Quick, to the Victim-Mobile!
h/t Instapundit
Has someone lit the Victim-signal in the sky? For the last several days my Facebook page has been lit up with women "me too-ing" about how they also were harassed and are as victimy, helpless, and deserving as any would-be Hollywood A-lister flung across Harvey Weinstein’s casting couch.

It’s all "I too was harassed" and "being a woman is so terrible" and "no one is safe" and "patriarchy."

It might be unkind of me, but my first thought ‐ right after, "Really, I didn’t know Bill Clinton’s staff was that big" ‐ was "No, you were not sexually harassed, because the penalties for that are straight-up horrendous unless you happen to be a big-time leftist. At worst you were inconvenienced by having a pass made at you by a guy you found unattractive."

This thought could be wrong and unkind. Young and hapless women often allow things to happen to them that are objectively sexual harassment.

...Is there a lot of that type of thing? Yeah, there probably is, particularly where young, stupid women work. And it’s probable a lot more goes on where immigrants work, particularly illegal immigrants, whose position is precarious.

But in general, that kind of harassment is only a real problem when it’s an industry dominated by very few gatekeepers. These industries/professions -- the arts, publishing, filmmaking, politics, etc. -- are almost all dominated by the left.

...Oh, and in those fields, particularly as more women rise to prominence, men get harassed too, in the exact same way.

So all these women donning the vestments of holy victim can climb off the sacrificial altar. This isn’t an #allwomen or #yesallmen. This is human.

The story of humanity proves that those with power often took their "payment" in sexual favors. From kings to ministers, history is littered with the excesses of powerful men and their bastards. But if you look up close, the women who rose to power did the same. Queens and Empresses, and even noblewomen, often treated young men of no fortune as toys.

It’s a human thing.

Now, this is not excusing it. It is also human to kill and eat your enemies, and I’ve been assured we don’t do that anymore, no matter how much people annoy you on the internet.

But that sort of bad behavior stops, not by piling on and saying "me too" or worshiping the victims for being so courageous as to admit they let themselves be victimized, but by doing something about it.

What can you do about it? Well, if you’re in one of those industries that are dominated by liberals behaving badly, and you don’t have the courage to give up your career for the sake of exposing the bad people (and honestly, you shouldn’t have to. No one should have to. But the world doesn’t run on "should"), you can build alternative paths to success. Build under, build over, build around so you don’t need to go through the corrupt gates.

And if you aren’t in one of those industries, you can learn to distinguish between real abuse and an unwanted come-on. Real abuse ("you put out or you don’t have a career") only happens where the guy (or gal) knows he can get away with it. Circumvent, refuse, expose.

As for unwanted propositions? Be real. You’re human. Unless you have three eyes and fifteen elbows, some of them on your teeth, someone is going to find you attractive. Depending on how the come-on is attempted, the appropriate response is a slap (yes, violence does solve something) or a kind "Thank you but no."

Yes, if you’re a woman it will be mostly men who will give you a sexual come-on. (Though some of us seemed to attract equal-opportunity interest, at least when young.) This doesn’t mean all women are victims and all men are predators.

It means you’re a woman and men are attracted to women, and not all of them are couth in their approaches.

"Me tooing" in comments, writing heartfelt sniveling stories of how you’re still traumatized, and hashtag activism will do absolutely nothing.

If women want to be in the workplace (as they more or less always were, other than a few exceptional periods), sex will rear its interesting head.

Man Spits on Homeless Guy for 'Making His Grandmother a Slave'
h/t Instapundit
A 27-year-old black man found himself arrested recently when he spit on a 52-year-old homeless guy whose only apparent crime was being white. Yes, it sounds like hyperbole, but it's not.

It also doesn't appear to be a hoax, either.

From The Daily Caller:

Maryland police charged a black man with a hate crime after he allegedly spat in the face of a disabled white man and shouted "all white people are evil."

Marquis Evans-Royster, 27, walked up to a 52-year-old homeless disabled white man while on a city bus, WJLA-TV reported Monday. Authorities maintained Evans-Royster told the man he owed him because of slavery.

"You owe me for making my grandmother a slave," Evans-Royster said to the man. According to police, he also turned to other passengers on the bus and yelled, "All white people are evil." He also allegedly told two of the bus’ white passengers they should be dead.

Clearly, the disabled homeless man was oozing his white privilege all over the place.

Frankly, Evans-Royster is not much of a historian. After all, it's highly unlikely he had a grandmother born prior to December 18, 1865, when the 13th Amendment went into effect.

Yet some will swear that Evans-Royster can't be racist, because supposedly racism = prejudice + power. So he lacks the power to be racist.

#2  The age of the young man says everything. These people are everywhere. Teens to mid thirty's. So dysfunctional. Husband dead due to overdose. Wife lives in motel room with newborn. Drugs of one kind or another. Young woman 21 is happy to see Psychiatrist early because person ahead of her OD'ed. Drug treatment center(they have a new name to be less offensive) overflowing and lined up at the door first thing in the morning. Solution is to build another center. In and out of prison (new name for that also). They go back and forth. You don't break free because you will be looked upon as being better than your brothers. I call this planned parenthood for adults.

#8  Black racism is becoming a serious problem, trouble is, people are afraid to call it that and tolerate crap from people who have no right to serve it. All the things they protest, incarceration rates, poor educational skills, high rates of criminal records, unemployment, poverty, illegitimacy at 70% and massive welfare use, all are blamed on white privilege and a corrupt, racist government, yet all can be attributed to the demise of the black family and the entire Great Society welfare scheme develop in the Johnson era. I won't quote what he said, but these are the fruits of it, just as he predicted about the political leanings. Victimhood is the excuse for plain out inferior effort and collective cultural suicide in the black community.

Attack Dog Bannon becomes threat for Senate GOP on taxes
[The Hill] Steve Bannon is becoming a problem for Republicans on tax reform.

President Trump’s former chief strategist is threatening to support right-wing opponents to every GOP senator up for reelection, aside from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

He argues that GOP senators are falling short in enacting the Trump agenda, blasting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his conference over the failure to repeal ObamaCare.

If the GOP follows up with another loss on tax reform, Republican senators know it will just give Bannon more ammunition to use against them.

"There’s one antidote to Steve Bannon: success," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told reporters on Tuesday.

A win on tax reform could quiet Bannon, Graham suggested.

Senators reach deal to fund Obamacare subsidies after Trump says he will cut them off
[Independent] Senators have reached a bipartisan deal "in principle" to fund Obamacare insurance subsidies that Donald Trump said last week he would terminate.

The plan between senators Lamar Alexander, a Republican, and Patty Murray, a Democrat, is intended to stabilise health insurance markets under the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare.

The subsidies, officially called cost-sharing reduction payments, lower out-of-pocket healthcare costs for low-income consumers. They would be funded for two years under the agreement in exchange for more state flexibility in Obamacare.

For weeks, Mr Alexander and Ms Murray have been hammering out the healthcare legislation, which is separate from the Republicans' multiple failed attempts to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Mr Trump said he will support the deal, but called it a "short-term solution". He said he is still looking to overhaul his predecessor's signature healthcare law.

"The solution will be about a year or two years. And it will get us over this intermediate hump," Mr Trump said during a news conference in the Rose Garden.

He said the long-term solution is to provide states with "block grants" to help people buy private insurance.

Sr. Expectation Manager Mnuchin: 'Extraordinary' if tax reform gets done this year
[The Hill] Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Tuesday said it would be "extraordinary" if the Republican Party is able to pull off tax reform by the end of the year.

"It took Ronald Reagan over two years on a bipartisan basis to get tax reform done," Mnuchin said during an interview on Fox News' "Special Report with Bret Baier." "If we get it done this year, it will be extraordinary."

"Our objective is to get it on the President’s desk by December to get him to sign it this year," Mnuchin added, but cautioned that there's "no artificial deadline."

"We are going to work on it as fast as we can," the treasury secretary added.

Mnuchin called the GOP plan to reform the tax code critical to creating a "competitive" environment for American businesses.

"We have to get it done to create economic growth and competitive business system," Mnuchin said. "We have one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. We tax on world-wide income. We have a concept of deferral to leave the money offshore, you don’t pay taxes. Trillions of dollars are sitting offshore."

"This is all about making American business competitive," he added.

On Monday, Trump made similar remarks at a press conference with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), where he cautioned that Congress still has a "long way" to go on tax reform.

'Car Trunk' Abortionist Caught with Aborted Baby Parts in His Car Pleads ‘No Contest'
[Breitbart] Michigan Abortionist Michael Arthur Roth, who was caught by police with 14 containers of aborted baby remains in his car, has entered a plea of "No Contest" to three felony counts of Larceny in a Building.

