The CIA really is out to get General Flynn
How come no-one is accusing NSA Director Michael Flynn of taking bribes from Turkey's dictator Recep Erdogan? Not long ago, they did. Last November 18, Commentary Magazine's Noah Rothman called Flynn a "dubious choice" for the National Security Council because his consulting company had a Turkish client, adding that Flynn’s views on Turkey raised a "conflict of interest." Flynn had published an article in The Hill on Nov. 8 warning that America's dalliance with the messianic Turkish Islamist and alleged coup plotter Fetullah Guelen might undermine the country's relationship with NATO, at a time when Russia was giving Turkey the full court press.

#1  Author Spengler nailed it, dead on. Flynn refused to be a Klingon surrogate at DIA like his lap-dog predecessors. There were other issues at DIA as well (not found in this article) dealing with DIA's clandestine collection capabilities. Klingon turf issues as it were. The new Director Mike Pompeo has his hands full.

BLUF from the article: "Flynn is the one senior US intelligence officer with the guts to blow the whistle on a series of catastrophic intelligence and operational failures. The available facts point to the conclusion that elements of the humiliated (and perhaps soon-to-be-unemployed) intelligence community is trying to exact vengeance against a principled and patriotic officer. When the Turkish smear against Flynn came out in November, I smelled a rat. The present affair stinks like a dumpster full of dead rats."

#2  If any of this is true, it's long past calling in the Marine from Quantico and shutting the place down. Seeking to undermine the legitimate elected government of the US is too much to allow in these times. Once was enough with doing it to Bush.

What We're Fighting For - Our acts of moral courage defend America as surely as any act of violence.
[NYT] When his convoy was ambushed during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, First Lt. Brian Chontosh ordered his Humvee driver to head straight into the oncoming machine gun fire. They punched through, landing in a trench full of heavily armed Iraqi soldiers. Lieutenant Chontosh and his Marines leapt out and he ran down the trench firing away, dropping one enemy soldier after another. First his rifle jammed, then he ran out of ammunition, so he switched to his pistol. He shot it dry, reloaded, and shot it dry again. So he picked up an AK-47 from a dead Iraqi, fired that dry, picked up another AK, fired that dry, picked up a rocket-propelled grenade, fired it, and led the group back to the Humvee, their attack having almost completely cleared the trench. Almost.

One Iraqi was playing dead, fiddling with the pin of a grenade. Lieutenant Chontosh had no ammo, but on the ground were a couple of M-16 rounds from when his rifle had jammed. He grabbed one, loaded, and before the Iraqi could pull the pin, Lieutenant Chontosh locked eyes with him and shot him dead. All told, according to the journalist Phil Zabriskie’s account of the ambush in "The Kill Switch," Lieutenant Chontosh had killed about two dozen people that day.

Olde Tyme Religion
Female Ontario Premier Forced To Sit In A Corner While Visiting Mosque
[InformationLiberation] Before she was allowed to deliver a message that "we're all the same," Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne was forced to sit in the back corner of a Mosque all by herself while the Muslim men prayed.

From the Toronto Sun:
While the men prayed, she sat patiently in the back corner of the mosque waiting to say the words many in the room were so thankful to hear.

"There should be no fear ever in worshipping your God, our God, in Ontario or in Canada," Premier Kathleen Wynne said to the worshippers who came for noon-hour prayers at the Muslim Association of Canada’s Masjid Mosque on Dundas St. W [on January 30th].

[...]"As-Salam-u-Alaikum (Peace be unto you). Thanks for welcoming me into your house, your home," said Wynne, who also visited the "sisters" section of the mosque on the second floor. But other than media and her staff, she was the only female in the room for the male prayer.

"Our government stands with you. We are not different. We are the same. We are all Canadians."

Wynne is Canada's first openly gay head of government in Canada and the first female Premier of Ontario.

The mosque she spoke at is run by an anti-gay Muslim preacher:
As quoted in the CIJ News in 2015 from a question and answer session on Onislam.net, Imam Wael Shehab said "homosexuality is a sinful act in Islam ... I’d cite the following fatwa of Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi, president of the Fiqh Council of North America:

’We should consider them people who get themselves engaged in a sinful act. We should deal with them in the same way we deal with any people who are involved in alcoholics, gambling or adultery. We should have deep repugnance to their acts and we must remind and warn them."

If they persist he said "we should certainly avoid those people."

She didn't bring it up and ignored the issue entirely when the media questioned her on it.

Large bomb explodes in Pakistan, police say
Ay-Pee
Pakistani police say a large bomb has struck a protest rally in the eastern city of Lahore.

Local police official Ali Raza says Monday's blast occurred when a man on a motorcycle rammed into the crowd of hundreds of pharmacists WTF?, who were protesting new amendments to a law governing drug sales. A Taliban faction claimed the attack.

The police say it is not yet clear how many people may have been killed or wounded in the bombing. Live TV registered a loud bang and showed smoke billowing up as people ran away, some of them carrying the wounded.

Rep. Maxine Waters: 'Investigation Necessary to Find Evidence to Impeach Trump'
[Breitbart] Sunday on MSNBC’s "AM Joy," discussing her multiple calls to impeach President Donald Trump, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) said, "I think that it’s there, we just have to dig deeper, do the investigation and find it."

Partial transcript as follows:

REID: And you have gone all the way there, talking, using the I-word with Donald Trump about impeachment.

WATERS: Yes.

REID: Do you stand by that and what would he be impeached for in your view?

WATERS: Yes, I have led in talking about impeachment. And some people say, well, it’s too early for that. It’s never too early if you understand how dangerous this man really is. I do believe that there is a connection between the Ukraine and Donald Trump and of course Russia. I think that he colluded with Putin during the election and that hacking and everything that took place. I think that it’s there, we just have to dig deeper, do the investigation and find it.

#7  Now They’re Trotting Out Plans For a Coup D’Etat

"We knew this would get dusted off eventually. Kathleen Parker at The Washington Post trotted out Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, which deals with presidential incapacity.
With luck, and Cabinet-level courage that is not much in evidence, there’s a chance we won’t have to wait two long years, during which, let’s face it, anything could happen. In anticipation of circumstances warranting a speedier presidential replacement, wiser minds added Section 4 to the 25th Amendment, which removes the president if a majority of the Cabinet and the vice president think it necessary, i.e., if the president is injured or falls too ill to serve. Or, by extension, by being so incompetent — or not-quite-right — that he or she poses a threat to the nation and must be removed immediately and replaced by the vice president.

So how does that really work? Nobody knows for sure, because it’s never really been done (not for more than a few hours–or days–at least). But in theory at least, our government has the ultimate kill-switch for a president off the rails."

