Bees: Why Do They Hate Us?
Via Drudge

As many as 15 adults and children are being treated for what authorities said was an attack by a swarm of yellow jackets on a Washington-area elementary school. Montgomery County Fire spokesman Pete Piringer said it happened shortly before noon at Montgomery Knolls Elementary School in Silver Spring.
Officials said the children were walking in a wooded area with adults from their day-care center when they apparently moved a log, which turned out to be the nesting spot for the yellow jackets. That got the yellow jackets buzzing, and before everyone could escape, 11 of the 15 children were stung, along with three adults.
According to Piringer, the children range in age from 3 to 5 years old. Three of the children were stung repeatedly and had reactions. Eight others were stung once or twice. All 11 children were taken to Holy Cross Hospital to be checked out.
Now, what have we learned today, children?

#4  When I worked at a copper mine in NW Alaska in the late 60s, we had a big, mean yellojacket nest right near the door of the blasting cap shed. Needless to say that many countermeasure options were discarded as clever and diabolical, but impractical and downright dangerous.

We finally hosed them down with Blazo (white gas, naptha) on a foggy day (high humidity). The gas soaked into the nest and ruined their day. Even after we removed the nest, dozens of those that were gone during the raid came buzzing around, saying "WTF?"

I've been hit by a mud dauber wasp in Ohio. It was no honeybee sting, I can tell you that (the only time I ever leapt 6 feet straight up over a bridge embankment wondering what had happened).

I was going to say that yellow jackets are members of the paper wasp family that make their nests underground, but it appears Shipman beat me to it.

Nevertheless, wasps can sting you multiple times and not die. Honeybees suicide when they sting because the stinger is barbed and the venom sac is pulled out of the bees body killing it when it tries to pull away. The venom sac continues to pump the venom into the victim through subsequent spasms.

Honeybees only sting when they have no other choice (African killer bees notwithstanding - they're exceptionally irritable) as it kills them. Wasps are natures' psychopaths - stinging on a whim - and they can keep it up all day.

Thanks,

#10  There were mud daubers all over My grandparents' place in Indiana and they never stung anyone there. The regular (reddish bodied) wasps sure did, and bees of course. Of course, maybe our "mud daubers" weren't really that and were some other kind of critter. They looked just like the stinging wasps, but were blue-black. Their nests looked like Pan-pipes made of mud.

He invited representatives from both auction houses to draw either a rock, paper or scissors on a piece of paper. Sotheby's picked paper while Christie's chose scissors.

Mr Hasiyama told the New York Times: "I sometimes use such methods when I cannot make a decision."

Man lost job for being 'dead'
A Romanian man returned from his holiday to find he had lost his job because he had been declared dead. Valentin Lefter, 20, from Focsani, said he was shocked because he'd only been away for two weeks. He returned from his summer break to find a letter from wine-bottling company Prodecam Vanatori. "The letter, addressed to my wife, apologised for my passing away and said any outstanding payments would be sent to her within the next month," said Lefter.

When he rang company bosses, they apologised and said the letter had been sent out because of a computer error.

But they said he could not have his job back because they had already employed someone in his place, reported local media.

He now plans to sue the company for £10,000.
I hate it when that happens.

Chavez: If anything happens to me, blame Bush
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says US President George W Bush will be to blame if anything happens to him.

He was speaking after US TV evangelist Pat Robertson called for his assassination in comments the US State Department said were "inappropriate".

Mr Robertson later apologised saying he was frustrated at Mr Chavez's constant accusations against Washington.

A senior representative of America's evangelical Christians says he is trying to meet Mr Chavez to apologise.

Mr Chavez said on Friday that Pat Robertson "was expressing the wishes of the US elite".

"If anything happens to me then the man responsible will be George W Bush. He will be the assassin," the Venezuelan president said at a public event. "This is pure terrorism."

Earlier, the Rev Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, said he was seeking a meeting with Mr Chavez to distance US Christians from the remarks.

