Gasps all round over the EU’s dirty movie
THE latest promotional video from Brussels shows European citizens engaged in enthusiastic congress, but it is not the sort of union the founding fathers had in mind. The film, available on the European commission’s space on YouTube, the video website, shows 18 couples having sex.
HT Brussel's Journal where a link to the video is posted. I didn't want to embarrass TW by posting it here.
The video opens with a man and woman ripping each other’s clothes off in the bedroom while bottles rattle on a shelf. Seoglene no doubt. In the interests of sexual equality, two of the couples are gay. In an attempt at humour that might go down better in Belgium than in Britain, the film climaxes with quivering bedheads and loud orgasms. It closes with the line: “Let’s come together.”

The video is part of a campaign by Margot Wallstrom, the communications commissioner, to boost interest in the workings of the EU. Other videos among the 44 posted on the website cover the reform of the common market organisation for sugar and the EU’s antifraud office.

Afghanistan
German kidnapped in Afghanistan
KABUL/BERLIN - A German national has been kidnapped in Afghanistan, the governor of the south-western province of Nimroz, Gholum Dastagir, confirmed Wednesday. It was not clear if the kidnappers were members of the ousted extremist Taleban regime or criminals, Dastagir told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa.

The victim was abducted in the district of Delaram, which is located between Nimroz and the neighbouring province of Farah. Security sources also confirmed that the man had been taken in Delaram, which until recently was a part of Nimroz province but is now administered by Farah.

The German man was last seen in a restaurant in a small market in the district. The man disappeared on June 28, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger said.

A crisis team set up by the ministry met last Saturday to discuss the matter. The German embassy in Kabul has also taken up the case, Jaeger said. The spokesman declined to give details of the missing man, but said he was not a soldier, a journalist or a member of a German aid organization in Afghanistan. Unconfirmed reports said that the man had been travelling on the ring road to Herat in the west of the country.

11 Yemenis arrested for temple boom
Police in Yemen arrested eleven apparently random people on Wednesday in connection with the terrorist attack which killed seven Spanish tourists. They were arrested in Al Mareb, a city near the suicide bomb attack on Monday which also left seven other Spaniards injured. Police sources said there was no conclusive evidence against the suspects. All the detainees are Yemeni. Spanish police forensic experts were helping Yemeni police in the investigation.

Britain
London court jails 'cyber-jihadis'
THREE "cyber-jihadis" who used the internet to urge Muslims to wage holy war on non-believers were jailed for between six-and-a-half and 10 years today in the first case of its kind in Britain.
Tariq Al-Daour, Younes Tsouli and Waseem Mughal had close links with al-Qaeda in Iraq and thought there was a "global conspiracy" to wipe out Islam, the Woolwich Crown Court in south-east London was told.

Moroccan-born Tsouli, 23, was jailed for 10 years; UAE-born Al-Daour, 21, received a six-and-a-half year sentence; and 24-year-old Mughal, who was born in Britain, was given seven-and-a-half years.

Sentencing them, Judge Charles Openshaw said the men had engaged in "cyber jihad", encouraging others to kill "kuffars" or non-believers.

"It would seem that internet websites have become an effective means of communicating such ideas," he said, although he added that none of the men had come close to carrying out acts of violence themselves.

Referring to Tsouli, whom he recommended for deportation to Morocco after serving his sentence, he said: "He came no closer to a bomb or a firearm than a computer keyboard."

Al-Daour, from west London, yesterday admitted "inciting another person to commit an act of terrorism wholly or partly outside the United Kingdom which would, if committed in England and Wales, constitute murder."

Tsouli, also from west London, and Mughal, from Kent, southeast England, admitted the same charge on Monday.

The guilty pleas came part way through a trial which had run for two months.

Al-Daour, Tsouli and Mughal also pleaded guilty to a $4.25 million conspiracy to defraud banks, credit card and charge card companies.

The trial was told the computer experts spent at least 12 months trying to encourage people to follow the extreme ideology of al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, using email and radical websites.

Films of hostages and beheadings were found among their possessions, including footage of British contractor Ken Bigley, who was killed in Iraq in 2004; and US journalist Daniel Pearl, killed in Pakistan in 2002.

Compact discs containing instructions for making explosives and poisons were also found, with other documents giving advice on how to use a rocket-propelled grenade and how to make booby traps and a suicide vest.

Police who trawled through a mass of data and websites also discovered online conversations in which Al-Dour talked of sponsoring terrorist attacks, becoming "the new Osama," and justifying suicide bombings.

Hero Cabbie
We've had a number of people posting versions of this story. This is the last one. AoS.
BATTLING taxi driver Alex McIlveen faced down the Glasgow Airport terror suspects ... and his courage cost him his favourite pair of trainers and a £30 parking fine. Dad-of-two Alex punched and kicked the two men after they crashed a Jeep Cherokee loaded with gas canisters into the door of Terminal One. The 45-year-old booted one of the suspects, whose body was covered in flames, as hard as he could between the legs. But the man didn't appear to feel the blow, and a police doctor told Alex later that he'd damaged a tendon in his foot.

After the drama, police confiscated Alex's trainers for forensic tests. And when he went back to the airport to pick up his cab, he was stunned to find that he'd been given a parking ticket. Alex said: "The police took all the clothes I 'd been wearing so I lost my Nike trainers. They're a good pair too. I didn't get out of the police station until late on Saturday night and I found the parking ticket on my cab next day. I couldn't believe it."

Alex, of Glasgow, was one of several hero Scots who took on the men who targeted the airport on Saturday afternoon. He punched and kicked the passenger from the Jeep, believed to be Iraqi doctor Bilal Abdulla. Then he went after the driver of the vehicle, even though the heavily-built man was in flames after apparently turning himself into a human torch.

#2  It takes berserker courage, I'd think, to take on a man in flames and eager to share them. Of course, I've never seen a real fight, so I'm just guessing.

(Continued from last night: twobyfour, the then future Mr. Wife gave me that advice not long after we'd gone running together for the only time. I was a gymnast, you see, he a marathoner. He left me a quarter mile out, saying he couldn't run that slowly, ran his customary five miles, and still beat me back to the dormitory. So that 0.66 second window wouldn't get me very far. On the other hand, he was terribly proud of my one-armed push-ups. ;->)

Someone was hosing him down but the flames seemed to jump up again just as it looked like they had gone out.

The Hero Cabbie Dad-of-two Alex,

"I've heard people say since that he was shouting 'Allah!' but I didn't hear that. It just sounded like a lot of c**p to me."
It was obvious the driver wanted into the boot of the Jeep for something and I was worried about what it was.

"I ran for the guy and punched him twice in the face with pretty good right hooks. Then I kicked him with full force right in the balls but he didn't go down. He just kept on babbling his rubbish. I couldn't believe that he was still standing. I know I would have been floored by that kind of kick."

