Gander Mountain preparing bankruptcy filing
[TwinCities Pioneer Press] Reuters is reporting that St. Paul-based hunting and fishing chain Gander Mountain is preparing to file for bankruptcy as early as this month, after an aggressive effort to expand its store base failed to pull in new customers, according to people familiar with the matter.

Gander Mountain is working with financial advisory firm Lighthouse Management Group and Minneapolis law firm Fredrikson & Byron as it gets ready to file for bankruptcy, the people told Reuters this week.

The sources asked not to be identified because the matter is confidential. Gander Mountain and Lighthouse Management declined to comment this week, while a spokeswoman for Fredrikson did not return a request for comment made on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Gander Mountain, which bills itself as America’s firearms superstore, has faced challenges capitalizing on a booming gun market. The Federal Bureau of Investigation carried out a record 27.5 million background checks on people seeking to buy guns in 2016, up 19 percent from the year before.

#3  Gander Mountain, which bills itself as America's firearms superstore...

Not surprising they may go Tango Uniform. Their marketing model for gun sales suck. Given the volume of Gander Mountain's inventory they could compete with anybody. Yet their gun prices are on average 20% higher than many of the online gun retailers. Their outlets will only price-match the bricks and mortar vendors in their respective regions. The 'we gotta pay to keep the lights on' excuse works for Local Gun Shops but falls flat for larger retailers with other product lines. That's why, given the choice, many gun buyers will choose their LGS over chain retailers.

#4  The original Gander Mountain based in Wilmont

Their main storefront and 'discount' buildings used to be a great places to go when in that part of the world....but that was 25-30 years ago. By the mid-90s they started to open up the regional stores and the Wilmot locations went downhill fast.

Trump aide Conway draws ire for kneeling on White House sofa
[Mail] US President Donald Trump's senior adviser Kellyanne Conway has come under fire after a picture of her casually kneeling on a couch in the Oval Office was widely shared on social media.

In an image captured by an AFP photographer, Conway appears on the couch with her shoes on as Trump poses for a photo with leaders of historically black colleges and universities.

Wall Street Journal columnist Bret Stephens was among those taking aim at Conway, suggesting that aides under previous administrations would have elicited even greater outcry.

"If Rice or Jarrett had sat like this in Oval Office, conservatives would have screamed themselves hoarse for weeks. Now we own trashy," he wrote, referring to previous presidential aides.

Deportation agency ignored 1.6 million visa overstays under Obama
[Wash Times] The government flagged more than 1.6 million foreign visitors for overstaying their visas from 2013 to 2015, but deportation agents said they fell too low on President Obama’s list of priorities to bother targeting for removal, according to a watchdog report released Monday.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the deportation agency, concluded that it would cost too much to pursue the overstays, the Government Accountability Office said. ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations branch instead chose to focus on illegal immigrants who jumped the border and who amassed serious criminal records -- the priorities Mr. Obama laid out.

Overstays pose an increasingly prominent problem in illegal immigration, with estimates saying that as the border has become more secure, migrants are attempting to enter by getting legal passes and refusing to leave when their time is up.

Some estimates say more than 40 percent of illegal immigrants each year arrived legally but overstayed.
While new border crossers were a priority for the Obama administration, overstays were not.

#1  Charge those who overstay a fee of at least several thousands to pay for the cost of tracking them down and deporting them. Make them pay before they're released from jail. Jail charge included in said fee, so the longer they stay, the more it cost them.

#2  Create an exit fee for each international entry point, payable to the local jurisdiction, linked to their declared departure date. When they fail to pay at time of departure, it creates after processing through local courts a failure to appear warrant that can be linked to NCIC. Warrants can be made enforceable nationwide and are legal for apprehensions by every law enforcement officer in the country. Poof, 700,000 cops added to immigration enforcement. Ends the canard of immigration enforcement being a federal responsibility only.

POTUS Wants To Cut EPA's Budget By $2 Billion, Cut 3,000 Staff
[Daily Caller] President Donald Trump will ask Congress to cut the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) budget 24 percent, or nearly $2 billion, according to sources familiar with the budget plans.

The White House sent draft budget plans to agency heads Monday, detailing billions of dollars in cuts to a wide range of federal programs. Cuts to EPA and other agencies will fund a $54 billion increase in defense spending.

A source informed of the budget plans told E&E News Trump will push for a nearly $2 billion cut to EPA’s $8.1 billion budget. A source told Politico Trump also "proposed reducing EPA’s 15,000-strong workforce to 12,000, a level not seen since the mid-1980s."

"You’re going to have to make reductions," Myron Ebell, director of global warming and energy policy at the libertarian Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

They somehow lost their focus, and now instead of preparing (rightly) to deal with whatever REAL "disease" might threaten the health of this country, the CDC now spends far too much time and money imagining that THEY are the NAGS that should lecture us on salt consumption, guns, etc.

"Mission creep" is a serious problem found in virtually every government agency.

Cornel West Lacks 'Faith' in 'Progressive Vision' of Black Caucus
[PJ] WASHINGTON ‐ Political activist Dr. Cornel West said he does not have a "tremendous amount of faith" in the "progressive vision" of the Congressional Black Caucus, telling PJM that he believes the group of lawmakers is on the wrong side of several issues.

West called for a "multi-racial coalition" that can work to "transform" America’s "capitalist civilization into a more democratic socialist one." He also said there should be a "more serious conversation" in the U.S. about reparations for descendants of African-American slaves.

In response to a question at a recent press conference, President Trump said he was open to meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus and the two parties are reportedly going to meet soon. When asked if he would like to see Trump and the CBC meet, West described the group as "neo-liberal."
"They’re too friendly to Wall Street. Too many of the campaigns come out of the Wall Street entities and therefore they are not free enough to really speak to the issue of poverty.

They haven’t made poverty a major priority, and that’s the legacy of Martin King and the others," he told PJM following a news conference with Hashim Nzinga, chairman of the New Black Panther Party, and Malik Zulu Shabazz, national president of Black Lawyers for Justice, at the National Press Club on Wednesday.

#1  He also said there should be a "more serious conversation" in the U.S. about reparations for descendants of African-American slaves.

How many deaths were caused by the Civil War?

Union Enlistment 2,893,304 Confederate Enlistment 1,317,035 Battle Deaths 110,070 Battle Deaths 94,000 Disease Deaths 224,586 Disease Deaths 164,000 Other Causes 24,872 Other Causes No record given Total Deaths 359,528 Total Deaths 258,000 Percentage Deaths 12.4% Percentage Deaths 19.6%

If one makes an assumption that the Union soldiers were fighting on the side of emancipation; Although that may not be an accurate assumption since people go to war for many reasons, but let's assume it is true for now. It seems the debt was more than settled long ago. Leave it alone and put it to rest. Is that a serious enough conversation?

Xenophobic Violence Against Migrants Returns to South Africa
[GenerationalDynamics.com] Police in Pretoria, one of South Africa's three capital cities, used rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades on Friday to break up clashes between local anti-immigrant protesters and migrants living and working in the area. Police arrested 136 people, many of them protesters and looters armed with clubs, sticks, pipes and rocks. In retaliation, migrants armed themselves with sticks and clubs too. The migrants are from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Pakistan and other countries.

Earlier this week, migrants were targeted in the suburbs of Pretoria and Johannesburg, where shops and businesses were burned or destroyed.

