#3  So do what you must, Israel, after the weekend's appalling events. Just don't lose your friends in the process.

So, nuke Tehran and call it a day?

Everyone looks at the Middle East conflict as Muslims vs Juice. That dynamic certainly exists, but I'd argue the big one is Sunni vs Shia.

#5  We made a huge mistake after 9/11. Should have parachuted a very big H bomb next to the Kaaba. Then told the sauds "Stay away from it. Don't interfere with our people who go to service it.

Ambassador Tracy: The United States, at Russia’s request, handed over data on the terrorist attack at Crocus
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] After the terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow, the United States continued to share information with Russian intelligence services, including upon direct request, said US Ambassador to Russia Lynn Tracy, whose words are quoted on April 14 in the Telegram channel of the diplomatic mission.

She added that Washington will continue to do so in the future.

“Despite our very real and deep differences with the Kremlin, the United States believes that Russian citizens have the right to live in safety and dignity, protected from the threat of terrorism,” the ambassador said.

As Regnum reported, on the evening of March 22, armed terrorists attacked the Crocus City Hall near Moscow. They opened fire on visitors with machine guns and set fire to the auditorium. The terrorist attack killed 145 people, including six children. 551 people were injured.

FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov said on March 27 that the testimony of those detained in the Crocus terrorist attack case confirms the Ukrainian trace. He emphasized that the Islamists could not have prepared a terrorist attack on their own; they had help.

The press bureau of the Foreign Intelligence Service clarified that the United States is shielding those responsible for the terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow, and the administration of US President Joe Biden is intensifying work to form a distorted picture of the attack. However, Washington’s propaganda rhetoric regarding Crocus is not selling well: the Americans cannot achieve unified assessments of the tragedy near Moscow even among NATO and EU members, the SVR clarified.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya emphasized at a meeting of the organization's Security Council that there is no doubt about Ukraine's direct involvement in the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall.

PTI-led opposition alliance 'conspiring' against country: Baby Bhutto
[GEO.TV] Firing a fresh salvo at the PTI-led “grand opposition alliance”, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said that they are hatching a conspiracy against the country under the garb of poll rigging claims.

Bilawal made the remarks while addressing a public gathering at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh in Larkana on Sunday in connection with 45th death anniversary of former prime minister Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

“Many forces did not believe in democracy. They used to hatch conspiracies but President Asif Ali Zardari foiled their designs.”

Taking a veiled jab at the six-party opposition alliance, the former foreign minister said that some politician wanted to launch PNA-II even today.

The Pakistan National Alliance (PNA), a nine-party alliance, was launched in 1977 against the Bhutto-led government.

Without naming Imran Khan, Bilawal said that some politicians play with the fate of the country and people for the sake of “personal ego”.
Is any ego other than personal?
“Now they are hatching conspiracy against the country and its economy by beating the drums of [electoral] rigging,” he added.

His remarks came a day after the PTI-led opposition alliance — including Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP), Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) — launched its protest movement with a power show in Balochistan’s Pishin district.

The six-party alliance launched the movement against the alleged massive rigging in the February 8 general elections.

Stressing the need for “national reconciliation” to steer the country out of the crisis, the PPP leader said that the country would not progress if they do the “politics of abuses”.

He urged the politicians to stay in their ambit prescribed in the Constitution.

If the democracy is derailed, masses would be the first who suffer loss, warned the PPP leader. “Politicians utmost priority should be steering the country out of crisis.”

#2  "Indeed, Abu Zaydeh is well aware that for the past two years the Hamas leadership had been talking about implementing "the last promise" (alwaed al'akhir) – a divine promise regarding the end of days, when all human beings will accept Islam. Sinwar and his circle ascribed an extreme and literal meaning to the notion of "the promise," a belief that pervaded all their messages: in speeches, sermons, lectures in schools and universities. The cardinal theme was the implementation of the last promise, which included the forced conversion of all heretics to Islam, or their killing."

#7  For some reason that didn’t stay as the day’s headline. Clearly Fred will be a while longer debugging this new iteration of Rantburg’s program but once he’s done it’ll be smooth and lovely.

I thought that was the key paragraph, too, Old Salty. And the previous bits go partway to answer Besoeker’s question from yesterday when he posted that video: Why did not Israel know in advance?

I asked Abu Zaydeh whether he had ever thought that Hamas was capable of perpetrating horrors like those of October 7. "If you had asked me," he replied, "I would have answered like any Israeli intelligence officer: It's inconceivable that this is what they're planning. I would not have believed that they would not take into account what would happen to them on the day after."