This ties into TWs theory that the terrorist muslime Drs. used Narcotics or some type/s of drugs that made them immune to pain.

Alex continued to take on the man, who was lashing out with his fists. He recalled: "He was a big guy and I'm not really a fighter, but his punches were wild and I managed to dodge them and make some good strikes myself. Luckily, more people joined in and we managed to beat the guy down. The police apparently caught the other man. I don't think the policeman I saw at the scene drew his baton during the whole thing. He should have given it to me - I'd have leathered those guys with it."

LOL, Cheers mate!

Alex added: "After the two guys were restrained, my memory gets a bit blurred. I think I got hit with some of the CS spray the police were firing at them. The next thing I knew I was waiting in a room at the airport for an ambulance with another member of the public. He'd been badly beaten by the guy in the T-shirt and he had a broken leg. But the paramedics still treated the burned guy first He was being held by police in the next room."

[jeebus, triage, treated the terrorist first]

Alex spent hours at a Paisley police station telling detectives everything he could remember about the fight. He said: "It was only after getting there that I really began to think about what had happened. I started shaking like a leaf. A police doctor looked me over and said I had damaged a tendon in my foot as a result of the kick I gave the second guy. I've got a few pains in my back as well but apart from that I'm unscathed. I didn't get out of the police station until late on Saturday night. An officer eventually took me home but the police insisted on taking away all the clothes I had been wearing."

#9  I can't believe Alex got just a parking ticket. He admits to punching and kicking the burning victim of the car wreck - that has to be felonious assault. Especially since even fighting in self-defense is usually illegal in that jurisdiction. In all seriousness, he really should be talking to a lawyer and not the press.
Posted by: Glenmore || 07/05/2007 7:08 Comments || Top||

#10  It wasn't even self-defence. What possible threat could a man burning over 90% of his body pose to the cabbie? This was clearly a vicious religiously motivated hate crime. He should be sent to a PC reeducation camp.

That would have been the reaction last week.

#17  The day after my son was born it was street sweeping day in front of my house...

I received a ticket in spite of the fact the meter Fascist was told what was going on. My appeal failed, so I went to the City council rep, who paid the ticket.

The city council member priobably paid the ticket herself, because of the fear I would go to the local newspaper, and the parking extortion department would have had more trouble than they wanted because they had the unfortunate problem of having a ticket Fascist without common sense.

#20  GOOD NEWS UPDATE

5 July 2007
CABBIE HAS FINE WAIVED
Brave cabbie has parking fine waived
POLICE have cancelled the parking ticket given to a hero cabbie who took on terror suspects at Glasgow Airport.

Alex McIlveen, 45, left his taxi and laid into two men after a Jeep Cherokee loaded with gas canisters crashed into Terminal One.

But when the dad-of-two returned to his car the next morning, after hours of police questioning, he found he had been given a £30 penalty.

At first, police insisted Alex would have to pay up.

But, after a call from the Record, they agreed to drop the fine.

A police spokeswoman said: "We realise there were exceptional circumstances at the weekend and we are pleased to say we will not be pursuing Mr McIlveen's ticket."

-------------------------------------------------
My interpretation...
"Our operators have been spending too much time answering irate phone calls. We have work to do, as this is a police department... Pursuing this fine will cost us much more than 30 pounds... "
------------------------------------------------

Alex said: "I'm delighted they have now realised it would be unfair to charge me.

"I've ended up losing quite a lot of money already after spending so much time getting interviewed by police when I should have been out driving."

He faced down the terror suspects after dropping off a fare.

He booted one of them as hard as he could between the legs.

A police doctor told Alex later that he had damaged a tendon in his foot.

After the drama, police confiscated Alex's trainers for forensic tests.

Posted by: Mike || 07/05/2007 13:32 Comments || Top||

#22  Problem was, Alex wasn't aiming for the right places. A fist into the larynx will ALWAYS have results, regardless of what the pos is high on. Some other good places to try that will incapacitate is to hit the collarbones with the heel of your hand. Do it hard enough, and the perp has a hard time raising his arms. A good kick to the groin usually works, but if it doesn't, try the inside of the hip just above the groin. If you've got a weapon handy (anything hard will do), go for the kneecaps, elbows, the back of the neck, or the side of the head just in front of the ears. Do enough of these things and the human body will collapse, no matter what the perp is high on. The human body can take only so much abuse before it stops working. If the American public knew half of what I've been taught, the politicians would be terrorized just by the thought. Hmmmm....

#23  Once you have incapacitated him, try to find the makings for smores. It would be best to wait until after all accellerants are consumed.

Lebanese born doctor linked to both U.K. terror plots
British authorities investigating the fast-moving U.K. terror plot now suspect that Iraqi-born doctor Bilal Abdulla and Lebanese-born Khaled Ahmed, the two men who tried to bomb Glasgow International Airport, also attempted the two London car bombings a day earlier , CBS News has learned.

The Lebanese doctor was the driver of the Jeep Cherokee that was loaded with gas cylinders and rammed into the entrance of Glasgow International Airport and then set it on fire last Saturday. British intelligence services also believe that the failed car bombings in London and Glasgow bear the fingerprints of al Qaeda in Iraq. Intelligence sources tell CBS News that the people behind the attempts were directly recruited by Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, the present leader of the terror group's Iraq franchise.
I'd guess that ownership of al-Tawhid devolved to Abu when Zark began decomposition. Al-Tawhid's been active in Europe before, and it recruited from Jordan, Leb and Syria. That'd clarify why there aren't any Paks involved, which was the part that floored me.
Police investigating the plot had arrested eight people Tuesday, including at least six suspects trained as doctors, including a man of Indian nationality arrested in Australia. Sources close to the investigation tell CBS News that two or three arrests were likely to be seen in Britain by the end of the week and that some of the arrests will be of British nationals.

Later Tuesday, two men were arrested in northwestern England under the Terrorism Act, but a police statement said it was "too early to confirm whether or not these arrests are linked to recent events in London and Glasgow." Sky News, citing law enforcement sources, reported that the suspects — two men — were arrested in Blackburn, England after they were seen trying to collect a number of gas canisters from an industrial site.
That one turned out to have something to do with their pot garden. I'm not sure what, since that's not my line of interest...

CAIRO, Egypt - The suicide bomber who killed 22 people when he blew himself up in a U.S. mess hall in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul was a Saudi medical student, an Arab newspaper reported Monday.

The Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat identified him as 20-year-old Ahmed Said Ahmed al-Ghamdi, citing unnamed friends of the man’s father. The friends said members of an Iraqi resistance group contacted al-Ghamdi’s father to tell him his son was the suicide bomber who carried out the Dec. 21 attack, the deadliest on an American installation in Iraq.