Officials fear a repeat of massive xenophobic violence that occurred in 2008, when at least 60 people were killed. Atrocities including dragging migrants through the streets and burning them alive. In 2015, xenophobic violence resulted in six deaths in Durban.

As one of the wealthiest countries in Africa, South Africa draws migrants from poor countries who come to work or to escape violence. Nonetheless, the unemployment rate is over 25%, and migrants are blamed for taking jobs. Xenophobic violence frequently targets small shops and businesses run by migrants, claiming that they're drug dens and brothels.

It would be blikskottel (naughty) to say I told you so, and crank up the Weber.

Guess who picks up the tab for the $1m Dakota Pipeline protest clean-up ?
[Breitbart] The U.S. Army Corps will spend more than $1 million to clean up the mess left behind by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and others opposed to the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota. The protesters -- who succeeded in temporarily shutting down pipeline construction under orders from President Barack Obama -- were evicted after President Donald Trump put the pipeline project back online.
"The corps’ contract with a Florida-based company to provide trash removal and environmental cleanup includes the main Oceti Sakowin camp on the north side of the Cannonball River and the smaller Rosebud camp on the south side," the Bismarck Tribune reported on Friday. "Both are on corps’-owned property."

Despite efforts by the tribe to clean up the protest sites, the land was littered with garbage, and even cars and motor homes had to be removed.

German secret service spied on journalists at the BBC, The New York Times and Reuters for more than a Decade
h/t Instapundit
Germany's foreign intelligence service BND long spied on journalists of the BBC, The New York Times, Reuters and other media, news weekly Der Spiegel reported Friday.
Media rights group Reporters Without Borders labelled the alleged surveillance 'a monstrous attack on press freedom', voiced fears the eavesdropping was ongoing and said it was planning legal action, according to Der Spiegel.
The magazine, which has extensively worked with US fugitive intelligence contractor Edward Snowden and reported on US and German espionage scandals, only cited documents it had seen.

Egypt's army says six militants killed in latest North Sinai raids
[AlAhram] Egypt's army said in a statement on Monday it has killed six bully boyz during the most recent several raids against terrorists' hideouts in North Sinai.

The army's announcement comes a few days after a number of Coptic families fled the governorate following a spate of killings of Christians by Islamist Lion of Islams.

...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
says a prosecutor has launched an investigation into the possible existence of a clique within the military capable of "obstructing" the government.

The Anadolu Agency says the prosecutor in Istanbul started the probe Monday following a weekend report in the Hurriyet newspaper that suggested some within army headquarters were "disturbed" by a series of steps taken by the military, including a decision to allow female officers to wear headscarves while on duty.
By the time they're done rooting out all possible opposition, there won't be anyone in uniform capable of fighting.
It said the probe was launched in response to an official complaint filed by a university lecturer, who said the report demonstrated the presence of an "influential and active junta."

China Warns US, S. Korea of ‘Consequences’ over THAAD Land Swap Deal
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] China announced that Washington and Seoul will face "consequences" over a land swap deal which will allow the US to host its THAAD missile defense system on South Korean soil ‐ a move which Beijing claims will undermine its own ballistic capabilities.

The agreement, which involves a land swap between Seoul and retail giant Lotte, was approved on Monday.

"We received a message that the board approved the exchange of land for THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) deployment," the South Korean Defense Ministry said in a statement, as quoted by AFP.

That news was met with disapproval from China’s Foreign Ministry, with front man Geng Shuang claiming the system "severely disrupts regional strategic balance and jeopardizes the strategic security interests of regional countries including China."

Beijing "will definitely take necessary measures to safeguard its security interests," he said during a news briefing, adding that "all the consequences entailed will be borne by the US and the Republic of Korea."

Trump-Style Australian Populists Gain in Polls as Turnbull Flounders
[BLOOMBERG] Anti-immigrant populists and the opposition Labor party advanced in opinion polls as Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s government descended into infighting.

One-in-10 people surveyed by Newspoll backed Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party, more than double its support base late last year, amid her attacks on Moslem immigration, free trade and foreign investment in Australia.

Labor climbed 1 percentage point to 37 percent, while the incumbent Liberal-National coalition fell 1 point to 34 percent, according to the survey published by the Australian newspaper Monday. The poll showed that, on a two-party preferred basis, Labor would trounce the government 55 percent to 45 percent in an election.

Turnbull is being undermined by his hard-line conservative predecessor Tony Abbott, seven months after scraping an election victory with a razor-thin majority. Abbott last week conducted a media blitz calling on Turnbull to slash immigration, scrap a renewable energy target to lower electricity prices, abolish the Human Rights Commission, reform the upper house of parliament and cut government spending to undercut One Nation’s supporter base.

Turnbull said the "outburst" was "sad" and wouldn’t distract him from governing; Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, once a loyal Abbott supporter, described the comments as "deliberately destructive" to his colleagues.

Yes, Le Pen could win in France
[YAHOO] With the polls narrowing and one of her main rivals embroiled in an expenses scandal, far-right leader Marine Le Pen could feasibly become French president in May, senior politicians and commentators say.

Even some of her rivals concede a victory for the far-right firebrand
...firebrands are noted more for audio volume and the quantity of spittle generated than for any actual logic in their arguments...
is possible.

"I think Madame Le Pen could be elected," former conservative prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin said this month.

Another former premier, the Socialist Manuel Valls, has also warned of the "danger" of assuming that Le Pen cannot win.

Polls show that support for the 48-year-old anti-immigrant and anti-EU candidate has been consistent for four years now.

Since 2013, surveys have shown she will progress through the first round to reach the runoff stage in La Belle France's two-stage presidential election.

Pollsters now note that although Le Pen is not currently forecast to win the all-important showdown on May 7, she has whittled down the projected gap between herself and her main challengers.

Baghdad blasts leave four Iraqis dead
[AA.TR] Four non-combatants were killed in two separate attacks in Iraqi capital Baghdad on Monday, according to a local police officer.

A bomb went kaboom! under a civilian car, killing a man and his wife in southern Baghdad, police captain Nazhan al-Khedr told Anadolu Agency.

He said two other people were maimed and seven others injured in a bomb kaboom near a marketplace in al-Madaen, south of Baghdad.

No group has yet grabbed credit for the attacks.

In recent months, devastating bombings -- often featuring explosive-laden vehicles -- have become commonplace in Iraq’s violence-prone capital.

Afghanistan
Pak ambassador summoned for third time as shelling kill 4 Afghan children
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Afghanistan summoned the Pak ambassador for third time in less than two weeks as persistent artillery shelling left at least four children dead in eastern Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan (MoFA) in a statement said Ambassador Syed Abrar Hussain was summoned this afternoon to lodge a protest regarding the shelling on Khas Kunar, the Dara-e-Shali, Sarkano, Dara-e-Noli, Shadi Khel, and Dara-e-Shongri areas of Kunar.

The statement further added that four childre bit the dust in the shelling and the Mighty Pak Army helicopters breached the Afghan airspace by hovering over certain areas in Khas Kunar district.

The head of the first political secretariat Musa Arefi lodged a protest with the Pak ambassador and asked him to forward strong protest of the Afghan authorities to relevant Pak authorities.

This comes as the Pak Ambassador to Afghanistan was summoned in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan on Sunday regarding the persistent artillery shelling in eastern provinces of Afghanistan.