The 75-year-old appeared in a Macomb County Circuit Court Monday in the latest episode of a saga dating back to October, 2015, when police discovered stolen drugs, abortion equipment, and aborted baby remains in the trunk of his car.

According to reports at the time, police in West Bloomfield, Michigan, found "14 containers of human tissue, possibly fetuses, medical equipment and large amounts of Fentanyl, a drug used for pain and sedation," leading to the suspicion that Roth had been secretly carrying out illegal home abortions.

The discovery of the cache came about as the result of an automobile accident in which Roth hit a child with special needs, critically injuring him. Police investigators obtained a warrant to search Roth’s impounded car and found the human tissue in containers along with the other contraband during the search.

Ohio: "Battlefield Cross" restored to national cemetery after outcry
[FoxNews] A Battlefield Cross marker which was removed from the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio, has been returned.

Veterans say the marker, made up of a helmet, a rifle and a pair of boots, is one of the most powerful tributes that can be paid to servicemen and women.

But, some veterans were outraged when they learned that the Department of Veterans Affairs, which runs the cemetery, had removed a Battlefield Cross because of a complaint that it included the depiction of a realistic-looking gun.

On Monday, FOX 8 spoke with the administrator of the cemetery, who told us that the removal of the marker was as a result of "guidance" from Veterans Affairs headquarters in Washington. The policy applies to all cemeteries operated by Veterans Affairs.

Then, on Tuesday, we received the following statement from National Cemetery Administration Public Affairs Officer Jessica Schiefer.

"The monument at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery was removed due to a regrettable misinterpretation of policy guidance regarding the acceptance of new monuments that depict weaponry. It has since been returned to its original location. VA will continue to honor Veterans and their families with final resting places in national shrines and with lasting tributes that commemorate their service and sacrifice to our Nation."

China-Japan-Koreas
Is Mt. Mantap Suffering from "Tired Mountain Syndrome?"

There have now been three detected and reported earthquake-like events subsequent to the most recent, very large (~6.1 magnitude) underground nuclear test conducted by North Korea on September 3, 2017 at its Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site. Recent media reporting has suggested that, as a result, the site may no longer be suitable for further underground nuclear testing. The three earthquakes were likely induced by the ~250 kiloton nuclear test; however, US nuclear test history at the Nevada Test Site provides evidence that such post-test tremors are not unusual. Furthermore, even in the face of what has been dubbed "Tired Mountain Syndrome,"[1] abandonment of the site for nuclear testing should not be expected. Such historical precedent, combined with the presence of two other, as yet unused tunnel complexes within the test site, leads us to conclude that there is no valid reason to assume that the Punggye-ri test site is unable to contain additional underground nuclear tests.

As a result of these nuclear test-induced earthquakes, new media reporting has appeared with headlines such as "North Korea’s Nuclear Test Site Could Be Unstable" and "Has N. Korea nuked itself out of a nuclear test site?" While these do make for eye-catching headlines, there was little substance in the articles to back them up beyond quoting the speculative fears of "civilian experts." Nonetheless, based on the severity of the initial blast, the post-test tremors, and the extent of observable surface disturbances,[3] we have to assume that there must have been substantial damage to the existing tunnel network under Mt. Mantap. If North Korea were to attempt to continue testing under this mountain (such as, in the area more to the eastern side), then we would expect to see new tunneling in the future near the North Portal, still under Mt. Mantap. A lack of new tunneling in this area would provide evidence that this mountain has been abandoned for future testing. However, complete abandonment of the test site as a whole remains unlikely.

At Punggye-ri, the presence of two other test tunnel complexes, accessible via the South and West Portals, provides sufficient means to continue testing at the site irrespective of test-induced effects to Mt. Mantap.

UNH Professor Calls For Gun Ban In The USA
I really despise getting lectured by professors on US laws and policy, especially ones from other countries.
[CampusReform] Following the tragic shooting in Las Vegas, a professor at the University of New Hampshire suggested to her students that the U.S. should ban private ownership of firearms.

Josh Fox, a student in the class, said the professor began by showing a Bloomberg video about Australia's gun-buyback program, then said it would be "great" if the US were to "follow Australia's example."

When he walked into class on the evening of October 11, Josh Fox told Campus Reform that he expected there would be some type of discussion about the shooting in Las Vegas, given that the course is called "Casino Management" and the shooter in Vegas unloaded his weapons from a casino hotel room.

Fox said he was nonetheless taken by surprise when Professor Valentini Kalargyrou showed a video about Australia’s gun laws, declaring after it ended that "maybe we follow Australia's example. That would be great."
You know what else would be great? You going back to your home country.
Kalargyrou, an associate professor from Greece whose specialization is in "human resources and gaming, with a concentration in diversity and disability issues in the workplace," opened the discussion by asking her students to consider what could have prevented the shooting.
Fine - I will continue to not give money to my alma mater, which has been hiring more and more leftists like this in the past decade.

Michigan: Judge reverses decision giving child custody to rapist
A Sanilac County judge has reversed his initial decision to grant a rapist joint custody of the child born from the act.

Sanilac County Probate Judge Gregory S. Ross ruled Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 17, that 27-year-old Christopher Mirasolo should not have any custody or parenting time over the child conceived nine years ago when Mirasolo raped a 12-year-old girl.

"I want to emphasize, at the time I signed the (initial order) on Sept. 22, 2017, I did not know that the defendant had raped the plaintiff," Ross told the courtroom.

It wasn't until the mother's attorney, Rebecca Kiessling, filed objections citing the rape that Ross found out about it, he said.

The Sanilac County Prosecutor's Office never presented that information to the judge, he said. The office gave him a "routine" joint custody order consented to by both the mother and Mirasolo, he said.

2 wounded in mine attack near Ramadi

Ramadi (IraqiNews.com) Two Iraqi civilians were wounded on Tuesday when an explosive device went off west of Ramadi, Anbar province, security sources were quoted saying.

A source at anbar police told Ikh News website that a landmine, presumably a leftover from Islamic State deployment in the province, exploded in al-doulab region, wounding two civilians.

It said security forces cordoned the area off and went on a search for other possible explosives.

Since Islamic State militants took over large areas of Iraq and Syria to establish a self-styled “caliphate” in 2014, Iraqi government forces, backed paramilitary troops and U.S.-led coalition, launched a wide-scale campaign to retake those regions.

8 ISIS Bad Guys die near Rawa

Ramadi (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi security forces killed eight Islamic State militants on Tuesday during a preemptive operation in Anbar, a security source was quoted saying.

The source told Ikh News that government troops and allied forces launched an operation in the desert of Rawa, west of Ramadi, some of whom were foreign nationals.

“Security forces and supporting troops have also managed to destroy three four-wheeled drives supplied with machine guns,” the source said.

Since Islamic State militants took over large areas of Iraq and Syria to establish a self-styled “caliphate” in 2014, Iraqi government forces, backed paramilitary troops and U.S.-led coalition, launched a wide-scale campaign to retake those regions.

So far, the offensives managed to retake Mosul, the group’s former capital, the town of Tal Afar, Kirkuk’s Hawija and Anbar’s Annah. Only Qaim and neighboring Rawa currently remain in IS grip.

Hamas Says Unity Deal at Risk if Abbas Does Not End Sanctions
[An Nahar] Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", warned on Tuesday that Paleostinian president the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
's delay in easing sanctions on Gazoo was putting at risk a landmark unity deal signed last week.

"The continuation of the punitive measures against our people in Gazoo a month after the dissolution of the administrative council spoils the general atmosphere for reconciliation," a party front man said in a statement to Hamas media.

Islamist group Hamas last month agreed to dissolve its administrative council, seen as a rival government in Gazoo, and return civilian power in the enclave to the Paleostinian Authority a decade after seizing it in a near civil war.

Chief among their demands, however, was that Abbas drop a series of measures taken against Gazoo.

Among these were reductions in energy payments for the territory which left its two million residents with only a few hours of mains electricity per day.

Hamas is due to hand over Gazoo's border crossings by November 1 ahead of a full transfer of power by December 1.

The PA's top border official visited Gazoo on Monday.

Previous reconciliation agreements between Hamas and Abbas's Fatah, based in the occupied West Bank, have collapsed over implementation of specific issues.

Security control of the Gazoo Strip is expected to be a major stumbling block, with Hamas refusing to disarm its 25,000-strong armed wing.

Jaguars apologize to local military for anthem demonstration
[SunHerald] The Jacksonville Jaguars have apologized to local military leaders for demonstrating during the national anthem in London last month.

Jaguars President Mark Lamping sent a letter to the director of military affairs and veterans in Jacksonville saying the team was "remiss in not fully comprehending the effect of the national anthem demonstration on foreign soil has had on the men and women who have or continue to serve our country." The letter was forwarded to Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry on Monday and available via his public email.