#6  The allegations against the doctors, however, fit a pattern of Islamist terrorists often being well-educated, especially in science and medicine. Al-Qaeda's deputy leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, from Egypt, is a medically trained doctor. Several of the September 11 hijackers undertook university studies.

Caribbean-Latin America
Weapons found on ship sailing out of Haifa to Nicaragua
Spanish customs officers uncovered more than 1,000 weapons on ship en route from Israel to Nicaragua during a standard cargo inspection on Tuesday, the governor of the southern Andalusia region announced Wednesday. According to a report in AFP, Governor Juan Jose Lopez Garzon said officers in the Algesiras port confiscated 400 handguns and 300 rifles from a container on the Maersk Detroit. There were also 500 air guns, the only weapons declared on the manifest.

The firearms were detected by a new US-funded scanner whose use is obligatory on all ships bound for the United States.
The scanner *worked*? Someone's gonna lose their job for that oversight.
The Maersk Detroit, had sailed from Haifa and was due to dock in the US before continuing on to Nicaragua. The ship was allowed to continue towards Italy after the container holding the weapons was unloaded.

#3  The 'bound for the United States' is the vessel, not necessarily the cargo. Container ships tend to follow a route. The ship bound for Panama, the Libra J, goes next to Guatemala, then makes port calls in New Orleans and Houston.

Two theories:

The route from Haifa to Nicaragua is:

1. Haifa, Israel
2. East Port Said Port, Egypt
3. Algeciras, Spain
4. Manzanillo Terminal, Panama
5. Puerto Cortes Terminal, Honduras
6. Managua, Nicaragua (by truck from either Panama or Honduras)

Let's say it ends up at either Panama or Honduras. The container could be reshipped to any other country in the region, like Columbia, Venezuela, or Mexico. Or, it could be stopped at any point along the way to Nicaragua and relieved of all cargo except for the air rifles. Or, it was meant for Daniel Ortega's friends.

Note that, according to the Maersk schedule, it is off-loaded and reloaded at each port onto a different vessel. That leaves the possibility of it being re-designated for another port. Or, it could have been from any of the ports along the way, even prior to Haifa, but marked as originating from Haifa.

Now, had it stayed on the Maersk Detroit, the route is:

1. Algeciras, Spain
2. Gioia Tauro, Italy
3. Port Said, Egypt
4. Suez Canal Zone Terminal, Egypt
5. Salalah, Oman
6. Jebel Ali Dubai, UAE
7. Jawaharlal Nehru Terminal, Mumbai India

Again, it could be diverted at any point on the route, given any unscrupulous shipping agent, someone with knowledge of import and export, or a combination of.

It was a lucky stroke that the Libra J makes an eventual port call in the US.

#5  Well, sounds like something fishy is going on here. Interesting way to obscure the trail of who did what. My reaction here would be to act like nothing happened, remove the guns when noone was looking, and replace it with a GPS tracker and put hidden cameras in the container. Or something like that. You'd think you'd zero in on someone that way, then you can pull on the string and see what comes up.

#6  Considering that each container is numbered, it would be possible to track the load by going through the cargo lists and following the load to its destination.

However, in this case I suspect the authorities wanted a publicize a high-profile bust.

#8  I understand that some countries, like Mexico, which are very restrictive on gun ownership, do freely allow ownership of air rifles. The 500 air rifles may have been a red herring for an arms shipment to one of those countries.

Maybe the leftists in Mexico are really pissed about loosing the election.

Failed car bombers wanted to work in Australia
Two of the men arrested over the weekend terror attacks in Britain applied to work as doctors in Western Australian but were rejected - and at least one is related to the young Gold Coast doctor set to spend a week in secure custody.

As new links emerged in the car bomb investigation last night, a Brisbane magistrate gave police approval to detain Mohamed Haneef - arrested at Brisbane airport on Monday night on suspicion of being connected to a terrorist group - for another four days.

Dr Haneef is the cousin of Sabeel Ahmed, 26, one of seven suspects detained in Britain, and may have been related to another suspect arrested when a Jeep Cherokee exploded at Glasgow airport.

The West Australian branch of the Australian Medical Association, which runs a recruitment agency in the state, last night revealed that Dr Ahmed and his brother Kafeel had applied for work but had been rejected.

Dr Haneef and Sabeel Ahmed worked together in Britain.

According to reports, Kafeel is also known as Khalid Ahmed, who suffered life-threatening burns when he drove the Jeep packed with petrol and gas canisters into the Glasgow terminal building.

London's The Daily Telegraph said Dr Haneef and the two Ahmed brothers were born and raised in Bangalore, India, and graduated with medical degrees from the Rajiv Gandhi University.

AMA state president Geoff Dobbs said the association had also rejected an application from Gold Coast doctor Mohammed Asif Ali, who worked with Dr Haneef and drove him to the airport before the suspect's laptop was found in his car.

"We believed their qualifications and references did not meet the standards required in Western Australia," Professor Dobbs said, adding that one of the three had made repeated applications for work. The Medical Board of Western Australia last night refused to comment on the case, while its Queensland equivalent offered no fresh information.

Dr Ali, who has been interviewed by police but not accused of any crime, was yesterday moved from his Southport unit to a police safehouse after being besieged by the world's media.

Dr Haneef is the first person to be detained and questioned under Australia's tough new counter-terrorism laws and is being held at the Brisbane Watchhouse.

He has had visits from Indian consular officials but has declined an offer of a lawyer.

The 27-year-old had obtained emergency leave from the hospital on Monday and booked a one-way ticket to India to see his wife and new baby but was arrested, having apparently been under surveillance for several days.

Before leaving Britain last year, Dr Haneef left his mobile phone SIM card with Sabeel Ahmed. Reports suggest the prime suspect in the bombings, Jordanian-trained doctor Mohammed Asha, contacted Dr Haneef via email and text messages. Dr Haneef's family insist he is innocent.

A Scotland Yard investigator arrived in Brisbane yesterday to assist the investigation.

With Australian police still insisting no threat had been made against local targets, the British the Government lowered the threat level from "critical", its highest level, to "severe".

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said there was no intelligence to suggest another attack was imminent, but urged vigilance.

The eight detained suspects are doctors or have medical links, and a British cleric claims to have been warned by an al-Qaeda figure in Iraq in April that "those who cure you will kill you".

Police found suicide notes left by the occupants of the Jeep, which allegedly indicated they intended to detonate the vehicle while still inside.

Allegations emerged that Bilal Abdulla, a suspected passenger in the Jeep, was associated with a hardline Muslim group in 2004.

Police have been interviewing Dr Haneef's colleagues, some of whom trained in India and worked in Britain, amid fears of a "sleeper cell" in Australia.