Sears and K-Mart Pull (some) Trump Items
[MSN] Reuters reported Saturday that Sears Holdings and subsidiary Kmart will discontinue online sales of 31 items from the Trump Home collection, which includes lines of living room and bedroom furniture, lamps and chandeliers.
A last gasp for life. Or relevance.
"As part of the company's initiative to optimize its online product assortment, we constantly refine that assortment to focus on our most profitable items," Hanover said, adding that neither Sears nor Kmart carry Trump Home products in their retail stores.
I wonder if they have reduced any other product lines? Maybe sold off the 100-year old Craftsman line?
As of Sunday, 14 Trump Home products sold by third-party vendors remain on the Sears website, all but one listed with discounted prices. A $942 Trump Home mirror is being sold for $628.
Supply and demand. The progs just don't understand that. Hillary! items would be flying off the shelves!

Authorities in Jerusalem arrested two men Monday morning in an apparent crackdown on a vigilante "modesty squad" which has operated for years in the capital’s haredi neighborhoods.

The two men, whose names have not yet been released for publication, are both senior figures within the Committee for the Purity of the Camp. Formerly known as the Modesty Patrol, the Committee is a fringe organization seeking to impose its own standards of modest behavior and dress on the larger haredi population through intimidation and harassment.

#3  We toured Jerusalem 8 years ago and because of a map error we ended up in an Haradi neighborhood. A billboard stated something to the effect that if anyone saw a person who did not belong there to politely show them out. We walked into a butcher shop, several customers left, and the manager showed us out.

#4  ..the butcher politely showed us how to get out of the neighborhood.
Posted by: CC Reader || 02/13/2017 11:37 Comments || Top||

#5  You can visit these neighborhoods but they ask that you follow a few rules.

"1. Women and girls (young girls as well) should wear a skirt that goes beyond the knees, and clothing that covers the shoulders and a closed neckline, and sleeves that go at least until the elbows.

Both women (young girls as well) and men (young boys as well) must avoid wearing shorts.

Moreover, there are several rules of behavior:

1. Tourists are asked not to travel in large groups.

2. Residents should not be photographed and certainly not filmed without asking for permission, especially on the Sabbath. But taking photographs of random street scenes is fine in most neighborhoods, except in some parts of Meah Shearim.

3. During the Jewish Sabbath, known as 'Shabbos' or 'Shabbat' (from sunset Friday until it is completely dark on Saturday night, i.e., 25 hours long), refrain from violating the Shabbat in these areas. That means: no mobile phones, no cigarettes, no (photo or video) cameras, and perhaps somewhat more respectable dress. These items should not only not be used, but they should also not be visibly carried around. If they must be taken along, carry them in a bag, and don't forget to turn off your mobile phone.

4. Avoid wearing Christian symbols, such as crosses or religious shirts. Also, since many residents are anti-Zionist, some of them very strongly so, wearing pro-Israel shirts and the like may lead to uncomfortable looks."

If you don't follow the rules, you will be politely (and firmly) asked to leave.

They won't kidnap or behead you, unlike some other neighborhoods. They might insult you a bit though.

Mercer - Coequal in Tyranny: The Ninth Circuit's Rules for Radicals
[Townhall] Read the judicial rules for radicals issued by the United States Court Of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, in affirmation of the ban on The Ban.

It follows the Executive Order issued by President Donald Trump, with the imprimatur of 62 million voters, to protect the nation from foreign terrorists entering into the United States. Two states objected to the president's undeniably badly written Order, which, while upholding negative rights--and neither denying natural rights nor minting positive ones--was nevertheless replete with administrative errors.

Acting as coequal partners in the administrative tyranny the president is trying to break, the two states issued a temporary restraining order against "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States." (I can already hear the election midterm ads.)

In the corner for the Deplorables was a government lawyer. August Flentje Esq. had "argued" (if you can call it that) for an emergency stay of the Washington State district court’s temporary restraining order against the president. The three Ninth Circuit jurists who heard the case said no.

CAREER GOVERNMENT LAWYERS

If you’re good at what you do, you look to make it in the private sector (as our president did, before he did us a favor). If not, you seek sheltered employment (as President Trump’s predecessor did). Clearly, clerking for the Supreme Court, as August Flentje had done, doesn’t mean a whole lot.

Finley: Left bites Ivanka's liberal hand
[Detroit News] Liberals are so determined to vanquish all things Trump that they risk losing the one friend they may have in this new White House.

Ivanka Trump, the new president’s oldest daughter and most trusted personal adviser, is as stylish a first family member as the country has seen in a while. She turned her fashion sense into a clothing line that is sold in many of the nation’s top stores, including Nordstrom.

Or at least it was. The sight of Ivanka Trump’s name on the garments’ labels so triggered the derangement of her father’s haters that they demanded the upscale retailer rid the clothing from its racks, or face boycott.

Boycotts are the favorite weapon of the resistance movement. Anyone who suggests affinity for Donald Trump or cooperates with his administration or fails to speak out against him on command (see Tom Brady) faces being ostracized or having their livelihoods threatened and their names smeared.

The left’s demand for conformity in loathing Trump is creating a blacklist to rival that of Joe McCarthy’s Red Scare.

Jim Webb: There's a ‘Campaign' on the Hill, in Media, Academia to ‘Personally Discredit' Trump
[Breitbart] Sunday on NBC’s "Meet The Press," former U.S. Senator from Virginia, and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb said there was "a campaign" underway on Capitol Hill, in the media and academia "to personally discredit" President Donald Trump.

Webb said, "You know, there is a campaign going on on the Hill in the media, in the academia to personally discredit not only Donald Trump, but the people who are around him. You know, the end result is to slow down the process. You and I were talking about the confirmation process, slow it down so that by ’18 when the Democrats are vulnerable particularly in the Senate there would not be a record of accomplishment that they can run against and at the same time, the Democratic Party, over the past five or six years has moved very far to the left. When you can’t have a Jefferson-Jackson dinner which was the primary celebratory event of the Democratic Party for years because Jefferson and Jackson were slaveholders they were also great Americans in their day, something different has happened to the Democratic Party."

The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels killed a six-member family in an air strike on the family's house in the Red Sea port city of Mokha on Sunday evening, a medic and security official told Xinhua.

"Doctor Molok Mahis, director of maternal and childhood center, a non-governmental organization, was critically injured in the air strike on her home in Mokha and she is being now treated at the intensive care in the hospital," the medic told Xinhua by phone.

"Her leg was amputated in the air strike and six members of her family were killed," the medic said.

The security official in the port city confirmed that all six members of social activist Mahis were killed in one of the evening air strike that flattened her house to the ground.

This is the latest in a series of air strikes hitting Yemeni civilians since the war began in 2015.

US Air Force Rotates Supersonic Strategic Bombers in the Asia-Pacific
[TheDiplomat] The United States Air Force (USAF) has deployed four B-1B Lancer heavy strategic bombers to Andersen Air Force Base on Guam in the Western Pacific. The deployment is in support of United States Pacific Command’s continuous bomber presence mission in the region.

The four bombers of the USAF’s 9th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron (EBS) of the 7th Bomb Wing will replace the 34th EBS. B-1B bombers and over 300 Airmen from the 34th EBS of the 28th Bomb Wing first deployed to Guam from Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota in August 2016. It marked the first deployment of B-1B bombers to Guam in over a decade. The supersonic Lancers replaced the base’s fleet of B-52H long-range heavy bombers. The USAF has routinely been stationing B-1, B-52H, and B-2 Spirit bombers in Guam since 2004.