Most of the Jaguars, including owner Shad Khan, locked arms during the anthem on Sept. 24. About a dozen players took a knee during the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Wembley Stadium. Similar demonstrations happened across the NFL as players, coaches and executives responded to President Donald Trump's suggestion that teams should punish players making any sort of statements of protests during the national anthem.

The Jaguars demonstrated in unity as a team and then stood for "God Save The Queen."

"This was an oversight and certainly not intended to send a message that would disparage you, our flag or our nation," Lamping wrote to Bill Spann, director of Jacksonville's military affairs and veterans department.
As a Vet and one that isn't in Jacksonville, I still say fuck you all. You acted like spoiled children and pissed on us, on our country and the freedoms we love. Eat a dick and I hope you all go out of business. You ain't worth the blood that has been spilt for you.

#6  So, the NFL has become the next Studies department. You know those studies departments which were set up by universities to house those students they suckered into indenturing student loans who received just about useless degrees. In this case for the universities' athletic departments.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 10/18/2017 8:57 Comments || Top||

#7  Ever notice that the starting lineup announce will have which college, but not the degree?

No bio I have ever looked up brags about the degree.

Public universities are taxpayer subsidized. Money is fungible. Imagine if you had someone come up to you right now and make you write a check for all the kit, all the food & water, cost of weight room, transportation, tutor time, legal fees, recruiting cost, bail insurance, health insurance, promotional costs, and tuition of a single student athlete in any sport, especially football. Lot of money for less than 1% of the student population.

Peel that layer back, and we do the same thing with the high school sports magnets.

All of this for some Saturday afternoon to Monday night football.

It is all product forward, and was somewhat understandable as a way for many to even have the opportunity to excel. When the attitude shifted from opportunity to privilege, that so few receive so much of the school's resources and the ones who do not make the show have overall so little education - one I knew couldn't even read a tape measure, and all he knew was football and screwing.

To the point, these pro athletes are catered to their entire life. To me, it looks like a toddler used to getting anything throwing a fit at the candy check out aisle. Especially when I would have to sell my vehicle to pay for the dozen different shoes each athlete needs for workout, practice, and game conditions.

It is all for entertainment. An entertainment which supposes the viewer willingly enters a sort of fantasy zone, whether it is ewoks of meterball. When that veneer peels back and the character is the actor, and the actor is distracting to the story, the story unravels and is no longer entertainment.

So if a bunch of apex debutantes want to squat on a fancy playground, so be it, but I have better things to do than watch untalented bobble heads try to explain The Crying Game when I could be out with the kids playing football. Or better yet, teaching them how to use a tape measurer.

I am not saying sports are not important, they are. But guess which I still use - algebra or a football?

#9  The NFL commissioner signaled that the will do nothing to disrespectful players except try and buy them off with SJW programs that have Nothing to do with football.
Then a whole range of surrogates just blathered on about process, rights and understanding.
The protests are about being disrespectful to our fundamental national symbols, and the insults are taken by many in the core demographic of the NFL customer base as a personal insult. There isn't some middle ground or process to this, its visceral and serious. For many of us, the act is a FU with racial undertones of anti-white racism. Tolerance and converrsation are not bringing me back, I won't support people who insulted me.
Posted by: NoMoreBS || 10/18/2017 16:44 Comments || Top||

#10  NFL football is entertainment. Period. Fans watch games on TV or go to the stadium to watch to be entertained. They did not go to be insulted. But that is exactly what the NFL players did to the payers. The players gave the famous large F*** You (hat tip to Michael Moore, heh) to the people paying for their over the top salaries. The NFL needs to be shown when you give the finger to your market.

I would like to see the NFL have their tax breaks taken away, as well as their advertising revenue. They need to be made an example of. Personal responsibility needs to be a hard lesson for these spoiled players and owners.

George Soros has given $18 billion to his pro-democracy foundation
[Money.CNN] Investor and philanthropist George Soros has moved $18 billion to his foundation -- the majority of his estimated $24.6 billion fortune.

The Open Society Foundations, which seeks to promote democracy around the globe, confirmed the massive donation on Tuesday. A foundation official told CNNMoney in an emailed statement the move "reflects an ongoing process of asset transfer that has been underway for several years."

The Wall Street Journal first reported the transfer of the funds.

The Open Society Foundations has outposts in more than 100 countries, according to the organization's website. It has worked to combat authoritarianism, promote human rights, and support "marginalized" groups -- including refugees, the LGBT community, and minorities.

Soros, 87, "plans to leave the vast majority of his wealth to the Open Society Foundations," the official said.

The foundation has spent about $14 billion since the 1980s, according to spokesperson Laura Silber.
Soooooo, he's dropped an egg essentially as large as his combined fundings of the past 30 years. Big move. Big plans. Big news to come?
She said its current value is $18 billion, potentially making it larger than the Ford Foundation and the second-largest charity behind tech billionaire Bill Gates's foundation, based on figures from the National Philanthropic Trust.

Senior separatists detained as Madrid piles pressure on Catalonia
[DAWN] A Spanish court has ordered two powerful Catalan separatists to be detained, threatening a further escalation of the political crisis on Tuesday as both sides refuse to budge in their high-stakes standoff over the region's independence bid.

Protests broke out in Catalonia's capital Barcelona on Monday as news spread that Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sanchez were being kept behind bars on sedition charges.

The pair are the leaders of pro-independence citizens' groups Omnium Cultural and the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) respectively, both of which count tens of thousands of members and have emerged as key players in the Catalonia crisis.

They are accused of stirring up major protests in the run-up to the banned October 1 independence referendum in the region of 7.5 million people which has its own language and culture.

Robert De Niro Series On Amazon Canceled Over Weinstein
[PacificPundit] Robert De Niro, the foul mouthed, old washed up hack of an actor just had his Amazon series cancelled, all because of the sleazy liberal Democrat Harvey Weinstein. I guess not everything Harvey Weinstein has done in his life is bad afterall.

Variety reports that Amazon has elected to pull the plug on their untitled series from Silver Linings Playbook filmmaker David O. Russell that would have Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore in lead roles. The news also comes shortly after Amazon Studios head Roy Price was suspended in the wake of sexual harassment allegations. (Amazon reportedly did not act immediately when the allegations against Price were first brought up.)

A joint statement from representatives of Russell, De Niro and Moore agreed with the decision not to go forward with the series (which THR reports has cost $40 million already) which seems to kill any chances of it existing without Weinstein for another service/network.

Hillary Clinton appears on British TV after BREAKING her toe
[DailyMail] Hillary Clinton hobbled away from filming a British TV show interview on crutches Monday after breaking her toe falling down some stairs.

The former presidential candidate arrived wearing a surgical boot to the BBC program The Graham Norton Show, as she revealed she took a tumble in high heels while holding a cup of coffee.

The embarrassing fall forced her to pull out of a series of scheduled TV and radio appearances earlier today including ITV's This Morning and Woman's Hour on Radio 4.

Recalling her tumble, she said: 'I was running down the stairs in heels with a cup of coffee in hand, I was talking over my shoulder and my heel caught and I fell backwards.
That'll put a hitch in her giddyup.

Death Toll from US Drone Strike in Pakistan Rises to 26
[An Nahar] The corpse count from a dronezap on a compound used by the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
-allied Haqqani network has risen to 26, officials said Tuesday, less than a week after a US-Canadian family held captive by the turbans was rescued.

The barrage on Monday targeted a meeting of Haqqani fighters in Pakistain's remote tribal Kurram district along the Afghan border in the deadliest attack on the group this year.

"First dronezap killed five fighters from Haqqani network and minutes apart a second drone then fired two more missiles after turbans arrived to retrieve dead bodies from the rubble," a senior government official in Kurram told AFP Tuesday.

"So far 26 dead bodies have been retrieved and drones are still flying in the sky," the official said.

The US has increased pressure on Pakistain in recent months to crack down on the outfit.

A second government official in Kurram confirmed the dronezaps and the new corpse count.

Both officials said the strikes took place on the border with Afghanistan, with part of the compound sited in Afghan territory.

Israel Says No Talks with Palestinian Govt. that Includes Armed Hamas
[An Nahar] Israel's government decided Tuesday not to negotiate with a Paleostinian unity government that includes Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, if the Islamist movement does not disarm, recognize the country and give up violence.

The decision by Israel's security cabinet, announced in a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, comes after rival Paleostinian movements Fatah and Hamas signed a landmark unity deal last week aimed at ending their decade-long split.

The statement said negotiations would not be held until a range of conditions were met.

Beyond the initial three, it also said Hamas must no longer be supported by Iran, which provides it with military assistance.

In addition, it said the remains of two missing Israeli soldiers must be returned from the Gazoo Strip to Israel.

Britain
Britain's MI5 Says Running over 500 Terror Probes
[An Nahar] Britannia is currently running more than 500 terror investigations, with its intelligence services operating on a bigger scale due to the increase in threats, the head of MI5 said Tuesday.