Local officials in Kunar said Sunday that the artillery shelling resumed late on Saturday days after it was halted.

The officials further added that the shelling did not resulted into casualties of the local residents but hundreds of people were forced to flee their homes.

Taliban confirms death of key leader Mullah Abdul Salam in Kunduz
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Talibs group formally confirmed the death of its key leader Mullah Abdul Salam in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan.

The group in a statement said Mullah Abdul Salam has been killed, insisting that the group’s activities will not be affected with his loss.

The statement further added that Mullah Salam’s main dream was to seize control of Kunduz and vowed that hundreds of more youths will follow his steps.

A front man for Afghan National Police’s 808th Spinzar Zone in northeastern parts of the country, Mahfoozullah Akbari, earlier confirmed the death of Mullah Abdul Salam and the other holy warriors.

He said another senior Taliban leader Qari Amin who was appointed as district chief by the group was also among those killed.

The officials are saying that Mullah Abdul Salam had a key role in the collapse of Kunduz city besides he plotted numerous other attacks in this province.

Kunduz is among the relatively volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan where the Taliban Death Eaters are actively operating in a number of its remote districts.

Taliban launched numerous attacks on Kunduz city since they announced their spring offensive earlier last year.

The group also managed to briefly take partial control of the strategic Kunduz city but the bully boyz were pushed back after the Afghan cops launched an offensive with the support of the US forces based in Afghanistan.

There are conflicting reports regarding the circumstances surrounding his death as some officials are saying Mullah Salam was killed in a US Arclight airstrike while others are saying he was killed in a special military operation conducted by the Afghan forces.

province of Afghanistan.

According to the local security officials, the hard boyz were killed on Saturday and Sunday in the vicinity of Achin district.

The officials further added that the Arclight airstrikes were conducted in Dap and Momand areas of Achin district.

No further details were given regarding the Arclight airstrike and it is yet not clear if the raids were conducted by the Afghan forces or the US forces based in Afghanistan.

In the meantime, the officials said the hard boyz killed during the Arclight airstrikes are all foreigners.

Nangarhar is among the relatively calm provinces in eastern Afghanistan but the anti-government armed Lion of Islam groups are attempting to expand their foothold in this province, including the loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

The attempts by Lion of Islam groups forced the Afghan forces to launch a major operation, Shaheen-25 operations, to suppress their activities.

IDF attacks in Gaza in response to rocket fire
More on this report from yesterday.
[Ynet] Israel Air Force fighter jets attacked five Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, terror targets the Gazoo Strip on Monday afternoon in response to a rocket fired from the strip that went kaboom! in open area in the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council in the early morning hours.

According to sources in Gazoo, meanwhile, the IDF attacked 15 targets across the Gazoo Strip--including a military post near the Nuseirat Camp in the center of the strip--with four Hamas maimed in eastern Rafah.

The Gazoo Interior Ministry called on civilians to stay away from the sites that were bombed.

The rocket fired early in the morning did not activate the Code Red siren. There were no injuries and no damage caused as a result of the rocket.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the rocket attack, but the IDF said that it holds Hamas accountable for what happens in the territory.

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Israel had "no desire or intention to initiate any military move in the Gazoo Strip" but that it would not tolerate even a "drizzle" of rocket fire.

"We will not get into a ping-pong situation of fire and counter-fire. I suggest Hamas take responsibility, impose order and calm down," Lieberman said.

Monday's rocket marks the fourth time rockets were fired at Israel in the last month.

He declined to provide more information about the range of the newly-manufactured cruise missile.

The final stage of naval drills codenamed ’Velayat 95’ started by Iranian navy forces in the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman and North of the Indian Ocean on Sunday.

Different naval units, including submarines, missile-launching destroyers, surface and subsurface units, missile and electronic warfare systems, drones, fighter jets and marines, started the Velayat 95 wargames on February 13. The naval drills will continue until March 1.

Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari announced earlier this month that Tehran is resolved to boost its deterrence power and has never planned aggression against any other country.

"Our strategy and doctrine is enhancement of defense power based on deterrence and we are not and will not at all think about aggression against others" but if a country thinks of aggression against Iran, it will receive such a response that will make it regret its deeds, Rear Admiral Sayyari said, addressing a gathering of Navy commanders in Tehran.

Describing establishment of security in the region as the result of Iran’s defense power, he underlined his country’s determination to increase its defense and deterrence power.

Somalia requests Saudi to intervene UAE’s military base in Berbera
Somali President Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo requested from Saudi Arabia to intervene the United Arab Emirates’s plan to establish a military base in “Somaliland”. The Riyadh Post, quoting an official in the Somali government President Farmajo asked officials Saudis convince the UAE not to proceed with its plan to establish a military base in Berbera, Somaliland, which is not recognized by Mogadishu.
Given that Mogadishu doesn't even control Mogadishu...
The Somali president had visited Saudi Arabia last Thursday in his first foreign visit since he was elected president of Somalia, where King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, met in the capital, Riyadh, where the leaders of the two countries discussed bilateral cooperation and the latest developments in the region.

The report notes that Farmajo discussed the issue of al-Qaeda-linked Al shabaab in a meeting with Saudi’s Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz, attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Adel al-Jubeir and other senior Saudi officials.
Did Farmajo bow and scrape properly?
Somali president seeks to take advantage of the close ties between Saudi Arabia and the strategic UAE ally, the UAE to convince not to proceed with the establishment of a UAE military base in Berbera.

Counterfeit Pope?
Unnerved by the proliferation of papal-themed T-shirts, snow globes and tea towels around the world, the Vatican has warned it intends to "protect" the image of Pope Francis and "stop situations of illegality that may be discovered." It also wants to protect the crossed keys emblem of the Holy See.

"The secretary of state will undertake systematic surveillance aimed at monitoring the way in which the image of the Holy Father and the emblems of the Holy See are used, intervening with opportune measures when necessary," the Vatican said in a statement.

To back up this declaration, the Vatican has hired the global law firm Baker McKenzie to protect its intellectual property rights, the Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported. without citing the source of the information. Baker McKenzie declined to comment.

The threat of enforcement marks a sea change for a church that for some 2,000 years has seen popes venerated on all manner of flags, banners and medals. But the popularity of Francis and the ease with which his image can be copied in the internet age has spawned a flood of papal trinkets, causing the Holy See to worry that they are losing control of his image.

"The pope's image rights are no different from those of any other famous celebrity and so it's not surprising that the Vatican is giving notice that it will protect its (intellectual property) rights as necessary," said Nick Kounoupias, the founder of an intellectual property consultancy in London. "What will be interesting to see, however, is how vigorously these rights are pursued, given who the IP owner is."

Europe
Turkey’s Erdogan ‘Not Welcome’ to Campaign in Austria
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
is "not welcome" to hold campaign events in Austria ahead of April’s referendum on strengthening his powers, the foreign minister in Vienna said Monday.

Sebastian Kurz said that Erdogan campaigning over the controversial referendum would "increase friction" in Austria and "hinder the integration" of the country’s 360,000-strong Turkish origin minority, which includes 117,000 Turkish citizens.

"Campaign events are not welcome. Of course the Turkish president, like other senior politicians, can make bilateral visits to Europe and Austria for talks with brass hats," said Kurz.

"But we clearly reject bringing the Turkish campaign and polarisation to Austria," Kurz was quoted as saying in a foreign ministry statement.