He is in Mexico, where he is meeting a friend of Mr Chavez, and if all goes well he will travel on to Caracas for an encounter that we at the BBC hope could embarrass the White House.

Mr Haggard says he wants to secure assurances from Mr Chavez about the safety of American hostages evangelical missionaries working in Venezuela.

The Venezuelan government temporarily suspended permits for foreign missionaries on Friday so regulations for preachers in the country could be tightened.

"We were already working on this, but these declarations have made us speed things up," said chief of the Justice Ministry's religious affairs unit, Carlos Gonzalez.

Fidel Denounces Human Trafficking
Not what you think it is... crappy translation as usual by me.
President Fidel Castro denounced the existence of a network for the illegal traffic of persons across the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, with the destination for Cubans being the United States.
I was fooled for a second there. Gee, I thought he was coming out against sex slavery.
"The organization trafficking persons from Cuba to Mexico is primarily under the control of radical Cubans in the state of Quintana Roo, who posess suitable means in order to move these emmigrants." From Mexico the Cubans are transported to the United States by air with a false passport or by the border crossing points, in some cases obtaining automatic residence thanks to the Cuban Adjustment Act.
Lately it seems that Fidel and his sidekick Hugo have adapted to the ol' Tranzi Newspeak pretty damn well. Castro's an old guy. He's been speaking Bolshevik for over 50 years. Old guys don't pick up new languages that fast. Hugo is clever, in a "peasant pulling one over on the squire" sort of way, but he's not bright enough to suddenly start sounding like a Spanish-speaking version of Duncan Black. So is it a miracle? An authoritarian gift of tongues? "I swear he's speaking anarchist!" "No. Can't you hear? He's speaking anti-globalism." Or do our friends at MoveOn (and their allies) have other clients besides Cindy Sheehan? It's pure speculation at this point, but my befuddled mind is having a hard time coming up with better theories.

Woman believed killed in Peru crash found alive
A Peruvian woman believed killed when a plane plowed into a jungle swamp has been found in a hospital, reducing the number of victims to 39 and bringing that of survivors to 59, the airline said on Friday. A 28-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was found by her husband in a hospital in Pucallpa, near where the Boeing 737-200 crashed in a freak hailstorm as it came in to land, said a spokesman for state-owned airline TANS who declined to give his name. The woman has been transferred to Lima, where she was in serious condition and on a ventilator. Her son, who was traveling with her, was reported to have undergone surgery in the capital.

The crash killed 32 Peruvians, three Americans, one man and two women; a Spanish woman: a Colombian woman; an Australian woman and an Italian man, said Jorge Belevan, a second TANS spokesman. Only six of the dead, all Peruvians, have not been identified, said Belevan. Their bodies are in the morgue of the steamy northern jungle town of Pucallpa. The plane was reduced to chunks of charred rubble and body parts were strewn about, yet more than half the 98 passengers and crew miraculously survived. Survivors, including a 9-year-old girl who rescued her baby cousin and a man who watched his skin shrivel as a fireball swept the plane, told stories of heroism and horror, including how a baby was plucked from the mud.

Europe
Possible Bird Flu in Finland
Associated Press Writer HELSINKI, Finland Finnish authorities said Friday they had found a suspected case of bird flu in the north of the country. An Agriculture Ministry official said it was unlikely to be a case of the H5N1 strain, which scientists fear might spark a human pandemic.

The ministry said the case involved a gull near the city of Oulu, some 370 miles north of Helsinki. Final test results were expected in three weeks.

Authorities said it was the first case of bird flu ever found in Finland, but that details on the particular strain of virus were still unclear.

Riitta Heinonen at the ministry said it was possible, but unlikely, that the case involved the H5N1 strain, the one circulating in Asia and in eastern Russia, which scientists are concerned about. There has not so far been a recorded case of the H5N1 strain in Europe.

"A monitoring program in Finland has revealed a preliminary find of a bird flu virus in a gull," the ministry said in a statement. It added that the find would not prompt any special measures for the time being.