The case has renewed debate over overseas-trained doctors and prompted Queensland Senate candidate and One Nation founder Pauline Hanson to call for free medical degrees for Australians to bolster the system.

Bomb docs tried first to work in Australia
A SINISTER twist emerged in the doctor bombings case last night when it emerged two of the UK suspects tried to get jobs in Australia. Brothers Kafeel Ahmed and Sabeel Ahmed applied for jobs with the Western Australia Health Service but were rejected on character grounds.
Someone noticed!
It was also revealed the pair were cousins of Gold Coast Hospital registrar Dr Mohammed Haneef, who remains in custody. The second man arrested in Queensland, Mohammed Asif Ali, had also applied in WA and was rejected.

WA medical officials confirmed one of the brothers applied using different names on "several occasions". "We are co-operating with the AFP and doing everything we can to assist them," Australian Medical Association WA spokesman Geoff Dobbs said.

Australian security officials were last night seeking extra time to interrogate Dr Haneef about his alleged links with the British doctor bombing plot. The Australian Federal Police requested the extension due to the massive amount of information contained on Dr Haneef's laptop computer.
Love those savvy terrorists and their computers, cell phones, PalmPilots...
Police are sifting through 18,000 files searching for links between the Gold Coast Hospital registrar and the botched car bomb plot in London and Glasgow. No charges have been laid.

The latest development comes as close links emerged between some of the eight suspects arrested over the failed bomb attacks. Dr Haneef is believed to be the cousin of Kafeel Ahmed, the alleged driver of the 4WD that rammed the Glasgow airport terminal building. Ahmed's brother, Sabeel, 26 – who was arrested in Liverpool on the weekend – studied with Dr Haneef and in 2005 worked at the same UK hospital as the Queensland recruit. Police sources told The Independent newspaper Dr Haneef had allegedly been in phone and email contact with the Ahmed brothers in the run-up to the bomb attempts. The Ahmed and Haneef families live near each other in Bangalore.
As has been noted so often here at Rantburg: Muslim terrorism is all in the family.

British Detective arrives in Australia to interview Doctor
SENIOR Scotland Yard counter-terrorism investigator has arrived in Brisbane to question an Indian doctor detained over the foiled UK bomb plot. The chief inspector from the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Unit will assist Australian Federal Police (AFP) in quizzing 27-year-old Indian national Mohammed Haneef about the foiled attacks in London and Glasgow.

But the senior British officer and AFP are on a tight deadline, having a court order to detain Dr Haneef without charge only until late tonight.

The unnamed officer this morning evaded a media scrum at Brisbane International Airport. An AFP spokesman said British authorities had asked for the officer's privacy to be respected. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said from London they preferred the officer's identity not to be revealed in the media, but confirmed the officer left yesterday on a flight to Australia.

Dr Haneef, who has been working as a registrar at the Gold Coast Hospital, is one of six doctors arrested in connection with the plot and the only person detained outside Britain. British health authorities have confirmed he worked part-time in 2005 at the same hospital in north-western England as another arrested doctor.

A second doctor from the Gold Coast Hospital, Dr Mohammed Asif Ali, has been cleared after questioning.

588 US troops re-enlist in Baghdad on the 4th, 161 naturalized
From the Department of Defense:

BAGHDAD, Iraq, July 4, 2007 - Hundreds of troops gathered at Al Faw Palace for the Multi-National Force-Iraq Reenlistment, Naturalization and Independence Day Ceremony today at Camp Victory. During the ceremony, 588 troops reenlisted and 161 were naturalized as American citizens.

Army Gen. David Petraeus, commanding general, MNF-I, gave opening remarks before administering the Oath of Enlistment."This morning we pay tribute to the American ideals we all hold so dear in several significant ways," he said.

"First, by conducting what surely is the largest reenlistment event ever held in Iraq and perhaps in our Armed Forces' history, then by celebrating the granting of American citizenship to a group of troopers who have already pledged their loyalty to our nation by putting their lives on the line for it, and finally by observing the 231st birthday of our great country," he said.

Petraeus said the troops who reenlisted on Independence Day, most while serving on a second or third deployment to a combat zone, have made a decision based on far more than any bonus they may receive.

"No bonus, no matter the size, can adequately compensate you for the contribution each of you has made and continues to make as a custodian of our nation's defenses," he said. "Nor can any amount of money compensate you adequately for the sacrifices you make serving here in Iraq or the burdens your loved ones face at home in your absence. And we certainly cannot put a price on the freedoms you defend or those we are trying to help the Iraqis establish and safeguard here in the land of the two rivers."

Petraeus then dedicated the Independence Day ceremony in honor of two soldiers who died fighting for America before they could be sworn in as citizens.

"Sgt. Kimel Watt and Spc. Farid Elazzouzi, who would have been in your ranks here this morning, were lost in recent combat action, giving the last full measure of devotion for a country that would have become fully theirs today," Petraeus said. "Words can not express the admiration I feel for these two men or the sadness I feel for our nation's loss and their families' sacrifice."

Petraeus said the deaths are reminders that freedom comes at a very high cost, which must never be forgotten. Like these two soldiers, who fought and died with the American flag on their shoulders, he said the troops being naturalized as U.S. citizens were most deserving.

"When you enlisted into the Armed Forces you swore to support and defend a Constitution that did not yet fully apply to you," Petraeus said. "You chose to endure the same sacrifices as your fellow comrades in arms to preserve the freedom of a land that was not yet fully yours. You accepted that you might have to pay the ultimate price on behalf of a nation to which you did not fully belong. Now, you will officially become citizens of the United States, a country to which each of you has already borne true faith and allegiance in your hearts and your deeds."

Five killed in Swat blast
A policeman and four civilians were killed in attacks on Wednesday in a mountain region with links to the leaders of a besieged mosque in the capital, officials said. The civilians were killed by a bomb blast targeting a police vehicle in the conservative but normally peaceful northwestern region of Swat, said local police officer Saeed Khan. A district police chief and his driver were also wounded in the blast, Khan said, adding that it was not clear whether a grenade was thrown at the vehicle or whether a roadside bomb went off. Earlier a rocket was fired into a police station, killing a constable and injuring two others, officials said. The blast followed calls on a private Islamist FM radio station in the area to launching jihad against government in retaliation for the mosque confrontation.

6 soldiers killed in North Waziristan suicide attack
A suicide car bomber attacked a military convoy near North Waziristan on Wednesday, killing eight people, including six soldiers, and injuring 12 others, a military spokesman and witnesses said.

