Israel-Palestine-Jordan
What Kind of Monster Stabs a Bubbe in the Back?
Is this attack for real?
Yes.
The Palestinian Arab teenage terrorists who recently stabbed two octogenarian Bubbes are not your average high school thugs. It takes a particular type of vicious person to approach a cluster of five elderly women taking their midmorning constitutional and stab two of them in the back over and over again in broad daylight.

These brutal kids cannot distinguish between targets and values. It seems that they are not alone--neither can the society in which they live. The value attached to attacking the elderly should be very low on the ladder of machismo achievements, and should invoke disgust. Palestinian leaders, teachers, parents, clerics, even terrorist leaders should shun this attack. But that's not what happened.

Palestinian youth have been indoctrinated to strike--to kill, to stab, and to run. The messages are all over the internet. So when these Palestinian Arab teenagers attacked a group of Jewish Israelis, albeit old and defenseless Jewish Israelis, in their warped teenaged eyes they scored a great victory. And they got away with it, too. (Although two people were subsequently arrested, they were quickly released). And in the eyes of their contemporaries and cohorts, they are heroes.

The terror attack took place mid-morning on the Haas Promenade in Jerusalem. It is a beautiful, picturesque, walking area that allows one to take in the glorious views of both the modern city of new Jerusalem and the Old City of Jerusalem as well as the hills of the Judean desert. The land it sits on is probably the very site descried in Genesis 22 when, after three days of travels, Abraham looked up and saw Mount Moriah, the place where he would bind his son Isaac as a sacrifice in the famous story known as the Akeidah. Beauty abounds. History resonates.

Arabs and Jews walk, jog and ride their bikes along the paths of the Promenade. There are often public concerts in the well-designed shady spaces and amphitheaters along the paths. There is a wondrous echo chamber where one can call out and hear a series of echoes bouncing back from the various hillsides and mountains of Jerusalem.

At the heart of the matter of this particular attack is a singular message. All terror is horrific and deplorable, but some terror is worse than others. Planning and singling out children is the worst, or so I thought until now where we have a plot to murder Jewish grandmothers in their 80’s. This act recalls the horrible murder of Leon Klinghoffer in 1985. To refresh your memory, Klinghoffer was murdered when Palestinian terrorists took the wheelchair bound elderly Jewish man and threw him off the Achille Lauro, the Greek cruise ship they had hijacked.

In this case, the case of the two elderly Jewish women, there has been no word of condemnation by Palestinian leaders. Arab leaders around the world have said nothing. And certainly, the United Nations has been silent. Where is the revulsion against these heinous acts of violence?

Two Palestinian teenagers are showing the world that any Jew and every Jew is a target. Their method of attack was not like in a bomb attack, when whoever is nearby is hit and may include the elderly or the young by simple virtue of happenstance.

The objective of all terrorists is to frighten. In that, this attack was very successful. But it also displayed for all to see the sheer inhumanity of the attackers and their sponsors. There can be no justification for attacking elderly women from behind, for stabbing them in the back.

One would hope that parents and children within the Palestinian world as well as their supporters are asking themselves, their families and their students if this terror attack went too far? I have heard a few murmurs to that effect but nothing more, certainly no proclamations of condemnation.

Both elderly women victims are expected to recover. One was in intensive care and her wounds are being treated. The second victim is in a heart surgery unit. She is there because the stabbing affected her preexisting heart condition. That should not be a surprise, as people in the 80’s often have heart conditions. What is astounding is that not one of the five elderly women present during the attack, all potential victims, suffered a heart attack during the terrorist attack or as they waited for medical help to arrive.

My hope is that a lesson can be learned. That clear-minded people will see these terrorists for what they are. Will realize that their actions cannot be justified.

And yet, I fear that instead, this will be another example of how the poor Palestinian has no other option but to attack because of the evil oppressive Israel. How five Israeli Bubbes in their 80's became evil oppressors that warranted murder remains a mystery to me.

FBI Director Continues Blaming 'Viral Videos' For Murder Spike In Some Cities
Excerpt: [Huffpoo] At the briefing with reporters, Comey said he didn't know for sure what was driving a spike in homicides in some cities.

"It could be it's simply a collection of individual factors in different cities," Comey said in response to a question from The Huffington Post. "It's hard for me to believe that there isn't something broad that's affecting it, but maybe it could be. Maybe the reason that we're seeing a jump in homicide in different cities all over the county is driven by factors in those particular areas."'
Obviously we can't blame the White House lack of support for law enforcement and it's changing attitude regarding criminal activity. Let's just go with 'videos.' It worked fine for Benghazi.

#4  Shootings are up, but property crime is down. Many of the homicides are in Chicago, Baltimore, and D.C. Apparently following the news is not Mr. Comey's strong suit.

#5  Like the enormous struggle with the issue of the Bell Curve in academia, certain things that are factual lead to conclusions that are apostasy in the liberal mind. Thus, since the criminal justice system has disproportional convictions of minorities to their demographic percentages, there are two possible reasons. Either they are disproportionately criminal in behavior, or the system is racist and selectively chooses them. Since the former is an unacceptable truth, it must be the latter, and everything must be bent to fit that conclusion. To disagree to to be branded racist, a sin greater than theft or violence since it is a sin of hate, not avarice.
Causation for the behavior, like the 70+% illegitimacy rate, welfare matriarchy, alternative culture symbolism, victimhood thinking, the absence of shame, government subsidy, none of these things which contribute to the forbidden rationale are examined since they do not support the acceptable thought.

Target CEO Defends Pro-Transgender Policy, Stocks Crash Down Another $2 Billion
[Breitbart] The CEO of retail giant Target is zig-zagging between the many customers who are angered by his decision to open single-sex bathrooms to the other sex, the gender-identity progressives who pushed for the disastrous transgender policy, and the Wall Street stock-pickers who have chopped roughly $4.5 billion off the company’s value.

"We’re going to continue to embrace our belief in diversity and inclusion, just how important that is to our company,"CEO Brian Cornell said in a May 11 appearance on CNBC’s "Squawk Box" business show. "But we’re also going to make sure our focus on safety is unwavering," he added.

To mollify the public angered by his removal of single-sex restrooms and changing rooms, the company will add family bathrooms to all of its stores, he said.

We’re committed over the next few months, to make sure every one of our stores has that option, because we want to make sure that our guests be welcomed in our stores. But if there’s a question of safety, I can tell you and others, our focus on safety is unwavering, and we want to make sure we provide a welcoming environment for all our guests, one that’s safe, one that’s comfortable.

But Cornell did not offer to return single-sex changing rooms, which is likely the most unnerving element in the company’s new open-door, pro-transgender agenda. http://markets.money.cnn.com/services/api/chart/snapshot_chart_api.asp?symb=TGT

6 Palestinian teens arrested after rioting near Jerusalem
[IsraelTimes] Boys light fire near security barrier, throw rocks at security forces; no injuries as Israeli vehicles stoned in West

Six Paleostinian teenagers were tossed in the calaboose
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
near Beitunia, north of Jerusalem, on Thursday morning after lighting a fire near the security barrier.

The six, ages 14-17, also hurled rocks at Border Police who came to detain them. There were no reports of injuries.

Rock-throwing was also reported in the capital and on the West Bank road to the Etzion Bloc, where person or persons unknown pelted passing Israeli vehicles with stones, causing no injuries or damage, according to Israel Radio.

In Jerusalem, a 16-year-old Arab teenager threw stones at a car on Uzi Narkis street, which runs through the neighborhoods of Pisgat Ze’ev and Beit Hanina. The assailant was arrested for the attack, which caused damage to the vehicle, according to the Walla news website.

The incidents came as thousands of Israelis headed to national parks and beaches to mark Independence Day.

Earlier Thursday, a 20-year-old was stabbed and lightly maimed in northern Jerusalem. Police said the young man was attacked in the city’s Pisgat Ze’ev neighborhood and stabbed in his upper body. His assailant escaped and officials said it was not yet clear whether the attack was criminal or nationalistic in nature.

Israel closed off the West Bank and Gazoo Strip for 48 hours beginning midnight Tuesday-Wednesday for Israel’s memorial and independence days.

The closure began at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday and is expected to end at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, the army said, though the reopening will be subject to a "situational assessment."

The closure took effect soon after an Israeli officer was maimed by bombs at a West Bank checkpoint Tuesday evening, and after two Israeli women in their 80s were stabbed by masked assailants in a terror attack in Jerusalem earlier in the day.

FBI head: Islamic State group brand losing attraction in US
[AlAhram] FBI Director James Comey says fewer Americans are traveling to fight alongside the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group. He says the group's influence in the United States appears to be on the decline.
What about other jihadi groups? Or making bombs in the kitchen of your mother and choosing to make jihad in the neighbourhood?
Comey told news hounds at a roundtable discussion Wednesday that the number of Americans who have gone or have tried to join the group has dropped to about one per month. It used to be a half-dozen or more a month.

He said there's "no doubt" that something has happened to diminish the attractiveness of the Islamic State group to Americans.

Comey said the FBI has "north of 1,000" cases in which agents are trying to evaluate a subject's level of radicalization and potential for violence.