The B-1B Lancers from the 9th EBS, like their predecessors, will conduct routine, strategic deterrence patrols and regional training missions with allies and partner nations in order to enhance interoperability and to strengthen regional cooperation. "They will provide a significant rapid global strike capability that enables readiness and commitment to deterrence, offers assurance to the U.S. allies and strengthens regional security and stability in the region," according to a Pentagon press release.

Developed in the 1970s, the B-1 constitutes the backbone of the United States long-range bomber force."The USAF’s 62 B-1B Lancers are capable of carrying up to 75,000 pounds (34,000 kilograms) of weapons--the largest payload of both guided and unguided weapons in the USAF’s inventory. Though heavily armed, the bomber can reach a top speed of Mach 1.2 and can operate at altitudes above 30,000 feet (9,100 meters)," as I explained elsewhere.

In September 2016, one supersonic B-1B Lancer heavy strategic bomber, escorted by USAF F-16 fighter jets and Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) F-15K aircraft performed a low-level flight near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on the Korean Peninsula and landed at Osan Air Base in South Korea. It was the closest a B-1B Lancer has ever flown to the border separating North and South Korea. (In January 2016, the USAF also flew a B-52H, accompanied by two ROK F-15Ks and two USAF F-16s, to the Korean peninsula in response to a North Korean nuclear test.)

In response, Pyongyang accused the United States of trying to launch a preemptive nuclear strike. However, the B-1B is no longer nuclear capable--the United States eliminated the nuclear mission for the bomber in 1994. The conversion of the USAF’s B-1 bomber fleet from nuclear to conventional began in 2007 and ended in 2011.

DPRK claims successful test firing of medium long-range ballistic missile
[NEWS.XINHUANET] The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Monday claimed it successfully test-fired a surface-to-surface medium- and long-range ballistic missile Pukguksong-2 and its top leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
guided the test firing, according to the state news agency KCNA.

The state media called Pukguksong-2 a "Korean style new type strategic weapon," which was developed on the instructions of top leader Kim Jong-un on the basis of the success made in the test-firing of the submarine-launched ballistic missile last August.

Kim received the report on the development of this surface-to-surface ballistic missile, set the date for the test launch and personally guided the preparations on the spot, it said.

The missile test proved the reliability and security of the surface launch system and starting feature of the high thrust solid fuel-power engine and reconfirmed the guidance and control features of the ballistic missile during its active flight and working feature of the engines and those of separation at the stages, the KCNA said.

The launch also verified the position control and guidance in the middle section and section of re-entry after the separation of the improved missile warhead, which can be tipped with a nuclear warhead, and the feature of evading interception, it added.

The state-run media noted that the test firing was conducted at a high angle considering security of the neighboring countries.

combatant Khaled Sharrouf has become the first dual national to be stripped of his Australia citizenship under a 2015 anti-terrorism law, local media reported Saturday.

Australia authorities recently evoked the law for the first time ever, a spokesperson for Immigration Minister Peter Dutton acknowledged Saturday, which gives the government the authority to strip the citizenship of dual nationals suspected of terrorism.

The government declined to name the individual affected, but the Australian newspaper identified the person as Sharrouf, the son of Lebanese immigrants colonists and an infamous member of the Islamic State terror group.

Sharrouf, 35, traveled to Syria in late 2013 prior to joining the Islamic State the following year, the newspaper reported. He gained notoriety in August 2014 after tweeting a photograph that showed his 7-year-old son holding the head of a slain Syrian soldier.

"That’s my boy!" he reportedly captioned the image.

The new vetting would ban anyone who engages “in bigotry, honour killings, violence against women, or who persecute other religions, or who oppress members of one race, one gender, or sexual orientation,” according to a summary of the plan.

2 kids die in grenade mishap in Swat Valley
Two children were killed and another critically wounded in an accidental grenade explosion near Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Swat Valley on Sunday, officials said.

The children of a shepherd family were playing in a mountainous village in Buner district when they found the hand grenade and accidentally set it off, local government official Zariful Maani told AFP.

The two brothers, aged nine and 10, died, while their seven-year-old female cousin is in critical condition, Maani said.

Another local government official, Aizaz Ahmad, confirmed the details.

School-going children remain caught up in the years-long conflict between security forces and militants in the region following a Taliban insurgency in the area since 2007.

In the beginning of 2007, Taliban militants led by Maulana Fazlullah, now central chief of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) took control of the Swat district and waged a campaign of attacking schools, killing policemen, and beheading opponents.

However, Pakistani officials say that Fazlullah fled to Afghanistan during an offensive the military launched in 2009. Despite the operation, the Taliban targeted schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai in 2012.

Shaboobs vow to fight new Somali government
Careful with that feather -- you almost knocked me over!
Al Shabaab has vowed to continue the fight against the weak western-backed Federal government of Somalia in Mogadishu, as a new president set to take office next week.

Al Shabaab has on Sunday paraded 800 new fighters in the southern town of Jilib, where The Al Qaeda-linked militant group leaders have repeated their commitment to wage the war.

The militant commanders, speaking to hundreds of newly trained fighters and dozens of residents at a square in Jilib, said they will attack the new government’s installations.

Despite losing large ground, Al Shabaab has been waging war against Somali government and the African Union forces in the country for nearly a decade.

A new President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo is expected to be inaugurated next week, after his election last Wednesday by the MPs of Federal parliament in Mogadishu.

Calhoun College: Yale to drop John C's name
[Al Jazeera] After years of protests, Yale University has announced that it will change the name of a residential college that honoured a 19th century white male supremacist and ardent supporter of slavery.

The US university said on Saturday it would rename Calhoun College after Grace Hopper College, a female Yale alumnus who invented a pioneering computer programming language and became a Navy rear admiral.

Yale said it was the final decision in a controversy over former US Vice President John C. Calhoun's legacy that had simmered for years and boiled over with campus protests in 2015.

Yippie: Turkey has no intention of staying in Syria
Turkish troops will not remain in Syria once the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is defeated and they will leave the lands to their “true owners,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said, while vowing to advance the ongoing Euphrates Shield operation to Raqqa after al-Bab.

“Just like Jarablus, al-Rai, Dabiq were cleaned [of ISIL] and the locals returned, al-Bab will be cleared and the people of al-Bab will resettle there,” Erdoğan told reporters in Istanbul on Feb. 12 before departing for an official trip to Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Stressing that Turkey aims to establish a “terrorist-free zone” in the region, he said the Euphrates Shield operation aims to eventually head to Manbij and Raqqa after the al-Bab offensive.

“After removing Deash, the YPG [Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units] and the PYD [the Syrian-Kurdish Democratic Union Party] from the region and getting Deash out of Raqqa, it will be too much of a luxury for us to say there. But it is currently too early to talk about such issues,” Erdoğan said, using an Arabic acronym for ISIL.

