. The practice of using staffing companies as a barrier from responsibility helps keep companies from "knowingly" hiring unauthorized workers while still benefiting from their labor.
What about the 'staffing company'? Can they be prosecuted?
Staffing companies are often so "thinly capitalized" that they often fold when held accountable for bad actions, making it hard for workers to get restitution for labor violations.
The workers? You mean the illegal aliens, taking American jobs?
Still, a cottage industry of these small firms has made a profitable market out of temporary ‐ and sometimes unauthorized ‐ workers.
Sometimes. Maybe some are being legally exploited?
CVE Technology shifted blame to its staffing companies, saying those arrested "were employed by unrelated third parties, not CVE. We work with multiple temporary and staffing agencies, all of whom are independently owned and operated, and each of whom contractually accepts full responsibility to ensure compliance with all applicable law."

"These companies need to go about it properly. They need to be using a legal workforce. It’s required by law," [ICE Special Agent in Charge] Berger said at a news conference. "It potentially exploits the illegal workers. ... They’re afraid to complain oftentimes because they’ll lose their job. They become victimized by their employers. I can’t say that’s happening in this case ‐ I’m just talking in general. The situation is ripe for exploitation of an illegal workforce."
Not as big fan of exploitation. On the other hand, had they stayed at home, they wouldn't be exploited, and having American lawyers seeking restitution for said exploitation.
Often, it's up to individual states to regulate the staffing companies. In Texas, for example, "professional employer organizations" must file with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and they can face fines for bad actions.

In California, Padin said, lawmakers have worked to close the loophole. A 2014 law there holds staffing companies and larger employers equally liable for labor violations. Although those protections don't extend to immigration law, it's a good start, Padin said.
Tell the Socialists we need more government regulation!
"Laws like this one are really important because they incentivize host clients to scrutinize contractors," she said. "That basically makes sure that hiring companies are jointly responsible."
But no need to go after the illegal agents who arrange for these workers to be exploited, and sell them fake papers to facilitate their exploitation. Thanks, main stream media!

China-Japan-Koreas
Former State Department Official Spied for China Since 2007
[Wash Free Beacon] China's Ministry of State Security successfully obtained State Department internal documents from an embassy office manager who was paid in cash and gifts, according to court documents in the case of Candace Claiborne, a spy for China since 2007.

Claiborne, 62, a former State Department office manager posted to both Beijing and Shanghai, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a single conspiracy charge of defrauding the government by lying to federal agents about extensive contacts with two MSS intelligence officers.

"Candace Marie Claiborne traded her integrity and non-public information of the United States government in exchange for cash and other gifts from foreign agents she knew worked for the Chinese intelligence service," said Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers. "She withheld information and lied repeatedly about these contacts."

The government did not charge Claiborne with espionage and she had claimed in interviews with the FBI that she only passed unclassified State Department information to the MSS.

New details of the spy case were outlined in a statement of facts submitted to federal court in the case as part of her plea bargain.

Claiborne had access to top-secret information and was recruited by the MSS in 2007 and continued to have contacts with one of two MSS handlers until at least 2016.

The case highlighted a decades-long failure on the part of the FBI to aggressively counter Chinese intelligence activities targeting Americans. At the time of her arrest in March 2017, Claiborne was the first American prosecuted for Chinese spying in nearly 10 years.

Since then, federal authorities have charged three other former intelligence officials with espionage-related offenses.

China accuses France of illegally sailing warship in Taiwan Strait
[FT] China has accused La Belle France of "illegally entering Chinese waters" after a French naval vessel sailed through the Taiwan Strait earlier this month, in an escalation of its rhetoric that highlights rising tensions over the status of the island nation that Beijing claims as its territory.

Senior Colonel Ren Guoqiang, China defence ministry front man, said on Thursday that Beijing had made stern representationsto Gay Paree over the passage of the French warship and said the Chinese navy had sent ships to warn the French ship to leave the waterway, according to news hounds present at the presser.

China sees Taiwan as its territory and has threatened annexation if Taipei refuses indefinitely to give up its de facto independence.

The French defence ministry made no immediate comment on Thursday. But defence officials told the Financial Times that the French navy had been transiting the Taiwan Strait at least once a year without any problem or reaction from the Chinese side.

"La Belle France reaffirms its commitment to freedom of navigation in accordance with the law of the sea," said one.

men will be welcomed into the minority faith, a community leader said Thursday, allowing women taken as slaves by the Death Eater group to return to Iraq from Syria.

Eido Baba Sheikh, son of the Yazidi spiritual leader Baba Sheikh, said the children of the formerly enslaved women will be treated as members of the faith, resolving one of the most difficult questions facing the community since the Islamic State group's 2014 campaign to try to exterminate the minority. Thousands of women and girls were forced into sexual slavery when the gunnies attacked Yazidi communities in northwestern Iraq.

But the community shunned the women returning from captivity with children, a reflection of the deeply held Yazidi traditions to view outsiders with suspicion as a response to centuries of persecution.

205th Corps adventures in Zabul: 53 Talib hostages rescued, Talib big turban toes up, 3 Talibs self-boom

Afghan forces rescue 53 hostages from a Taliban prison in Zabul province

[KhaamaPress] The Afghan security forces have rescued 53 hostages from a Taliban prison in southern Zabul province, the Ministry of Interior officials said.

Nasrat Rahimi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior said the operation was conducted by Special Forces in Daichupan area of the province.

According to Rahimi, at least 8 militants were also killed during the same operation.

Rahimi further added that 4 Commandos of the Afghan army and 4 police soldiers were also among those rescued during the operation.

Taliban Commander killed in an operation of the Afghan-coalition forces in Zabul

[KhaamaPress] The Afghan military in the south has confirmed that a Taliban commander identified Abdur Rahman was killed during an operation of the Afghan and coalition forces in southern Zabul province.

The 205th Corps spokesman has confirmed that a Taliban Commander operating out of Shah Joy District of Zabul Province has been killed yesterday. Abdur Rahman was known to have operated in the areas of Shah Joy and Qalat as a weapons and IED facilitator. He was assumed to be responsible for attacks as recent as this month.

The operation to eliminate the Taliban commander was a joint effort by the 205th Corps and the coalition forces and was ultimately killed by a precision airstrike with no civilians in the area.

The 205th Corps have increased their security operations in Zabul as a way to eliminate future violence and attacks by the Taliban.

“We call on the Taliban to reduce the violence and work towards peace,” was the message sent to the Taliban by the 205th Corps as an effort to appeal to them to stop offensive operations.

3 Taliban blow themselves up in Zabul Province

[KhaamaPress] The 205th Corps confirmed Taliban operating in the Safa District of Zabul Province were attempting to move roadside bombs which accidentally detonated and blew up three Taliban and wounded an additional three.

The 205th Corps also stated that their engineering team in Zabul found and destroyed 12 mines in the Safa district which were intended to be used against security forces as they traveled through the area.

The use of roadside bombs is a common practice used by the Taliban against Afghan forces but unfortunately residents in the area are usually those who fall victim to these tactics.

Egypt heightens security ahead of Coptic Easter
[AlAhram] The Egyptian authorities have stepped up security measures around churches and state institutions ahead of Coptic Easter, which falls this weekend.