"The scale at which we are operating is greater than ever before," said Andrew Parker, head of Britannia's domestic intelligence agency, in a speech in London.

"We are now running well over 500 live operations involving around 3,000 individuals known to be currently involved in bad boy activity in some way."

British security forces are confronted by an increasing number of attack plots and have managed to foil 20 over the past four years, the MI5 chief said.

"Just in the last seven months, we and the police have thwarted seven terrorist plots by Islamist bad boys" of the total 20.

Britannia has been struck by five terror attacks so far this year, four in London and one in Manchester. They included bombings and deadly violence with vehicles and knives.

Some of the assailants were among the 20,000 people known to security services.

Parker said the threat is "more diverse than I've ever known" and involves "snuffies of all ages, genders and backgrounds."

- Faster, harder to detect -
And he warned the plots could be carried out very quickly.

"Attacks can sometimes accelerate from inception through planning to action in just a handful of days," he said.

"This pace, together with the way snuffies can exploit safe spaces online can make threats harder to detect and give us a smaller window to intervene."

Plots are developed both within the UK, abroad and online, he said, warning of the ease with which potential attackers can learn how to build a bomb on the internet.

"We can't hope to stop everything," he admitted, despite a record 379 terror-related arrests in the 12 months to June.

Four assailants were killed by police this year during the course of attacks in London: one outside parliament and three others near London Bridge.

Another bad boy died in a suicide kaboom in Manchester.

Two other men have been charged over separate terror attacks -- a bomb which partially detonated on the London Underground last month, and an attack on worshipers outside a mosque in the capital in June.

Jane Fonda says she's not proud of America on live television, would get down on all fours to protest with NFL ‐ Video
[ConservativeFiringLine] While appearing on BBC’s "Hardtalk" last week, Jane Fonda
Whose father made sure the Harvey Weinsteins of her day were kept at bay.
was asked by Stephen Sackur if she’s proud of America today. Her answer was an emphatic "no," Breitbart reported on Monday.

"Let me ask you a simple question, are you proud of are you proud of America today?" Sackur asked.

"No!" she declared. "But, I’m proud of the resistance. I’m proud of the people who are turning out in unprecedented numbers and continue and continue over and over and over again to protest what Trump is doing. I’m very proud of them, that core."

Breitbart added:

Later in the segment, Fonda offered her thoughts on the NFL protests and was asked if she would participate. She said she would not only participate by getting down on a knee, but she would get down on both knees or on all fours if necessary.

"I would take a knee," she said. "I would take two knees. I’d get on all fours if necessary." She went on to falsely claim that President Trump is "manipulating" it to appear as though the protest has something to do with the military.

Europe
10 Held in France over Suspected Plot to Attack Politicians, Mosques
[An Nahar] Ten people were tossed in the slammer
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
in La Belle France on Tuesday over a suspected plot to target mosques and politicians, including a government front man, a source close to the investigation told AFP.

The arrests by anti-terror police of suspects aged 17-25 were part of an investigation into far-right activists, the source said.

The nine men and one woman are suspected of links to Logan Alexandre Nisin, a former myrmidon of the far-right group Action Francaise Provence who was arrested in June, the source said.

Another source named the targeted politicians as government front man Christophe Castaner and radical left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon.

The suspects, taken into custody for "association with terrorist wrongdoers," were also thought to be plotting to target migrants colonists as well as mosques.

"They were only in the earliest planning stages," one source said.

A 21-year-old former Action Francaise member was charged in July after making threatening posts on social networks against migrants colonists and jihadists, the sources said.

Nisin was arrested near Marseille on June 28 after posting that he planned to attack blacks, jihadists, migrants colonists and "scum."

Local prosecutors took up the case initially before the anti-terror prosecutors took it over.

One of the probe sources said Sherlocks had determined that Nisin, who possessed arms and practiced shooting, had the intention of following through with his threats.

Iraq
4 Turkish soldiers die in N. Iraq
ANKARA: Four Turkish soldiers were killed in northern Iraq in two separate attacks blamed on Kurdish militants, the Turkish military said on Tuesday.

Five other soldiers were injured when two improvised explosive devices exploded on Monday in the Zap region of northern Iraq, not far from Turkey’s southeastern border.

The army blamed a “separatist terrorist organization” — Turkey’s official term for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) — for the blasts.

Clashes broke out immediately after the first of the attacks, the military said, as it reported it had killed 16 PKK members in air strikes in the past 24 hours.

It was not possible to independently verify the toll.

Since the PKK launched its insurgency in Turkey in 1984, over 40,000 people have been killed. The group is blacklisted as a terrorist organization by Ankara, the United States and the European Union.

After the collapse of a two-year cease-fire in 2015, Turkish military operations against the PKK intensified in southeastern Turkey.

Turkey regularly conducts air raids against PKK militants who have rear bases in the Qandil mountain area of Iraq, while Turkish ground troops sometimes stage incursions into the area.

The incident comes at a time of high tensions in Iraq following the controversial non-binding independence vote held by Iraqi Kurdistan last month, which was bitterly opposed by Turkey and Baghdad.

The blasts took place outside areas held by the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

Iran Warns Europe against New Nuke Deal Conditions
[An Nahar] A top adviser to Iran's supreme leader warned European governments on Tuesday against imposing new conditions on the nuclear deal.

"To say that they accept the JCPOA (nuclear deal) but should negotiate on Iran's regional presence or talk about Iran's missile defenses is to set conditions on the JCPOA, and this is not at all acceptable," said Ali Akbar Velayati, senior foreign policy adviser to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"This is not Europeans' right. The JCPOA has no conditions and it must be implemented according to what was signed," he said in comments carried by the state broadcaster.

In a call with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani on Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron said talks on regional security and Iran's ballistic missile program were necessary to ensure the survival of the 2015 nuclear deal.

Without referring directly to Macron, Velayati said European leaders "should take more care in their remarks and demands."

Afghanistan
ANA captures district in Farah in counterattack
The Shebkoh Qala-e-Kah district in Farah province, in Afghanistan’s west, fell to the Taliban following a coordinated attack by insurgents on Monday night but the area was retaken by security force members after few hours, the Ministry of Interior confirmed.

“A massive attack was launched in Farah and the district was evacuated for one to two hours but the security forces pushed back the Taliban from the district,” the deputy interior minister for security, Gen. Murad Ali Murad, said at a press conference on Tuesday.

According to tribal elders, a lack of security forces was the reason for the collapse.

“Lack of personnel and trained officers is the reason why the district collapsed. The insurgents entered the district for two hours and have destroyed military facilities,” Abdul Satar Husaini, a tribal elder said.

Osman Farahi an MP from Farah province meanwhile said the presence of the Taliban’s leader in insecure parts of the province is also a reason why the district fell to the Taliban.

“I have told security officials that (Taliban’s leader) Mullah Haibatullah has come to Farah and one of the reasons behind the collapse of the district is this issue and it should be considered serious,” said Farahi.

Farah residents meanwhile said in the past week telecommunication companies have been shut down in the province and they cannot report insecurity incidents to government.

US court rejects Guantanamo detainee’s appeal
[DAWN] The US Supreme Court on Monday paved the way for a Guantanamo Bay detainee accused of being the criminal mastermind of the 2000 bombing of the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole in a Yemeni port to go on trial before an American war crimes military tribunal.

The justices declined to hear an appeal by Saudi defendant Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, who argues that the tribunal lacks the jurisdiction to conduct the trial.

His lawyers said that because the United States was not engaged in "hostilities" with Al Qaeda, which carried out the bombing, at the time of the attack, his acts were not crimes of war.

A three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled against him on a 2-1 vote in August 2016. His trial is due to be held at the Guantanamo Bay where he has been held since 2006.

#1  Yamashita vs Styer

[No. L-129. December 19, 1945]TOMOYUKI YAMASHITA, petitioner, vs. WILHELM D. STYER, Commanding General,United States Army Forces, Western Pacific, respondent

1.HABEAS CORPUS; PRISONER OF WAR; IMPROPER WHEN RELEASE OFPETITIONER is NOT SOUGHT; DEGREE OF CONFINEMENT A MATTER OF MILITARY MEASURE.

A petition for habeas corpus is untenable when it seeks no discharge of petitioner from confinement but merely a restoration to his former status as a prisoner of war, to be interned, not confined. The relative difference as to the degree of confinement in such case is a matter of military measure, disciplinary in character, beyond the jurisdiction of civil courts.

2.PROHIBITION; CANNOT ISSUE AGAINST ONE NOT MADE PARTY RESPONDENT.

As the military commission is not made party respondent, although it may be acting,as alleged, without jurisdiction, no order may be issued requiring it to refrain from trying the petitioner.