He adds, "There were many statements by Hamas before October 7, and we in Fatah would laugh. For example, someone from Hamas wrote on Facebook: 'Remember, in another few months the al-Qassam men will get to Ashkelon, enter the jail and free all the prisoners.' That was the atmosphere. It was hard for us to grasp that they believed that with 3,000, 5,000 or even 10,000 armed militants they would conquer Israel. That's insane. But when you believe that God is sending you to do his bidding, there's no one to argue with. The signs were out there the whole time."

Iranian Leader Khamenei Posts Tweet in Hebrew Threatening Israel After Missile Attack – Israeli President Responds
[Gateway] Late Saturday Iran fired off missiles and 50-100 drones in an unprecedented attack from Iranian soil on the state of Israel.

Israel later announced that 99% of Iran’s missiles were taken down and did not reach their target. US ships assisted in shooting down the incoming missiles that crossed over Iraqi and Jordanian airspace before they were shot down by Israel.

This was the first time the Iranian regime fired on Israel directly — typically Iran uses its affiliates of Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi rebels in Yemen to do their dirty work.

On Sunday, Iranian leader Ayatollah Khamenei posted a threatening tweet on X in Hebrew.

After Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel on Saturday-early Sunday morning, Khamenei threatened Israel, "Al-Quds will be in the hands of the Muslims, and the Muslim world will celebrate the liberation of Palestine."

Obviously, Khamenei taunting the Israelis after his unprecedented strike against Israel just hours earlier.

How does Israel's Iron Dome work?
I don"t know, but as far as I know, we don’t have one and should.
[GEO.TV] One of the advanced air defence systems Iron Dome started operating in 2011. It detects missiles, drones, and rockets when they are launched toward Israel and stops them in mid-air by destroying the projectiles.

The highly effective missile defence was developed by indigenous firm Rafael Advanced Defence Systems with
[billion$ in]
US support.

It comprises mobile units on trucks and batteries. They are scattered all over Israel. It has three to four launchers that can fire up to 20 interceptor missiles.

On the initial level, radars detect approaching objects, and the information is transferred for analysis.

The experts decide after analysing the information what to launch for interception.

Then counter missiles are fired directly, or near their flying path to neutralise the coming projectiles or weapons.

It can be overwhelmed after a large number of rockets are fired, as Hamas did on October 7, last year.

It is known as Kippat Barzel in Hebrew and there are personnel overseeing the system 24/7.

The country also has medium and long-range defence systems, called David"s Sling, Patriot, and Arrow.

How much does Iron Dome cost?
According to the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, each Iron Dome missile interceptor costs between $40,000 and $50,000 to produce.

Iran"s missile attack cost Israel 4-5 billion shekels Sunday, Brigadier General Reem Aminoach, former financial advisor to the IDF chief of staff, told Ynet studio.

The Washington-based security think tank estimated that a complete system costs around $100 million to produce.

A CNN report estimated that the US has spent over $2.9 billion on the Iron Dome program.

Biden watched in real time in Situation Room as more than 300 drones and missiles rained over Tel Aviv: Inside the tense preparations as White House braced for Iran to start smashing Israel
I can just imagine the side conversations during those hours, especially as sundown approached.
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] American officials breathed a sign of relief on Saturday night when they realized their preparations to help Israel, made over the past 10 days, had paid off and Iran had been thwarted.

President Joe Biden and his team were mindful the attack from Tehran 'could have caused an uncontrollable escalation abroad regional conflict, something we have worked day and night to avoid,' a senior administration told reporters in a briefing on Sunday.

Biden and his team watched - in real time in the White House Situation Room - as Iran sent over 300 aerial attacks into Israel. At one point, Tehran fired over 100 ballistic missiles at the same time, leading to a tense moment among the Americans, who said the level of force was at the 'high end' of what they expected.

'He was in the Situation Room getting real time updates, as this unfolded, including at the time of missile launches,' the official said of Biden, adding 'there was a bit of a relief, which you can imagine those tense moments,' when it was clear the attack was thwarted.

Two squadrons of U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles and anti-missile defenses shot from two U.S. aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean Sea helped Israeli defenses war off the attack, which left minimal damage.

'The United States enabled Israel to spectacularly defeat this unprecedent attack,' the U.S. official said, pointing out that 'President Biden is the first American President to directly defend Israel.'

Hamas reaffirms demands in response to mediator's ceasefire proposal, adds more
“Nuts!”
[GEO.TV] Hamas has sent its response to the Gaza ceasefire proposal to Egyptian and Qatari mediators, in which it reaffirmed its demands, the Gaza-ruling movement said in a statement on Saturday.