Top Hezbollah commander in Syria Mustafa Badreddine killed by Israel, group says
[IsraelTimes] Mustafa Badreddine, wanted by US and Special Tribunal on Leb, said assassinated in Arclight airstrike on Damascus airport

The pro-Hezbollah al-Mayadeen news outlet reported early Friday that top Hezbollah operative Mustafa Badreddine was killed in a purported Israeli Arclight airstrike in Syria earlier in the week.

The reported attack took place near the Damascus airport on Tuesday.

Badreddine, 55, is said to have inherited the leadership of Hezbollah’s military operations from former commander and cousin Imad Mughniyeh, who is also believed to have been assassinated by Israel in 2008.

Badreddine has had a long career leading terror attacks and military operations for Hezbollah. He is being tried in absentia in The Hague for his alleged involvement in the liquidation of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.

His latest role in the organization was as its chief operational commander in Syria, where the Iran-backed group has sent thousands of fighters to prop up the regime of dictator Bashir al-Assad.

According to a July 2015 US Treasury statement announcing sanctions against him, Badreddine "is assessed to be responsible for Hizballah’s military operations in Syria since 2011, including the movement of Hizballah [Hezbollah] fighters from Leb to Syria, in support of the Syrian regime. Since September 2011, strategic coordination was handled between Assad and Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah on a weekly basis, with Badr Al Din [Badreddine] accompanying Nasrallah during the meetings in Damascus. Since 2012, Badr Al Din coordinated Hizballah military activities in Syria. Badr Al Din led Hizballah ground offensives in the Syrian town of al-Qusayr in February 2013, and in May 2013 the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
(FSA) confirmed that Badr Al Din was leading Hizballah’s operations in al-Qusayr."

Hezbollah confirmed Badreddine’s killing, noting in a statement that he "took part in most of the operations of the Islamic resistance since 1982."

There was no confirmation from Israel overnight of its presumed role in the killing. Israel rarely acknowledges its role in such operations, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly confirmed in recent months that Israel was actively working to disrupt Hezbollah’s arms smuggling operations in Syria and build-up of capabilities on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.
The Jerusalem Post has more on the ex-gentleman's career, including a list of his known names of convenience and a photo from happier days.

#1  Hat tip to Wretchard T Cat:

An Assad regime mouthpiece on Monday reported the details of the alleged Israeli flight path and smart bombs used in the Saturday night airstrike that killed notorious Hezbollah terrorist Samir Kuntar.

According to Syrian newspaper As-Safir, Israeli Air Force fighter jets fired their payload from within Israeli airspace, sending the bombs some 90 kilometers (56 miles) to Damascus, where they struck Kuntar’s sixth-floor apartment.

Syrian aerial defense systems identified the Israeli planes, As-Safir said, but since the planes were operating within Israeli territory, the Syrian army did not react to them.

Israel, for its part, has not taken credit for the strike, though government officials have happily acknowledged news of Kuntar’s death.

According to the Syrian report, two Israeli F-15 airplanes flew from the Hatzerim IAF base near Beersheba to the Sea of Galilee, where they fired four SPICE-2000 missiles. After the attack, Syrian search and rescue teams recovered pieces of the missiles, which were created by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the newspaper reported.

#2  He goes on:

The Russian air defense would have had a minutes, at most, to respond to the incoming. Badreddine would never have seen it coming. They can be salvoed, several to an F16. The Israelis could simply have saturated even the S-400s.

The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked. His wrath towards you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the firke. He is of purer eyes than to bear you in his sight; you are ten thousand times as abominable in his eyes as the most hatefpkul, venomous serpent is in ours.

You have poffended him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince, and yet it is nothing but his hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment. It is to be ascribed to nothing else that you did not got to hell the last night; that you were suffered to awake again in this world, after you closed your eyes to sleep. And there is no other reason to be given why you have not dropped into hell since you arose in the morning, but that God's hand has held you up. There is no other repkason to be given why you have not gone to hell since you have sat here in the house of God provoking his pure eye by your sinful, wicked manner of attending his solemn worship. Yea, there is nothing else that is to be given as a reason why you do not this very moment drop down into hell.

Fighting erupts north of Aleppo as ceasefire expires
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syrian government forces battled rebels north of Aleppo on Thursday as a ceasefire expired in the city itself, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and rebels sources said.

The fighting was focused around the rebel-held Handarat area which is important because it is near the last route into opposition-held areas of Aleppo, Syria’s biggest city before the conflict and now divided between the government and rebels.

The Observatory said pro-government forces had launched an attack in the area, supported by air strikes targeting Handarat in addition to the only road into rebel-held areas of the city.

The rebel sources said government forces had initially captured some ground, but this was later recovered. Syrian army officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

The 48-hour truce in the city of Aleppo announced by the Syrian military on Monday ended at 1 a.m. (2200 GMT).

Syria’s al-Qaeda branch seizes central Alawite village
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syria's al-Qaeda branch and allied fighters from ultraconservative rebel factions on Wednesday seized a village of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
's minority Alawite sect in central Syria, following fierce festivities with government troops.

The capture of Zaara, which was reported by activists and Syrian state media, is sparking fears of an outbreak of sectarian violence as activists say many families from the village are missing.

The development came as the International Red Thingy was expected to deliver the first aid in almost four years to a cut-off Damascus suburb besieged by government forces.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy was to bring humanitarian relief to Daraya in cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Islamic Thingy and the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
, said ICRC front man Pawel Krzysiek. It would be the first aid sent to rebellious Daraya since November 2012. The UN estimates the suburb's current population is between 4,000 and 8,000 people.

The civil war in Syria, whose population is majority Sunni, was sparked by a crackdown on anti-government protests in 2011 but it has also developed a distinct sectarian undertone. The Alawites are an offshoot of Shiite Islam and Assad, an Alawite, has presented his side as defending the country's minorities against a Sunni Islam terror insurgency.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group tracking the conflict, said families disappeared from Zaara after the Lions of Islam overran the village. Along with Syria's al-Qaeda branch known as the Nusra Front, other hard-line factions that took part in the raid on Zaara included Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
and Faylaq al-Rahman.

Separately, al-Qaeda's more powerful rival, the ISIS - also an krazed killer Sunni group - is in control of about a third of Syria's territory since its blitz in the summer of 2014 when it captured large swaths of Iraq and Syria. Both al-Qaeda and ISIS are designated as terrorist organizations by the United Nations and were not part of a US-Russia-brokered cease-fire that was implemented at the end of February.

Syrian state media said "terrorists" killed a number of townspeople and kidnapped others, adding that they looted and destroyed many homes in Zaraa.

World powers working to promote a resolution to Syria's civil war are planning to resume talks next week in Vienna, with UN-led, indirect peace negotiations between Syria's government and opposition representatives expected to follow some days later.

The Vienna talks aim to build on a US-Russia agreement announced this week to try to restore a nationwide cease-fire.

Key figure in Thai insurgency dies in Malaysia
[Bangkok Post] Masae U-seng, a key figure behind the separatist insurgency in southern Thailand, has died of tuberculosis in hospital in Malaysia, a security source said yesterday. Masae, from Narathiwat province, died in Kuala Lumpur on April 30. The source said his body was buried in Malaysia.

Masae held a top position in one of the six militant groups under the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN). He also served as leader of the rebel youth group, and he opposed the idea of peace talks being held between Thailand's government and the Majlis Syura Patanai (Mara Patani) umbrella group in Kuala Lumpur.

In 2004, Masae was charged with rebellion and racketeering after security officials searched his home and Samphan Witthaya religious school where they found documents about the 'seven-step ladder' theory believed to be a master plan for the insurgency in southern Thailand. Masae is thought to be the creator of the plan.

The source said Masae's death was not disclosed earlier for fear young members under his care would be upset.

He added Abdulasis Salae, a former teacher who is secretary-general of the BRN, has replaced Masae. Abdulasis was one of nine suspects arrested in Thailand on rebellion and racketeering charges. He later jumped bail and escaped to Malaysia.

Also among the nine suspects was Mazukri Hari, head of Mari Patani who represents the group in peace talks with the government, which stalled recently when the Thai negotiating team declined to endorse the terms of reference.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Tehran touts long-range missile
As Israeli air defense forces prepare to become the world leading distributor of Iranian missile parts.
TEHRAN: Iran launched a new long-range missile late last month, a general announced on Monday, trumpeting the accuracy of the latest such weapon to be test-fired in defiance of the West.

“A missile with a 2,000-km range was tested two weeks ago,” said General Ali Abdolahi, adding that it has a negligible margin of error of just eight meters.

“We can guide this ballistic missile. It leaves the Earth’s atmosphere, re-enters it and hits the target without error,” the armed forces deputy chief-of-staff said, quoted by the website of state broadcaster IRINN.

In early March, Iran carried out several short-, medium- and long-range (300 to 2,000 km) precision missile tests across its territory, mostly from underground bases.

The series of tests have come in for criticism from the US, Britain, France and Germany.

The Grand Turk
30 Syrian children sexually assaulted in Turkey refugee camp
A total of 30 Syrian refugee children, aged between 8 and 12, have been sexually assaulted over a period of three months by a cleaning worker in Turkey’s Nizip refugee camp located in the southeastern province of Gaziantep and administered by the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The disaster agency confirmed the claims, which it was “following closely,” while the suspect faces up to 289 years of jail time.