3.ID.; JURISDICTION OF ClVIL COURTS OVER UNITED STATES ARMY DURINGSTATE OF WAR.

The civil courts have no jurisdiction over the United States Army before the state of war expires, and any attempt to exercise such jurisdiction would be considered as a violation of this country's faith, which this court should not bethe last to keep and uphold.

4.ID.; ID.; TERMINATION OF WAR.

War is not ended simply because hostilities have ceased. After cessation of armed hostilities, incidents of war may remain pending which should be disposed of as in time of war. "An important incident to aconduct of war is the adoption of measures by the military command not only to repel and defeat the enemies but to seize and subject to disciplinary measures those enemies who in their attempt to thwart or impede our military effort have violated the law of war."

Haarvard professor fantasizes about how Crooked Hillary could still be president
[NEWSWEEK] Sure, it's been more than 340 days since Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
beat Perennial Presidential Campaigner Hillary Crooked Hillary Clinton
... former first lady, former secretary of state, former presidential candidate, Conqueror of Benghazi, Heroine of Tuzla, formerly described by her supporters as the smartest woman in the world, usually described by the rest of us as The Thing That Wouldn't Go Away...
, but there's still one very narrow, highly unlikely and entirely unprecedented way that Clinton could become president.
Sure she could.
And it has some Democratic die-hards dreaming again.
... while they're not busy Resisting™.
Harvard University professor
Naturally.
Lawrence Lessig offered a Clinton path to the presidency on Medium, putting forward a series of "if/then" scenarios that lead to House Speaker Paul Ryan
...Speaker of the House, U.S. Representative for Wisconsin's 1st congressional district, serving since 1999. He is a member of the Republican Party. He proposed an alternative to President Obama's 2011 budget and made himself the target of both Democrat and Republican verbal pies...
handing the White House keys to Clinton.
The longer a chain of if/then scenarios, the less likely a particular result will occur.
Here's how constitutional law expert Lessig lays it out:
  • If number 1: If Trump is definitively found to have colluded directly with Russia, he would be forced to resign or be impeached.
What he's looking at here is a series of if then/multiple else if thens/else.
if Trump is definitively found to have colluded.(Don't bet on it)
and if he's forced to resign
            or impeached
                and convicted

else if Trump is merely suspected of colluding (Most likely. They can keep "discovering" new evidence) Nothing happens
        else nothing happens
  • If number 2: If Trump is removed, Vice President Mike Pence would become president.
  • True statement.
  • If number 3: If Pence becomes president, he should resign too, given that he benefited from the same help from Mother Russia.
  • There's been no accusation that he's been involved. He has no moral obligation to do so except in the fantasies of Dems.
  • If number 4: If Pence resigns before appointing a vice president, Ryan would become president.
  • First there's the unlikelihood of him resigning. If that did eventually come about, he'd most likely appoint a VP.
  • If number 5: If Ryan becomes president, he should do the right thing and choose Clinton for vice president. Then he should resign.
  • Power's not something that people give up lightly, especially if they're not obligated to do so. By this stage we've gone through a series of unlikely steps, with hands getting cleaner and cleaner, until we arrive at the point of a politician "doing the right thing" and then resigning so a woman of the other party who's regarded by his party (and by independents) as a serial liar and, given her behavior since the election, mentally unstable can take over without having to win an election..
"The answer seems unavoidable: He should nominate the person defeated by the treason of his own party, and then step aside and let her become the president," Lessig writes.
Perhaps the answer's unavoidable to fantasists. If I was a gambling guy, I'd say there were a lot more chances against it than in favor.
"Without doubt, if Ryan did the right thing, that would be the most extraordinary event in the history of America since the Confederate Army fired on Fort Sumter. But unlike that, this event would build the union, not divide it."
Nope. It would give the party of the Confederacy its way.
Lessig, who briefly ran for the Democratic nomination in 2015, adds that Clinton would then appoint Ryan to be veep out of political goodwill.
And he would coincidentally retire as a "dead broke" very rich man, rich beyond his widest dreams, to die soon after of "natural causes."
Americans can only assume that while busy being a president who can read policy documents longer than one page, she'd stop her endless press tour and figure out how to keep the nation from getting nuked.
She can burn the midnight oil instead of reading executive summaries of things she won't be able to recall. Meanwhile, the people who elected Trump will be Resisting™.

Pakistan wants to cooperate in bringing peace to Afghanistan, NSA Janjua tells British envoy
[DAWN] Pakistain wants to extend its complete cooperation in bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan and no one should be allowed to ruin the cordial relations between the two countries by indulging in the blame game, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nasser Janjua informed Britannia's Special Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistain, Owen Jenkin, on Tuesday.

Jenkin and High Commissioner Thomas Drew had called on Janjua to discuss the various aspects of the prevailing situation as well as a way forward to bring peace and stability in the country as well as the region, read a statement issued after the meeting.

Janjua expressed satisfaction over the recent positive developments between Pakistain and Afghanistan and said that Islamabad recognises the prevailing optimism very positively and more so as an opportunity to work together.

"The army chief's visit to Afghanistan and the reciprocal warmth shown by Afghanistan has opened a new door to re-established our cooperative framework to proceed further," he said while appreciating Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
for presenting a cordial and cooperative outlook of his country.

"All we need is the positivity and confidence from the governments of Afghanistan and United States. We should not be hurt anymore by blame game. It is not by way of coercion but surely by way of a greater understanding that Pakistain wants to extend full cooperation to help seek peace and stability in Afghanistan," the NSA was quoted as saying.

"We understand that we have a common future with Afghanistan " he added.

Janjua reiterated that Pakistain and Afghanistan needed to resume and strengthen political, diplomatic, military and intelligence cooperative framework at all levels

Iranian Guards Commander Killed in Syria
[An Nahar] A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander has been killed during fighting in Syria, Iran's state media reported on Tuesday.

"Brigadier General Abdollah Khosravi, a senior war veteran, was martyred on Saturday in Syria," the Basij news agency said without giving further details.

According to Fars news agency, Khosravi was commander of the Fatehin Battalion, made up of Iranian volunteers fighting in Iraq and Syria.

Its members are drawn from the powerful Basij militia, a volunteer force linked to the Revolutionary Guards and sometimes used for domestic security inside Iran.

Iran denies sending professional troops to fight in Iraq and Syria, saying it has only provided military advisers and organized brigades made up of volunteers from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistain.

Khosravi will be buried in his home town of Arak in central Iran on Thursday, along with Afghan recruit Javid Hosseini, state broadcaster IRIB said.

Iranian media regularly report on the funerals of Iranian, Afghan and Pak "deaders" killed in fighting in Syria.

Authorities rarely issue official casualty figures.

The most recent corpse count, from the veterans' organization in March, was 2,100. It gave no details on how many were foreign recruits.

Philippine Troops Hunt IS 'Financier' in Rebel City
[An Nahar] Philippine troops were Tuesday hunting down a Malaysian turban tipped to take over as the head of the Islamic State

group in Southeast Asia, after the killing of the organization's former leader.

Mahmud Ahmad is the top remaining target for Philippine forces battling to end the nearly five-month siege of Marawi that has claimed more than 1,000 lives and left the Moslem-majority city in ruins.

The military claimed a major breakthrough Monday when it announced the death of Isnilon Hapilon, said by President Rodrigo Duterte and security analysts to be a key figure in the IS push to establish a Southeast Asian caliphate as they suffer battlefield defeats in Iraq and Syria.

"Mahmud remains... one of our high-value targets in the operations being conducted," military front man Major-General Restituto Padilla said Tuesday.

He added troops were fighting in a zone comprising about 60 to 80 buildings in the ruined city.

"We are focused on a ground offensive because the fighting is too close."

Padilla said Mahmud Ahmad was among 20 to 30 turbans, including up to eight imported muscle, remaining in Marawi, Padilla said. They are still holding about 20 hostages.

Terrorism expert Ahmad Kumar Ramakrishna from Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies said if Mahmud Ahmad survived he would likely take over the leadership of IS-linked fighters in the southern Philippines.

The turban is also reported to be a university lecturer in his home country who was in charge of raising finances from abroad for the jihadists and recruitment.

Tripoli port closed in response to fighting
Tunis, 17 October 2017:

Clashes continued today in Tripoli’s Ghararat district near Mitiga airport and next to Suq Al-Juma despite an announcement by the Rada (“Deterrence”) forces of Abdul Rauf Kara that they had contained the situation and were in full control of the area.

This afternoon, Tripoli port was closed by militiamen and, with it, the Corniche from Busetta to past the Radisson Blu Mahari hotel, as well as other streets in the area.

“They weren’t Rada”, one driver who had been forced to take a different route told the Libya Herald. “They were civilians with Kalashnikovs.”

Elsewhere, though, there were large numbers military forces patrolling the downtown area.