The ministry said Erdogan’s previous visits to Austria and also Germany had created "tensions" between his supporters and Turks of Kurdish origin, which have increased since July’s attempted coup.

[Iraq News] Iraqi government forces regained control Monday over another district in western djinn-infested Mosul

"The Federal Police’s Rapid Response forces have liberated the Josaq district, and have also taken control over the fourth bridge from the western side," head of the Joint Operations Command’s operations in Nineveh, Lt. Gen. Abdul-Amir Yarallah, said in a statement.

Yarallah was referring to one of the five bridges linking eastern and western Mosul above the Tigris River. The bridges were partially destroyed by U.S.-led coalition Arclight airstrikes during operations in eastern Mosul to hinder attempts by Islamic State

Also on Monday, a local source told Alsumaria News that the Islamic State’s designated "emir" of Dawasah district in central Mosul was killed along with three companions as they exchanged fire with security forces. Government troops have recaptured much of Dawasah since Sunday.

Federal Police chief, Shaker Jawdat, said 120 IS fighters were killed as forces advanced and became 250 meters away from Dawasah.

Earlier on Monday, the joint command said it had retaken al-Tayaran neighborhood, which extends close to the recently-recaptured Mosul Airport.

$400bn F-35 can only hit 'stationary or slow moving objects'
New report reveals as military bosses claim fighter jet could battle ISIS in the Middle East 'in a few years'
If all goes as planned, there will be no ISIS in the Middle East in a few years. But no doubt other foes will present themselves.
The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter has been hailed as the 'most expensive weapon in history', costing $400bn. However, according to Aviation Week, the plane's laser targeting system has one slight flaw - it can only target stationary or slow moving objects.
Fortunately for us, ISIS doesn't move that fast...
'Despite being among the most technologically advanced low-observable warplanes on the planet, the Lockheed Martin F-35 has one significant shortcoming,' it wrote.

'The Joint Strike Fighter cannot strike moving ground targets using the targeting system and weapons loadout delivered in its final combat Lightning II configuration, Block 3F.'

The jet has gone through dozens of updates to its software, with the Block 3F being the most recent.

#10  That's not such a bad thing. Its primary mission today is to strike Chinese or Russian radar stations, AA installations and missile silos. Once that's accomplished, its secondary mission is to destroy their air forces. After that, B-52s, B-1's, F-15's and F-16's and drones can be deployed to conduct strike missions/turkey shoots against mobile ground targets. Its primary mission is to break down the door using its stealth capability, not serve as a bomb truck.

However, the article is likely to be complete garbage. Project on Government Oversight, the article's source, is a liberal organization. The modus operandi is to shade, distort or omit information. Here's something from the past about POGO's funding:

CREDO, which used to be called Working Assets, funds its activities by providing mobile phone and data plans that compete with AT&T and Verizon via its network operator, Sprint Corp. Users can direct a portion of their fees toward liberal political causes. "We are using the revenue from our customers’ mobile phone bills to keep the pressure on White," a CREDO spokesman said. In June, CREDO customers gave $87,503 to the Project on Government Oversight, a tax-exempt watchdog group that has criticized White and also called for Obama to replace her.

#11  A blog comment on POGO's background:
POGO is just another anti-defense liberal group, composed of anti-defense liberal political hacks whose sole agenda is to deeply cut, and gut, America’s defense. The vast majority of the programs they call “waste” are actually needed military capabilities and weapon systems crucial to ensuring America’s national security and winning the wars of the future. Furthermore, in their drive to gut defense, they’ve buddied up with some of the most leftist groups in the country, including Code Pink and “Just Foreign Policy”[2], some of which are funded by George Soros.

POGO’s goal is not to eliminate “waste”. Their sole goal is to gut America’s defense.
Fifth generation systems like the F-35 do things that are qualitatively different from the existing fleet of F-15's, F-16's and F-18's. They enter highly contested airspace (i.e. China's or Russia's) crammed with sophisticated enemy air assets and air defenses, and hammer key stationary assets like radar stations, air bases or missile silos. In an all-out war situation, their survivability, due to stealth, will reduce our body count at home from city-busting Chinese or Russian nuclear ICBM's.

Then they took a good airframe with all of the right capabilities and tried to make a flying iPhone out of it. They've crammed everything but iTunes and Netflicks into the software and wasted a zillion dollars with that tail wagging the dog logistics program which has taken most of the attention while the fighting capabilities of the Killer Turkey have been neglected.

A good Program Manager could fix this by telling the technogeeks to sit down and shut up and start crafting a software package that is based upon pilot input and effective weapons delivery.

Afghanistan
Militants marry for four times but use children as suicide bombers: Ghani
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
slammed the anti-government armed snuffies for their stance and their so-called holy war, saying the Afghan forces are facing enemies who are using children for suicide kabooms but they themselves marry for four times.

Speaking during a gathering to mark the national day of the Afghan forces, Ghani said the snuffies are being used as tools by the foreigners to do heroin smuggling and loot the natural resources of the country.

He also added that the snuffies are planting roadside kabooms and kill holy mans, teachers, engineers, and those people who are working for the betterment of the country.

Questioning Taliban’s stance to conduct insurgency under the name of Islam, President Ghanis said "Are Taliban ready to sit with Ulemas and offer justifications? Is rebellion allowed in Islam? Is it justified to wage war in a soil where Sharia is enforced in courts or the law of Taliban and their masters are superior to Islamic law?"

The remarks by President Ghani came as the United Nations

in a report earlier last year said they have recorded at 48 children recruited by the parties involved in the conflict.

The report also expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
s regarding the use of seminaries in the tribal regions along Durand Line for recruitment of children.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Lebanese Army Challenges Israeli Provocative Actions on Border
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] The Israeli occupation army on Monday removed cement blocks put on the way linking Bustra farm with the occupied area of Shebaa in 2000 when the Zionist army was forced to with draw from most of the Lebanese territories.

The Zionist soldiers then replaced the cement blocks by an iron gate which can be used to carry out infiltrations into the Lebanese liberated territories according to their security and military interests.

In response, the Lebanese army fetched other cement blocks and positioned them next to the iron gate, blocking the way completely and banning the Zionist army from any possible movement in the area.

It is worth noting that after Zionist withdrawal from most of the Lebanese territories in 2000, the borderline was demarcated under the UN supervision, but without Lebanon’s approval.

Kfar Shuba hills, Ghajar village and most of Shebaa farms are still occupied by the Zionist army which always carries out provocative actions along the Lebanese-Palestinian border.

The Islamic Resistance of Hezbollah, supported by the Lebanese army and people, has been able to confront the Zionist aggressions, achieving major victories and frustrating the Israeli plots.

The Grand Turk
Deputy PM: Turkey aware of its rights in Aegean Sea
[AA.TR] Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said on Monday he hoped recent controversial comments from Greece’s defense minister about a number of Aegean Sea islets were just a personal, not official, position.

Speaking at a news conference after a cabinet meeting in Ankara, Kurtulmus noted Greece was being run by a coalition government and he hoped the defense minister’s last comments on the Kardak islets did not reflect the view of the government in Athens.

"I would like to think that the Greece defense minister just expressed his own view," he said.

Panos Kammenos -- founder of the Independent Greeks junior coalition party -- claimed last Friday The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
was trying "to escalate the crisis" over the Kardak islets, warning against setting foot on them and saying Greek forces were ready for "any contingency".