European Union experts warned on Thursday that the Russian outbreak could spread west to Europe, and the executive European Commission called on the 25 member states to increase surveillance.

In Vietnam, officials said Friday that bird flu has killed three rare civets born in captivity at a national park, marking the first time the virus has been reported in the species.
It's made it to mammals.

Britain's Labour Party elite get pills to survive bird flu, none for Tories
MEMBERS of Britain’s elite have been selected as priority cases to receive scarce pills and vaccinations at the taxpayers’ expense if the country is hit by a deadly bird flu outbreak.
Workers at the BBC and prominent politicians — such as cabinet ministers — would be offered protection from the virus.
Ken Livingstone, the London mayor, has already spent £1m to make sure his personal office and employees have their own emergency supplies of 100,000 antiviral tablets.
If there is an avian flu pandemic in the coming months there would be enough drugs to protect less than 2% of the British population for a week.
The Department of Health has drawn up a priority list of those who would be first to receive lifesaving drugs. Top of the list are health workers followed by those in key public sector jobs.
Although senior government ministers would be among the high-priority cases, the department said this weekend that it had not decided whether to include opposition politicians...

Afghanistan/South Asia
Rebellion financed by porn
Rebels in India's north-eastern state of Tripura are making pornographic films to raise money for their separatist campaign, officials say.

The information has come from surrendered guerrillas of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), according to police.

They say the rebels are forcing captured tribal women, and some elephants men, to take part in the films.

The former guerrillas of the NLFT have told police their leaders not only sexually abused scores of tribal girls recruited into the rebel army but also used them - and some male guerrillas - to produce scores of porn films, officials say.

"The films were found to be dubbed in Burmese, Bengali, Thai and Hindi, suggesting they were being marketed to many countries in the region," said Ghanshyam Murari Srivastava, Tripura's police chief.

Discreet inquiries with video production houses in Tripura confirmed what the surrendered rebels are reported to have said.

"We do get orders to process raw porn shot in remote tribal areas from time to time," the owner of a video production company in the state's capital Agartala told the BBC.

"We know the insurgents are behind these films. When we process their raw stock, we can see boys standing around with automatic rifles and revolvers pulling in girls but we are supposed to cut all that out and just concentrate on the sex," the owner said.

"It is very good money and we don't think it is right to question the insurgents anyway," he said.
OK, so you're an accessory after the fact. Book him, Danno.

But in some other northeast Indian states like Manipur, the rebels punish those who produce pornography.
We hate competition!

In the state of Manipur, some girls who acted in porn films were shot in the legs, as were the producers.

[sigh] I suppose they'll go to snuff films next. Whatever happened to the good old days when they robbed banks or sold drugs?

Aid for Zim-bob slum victims blocked
President Robert Mugabe's government has blocked a $30m (£16.6m) UN fundraising drive to provide food and medicine to Zimbabweans hardest hit by the state destruction of urban slum housing, UN relief officials said yesterday.

UN aid agencies presented the Mugabe government three weeks ago with a draft appeal to raise funds to assist more than 300,000 people worst affected by the demolitions. But the government rejected the idea, according to UN officials in Zimbabwe who spoke on condition of anonymity. "We are continuing to work with the government, but we have not gotten their support on the draft appeal to date," Kristen Knutson, spokeswoman for the UN emergency relief office, said yesterday. "We are working with the government to get access to those who are most vulnerable."

Despite hindrance from the Mugabe government, the UN has succeeded in distributing blankets, clean water and some food to 168,000 of the most vulnerable people. Unicef reported that 250,000 children were homeless, many living in transit camps as a result of the bulldozing of homes. With relief funds scarce, the agency said in a statement, its own staff "had opted to help children out of their own pockets".
$30 million could find a nice revolution, if we can't spend it on aid.

Grand Canyon to Get Glass-Bottomed Walk
An American Indian tribe with land along the Grand Canyon is planning to build a glass-bottomed walkway that will jut out 70 feet from the canyon's edge. The horseshoe-shaped skywalk, expected to open in January, is part of the Hualapai Tribe's $40 million effort to turn 1,000 acres of reservation land into a tourist destination that will also feature an Indian village and Western-themed town.