ISPR Director General Maj Gen Waheed Arshad told Daily Times on the phone from Islamabad that the convoy was heading towards Bannu from Miranshah when a suicide bomber attacked it in front of a madrassa in the Gurbaz area. “Six jawans were martyred in what appears to be a suicide attack,” Arshad said, adding that linking the attack to the events in Islamabad could only be “speculation”. “One can speculate but there is no evidence … the army has been attacked in this area before,” he said.

A passenger van driver in Bannu told Daily Times that a white car smashed into the last truck traveling in the convoy from behind and exploded. “The bomber signaled me to slow down as he drove past my vehicle. I thought he was a highway man and slowed my van, but moments later I saw the man crash his vehicle in the truck,” he said, adding that military helicopters airlifted the killed and wounded soldiers. A civilian killed in the attack has been identified as a student of Darul Uloom Sadiqia where the attack took place. “One madrassa student was killed and another five were injured in the attack,” Noor Islam, a madrassa student, told Daily Times.

Murder, arson cases against mullahs
Police on Wednesday registered multiple cases of murder, attempted murder, arson, ransacking and disruption of government business against Lal Masjid chief cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz and his deputy and brother Abdul Rashid Ghazi. The FIR was registered under Sections 302 and 324 of the PPC and ATA 6/7 at Aabpara police station, on the grounds that the clerics were responsible for Tuesday’s clashes between militant students and security forces in which at least 16 people were killed. This was the seventh FIR registered against the brothers in the last six months, during which they have repeatedly defied the government’s writ in the capital with anti-vice vigilante actions.

They had previously been booked for kidnapping an alleged brothel owner, kidnapping police officials, and kidnapping several Chinese nationals they accused of prostitution. Four of the previous cases were also registered at Aabpara police station and one each at Margalla and Kohsar police stations. The government has announced amnesty for all Lal Masjid students who surrender, except those wanted in other cases and the two cleric brothers.

Will the government give in yet again? Or stand firm this time? (I inserted a snarky reference to a certain male performance pharmaceutical here the first time but my comment got filtered.)
We know, and the government must, what will happen if they give in - further loss of credibility and escalation of Islamist demands. What happens if they don't? Manageable street violence? All out civil war? Somewhere in between (my guess)? This confrontation has hit awfully close to 'home' for the government - if they don't fight back now, they should be booking tickets to London.

Chief cleric held, told to order surrender
Lal Masjid chief cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz was arrested on Wednesday night as he tried escape from the mosque complex in a dress, heels, and ladies' underwear burqa, officials said. His wife Ume Hassan, principal of Jamia Hafsa, was also arrested, Interior Ministry spokesman Brig (r) Javed Iqbal Cheema told reporters. He said the cleric had not surrendered, but was trying to escape. The maulana was arrested at the nearby FG Girls High School, where policewomen were screening girl madrassa students who had surrendered. Upon discovery that one of these was the mosque’s leader, security forces immediately frisked him away.
And he *liked* it.
ARY television later reported that Religious Affairs Minister Ejazul Haq had met with Aziz and asked him to tell the Lal Masjid students to surrender. Haq met Aziz at a secret location where the latter is being detained and asked him to record a statement for television appealing to his students to surrender.
"We're for it for sure, Abdul. Put your false eyelashes back on and *work* that white flag!"
"Hokay, chief. Just make sure they get my good side."
The channel claimed Aziz’s deputy Abdul Rasheed Ghazi had also agreed to surrender after the arrest of his brother and talks with Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidry.

1200 surrender at Lal Masjid
Five gunship helicopters hovered over Lal Masjid on Wednesday as sporadic firing between militant students and security forces continued for a second day. Several hundred students surrendered to the government as security forces surrounded the mosque complex and announced amnesty for those who laid down their arms. However, many remained holed up inside, though the chief cleric of the mosque, Abdul Aziz Ghazi, was arrested trying to escape in a burqa.

The government confirmed the deaths of 16 people and injuries to 98 from the clashes, but unofficial reports put the death toll at 20 and 200 injured, some of them critically. Interior Ministry spokesman Brig (r) Javed Iqbal Cheema said 1,100-1,200 students had surrendered by 10:30pm on Wednesday night, but several were still inside the mosque along with deputy chief cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi. A delegation of ulema entered the complex at around 10:15pm to negotiate with the mosque administration to release more students.

Earlier, a gunbattle erupted between the students and security forces after two big blasts at around 5:00pm. Security forces fired teargas shells and moved armoured personnel carriers around Lal Masjid. However, an imminent operation was put on hold as small groups of students continued to pour out the mosque all day.

Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani said that the ultimatum given to the students to surrender was being extended to minimise the loss of life in an operation. A shoot-on-sight curfew was imposed in the early hours of Wednesday. Paramilitary troops shot dead two men as they took a morning walk near FG Girls School, G 6/1-4, sources told Daily Times. They said that Abdul Ghafoor Qureshi, a section officer, and his friend were unaware that a curfew had been imposed. AFP reported that paramilitary troops shot dead an apparently mentally ill man as he wandered close to the mosque area.

Adiala Jail Superintendent Shahid Saleem Baig told Daily Times that 128 of the surrendering students had been sent to jail, but their detention was temporary and they would be released after background checks.

Meanwhile, security forces continued their build up for the possible operation. The three-layered plan for the operation puts the army on the front line, Rangers at the second line and Islamabad police and Punjab Constabulary at the third line. Troops from the Rawalpindi-based 111 Brigade and Mangla were also called in.

Explosions heard near radical mosque in Pakistan
Several explosions were heard near a radical mosque besieged by security forces in the Pakistani capital Thursday, hours after its top cleric was captured trying to sneak out of the complex disguised in a woman's burka. It was not immediately clear what caused the series of heavy blasts, which lit up the sky near Islamabad's Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, before dawn between bursts of gunfire. Troops ringing the mosque pushed reporters far back from the area.

#1  Asia Times with more background

KARACHI - A fierce battle to seize Taliban and al-Qaeda assets in Pakistan has begun from the capital Islamabad, where hundreds of militants holed up in the radical Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) are surrounded by 12,000 Pakistani troops.

Significantly, Lal Masjid has become the rallying point for jihadis against the establishment. The country's jihadis have traditionally fought under the umbrella of the state in Kashmir or in Afghanistan - not against their own government.
[..]
tanks fired shells at Lal Masjid in the early hours of Thursday, apparently destroying its front wall.
[..]The president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League, Chaudhary Shujaat, and Ghazi spoke on Wednesday night on possible terms of surrender, but suddenly Ghazi changed his mind and refused to lay down his weapons. It is suspected that militants inside the mosque forced Ghazi to take a stand and made it clear to him that they would fight until the last man and the last bullet.
[..]
Interrogators of the students and Aziz can be expected to focus on several key issues:
# Possible channels of communication between Lal Masjid and al-Qaeda deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri; Tahir Yuldashev, leader of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan; and Maulana Jalaluddin Haqqani, deputy to the Taliban's Mullah Omar.
# The strategic assets of the Taliban, such as training centers in Pakistan. Lal Masjid has been a recruiting center for the Taliban from where youths were sent for training to North Waziristan and South Waziristan, as well as to the Swat Valley in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Malakand in Balochistan province.
# Financial channels - how money collected from all over Pakistan through charities and philanthropists makes its way to Taliban and al-Qaeda members.