“There will be no stop after al-Bab. There might be a problem of communication there. The capital of Deash is not al-Bab, but Raqqa. The ultimate goal is to cleanse a 5,000-square-km area,” he added.

Turkish troops and its Free Syrian Army (FSA) allies has entered center of al-Bab town in northern Syria, Erdoğan noted, adding that fall of the jihadist group’s last stronghold in the northern province of Aleppo is “a matter of time.”

“Al-Bab is now besieged from all fronts. Our forces have entered the city center at the moment. They have captured the most important point, the hospital hill. From now on the Deash forces are in the process of entirely leaving al-Bab. I think the rest is a matter of time,” he stated.

even if erdogan has imperialist ambitions, his military machine isn't up to it - partly because of his own successful purge of officers with Galenist connections or with anti Islamist sympathies or others who were just in the way and partly because he needs to keep lot of troops in Turkey to watch the Kurds and any anti Erdogan groups

Turkey has lost a half dozen tanks in Syria already and about a hundred troops so far.

124 ISIS troops die in Syrian rebel Raqqa operation
[ARA News] Raqqa – The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Sunday announced the liberation of 98 villages in the eastern countryside of Raqqa, after clashes with Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants.

“Our forces have liberated 98 villages in an area measuring approximately 700 square kilometers in Eastern Raqqa. The progress comes as part of the Third Phase of the Euphrates Wrath Operation launched nine days ago,” SDF spokeswoman Cihan Ehmed said.

At least 124 ISIS militants were killed and dozens more wounded in the recent clashes, according to military sources.

“Our specialized teams have also dismantled 1256 landmines in the liberated areas,” Cihan said.

The SDF has also seized a large deal of ammunition and weapons from ISIS during the campaign for Eastern Raqqa.

During the first phase of Euphrates Wrath, which began on November 6, 2016, the SDF liberated roughly 560 km² in Northern Raqqa.

On 10 December, the SDF launched the second phase of the Euphrates Wrath, during which it captured over 2500 km² in Western Raqqa. The polyethnic alliance also confirmed that they had cleared 196 villages and dozens of farms.

On 4 February, the Syrian Democratic Forces announced the launch of the third phase of Euphrates Wrath Operation in Eastern Raqqa.

The campaign is ultimately aimed at isolating the ISIS radical group in its de facto capital.

Houthis targeting civilians
New York- A United Nations organization issued a statement Saturday expressing the looming danger facing Yemeni civilians as coup militias purposefully target civilians in key port city Mokha in retaliation to an offensive to free the coastal area from insurgency hold.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights has documented cases in which the civilians were prevented from leaving their homes to escape the bombing, as militia sniper launched fire on those who tried to flee the clashes.

A spokesman for the United Nations Office for Human Rights, Rupert Colville, said in a press statement “civilians were trapped during the Mokha fighting, and there are real fears that the situation will repeat itself in Hodeida, where air strikes are already escalating”.

The new U.N. report revealed that Iran-aligned Houthi militants and loyalists backing the ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh have evidently used civilians as human shields in Mokha west of Taiz – the report condemned these deeds.

In light of the continued fighting and moving the battles to the north of Hodeidah, the U.N. agency wary of a repeat of the targeting of civilians there, and warns of the aggravation of the continuing tragedy since more than two years.

Over 34 thousand civilians have been forcibly displaced by the intense fighting across coastal areas and Taiz enclaves, in the Yemeni Highlands, and adjacent areas such as Hodeidah, Yemen’s fourth largest city.

Hamas explosives expert behind armor-piercing rocket
[JEWISHPRESS] The Izz a-Din al-Qassam military wing of the Hamas terrorist organization has announced that the terrorist killed in last week’s “work accident” in Gaza, 37-year-old Mohammad al-Kuka, was actually a high-ranking explosives expert.
Golly. I feel so... apathetic.
Al-Kuka, it turns out, was responsible for having developed an armor-piercing missile that was used during the 2014 counter terror war between Israel and Hamas, Operation Protective Edge.
With how much success?
According to Hamas, the missile is an upgraded version of a Russian anti-tank rocket, similar to an RPG with a tandem charge. It has a 500-meter range.

Two fugitives killed in shootout with police near Cairo: Interior ministry
[AlAhram] Egyptian police potted two runaways in a shootout after raiding their hideout in Badr city on the outskirts of Cairo, the interior ministry said on Sunday.

The ministry said in a statement that security forces were pursuing one of the two runaways who was sentenced to life in prison by a military court after being convicted of planting an bomb at a cop shoppe in Assiut governorate in Upper Egypt.

The suspect was also accused in two ongoing cases involving planting an bomb and being a member of a terrorist group.

The ministry said that the two suspects fired on police as they closed in on their hideout, leading to a shootout.

"The runaway suspect was planning an attack against vital and important targets," the statement added.

Lawyer rules out Russia's possible extradition of Snowden to U.S.
[NEWS.XINHUANET] It has been reported that Russia is considering sending Edward Snowden back to the United States as a "gift" to U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, but Snowden's lawyer here on Saturday denied those reports, calling them "speculations."

Anatoly Kucherena told Russia's state-owned news agency TASS that he doesn't see any reasons for Snowden's extradition.

"Those are certain speculations, which come from the so-called sources of the U.S. intelligence services," Kucherena said, adding Snowden has a residency permit in Russia and observes all Russian laws.

He made it clear that Russia is not trading people, saying "At no level -- be it economic or political -- the topic of Snowden could be a subject of trade."

The first report came from NBC News, which on Friday stated that U.S. intelligence sources have obtained information that says Russia may hand Snowden over in order to win favor with the new U.S. president.

Trump in the past has described Snowden as a "total traitor" and a "spy" who should be executed.

The U.S. whistleblower quickly responded to the NBC report by tweeting that the reported extradition plan vindicates his claim that he is not a spy for Russia because "no country trades away spies."

#1  Four possibles:

1. Somebody in Langley decided to go rogue

2. Somebody at Foggy Bottom talked with somebody at Langley and decided it was 'newsworthy'.

3. Snowden's people broached it as a trial balloon.

4. Fake news.

Given the Russian response, the first two seem more likely. If so cleaning-house at both these places cannot come fast enough.

Afghanistan
US and Afghan troops reportedly kill 22 'human shields' in anti-Taliban operation
[ABC.NET.AU] Afghan officials and local residents say 22 civilians, mostly women and kiddies, were killed during a joint operation carried out by US and Afghan forces last week in the southern Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province.

The presidential envoy for security in Helmand, Jabar Qahraman, said the raid against Taliban bully boyz in the Sangin district killed 13 people from one family and nine from another.

"We are saddened to hear the news of civilians being killed," he said.

"When the Taliban use civilians as their shield against security forces, such incidents occur."

US Navy Captain Bill Salvin, a military front man, said: "We are working diligently to determine whether non-combatants were killed or injured as a result of US air strikes [carried out to support Afghan forces in and around Sangin]."

The investigation is "continuing and has not reached any conclusions", he added in a written statement.