The interior ministry said in a statement on Friday that it has intensified the security presence in main roads and vital areas around the country, and that checkpoints will be deployed around churches and major buildings, which will also be cordoned off by police to "maintain public order" and immediately deal with any attempt to disrupt the celebrations.

Security patrols will be sent out and rapid deployment and intervention forces will be deployed to secure major areas, the ministry added. Female police personnel will be involved in the inspections.

Authorities are also increasing security measures and inspection points at Cairo's underground metro and at railway stations during the holiday period.

Easter in the Coptic Orthodox Church falls on Sunday; it was celebrated in the Roman Catholic church and many Protestant churches on 21 April.

Egyptians also celebrate the non-religious springtime holiday of Sham El-Nassim on the Monday after Coptic Easter.

Coptic Easter Sunday and Sham El-Nassim are both public holidays in Egypt.

Egypt's Christian minority make up around 10 percent of the country's 98 million population. The majority of Egyptian Christians are members of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

Europe
Salvini Demands Security Services Increase Observation of Islamic Cultural Centres
[BREITBART] Populist Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has outlined proposals for the security services to do more to observe and root out extremism in the country’s Islamic cultural centres.

Salvini made his case for increased security measures during a presser this week at the Interior Ministry, highlighting the recent Sri Lanka terror attack that killed some 250 people over the Easter weekend, saying that Italians needed more clarification on the hard boy elements within the Islamic community, Il Giornale reports.

The populist League party leader also singled out an incident that occurred in Rome this week in which a Moslem migrant had stabbed a homeless Georgian man on a bus after noticing his crucifix necklace. "Rome does not deserve certain scenes," Salvini said in reference to the incident and added that it did need more security.

"According to the data of the updated census of Islamic presences in Italia to date there are 1,382 Islamic cultural associations, of which 1,068 are also used as a place for prayer," Salvini said and added, "Obviously it is full of good people but there are also realities underlined by the police to identify the presence of fanatics and hard boys."

One of the proposed measures will see police and security services take more time to find out what is being preached inside mosques and cultural centres in order to have better control over forms of extremism and avoid radical hate preaching.

The populist Italian coalition government has already been particularly effective at combatting terrorist plots and has led Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
in the number of deportations of migrant jihadists.

Trump Says He Will Declassify FBI’s Russia Probe Documents, ‘And Much More’
Ooooooooooohhhhhhhhh...
[DAILYCALLER] President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
committed Thursday to declassifying a slew of records related to the Russia probe "and much more."

Trump said in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity that he was "glad" he waited to declassify the documents until after the end of the special counsel’s investigation.

"I thought that maybe they would obstruct if I did it early, and I think I was right," Trump said.

Trump has for months considered releasing portions of a classified surveillance warrant application granted in June 2017 against Carter Page, the former Trump campaign adviser. He has also considered declassifying FBI notes of interviews with Bruce Ohr, the Justice Department official who served as dossier author Remington Christopher Steele’s handler for months after the 2016 election.

Trump ordered all of the documents declassified on Sept. 17, 2018, but reversed course four days later. Trump said at the time that he decided not to declassify the documents after meeting with the Justice Department.

"Everything’s going to be declassified and more, much more than what you just mentioned," Trump told Hannity in his first on-camera interview since the release of the special counsel’s Russia report.

Florida’s Crackdown on Sanctuary Cities Begins
[FRONTPAGEMAG] Florida appears poised to join a righteous law-and-order backlash against so-called sanctuary cities that shield and harbor illegal aliens in defiance of the nation’s immigration laws, after a pro-immigration enforcement bill passed the state’s House of Representatives.

The Sunshine State was home to 775,000 illegal aliens in 2016, according to Pew Research Center.

The state is also home to 15 municipalities that are sanctuary cities, according to Floridians for Immigration Enforcement, which prefers to label those jurisdictions “anarchy cities.”

“Not only do they disobey the law, but I question their loyalty to this country,” David Caulkett, the group’s vice president, said last month.

A bill that cracks down on sanctuary jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities easily passed the GOP-controlled Florida House and now has a good chance at being approved by the Republican-dominated Florida Senate.

Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, urged lawmakers to approve legislation taking aim at the state’s outposts of immigration lawlessness.

“I’m asking the Legislature to send me a bill during this legislative session to address sanctuary cities and counties in Florida,” DeSantis tweeted February 26. “I’m also calling on more local law enforcement to work with the federal government to ensure our immigration laws are enforced and justice is upheld.”

The House in Tallahassee approved HB 527, the proposed “Rule of Law Adherence Act,” on a vote of 69 to 47 on April 24. Its sponsors are Republican Reps. Cord Byrd and Erin Grall.

Rawalpindi police make arrests after minor boy sexually assaulted by schoolmates
[DAWN] Rawalpindi police on Thursday registered an FIR against three individuals for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old male student studying in Grade 8 of a private school.

The victim is a Pak-American dual national who came to Pakistain to study one and a half years ago.
They raped an American?! What on earth were they thinking??
Two of the suspects have been incarcerated
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
while a search is underway for the third suspect, who is on the run, police confirmed.

The primary suspect is a senior student studying in Grade 12 at the same school who, along with two of his friends, sexually assaulted the 15-year-old after taking him for ice cream.

A case has been registered against the suspects under Sections 292, 34, 367A and 377 of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC).

Section 292 A of the PPC deals with exposing children to seduction. Section 377 deals with unnatural offences and Section 367 deals with kidnapping with the intent to subject a person to grave harm, while Section 34 deals with common intention.

According to an FIR registered by the victim on April 25, he had gone shopping to Saddar on April 19 when he ran into a schoolfellow who was with his friends.

He said that the three perpetrators lured him to an ice cream shop, after which they forcibly took him to a parking lot in a car and tried to assault him. The victim said that when he attempted to make noise, they tied his mouth shut with a cloth in order to silence him.

The 15-year-old said that the suspects then took him to a 'dera' in a deserted area and opened the lock to the 'dera' with keys that were in their possession.

The victim recounted that the three individuals took turns assaulting him. He said that while one would assault him, the other would hold a pistol and the third would make a video. He added that the videos were then forwarded ahead to other people.

Panel recommends action against people involved in polio scare
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: A committee of senior health officials formed by government to investigate the polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
scare on Monday last has recommended legal proceedings against the union council members, owners of private schools and individuals involved in the propaganda against the vaccine.

The committee also suggested adopting a comprehensive strategy to woo the parents to vaccinate their children to eradicate the vaccine-preventable childhood ailment.

It said that use of loudspeakers in mosques should be regulated and standard operating procedures for prayer leaders should be put in place to prevent propaganda against the anti-polio vaccine.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
U.S. Aims Lethal Blow at Tehran’s Finances by Prohibiting Oil Exports
[FDD.ORG] Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced yesterday that the U.S. would stop granting the waivers that have allowed select importers to continue purchasing Iranian oil after the return of U.S. sanctions last November. By targeting an indispensable source of income for the holy manal regime, the Trump administration took a major step toward implementing its policy of maximum pressure.