A cleaning personnel worker identified as E.E. “sexually assaulted” some 30 Syrian boys, the oldest of whom were only 12 years old, in the camp’s washrooms, daily BirGün reported on May 12.
E.E. isn't going to be feeling so good when the Turks are done with him...
The report alleged that the worker lured children into “blind spots” which were not seen by surveillance cameras by offering them money, around 1.5 to 5 Turkish Liras.

The children’s families became aware of E.E.’s persistent attempts to assault the children after a boy, identified as H.İ., talked to his father about the attack. H.İ.’s father filed a complaint with the gendarmerie, bringing the matter to the attention of the authorities, Doğan News Agency said. The families of eight children filed criminal complaints, while the families of the other victims refrained from taking legal action, afraid of threatening their status in Turkey, BirGün claimed.

Military officers inside the camp started investigating surveillance cameras and noticed that the suspect took the children to blind spots, providing evidence for the case.

The 29-year-old suspect was arrested after the complaints in September 2015 and now faces a total of 289 years of imprisonment. The indictment underlined that although no evidence of rape could be discovered during medical examinations, the children’s testimonies were consistent and there were no grounds for slander, as the families and E.E. had no prior enmity with each other.

Meanwhile, the suspect, who initially admitted to sexually assaulting one child, denied his earlier testimony, claiming it was “taken under pressure.”
"OUCH! OOCH! I'LL CONFESS! STOOOOOOPPP!!"
E.E. has been jailed pending trial since Sept. 5, 2015.

Arabia
Al Qaeda terrorists disguise as women for Yemen attacks
"Oh, you should so try the peach. It really brings out your eyes!"
While the Saudi-led coalition Operation Restoring Hope is on in Yemen to defend right, justice and legitimacy, the attacks and tactics used by the Al Qaeda terrorists show how mean those criminals are.

The terrorist organisation, as per photos of some militants eliminated in a cleansing operation against Al Qaeda insurgents in Al Makla area of Yemen, proved to be using criminal tactics in its savage attacks against innocent civilians, according to official and informed sources.

"The image attached herein shows one of their slain leaders who underwent a makeover - complete with feminine clothes and full make-up - to pose as a woman while executing terrorist offensives against civilians."

Such a criminal tactic proves that those terrorists have nothing to do with any religious or humanitarian principles. Their alleged courage and willingness to die in service of religion are baseless, they added.

"The Arab coalition forces, National Yemeni Army and Popular Resistance spare no effort to cleanse all areas of Hadramout from terrorists and sleeper cells to maintain security and ensure stability."

The Arab coalition forces, National Yemeni Army and Popular Resistance are facing big challenges and difficulties in sweeping the Hadramout areas and clearing them from terrorists, the same sources underlined. "They proved to adopting unconventional methods in their attacks like posing as women to mislead the coalition forces who chivalry do not approach women."

Though it is so difficult to hunt criminals and terrorists, the competent Arab coalition forces, National Yemeni Army and Popular Resistance have managed to detect and eradicate those criminals, they affirmed. "Disguising as women is a cowardly act that shows how immoral those militants are."

Indicating, the sources said the techniques and tactics the terrorists use evidence that their purported heroic rhetoric is nothing but empty words intended to lure and mislead young Muslims and influence them.

"So many graphic images of the killed terrorists have not been released for being heart-rending to public. However, they show how mean those terrorist leaders and criminals are and that they have nothing to do with all heavenly religions."

US Gen. Volesky: ISIS is weaker, but Mosul fight will be hard
QAMISHLO – Major General Gary J. Volesky, commander of the Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command-Operation Inherent Resolve, said that radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) is weaker that before, but said the fight will become more difficult once it moves closer to Mosul–ISIS major bastion in northern Iraq.

“As we’ve seen, as the enemy loses more and more terrain, they resort to some of these desperate acts,” the general said about the recent Baghdad attacks that killed more than 150 people. “The security forces in Baghdad have the situation under control, but our condolences go out to those families,” he added.

“As we’ve said, the enemy [ISIS] is getting weaker and weaker. And so, you know, as we look and we assess this with our Iraqi partners, I mean, they’re the ones that are going to do that mission,” the general said about future operations in Mosul.

India-Pakistan
6 IS operatives sent to custody
[Daily Excelsior] Six suspected terror operatives, alleged to have links with ISIS, were today sent to judicial custody by a special court after NIA submitted that they were not required for custodial interrogation in the case.

According to sources, during an in-camera proceeding, District Judge Amarnath sent accused Mohd Azeemusan, Mohd Osama, Akhlaq ur-Rehman, Meeraj and Mohsin Ibrahim Sayyed to judicial custody till June 10 after they were produced before the court on expiry of three-day NIA custody.

The sixth accused, Mohd Mustaq Seikh, was sent to judicial custody till May 19 when his 90-day custody period, since his arrest, will expire.

The six accused were incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
by the Special Cell of Delhi Police in the case for allegedly having links with ISIS. The Home Ministry had later transferred the case to NIA.

The NIA had taken custody of the accused, who were in judicial custody earlier, on the ground that the probe in the matter was at a crucial stage and they were needed to be confronted with other accused arrested in connection with another terror case.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had told the court that their custody was required in order to unearth larger conspiracy of ISIS.

It had earlier told the court that during the custodial probe conducted by the Delhi Police, certain names, codes and mobile numbers of some active members and motivator of ISIS, were disclosed by them.

These members were involved in furtherance of activities of their ideologies using Internet-based communications like Facebook, Skype and other platforms to lure youths in joining the proscribed terrorist organization, it had claimed.

The Special Cell had registered the FIR in January under the sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC. Later the case was transferred to the NIA and a fresh FIR was registered.

Taliban IED expert killed with 3 others after blown up by own explosives
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) expert of the Taliban group was killed in an kaboom in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan.
"Mahmoud! Are you sure you should be smokin' a stogie while you're handlin' [KABOOM!]"
The Ministry fo Defense (MoD) said the IED expert and three bully boyz were busy in making an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) when the kaboom took place.

MoD said the incident took place in Sojani village of Chardara district where the Taliban forces of Evil are actively operating.

The Talibs group has not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as at least 9 would-be jacket wallahs were killed after their boom jackets went off prematurely in this province last month.

Earlier, a group of 10 bully boyz were blown up by their own explosives as they were busy making an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in southeastern Ghazni province.

According to the security officials, the bully boyz were busy making the IED inside a mosque in Andar district when their explosives went off prematurely, leaving all 10 bully boyz dead.

The Taliban forces of Evil and bully boyz belonging to the other Lion of Islam groups are frequently using Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as the weapon of their choice to target the security forces.

The IEDs are the main contributors to the casualties of the Afghan cops but are also considered as a key factor in growing civilian casualties.

Venezuela UN envoy says sorry to Israel for ‘final solution’ remarks
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Venezuela's United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
ambassador has apologized to Israel's UN envoy for remarks he made during an informal Security Council meeting on the protection of the Paleostinian people and stands against anti-Semitism, a UN front man said on Thursday.

Israel's mission to the United Nations said in a statement last week that Venezuela's Ambassador Rafael Ramirez asked during the meeting last Friday if Israel was seeking "to wage a final solution" against the Paleostinians.

The Nazis' "Final Solution" policy led to the killing of 6 million Jews in World War Two.

Ramirez met with UN Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon's Chef de Cabinet Edmond Mulet on Wednesday, said U.N. front man Stephane Dujarric. He told Mulet he regretted using the language.

"He stressed to Mr. Mulet that he stands against any form of anti-Semitism and fully respects the millions of victims of the Holocaust," Dujarric told news hounds. "He also informed the chef de cabinet that he had personally apologized to Ambassador (Danny) Danon of Israel."

The Israel mission to the United Nations was not immediately available to comment on the apology.

Blast in Turkish town kills 4, injures many more
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Four suspected bomb makers were killed and 15 people maimed when an kaboom destroyed a village in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s mainly Kurdish southeast, security sources and the Interior Ministry said.

The blast occurred at about 10:30 p.m. (1930 GMT) in the Sarikamis district, about 25 km (15 miles) from the region’s biggest city of Diyarbakir, as Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) Death Eaters loaded explosives onto a truck, according to the Interior Ministry.

Four of the maimed were at death's door, security sources said. Witnesses reported hearing the loud kaboom from miles away.

The blast followed a car kaboom near a military facility earlier in the day in an Istanbul suburb that maimed seven people, and a boom-mobileing in Diyarbakir on Tuesday that targeted police and killed three people.

Turkey has been hit by a series of bombings this year, including two suicide kabooms in tourist areas of Istanbul blamed on ISIS and two boom-mobileings in the capital Ankara, which killed a total of 66 people and were claimed by a PKK offshoot.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran bans own citizens from performing Hajj
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iran will ban its citizens from going to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
this year to perform the annual Hajj pilgrimage, international news agencies quoted an Iranian official as announcing Thursday, According to the News Agency that Dare Not be Named (AP), the Iranian Minister of Cultural and Islamic Guidance, Ali Jannati, blamed travel to Saudi Arabia for failing to "resolve the issue of security" in the months-long discussions which took place between the two countries.

Jannati said in comments carried by AP: "They [the Saudis] did not accept our proposals concerning the issuing of visas or security and transport of the Iranian pilgrims." .
"You can't fire us -- we quit!!"
Tensions between the two regional powers escalated even more last year when an accident occurred during the annual Hajj season, resulting in the deaths of a number of Iranians who were among the causalities of the accident.