The UN mission in Afghanistan meanwhile expressed "grave concern" at the violence in Helmand, saying its initial inquiries suggest air strikes by international forces killed at least 18 civilians, "nearly all women and kiddies".

Hameed Gul, a local resident, said he lost nine members of his family, including his mother and sister, in Thursday's raid.

"It's all lie that they were attacking the Taliban," he said.

Kareem Atal, the head of the provincial council in Helmand, said a man, two women and two children who were maimed in the raid have been brought to scenic provincial capital Lashkar Gah for treatment.

Helmand has seen months of heavy fighting between Afghan forces and the Taliban, who have repeatedly attacked Lashkar Gah.

Refugees cross to Canada to escape Donald Trump
Why not just get in the car and drive? It would have been much more comfortable... Oh, yes. The Secret Police.
[Al Jazeera] For five hours, Somalis Farhan Ahmed and Mohammed Mualim trekked through the barren and frigid snow-swept fields dividing North Dakota from the Canadian prairies. The snow was knee-deep and it was nearly -20 degrees Celsius.
The Brutal Dakota Winter®...
Then, out of the darkness, a highway appeared. They had arrived in Canada.
"Hurrah, hoser!"
One of them pulled out their mobile phone to call 911.
... or a cab.
"Wow, it was very, very cold," Ahmed, 36, recalled. "You could not walk about the ice. It was too much. Sometimes, it reached our knees. We didn't feel sometimes our hands, sometimes our feet."
Shoulda brought yer snow shoes.
Hours earlier, Ahmed, Mualim, and three other African men paid a man $500 to drive them from Minneapolis, Minnesota to North Dakota, just three miles south of the Canadian border. They were underdressed for the winter temperatures, wearing only light gloves and spring jackets.
They were totally unprepared because Minnesota, as everyone knows, doesn't have winter. I'm still curious why they didn't just spend the $500 on a plane ticket to Vancouver?
"Sometimes, you cannot walk because the snow is very big - sometimes above your knees," Mualim, 28, explained.
But anything to escape Trump. Bet they wished for a little Global Warming, eh?

ISIS shooters kill Kurd officer in Qamishli
[ARA News] Spokesman of the Kurdish Asayish forces in Syria’s Qamishli, Ali Hassan, confirmed on Sunday that an IED killed an Asayish officer and injured two others.

An explosion in the Iskenderuna Square in al-Khalij neighborhood in Syria’s northeastern Qamishli city (Qamişlo) hit a Kurdish Asayish patrol at 8:35, and resulted in the death of one Asayish officer and the injury of two others.

Local sources accused the Islamic State (ISIS) of being behind the attack. However, the group has not yet claimed the attack.

This is not the first attack that claimed the lives of Asayish members. On 9 January, Asayish officer Qehraman Omari was killed in a similar IED attack in Qamishli city.

Moreover, in an ISIS attack in July 2016 at least 50 people were killed in two separate bombings.

In December 2015, an ISIS bombing claimed the lives of at least 16 civilians in a Christian district of Qamishli.

Iraq
Mosul Offensive News

ISIS chemical bomb expert dies in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State militant, the group’s chlorine bombs expert, was killed mysteriously in western Mosul as the group builds up defenses anticipating a security offensive.

Reports quoted a local source in Nineveh as saying that the so-nicknamed Abu Yaha al-Iraqi, 44, was killed near his residence in Islah al-Zeraie district in “mysterious circumstances”. He was referred to as the “engineer” of the group’s chlorine bombs.

“Al-Iraqi’s family had disappeared before his death,” the source said, noting that the fact adds to the mystery around his killers. The group was unmoved by his death, which makes it possible that its members were the perpetrators, as he put it.

IS lost the eastern section of Mosul to Iraqi government forces on January 24th after three months of battles that left at least 3000 of its fighters dead.

Since security operations launched to retake Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and IS’s largest stronghold, the group has been ravaged with both combat losses and internal divisions. There had been several reports of infighting and assassinations of senior group figures, while others told of executions of delinquent fighters.

Iraqi forces are awaiting higher orders to carry on with an invasion of the group’s strongholds in the west.

Kurd forces attack ISIS HQ in western Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Media Official of Peshmerga forces in Sinjar District announced on Saturday, that the Kurdish forces attacked strongholds and headquarters of the Islamic State in the area.

Khalil Shafan said in a press statement, “Kurdish Peshmerga forces attacked three headquarters of the Islamic State in Rambousi Village and Telskuf area.”

“There is no accurate information about the group’s losses,” Shafan added.

“The Kurdish forces are targeting all movements of the Islamic State’s militants in the area,” Shafan explained.

“Last night, Peshmerga forces located members of the Islamic State in the areas of al-Baaj and al-Balij, where the militants were trying to flee toward Syria,” he further added.

Shafan also declared that the Kurdish security forces are waiting for President of Kurdistan Region, Masoud Barzani’s orders to liberate the remaining areas of Sinjar from the Islamic State’s control.

Coalition warbirds hit ISIS positions in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Nineveh Operations Command announced on Sunday, that the international coalition warplanes attacked important locations of the Islamic state in western Mosul.

Commander of Nineveh Operations Command, Major General Najim al-Jabouri, said in a press statement, “The US-led coalition attacked strategic locations of the Islamic State group in western Mosul,” adding that, “Elite Arab and foreign leaders of the Islamic State were killed by the air strike.”

Jabouri also pointed out that the coalition warplanes also bombarded caches of weapons, rockets and explosives, belonging to the Islamic State in al-Zira’i area in Mosul, as well as bombing medical laboratories belonging to the group.

5 die in ISIS artillery attacks in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A member of Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service declared on Sunday, that dozens of civilians and security members were either killed or wounded by drone and booby-trapped vehicle attacks launched by the Islamic State on eastern and south of Mosul.

Major Ali Mohsen said in a press statement, “The Islamic State bombed the areas of al-Shaimaa, al-Moalmeen, Nabi Yunus, al-Mithaq and al-Sediq, using drones.”

“The Islamic State bombardment resulted in the killing of five persons, including two security members, as well as wounding others,” Mohsen added.

Meanwhile, the Islamic State launched another attack, using a booby-trapped vehicle, on south of Mosul.

Police Captain Mohamed Abdel Karim said, “A booby-trapped vehicle, driven by a suicide bomber, targeted a Federal Police headquarters in al-Arbaj Village in Hamam al-Alil, south of Mosul, followed by another attack launched by dozens of militants on the same area.”

“Security forces repulsed the attack that lasted for more than an hour, and forces the Islamic State militants to flee,” he explained.

“The attacks resulted in the killing of one officer and the injury of six soldiers, as well as destroying two vehicles, while five members of the Islamic State were killed, and a vehicle belonging to the group was destroyed, in addition to seizing 11 light and medium weapons” Abdel Karim further added.

Furthermore, Abdel Karim pointed out that the Islamic State group was trying to impose its control on the headquarters, and then advance toward other locations.

Hundreds of Colombians cross border into Venezuela to flee violence
[NEWS.XINHUANET] The President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro claimed Sunday that a large wave of Colombians were entering Venezuela in order to "flee violence" in their own country.