When the U.S. reinstated sanctions on Iran, it granted waivers to eight countries, allowing them to import slightly more than 1 million barrels of oil per day for a period of six months. The waivers are officially known as Significant Reduction Exceptions, or SREs. Despite the U.S. allowance of 1 million barrels per day, actual Iranian exports reached 1.7 million barrels per day in March, a difference worth tens of millions of dollars per day to Tehran.

Reducing Iran’s exports to zero, or even to less than 500,000 barrels per day, might strike a lethal blow to the regime’s finances. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s budget proposal for 2019 assumes exports of 1.5 million barrels per day at most and an average price of $54 per barrel; the resulting income would cover about $20 billion of the $47 billion Rouhani plans to spend.

While stopping the waivers is a logical extension of the president’s policy of maximum pressure on Iran, Pompeo’s announcement confounded the expectations of oil market analysts who assessed that Trump would shy away from any move that risked a major increase in gasoline prices for American consumers. With Venezuela’s exports down sharply and new unrest threatening Libyan and Algerian oil production, the potential cost of slashing Iranian exports has risen. The price of oil has already risen 40 percent in 2019, although it began the year just above $50 per barrel, at the low end of its range for the past five years.

Turkish jets hit alleged PKK position in Duhok province: reports
[Rudaw] Ottoman Turkish jets struck alleged targets of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Duhok province on Friday morning, the armed forces announced.

The Arclight airstrikes targeted weapons positions and shelters of the PKK guerrillas in the Kurdistan Region mountains in the Gara, Zab, and Avashin areas, Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces tweeted.

Media close to the PKK reported a civilian vehicle in the Matin area had been hit by the Ottoman Turkish army, roughly 45 kilometres northeast of Duhok city. Roj News did not immediately have information of casualties.

A local man told Rudaw English that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
carried out airstrikes for nearly an hour, targeting positions in the mountains near Gelye Baski village, in the Doski area 32 kilometres northeast of Duhok city.

There were more than eight airstrikes between 10:30 and 11:20 Friday morning, he said. He had not heard of any civilian casualties.

"This is the first time that airstrikes hit this area and the PKK are here," he said.

Turkey regularly carries out airstrikes and military offensives against alleged PKK positions in the Kurdistan Region, where the group has its headquarters. In January, six non-combatants were killed in two separate incidents, sparking protests in the town of Shiladze, Duhok province. Angry protesters stormed a Ottoman Turkish military base near the town.

The airstrikes and military activities in the mountains have also driven hundreds of villagers out of their homes and destroyed acres of forests.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has repeatedly called on the PKK to leave the Kurdistan Region. "We have to address the root cause of these strikes and it’s the PKK presence. If they aren’t there, there will be no excuse for airstrikes," Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani said in January after the Shiladze protests, adding he is in contact with Ankara to "make sure this does not happen again."

ISIS has plans to retake Palmyra from Syrian Army
Planning is easy. Execution requires enemy agreement.
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) terrorist group is allegedly planning an offensive to retake the ancient city of Palmyra in the eastern countryside of the Homs Governorate.

A source from the Syrian Army in eastern Homs said they have discovered an Islamic State plot to not only retake land in central Syria, but also recapture the key city of Palmyra in the process.

The source said the Islamic State knows capturing Palmyra would be a great benefit to them because the Syrian and Russian air forces can only carry out limited Arclight airstrikes in the area because of the historical relics that present in the city.

Furthermore, Palmyra is isolated along the strategic Homs-Deir Ezzor Highway, which means the terrorist group can carry out more ambushes against the Syrian Army.

The Islamic State has already captured Palmyra on two separate occasions; both times, the Syrian military had to send their special forces to help retake the city from the terrorist group.

With their successful attack on al-Kawm last week, the Islamic State has proven that they are capable of carrying out surprise offensives and capturing territory that is supposed to well-guarded by the Syrian Arab Army and their allies.

Europe
Germans increasingly hostile towards asylum-seekers
[DW] More than half of Germans view asylum-seekers in a negative light, a new study shows. Prejudice against the newcomers has grown even as fewer migrants come to Germany.

Right-wing populist attitudes have become "normal" in Germany's mainstream, said authors of a new study presented by the left-wing Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Berlin on Thursday.
To the right of the left wing? That could place them anywhere from slightly less left to centrist to actually far right — whatever that last means nowadays.
"The center is losing its footing and its democratic orientation," researchers said.
Sez Lefties, anyway.
The foundation has released reports on right-wing extremism since 2002. The latest study, conducted by a group of researchers from Bielefeld University, shows that a record 54.1% of the respondents across Germany now hold a negative view of asylum-seekers.
How very odd, given the angelic behaviour of the invaders as recorded in our admittedly spotty archives.
The numbers are higher now than they were ahead of the refugee crisis in 2014, when 44% of Germans expressed concerns about the group. In 2016, after the peak of the migration wave, the survey showed 49.5% of people were negative about asylum-seekers.

According to the study presented on Thursday, these attitudes are more common in former East Germany, now home to less than a quarter of the country's population, where 63% were found to harbor such attitudes, while 51% did so in western Germany. The survey also shows that the level of prejudice has grown even as fewer people applied for asylum in Germany.
A cute little table at the link shows 890,000 applied for asylum in 2015, 280,000 in 2016, and 186,644 in 2017. There is no table showing how many turned out to be registered in a variety of places under a variety of names, nor how many have disappeared from the rolls and the knowledge of Man.

Turkey indicts third U.S. Consulate worker in Istanbul on terrorism charges
[Ynet] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has indicted a third U.S. Consulate employee and his wife and daughter on charges of membership of a terrorist group, according to a copy of the indictment seen by Rooters, a move likely to further strain ties between Ankara and Washington.

Nazmi Mete Canturk, a security officer at the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul, and his wife and daughter are accused in the indictment of links to the network of Fethullah Gülen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
, the U.S.-based Moslem holy man blamed by Ankara for a failed 2016 coup.

A Ottoman Turkish prosecutor is seeking jail sentences for all three on charges of membership of an armed terrorist organization, according to the indictment, which was completed on March 8 but has not been made public.

It says Canturk was in contact with dozens of individuals under investigation for being members of Gulen's network and that "evidence has been obtained regarding the suspect's actions in line with the instructions of the (terrorist) organization".

Canturk, his wife and daughter are cited in the indictment as denying the charges.

Pentagon set to send 300 more troops to Mexico border, some in contact with migrants
[AlAhram] The Pentagon said on Friday that it expected to send about 300 additional troops to the border with Mexico including roughly 100 cooks who would hand out meals, breaking with past policy to avoid troops coming in contact with migrants colonists.

The move is the latest sign of a growing U.S. military support role for President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's politically charged immigration policies.

Earlier this month, Trump said he would have to mobilize more of the military at the U.S. border with Mexico after listening to stories about migrants colonists crossing the border from people attending a Republican fundraiser.

The Pentagon has previously said there were no plans for U.S. forces to interact with migrants colonists as they support border agents dealing with illegal immigration.

In addition to the cooks, the Pentagon is expected to send 160 drivers and 20 lawyers, Pentagon front man Charlie Summers said.

"We will have some of our troops handing out meals, therefore would come in contact with migrants colonists," Summers said. He said it was an "amendment to the current policy."