Iraq
Iraqi Security Forces Detain Insurgent Religious Leader in Mosul
Iraqi Security Forces detained an alleged insurgent religious leader in the Mosul area July 3. He is responsible for the planning of attacks in the Mosul area on Iraqi and Coalition Forces.

With coalition advisers present for support, Iraqi forces raided several residences in a Mosul neighborhood and captured their primary target without incident. Three other suspicious individuals present during the raid were also detained. The primary target of this operation is alleged to be an insurgent religious leader in Mosul and plays a significant role in planning attacks on Iraqi and Coalition Forces. The insurgent group is alleged to have ties with extremist groups. No Iraqi or Coalition Forces were injured during this operation.

#1  Is this the new guy that was replacing the "old" guy that got captured/killed on May 31th? If so, way to go Iraqis. If not, then still, way to go Iraqis.

This seems to fit into the plan as Bill Roggio laid it out on By Bill Roggio on June 21, 2007

The concurrent operations in the Baghdad Belts, combined with the effort to secure Baghdad and the Special Forces raids on al Qaeda’s network will place a great strain on the terror group if the momentum is carried through the summer.

Iraqi and Coalition Forces are striking hard in the heart of al Qaeda and Sunni insurgent havens in Diyala, Babil, and Anbar while squeezing the terror groups in the capital and conducting intelligence driven raids to keep the enemy off balance.

Al Qaeda can chose to stand and fight, and may do so in some places. But will eventually attempt to flee the hot zones in central Iraq for safer grounds.

This will push them further from Iraq’s center of gravity, while placing them at risk while attempting to reestablish their networks. Northwestern Iraq – Niwena, Salahadin, and Kirkuk - will be a likely destination, however some of the most experienced Iraqi Army units are operating in the region.

Some of them are taking up blocking positions to prevent the infiltration of terrorists attempting to escape Operation Phantom Thunder.

#2  Mohammed Younis al-Hayali was the "old guy"

The new guy is so special he has no name...

And with a turban, a beard, and a long schmock he really blends in...

But, he is a "man of God", y'know, or what they call "Man of God" there... Whacking infidels and apostates gets you to the virgins kinda guy... So we must see who this guy is... Them we can put up a picture with appropriate captioning...

Coalition Forces kill 25, detain 5 and uncover caches in Diyala
Coalition Forces killed 25 terrorists, detained five suspected terrorists and uncovered weapons caches during an operation northeast of Baqubah June 30 – July 2.

Coalition Forces conducted the three-day operation near the town of Mukhisa targeting al-Qaeda operatives in support of Operation Arrowhead Ripper.

During a patrol along the Diyala River near Baqubah, Coalition Forces were engaged by three men with rifles and military-style assault vests from across the river. Coalition Forces returned fire and the enemy fire subsided, but enemy reinforced its numbers and escalated to include rocket-propelled grenades.

Coalition Forces determined the enemy fire was coming from an organized terrorist force that had moved into a nearby palm grove. Coalition Forces fired and maneuvered on the enemy and called in close air support from a fixed-wing aircraft. During the engagement Coalition Forces killed an estimated 25 terrorists and the enemy fire stopped. The patrol also observed secondary explosions coming from within the palm grove.

Throughout the firefight, a nearby mosque was broadcasting chants for local residents to “rise up against” the Coalition Forces; the chants were later replaced by a voice that seemed to be giving orders.

Two suspected terrorists were injured in the engagement and were transported to a military medical facility for treatment.

Searches of the area during the operation uncovered weapons caches containing fire extinguishers rigged as improvised explosive devices, mortar rounds, RPG rounds and small arms. Coalition Forces detained five suspected terrorists for their alleged involvement with al-Qaeda in the area.

“We continue to crack down on al-Qaeda operatives, no matter where they’re hiding,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. “The terrorists’ brand of violence is inconsistent with Iraqi values, and that violence has no place in the future of Iraq.”

Coalition Forces net 12 suspects in Adhamiyah
Three suspects with known terrorist connections and nine other associates were detained by Coalition Forces in the Adhamiyah District of the Iraqi capital July 2.

The suspects were seized without incident by Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, operating in eastern Baghdad under the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

The troops detained the suspects after receiving information on a meeting site of this alleged terrorist cell. The detention of the 12 suspects is part of the 2nd “Falcon” BCT’s ongoing efforts to secure the Adhamiyah neighborhood and rid it of terrorists and sectarian violence. Several of detained are suspected to have direct involvement in the deaths of five American Soldiers June 21.

“The capture of these individuals will likely put a temporary end to the IED threat in this area. We expect the drop in violence will allow the local population to come out from under the burden of violence that has kept them isolated for so long,” said Maj. Charles Masarachia, operations officer with the Falcon Brigade. “As we increase our dialogue with this community, our ability to provide them security and allow the government of Iraq to provide them essential services will increase, ultimately eliminating the conditions that foster insurgencies.”

Operation "Iron Blitz" captures 25 insurgents in June
Over the past 30 days, Multi-National Division-Baghdad Soldiers captured 25 suspected insurgents during Operation “Iron Blitz” northwest of the Iraqi capital.

The suspects, many believed to be tied to insurgent cells responsible for the emplacement of improvised explosive devices, sectarian violence and indirect fire attacks, were captured by Soldiers of the 1st “Ironhorse” Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. “These (terrorists) were targeting not only Coalition Forces and Iraqi Security Forces, they were targeting the Iraqi people to escalate sectarian tensions in the area,” said Lt. Col. Peter Andrysiak, deputy commander of the Ironhorse Brigade. “The capture of these individuals has lead to a significant decrease in insurgent activity in our area.”

The Ironhorse Brigade was able to target insurgents successfully in northwestern Baghdad neighborhoods thanks to an influx of support, in the form of tips, from the local community, Andrysiak said. “The volunteers who have recently stepped forward to provide security in their own neighborhoods provided much of the information used to capture these individuals,” he said.

A grassroots effort by tribal leaders in Abu Ghraib, Taji, and Saab al Bor areas, to reject Al Qaeda and work to reconcile with the government of Iraq, Iraqi Security Forces and the Coalition, is aimed at putting an end to sectarian violence in those communities.

With 25 suspected insurgents captured in June, Andrysiak said communities in northwest Baghdad are headed in the right direction. “By bringing these individuals to justice, we have seen a decrease in the violence in our area,” Andrysiak added. “With the help of the volunteers, we are optimistic the violence will not return.”