Government
Continued from yesterday: New Benghazi Witness Says U.S. Could Have Saved Lives That Day
[The Blaze] A member of the U.S. Air Force, who was stationed in Italy during the 2012 Benghazi attacks, insisted Wednesday that the U.S. could have done more to help the four Americans who died that night.

"I definitely believe that our aircraft could have taken off and got there in a timely manner, maybe three hours at the most, in order to...at least stop that second mortar attack and have those guys running for the hills, and basically save lives that day," the man, who chose not to reveal his identity, said on Fox News - "Special Report."

I would like to applaud everyone's comments from yesterday, most especially Mike Kozlowski's obviously learned explanation at numbers 3 and 5 which can be found at this link.

As mentioned in Mike's #5; with regard to approval from the Italian Government for a launch from Aviano to Sigonella thence Benghazi, it is my understanding that the Italians would most likely request permission from the government of Libya for our planes to operate in their [Libyan] airspace prior to granting (Diplomatic Clearance-DC). Standing DC does exist for refueling missions however. All that is needed here are flight paths and call signs.

Aviano is a USAF base operated by US Military and civilian personnel with all the resources needed to serve as a home base for US Fighter Aircraft. Sigonella is a joint Italian, US base staff with some Italian and US military personnel but mostly manned by Italian Civilians that are unionized.

Potential Obama regime hesitancy or unwillingness to act along with possible Italian obstruction, either political, labor union, or 'all of the above' could easily result in mission failure. Of course if one is seeking a delay or outright denial, requesting host-nation approval would appear to be a likely course of action.

It might be instructive to note that the U.S. Government response has consistently pointed to the 'time and space conundrum' as the reason for lack of military response. I have yet to see Diplomatic Clearance sited as a reason.

Again, thanks Mike. Additional comments ?
A big thanks from me as well, especially to Mike K.

A commenter below notes with some disbelief that we don't have a few air units prepared at all times for a 'hot' situation. Recall that on 9/11, home-front F16s were unarmed -- one brave pilot (I forget her name) had planned to ram an airliner if it was about to slam into a building. So I don't find it all that hard to believe that we weren't prepared, even at Aviano with Libya brewing up just across the Med.

One important reason why Obama and Hillary won't come clean, and why the press won't go after the issue, is noted by another commenter: we all know what Amb. Stevens was doing in Libya. That's exactly what Champ and the MSM don't wish to discuss. And that's why four men were hung out to dry, even as three of them didn't know why.

It's a defining characteristic for Champ: he wants something but he doesn't want to do the heavy lifting to accomplish it. And he doesn't ever, ever want the risk of public failure.

#2  With respect, Mike tells us why a close air support couldn't have been launched, presuming all the protocols.
Point is, nothing else was done, either. Not even any flyovers with aircraft not loaded for CAS, which, as it happened, were requested. The time to load out a strike is only an issue if you presume the thing will be over by the time you get there. How did anybody know? And you don't even start?
Panetta said you don't go in without intel, hoping nobody would remember that State and DoD were on the horn with the guys in real time. Nobody's had that much intel in war, ever.
Vehicles on the runway? That's why they make bulldozers. Presuming the Italians even had a clue.
Thing is...forget the time issues. NOBODY EVEN STARTED. Nobody got the word to try to get ready. Whether some folks started to prepare aid of whatever kind they could and were told to actually "STOP" what they were doing is one question. That's "Stand down". But where were the Start orders which, ultimately but--here is the point, unpredictably--were too late? It would be different if a couple of appropriately-loaded F16s came over the city an hour late. You do your best and perhaps you'll be in time. Sometimes you're not.
Here, NOBODY WAS TOLD TO START.
That, and I say this with respect to Mike's points, is the point.

#4  I concur Richard. I might further add that the U.S. gov't inaction continued even after the successful exfiltration of the remaining U.S. survivors from Benghazi.

Ambassador Stephen's journal was found by a CNN reporter 3 days after the attack.

Siting 'security concerns', U.S. investigators did not arrive at the Benghazi facility for several days following the attack.

#5  MK, thank you for your contribution.

I am not an expert of military procedures or readiness. I do find it hard to believe that the US Military does not have aircraft on standby for a "hot" situation in that part of the world. I'm not saying you are wrong, just saying it's hard to believe.

But all this is just secondary to the real issue as to the why Ambassador Stevens was in Benghazi. He was running Libyan guns to AQ. The press knows it, they just won't report it. Who gave him the orders and who was working with him locally and in DC?

#6  Amb. Stevens met with Turkish Consul on the date of the attack. No one to my knowledge has ever tried to interview the Consul. He was a remarkably experienced diplomat to be located in the Libyan backwater. In fact, he was the cutout between the Americans and the Turkish vessels that delivered the military goods to Turkish ports.

Europe
US activates Romanian missile defense site, angering Russia
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The United States switched on an $800 million missile shield in Romania on Thursday that it sees as vital to defend itself and Europe from so-called rogue states but the Kremlin says is aimed at blunting its own nuclear arsenal.

To the music of military bands at the remote Deveselu air base, senior US and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
officials declared operational the ballistic missile defence site, which is capable of shooting down rockets from countries such as Iran that Washington says could one day reach major European cities.

"As long as Iran continues to develop and deploy ballistic missiles, the United States will work with its allies to defend NATO," said US Deputy Defence Secretary Robert Work, standing in front of the shield's massive grey concrete housing that was adorned with a US flag.

Despite Washington's plans to continue to develop the capabilities of its system, Work said the shield would not be used against any future Russian missile threat. "There are no plans at all to do that," he told a news conference.

Before the ceremony, Frank Rose, deputy US assistant secretary of state for arms control, warned that Iran's ballistic missiles can hit parts of Europe, including Romania.

When complete, the defensive umbrella will stretch from Greenland to the Azores. On Friday, the United States will break ground on a final site in Poland due to be ready by late 2018, completing the defence line first proposed almost a decade ago.

The full shield also includes ships and radars across Europe. It will be handed over to NATO in July, with command and control run from a US air base in Germany.

Russia is incensed at such of show of force by its Cold War rival in formerly communist-ruled eastern Europe. Moscow says the US-led alliance is trying to encircle it close to the strategically important Black Sea, home to a Russian naval fleet and where NATO is also considering increasing patrols.

"It is part of the military and political containment of Russia," Andrey Kelin, a senior Russian Foreign Ministry official, said on Thursday, the Interfax news agency reported.

"These decisions by NATO can only exacerbate an already difficult situation," he added, saying the move would hinder efforts to repair ties between Russia and the alliance.

Federal judge sides with House Republicans against health care law
[Chicago Tribune] A federal judge ruled Thursday that the Obama administration is unconstitutionally spending federal money to fund the president's health care law.

The ruling from U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer is a win for House Republicans who brought the politically charged legal challenge in an effort to undermine the law.

At stake is $175 billion the government is paying over a decade to reimburse health insurers for reducing co-payments for lower-income people.

The House argued that Congress never specifically appropriated that money and has denied the administration's request for it. It says the administration is spending the money anyway, exceeding its constitutional authority. The administration has said it is using other, previously approved money.

Relations with US under stress for three months, admits Aziz
[DAWN] Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj PrunefaceAziz
...Adviser to Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, who believes in good jihadis and bad jihadis as a matter of national policy...
conceded on Thursday that relations with the US had been under stress for the past three months because of conditions Washington had attached to the funding of F-16s sale.

The confession was made by the adviser while winding up a debate in the Senate on an adjournment motion on the US decision to withdraw proposed subsidy on the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Pakistain.

The adviser said that Pakistain-US relations had come to a standstill in 2011 because of unfortunate incidents of WikiLeaks, Raymond Davis, Abbottabad

operation, Datta Khel and Salala. Since 2013, he said Pakistain’s relations with the US had witnessed an "upward trajectory".

"In the past three months, however, this upward trajectory in relations has witnessed a downward slide, as reflected in a decision of the US Congress to block partial funding for eight F-16 aircraft," he said.

Mr Aziz said that the US action might have been caused by concerns raised by Washington on the nuclear issue which had been categorically rejected by Pakistain.

Haqqani network still top US concern
"We have also rejected frequent demands, especially by the US Congress, for the release of Dr Shakil Afridi. The US officials, Congress, think-tanks and media, in tandem with our adversaries, have also been blaming Pakistain for supporting the Haqqani network without giving any concrete evidence to enable us to take additional action against it or other terrorist organizations," he added.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
Mr Aziz said, the Haqqani Network issue remained the top US concern at the moment. The Indian lobby in the US, he said, had also been highly pro-active in adding fuel to the fire, especially after the Pathankot incident.

RAF birds intercept 2 Rooshun aircraft over the Baltic
Fotos of the birds and actual encounter at the link
The jets, which deployed to the region less than three weeks ago, were scrambled from Amari air base in Estonia, to intercept three Russian aircraft approaching the Baltic states. The military transport aircraft identified as AN-26 ‘Curl, AN-12 ‘Cub’ and IL-76 ‘Candid’ were intercepted as they were not transmitting a recognised identification code and were unresponsive.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

This is another example of just how important the UK’s contribution to the Baltic Air Policing Mission is. We were able to instantly respond to this act of Russian aggression - demonstration of our commitment to NATO’s collective defence.