There are currently about 5,000 active-duty and National Guard troops near the border, though that number fluctuates.

[NYPOST] A top University of Southern Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, official who was fired for allegedly taking bribes in the college admissions scandal is now working as a Lyft driver ‐ and selling her $2 million mansion, according to a new report.

Donna Heinel lost her job as USC’s senior associate athletic director last month when she was busted for allegedly taking more than $1.3 million in payoffs to help at least 24 rich kids get into the college as bogus athletic recruits ‐ including the daughters of "Full House" star Lori Loughlin.

Now she’s ferrying around passengers as a driver for ride-sharing company Lyft ‐ and recently put her home in Long Beach on the market for $1.998 million, CBS LA reports.

She bought the four-bedroom, three-story, Mediterranean-style property in 2012 for $1.2 million, according to the LA Times.

Assyrians in Sweden consider forming police force after receiving death threats
[ALMASDARNEWS] Assyrians in Sweden are facing threats of violence from a number of people, the Syriac National Federation told the Swedish newspaper Samhällsnytt this week.

On Monday, the Syriac National Federation published a Facebook post in which they reveal a number of threats they have received from Arabic-speaking people.

According to the post, the Syriac National Federation has contacted the police in Sweden about these threats; however, nothing has been done to ensure their security.

Several members of the group commented on the post and called on the SNF to create a police force to deal with these threats.

One user said, "We must get our own police!"

The SNF said they have received threats on several occasions, with little to no action taken by the police.

"It’s a little different. They can, for example, accuse us of going to Western countries’ in the Middle East and being traitors. At one point they said they will do the same with us in Sweden as they did in the Middle East," the SNF said.

When asked what these threats mean, the SNF said it "is the genocide that has been carried out in the Middle East against Christians. We have moved these groupings to Sweden, but they have caught up with us here."

"We expect some fucking civil war between different groups if someone does not put down his foot. The people who did terrible acts in the Middle East, they are here now ... and no one seems to care," they continued.

According to previous information for Social News, there is a widespread feeling of resignation among Syrians in Sweden that concerns the rule of law’s ability to protect them and prosecute crimes.

Haftar-led Libyan Army captures key area en route to Tripoli
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Libyan National Army (LNA) scores an imperative advance this evening after a fierce battle with the rival Government of National Accord (GNA) forces.

Backed by heavy Arclight airstrikes, the forces loyal to Benghazi-based Field Marshal General Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
managed to crack the GNA’s lines in the al-Aziziyeh area, forcing the latter to retreat north towards Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
The withdrawal of the GNA forces from al-Aziziyeh ends the week-long battle for the area and puts the LNA in position to make a big push to reach the southern outskirts of Tripoli city.

Earlier this week, the LNA announced the second phase of their Tripoli offensive, which is also expected to be the last part of their capital city campaign.

Should the GNA lose Tripoli, they will be forced to withdraw to the coastal city of Misrata, which has long been a stronghold for their forces.

to halt the battle of Tripoli; however, with the LNA inching closer to the city each day, it is very unlikely that forces loyal to General Haftar will end their campaign.

Lastly, with support from Russia, La Belle France, Egypt, and the UAE, the LNA has the diplomatic sources to counter the nation’s opposing their offensive.

Kim's armoured train departed the Far Eastern port city of Vladivostok a day after talks that saw Putin back the North's need for "security guarantees" in its standoff with the US.

The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim told Putin the US had adopted a "unilateral attitude in bad faith" at a summit with President Donald Trump

"Peace and security on the Korean peninsula will entirely depend on the US future attitude, and the DPRK will gird itself for every possible situation," Kim was quoted as saying.

The Kim-Trump summit broke down in late February without a deal, after cash-strapped Pyongyang demanded immediate relief from sanctions but the two sides disagreed over what the North was prepared to give up in return.

Some 8,000 Paleostinians were protesting along the Gazoo Strip border on Friday, with some rioting and throwing rocks and fire bombs at IDF soldiers who responded with tear gas and occasional live fire.

According to the Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,-run Gazoo health ministry 31 people were maimed. The IDF had no immediate comment.

The protests were held at various locations along the border under the banner of Hamas’s ongoing "March of Return" demonstrations that have been held almost every Friday for more than a year.

The exchange also came amid ongoing efforts to implement a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

recently brokered ceasefire understandings between Israel and Hamas, which Hebrew media reports have said include an end to violence emanating from the Gazoo in exchange for the Jewish state easing some of its restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of the coastal enclave.
A subsequent article in the Jerusalem Post adds:

Ghani Inaugurates Afghanistan’s Parliament
[ToloNews] President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
inaugurated the 17th legislative term of the Afghan parliament ‐ the Wolesi Jirga ‐ on Friday at a time that the final results of five provinces, including Kabul, have not been announced so far.

Based on the law, the parliament should have been inaugurated last year in March, but it was delayed due to "controversies" around the October parliamentary elections.

Addressing the ceremony, Ghani said that the majority of the new members of the parliament are from the young generation who will protect women's rights, human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
and other rights of Afghans.

He added that the government did not have any role in the delay in parliament inauguration.

Ghani said a deadline should be set for the announcement of final results of Kabul in the parliamentary elections.

The current challenges in Afghanistan are due to the imposed war in the country which has been fueled by "direct foreign support" of the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
, Ghani said.

Ghani said the so-called al-Fatha offensive by the Taliban has been a "failed" attempt.

He added that Afghanistan is no longer dependent on one country in terms of trade and transit and that the Afghan government is in favor of connectivity.

Ghani said he remains as President of Afghanistan until the upcoming presidential elections -- scheduled for September 28.

He mentioned that the key to peace lies is in unity among Afghans, in women’s participation and in the courage of the Afghan forces and that the Republic system will continue.

More than 7,000 Syrians quit camp near Jordan border: UN
How many more have wandered home, all unnoticed?
[AlAhram] More than 7,000 people have left a desperate desert camp for displaced Syrians near the Jordanian border since March, a United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
spokesperson said Friday.

According to the UN's humanitarian coordination office OCHA, around 36,000 people remained in the isolated Rukban camp near al-Tanf base used by the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, after over 4,000 left between March and April 21.

The Syrian government and key backer Russia said in February they had opened corridors out of the camp, calling on residents to leave.

"Since March, over 7,300 people have left Rukban," OCHA front man David Swanson told AFP, including some 3,000 who left after April 21.

Those who have quit the camp have moved to collective shelters in the central city of Homs or resettled in their areas of origin in the province of the same name, OCHA said Thursday.

It said Rukban residents were organising their own transportation to the edge of a de-escalation zone established around al-Tanf, from where they either continued in their vehicles or were transferred by private or government-provided vehicles to four collective shelters in Homs city.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says those returning to government-held parts of Homs from Rukban had struck so-called "reconciliation deals" with the Syrian government. Conditions inside Rukban are dire, with many surviving on just one simple meal a day, often bread and olive oil or yoghurt, according to one resident.

The camp has been particularly difficult to reach due to its location on the Jordanian border and the proximity of US forces and the rebels they support. In February, a humanitarian convoy of 133 trucks delivered food, clothes, healthcare items and medical supplies to the camp's residents. The February 6 delivery was just the second in three months.