Hamas reiterated its demands, including a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes, the facilitation of more relief supplies and aid into Gaza, and the start of reconstruction efforts in the coastal enclave.

In response to the ceasefire proposal delivered on April 8, Hamas stressed its readiness to conclude a serious prisoner-hostage exchange agreement with Israel.
It sounds considerably more unreasonable when the Times of Israel lays out the rest of Hamas’s demands. Bet they’re sorry now that they waited for Iran’s big attack to relieve them:
IsraelTimes] Hamas has presented a hostage release proposal to mediators in which it demands Israel observe a six-week ceasefire before it receives any of the 129 hostages held by the terror group since October 7, Hebrew daily Haaretz reports.

The terror group’s proposal was reportedly submitted after it rejected the US-mediated deal late last night.

In the proposal, Hamas suggests that the IDF would be required to cease all fighting in Gaza and retreat from urban areas for six weeks, allowing displaced Palestinians to return north. Only after the end of the six weeks would any hostages be released, Hamas says, claiming that it would use the weeks of paused hostilities to locate the hostages and ascertain what condition they are in.

The terror group’s draft stipulates that 30 Palestinian prisoners would be released for every Israeli civilian — a steep increase from the 3:1 ratio of the weeklong November truce. It also demands that 50 Palestinian prisoners — 30 of them serving life sentences — be released for every captive soldier.

Israel has previously dismissed similar demands as “delusional” and the number of Palestinian prisoners Hamas has demanded, as well as the severity of their crimes, has been a sticking point in several previous rounds of negotiations.

US will not support any Israeli counterattack against Iran: Biden
Biden to Iran: "Don"t."
Iran to Biden: "Nyah!"

[GEO.TV] President Joe Biden has said that the US will not support any Israeli counterattack against Iran, Axio quoted a senior White House official as saying.

The US president stated this during a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Biden and his senior advisers are highly concerned an Israeli response to Iran"s attack on Israel would lead to a regional war with catastrophic consequences, US officials said.

Iran threatens to attack Jordan if it ‘cooperates’ with Israel
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Jordan will be Iran’s "next target" if it "cooperates" with Israel amid Iranian missile and drone attacks against Israel, the semi-official Fars news agency reported early Sunday, while two regional security sources said Jordanian jets downed dozens of Iranian drones flying across northern and central Jordan heading to Israel.

Iran’s military is "carefully monitoring the movements of Jordan during the punitive attack against the Zionist regime, and if Jordan intervenes, it will be the next target," Fars reported, citing, an "informed source" in Iran’s armed forces.

"Necessary warnings were given to Jordan and other regional countries before the operation," the agency, which is close to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), quoted the source as saying.

According to the two regional sources, the drones were brought down in the air on the Jordanian side of the Jordan Valley and were heading in the direction of Jerusalem. Others were intercepted close to the Iraqi-Syrian border. They gave no further details.
"We can say no more!"

Two regional security sources said late Saturday that Jordan’s air defenses were ready to intercept and shoot down any Iranian drones or aircraft that violate its airspace.

They said the army was also in a state of high alert and radar systems were monitoring any drone activity coming from the direction of Iraq and Syria.

Residents in several cities in the northern part of the country near Syria and central and southern areas heard heavy aerial activity. A security source said the country’s air force was intensifying reconnaissance flights.

Jordan had earlier said it closed its airspace starting on Saturday night to all incoming, departing and transiting aircraft in what officials told Rooters were precautionary measures in the event of an Iranian strike across its border.

"The relevant authorities took the decision to close the airspace for precautionary reasons as a result of the surrounding security situation," Jordan’s government spokesperson Muhannad Mubaideen said.

IRGC chief spells 'new equation' after first-ever Iranian strikes on Israel
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Sunday that any future Israeli attacks on Iranian interests and people will provoke direct retaliation from Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries" embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime"s influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
itself.

"We have established a new equation: henceforth, any assault by [Israel] on our people, property, or interests will trigger a reciprocal response originating from within the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran," state media quoted the IRGC’s chief commander Hossein Salami as saying.

Salami’s remarks followed Iran’s unprecedented assault on Israeli territory late Saturday, a retaliatory move against Israel’s deadly strike on Tehran’s consulate in Damascus on April 1.

For all the latest headlines follow our Google News channel online or via the app.

Salami said that Iran’s retaliation was a targeted operation, focusing solely on the facilities used to carry out the consulate attack.

"This operation could have been very extensive, but we limited the scope of the operation to the facilities that [Israel] used to attack our consulate," he said.