Speaking during his weekly TV show, "In contact with Maduro," the president said "we are receiving this massive migration, a product of the continuing civil war and violence in Colombia. Yesterday, 359 people were registered at a single border crossing on the Colombia-Venezuela border."

Maduro also said he had ordered the governor of the northeastern state of Zulia, Francisco Arias Cardenas, to take all necessary measures as the border with Colombia "is very long and the situation could worsen."

Could This Be The 1st Step In The Impeachment Process? Democrat Files 'Resolution of Inquiry' on Trump
[ThRoot] A senior member of the House Judiciary Committee introduced a Resolution of Inquiry on Thursday that directs the Department of Justice to provide the House of Representatives with any and all information relevant to an inquiry into President Trump and his associates’ conflicts of interest, ethical violations (including the Emoluments Clause), and Russia ties.
I've been having a conversation on Facebook with a true believer. She honestly thinks that the Congress will impeach and remove Trump. I keep pointing out that the Pubs distracted themselves for eight years by thinking that any day now they'd impeach Champ. How'd that work out? And impeaching Bush. We did impeach Clinton, and what did we get for that? So go ahead, I told her, work yourself to the bone in an effort to impeach Trump. I certainly can use the entertainment.
The House Judiciary Committee has 14 days to debate and vote on whether the resolution Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) introduced should be introduced to the floor, and if it does not do so within that 14-day period, then the resolution can be brought to the floor in front of the full house for a vote.
Republican committee head: "Utter nonsense -- file in the circular file, and let's get in with the next confirmation."
According to the Washington Post, Nadler is "dusting off a little-used legislative tool to force a committee debate or floor vote on an issue."
"All in favour of filing in the circular file say, "Aye."
"AYE!"
"All opposed say "Nay."
"Nay."
"The ayes have it. The next item on the committee agenda is the next confirmation."
More from the Washington Post:

Nadler’s resolution asks Attorney General Jeff Sessions to provide "copies of any document, record, memo, correspondence, or other communication of the Department of Justice" that pertains to any "criminal or counterintelligence investigation" into Trump, his White House team or certain campaign associates; any investment made by a foreign power or agent thereof in Trump’s businesses; Trump’s plans to distance himself from his business empire; and any Trump-related examination of federal conflict of interest laws or the emoluments clause of the Constitution.

The full text of Nadler’s resolution can be read here.

Nadler is the No. 2-ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, and he said that the move came after Democrats sent two letters to Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), one on Nov. 30, 2016 and a second on Jan. 24, 2017, and another letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) asking for investigations into Trump’s financial entanglements.

"All of this demands investigation, and of course they’ve refused," Nadler said Thursday at the House Democrats’ annual policy retreat here. "This resolution will force them to confront the issue."

, New York, North Carolina and South Carolina, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials confirmed Saturday.

Among them 161 arrests were made in Los Angeles and some 200 in Atlanta, said local media reports. The authorities didn't reveal the total number of the arrests.

Gillian Christensen, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, said the crackdown was part of "routine" immigration enforcement actions.

A majority of those detained were serious criminals, including some who were convicted of murder and domestic violence, she said.

"We're talking about people who are threats to public safety or a threat to the integrity of the immigration system," she said.

However,

Trump’s Immigration Raids Have Arrived in New York City

[OBSERVER] Make the Road New York, an immigrant advocacy group, told the media this evening that Immigration and Customs Enforcement sweeps on Staten Island netted five Mexican nationals in the past week and a half--coinciding with similar actions across the nation.

The raids took place on February 2, February 3, February 5 and February 8, according to speakers on the press call. All five individuals taken by ICE officers were male, and four of them have children who are U.S. citizens, the group reported.

Make the Road believes several of the men are now in New Jersey detention centers

Obama PACs Bus Protesters To GOP Town Halls
[DailyCaller] Political action committees that fundraised for President Barrack Obama during the 2012 presidential election, bused protesters to Republican town hall events nationwide earlier in February, according to a Sunday report from The Washington Post.

Democrats nationwide continue to search for ways to oppose President Donald Trump after the 2016 election, and they are digging deep into funding from years ago. An unnamed pro-Obama super PAC organized protests at several town halls, going so far as busing protesters outside the member’s districts.

Since super PACS were legalized in the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision, this marks the first time that money raised to elect one president was used to undermine another. The town hall protests largely opposed the executive order that limited travel from seven nations identified as potential sources of terrorism.

Former staffers of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton are also pouncing on the opportunity. The Center for American Progress, operated by Clinton advisor Neera Tanden, worked with pro-Obama groups in February to encourage Democrats to oppose Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Jason Chaffetz and Dave Brat, at several town halls.

"What’s organizing people is that they’re fearing for the country they grew up in," Tanden told the Post. "People are definitely seeing the purpose of working through the political process to oppose."

It will take a sustained effort to keep voters motivated until the 2018 mid-term elections, especially considering the fact that neither Obama nor Clinton were able to motivate voters to the polls in November. Several groups that were largely assumed to drive votes for Democrats, like black or young female voters, either didn’t turn out to vote, or voted for Trump in larger numbers than early polling suggested.

Despite the united action by former staffers, the leadership of the Democratic party is split in a continued battle as the progressive wing fights the establishment for control. Nowhere is that fight more visible than in the election for chair of the Democratic National Convention.

Progressives like Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren back Rep. Keith Ellison for the chair, but former vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine openly endorsed former Labor Secretary Tom Perez. The traditional activist wing of the Democratic Party, the highly influential labor unions, remained divided on which candidate will better support their interests.
It's all fun and games until somebody gets hurt. Long martyrs.

How the Ruling of the Ninth Circus Court Could Backfire on Liberals Big Time
[DailyHeadlines] Liberals and illegal aliens as well as jihadists are cheering the ruling from the Ninth Circus Court of Appeals. This is not surprising considering the fact that liberals never anticipate the consequences of their actions. This one could bite them in the ass.

In order to stop President Trump’s travel ban, the court had to rule that the president does not have the power to decide on who can and can’t get into the country and who can and cannot stay. They ruled that Trump does not have that power. But if Trump doesn’t have that power, neither did Barack Obama, meaning all of his various amnesty Executive Orders are null and void. Say, for instance DACA for the so called Dreamers.

Obama had the Dreamers register which is convenient because they will be easy to find and deport and if they are still living with their parents, the parents can be deported, too. The work permits given to other illegal aliens will also become vulnerable and there is a database on them also. All it would take is an EO from President Trump to that effect.

The more likely scenario if Trump and his administration were to go that way would be for the Supreme Court to agree to an emergency hearing based on the fact that the actions allowed by the 9th would be irreversible. At that point, one of two things would happen. Either the liberal justices would have to reverse their positions on votes they took during the Obama caliphate that gave him sole responsibility in making immigration decisions or they would have to uphold their previous rulings, effectively killing the 9th Circuit’s ruling.