Four RAF Typhoon and pilots from II (Army Co-operation) Squadron from Royal Air Force Lossiemouth, were deployed in April to support the BAP mission, an enduring defensive NATO effort that sees alliance members without their own air policing assets assisted by others in four-monthly cycles. This rotation, which is the third consecutive year the year the UK has committed to BAP, will see UK jets operating alongside Portuguese F16s operating from Šiauliai in Lithuania. Last time, Typhoon fighters were scrambled 17 times, and intercepted over 40 Russian aircraft. During one launch last July, the Typhoons intercepted 10 separate Russian aircraft, including eight fighters.

Ethiopian troops pull out of central Somalia’s town
Ethiopian troops under African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM), who set up new bases in central Somalia’s town of Adaado, have on Thursday withdrawn from the town, residents said.
I think we'll be reading about this town (wherever the heck it is) in the next few days...
The withdrawal of the African Union peacekeepers from Ethiopia were reported after Ethiopian officials, who have been supposed to reach the town, have called off their visit to Adaado town. The arrival of the Ethiopian delegates in the town of Adaado was to open talks between Galmudug State and Somalia’s moderate Islamist group of Ahlu Sunna Waljame’a (ASWJ), officials said.

Ethiopia has mediated both regional State of Galmudug and Somalia-Ethiopian administration after several people were killed in an attack launched by Ethiopia’s Liyu police near Somalia-Ethiopia border.

Somalia’s moderate Islamist group of ASWJ did not comment on the talks reported to be planed by Ethiopia, in a bid to make negotiation by Ahlu Sunna and Galmudug State in Somalia.

U.S. air strike kills five al Shabaab fighters in Somalia
A U.S. forces in Somalia called in an air strike on Thursday that killed five fighters from the al Qaeda-linked militant group al Shabaab, the Pentagon said.

The U.S. forces had been advising Ugandan soldiers with the African Union mission (AMISOM) during an operation against an illegal taxation checkpoint when the Ugandans got into a firefight with 15-20 al Shabaab fighters. Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said no American forces were wounded on the ground during the incident, which took place west of Mogadishu, the capital.

“U.S. forces were not involved with this firefight. We were nearby but not directly involved ourselves,” Davis told a Pentagon news briefing, adding that the American forces were further back from the fighting, acting in an advisory role.

The United States has about 50 military personnel inside Somalia and has repeatedly targeted the group in recent months, including a strike on a senior al Shabaab leader in April and another on a training camp in March that killed some 150 fighters.

Tunisia gets US planes, jeeps to guard Libyan border
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The United States gave jeeps, communications technology and small aircraft to Tunisia on Thursday to help protect the border with Libya, where ISIS has gained ground and set up training camps, officials said.

The North African country was also expecting to receive a number of attack aircraft, Defense Minister Farhar Horchani said, though he did not give details on who would supply them.

Tunisia has already built a 200-km (120-mile) barrier along the frontier to guard against snuffies since gunnies trained in Libya targeted tourists in attacks on a beach hotel and a Tunis museum last year.

ISIS also launched a major assault on the border town of Ben Guerdane in March.

US Assistant Secretary for Defense Amanda Dory said at a ceremony in Tunis that the jeeps, Maule light aircraft and a communication system between them would help Tunisian forces improve their monitoring of the border.

Horchani said the US package was worth around $20 million. The US ambassador said it consisted of 48 jeeps and 12 aircraft.

Western governments are giving Tunisia financial and military aid to support its young democracy, which they are holding up as a model for the region since its 2011 uprising ousted autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali.

A small group of Islamist snuffies tied to al Qaeda is fighting in remote mountains near the Algerian border. Other Tunisian snuffies have split to join ISIS in Libya.

On Wednesday, four police were killed when a Death Eater detonated his bomb belt during a raid on a house in Tataouine in the south. That and a raid in Tunis were part of an operation that stopped planned attacks on the capital, authorities said.

More than 4,000 Tunisians are thought to have left to fight for ISIS and other Death Eater groups in Iraq and Syria. Some are returning to join ISIS in Libya, threatening more attacks on Tunisia.

Pro-Kurdish party calls for investigation into Turkey’s human rights abuses
"We'll get right on that just as soon as we finish the creme brulee. Would you like a splash?"
CIZRE – The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) said that independent investigators, including the United Nations Staff should be allowed unimpeded access to the Kurdish town of Cizre in southeastern Turkey, in order to investigate human rights abuses against Kurdish civilians in the town that has been exposed to a fierce military offensive by the Turkish army over the past few months.

“We would like to express our satisfaction with the call of Zeid Raad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, to Turkey on giving independent investigators, including UN staff, unimpeded access to Cizre,” HDP’s Group Deputy Co-Chairman Cağlar Demirel and HDP Group deputy Co-Chairman Idris Baluken said in a statement.

Turkey may take unilateral action against ISIL in Syria
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has sent a strong signal regarding his country’s readiness to take unilateral action against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) following a series of attacks by the group on the border province of Kilis.

“While our citizens are being martyred every day by rockets fired from the other side, what will we wait for from the allies,” Erdoğan said at an event called “Domestic and National Will in Turkish Political History.” “If so, we will pull ourselves up by our bootstraps.”

“We are doing all the necessary preparations to clean the other side of the border because of the troubles being experienced in Kilis, but we haven’t yet been able to receive the support that we desire from allies,” Erdoğan said.

Erdoğan again accused the international coalition battling ISIL in Syria of abandoning his country to fight the jihadists on its own soil in the face of regular attacks on Kilis by ISIL.

Around two dozen people have been killed in the southeastern province of Kilis by rocket fire from ISIL since January, prompting the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) to respond with artillery fire.

Turkey, a member of the U.S.-led coalition battling ISIL, also allows U.S. jets to use its air base in southern Turkey for air strikes on the extremists.

“The Kilis issue will serve as a litmus paper which will manifest the anti-DAESH [ISIL] coalition’s sincerity,” he added.

“We do not believe the sincerity of any country that has not seen rockets falling on our town as if they fell on Moscow, London, Brussels, Washington, Paris or Berlin,” he said.

Turkish daily Yeni Şafak reported that a 20-strong Turkish military team crossed into Syria over the weekend on a reconnaissance mission to seek out ISIL launchers to target in artillery strikes, but this has not been officially confirmed.

In its May 10 edition, The Wall Street Journal also reported that Turkey’s special military force carried out an unusual weekend operation against ISIL fighters in Syria as part of a deepening campaign against the extremist group. Citing American officials, who spoke anonymously, the U.S. daily said the weekend operation was part of an expanding effort by the TSK to push ISIL away from a vital 60-mile stretch of the Turkey-Syria border that serves as the group’s main lifeline.

The president also said Turkey had the right to not care about those who disregarded Kilis and the Syrian city of Aleppo.

“We also have the right to not care [about] those who disregard Kilis [and] Aleppo. It is not possible for us to agree either with the allies or the non-moral structure in the face of the current discourse and manners of especially European Union organizations and some countries in Turkey’s fight against terrorism,” Erdoğan said, calling their stance hypocritical.

“Those who stirred up the world when DAESH [ISIL] conducted attacks against them left Turkey alone in its fight against the same organization,” Erdoğan said.

Afghanistan
Pakistan's Ex-PM Thanks US, Afghan Forces For Son's Rescue
"Wait'll you get the bill..."
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani says his son was released from Taliban captivity because of the "combined efforts" of U.S. and Afghan forces.

"This combined operation was carried out by the American forces and the Afghanistan forces. My boy was recovered because of their combined efforts. I want to thank them because Ali Haider has been rescued after three years owing to their hard work."

"Look, good news is very beneficial for our morale here in Pakistan. I believe that this is extremely good for our morale. But as far as our counter-terrorism policy is concerned, we have to look into that. Did this happen because of that? I do not know, but we do have to find out."

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani thanked American and Afghan forces on Wednesday for rescuing his son from Taliban captivity.

Ali Haider Gilani was rescued on Monday by a joint force of Afghan and U.S. commandos who raided a house occupied by al-Qaeda militants in Paktika province, just across the border from Pakistan. He was kidnapped three years ago from his home town.

"This combined operation was carried out by the American forces and the Afghanistan forces. My boy was recovered because of their combined efforts. I want to thank them because Ali Haider has been rescued after three years owing to their hard work," Gilani told reporters as he arrived in Lahore from Islamabad.

Gilani was accompanied by Bilawal Zardari Bhutto, Chairman of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and son of slain Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Gilani, a stalwart of the PPP, was prime minister from 2008 to 2012.

Bilawal, who is a family friend of the Gilani family, said he and his sisters were elated by the news of Ali Haider's release, but was quick to add that further investigation was needed into Pakistan's counter-terrorism policy.

Ali Haider Gilani was abducted in May 2013, outside an office of the PPP in his home town of Multan, two days before an election. He was flown home on a chartered aircraft sent from Pakistan earlier in the day.

He was showered with rose petals as he got out of a vehicle outside the family home in the city of Lahore.

His rescue occurred partly by chance, as Afghan and U.S special forces raided the suspected al-Qaeda compound.