The tribe's reservation is some 200 miles by road to the west of the section of the Grand Canyon National Park that most tourists visit.

The walkway, with a glass bottom and sides, will be supported by steel beams and will accommodate 120 people, though it is designed to hold 72 million pounds, said Sheri Yellowhawk, chief executive officer of the Grand Canyon Resort Corp., the tribal-owned company that is overseeing the project.
So, Michael Moore won't be allowed to go?
"You're basically looking 4,000 feet down. It's a whole new way to experience the Grand Canyon," Yellowhawk said. Admission will be $25.

The project is still seeking an insurer, said architect David Jin, who said he came up with the skywalk idea while visiting the canyon in 1996.
I'll definitely have to make a trip up there.

I don't mean to get off topic but I don't I think I will many chances to address this situation.

Why don't you illiterate's in the tribe use the $40 million and GET a education or fix infrastructure or better yet, a college education. This startling pdf report shows not only poverty and illiteracy of American Indians in the US but it shows that, pouring millions of federal dollars into the tribes in the US did virtually nothing, to increase from the poverty level compared to the American Indians south of the border. Reason number 1001 that just blindly pouring money without accountability, is counterproductive. Below are some excerpts from the pdf report. Some of statistics, although not surprising, but still very disappointing and shows a sad state of affairs compared to the wealth of this country.

"Throughout the United States, Native Americans tend to have higher poverty rates, higher unemployment rates, and lower quality housing than other groups, and although some border tribes fare better than others, this pattern also holds true for the approximately 80,000 tribal members living in the immediate
border region."

"nearly 92% of households are without sewer services and 87.5% are without running wate. In the 12 localities in Sonora where 70% or more of the population speak an indigenous language, illiteracy approaches 65%."

"Poverty leads to low health indicators in Indian Country. Native peoples in the U.S. have a 30% higher infant mortality rate than the population as a whole, and they are more likely to die from drug related causes.."

#6  Pardon me OT author, but the local tribes in my area are thriving far better now than when the BIA was their feed master. The former Secretary of the Interior James Watts was correct in pointing out that such dependence was the greatest demonstration of the failure of government socialism. Once they assisted in getting a Repulican governor elected who would sign gaming compacts the tribes next to the major cities and along the interstate are now bustling with construction of new housing, community and emergency support centers, offering generous scholarships, and taking care of their own. The one major tribe which has refused the casino route has been the Navajo and they continue to reside in their traditional poverty. [Of course, given the deep and traditional history of corruption of each succeeding administration of the Navajo, in this case it might be just gasoline thrown on a fire]. However the other tribes are demonstrating that given the opportunity, they too can discover not only the value of generated income, but the power and pleasures of Washington based lobbyists.

#7  not gonna happen: 70'X 25' wide (approx. from sketches I've seen) x building code assembly live loads (300 PSF) plus structure dead load (assume 50PSF) = pt load at cliff face of 612,500 lbs, and a moment of 21 million ft-lbs. Unlikely the sedimentary soils are anywhere close to a fraction of this, and pile driving, abutment building will bring in NEPA and visual impacts....believe me, I know this shit. The engineering's not that hard. The environmental impacts won't be allowed

#8  SU,

The things that you mentioned are a good start. Better late than never. But, I am only concerned with literacy rates improving.

I want to know the percentate of kids/adults are graduating middle school, HS, average SAT score, go to 4-year college, etc. Electing a Republican Governor and building thriving apartment complexes does not improve literacy. If you disagree with me, then provide me the latest education stats, not your opinion.

Frank,

I think the walkway will work as long as everyone gets a parachute. A surprise 4000ft drop will be a much needed rush for grandma.

Gosh, just think how much better off they would be if they could run bordelos and sell drugs.