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
2 days water supply left in Donetsk village

Just a day after Ukrainian volunteer soldiers left a local water plant, nearby cities are starting to experience water shortages, according to Russian language news account.

On Friday, members of the Ukrainian volunteer regiment "Azov" took over the water filtration plant in eastern Avdievka. The plant had been under Ukrainian artillery fire for three days before with some rounds even hitting the plant building itself. Last Thursday, water plant personnel left the plant because of the artillery fire.

The water plant has held a unique status since the start of the war 30 months ago. An agreement between the two warring sides left the plant and its operation intact. Some of that changed last year when Ukrainian forces moved forces into a gray zone -- where neither side's forces were allowed -- effectively cutting off the main road between Donetsk and Gorlovka, which is north of the area of the plant's location. That move effectively put the plant much closer to the Ukrainian side.

A news release by the Donetsk ministry of defense said that Ukrainian forces continued to reinforce areas near to the plant, despite the Ukrainians' exit.

When the Ukrainian forces began their occupation of the plant, according to rebel media, they brought a mortar team with them and began shelling Yasinovataya, which is east of the main road between Donetsk and Gorlovka. The rebels charged that the Ukrainian plan was to make an artillery fire point that the rebel would not hit. Destroying the water plant with artillery would deny water to people and villages on both sides of the line of contact.

On Sunday, rebel forces hit a nearby pumping station with artillery and with artillery delivered mines, according to Ukrainian Russian language news accounts. That attack threatens to leave parts of Avdievka, which is Ukrainian occupied, with only two days of water left. And with the mines on the ground, special measures will have to be taken to ensure the safety of repair crews.

Since Sunday, two Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and five more have been wounded, according to a news account in lb.ua.

On Sunday, rebel forces hit areas near Mariupol with mortar fire, including Vodyanoye, Mainka and Shirokino. Near Donetsk, rebel mortar fire was reported near Avdievka, Luganskoye and Kamenka. Rebel tank gun fire (125mm) was reported at Peski and the Butkova mine.

On Monday, according to a news report in lb.ua, rebel mortar fire hit areas near Mariupol including at Vodyanoye, Novotroitskoye and Pavlopol. Rebel mortar fire was reported at villages near Donetsk including at Troiskoye, Novoluganskoye, Opytnoye, Avdievka, Shakhta, Butovka mine, Luganskoye and Vodyanoye.

’s remaining stronghold in the west of the city.

U.S.-backed army and police units advanced through populated western districts, fighting tough street battles, and announced they had captured Mosul’s southernmost bridge.

Once repaired, the bridge could help bring reinforcements and supplies from the eastern side, piling pressure on the bully boyz dug in the western side among 750,000 civilians.

Iraqi forces captured eastern Mosul in January, after 100 days of fighting. They launched their attack on the districts that lie west of the Tigris a week ago.

If they defeat Islamic State in Mosul, that would crush the Iraq wing of the caliphate that the group’s leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

Since government forces broke through the city’s southern limits on Thursday, more than 10,000 civilians have fled Islamic State-held areas, seeking medical assistance, food and water, Iraqi commanders said.

About 1,000 civilians arrived in the early hours of Monday at the sector held by the Counter Terrorism Service (CTS), the maimed taken to the clinic of this elite unit, while men were screened to make sure they are not Islamic State members.

JCCs, Jewish schools in US hit by fifth wave of bomb threats
[IsraelTimes] Jewish community centers in Alabama, North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Florida evacuated in latest scare; schools in Maryland and Virginia cleared out as well.

At least 17 Jewish community centers in the eastern and midwestern US were targeted with bomb threats Monday, the latest in a series of incidents that has raised fears of anti-Semitism in the country.

Threats were called in to JCCs in Asheville, North Carolina; Birmingham, Alabama; York and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Tarrytown, Plainview and Staten Island, New York; Indianapolis, Indiana; Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Davie, Florida; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Wilmington, Delaware.

Jewish day schools in Rockville, Maryland, and Fairfax, Virginia, both outside Washington, DC; and Davie, Florida, outside Miami, were also evacuated.

Parts of the Providence Road campus of the Shalom Park non-profit Jewish organization in Charlotte, North Carolina, were also partly evacuated, The Charlotte Observer reported; the Jewish Federation of South Jersey in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was also cleared .

In total, at least 17 Jewish institutions were targeted.

Those inside the buildings were evacuated and law enforcement was called in to investigate the threats. All clears were given in a number of cases.

The director of the Birmingham JCC, which has been targeted three times in the past two months, told local media the threats were "very difficult, very challenging, very fearful."

Several of the JCCs targeted were near Philadelphia, where a day earlier a Jewish cemetery was found vandalized, with some 100 headstones damaged or knocked over after a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, was targeted the previous week.

Paul Goldenberg, director of the Secure Community Network, told JTA shortly after reports of the bomb threats began coming in that his organization was working closely with the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI to identify the perpetrators and stop the threats.
Well, guys? You know what time the calls came in and what numbers were called...
SCN is an affiliate of the Jewish Federations of North America that advises Jewish groups and institutions on security. SCN also is working closely with the Anti-Defamation League, Goldenberg said.

No actual bombs have been found at any of the dozens of institutions that have received bomb threats in recent weeks.

"The goal of these people is to wear us down," Goldenberg said. "But we are back in our schools, we are back in our JCCs."

Muslim crowdfunding activists enlist to help 2nd vandalized Jewish cemetery

Tarek El-Medissi (and BDS activist Linda Sarsour), whose campaign has raised over $135K for St. Louis graveyard, says he will divert funds to Philadelphia as well.

#1  Part of an email my mother received a few days ago from the Buffalo Jewish Federation, following the previous wave of phone calls:

The Jewish Community across the United States and in Canada has recently been plagued by bomb threats to 59 Jewish Community Centers since early January. Most recently, Buffalo's Benderson JCC building was the target of such a threat this past week. None of the threats were carried out. No one in any of the buildings was hurt or injured.

Following this week's events, The JCC and Federation received an outpouring of messages of solidarity from friends in our community, most notably from Dr. Stan Bratton and the board of the Network of Religious Communities, and from Dr. Khalid Qazi of Muslim Public Affairs Council of WNY.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced new actions to combat hate crimes and anti-Semitism across New York State after meeting with some 50 Jewish community and interfaith leaders at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Manhattan Thursday. The measures include a $25 million grant program for additional security training needs, cameras, and other related needs to boost safety and security at religious schools and daycare centers. The state will also expand its toll-free hotline to include text message capability to report incidents of bias and discrimination.

It should be noted that the Muslim Public Affairs Council of WNY [western New York] most assuredly includes the various congregations in Lackawanna, which once upon a time provided us with the Lackawanna Six and whose members have demanded and received special prayer times and prayer rooms for the children of their faith in the public schools of the city, among other accommodations. They are learning that certain public postures and behaviours are required here in Dar al Harb... though I do wonder how much of the more than a million dollars Mr. El-Medissi and Ms Sarsour will disburse for the repair of Jewish cemeteries, and what will become of the rest.

Yemen: Two Saudi Drones Downed as Revolutionary Forces Unveil Homemade Drone
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used by a Saudi-led coalition for espionage activities have been downed in Yemen, as revolutionary forces confronting the aggression unveiled its first ever homegrown drone.