CBO Report: 1.4 Million Lost Health Insurance Since 2016 ‐ And Obamacare Is To Blame
[IssuesNInsisghts] The number of uninsured climbed by 1.4 million from 2016 to 2018, according to a report out last week from the Congressional Budget Office. Naturally, this led those on the left to blame the Trump administration for its Obamacare "sabotage."

But the data in that report-which was released on the same day the Mueller report came out and largely ignored -tells an entirely different story.

All of the increase in the uninsured over the past two years ‐ all of it - is the result of the massive rate increases Obamacare's mandates and regulations caused. According to the Health and Human Services Dept., premiums in the individual insurance market doubled from 2013 to 2017. They shot up again in 2018.

For those eligible for Obamacare subsidies, the rate increases were meaningless. The amount they had to pay didn't change much, and in many cases went down.

But for the millions of middle-class Americans who buy insurance coverage on the individual market and aren't eligible for Obamacare subsidies, the result has been financially devastating.

The CBO report shows the impact, plain as day.

From 2016 to 2018, the number of people getting subsidized coverage through an Obamacare exchange increased by 100,000. The number enrolled through Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion climbed by 700,000.

And, thanks to the booming job market under President Trump, the number of people getting coverage through work climbed by 2.2 million over those two years.

But the number of people in the unsubsidized individual insurance market? From 2015 to 2018, it plunged from 9.7 million down to 6.2 million ‐ a 36% decrease.

Before Obamacare went into effect, there were more than 10 million people buying insurance on their own, without any government subsidies, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Yet, incredibly, when Sarah Kliff at Vox.com (the self-proclaimed "explanatory news" site) looked at the same report, she tried to blame the Trump administration for the increase in the uninsured.

"America’s uninsured rate is rising under President Trump, whose administration has passed new rules that make it more difficult to enroll in coverage," she begins.

Kliff goes on to say that "much of that increase (in the uninsured) is concentrated in the Medicaid program, where the Trump administration has approved new rules like work requirements that can make it more difficult for low-income Americans to enroll in the program."

That is completely false. Those work requirements Kliff points to apply only to those enrolled through the Obamacare-expanded Medicaid program. And only a handful of states have even tried to implement them. What’s more, enrollment in the Obamacare-expanded part of Medicaid is up by 700,000 since 2016. That’s a 6% increase.

As the CBO data make clear, enrollment in the regular Medicaid program declined by 1.1 million over those years. But this had nothing to do with any work requirements, and was more likely because these people didn’t need to be on the dole anymore.

So, in short, while Obamacare succeeded in making millions of people dependent on the government for health insurance, it’s done so at the expense of middle-class families who were specifically promised relief from high insurance costs.

In this light, the Trump administration’s attempt to make truly affordable options available to these middle-class families ‐ through short-term plans and association health plans ‐ looks more like humanitarian relief effort than an attempt to "sabotage" Obamacare.

PLO Terrorist Who Became US Citizen Faces Deportation
[Jpost] Vallmoe Shqaire obtained US citizenship in 2008 but never told authorities he was convicted by Israel of trying to blow up a bus.

Paleostinian terrorist Vallmoe Shqaire was sentenced on Friday by a Los Angeles court to nine months in federal prison to be followed by deportation to Jordan, after it was discovered that he lied about his past in order to obtain US citizenship, according to a report from CNN.

The case was reminiscent of that of Rasmea Odeh, who succeeded in obtaining US citizenship even though she had been imprisoned by Israel for her role in two terror bombings, one of which killed two people.

The judge in Shqaire's case questioned how he was able to even enter the United States. Shqaire first came to the US in 1999, and federal authorities did not become aware of his terrorist background until after 2010. This means that authorities were unaware that a terrorist was living in the US for over 10 years, and that it took nearly a decade after his past was discovered before he was finally locked away
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
Assistant US Attorney Annamartine Salick, the prosecutor for the case, said that information-sharing between countries was not as efficient at the time, which probably hindered the vetting process.

According to Salick, it took two years of work with Israeli officials to find records of Shqaire.
They probably had to check all the possible permutations of his name in English, Hebrew, and Arabic...
Documents from the court file of Shqaire, a Jordanian-born Paleostinian, indicate that he was trained by the Paleostinian Liberation Organization in the use of rifles and grenades, as well as in bomb-making.

Shqaire and an accomplice tried to blow up an Israeli bus in 1988, according to the court records, though while they managed to detonate a bomb within range of a bus, the attack did not cause any injuries.
How embarrassing! And then to be jailed, lose his American citizenship, and be sent back to the country he left so many decades ago for something he failed to accomplish? Utterly mortifying.
He was later caught by Israeli forces and given a ten-year prison sentence in 1991, but released after four years following agreements as part of the Oslo peace accords.

Shqaire would go on to assert that his confessions were coerced by the IDF as he was beaten during interrogations, and was subjected to alternately freezing or extremely hot showers and made to live in a small cell where it was impossible for him to stand up or stretch out his legs. US prosecutors wrote that his allegations were not supported by Israeli records.
*snicker* Tried the usual shtick, failed in the usual way.
Shqaire managed to enter the US on a visitor's visa in 1999, and proceeded to get married to a US citizen in order to obtain a green card.
“True love struck me like a thunderbolt, yer Honour.”
They divorced in 2002, but he remarried the same year, after which he was able to become a permanent resident.
“Truer love strikes even harder, yer Majesty. Check it out — I got a black eye and a goose egg. I’m gonna need two steaks for this one.”
He never mentioned his previous arrest or any involvement with terrorist groups to immigration authorities.

In 2008, he recieved full US citizenship.

Over the following decade, federal authorities investigated Shqaire for suspicious money transfers to Ramallah in the West Bank. While he was never charged in connection with these transfers, he was eventually convicted in a different context of credit card fraud, was placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
for four months and placed on five years' probation.
During the Obama years, none of those things were considered to be criminal crimes, donchaknow. At least not if one belonged to the right demographic.
However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
investigations continued into his past, and he was charged in October 2018 for unlawful procurement of US citizenship.
President Trump takes a different approach to all that.
It seems that because he obtained citizenship the investigation into Shqaire was made more difficult, because he enjoyed Constitutional protections.
As it should be. But that only slowed the mills of Justice, which is also as it should be.

Trump renews claim that Mueller probe was attempted ‘coup’
[NYPOST] President Trump renewed his conspiratorial claim that his administration was subjected to a "coup" attempt because of the probes launched into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and his campaign’s ties to Kremlin-link individuals.

"They tried for a coup, it didn’t work out so well," Trump said Friday during a speech before the NRA convention in Indianapolis.

He called the FBI officials who launched the investigation that led to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe "bad apples." Mueller’s report cleared Trump of collusion but came to no conclusion on obstruction.

"We didn’t need a gun for that one, did I?," Trump joked to hooting gun enthusiasts.

"We’ve been looking at things that you would not have believed possible in our country, corruption at the highest level. A disgrace," he claimed. "Spying, surveillance, trying for an overthrow, and we caught them."