Although it had been operating during the day apart from four flights which had to be cancelled, Mitiga airport was also again closed late this afternoon, with passengers and staff evacuated for their safety. Heavy firing could be heard and, according to an airport statement, the fighting was all around the airport, not just at Ghararat. Incoming flights were diverted to Misrata and it was hoped that the airport would reopen tomorrow, Wednesday,

In clashes earlier in the day, one of Rada’s top commanders was killed. Numeri Mohamed Al-Jamil, who was said by the force to have taken a prominent role in tackling local drug dealers and other criminals, died instantly when his vehicle was hit by an RPG.

At that point, Rada had already declared the Ghararat area a military zone, ordering people to stay off the streets for their safety, and saying that it had arrested a number of “criminals” there.

Reports of homes in the area being hit by missiles and of six people being killed as a result of the fighting have not been confirmed. What is also not fully clear is the relationship between those whom who Rada is fighting.

Ghararat has had a reputation of being somewhere to avoid and home to drugs dealers and the like, and certainly it is thought that some of its residents involved in such activities have reason to dislike Rada and want to attack it. However, yesterday, in a move that was presented as being to be linked to the fighting, Rada announced that it had prevented an attack in Tripoli by a pro-Qaddafi group from the south but now based in the Wirshefana area and consisting mainly of mercenaries. Among those it says were arrested were Al-Mabruk Juma Sultan Ahnish, from the south of the country, and Rifqa Al-Sudani, also apparently known as Imam Daoud Mohamed Al-Faki.

The latter was said to be Ahnish’s driver and supposedly a member of Sudan’s rebel Justice and Equality Movement, although some sources have expressed doubts about this, suggesting that Al-Faki is also Libyan. They were arrested in the Wirshefana area by local Rada colleagues there and sent to Tripoli.

To further complicate matters, the brother of Al-Mabruk Ahnish, Khalifa Ahnish, a member of the Magarha tribe, last night threatened to stop the Man-Made River water supply to Tripoli if Al-Mabrouk were not freed within 72 hours. In a video made inside one of the pumping stations on the line, he specifically threatened to burn it as well as close down gas pipelines from the south and the Tripoli-Sebha road.

Philippines' Duterte Says City 'Liberated' but Battle Continues
[An Nahar] Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday symbolically declared a southern city "liberated from terrorists' influence" but the military said the five-month battle against snuffies loyal to the Islamic State

group was not yet over.

Duterte led rain-soaked troops in celebration in Marawi a day after the military claimed a major breakthrough as it announced the death of the head of the Islamic State group in Southeast Asia, Isnilon Hapilon, in a gunbattle in the city.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I hereby declare Marawi liberated from the terrorists' influence that marks the beginning of the rehabilitation," Duterte said, speaking moments after kabooms and gunfire were heard in the city.

Military spokesmen later clarified that the fighting against 20 to 30 remaining snuffies continued along with efforts to rescue about 20 hostages.

"We are going to get them very soon. We're making sure no hostages and fighters are left," Colonel Romeo Brawner, deputy commander of the task force battling the hard boys, told AFP.

Asked by news hounds if Duterte's declaration was symbolic, Brawner said: "Yes, because we cannot really say that (the area) is 100 percent cleared because even when they declared the end of World War II, there were still stragglers".

Another military front man, Major-General Restituto Padilla, said Duterte's declaration was issued as a "go signal" for the start of Marawi's rehabilitation.

'Hungry Bear' Crisis Grips Far East Russian Region
[An Nahar] Large numbers of hungry, aggressive bears are approaching humans and have killed two people in Russia's far east due to depleting food sources, a forestry worker told AFP Monday.

Forestry authorities on Sakhalin island last week said 83 bears had to be rubbed out because they were hostile, a figure that has nearly tripled from last year.

"This has never happened before," a local forestry worker told AFP, asking not to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the press.

"There are not enough fish, berries, nuts," he said, adding that overfishing of local salmon was partly to blame.

"There should not have been any fishing nets installed at all this summer, there is so little fish, but they installed them anyway," he said.

Bears who come out to villages in search of food eat dogs and one recently bit a man's hand.

"At this time of year bears should be balls of fat, but these animals have almost no fat at all," the employee said.

A hunter and a fishermen died from bear attacks in September, regional forest ministry official Sergei Prokopenko told local media.

Animals have also attacked cattle and one family found a bear digging out and eating potatoes on their garden plot in late September, local media said.

The forestry worker said emergency services go to local villages to look for aggressive animals.

He expected the crisis to continue until November, when malnourished bears usually freeze to death while others go into hibernation.

Sakhalin is a large forest-covered island off the east coast of Russia that lies north of Japan between the Okhotsk Sea and the Sea of Japan.

-Land of the Free
After Las Vegas, we must ban high-capacity magazines
BY U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Florida)
U.S. Congress

Every day, pundits, politicians and newsmakers try to predict what’s next in American politics. Horse races, winners and losers and “top things you need to know.”

After the horrific shooting in Las Vegas, prognosticators had an unfair advantage. We’ve learned from our country’s recent history of gun violence what happens after. What we haven’t learned is how to stop repeating the cycle.
1) It ain't a "cycle." Calling it a cycle doesn't make it so.
This week, I joined Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-CT) and several of my colleagues from the Nevada Congressional delegation — Reps. Dina Titus, Ruben Kihuen, and Jacky Rosen — to work toward interrupting the tragic cycle of inaction.
The tragedy is in the thinking that more laws against the gun owners who did not help the shooter, or who were restricted by local, state and federal law from having the tools to counter shooters, will prevent murder.
We introduced the Keep Americans Safe Act to ban high-capacity magazines.

Like bump fire stocks, high-capacity magazines are designed to make killing more efficient, and not much else.

As a hunter I met this week put it, if you take more than one shot at a deer you’ll be getting the “white tail salute.”
The 2nd Amendment ain't about hunting. It's about holding the government at risk should they decide to become sporty, like banning magazines.
And even before the unspeakable violence tore through his city last week, Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo said, “I’m a very avid hunter, I was in the military myself, and there’s no need to have a high-capacity magazine for any practical reason.”
Sez you. I was in the military myself and I took the same oath as Lombardo, which apparently he has broken.
As we emerge from our grief after the new “worst mass-shooting in American history”— a title unwillingly claimed by the city of Orlando after the Pulse nightclub shooting just over a year ago — we are committed to finding policy proposals that the vast majority of Americans will support to help stop this unacceptable violence.
Trying eliminating gun laws. They don't help anyone, and they punish the innocent.
Combined with bump fire stocks, high-capacity magazines allowed the Las Vegas shooter to kill 58 concertgoers in a matter of minutes.
The shooter could have done the same thing in 15 minutes without the bump fire stock, and arguably without the standard capacity magazine.
But the massive scale of violence extends so much further. High-capacity magazines make killers capable of firing dozens of bullets before reloading. In the recordings captured by victims in Las Vegas, you can hear the killer fire 90 rounds in just ten seconds.
There is no "massive scale of violence" that involves standard capacity magazines. Those who have wantonly murdered with standard capacity magazines have done so because they were murdering bastards, not because of the capacity of the magazine. It is a critical distinction, one the writer chooses to ignore.
Bullets rained down on a crowd of 22,000 injuring over 500 people.

Limiting magazines to ten rounds would be a small step toward safety. It would also be popular.
The 2nd Amendment is not subject to popular opinion. Rights are God given and not subject to the whims of a coterie of tyrants who want to use the offices of government to commit theft and murder, all in the holy name of Public Safety. If you look over how tyrants came to power -- and maintain their power -- you will find that those who used the excuse of public safety were cynical liars who used a public sentiment to increase their power and the power of the government. And in so doing destroyed as many individual freedoms as they could in the process. What the writer advocates is no different.
Banning high-capacity magazines is supported by 72 percent of Americans, including law enforcement officers, military veterans and gun safety advocates.

We admit that this legislation won’t fix everything and won’t end gun violence. It won’t address the majority of the 33,000 lives lost to gun violence every year in this country, half of which are suicides.

But without 30-round magazines, mass killers would be forced to spend time reloading, precious time that could allow a victim to escape or law enforcement to intervene.

If that time could help save at least one life, it would be worth it.
If eliminating laws that hold the power of the state over gun owners would encourage individuals to arm up and help stop violence, it would be worth more. And in the process it would restore rights and civil liberties to the people.
We have already progressed through much of the usual cycle after Las Vegas. The headlines followed the same familiar form: this many killed, that many injured.