Military sources said the two intruding spy drones were shot down by the Yemeni army’s air defense forces on Sunday, the Arabic language al-Masirah news network reported.

The sources said the first drone was targeted by the air defense forces in al-Aqaba area in Jawf province while the second one came down in al-Fariza military base in Jizan province.

It came two days after al-Masirah reported that a Jordanian F-16 warplane had been shot down by the ’anti-aircraft defenses’ of Yemen.

Saudi media, however, claimed that the fighter jet crashed due to ’technical reasons’.

Suicide letters from Mosul schoolboys to Islamic State ‘martyrs’
[Iraq News] "My dear family, please forgive me," reads the handwritten letter discarded in the dusty halls of an Islamic State

training compound in eastern djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
"Don’t be sad and don’t wear the black clothes (of mourning). I asked to get married and you did not marry me off. So, by God, I will marry the 72 virgins in paradise."

They were schoolboy Alaa Abd al-Akeedi’s parting words before he set off from the compound to end his life in a suicide kaboom against Iraqi security forces last year.

The letter was written on an Islamic State form marked "Soldiers’ Department, Martyrs’ Brigade" and in an envelope addressed to his parents’ home in western Mosul.

Akeedi, aged 15 or 16 when he signed up, was one of dozens of young recruits who passed through the training facility in the past 2-1/2 years as they prepared to wage jihad. In several cases this involved carrying out suicide kabooms ‐ Islamic State’s most effective weapon against a U.S.-backed military campaign to retake the group’s last major urban bastion in Iraq.

His letter never reached his family. It was left behind with a handful of other bombers’ notes to relatives when Islamic State abandoned the facility in the face of an army offensive that has reclaimed more than half of the city since October.

The bandidos bandidos holy warriors also left a handwritten registry containing the personal details of about 50 recruits. Not all entries had years of birth, and only about a dozen had photographs attached, but many recruits were in their teens or early 20s.

These documents, found by Rooters on a trip into eastern Mosul after the army recaptured that area, include some of the first first-hand accounts from Islamic State’s jacket wallahs to be made public and offer an insight into the mindset of young recruits prepared to die for Islamic State’s ultra-hardline ideology.

Rooters interviewed relatives of three of the fighters including Akeedi to help determine where they came from and why they chose jihad. In rare testimonies by families of Islamic State suicide bombers, they told of teenagers who joined the jihadists to their dismay and bewilderment, and died within months.

Rooters could not independently verify the information about other recruits in the registry. Islamic State does not make itself available to independent media outlets so could not be contacted for comment on the letters, the registry or the phenomenon of teenage suicide bombers.

On the fifth day of the fourth round of the intra-Syrian talks, UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura met the Syrian opposition delegation headed by Nasr Hariri, a senior member of the largest anti-regime group, the Syrian National Coalition.

"The regime is actually coordinating with ISIS and has opened a corridor to prevent the Free Syrian Army from fighting ISIS," Hariri told a news conference at the UN at Geneva following a two-hour meeting with de Mistura.

Claiming the regime did not want the FSA to defeat the terror group, Hariri said: "This regime is setting up a buffer zone between the FSA and ISIS."

"We just gave the special envoy a video of testimony of a former detainee who was detained by the FSA and was recently released. In the video, he explains and testifies how regime forces are coordinating with ISIS," Hariri said.

Iraq to Fight ISIL in Syria in Case Homeland Threatened: Foreign Minister
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] The Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari stated on Monday that his country intends to fight ISIS in Syria on the basis of protecting the Iraqi territories from the threats of the terrorist group, not interfering in the Syrian affairs.

Al-Jaafari told the Russian news agency that the Iraq forces will strike the forces of Evil within the Syrian territories in case they pose an extended threat against the Iraqi territories.

Iraq’s air force struck ISIS targets in Syria border towns of Boukamal and Husseibah, strikes that came in response to recent bombings in Baghdad claimed by ISIS and linked to the bully boys’ operations in Syria.

Europe
Pope: Islam needs "bridges not walls" - as he looks on the Leonine walls without which he wouldn't exist
Edited for brevity, more at the source
Pope Francis Tears at History's Walls against Islam

BY RAYMOND IBRAHIM

[JihadWatch] Pope Francis continues to argue for two interrelated points that, while seemingly humane, compromise Western nations and expose their citizens to danger.

He reiterated his first point earlier this month when he said, "I appeal not to create walls but to build bridges."

Francis reiterated his second point a few days ago when he said, "Muslim terrorism does not exist."

His logic is that, because there are Christians who engage in criminal and violent activities--and yet no one blames Christianity for their behavior -- so too should Islam not be blamed when Muslims engage in criminal and violent activities.

In this, the Catholic pope appears unable or unwilling to make the pivotal distinction between violence committed in accordance with Islamic teachings, and violence committed in contradiction of Christian teachings.

But there's another relevant and often overlooked irony: every morning Francis wakes up in the Vatican and looks out his window, he sees a very large and concrete reminder that gives the lie to both his argument against walls and his argument in defense of Islam. I speak of the great walls surrounding Vatican City, more specifically the Leonine Walls.

Context: A couple of years after Islamic prophet Muhammad died in 632, his followers erupted out of Arabia and conquered surrounding non-Muslim lands in the name of Islam. In a few decades, they had annexed two-thirds of what was in the 7th century Christendom. They took all of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain, until they were finally stopped at Tours in central France (732). By the late 9thcentury, jihadi incursions had transformed the Mediterranean Sea into a Muslim lake; the major islands -- Sicily, Crete, Rhodes, Malta, Cyprus -- were conquered, and the European coast was habitually raided for booty and slaves.

According to the most authoritative and contemporary Muslim chroniclers -- al-Waqidi, al-Baladhuri, al-Tabari, al-Maqrizi, etc. -- all this was done because Islam commands Muslims to subjugate and humiliate non-Muslims.

It was in this context that, in 846, Muslim fleets from North Africa landed near Rome. Unable to breach the walls of the Eternal City, they sacked and despoiled the surrounding countryside, including -- to the consternation of Christendom -- the venerated and centuries-old basilicas of St Peter and St Paul.

The Muslim invaders desecrated the tombs of the revered apostles and stripped them of all their treasures. Pope Leo IV (847-855) responded by building large walls and fortifications along the right bank of the Tiber to protect the sacred sites from further Muslim raids. Completed by 852, the walls were in places 40 feet high and 12 feet thick.

Today, many Muslims, not just of the ISIS variety, continue to boast that Islam will conquer Rome, the only of five apostolic sees -- the other four being Antioch, Alexandria, Jerusalem, and Constantinople -- never to have been subjugated by jihad.

Similarly, Muslims all throughout Europe continue exhibiting the same hostility and contempt for all things and persons non-Islamic, whether by going on church vandalizing sprees and breaking crosses, or by raping "infidel" women as theirs by right.

In short, Pope Leo's walls prove Pope Francis wrong on both counts: yes, walls are sometimes necessary to preserve civilization; and yes, Islam does promote violence and intolerance for the other -- far more than any other religion. This fact is easily discerned by examining the past and present words and deeds of Muslims, all of which evince a remarkable and unwavering continuity of hostility against "infidels."

Perhaps most ironic of all, had it not been for Pope Leo's walls -- and so many other Christian walls, such as Constantinople's, which kept Islam out of Europe for centuries, and Vienna's, which stopped a full-blown jihad as recent as 1683 -- there might not be a pope today to pontificate about how terrible walls are and how misunderstood Islam is.