Science & Technology
The universe is expanding way faster than astronomers thought
[NYPOST] The universe is expanding far faster than we thought ‐ and scientists are struggling to keep up.
Interesting. The universe is apparently expanding faster than the speed of light.
That’s according to a shocking new study, published in The Astrophysical Journal, which says we may need to rewrite the history of the cosmos to get our heads around the baffling find.

Researchers used one of the world’s most powerful telescopes to track the movements of faraway galaxies.

They found the space galaxies are shifting away from each other faster than previous estimates.

Based on the universe’s trajectory seen shortly after the Big Bang, this means the cosmos is expanding about 9% quicker than we thought.

Measurements were taken with NASA’s Hubble telescope and back up previous readings taken by the space gadget.

Astronomers admit that new physics may be needed to fathom the finding, which doesn’t line up with how we understand the universe.

This could rewrite the history of the Universe, which is largely based on our current grasp of physics.

"This is not what we expected," said study lead author Adam Riess, a scientist at Johns Hopkins University.

"This mismatch has been growing and has now reached a point that is really impossible to dismiss as a fluke."

Scientists used Hubble to measure the light coming off of 70 stars in our neighboring galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud.

They used a new method to capture quick images of these stars.

Because of the way they brighten and dim at predictable rates, these stars, called Cepheid variables, can be used to measure distances in the universe.

Their results don’t match up with the expected expansion rate of the universe, which was calculated by the European Space Agency’s Planck satellite, based on conditions Planck observed 380,000 years after the Big Bang.

"This is not just two experiments disagreeing. We are measuring something fundamentally different," Riess explained.

"One is a measurement of how fast the universe is expanding today, as we see it. The other is a prediction based on the physics of the early universe and on measurements of how fast it ought to be expanding.

"If these values don’t agree, there becomes a very strong likelihood that we’re missing something in the cosmological model that connects the two eras."

Iraq
Kirkuk: 16 turbans toes up, gov’t to investigate 3 cops airstruck by Coalition fire

Iraq to investigate 1 officer killed, 2 wounded amid coalition air strikes

[Rudaw] Iraq's Joint Operations Command announced on Friday it will open "an investigation commission" after two Federal Police were wounded and one killed while the US-led international anti-ISIS coalition conducted activities around Kirkuk province.

Iraqi Interior Minister Aqeel Mahmoud al-Khazali confirmed in a Facebook post that the investigation will take place, following the casualties to the 11th Brigade of the Federal Police.

Joint Operations Command is responsible for coordinating with all state-sponsored armed forces in the country.

The coalition, as first reported by The Jerusalem Post, has announced that there were reports of the casualties.

"One Iraqi Federal Police member was reportedly killed and two were wounded by Coalition Forces supporting Iraqi Security Force counter-Daesh operations near al-Dib, Iraq," coalition spokesperson US Army Col. Scott Rawlinson confirmed to Rudaw English on Friday.

"The wounded are in stable condition and receiving medical care. The incident is under investigation," it added.

The mountainous Hamrin area is located about 160 kilometers north of Baghdad and 70 kilometers south of Kirkuk.

Islamic State (ISIS) remnants have remained active there. Earlier this month two brigades of Iraq's elite Counter-Terrorism Forces (ICTS) began intensive operations in the area.

Through the ISIS conflict, the US-trained ICTS have served as the spearhead of Iraqi offensives against the extremists. Other units like the Federal Police, Army, Rapid Response Units, and paramilitias have been used to hold liberated territory.

JPost cited social media accounts claiming the strikes took place on Wednesday at a Federal Police checkpoint which had been mistakenly targeted.

Al-Ahad TV in Iraq reported coalition helicopters were involved in the strikes.

The channel is close to Asaib Ahl al-Haq, a group that is commanded by Qais al-Khazali and fought as a paramilitary during the ISIS conflict. It is known to have links to Iran and hold anti-US sentiment.

Amnesty International reported as early as 2017 that "armed men" would simply wear Federal Police uniforms. UNHCR has documented testimony of the Federal Police working with "others in desert camouflage military uniforms."

Iraqi police say killed 16 Islamic State members after raids in Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi police said Friday their operations against Islamic State extremists’ havens in the province of Kirkuk, north of the country, left 16 militants dead.

The Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service said n a statement its operations designed to purge Wadi al-Shai region in Kirkuk, which launched Thursday morning, “left 16 Daesh (Islamic State) terrorists and destroyed 21 hideouts and 14 underground tunnels.

It said the region had been used by the militant group as a launching point for hostilities against civilians and security services.

Huge crowd floods Khartoum, demands military cede power
[DAWN] KHARTOUM: Tens of thousands of protesters converged from all directions on Sudan’s army headquarters Thursday after calls for a "million-strong" demonstration to demand the ruling military council cede power.
tens of thousands < million, mkay?
The day after three council members resigned following talks with protest organisers, demonstrators flocked towards the central Khartoum site on Thursday evening, beating drums and singing revolutionary songs, said a journalist at the scene.

"We want the military council out. We want a civilian government," said protester Adam Ahmed, a medical student.

The rally came after Sudan’s new military rulers and protest leaders agreed to set up a joint committee, to chart the way forward two weeks after the ouster of veteran president Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
The Alliance for Freedom and Change, an umbrella group leading the protests, had called for a million-strong march to "continue to protect our revolution and to ensure that all our demands are achieved".

Also at the protest were dozens of judges, dressed in their robes, who had marched from the constitutional court, a photographer said. "We are here to give a message that the judiciary should be independent without any political intervention," a judge told journalists.

Europe
Five Accused of Murdering Palestinian Boy (from Lebanon) in Belgian Asylum Centre
[AnNahar] Belgian authorities on Thursday charged five Paleostinian men with the murder of a nine-year-old Paleostinian boy at an asylum-seekers' centre near Belgium's northern port city of Antwerp.

Officials said the boy, who had been staying with his mother in the Broechem centre, went missing late on Monday before a search turned up his lifeless body in a ditch on Wednesday.

The Antwerp's prosecutor's office said the five had been charged with the boy's murder.

"The facts are qualified as hostage-taking and murder," the prosecutor's office in Antwerp said in a statement without confirming a news report the boy may have been kidnapped for ransom.

The accused are aged between 19 and 34, the prosecutor's office said, with front man Kristof Aerts confirming they were Paleostinian.

The boy's uncle, Bassem Chihadeh, told Phlegmish TV channel VTM he was found dead with "his hands and feet tied".

He suggested the child had been the victim of a kidnap for ransom attempt explaining that after he disappeared the family received a WhatsApp message demanding 100,000 euros ($111,000) .
Why would someone with access to such a large sum be living in an asylum center instead of somewhere safer?
The boy, born in Leb but of Paleostinian origin, had been staying with his 26-year-old mother in the Broechem asylum centre when he disappeared on Monday evening, Aerts said. He was last seen riding his bike.

A source close to the prosecution told AFP that statements that the accused have given Sherlocks "are not clear" and none of them has confessed.
Surely asylum ought only to be granted to those who are properly grateful and well-behaved. There are plenty of Belgians to handle the vicious criminality line — no need to bring in outsiders to do the work.
Belgium, a country of about 11 million inhabitants, receives about 20,000 asylum seekers annually, many of whom come from conflict areas in the Middle East, according to the Fedasil asylum seekers' reception agency website.