But the victims of gun violence are innocent Americans who deserve better. The families they have left behind deserve better. And every American today deserves better, too.
The victims were first and foremost disarmed in an environment in which law enforcement would not have stopped the shooting. In my estimation, it would have taken two riflemen to slow the shooter down and four to stop the shooting altogether. And the best part is, it is cost free to the government. Just get the government's boot heels off the people, and allow them to decide for themselves how to protect themselves. Kops protect themselves firstly, and their commanders second. Gun laws don't work in the US. We are the Arsenal of Democracy. Stop trying to pass laws that run counter to civil liberties.
We cannot allow ourselves to become numb, and we cannot allow ourselves to remember the victims of gun violence as mere statistics.

Will this cycle be different?

Banning high-capacity magazines is not a bold new idea. These devices were illegal until 2004 when Congress allowed the Assault Weapons Ban to lapse. That was a mistake, and it’s time to correct it by renewing restrictions on these devices which have no purpose other than highly efficient murder.
Yes, Congressman: Put the power to murder efficiently into the hands of the state alone.
It’s time for Congress to do something about gun violence.
Try resigning.
It’s time to convert all of our thoughts and prayers into action.

It’s time to overwhelm the gun lobby and my colleagues beholden to them with passionate common sense.

Let’s pass the Keep Americans Safe Act and ban high capacity magazines.

#3  In my estimation, it would have taken two riflemen to slow the shooter down and four to stop the shooting altogether.
IIRC, something very much like that happened during the Texas Tower shooting of 1 Aug 1966. A student gave his rifle to a local cop who showed up with only a handgun. Some civilians living nearby took their hunting rifles down from their mantels and started shooting back from ground level. A four man team got to the top of the tower, went through to dead & wounded there to kill the shooter. They themselves were in danger from being shot by return fire from below the tower. Years passed before the bullet marks at the top were repaired.

Syrian regulars attack ISIS positions in Deir Ezzor
Deir Ezzor (Syria News) Sources informed, on Tuesday, that the Syrian army forces and their allied militias managed to besiege the Islamic State-held areas, in the city of Deir Ezzor, Qasioun News reported.

The sources revealed that the Syrian army besieged the Islamic State-held areas, after recapturing al-Husseinyah Village, north of the Euphrates River, in northern Deir Ezzor. The siege extended from the areas of Hatla and Murat, in northeastern Deir Ezzor, the sources added.

Thus after besieging the areas, Syrian army forces isolated the Islamic State militants, who were in the besieged neighborhoods, from their areas in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor.

It is noteworthy that the Syrian regime is aiming at driving out the Islamic State militants from the areas located in western Deir Ezzor, while both the regime and SDF are willing to liberate the area from the radical group through two different offensives.

IS Jihadists Sliding from Defeat to Defeat
[An Nahar] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group seized swathes of Iraq and Syria in 2014, but its self-declared caliphate has now been crushed and it has lost its de facto Syrian capital Raqa.

Here are some of the major defeats IS has suffered as it faced offensives on multiple fronts in its ferocious battle for survival.

- Syria -
KOBANE: The Kurdish town in northern Syria became an early symbol of the fight against IS when the jihadists were driven out by U.S.-backed Kurdish forces in January 2015 after a battle of more than four months.

PALMYRA: This ancient desert city was seized by IS in May 2015 when the jihadists blew up UNESCO-listed Roman-era temples and looted ancient relics.

Syrian regime forces backed by allied militia and Russian warplanes ousted them in March 2016, but the Lions of Islam won back control by the end of that year before being expelled a second time in March 2017.

MANBIJ: IS seized this strategic town near the border with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
in 2014 and used it as a hub for moving jihadists and supplies to and from Europe.

It was recaptured in August 2016 after a two-month battle led by a coalition of Arab and Kurdish fighters backed by U.S. air strikes.

DABIQ: Syrian rebels supported by Ottoman Turkish warplanes and artillery captured Dabiq in October 2016. Under IS control since August 2014, the fight for the city was significant because of a prophecy that Christian and Moslem forces will battle there at the end of time.

RAQA: A U.S.-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters launched an operation to capture Raqa in November 2016. The battle for Raqa saw months of brutal urban warfare that leveled parts of the city as jets from a U.S.-led coalition pounded the jihadists' dwindling foothold.

On October 17, 2017, the U.S.-backed force announced it had "taken full control of Raqa" after storming the final few IS holdouts.

DEIR EZZOR: In early September 2017, Russian-backed Syrian forces broke a three-year IS siege of a government enclave in this eastern city before ousting the jihadists from much of the rest of it.

Regime forces have simultaneously pushed down the Euphrates valley towards the Iraqi border. On October 14, they captured the IS-held town of Mayadeen, some 45 kilometers (30 miles) downstream.

HAMA/HOMS: Government forces supported by Russian jets also pushed IS out of its last toehold in Hama province in early October. But the group still has a presence in neighboring Homs province, where it has looked to stage a counterattack.

- Iraq -
TIKRIT: The hometown of executed dictator Saddam Hussein, north of Baghdad, fell to IS in June 2014. It was retaken in March 2015 by Iraqi troops, police and Shiite-dominated paramilitary forces.

SINJAR: Iraqi Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led coalition air strikes captured this northwestern town in November 2015, a year after the jihadists overran it killing or abducting into sex slavery thousands of its Yazidi Kurdish residents.

RAMADI/FALLUJAH: The capital of Anbar, Iraq's largest province, Ramadi was declared fully recaptured in February 2016. Neighboring Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
the first Iraqi city seized by jihadists in January 2014, was retaken in June 2016.

QAYYARAH: Iraqi forces backed by coalition aircraft retook Qayyarah in August 2016, providing Baghdad with a platform to move on djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the country's second city 60 kilometers (40 miles) away.

MOSUL: Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory in Mosul on July 9 this year after a nine-month offensive that a senior U.S. commander called "the most significant urban combat to take place since World War II."

TAL AFAR: The last major IS urban stronghold in northern Iraq was declared "liberated" on August 31.

HAWIJA: Iraqi forces backed by paramilitaries and U.S. air power claimed the recapture of this besieged IS enclave on October 5 after a two-week offensive.

EUPHRATES VALLEY: Iraqi forces have also pushed up the Euphrates river to dislodge IS from a stretch adjoining the Syrian border in what the U.S. has billed as the "final large fight" against the jihadists in the country.

After the recapture of the town of Anna, some 2,000 IS fighters are believed to be cornered in an area including the towns of Rawa and al-Qaim.

US-Backed Forces Say Have Captured Raqa from IS

group, defeating the last jihadist holdouts in the de facto Syrian capital of their now-shattered "caliphate".

The Kurdish-Arab Syrian Democratic Forces, who have been fighting inside the northern city since they broke in on June 6, flushed the few hundred IS fighters left in the city from their last positions in the main hospital and the national stadium.

"Everything is finished in Raqa, our forces have taken full control of Raqa," the alliance's front man Talal Sello told AFP.

He said the SDF was combing the city for any remaining jihadists who had not surrendered or been killed, and added that a major mine-clearing operation was already under way.

"The military operations in Raqa have finished, but there are clearing operations now under way to uncover any sleeper cells there might be and remove mines," Sello said added.

The announcement came just days after the SDF said it was launching the final phase of its operation to retake the city.

There had been fears that the US-backed force could get bogged down in a protracted battle for the last 10 percent of the city where the jihadists had prepared for a last stand.

The SDF said the fighting was fierce Tuesday around the hospital and stadium, but their recapture was declared in quick succession, effectively ending IS's more than three-year military presence in the city.

Sello said an official statement announcing "the liberation of the city" would be made soon.

The anti-IS advance saw the recapture on Monday of the infamous al-Naim traffic circle, which residents dubbed the "Roundabout of Hell" because the jihadists used it for public beheadings and crucifixions.

- 'IS collapsing' -As the sun was setting over Raqa's west Monday, a group of fighters gathered for the dabkeh -- the jumpy line dance traditional in the Middle East -- to celebrate their native city's near-recapture.

Three months after Iraqi forces retook Iraq's djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the largest city the jihadist group controlled, the loss of Raqa will be another nail in the coffin for IS's brutal experiment in statehood.

The breakthrough in the operation to retake Raqa, which was launched on June 6, came after a deal was struck allowing the evacuation in recent days of civilians who had been held as human shields.

Under the deal, a total of 275 Syrian IS fighters and relatives also surrendered to the SDF, though it was unclear whether they would be given safe passage elsewhere.

After IS captured Raqa in 2014, the city become synonymous with the jihadist group's worst abuses and was transformed into a planning centre for attacks abroad.

The jihadists also suffered setbacks Tuesday in the eastern Syrian region of Deir Ezzor, where Russian-backed regime forces retook swathes of territory, further reducing a "caliphate" that three years ago was roughly the size of Britannia.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that regime forces had brought the entire area stretching between Deir Ezzor and Mayadeen, which was retaken on Saturday, under their control following a major military offensive.

"These are not desert areas, they are villages along the Euphrates (river) that were IS strongholds," the Britannia-based monitoring group said.