And when Francis accuses those who build walls of not being Christian, as he did of Trump, he essentially accuses men like Pope Leo IV -- who did so much to protect and preserve Christendom at a time when Islam was swallowing up the world -- of being no Christians at all.

#1  he doesn't know much about Islam then. Islam was spread by the sword. he would be given three choices:

Convert to Islam.

Pay a special tax in humiliation. That includes bowing and groveling before your Islamic Masters. You are not allowed to publicly display your religion or practice it - (Allah is pathetic little god who cannot stand up to competition or criticism after all). You can be killed out-of-hand and you have no legal rights.

Be killed.

Perhaps the good Pope should deliver his message in Mecca...

Troops shoot Palestinian woman thought to be armed
[Ynet] A Paleostinian woman was shot at the Qalandiya checkpoint on Monday afternoon when security forces suspected she planned to carry out a stabbing attack. A search of her possessions, however, did not find any possible weapons.

Troops at the checkpoint saw the woman approaching towards them on a road meant for vehicles while holding an unidentified object in her hand.

They ordered her to stop. She ignored their repeated calls and continued walking towards them while holding her bag in a way that raised their suspicion, leading the troops to shoot in order to neutralize her.

The suspect, a resident Kafr 'Aqab around 20 years old, was taken to the hospital in light condition.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Man sentenced for cutting off woman’s finger and drinking her blood in Juggalo ritual
[KANSASCITY] A Wisconsin man has been sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison for cutting off a woman’s finger and drinking her blood in a ritual to honor a fellow fan of the bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit
... ruled by Democrats since 1962. A city whose Golden Age included the Purple Gang...
rap duo Insane Clown Posse.

Twenty-four-year-old Jonathan Schrap was sentenced Friday on one count of second-degree reckless injury.

A complaint says Schrap and his friends were staging a "ritualistic memorial" at his house in August to commemorate a deceased member of the Juggalos, the name given to Insane Clown Posse fans.

"Where do you go with this? How can this happen? How can this even happen in Green Bay?" Judge John P. Zakowski said at the sentencing, according to the Chicago Tribune.

WBAY-TV reported the woman first allowed Schrap to cut her arm with a machete and drink her blood. She eventually gave permission to Schrap cut off her right pinky finger with a machete, which according to court documents required more than one blow to sever.

"Jon then placed the finger in his freezer where he said he would cook it and eat it later," court documents said. "The group then attempted to stop the bleeding by using a car cigarette lighter which failed. They then used a blowtorch."

The mother of the woman’s boyfriend persuaded her to go to the hospital, and staff members called police. The woman said she was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the ritual.

Schrap’s Facebook page is full of Juggalo imagery.

I believe the girl got into this situation because we're 'publically' not allowed to teach our children to critically think or to make their own decisions anymore. It's raycyst or demeaning or something.

Answers the good Judge's question, though.

Although the blowtorch usage does show some improvisational skills by someone.

claims that the murderous Moslem group is tying stray dogs with improvised explosives to use them against advancing security forces in western Mosul.

The video shows three members of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) crouching near a small dog which Islamic State, according to the men featured in the clip, wired with three bottles filled with kabooms.

"This is the latest from ISIS (Islamic State), abusing an animal," one fighter said, pointing to the dog. "What sin did it commit?," another one wondered.

The authenticity of the video, published by PMU’s media, could not be verified.

Iraqi government forces, backed by PMU and U.S.-led troops and advisers, began a major offensive on February 19th to clear western Mosul from Islamic State bad boys. The government declared late January its forces had recaptured the eastern section after three months of fighting.

Islamic State has largely relied on booby-trapped vehicles, landmines, weaponized drones and human jacket wallahs in facing Iraqi troops, but it has also resorted to other extraordinary deceptive tactics such as using decoy military equipment and camouflage-dressed mannequins, and lately, booby-trapped animals. Some local observers believe the tactics signal desperation and the waning combat resources on Islamic State’s behalf.

ِA few days after the western Mosul offensives launched, the Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said IS fighters booby-trapped sheep to hinder assaults by PMU troops on Ein al-Tallawi village, which is near to the group’s stronghold town of Tal Afar.

Afghanistan
‘Up to 20 terror groups’ waging war in Afghanistan
[AA.TR] Up to 20 terrorist groups are waging war in Afghanistan, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
said Monday.
I generally dump them all into "Taliban" or "ISIS" groups unless there's a particular identification as to faction -- Haqqani network, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, East Turkestan Islamic Movement, or Hizb-i-Islami-Hekmatyar. Pak Taliban's Mullah Fazlullah lives and operates from Afghanistan and probably within the country. So does Jamaat ul-Ahrar. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi flits back and forth across the Durrand Line with seeming impunity. There have been U.S. and Afghan air strikes on Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad camps and, if I remember correctly, HuJI. And of course there are the friendly Arab invaders affiliated with core al-Qaeda. No doubt Ghani and Abdullah and the intel community are aware of more.
In remarks made during a first-of-its-kind "Day of Security Forces" ceremony at the military airbase in the capital Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
, Ghani said: "There is not much of a difference between these terror groups. All of them, God forbid, want to destroy Afghanistan but use different tactics."

He paid tributes to the sacrifices of thousands of security personnel, many of whom have bit the dust and limbs in the ongoing violence in the country.

The president said Afghanistan did not want war but it was imposed on it. He questioned the legitimacy of the Taliban’s insurgency, and vowed to take more measures to strengthen and further equip Afghan forces in a bid to scale down casualties.

According to the U.S. government's Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction figures, 6,785 Afghan security personnel were killed between Jan. 1, 2016, and Nov. 12, 2016, with another 11,777 maimed. This is about 35 per cent more than in 2015, when some 5,000 security forces were killed after taking the nation-wide security responsibilities from the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants...
forces.

Also on Monday, Gen. John Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, reiterated support for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan. In a message to mark the "Day of Security Forces", Nicholson said NATO would continue providing training, assistance and support o the Afghan forces.

Taliban confirm commander’s death
In a rare admission, the Taliban in Afghanistan have acknowledged the death of their key commander in a U.S. Arclight airstrike, who was said to be serving as the myrmidon group’s interest in Kunduz province.

Afghan Taliban on their website Monday said Abdul Salam Akhund was killed in a U.S. air raid in the province’s restive Dasht-e-Archi district bordering Tajikistan.

The Afghan Ministry of Defense had announced the myrmidon’s death on Sunday.

Asadullah Omarkhail, front man for the provincial governor, told Anadolu Agency: "This is a major blow to the murderous Moslems who have been forced to flee Kunduz after a clean-up operation was launched by the security forces upon reclaiming Kunduz last year."

#1  I generally dump them all into "Taliban" or "ISIS" groups unless there's a particular identification as to faction

Since terror groups in general seem to freely lend and borrow key personnel except when they are directly fighting one another -- when members seem to desert the loser for the winner with equal ease -- that makes sense to me for our purposes. Just keeping track of who is leading which group in Mali, and where that group's allegiance lies, gives me a headache. Boko Haram is almost as bad, as we discovered when the original Al Qaeda-oriented leader brought in his faction to take over the ISIS-linked group and make it behave properly, while the other original Al Qaeda-oriented leader, having taken the main group to ISIS, now leads an Al Qaeda-linked faction by default, while decrying the other guy as a thief and a traitor... I think. In the meantime both are competing to show they are the jihadiest jihadis of all by sending girls and some boys to blow themselves up in marketplaces while the men rampage through remote villages, pillaging, plundering, and killing.