Fuel Cell Tech Hitting The Market
..The device, designed to specifications for the US Army by the California company UltraCell, weighs just 1.3 kilograms when fuelled up and is the size of a novel. With a supply of 500 millilitres of methanol, the cell can chuck out 45 watts for a day, which is enough to power a laptop...
Almost half an amp at 110 volts is very good.

#2  Fuel cells are just more compact long life batteries. They don't solve any energy supply issues despite the hype surrounding them.
Posted by: phil_b || 08/27/2005 0:49 Comments || Top||

#3  Well they do burn stuff we don't have to import from the Middle east or Central America and are portable.

#4  There are lots of variables to power sources, that make them better or worse for particular applications. Batteries have lots of flaws, such as the charge/discharge curve, limited range of current draw, difficulty with peak discharge, and discharge "memory", each of which can severely limit functionality in various types of batteries.

Fuel cells give good efficiency from the fuel, can be recharged without an external electrical source, maintain a constant voltage and can handle a wide range of current flows. They also recharge quickly and produce very little pollution.

To put it in real terms: there are a couple of hundred standard battery types, but fuel cells are so adaptable, they can not only replace have of these standard types, they can be used in several times the number of applications where batteries cannot be used. (Think, a small fuel cell with a gigantic fuel tank, lasting for years, as one example.)

While energy "savings" may not be high, utility will be much greater. Plus the fact that they will not replace batteries, they will add on to what batteries currently do.

#7  Bulk methanol is about $2.50/gallon. But it has half the energy density of gasoline. While methanol is mostly made from natural gas (methane) and tracks nat. gas prices, it can also be made from any plant waste containing cellulose and seems more logical than to use make alcohol from grain just to burn it up.

Based on the articles fuel consumption of 500ml per day for 45W power output, 1 gallon of methanol would be enough to produce 323W for a day or 7741 Watt-hours.

Africa: Horn
Eritrean Moslems Debate With Christians About Religion
From Compass Direct
Three months after 250 wedding guests were arrested in the Eritrean capital for attending a Protestant Christian wedding, 129 of them remain jailed under severe conditions. Initially 70 of the arrested guests identified themselves as members of the government-approved Orthodox, Catholic or Lutheran churches, after which police officials in Asmara released them.

Compass has confirmed that the remaining 180 wedding guests were held at Asmara’s Police Station No. 5 for six weeks. The majority belonged to either the Meserete Christos or Full Gospel churches, in addition to members of Tebadasso, a renewal group within Catholicism. Some of the prisoners had their Bibles confiscated and burned in front of them, and all were subjected to insults and mocking because of their faith. The male prisoners reportedly were subject to beatings.

In mid July, the police station commander assembled the 121 men and 59 women. He told them they were in prison because they and their church leaders were working for the United States to “disrupt the peace and unity of the Eritrean people” and eventually would try to overthrow the Eritrean government. Shortly afterwards, all the accused were transferred to the Adi-Abeto military camp and placed in solitary confinement. Since then, 51 of the women have been released after signing a pledge not to attend any Protestant Christian activities in the future, including weddings. Military authorities have so far refused to release the last eight women, two of them minors. Until they sign a complete denial of their evangelical faith, they were told, they will stay in solitary confinement.

The 121 men who had not yet done their compulsory military service have been relocated from Adi-Abeto to the Wi’a military training center, 20 miles south of the Red Sea port of Massawa. Included among them are a pastor of the Meserete Christos Church, an evangelist from the Kale Hiwot church, and the nationally known gospel singer Esayes Stefanos.

Under tightening surveillance by military and security police authorities, wedding couples in Eritrea’s banned churches are now forced to scale down their traditional marriage celebrations. Since singing or other Christian activity in a public place is considered illegal, local evangelical believers have stopped inviting any wedding guests, for fear of exposing them to arrest and imprisonment. ...

After nearly seven months in prison, Rema Church pastor Habteab Oqbamichael was released last week from the Mai-Serwa military camp. The camp commanders handed down a “final warning” to him, declaring he would be executed for any further religious activities. But Oqbamichael was reported by fellow Christians to be “in good spirits, and [seemingly] not threatened by the warning he received.”