The thing that may shock you if you haven’t followed SCOTUS decisions closely is that while Ginsberg and Sotomayor would have no problem disregarding the law, the swing vote that could lead to a 5-3 ruling in the court is the Obama appointee, Elena Kagan, who has ruled against Obama in some cases. She votes liberal but seems to resist voting that way when it’s a direct violation of the law.

Look for Trump to do two things. He will dump the justice department lawyers who (intentionally?) blew the case before the 9th Circus Court by not giving the judges the 24 names of terrorists who came from the 7 countries under the travel ban. Secondly, he will have them petition SCOTUS to lift the stay imposed by the 9th.

Let the games begin.

#3  Fairly good discussion of the case at National Review.

Legal Insurrection says "This legal dispute no longer is just about the Executive Order. Democrats have made clear that they will fight in court over almost everything the Trump administration does. The 9th Circuit has opened the door to this tactic on an issue that goes to the core of presidential authority."
If the Courts are to designate themselves the functional directors of the Department of Homeland Security, then such mandate must come from the Supreme Court, not the 9th Circuit.

Better install Gorsuch ASAP and even at that SCOTUS decisions are iffy--Alito and Thomas are about the only votes you can count on to follow the Constitution.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Turmoil grows over White House correspondents' dinner
[YAHOO] It is supposed to be a light-hearted gathering of journalists, celebrities and the president, where differences are put aside for good-natured jibes.
Probably they'll just invite Obama instead. Pretend it's eight years ago.
But amid a bitter war of words between the Trump administration and the Fourth Estate, plans for the 2017 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in April have been thrown into turmoil.
Nerd prom no more!
After President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's repeated barbs against the "dishonest media" and "fake news," some journalists and media outlets are thinking twice about their participation in the April 29 dinner, a tradition that dates back to 1921.

"How can media clink glasses with a White House that makes clear its contempt for press freedom and its admiration for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin methods?" tweeted David Frum, a senior editor at The Atlantic.
I dunno, Dave, how'd you manage all those past dinners?
The association, which organizes the annual event that raises money for journalism scholarships, said the dinner will be held as planned.

The White House has indicated it is on Trump's calendar -- despite some doubts about whether he will attend.

Opinion editor Robert Schlesinger of US News & World Report said that regardless of what Trump does, "the media should boycott the dinner."
Sure. Go ahead. It's not like anyone outside Washington will notice, let alone care.
"News organizations should buy tickets as usual (it's for a good cause) but make other plans that night and if he does attend, let the ratings- and crowd-obsessed narcissist freak address an empty ballroom," Schlesinger wrote.

Home Front: WoT
Republican calls CAIR a Hamas-linked 'terrorist group'
[Al Jazeera] A US congressional candidate has become the latest politician to label the country's largest Moslem rights group a "terrorist" organization.

Republican Josh Mandel, who is also Ohio treasurer, claimed on Wednesday that the Council on America-Islamic Relations (CAIR
...designated a terrorist group by the UAE...
) "is Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,".

Mandel posted an article on social media in reference to the Paleostinian faction that controls the Gazoo Strip.

America's largest Moslem rights organization, CAIR:

While many have accused CAIR of being a front for such disparate groups as Hezbollah and Hamas - gangs in the Middle East with vastly different ideologies - no firm proof has ever been produced to support these claims.

Nihad Awad, CAIR's executive director, said in 1994 that he supported Hamas' social programmes more than those of the Paleostinian Liberation Organisation during a talk on the situation in the occupied Paleostinian territories.

He rejected "radical" elements within the group.

Hamas took credit for its first suicide kaboom in April 1994, and wasn't labelled a "terrorist organization" by the US state department until 1997 .

The group has since discontinued suicide kabooms.

Awad disavowed Hamas in 2006. "My position and CAIR's position is extremely clear: We condemn suicide kabooms. We are mainstream American Moslems," he said.

The caption read: "If Council on American Islamic Relations is for it, it is probably bad for America. What a horrible organization."

A day later, he said on Twitter that CAIR also had ties to the Moslem Brüderbund.

His comments follow Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz's announcement of the "Moslem Brüderbund (MB) Terrorist Designation Act", which aims to label the Islamic political, religious and social movement, founded in Egypt in 1928 and active across the Moslem world, as a threat to national security.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Turkish president: Islamic State's ouster from al-Bab immiment
[UPI] Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
declared Sunday that the capture of al-Bab from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
is is just a "matter of time" and clears the way for the takeover of Raqqa.

Erodgan told news hounds Turkish troops and their Syrian rebel allies entered the center of al-Bab and intend to clear a "safe zone" of 1,930 square miles. al-Bab is the last urban stronghold of Islamic State in Aleppo province and is 110 miles from Raqqa.

"After al-Bab is about to be over, the period following that will be Manbij and Raqqa," Erdogan told journalists before his departure from Istanbul on official visits to Bahrain, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. Tahrir al-Sham: Al-Qaeda's latest incarnation in Syria
[BBC] The Syrian jihadist group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham
...formerly al-Nusra, the current false nose and mustache of al-Qaeda in the Levant...
(JFS), known as al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front until it broke off formal ties with al-Qaeda last July, has merged with four smaller Syrian factions and rebranded itself as "Tahrir al-Sham".

The new group's leader has been named as Hashim al-Sheikh, who previously served as the head of the powerful Islamist rebel group, Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
Ahrar al-Sham itself has refused to join the new body and has been at loggerheads with JFS in northern Syria.

On 9 February, al-Sheikh delivered the group's first leadership message in which he insisted the new entity was independent and not an extension of former organizations and factions.

By reinventing itself again, JFS appears to be trying to distance itself from its al-Qaeda past and embed itself more deeply within the Syrian insurgency.

No mention has been made of JFS leader Abu Mohammed al-Julani in any of the new group's communications. But he is widely believed to be serving as its military commander.
'Full merger'

JFS announced the creation of "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" (which translates in English as Liberation of Levant Organisation) in a statement that was released on 28 January via its channel on the messaging app Telegram.

The statement indicated that the groups which had agreed to join would dissolve themselves and "merge fully" into the new entity.

This was further reiterated in al-Shaikh's recent message which described the new body as a "melting pot for all factions".

In addition to JFS, Tahrir al-Sham founding groups included: Nur al-Din Zinki Movement (one of the most important opposition factions in Aleppo); jihadist Ansar al-Din Front; the Homs-based Jaysh al-Sunnah; and Liwa al-Haqq (operates in Idlib, Aleppo and Hamah).

The new entity also received the endorsement of six prominent Syria-based jihadist clerics, including the charismatic Saudi-born Abdullah al-Muhaisini. The clerics signed a separate statement announcing their intention to join Tahrir al-Sham.

Since the creation of the new entity, JFS has issued no new propaganda under the JFS brand, suggesting that it has been dissolved.

Europe
Juncker: Britain may divide EU over Brexit talks
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he fears Britain will divide the European Union’s 27 remaining members by making different promises to each country during its Brexit negotiations.