The force had an "inkling" a hostage was being held there but was not aware it was Gilani, said Brigadier General Charles Cleveland, spokesman for the NATO-led force.

He said four al-Qaeda fighters were killed in the raid. Gilani was with his captors but was identified as a hostage after he did not try to resist.

The rescue offered a rare moment of warmth and respite in long-running tensions between Kabul and Islamabad, which many in Afghanistan blame for fostering and sheltering Taliban leaders on their soil.

Terror Networks
ISIS is losing the war
That's a very narrow view of the situation. Al Qaeda plans to pick up the dropped baton of jihad, so the war will continue. And ISIS expects to be driven back and nearly destroyed before the tempered remnant bursts out with Allah's aid to conquer the entire world. Either way, the war will continue until those infected with the virus of Triumphalist Islam are either killed or surrender.
[CNN] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in Iraq and Syria, ISIS, as an organized military force in Iraq and Syria, is losing -- even losing badly. This does not mean the end of ISIS, and we may see organized (as in Libya and Afghanistan) and unorganized (as in Gay Paree and San Bernardino) bands carrying the ISIS label and banner for some time yet.

But these will be a mere echo (and perhaps even a mockery) of the force that carried out the shocking seizure of terrain in Iraq, threatening even Baghdad, a year and a half ago. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
the end of ISIS does not mean the end of Islamic extremism, and we should expect to see a resurgence of al Qaeda and its affiliates, as its splinter rival begins its death spiral.

Simply put, despite its quite impressive debut on the international stage, ISIS is out of its league. By trying to bring about the "caliphate" as a tangible entity, it has given its opponents, both local and international, a fixed target to strike.

The territory it controls in Iraq and Syria is now being attacked from the southeast by the Iraqi Army and Hashd al Shabi popular mobilization units (militia units of varying loyalites, mostly Shia Arab), from the northeast by the KDPand PUK Peshmerga (militias of the two ruling parties in Iraqi Kurdistan) forces, from the northwest by the Syrian YPG (People's Protection Units) Kurdish forces, and from the southwest -- at least nominally -- by the Syrian regime and its Iranian/Russian allies.

Further, all the Iraqi forces (save the Hashd) are being supported by U.S. airpower, the Syrian forces by Russian airpower, and the YPG forces by both. In Iraq, two major cities have been reclaimed from ISIS (Tikrit and Ramadi), in addition to a number of significant towns. In December, the Iraqi defense minister stated that ISIS control of Iraqi territory was down from 40% at its height to only 17% then. While no cities have yet been reclaimed on the Syrian side of the border, ISIS continues to lose territory, with the coalition in January claiming about a 20% reduction. ISIS' enemies are far closer to their "capital" of Raqqa then they were six months ago.

So long as ISIS (or its predecessors, the Islamic State in Iraq and al Qaeda in Iraq) remained in the shadows as a terrorist group, and stuck to its core competencies of liquidation and suicide bombs, it was very difficult to find and root out, subject only to intelligence-driven raids by the commandos of the Joint Special Operations Command (Delta Force and SEAL Team 6, mostly). But ISIS' strategy of creating a political entity on the ground has also made it vulnerable to both airpower and conventional armies, while--as events of the last 24 hours show--it is still subject to JSOC kill/capture operations. So while the implementation of the U.S. strategy has been scandalously slow, it is now clearly demonstrating its effectiveness.

So long as ISIS (or its predecessors, the Islamic State in Iraq and al Qaeda in Iraq) remained in the shadows as a terrorist group, and stuck to its core competencies of liquidation and boom-mobiles, it was very difficult to find and root out. But ISIS' strategy of creating a political entity on the ground has made it vulnerable to both airpower and conventional armies. And while the implementation of the U.S. strategy has been scandalously slow, it is now clearly demonstrating its effectiveness.

Iraqi Army forces are moving to djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, already nearly surrounded on the northern side by Kurdish forces, while the Hashd are clearing the more rural areas west of Samarra/Tikrit and south of Mosul. The liberation of Mosul is no longer in doubt.

An optimistic timeline would have the operation occurring this summer, a pessimistic timeline next spring. But its eventual outcome is as close to certainty as exists. When tens of thousands of troops, supported by U.S. airpower, mass against a few thousand defenders, it is clear how that story ends, militarily.

And we are already seeing ISIS react to this eventuality. Late last month, we saw ISIS return to its terrorist roots and launch suicide bombs into the Sadr City neighborhood of Baghdad. In so doing, ISIS is demonstrating its weakness and regressing from a military force back to a terrorist one.

Afghanistan
Security Report Shows Improvement In ANSF Campaigns
Reflecting on a very busy year so far for the embattled Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) against insurgents, a new TOLOnews security report has found the ANSF maintained their military strength over insurgents during March and April this year, which led to major defeat on a number of instances for insurgents.

"Although the insurgents increased their operations and activities by 77 percent, the Afghan security forces retaliated against attacks effectively - in 200 counter-insurgency attacks," the report says.

The report also covered the overall death toll among the armed opponents and the ANSF.

But according to the report, Afghan forces still do not have the ability to lead large scale operations on several fronts simultaneously.

Based on the report, during March and April, ANSF launched a number of sophisticated operations including Shafaq operation while Taliban also announced their spring offensive, code named Omari.

However, the report speaks of improvement within the ranks of ANSF in their battle against the insurgents, but the Taliban also used all available resources to increase attacks on security forces and gain ground, indicating a substantial rise in Taliban attacks.

"After announcing their spring offensive, Taliban increased their attacks. The group conducted 131 attacks on security forces while the figure was around 50 attacks during the first two months of 2016," the report stated.

"Taliban carried out guerrilla attacks and they tolerated a massive toll during operations and were defeated. If they continue on the same track, they will lose soon," military analyst Mirza Mohammad Yarmand said.

"During March and April, the Taliban tried to change their war tactics and they focused on small operations and widespread attacks. The attacks were totally different from the attacks during this period in 2015," the report further added.

The report found that ANSF was still on the defensive and they have not managed to take the war to the Taliban. While the Shafaq operation is still ongoing, Taliban managed to infiltrate in Baghlan's Dand-e-Ghori and Dand-e-Shahabuddin districts.

"They (Taliban) faced one of the biggest defeats in the past 50 days in Kunduz, they were defeated after attacking Kunduz," Sediq Sediqqi, an interior ministry spokesman said.

"Overall 1,280 security events were recorded in March and April which shows an 18 percent rise compared to first two months of 2016, the report read.

During March and April, the militants launched 181 attacks while the security forces launched 660 retaliatory attacks to foil these attacks.

"We are still undertaking our planned operations which include offensives, we plan and conduct the operation," Dawlat Waziri, a spokesman for the ministry of defense said on Thursday.

Casualties among the armed opponents also increased by 15 percent during March and April 2016 compared to the same period in 2015.

The report finds that 447 Afghan soldiers were killed during March and April while 145 civilians also lost their lives during the violence.

"During March and April the insurgents abducted 94 civilians and 44 military personnel," the report said.

In February, Afghanistan's border regions once again came under cross border attacks from Pakistani army.

The eastern Nangarhar province remained on top of the list of most insecure provinces during March and April.

USAID confirms suspension of aid programs in Turkey over corruption
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has confirmed that it has halted several humanitarian aid activities in Turkey due to information received about fraud in a number of humanitarian aid programs for Syrians.
Someone forgot to make the check payable to the Clinton Foundation?
USAID has also suspended individuals and vendors from receiving USAID funding, its spokesperson, Ben Edwards, said in a statement released on May 11.

“USAID places the highest priority on ensuring that taxpayer funds are used wisely, effectively and for their intended purpose. We have a zero tolerance policy for fraud and abuse of American taxpayer resources and will take every measure at our disposal to recover misspent funds,” Edwards stated.

“USAID is working to reduce the impact of the suspension on Syrians in need of humanitarian aid by identifying alternative options for continuing the affected programs. USAID is continuing to reach people in need, and we remain committed helping Syrians during this humanitarian crisis,” he added.
Where was Hilarity's bag man in all this?
A U.S. government official said the Washington has suspended millions of dollars in funding to 14 entities and individuals involved in aid programs based in Turkey. The decision followed a complex investigation into cross-border aid programs providing humanitarian relief in Syria and running from both Turkey and Jordan by multiple nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) with funds from USAID and other international donors, the Hürriyet Daily News reported on May 10.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Totten: Iran Recruits Child Soldiers -- Again
The Iranian government is broadcasting a music video made by the Basij militia recruiting children to fight in Syria's civil war.
The original is in Persian (Farsi), but the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) translated some of the lyrics.

"On my leader [Ayatollah Khamenei's orders I am ready to give my life.

The goal is not just to free Iraq and Syria;

My path is through the sacred shrine [in Syria], but my goal is to reach Jerusalem.

... I don’t regret parting from my country;

In this just path I am wearing my martyrdom shroud."

Iran's regime has done this before. During the Iran-Iraq War, which killed around a million people between 1980 and 1988, the Basij recruited thousands of children to clear minefields.

After lengthy cult-like brainwashing sessions, the poor kids placed plastic keys around their necks, symbolizing martyrs' permission to enter paradise, and ran ahead of Iranian ground troops and tanks to remove Iraqi mines by detonating them with their feet and blowing their small bodies to pieces.