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel repatriates 4 Jordanian Terrorists to Jordan
Haaretz & AP

Israel on Thursday repatriated four Jordanian prisoners who were jailed for life for killing two Israel Defense Forces soldiers. Jordanian security officials confirmed the men had arrived home to serve out their sentences [and to be interrogated according to Jordanian SOP].

The prisoners, who will serve out their rest of their terms in Jordanian jails, were transfered after the High Court on Wednesday rejected an appeal against the move.

An Israeli official said Israel has received an assurance from Jordan that the four would serve at least 18 more months in prison in Jordan...The four were named as cousins Khaled Abu-Ghalyoun and Yousef Abu-Ghalyoun, Abdul-Karim al-Sanee' and Sultan Ajlouni [who are now in their late 30s or 40s].

Hamas threats keep crossing closed
Hamas's threat to open fire at throngs of Palestinians stranded in Egypt has thwarted Israeli plans to open the Kerem Shalom crossing to southern Gaza on Wednesday to let the travelers return to their homes, defense officials told The Jerusalem Post.
For which the Israelis are blamed since the closed crossing causes 'economic strangulation.' Sheesh.
According to the officials, 6,000 Palestinians have been marooned on the Egyptian side of Rafah since Hamas's violent takeover of the Gaza Strip three weeks ago and the closure of the Rafah crossing into Egypt. Palestinians shelled the crossing last week, forcing its closure after it had been used as an alternative to the Karni cargo crossing to send food and other supplies into Gaza.

During his meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at the Sharm e-Sheikh summit last week, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he would work to relieve the humanitarian crisis on the Egyptian side of Rafah.
You can say that as long as you don't do anything about it.
In an effort to allow the stranded Palestinians to return home, the IDF recently offered to Egypt to open the Kerem Shalom crossing - which connects Israel, Gaza and Egypt - to pedestrian travel. Egypt contacted Hamas and, according to Israeli officials, was told that if Kerem Shalom was opened they would attack the crossing with mortars and gunfire, even at the price of killing thousands of Palestinians. Israel immediately canceled the plans and is waiting to see if Egypt succeeds in convincing Hamas to allow Kerem Shalom to be used to help the stranded Palestinians.

Shopkeeper, two others shot in southern Thailand
Terrorists Presumed insurgents killed a shopkeeper and wounded two other local residents in shooting attacks in rural Pattani Thursday morning. Chanapourn Roteweerawong was shot dead at her drugstore in Pattani's Panare district. Afterwards, a suspicious package was placed in front of the business. A bomb disposal squad was inspecting the suspect package and searched the area for other possible hazards.

Meanwhile, Pattani's Yaring district, two villagers – Ahamayawaree Me-ngo and Pareeda Dahadee -- were shot and wounded by unknown gunmen. The victims are now being treated in hospital.

Meanwhile, in further developments in Nongjik district, two young men suspected of involvement in the bombing of an Army patrol have been detained by police for questioning in regard the incident which wounded three soldiers on a routine patrol as it passed a public health center. Both suspects are students of a local Muslim pondok school.

Three soldiers wounded in Pattani bombing
A bomb blast wounded three soldiers in front of a public health centre in Pattani on Thursday morning. Three soldiers were patrolling outside the public health centre in Nongjik district when the explosive device was detonated. The victims were rushed to hospital.

Before the blast which injured the military men, another roadside bomb went off nearby, but no one was wounded, although there were reports of an ambush and a gun battle between security forces and suspected insurgents in the district. Officials are clearing the roads in the area, where trees were felled and spikes were strewn.

In Narathiwat, a bomb was detonated in a market in Sungai Kolok district. The 5-kg device exploded at 7 am, destroying several shops but no one was injured. A police inspection is underway, and mobile phone signals have been cut off in the area to prevent a possible followup bombing.

Thai State Railways workers have fixed sabotaged railway tracks after presumed insurgents removed more than 50 bolts from sleepers in Yala's Raman district early Thursday morning. Soldiers patrolling the rail line found that 56 bolts had been removed from a portion of the tracks between Yala and the Banmaikaen train station. Train service was temporarily suspended while railway workers repaired the track.

Search continues for Catholic priest kidnapped by Muslim gunmen
Dozens of U.S.-trained commandos have joined the search for an Italian Roman Catholic priest taken captive by Muslim gunmen in the troubled southern Philippines. Philippines military chief General Hermogenes Esperon said nearly 2000 soldiers, backed by four navy boats and four helicopters, had been searching for nearly a month now in the Zamboanga peninsula to free Giancarlo Bossi, held by a rogue faction of Muslim rebels. "We have limited our operations in a few areas in the south," Gen Esperon said. "We're not letting up on the operations. It's just that we don't want to compromise the safety of Father Bossi." There have been no sightings of or contacts with the priest since he was abducted after saying mass on June 10.

On Wednesday night, an Italian lawmaker arrived in Manila to work with Philippine officials on the case. "Let me make it clear, I did not come here to negotiate," Margherita Boniver said.
"I'm here to give the kidnappers everything they want!"
Esperon said the Government has sufficient troops on the ground even after the largest Muslim rebel group, Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), stopped helping soldiers search for the 57 year-old.

Kidnap-for-ransom is a thriving industry in some parts of the south, where Muslim and communist insurgents operate.
Generally, in a case of kidnap-for-ransom, the kidnap is accompanied by some sort of demand. So far...no demands.

7 bomb making experts arrested in Thai south
BANGKOK, Thailand - The Thai army on Wednesday identified seven Muslim men arrested early this week as top bomb-making specialists and key members of a militia group in Thailand's violence-wracked south, police said. Police and soldiers arrested the seven Sunday night when they raided the Islam Burapha school in Narathiwat province's Muang district, 800 kilometers (500 miles), south of Bangkok, army spokesman Col. Akara Thiprote said. The seven implicated five more suspected insurgents and police will seek warrants for their arrest, the government-run Thai News Agency reported.
Announce that they've ratted out twenty more and track who starts running.
Akara said some of the seven were top members of Runda Kumpulan Kecil, or RKK, a shadowy Islamicist organization believed by some terrorism experts to be an informal network of separatists who allegedly received training in Indonesia. But he could not confirm if any of them had been trained abroad.
Basic info on the RKK here.
Akara identified one of them as Manasae Ya, who is suspected of acquiring bomb-making material and explosive devices, as well as teaching new recruits how to assemble bombs.

Some of the suspects were students at a technical college nearby. Under emergency law, security forces can hold suspects without charge for up to 30 days.

