#3 The Syrians do not know how this weapon - which appears to have been manufactured as long ago as 1989 - made its way from the US to the hands of their country's Salafist tough guys - but it would not be difficult for the Americans to find out. Its full computer coding reads: DOT-E7694 NRC6400/11109/M1033 79294 ASSY 39317 MFR 54080.

A battery tube from another missile fired on the fourth of last month carries an inscription indented in the metal: "132964 Battery thermal MFG DATE 12/90 LOT No (indecipherable numeral then 912 S/N 005959."

Um, no. AFAIK, there is no such thing as a "heat seeking" missile that can be fired by guys on the ground, unless we're talking about a Stinger - and from those dates, it's extremely unlikely that a Stinger that old would still be functional. No burn marks or othere explosive trauma on those parts says to me somebody got some random parts together and claimed they're from US weapons.

By Tom Gersbeck, page 201 figure 8.7. Google books has it online. The helium bottle pictured in the figure is a good match.
There is no sign of explosive damage or burns on the bottle from the article. Maybe they didn't arm the missile correctly.