But Kale Hiwot church pastor Oqbamichael Haimanot, who suffered a mental breakdown three months ago under harsh treatment at the Sawa military training center, is reported to be in very poor health. Arrested last January, Haimanot continues to be subjected to hard labor for refusing to renounce his faith and help convince his congregation to return to the Orthodox Church.

Another jailed Protestant, evangelist Girmaye Ambaye, has endured severe punishment at Asmara’s Police Station No. 1 since his May arrest. This is the second months-long arrest by Eritrean police for Ambaye, 45, who has continued to witness about his faith despite his deteriorating physical condition.

The exact whereabouts or condition of 12 other evangelical pastors arrested and jailed incommunicado over the past 15 months remains unknown. More than 1,000 of their church members also remain under custody in prisons, military confinement camps, police stations and metal shipping containers, accused of breaking the law by worshipping outside government-approved churches.

Popular Christian singer Helen Berhane has been locked in a shipping container at the Mai-Serwa military camp since March 2004. She was arrested for her latest music tape, accused of “corrupting” Eritrean young people. .....

In May 2002, the Eritrean government banned all religious groups outside the Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran and Muslim faiths. Authorities have since refused to legalize the country’s 12 independent Protestant denominations, arresting and jailing any of their 20,000 members caught praying, singing or worshipping in now illegal church buildings or even in their own homes.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Air America's Former Chairman Is Missing
The former chairman of Air America Radio, Evan Montvel Cohen - who former colleagues said engineered transfers of more than $800,000 to the liberal radio network from a boys and girls club in the Bronx - is missing, according to a lawyer who is trying to have him served with legal papers. At least two people have said Mr. Cohen is in Hawaii. He has not responded to a series of e-mail messages in recent weeks from The New York Sun asking him about his role.
AOL must be down again.
Mr. Cohen, 39, helped lead the launch of Air America in March 2004. Less than two months later, Piquant LLC acquired the radio network from Mr. Cohen's Progress Media. Piquant LLC has agreed to pay $875,000 to Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, without interest, in installments over the next two years.
Though they haven't really started yet.
Board members of the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx, where Mr. Cohen was employed as development director at the time he helped launch Air America, have said Mr. Cohen earned their trust through a very successful fund-raising event that he staged in Manhattan for the nonprofit club.
That's how he managed to get signatory authority, eh?
Mr. Perlman said he knew Mr. Cohen through Mr. Cohen's brother, Thomas Montvel Cohen. All three men attended Beloit College in Wisconsin. Despite claims to friends and coworkers that he had graduated from Beloit, however, Evan Cohen never fulfilled his graduation requirements nor did he receive a degree from the school, according to Beloit's registrar, Sherry Sandee.

Ms. Sandee said Mr. Cohen attended Beloit intermittently from 1984 to 1989, missing several semesters. She said he tried to make up the missing credits just before he started the Air America venture in 2003. For those credits, Mr. Cohen, a government major, submitted a project entitled "Fleecing non-profit organizations" "Examining the role of government in economic development."

It was at Beloit that Mr. Cohen befriended a future White House aide, David Goodfriend. After serving as deputy staff secretary to President Clinton, Mr. Goodfriend became a leading figure in conceptualizing and launching Air America. It was he who introduced Mr. Cohen to investors.

Mr. Cohen was the first person named in a recent lawsuit filed by an owner of radio stations that is seeking more than $1.5 million it says it is owed by Air America. But process servers have been unable to serve Mr. Cohen with the lawsuit, according to an attorney, Randy Mastro. "We are still trying to locate him," Mr. Mastro, a deputy mayor in the Giuliani administration who is representing MultiCultural Radio Broadcasting in its suit against Air America, said yesterday.
Have you tried Hawaii?
Or Sandy Berger's socks?
The law firm Stillman & Friedman was initially representing Evan Montvel Cohen but no longer is, according to Mr. Mastro, who is with the firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. Julian Friedman, of that firm, did not return phone messages yesterday.
"No comment. Go away."