Government
Trump to call for $54B budget hike in defense spending
[AA.TR] President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
will call for an increase of $54 billion in defense spending as part of his budget proposals for 2018, according to the White House on Monday.

Later, the president also said his government would fix the "horrible effects of Obamacare
... aka the Affordable Care Act, an ineptly designed and worse executed piece of legislation designed to bring 17 percent of the U.S. economy under the direct control of the government. The previous iteration, known as Hillarycare, was laughed out of Washington. This stinker was passed on a party-line vote without being read...
" after he met executives from health insurance companies.

"The finances of our country are in a mess," Trump told news hounds at the White House. "Billions and billions of dollars will be saved," through the upcoming budget he said, noting that the U.S. national debt has doubled over the last eight years.

An approximately nine-percent increase in defense spending, from some $600 billion last year, would fulfill Trump's election campaign promise of making "one of the greatest buildups in history" for the U.S. military.

This year’s new budget would focus on "military, safety, economic development," Trump said.

The government, meanwhile, would be expected to cut spending in other areas.

The Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of State, as well as foreign aid and some domestic programs, are anticipated to bear the brunt of cutbacks.

"I want the American people to know that the budget will reflect their priorities ... no more wasted money. We are going to be spending money in a very, very careful manner ... we must do a lot more with less," Trump said.

That's an interesting perspective since he got where he was going. When all you have is a hammer you pretend that every problem is a nail. Makes sense only in your own private universe.

I wonder if France has the "Silent Majority" that will come out and give Le Pen the "unexpected" victory.

#6  It may help Le Pen in the runoff that her contemptible likely opponent really dropped the ball:
Mr. Macron angered many of the Fillon supporters he will need to beat Ms. Le Pen on the final ballot by calling France’s colonization of Algeria “a crime against humanity, a real barbarity.” Not even French politicians on the radical left typically go that far and a suddenly irritable Mr. Macron, who had been surfing on a wave of favourable media coverage, spent several days on the defensive.
We'll find out soon enough how stupid French voters are. Given their affinity for Obama, I'm inclined to think 10 on a scale of 10. British voters are not much better.

Wendy's plans self-ordering kiosks at 1,000 locations
Wendy's says it plans to install self-ordering kiosks at about 1,000 locations by the end of the year.
$15 minimum wager earners hardest hit
A typical location would have three kiosks, The Columbus Dispatch reported. Higher-volume restaurants will be given priority for the kiosks.

Wendy's chief information officer, David Trimm, said the kiosks are intended to appeal to younger customers and reduce labor costs. Kiosks also allow customers of the fast food giant to circumvent long lines during peak dining hours while increasing kitchen production.
I actually prefer kiosks and self checkout stands. I get it done quicker than most of the idiots behind the register, I know it is right and I don't have to interact with the mouth breathers.
Trim estimates the company will see a return on its investment in less than two years.

"They are looking to improve their automation and their labor costs, and this is a good way to do it," said Darren Tristano, vice president with Technomic, a food-service research and consulting firm. "They are also trying to enhance the customer experience. Younger customers prefer to use a kiosk."

Kiosks are also valued by the Dublin, Ohio-based company for their ability to provide data about customers.

"This move puts them at the forefront of the kiosk and tech movement," Tristano said.

Kiosks already have been installed at several central Ohio locations, where the company first tested the technology.

Customers will still be able to order at the counter for now, although Tristano predicts that mobile ordering and payment via smartphones will one day overtake self-ordering kiosks and cash registers.

Shoooot, that's my last three fast food experiences. 'Sir your 29 Cordon Bleus will be with you soon.'

Eh?! 86 that order.

86 whats?

Seriously, last one I went to, new joint, supposedly good. Toothless got the order wrong, staples was busy trying to look busy, bad tat 1 and bad tat 2 were drooling on themselves while the manager was playing round robin with the pre-lunch cleaning duties and getting the fries out of the fryer.

Children, read that last part again very carefully. One person was running that entire restaurant because hustle and win.

The real loss here would be the drive-through operator, which does take some talent, will go the way of the blue tooth as the app allows drive through customers to use their phone/car. The second will be the manager who, without employees, will not be selected for cut and hustle but making sure the ingredients are assembled correctly. Think large vending machine.

I'm pretty sure if I was given a couple beers and an afternoon, I could diagram a burger making machine; I'm sure the pros have binders of ideas. Probably a bushel of sketches on napkins made while waiting for their fast food order, only to find out the order is wrong.

#6  Used a McDonalds kiosk in Poland last fall. The Kiosk was outside of the actual restaurant space in a mall, reducing the number of square feet needed to operate. Order (in your own language) and pay outside, walk a dozen steps to the pick up window and get the order that you keyed in. This was the same week $15 wage protests were raging here in the states.

The trade shows in the past have had many exhibits showcasing food-service automation. There wasn't much interest, partly due to 'image', but mainly due to labor costs being affordable.

#11  Wow Besoeker, come a long way since the externally powered dancing dog.

So much of fast food is already prepped before delivery to the location, I cannot think of a single fast food genre which couldn't be completely automated, rather than someone refilling ingredients. Mexican, maybe tricky, but I bet folding burritos and filling tacos is easier than I think. The fish & chips go straight from the bag to the fryer. Run burgers through a convection conveyor and cook both sides at once.

A real loss would be losing all the crummy My First Job opportunities. My grades went up after a month of dishwashing because I didn't want to be a dishwasher my whole life.

There are a number of people in my town who do not work I want to hire to get to the things I have a hard time getting done - clean restroom, change odd light bulbs, sweeping, day to day things. Thing is, they are probably only worth $3 an hour, maybe less, until they can show me they are more than a drugged out bum.

Syrian Army Advances towards Palmyra, Inflicts Losses upon ISIL Terrorists
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Syrian army and allies advanced towards Palmyra in Homs countryside on Monday, inflicting heavy losses upon ISIS terrorists.

The Syrian army also came closer to Matar Mountain, which overlooks the entrance of Palmyra city, following fierce festivities with ISIS Takfiri

UN: Muslim Africans face discrimination in Germany
[AA.TR] Moslems of African descent face growing discrimination in Germany due to worrying levels of Islamophobia
...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do...
, a UN monitoring group warned on Monday.
...also due to high levels of Muslim Africans misbehaving with one another and the locals, but that mustn't be mentioned.
Ricardo Sunga, chairman of the UN's Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, announced results of a fact-finding visit to Germany at a news conference in Berlin.

"Moslems of African descent are facing increasingly difficult times in the enjoyment of their rights due to increased Islamophobia and Afrophobia," he said.

While praising Germany’s promotion of human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
and diversity, Sunga expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
over widespread problems faced by Africans, and said Moslem Africans often become victims of discrimination in the workplace or in schools.

"Moslem women of African descent face further discrimination when it comes to access to the labor market," he said, referring to discrimination against them due their appearance or Moslem dress.

"Many Moslem students of African descent describe their experiences in school as traumatic as they experience not only anti-Black racism but also anti-Moslem racism," he also added.

The UN’s expert group visited Germany this month to monitor the human rights situation of people of African descent in Germany, whose population estimated at 800,000.