Children have been fighting in wars as long as there have been wars, but shoving them into the meat grinder in the 21st century is a war crime expressly prohibited and sometimes even punished by all civilized governments. The International Criminal Court in The Hague, for instance, convicted Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga Dyilo of war crimes in 2012 for "conscripting and enlisting children under the age of fifteen years and using them to participate actively in hostilities."

The Basij is a paramilitary branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, or Pasdaran, and it's commanded by the iron-fisted head of state, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. It's mostly used for internal repression and provided many of the shock troops who brutally suppressed non-violent demonstrations during the Green Revolution in 2009.

"Parallel institutions" (nahad-e movazi) is how Iranians refer to the quasi-official organs of repression that have become increasingly open in crushing student protests," writes Human Rights Watch, "detaining activists, writers, and journalists in secret prisons, and threatening pro-democracy speakers and audiences at public events. These groups have carried out brutal assaults against students, writers, and reformist politicians, and have set up arbitrary checkpoints around Tehran. Groups such as Ansar-e Hizbollah and the Basij work under the control of the Office of the Supreme Leader, and there are many reports that the uniformed police are often afraid to directly confront these plainclothes agents. Illegal prisons, which are outside of the oversight of the National Prisons Office, are sites where political prisoners are abused, intimidated, and tortured with impunity."

The Basij is also known, ludicrously I should add, as the Organization for Mobilization of the Oppressed. These people are superpredators. They attack unarmed civilians with knives, motorcycle chains and axes. They rape young women and boys. They have raped and murdered women who don't adhere to strict Islamic dress codes.

the neighborhoods on the South and West sides where most of the killings take place don't trust the cops, or the mayor.

And based on the increased shootings and killings already this year, Chicago is right to fear it will all get much worse.

The mayor is in a tough spot, some of it his own making, but much of it the result of decades of complete dysfunction of institutions, communities and families in the Democratic city that used to work.
It hasn't worked since the end of the '60s when Richard the Elder was mayor. We had a series of hacks and fools follow that man. Ritchie Short-Shanks set up the final fall, and it's occurring on Rahm's watch.
And cops don't trust him to have their backs.

The street gangs pull the triggers at ever increasing rates and mock the police. I hear stories of gangbangers in cars screeching their tires, driving doughnuts on the pavement with squad cars nearby, the riders leering, daring, mocking the cops who sit there.

That kind of thing doesn't make the news. But neighborhoods have eyes. The people see. They know what it means. The thugs are fearless now. The polls show that those who live in Chicago's war zones beg for the shootings to stop. But they don't want cops coming in rough.

Black Chicago doesn't trust the mayor, not since he suppressed that video of Laquan McDonald, the black teenager shot 16 times by Jason Van Dyke, a white police officer.

Afghanistan
Ghani: No apology needed from Cameron for describing Afghanistan ‘fantastically corrupt’
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
has said he does not want an apology from the British Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
for describing Afghanistan as ’fantastically corrupt’.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Ghanis said Afghanistan was "one of the most corrupt countries on earth".

"He was describing the legacy of the past, a legacy in which many actors, many factors combined to produce one of the most corrupt countries on earth," Ghani said.

President Ghani further added "The first part of addressing the problem begins with acknowledgement and we are partners in an effort to overcome this cancer. What distinguishes my government is our clarity about what we’ve inherited, our determination to address it, our willingness to form the right partnerships."

He also added that the west had a duty to help as "the most significant driver of corruption is the narcotic cartel", driving both terrorism, extremism and corruption.

Cameron risked derailing the gathering earlier this week when he was filmed boasting to the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury that he had some ’fantastically corrupt’ countries attending.

He singled out Nigeria and Afghanistan during the unguarded conversation at Buckingham Palace, according to the local newspaper, MailOnline.

Boko Haram bomber kills self, policemen at Borno Government House
[DAILYPOST.NG] The Nigerian Army on Thursday announced that a combined team of coppers maintaining security duties at the entrance of Borno State Government Secretariat, in Maiduguri, intercepted and prevented a male Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
jacket wallah from entering the place to attack workers.

Colonel Sani Usman, Director Army Public Relations, in a statement said in the process of stopping the terrorist, he detonated the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on his body, killing himself, a policeman and critically injured another policeman who prevented him from gaining entry into the Secretariat Complex.

He stated that the injured policeman died later, adding that 18 people that sustained various degrees of injuries have since been evacuated to hospital for treatment.

"Troops have cordoned off the area and evacuated all workers from the Secretariat and reinforced security.

"In addition, the Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) and K9 teams have been mobilized to the Secretariat for screening until it is declared safe.

"This unfortunate incident has reinforced the need for more security consciousness and awareness on the part of all of us as the remnants of the Boko Haram gunnies and their sympathizers still mingle with the society.

"It, therefore, behoves on all and sundry to ensure that they are detected and prevented from carrying out their dastardly acts," the statement concluded.
Ynet adds that Boko Haram has a new tactic:
A jacket wallah pretending to be a madman went kaboom! Thursday and killed at least five people outside government offices in Nigeria's northeastern city of Maiduguri, witnesses said.

Another six people were maimed, the witnesses said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
for their safety. Many more could have died but guards prevented the seemingly demented man from entering the complex, they said.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Thousands of Arab Israelis march for Palestinian ‘return’ to Israel
[IsraelTimes] Rally for first time in the Negev, protesters in Rahat, including Arab Knesset members, swear to defend land and uphold Paleostinian rights

Thousands of Arab Israeli protesters marched in favor of a "right of return" for millions of Paleostinians on Thursday, as Israel celebrated its 68th Independence Day.
Some of Israel's political parties are in favour of trading Arab-Israeli villages to the PA for Jewish West Bank settlements as part of peace negotiations. Instead of offering, they could insist...
Some of the protesters, many of whom consider themselves Paleostinian citizens of Israel, carried Paleostinian flags and others held up signs demanding the right to return for refugees and their descendants at the rally in the Negev desert.

As mainly Jewish Israelis marked Independence Day, the marchers carried the slogan "On the anniversary of your independence, remember our Nakba." The term Nakba is widely used by Paleostinians and in the Arab world to describe the "catastrophe" of modern Israel’s establishment in 1948.

The protest included a swearing-in ceremony where people collectively swore to defend the land, and to uphold the claim by Paleostinians who used to live in what is today Israel, and their descendants, of a right to come back and live in the country.

The protesters, among them members of the Joint (Arab) List Knesset faction, also poured seeds into the ground in a symbolic gesture.

Joint List leader Ayman Odeh said in a speech to the crowd: "The Nakba is not a question of the past but of the future. Recognition of the Nakba, of this great crime, and gestures to correct this wrong, are the only way toward true reconciliation between the two peoples [Israelis and Paleostinians]."

Organizers said it was the first time such a demonstration has been held in the Negev.

The Paleostinians refer to the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, following the defeat of Arab nations in the War of Independence, as the "Nabka," the Arabic word for "catastrophe." Nakba day will be formerly marked on May 15.

For Paleostinians, the right to return to homes they fled or were forced out of in 1948 is a prerequisite for any peace agreement. However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
has informally acknowledged that he does not expect Israel to absorb millions of Paleostinians since this would fundamentally alter the 78-22 Jewish-non-Jewish population balance in Israel.

Israeli governments of left and right reject the notion of a "right of return" for Paleostinians, arguing that a mass influx of Paleostinians would spell the end of the Jewish state. Israel has called for Paleostinian refugees to be absorbed into a future Paleostinian state, just as Israel took in hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees from Arab states in the Middle East and North Africa.

Israel also rejects the UN designation of second, third and subsequent generations of descendants of Paleostinians who used to live in what is now Israel as "refugees," noting that only Paleostinian descendants of refugees are treated in this way by the UN.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Jewish-Muslim couple’s California cafe to fight Islamophobia suit
The soft jihad of the law.
[IsraelTimes] Women claim they were asked to leave because they wore headscarves; owners say the group violated their time-limit policy
And how is the smart money betting?
A Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, cafe founded and owned by a Jewish and Muslim husband and wife plans to counter-sue after being accused of discriminating against Muslim patrons.

Urth Caffe, an artisanal coffee shop and restaurant with six Southern California locations, was accused in a suit filed May 2 of forcing seven women to leave its Laguna Beach site in April because they were visibly Muslim.

Announcing plans for a counter-suit last week, attorneys for owners Shallom and Jilla Berkman, who are Jewish and Muslim, respectively, say the lawsuit is "a fraud and a hoax on the courts and the media," ABC7.com reported.

The cafe has said the women were asked to leave because they violated its policy of giving up a table after 45 minutes during busy periods, while others were waiting in line. The women, six of whom wear Muslim headscarves, assert that the restaurant was not full and that no other customers were asked to leave.

In a Facebook post that went viral, one of the plaintiffs, Sara Farsakh, wrote, "What began as a night out with some friends ended as a painful and embarrassing reminder of what it is like to be visibly Muslim -- even in liberal California."

The Berkmans have engaged a pro bono attorney, David Yerushalmi, a conservative activist known for fighting the influence of religious Islamic law, according to the Jewish Journal.

Calling Yerushalmi "probably the leading anti-Muslim activist this side of Donald Trump," the attorney for the Muslim women has claimed that the Berkmans’ decision to hire him supports allegations that their company engaged in anti-Muslim profiling.