Salami warned that should Israel choose to retaliate, "our subsequent action will be much harsher, drawing upon the insights we have gathered regarding their capabilities."

The Israeli military said that Iran launched over 300 drones and missiles toward Israeli territory, causing 12 injuries.

Iran said its attack was "completely successful," but Israel said that the majority of the drones and missiles were intercepted before reaching Israeli territory with assistance from allies, including the US.

Iran summons British, French and German ambassadors over 'double standards'
[GEO.TV] Iran"s foreign ministry summoned on Sunday the ambassadors of Britain, France, and Germany to question what it referred to as their "irresponsible stance" regarding Tehran"s retaliatory strikes on Israel, the semi-official Iranian Labour News Agency reported.

The three European countries have condemned Iran"s drone and missile attack against Israel, which went through Saturday night into Sunday and were in retaliation for Israel"s bombing of its consulate in Syria on April 1.

The director for Western Europe at Iran"s foreign ministry accused the three countries of "double standards" as they opposed earlier this month a Russian-drafted UN Security Council statement that would have condemned Israel"s attack on Iran"s embassy compound in Syria.

'The issue is settled': what is known about Iran’s massive attack on Israel
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Aleksandr Il'yin

[REGNUM] Last night was marked by “the largest drone attack in the history of mankind,” as the former commander of the US Army in Europe, Mark Hertling, described in the media as a full-scale attack by Iran on targets in Israel.
As in Mark "Full semiautomatic" Hertling
According to various estimates, Iran fired about 200 Shahed drones, 110 ground-based missiles and 36 cruise missiles towards the Jewish state. With reference to the Pentagon, there were even fantastic figures of 400-500 UAVs.

Most of the incoming targets were intercepted by the Iron Dome system, as well as by American, British and Jordanian air defenses involved in assisting Israel. In particular, British Air Force aircraft based at the Cyprus base took part in repelling the attack.

Iran's targets were military installations of the Israeli army located both in the center of the country and in the south, in the Negev Desert. The Lebanese Hezbollah joined in the attack on targets in the north of the country, firing unguided rockets. Israeli media assess the damage as "relatively minor." They also talk about “minor damage” at one of the military bases.

In turn, representatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) paint a different picture. According to them, “the IRGC attacked important military targets of the terrorist army of Israel in the occupied territories, successfully targeted and destroyed them.”

In any case, a real assessment of the damage caused can only be done after some time. And even after that, the general public may never know about the real scale of destruction.

Numerous videos circulating online show Iranian missiles flying over the territory of neighboring countries, the operation of the Dome, and explosions on the ground. Representatives of the American command say that most of the targets were destroyed outside Israeli airspace. Debris from at least one rocket fell on the streets of the Jordanian capital Amman.

The streets of Iranian cities were full of jubilant people who wanted revenge for the destruction of the Iranian consulate building in Damascus on April 1 by Israeli missiles. Then, as a result of an attack on a diplomatic institution protected by special laws, several Iranian officers and generals were killed.

After the attack, which lasted five hours, parties to the conflict and major powers, including Russia, began making diplomatic statements.

Israel has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. The country's representative, Gilad Erdan, said Iran had violated the organization's charter and asked Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to condemn the attack. “Where is your voice, where is your condemnation? Wake up!” - he wrote on social networks.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promises a “tough and clear response.” The Prime Minister himself, simultaneously with the launch of Iranian missiles and drones, addressed the nation in which he stated that he adheres to the principle: strike whoever strikes Israel. Netanyahu promises “cold-blooded and decisive” defense of Israel from any attack.

An IRGC spokesman spoke on state television about the possibility of a more serious strike if Israel decides to continue its escalation.

The leadership of the Corps, which is the most elite unit of the Iranian army and a kind of “punishing sword” of the Islamic Republic, emphasized that any manifestation of aggression and participation in causing damage to Iran from anywhere in the world will lead to a mirror response.

The IRGC also unequivocally states that the United States bears full responsibility for the actions of its ally and calls them a “terrorist regime.”

In turn, Iran's permanent mission to the UN refers to Article 51 of the organization's charter, which allows for an attack in self-defense.

“The issue is settled. But the Israeli regime may make another mistake, and then Iran’s reaction will be much harsher,” the permanent mission said. And at the same time they warned the United States that they should “keep their distance” without interfering in the conflict.

Immediately after the attack began, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei announced that the "malicious Zionist regime" would be punished.

The Iranian attack has already been condemned by Britain and France, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reminded the world that his country firmly supports Israel. The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, spoke of an "unprecedented escalation".