Sri Lanka
Day 7: Sri Lankan police hunt 140 people after Easter bombings, 15 turbans toes up after gunbattle in Eastern Province
Day 6 events can be seen here, here and here.
[MSN] Sri Lankan police are trying to track down 140 people believed linked to Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for the Easter Sunday suicide bombings of churches and hotels that killed 253 people, President Maithripala Sirisena said on Friday, adding some Sri Lankan youths had been involved with Islamic State since 2013.

Muslims in Sri Lanka were urged to pray at home and not after the State Intelligence Services warned of possible car bomb attacks, amid fears of retaliatory violence.

The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka also urged its citizens to avoid places of worship over the weekend after authorities reported there could be more attacks targeting religious centers.

The streets of Colombo were deserted on Friday evening, with many people leaving offices early amid tight security after the suicide bombing attacks on three churches and four hotels that also wounded about 500 people.

Nearly 10,000 soldiers were deployed across the Indian Ocean island state to carry out searches and provide security for religious centers, the military said on Friday.

The All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ullama, Sri Lanka's main Islamic religious body, urged Muslims to conduct prayers at home in case "there is a need to protect family and properties."

Police have detained at least 76 people, including foreigners from Syria and Egypt, in their investigations so far.

Authorities have so far focused their investigations on international links to two domestic Islamist groups - National Thawheed Jama'ut and Jammiyathul Millathu Ibrahim - they believe carried out the attacks.

Sirisena said top defense and police chiefs had not shared information with him about the impending attacks. Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando resigned over the failure to prevent the attacks.

"The police chief said he will resign now," Sirisena said.
The Times of Israel adds:
On Friday night, Sri Lanka’s military said its soldiers in the eastern part of the country engaged in a gunbattle with suspects believed to be linked to the attacks, and police announced a 24-hour curfew until further notice in the Moslem-dominated area where the shooting took place.

Continuing government confusion in its investigation ‐ from drastically lowering the corpse count to misidentifying a Brown University student as a krazed killer ‐ only added to the public’s worries.

Officials from the police to the prime minister say gunnies remain on the loose and have access to explosives. That has led to increased security at shrines, churches, temples and mosques across the multiethnic country of 21 million off the southern coast of India.

On Friday night, soldiers raiding a house in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province fought a gunbattle with suspected gunnies linked to the bombings, said military front man Brig. Sumith Atapattu. After a couple of hours, he said soldiers were "engaged in a clearing operation," adding that some casualties were possible.

In the same area, police front man Ruwan Gunasekara said officers acting on information from intelligence officials found 150 sticks of blasting gelatin and 100,000 small metal balls, as well as a van and clothing suspected to be used by those involved in the Easter attack. Suicide bomb vests often are packed with such balls to increase the shrapnel in the kaboom, making them even deadlier.

Earlier Friday, police confirmed the krazed killer group’s leader, Mohammed Zahran, died in the suicide kaboom at the Shangri-La Hotel, one of six hotels and churches attacked. Zahran appeared in an Islamic State video claiming responsibility for the coordinated assault, and authorities in both Sri Lanka and Australia confirmed links between IS and the attack.

Police said Sherlocks had determined that the assailants’ military training was provided by someone they called "Army Mohideen," and that weapons training had taken place overseas and at locations in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.

Police said they locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
the operator of a copper factory who had helped Mohideen make improvised bombs and purchase empty cartridges sold by the Sri Lankan military as scrap copper.

On Friday, police apologized to a Brown University student and a human rights

activist after they posted her picture to Twitter and erroneously identified her as a wanted krazed killer. The police then deleted their Twitter account.

Mission Accomplished - All Catholic Church services in Sri Lanka canceled
at what point does wise caution become capitulation?
[NY Post] All Catholic Sunday Masses in Sri Lanka have been suspended until further notice following this week's massacre ‐ where two of the bombings took place at Catholic churches, church leadership announced Friday.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, told reporters Friday that church officials got their hands on a leaked security document that named churches ‐ both Catholic and of other denominations ‐ as major targets for attackers, according to Vatican News.

He insisted that the faithful stay at home, for their own safety, according to the report.

"We don't want repetitions," Ranjith said.

Bodies of 15 found after gun battle on Sri Lanka's eastern coast

[Jpost] The bodies of 15 people, including six children, were discovered at the site of a fierce overnight shootout on the east coast of Sri Lanka, a military front man said on Saturday, six days after a rash of jacket wallah attacks that killed more than 250 people.

The shootout between troops and suspected Islamist gunnies erupted on Friday evening in Sainthamaruthu in Ampara, to the south of the town of Batticaloa, site of one of the Easter Sunday blasts at luxury hotels and churches.

The police and military had earlier said four button men and a civilian had been killed in the shootout. The 15 were found in the morning during clearance operations.

Islamic State Women Terrorizing Refugees in Syria Camps While Waiting to Come Home
[BREITBART] Many in the camps remain die-hard supporters of IS. Women in general were often active participants in IS’s rule. Some joined women’s branches of the "Hisba," the inquisitors religious police who brutally enforced the group’s laws. Others helped recruit more foreigners. Freed Yazidi women have spoken of cruelties inflicted by female members of the group.

Within the fences of al-Hol camp, IS supporters have tried to recreate the caliphate as much as possible. Some women have re-formed the Hisba to keep camp residents in line, according to officers from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces guarding the camp.

The news agency noted that women wearing the ISIS bride uniform ‐ all-covering black robes and veils known as niqab ‐ attempted to intimidate anyone who dared talk to journalists.

He is reportedly considering sending some to the nearly empty American military prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, known as Gitmo.
Oh yessssss, do that, please! Perhaps even take in guests from other countries, so long as their governments pay for their keep. Afghanistan
Why is Afghanistan's upcoming grand jirga significant?
[DAWN] Afghanistan on Monday will convene a rare "loya jirga" ‐ a massive meeting for delegates from across the country to discuss the war and United States efforts to forge a peace deal with the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
More than 2,000 people have been invited to gather amid tight security for four days of debate under a large tent in Kabul.

Here is a look at the history of loya jirgas, and what to expect from this one.

WHAT IS A LOYA JIRGA?
A loya jirga ‐ literally "grand assembly" in Pashto ‐ is traditionally comprised of Afghan elders.

Such gatherings have a centuries-old history in Afghan culture and are periodically convened to reach a consensus on major political issues.

The most recent jirga was held in 2013, when Afghan officials endorsed a security agreement that allowed US troops to stay in Afghanistan beyond their planned withdrawal in 2014.

In August 2007, the first joint Afghan-Pakistain jirga was held in Kabul after relations between the neighbours deteriorated amid Afghan accusations that Pakistain was harbouring Taliban and al-Qaeda gunnies.

In 2003, former president Sibghatullah Mojaddedi chaired a loya jirga that approved Afghanistan's new constitution for a post-Taliban era.

The events usually comprise political figures, religious scholars, teachers, activists and community leaders. Delegates typically break into smaller groups to tackle various matters.