"The Islamic State group is collapsing under pressure from the regime in Deir Ezzor province," it said.

IS also controls territory in neighbouring regions on the Iraqi side of the border, where they are facing another US-backed offensive by Iraqi pro-government forces.

Science
The Sky is Falling!
Sometime within the next few months, the heavens will come crashing down.
What goes up, must come down.
Tiangong 1, which translates to "Heavenly Palace," is China's first space laboratory, launched in September 2011, serving as a prototype for a permanent space station that it aims to eventually build and launch. But six years after it first went into orbit, the 8½-ton laboratory is soon expected to meet a fiery and uncontrolled end, hurtling down to Earth and crashing somewhere ‐ anywhere ‐ on the planet.
Can we get a gambling poll going here?
In September 2016, Chinese officials confirmed that they had lost control of the space lab and that it would crash into Earth sometime in the latter half of 2017. In May, China told the United Nations that the lab would reenter Earth between October and April 2018.
Much of the space lab, which measures 34 feet in length, is expected to burn up during its reentry. But Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist from Harvard University, told the Guardian that pieces weighing up to 220 pounds could make it to the Earth's surface.
Where exactly the craft will fall is anyone's guess. Even slight changes in atmospheric conditions can alter the landing site "from one continent to the next," McDowell told the Guardian.
"You really can’t steer these things," he said.
"They don't have a steering wheel."
"Even a couple of days before it reenters, we probably won’t know better than six or seven hours, plus or minus, when it’s going to come down. Not knowing when it’s going to come down translates as not knowing where it’s going to come down."
Carry a steel umbrella.
Uncontrolled crashes of larger spacecraft, while rare, have happened before. The Soviet Salyut 7 space station crashed to Earth in 1991, while NASA's Skylab space station fell over Western Australia in 1979.
China launched Tiangong 2, its second experimental station, in September 2016. China is aiming to have a permanently manned space station in orbit by 2020.
The 2011 launch of Tiangong 1 was seen by some as a "potent political symbol" that marked an important step forward in China's expanding space program. It was regarded as a geopolitically significant event, part of China's broader space program through which it wants to assert its emergence as a new superpower.

This is why I've hated the print media since I started reading newspapers. They delight at trying to scare the crap out of its readers.

Afghanistan
Suicide Bombers, Gunmen Kill 71 in Attacks on Afghan Security Forces
[An Nahar] Two separate suicide and gun attacks on police and soldiers in Afghanistan left at least 71 dead and nearly 170 maimed Tuesday in the latest devastating assaults on beleaguered security forces.

The Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
claimed the more deadly of the two assaults, a coordinated attack on police in the southeast city of Gardez in Paktia province.

That assault killed 41 people and injured 158, according to the interior ministry, and left hospital officials calling for blood donations. There were desperate scenes as relatives queued for news of loved ones after the hours-long battle.

A separate ambush blamed on the Taliban in the neighboring province of Ghazni killed 25 security officials and five civilians with 10 maimed, the interior ministry said.

Afghanistan's army and police, on the front line against the Taliban since foreign combat forces pulled back in December 2014, have suffered shocking casualties over the past year. Their ranks are beset by corruption and desertion.

"The hospital is overwhelmed and we call on people to donate blood," said Shir Mohammad Karimi, deputy health director in Gardez, who put the number of maimed there at more than 200.

Doctors and nurses rushed to attend to the maimed women, children and police filling the corridors where some bodies also lay. Outside, university students formed a queue to donate blood, an AFP photographer said.

The attack, claimed by the Taliban in a tweet, began when two jacket wallahs driving an explosives-laden truck and a Humvee blew them up near the training center, which is close to the Paktia police headquarters.

The blasts flattened a building and enabled button men to force their way inside the compound, according to officials and the interior ministry.

"Most of the victims are civilians who had come to the police headquarters to get their passports and national IDs," a statement from the Paktia governor's office said.

A university student who was in class at the time said he heard "a big boom" which shook the building and shattered windows.

"As we were trying to find our way (out of the building) I heard a second blast and then the dust and dirt covered us in the class. Several of my classmates were maimed by broken glass," Noor Ahmad told AFP.

The battle between the attackers, armed with guns and boom jackets, and security forces lasted around five hours before it ended with all five murderous Moslems killed, officials said.

Photos posted on Twitter showed two large plumes of smoke rising above the city.

The second attack, in Ghazni some 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of Gardez, followed a similar pattern involving faceless myrmidons detonating an explosives-laden Humvee near a police headquarters then storming the building, Haref Noori, the Ghazni governor's front man, told AFP.

"Dozens of Taliban" were killed in the attack, Ghazni police chief Mohammad Zaman said.

Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
condemned the attacks and praised the "bravery and sacrifice" of security forces.

- Drone strike -
The attacks are the latest in a series of assaults on security installations, including one on a military hospital in Kabul in March which may have killed up to 100 people, and a devastating attack on a base in Mazar-e-Sharif which left 144 people dead.

They came one day after four-way talks between Afghanistan, Pakistain, the United States and China were held in Oman with the aim of ending the Taliban's 16-year insurgency.

Paktia province borders Pakistain's militancy-plagued tribal areas where the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network has a presence.

Tuesday's attack in Gardez began hours after a U.S. dronezap in Pakistain's Kurram tribal district
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora...
, part of which borders Paktia, killed at least 26 Haqqani bully boys, officials have said.

A senior commander in the Afghan Taliban told AFP on condition of anonymity the attack was in retaliation for the U.S. aerial assault, the deadliest targeting murderous Moslems in the Pak tribal region this year.

On Monday the U.S. also carried out strikes in the Jaji Maidan district of Paktia "under counter-terror authorities," said U.S. Forces front man Navy Captain Tom Gresback.

In Kurram last week the Pak military rescued a U.S.-Canadian family who had been kidnapped by murderous Moslems in Afghanistan in 2012. U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
has said they were being held by the Haqqani network.

The murderous Moslem group is known for its frequent use of suicide bombers. The Haqqanis have also been accused of assassinating top Afghan officials and holding kidnapped Westerners for ransom.

These include the recently rescued hostages Canadian Joshua Boyle, his American wife Caitlan Coleman, and their three children -- all born in captivity -- as well as U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, who was released in 2014.

India-Pakistan
Mufti Qavi appears before court in Qandeel murder case for the first time
[DAWN] Cleric Mufti Abdul Qavi appeared before a sessions court in Multan for the first time in connection with the Qandeel Baloch murder case on Tuesday.

Mufti Qavi, who is currently on a pre-arrest bail, appeared in the court of District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Ameer Ahmad Khan.

Talking to news hounds while arriving at the court, Mufti Qavi said that he has presented himself in the court as per orders.

"We will accept whatever decision the judiciary announces," he said.

As the hearing started, the holy man's counsel requested the court to adjourn the hearing until tomorrow so that he could prepare his arguments. The judge accepted his request and adjourned the hearing until tomorrow (Wednesday).

The judge also ordered police to produce Qandeel's brother, Waseem, and her cousin, Haq Nawaz, before the court in the next hearing. Waseem and Nawaz were indicted in Qandeel murder case by a court last year, however, they denied killing her.

Police had included Mufti Qavi's name as a suspect in the murder case of the social media celebrity on the request of her father, Muhammad Azeem, the complainant in the case, who in a statement before the police suspected the holy man's possible role in her murder.

Judge Ameer Ahmad Khan last week granted pre-arrest bail to Mufti Qavi shortly after a trial court issued his non-bailable arrest warrants in the Qandeel murder case.

Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Pervaiz Khan had issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of Mufti Qavi when the investigation officer informed the court that he was not cooperating with police in investigation.

The judge expressed had his displeasure over the slow pace of trial by police who claimed that Mufti Qavi’s lack of cooperation was the cause of delay.

Soon after the non-bailable warrants were issued, the counsel for Mufti Qavi had filed a pre-arrest bail application and the judge granted bail against a surety bond of Rs100,000.

Qandeel's murder
Model and actress Qandeel Baloch was found strangled to death in her house in Multan's Karimabad area on July 16, 2016. Her father claimed that she was killed by her younger brother, Waseem, in the name of honour.

Her brother Waseem was placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
by police in Dera Ghazi Khan later that night and confessed to killing her in the name of 'honour'. Accompanied by police at a presser, Waseem alleged to have drugged and strangled her, saying that she "brought dishonour to the Baloch name" due to her risque videos and statements posted on social media.

"There are other issues as well... Like the maulvi issue," he said, in an apparent reference to a controversy last year about Qandeel's selfies with Mufti Qavi.

Qavi's selfies with Qandeel went viral on social media in 2016, causing a nationwide furore, after which the holy man's membership of the Ruet-e-Hilal committee and the National Ulema Mushaikh Council was suspended.