However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
Shallom Berkman told the Jewish Journal in an email that he and his wife "don’t consider [Yerushalmi] anti-Muslim -- we believe him to be pro-justice."

Yerushalmi told the Journal he plans to demonstrate that the lawsuit is part of a broader effort to put forward a Muslim "victimization narrative."

In a letter posted at the Laguna Beach location, Shallom Berkman wrote on behalf of him and his wife, according to the Journal: "We find this incident both sad and frustrating in that they chose one of the most welcoming and diverse businesses in the area to target with their political agenda. These accusations are absolutely false and we remain confident that when the whole truth is known, we will be completely vindicated."

Nigeria: Troops Intercept Another Boko Haram Suicide Bomber
[ALLAFRICA] The Nigerian army says troops from its 7 Division Garrison, on Wednesday interceptedaBoko Haram terrorist from detonating a suicide bomb in Sulaimanti community, in the outskirts of Maiduguri, Borno State.

A statement by the acting Director Army Public Relations, Sani Usman, said the terrorist, armed with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), attempted to attack worshippers at the Sulaimanti mosque during early morning prayers, but was prevented from gaining access to the mosque.

The army said five civilians sustained injuries when some of the IED exploded, and that a team of Explosive Ordinance Device was quickly drafted in to defuse the remaining ones.

The injured have been evacuated to the hospital, while the troops and security agents have intensified patrol within the area, the army said.

The army attributed the successful interception of the suicide bomber to the collaboration between the military and the Civilian JTF.

The acting General Officer Commanding, 7 Division, Victor Ezugwu, was said to have visited the community shortly after the incident.

Europe
Over 100 arrested on terror charges in France this year
[IsraelTimes] Exactly six months after Gay Paree terror rampage, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve says ’threat level is still very high’
A good thing they're telling us -- how else would we know?
La Belle France has enjugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
101 people since the start of the year over "direct links to terrorism," Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said in an interview to be published Friday, exactly six months after the Gay Paree attacks.

"We are doing everything we can to protect the people of La Belle France, but the threat level is still very high," Cazeneuve told the Ebra media group, which publishes several dailies.

Since 2013, 15 planned attacks have been foiled, he added.

"At the European level, thanks in great measure to La Belle France’s impetus, progress is being made," he said.

"Aside from the closely coordinated police and judicial French-Belgian efforts that helped us carry out the recent arrests, the European Parliament has finally adopted the PNR (Passenger Name Record) system which will enhance our detection capabilities of jihadists’ movements," he said.

The European Parliament voted last month to adopt the US-style measure to force airlines to share passenger data with EU states.

Cazeneuve said that border checks had been carried out on 33 million people at La Belle France’s frontiers in the past six months, and that 17,500 people had been refused entry to the country.

Asked about plans to provide security for major events to be held in La Belle France in the coming months, Cazeneuve said that "exceptional" measures would be put in place, "in order to ensure the highest possible security.

"That’s one of the reasons why we extended the state of emergency until July 26, that is after the end of the football Euro 2016 championship and the (cycling) Tour de La Belle France."

Prime Minister Manuel Valls on Monday announced plans to create regional de-radicalization centers, in response to last year’s terror attacks that killed a total of 147 people.

One hundred and thirty people were murdered in the November 13 attacks in Gay Paree, after 17 died in January in three days of violence starting with a massacre at the offices of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
and including a hostage-taking by an Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
-inspired gunman at Gay Paree’s Hyper Cacher kosher market.

The government believes nearly 9,300 people in La Belle France have been radicalized and are capable of violent actions.

The anti-terror plan will cost an additional 40 million euros ($45.5 million) by 2018 on top of current funding and aims to ramp up existing efforts to try to help people already in jihadist networks or those likely to join such groups.

Italian coastguard rescues 801 boat migrants, many from Syria
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Italia's coastguard said it helped rescue 801 migrants colonists from two boats off western Sicily on Thursday, including many Syrians, amid signs that refugees from the Middle East are increasingly shunning the Greek route into Europe.

More than a million migrants colonists, many from Syria, have entered Europe via The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Greece in the past year but the number has fallen sharply since March, when Ankara agreed with the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
to take back refugees landing on the Greek islands.

The United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
refugee agency (UNHCR) said the two boats aided on Thursday, which were also carrying some Iraqis, represented the largest such attempted mass migration from Syria and Iraq to Italia for at least a year.

An Italian coastguard statement said 515 people had been plucked from one boat and a further 286 people rescued in another operation involving a Finnish naval vessel.

A coastguard front man said most of those taken to safety in the first operation were Syrian, while he was unable to give the nationalities of those saved from the second boat.

Another coastguard front man had previously said the second operation had rescued around 380 people.

UNHCR spokeswoman Carlotta Sami said the Syrians and Iraqis had set sail from Egypt rather than Libya, the launchpad for most migrants colonists heading to Italia.

The UNHCR says more migrants colonists looking to reach Europe arrived in Italia in April than in Greece - 9,149 against 3,650 - the first time that had happened since May 2015.

As of May 10, 31,250 migrants colonists had reached Italia by boat this year, a 14 percent decline from the same period last year, according to the Interior Ministry.

The vast majority came from African countries, led by Nigeria, Gambia
... The Gambia is actually surrounded by Senegal on all sides but its west coast. It has a population of about 1.7 million. The difference between the two is that in colonial days Senegal was ruled by La Belle France and The Gambia (so-called because there's only one of it, unlike Guinea, of which there are the Republic of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, New Guinea, the English coin in circulation between 1663 and 1813, and Guyana, which sounds like it should be another one) was ruled by Britain...
, Somalia and the African Coast.

In addition to the European Union's repatriation deal with Turkey, Balkan nations, Hungary and Austria have tightened border controls in an attempt to deter the migrants colonists entering from Greece. Most who take the Balkan route head to Germany.

QAMISHLO – There are increasing tensions between Baghdad and Washington over the role of Shia militias, US analysts suggest. In the last operation for the Shia Turkmen village of al-Bashir in the beginning of May, the US only supported Peshmerga forces.

“The Peshmerga with the assistance of coalition airstrikes seized Bashir from ISIL [ISIS] in an operation that lasted less than 24 hours. Bashir was an important support zone for this enemy,” said Colonel Steve Warren, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman.

The statement of US coalition official angered local Turkmen Shia Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) that have failed over nearly two years to take the village of Bashir without Peshmerga support, and claimed that the PMU played the main role in the operation.

The local Turkmen PMU units failed to advance in Bashir, lacking US coalition support.

However, Col. Christopher Garver, CJTF-OIR Public Affairs Officer, in an exclusive statement to ARA News, said the Kurds played the main role in liberating al-Bashir from ISIS, although the PMU assisted.

“The Peshmerga, with the assistance of coalition airstrikes, liberated Bashir. Popular Mobilization forces were in the region in a supporting role, but the Peshmerga conducted the operation,” the top coalition’s official told ARA News.

US analysts suggest there are tensions between the U.S. and Baghdad over the role of the PMU units, also known as Hashd Sha’abi in Arabic.

Speaking to ARA News, Nicholas Heras, a Washington-based Middle East researcher at the Centre for a New American Security, said there are growing concerns in Washington over the PMU.

“There is very real and growing tension between the U.S. and Baghdad on the proper role of the Hashd Sha’abi,” Heras said.

“The U.S. is being bluntly told by Iraqi Sunnis who are willing to work with the anti-ISIS Coalition that the involvement of the Hashd Sha’abi in seizing ISIS areas is a non-starter. The United States’ Iraqi Sunni partners will not back any effort that involves the Hashd Sha’abi, even in a token role,” he added.

#1  Background:

As the Shiite government in Baghdad struggled to fight the Sunni extremist group ISIS, many Shiite Iraqis looked to Iran, a Shiite theocracy, as their main ally. More Iraqi Shiites came to trust the powerful Iranian-backed militias that had taken charge since the Iraqi army deserted en masse in the summer of 2014. Dozens of paramilitary groups were united under a secretive branch of the Iraqi government called the Popular Mobilization Committee, or Hashd Shaabi.

Under Iranian guidance, Iraq’s Shiite militias are evolving into a permanent force resembling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. That sectarian force would operate in tandem with Iraq’s regular military. Some Popular Mobilization Forces are reportedly better equipped than the Iraqi army [IA], which likely has a detrimental effect on recruitment and retention in the IA.

Eight wounded in Istanbul bomb attack near military post
Eight people were injured when a bomb-laden car was detonated near a military post in the Sancaktepe district of Istanbul on the afternoon of May 12, Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin has stated. Şahin said five soldiers and three civilians were slightly injured in the blast.

The governor said the explosion inside the parked car occurred at around 4.45 p.m., after a shuttle bus carrying military personnel departed from the İsmail Hakkı Tunaboyu military post. He added that one of the injured civilians is in a critical condition while the others are all receiving treatment.

A number of buildings and shops near the military post were damaged due to the explosion. The front of the shuttle bus was also damaged due to scattered pieces from the bomb-laden car.

Military sources say they are discussing the possibility that the car was detonated earlier than expected, as the military shuttle was about 25 meters away at the moment of explosion.

The attack targeted military personnel departing from the İsmail Hakkı Tunaboyu Army Aviation Regiment military post, according to the Doğan News Agency.