WHAT IS ON THE AGENDA?
The upcoming loya jirga is being held at a time when the US and Talibs have held several rounds of talks. The two sides have discussed a possible troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in exchange for a ceasefire and various pledges from the Taliban.

But crucially, the talks have thus far cut out the government of President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
, whom the Taliban view as a US stooge.

Ghani's government is jostling for influence in the peace talks and the jirga aims to set out Kabul's red lines for any deal, including the continuation of the constitution and the protection of women's rights, the media, and free speech.

Ghani has invited the Taliban to participate, but the turbans, having waged an unrelenting guerrilla war since 2001, have predictably refused.

In the past, the Taliban have blasted rockets at the loya jirga tent, and much of Kabul is being locked down under a massive security operation for this year's event.

In a statement, the Taliban vowed that any decisions or resolutions made at a loya jirga are "never acceptable to the real and devout sons of this homeland".

India-Pakistan
Press freedom hero
[DAWN] IF evidence of the perils of being a journalist in Pakistain today were still needed, the IPI’s Press Freedom Hero Award for this year provides it ‐ resoundingly so.

Dawn’s Cyril Almeida has endured an over two-year long campaign both overt and insidious, conducted with the express objective of silencing him, even if it put his life at risk.

Since October 2016, when he reported on civil-military differences over tackling militancy in the country, Mr Almeida has been put on the ECL twice and subjected to relentless legal harassment through frivolous petitions, with charges of treason against him (the trial is ongoing).

Alongside that, there are threats of physical violence against him and relentless character liquidation on social media.

But for a Pak journalist to be given this prestigious award by an association of print, broadcast and digital media professionals in nearly 100 countries, also has wider implications.

Consider the nationalities of some past recipients, and the extent of the unravelling of democracy in Pakistain becomes clear. They include, among others, journalists from Egypt, Syria, Iran, Angola, Æthiopia, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
and Russia.

All of them have shown remarkable resilience and integrity in standing up to autocratic regimes, doggedly uncovering state corruption, reporting from theatres of war, etc. Sadly, Pakistain’s once vibrant, questioning media ‐ albeit not without its faults ‐ is largely in retreat, browbeaten into a supine conformity where self-preservation is predicated on self-censorship.

True journalism, the kind that holds power to account, has become a scarce commodity.

As noted by numerous press freedom reports, media persons have been kidnapped, beaten, placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
on flimsy pretexts, charged with terrorism and maligned as ’foreign agents’ to destroy their credibility and mislead the public. (An entirely unwarranted, and still pending, FIR against the journalist Shahzeb Jillani accuses him of cyberterrorism.)

And that is not even taking into account the various pressure tactics exerted on media outlets which target their sources of revenue.

Only through a united front can journalism in Pakistain shake off this stranglehold and regain its real purpose.

Rolled over is a bit harsh. I'd say they willingly enlisted. Same end result, I guess, but they seem to enjoy their work.

Raids signal ‘something bigger’ in Baltimore mayor probe: expert
[NYPOST] The raid by federal agents on the home of embattled Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh could signal she’s facing "something bigger" than the scandal over her shady dealings with a kids book series she authored, a lawyer who defended another Charm City pol said.

The Democrat was already under investigation by the state prosecutor’s office for securing a lucrative book sales deal with the University of Maryland Medical System. The no-contract arrangement for the "Healthy Holly" series netted Pugh more than $500,000 while she sat on the institution’s board, officials said.

The FBI and IRS
...the Internal Revenue Service; that office of the United States government that collects taxes and persecutes the regime's political enemies...
descended on seven locations associated with Pugh on Thursday morning, including her home, where they hauled out boxes of the books and documents, the Baltimore Sun reported.

"The books might just be a shiny object. My guess is there’s something bigger," said Arnold W. Weiner, a lawyer who defended a previous mayor, Sheila Dixon, against misconduct charges in office, the outlet reported.

The raid was the first indication that Pugh was being probed by the feds. Experts said the agencies are likely looking for potential tax violations, such as whether she reported her income from the book series.

"When money is involved, there is potential for tax crimes. And they’re easier to prove," David Jaros, a University of Baltimore Law School professor, told the Baltimore Sun.

Pugh, 69, has been on an indefinite leave of absence from office ‐ citing her health ‐ since the state probe was launched earlier this month.

#2  I'm not so sure about the 'something bigger' angle. The lawyer cited here didn't even hint at anything, and I don't see (right now, anyway) how much further up the political food chain you can go from a mayor to elsewhere. Very different. Roger Stone wasn't a public official with the ability to approve hundreds of millions of dollars in city contracts. She may spent the rest of her life in prison.

Byron York: When did Mueller know there was no collusion?
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] Trump-Russia special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed May 17, 2017. Twenty-two months later, on March 22, 2019, Mueller sent his report to the Justice Department.

Some special counsel investigations have taken longer; it is the nature of such probes to drag on and on. But why did Mueller need nearly two years to determine whether the Trump campaign and Russia conspired or coordinated to fix the 2016 election?

He didn't, it appears. In the wake of the release of Mueller's report, there are indications that special counsel prosecutors mostly knew by the end of 2017, and certainly by a few months later, that the evidence would not establish that conspiracy or coordination -- or collusion, to use the popular term -- had taken place. Mueller clearly spent a lot of time on the other half of his report -- trying to establish that Trump obstructed justice -- but on the most explosive and consequential allegation of the Trump-Russia affair, the conspiracy allegation, the Mueller investigation was essentially over long before it officially ended.

So he could put his thumbs on the scale of the 2018 election. I bet he knew within two months of starting this whole dog and pony show that it was bullshit.

#6  I think they threw crap up in the air until there was obviously pony.

I also agree that he knew very quickly there was no collusion.

Most of the two years was about James Comey and "obstruction"

I believe Mueller decided the leaks from his team were becoming too obvious and he shut it down.

Obviously believe it or not, based on Rosenstein's recent speech that he had lost the Assistant AG support.

Mohamed Noor, cop who killed bride-to-be, expresses regret over joining force
[NYPOST] The Minneapolis cop who shot and killed an Australian bride-to-be, took the stand at his own murder trial and tearfully confessed that he regrets becoming a police officer, according to reports.

"If I knew this would happen, I never would have become a cop," Mohammed Noor said while being questioned by his lawyer, Tom Plunkett, in Hennepin County District Court on Thursday.

The former officer testified that he thought Justine Damond ‐ a 40-year-old yoga teacher who called 911 to report a disturbance at her home ‐ was "a threat" when she approached his police vehicle in her pink pajamas in July 2017, local NBC affiliate KARE 11 reported.

Noor, 32, told jurors he fired his gun because he heard a loud bang on the driver’s door and thought his partner Matthew Harrity’s life was in danger.

When he realized she was not armed, he became frozen with grief, he testified.

"I felt like my whole world came crashing down. Great anguish. Couldn’t breathe. [I had] slight paralysis," Noor said ‐ and then began crying, according to Twincities.com.

He later told a lawyer for the prosecution, "I had to make a split-second decision."

Noor shot Damond in the stomach after he was called to her home around 11:30 p.m. July 15, 2017, to investigate a possible assault.

He has claimed he saw a man on a bike riding toward Damond’s house right before the shooting ‐ and that he acted in self-defense.