“The other EU 27 don’t know it yet, but the Brits know very well how they can tackle this,” Juncker told Deutschlandfunk radio. “They could promise country A this, country B that and country C something else and the end game is that there is not a united European front.”
Don't worry, Jean-Claude, you'll still have your phony-baloney job when the dust settles...
Britain will by the end of March trigger formal divorce talks with the EU, a major test for the bloc which is struggling to have a grip on other challenges like keeping Greece in the euro zone, the refugee crisis and the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president.

To add to all of that, the Netherlands, France and Germany are holding general elections this year, in which populist anti-EU parties are expected to make strong showings.
Wonder why?
“Now everyone is saying in relation to Trump and Brexit: ‘Now is Europe’s big chance. Now is the time to close ranks and march together,’” Juncker said in the radio interview which will be aired on Sunday. “I wish it will be like this, but will it happen? I have some doubt. Because the Brits will manage without big effort to divide the remaining 27 member states.”
The Brits are good at doing that. It's how they managed to win a bunch of wars the past 400 years...
His warning echoed remarks by German Chancellor Angela Merkel at an EU summit in Bratislava last year aimed at finding a way forward after Britain’s vote to leave, that the bloc is in a critical situation.

Juncker said one area where the remaining 27 could improve cooperation was defense. Britain and France are the only EU countries with nuclear arsenals.
Jean-Claude, doesn't the EU have a defense force? I seem to recall the French and Germans having something like a combined force. Add in the Belgian heavy barbers. That's what you had in mind, right?
Juncker, who will host U.S. Vice President Mike Pence in Brussels next weekend, said a protectionist trade policy by the Trump administration would be an opportunity for the EU to forge new trade alliances.

“It would be a change that we have to use,” Juncker said. “And we should not allow the Brits to pursue trade deals now with others because they are not allowed to do so.”
Try and stop them...
He added that as long as Britain was in the bloc, the European Commission was in charge of negotiating trade deals.

Germany arrests suspected member of Afghanistan's Taliban
[FOXNEWS] German authorities have incarcerated

a suspected member of Afghanistan's Taliban who is accused of taking part in an attack in which an American soldier was killed.

Federal prosecutors say the 20-year-old Afghan national, identified only as Abdol S. in keeping with German privacy rules, was arrested in Bavaria on Wednesday.

Prosecutors said Thursday that the suspect joined the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2013 and was trained to use an AK-47 assault rifle and hand grenades.

They say that, in 2013 and 2014, he participated at least twice in fighting against Afghan government troops and U.S. soldiers.

According to prosecutors, a U.S. soldier was killed and two others maimed during one of the attacks.

The Taliban have been waging an insurgency against Afghanistan's U.S.-backed government for over 15 years.

Top military officer among 12 soldiers killed in attack
At least 12 soldiers, including two high-ranking commanders were killed, and several injured in a deadly gun and bomb attack by Al shabaab in Southern Somalia on Sunday.

Two commander, among them Mohamed Hassan Bakay died in a remote-controlled land mine blast targeted their convoy on the road linking Afgoye to Wanlaweyn town, source said. The military officials were heading to Tihsile village as reinforcement to Somali troops during clashes with the Al Qaeda-linked Al shabaab fighters, according to a senior regional official.

Sunday’s attack was the deadliest on the country’s army since the new President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo was elected by the Somali MPs last Wednesday, February 8 in Mogadishu.

Stephen Miller's bushels of Pinocchios for false voter-fraud claims
[WashingtonPost, which has its own problems with truth] White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller appeared on ABC's "The Week" on Sunday, spouting a bunch of false talking points on alleged voter fraud. (He also repeated similar claims on other Sunday talk shows.) To his credit, host George Stephanopoulus repeatedly challenged Miller, noting that he had provided no evidence to support his claims. But Miller charged ahead, using the word "fact" three times in a vain effort to bolster his position.

The White House continues to provide zero evidence to back up its claims of voter fraud. Officials instead retreat to the same bogus talking points that have been repeatedly shown to be false.

The move he was elaborating targets not only IS elements in Raqqa, but the Syrian Kurdish militia, which The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Syrian regime forces have been approaching towards al-Bab from the south since Feb. 6 and they were a few kilometers away from the town at the weekend.

Syrian regime forces advanced to Tadef town near al-Bab, which is located in Aleppo province's northeast, and destroyed IS stronghold, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

The move brings the Syrian army to the demarcation line drawn to keep the rival forces apart over an agreement between Ankara and Moscow.

Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacuated
I certainly hope no brown smelt are harmed.
[SACBEE] The Butte County Sheriff’ Office released the following statement on Facebook:

This is an evacuation order.

Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.
"And this time - no ark."
A hazardous situation is developing with the Oroville Dam auxiliary spillway. Operation of the auxiliary spillway has lead to severe erosion that could lead to a failure of the structure. Failure of the auxiliary spillway structure will result in an uncontrolled release of flood waters from Lake Oroville. In response to this developing situation, DWR is increasing water releases to 100,000 cubic feet per second.

Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.

This in NOT A Drill. This in NOT A Drill. This in NOT A Drill.

Chris Orrock, a front man for the Department of Water Resources, told The Bee the failure happened as the bottom of the emergency spillway began to erode.

"It happened quickly," he said.

Sutter County also put out an alert on Facebook:

We have received information about the potential for increased flows in the Feather River of as much as 100,000 cubic feet per second. We are gathering as much information as possible and will be providing additional information as soon as it is verified.

#21  That's an awful lot of hydro-electricity going to waste.

It seems the dam is used for pumped electricity storage. I wonder how recently it was used for this, and how much the water level was increased.

#22  Unlike conventional power systems, renewable power isn't matched to demand, and there are frequent large surpluses. Which get 'stored' in pumped hydro dams like this one. It would not surprise me if this was a contributing cause of the current situation.

#23  The delta smelt will get their fair share, right? That's the most important thing. /sarcasm

#24  When the dam washes away, does that mean the drought is over?

#25  If it keeps on raining, the levee's going to break...

#27  Rantburgers, while I appreciate the opportunity to poke fun at the incompetent government of California, this is a problem.

The first picture in this news article shows the real an imminent danger to the damn dam.

The erosion on emergency spillway is about 50 feet from busting the dam. This erosion was due to less than a day of use. That means 100 feet of water on Oroville, and 10 on Yuba City.

It is going to rain 4" in two days. This thing is an unequivocal emergency situation. Every single truck in California needs to be putting rocks and fill into this hole. Right now. If the water ever gets up over the emergency spillway before it is filled, there are just a few hours before something like a cubic kilometer of water comes down stream. And 50 more if the dam itself is compromised by further erosion.

Keep these unfortunate folks in your prayers.

#28  This is red state part of CA, not that it should make any difference. Been tracking this since Friday. It has not been fun, nor funny in the least.

This has been handled very professionally. Support is important right now

#29  One Fire truck can pump 1,000 gallons a minute. Some trucks more. That is 60,000 gallons an hour.

Every fire department in the region should send at least one truck to the area as mutual aid in getting as much water out of that body of water behind the dam as possible.

Pumpers (what firemen call their trucks) should stay during the two day rain continuously pumping.

This is something only firemen know about so people should get the word out about this approach.