The First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, called what was happening “a potential acute Middle East crisis.” “If Israel responds, Iran will respond in a more powerful and decisive manner <...> It all depends on the next steps of the parties involved, or lack thereof,” he added.

According to Polyansky, an urgent meeting of the Security Council is scheduled for the evening of April 14, where the consequences of the Iranian attack will be discussed. Ahead of the meeting, both Iran and Israel have already prepared letters with mutual accusations of violating international law.

At the time of writing this material, US President Joe Biden, who urgently interrupted his weekend, is preparing an address to the nation. Earlier, the American media wrote that there is great concern in his administration due to the unpredictability of Netanyahu, who can strike back without regard for the consequences. At the same time, Iranian nuclear facilities are named as the main targets of the Israelis.

#4  But it’s not a 50% hit rate, M. It’s 99% of that part that’s actually a threat when sent up in what’s intended to be overwhelming waves. I imagine there were chortles of glee in the IRGC planning room as they set it all up, congratulating one another on their military cleverness.

Clearly Allah wanted Iran to be publicly humiliated.

Russian embassy is seeking information about a Russian on a ship seized by Iran
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The Russian Embassy in Iran is in constant contact with local authorities and is clarifying the details of the presence of a Russian on board the hijacked MSC Aries vessel to provide consular assistance. This is stated in the Telegram channel of the Russian diplomatic mission in Tehran.

“The Embassy is in constant contact with local authorities to clarify all the details of the presence of Russian citizen T. S. Kolchanov on board the Aries sea vessel in order to provide the necessary consular assistance,” the message says.

The diplomatic mission noted that they are in contact with the sailor’s relatives.

As Regnum reported, on April 13, the naval forces of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized the commercial ship MSC Aries in the Strait of Hormuz. A day earlier, it had been in the Persian Gulf near Dubai and, in line with the practice of Israeli-linked ships passing through the region, had turned off tracking data.

A spokesman for the vessel's operator, MSC, said there was a crew of 25 people on board. After the seizure, the route of the container ship was changed, the ship is moving towards Iran.

Telegram channel “Vladivostok No. 1” wrote that sailors from the Primorsky Territory are on board the container ship MSC Aries, captured by Iranian special forces in the Strait of Hormuz.

It was noted that the ship, associated with the Israeli company Zodiac Group of billionaire Eyal Ofer, was sailing from the UAE to India under the Portuguese flag. Special forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) parachuted from a Mi-17 helicopter and captured a container ship.

Joe Biden Approved Iran's Assault on Israel 'Within Certain Limits'
[Jpost] Iran informed Turkey in advance of its planned operation against Israel, conveyed through diplomatic channels, aiming to limit escalation in the Middle East.

Iran informed Turkey in advance of its planned operation against Israel, a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters on Sunday, adding that Washington had conveyed to Tehran via Ankara that any action it took had to be "within certain limits."

Turkey, which has denounced Israel for its campaign on Gaza, said earlier on Sunday that it did not want a further escalation of tensions in the region.

The Turkish source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had spoken to both his US and Iranian counterparts in the past week to discuss the planned Iranian operation, adding Ankara had been made aware of possible developments.

MIDDLE EAST DE-ESCALATION EFFORTS
Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Fidan to make clear that escalation in the Middle East was not in anyone's interest.

"Iran informed us in advance of what would happen. Possible developments also came up during the meeting with Blinken, and they (the US) conveyed to Iran through us that this reaction must be within certain limits," the source said.

"In response, Iran said the reaction would be a response to Israel's attack on its embassy in Damascus and that it would not go beyond this."

Iran, which neighbours Turkey, had vowed retaliation for what it called an alleged Israeli strike on its Damascus consulate on April 1 that killed seven officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Turkey's foreign ministry later confirmed the contacts in a statement, saying Ankara had called for restraint and warned of a regional war if tensions escalated further.

It said Ankara would continue efforts to prevent further conflict and escalation in the region.

A Turkish security source said CIA chief William Burns had spoken to Ibrahim Kalin, head of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, over the Eid al-Fitr holidays and asked him to act as a "mediator" in the Israel-Iran tensions.

The two discussed ceasefire efforts in Gaza as well, the source said, without elaborating.

#3  /\ Turkish, Jordanian and Iraqi officials said on Sunday that Iran gave wide notice days before its drone and missile attack on Israel, but US officials said Tehran did not warn Washington and that it was aiming to cause significant damage.

Correct, an air base and remote areas were likely specified in the prearranged target deck. No advance "warning" required. "Significant damage" not approved.

Israeli defensive systems were tested, but not overwhelmed.