Akara said the school is on the security watch list. "Since it's a school, it does not raise suspicion and makes it harder for us to crack down. It makes the authorities look bad if things go wrong. It's a perfect place for insurgents to hide," Akara said. Some teachers and the principal were taken in for questioning, police said. "In some cases schools give illicit approval for these operations to carry on under their roof," said Police Major General Yongyuth Jaroenwanij.
Perhaps you'll be suspicious of the schools in the future?
The seven men are suspected of involvement in some of the worst recent violence in the region, including a roadside bombing that killed 11 paramilitary troops on May 31, said Akara, adding that an "ustad," or teacher, who is a key member of the operation is still on the run.

The arrests were made after a bomb went off in a nearby rubber plantation where a suspected insurgent was wounded, Col. Athadej Mathanom said. Police and soldiers followed the blood trail into the school compound where they found bomb-making ingredients including gasoline and ammonium nitrate, and mobile phones commonly used to trigger bombs.
Even Legume could figure this one out.
The suspects were charged with illegal possession of explosive material and more charges, including terrorism-related ones, may follow after further investigation, Akara said.

Sri Lanka
Ex-air force officer among 6 arrested over Sri Lanka abductions
Sri Lankan police have arrested a former air force officer, a serving airman and four police officers for their alleged involvement in civilian abductions, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

The suspects were arrested last month after initial investigations suggested they were linked to several abduction and extortion cases, government security spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said. He did not elaborate, saying investigations were still pending. It was not immediately clear if the air force officer was in service when the alleged crimes were committed, where the civilians were abducted from, or how many people the men allegedly abducted.

No indication was given that the abductees were ethnic minorities on this island nation riven by a separatist conflict. The Civil Monitoring Committee, a group that campaigns against abductions, says at least 140 people, mostly minority ethnic Tamils, have been abducted from the capital, Colombo, in the past year, 18 of whom were subsequently found dead. Some of the abductees were released after relatives paid huge ransoms, while others never returned despite the payment of large sums, the committee says.

‘US should do more’: About 50 US lawmakers have written to President George W Bush asking him to step up American efforts to help resolve the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. “The United States has the opportunity to serve as a leader” in renewed international efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict, the lawmakers said in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.

Led by two Democrats in the House of Representatives, David Price and Rush Holt, the lawmakers told Bush it was “imperative” for him to step up US diplomatic engagement and high-level political contact in Sri Lanka in a bid to achieving peace. The US legislators also asked Bush to increase US efforts “to promote strong human rights protection for civilians” amid the conflict, and called on Colombo to take “active measures” to end “extrajudicial killings and disappearances” in government-controlled areas.

They cited a recent report by the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based think tank, which described the international response to Sri Lanka’s human rights problems as “disjointed, lackluster and tardy.” A commission set up by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse to investigate a wave of killings and disappearances said last week that 430 civilians, mostly minority Tamils, were slain over a bloody recent five month period.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
DEBKA: Syria Winds up Planning for Campaign of Terror on Golan
On June 26, Syria opened the Damascus-Golan road to Quneitra to civilian traffic for the first time since the Six-Day War of 1967. No announcement was made. The dozens of military roadblocks studding the 60 km high road connecting the capital with the Syrian part of Golan for 40 years were removed, except for two – one at the entrance to Qunetra from the Syrian end and one at the town’s exit to Israeli Golan. DEBKA-Net-Weekly’s military sources report that this measure went mostly unnoticed, although it made Israeli military intelligence sit up.

All of a sudden, the powers-that-be in the Syrian capital decided to allow civilians free passage to Golan meaning preparations are complete for the launch of a cross-border campaign of terror in the Israel sector of the territory.
Until this week, civilian traffic heading towards Syria’s Golan border with Israel was discouraged by the government in Damascus; a traveler needed eight different pieces of paper and endless waits to get past the military roadblocks. All of a sudden, the powers-that-be in the Syrian capital decided to allow civilians free passage to Golan meaning preparations are complete for the launch of a cross-border campaign of terror in the Israel sector of the territory. Such a campaign could quickly escalate into a full-scale war.

The day the road was opened, Syria celebrated the 33rd anniversary of Quneitra’s liberation, i.e. the signing of the armistice agreement with Israel which delineated the provisional border between the two countries and ended the 1973 Yom Kippur war and ensuing war of attrition. Quneitra, which was captured by Israel in 1967, was ceded to Syria on condition it was kept demilitarized.

The Syrian official publication Tishreen marked the event by writing:

Since the first moment of taking oath as President of the Republic, Bashar Al-Assad made it clear that the Golan always remains in the center until it returns to the homeland, Syria. This is an inevitable day. The return of Golan to Syria is non-negotiable.

Under such circumstances in which the Israelis continue to reject all Arab bids for reaching a just and comprehensive peace settlement, the option of national resistance remains the only open legitimate course for the liberation of the occupied Arab lands and the restoration of usurped rights.

Golan, the biblical Bashan, is a narrow basalt plateau, part of the Sea of Galilee’s catchment basin, which provides 30% of Israel’s water. Israeli jurisdiction was formally extended to Golan in 1981.

In speeches he made in the last three months, Bashar Assad made a point of referring to the mounting pressure of refugees from Golan living in Syria to take “liberation” in their own hands. Official Syrian figures put the number of “Golan Heights refugees” at 410,000, a figure which is grossly exaggerated to highlight their suffering. The real refugee figure from this tiny sliver of 1,070 sq. km. of land is no more than 60-70,000, around half of whom are crowded into the Wafadin camp on the western outskirts of Damascus.

In June 2006, Syrian military intelligence recruited several hundred Golan refugees for a new framework called the Front for the Liberation of the Golan Heights.

Three months ago, the Front struck for the first time, detonating an explosive device on the border fence as an Israeli patrol passed by.
DEBKA-Net-Weekly’s intelligence sources disclose that a year ago, in June 2006, Syrian military intelligence recruited several hundred Golan refugees for a new framework called the Front for the Liberation of the Golan Heights. They were trained for terror operations, blowing up roads and bridges, attacks on military camps and convoys and hostage-taking. Three months ago, the Front struck for the first time, detonating an explosive device on the border fence as an Israeli patrol passed by.

Israeli and Western military and intelligence interpret the opening of the Damascus-Quneitra highway to civilians as a gambit to give the Front free rein to cross into Israeli Golan for terrorist operations against civilian and military targets, without Syria being held responsible. This gives the Assad government an alibi for claiming it has no control over the traffic traversing the road to the border, the same pretext it has used for years in allowing terrorists, arms and money to infiltrate Iraq and Lebanon.

Israel can be expected to be a lot less tolerant of Syrian attacks on the Golan than the Americans are in Iraq - whatever the name of the “resistance” framework.

#1  Presumably Syria will be sending disguised military forces and a mass of irregular forces (Hezballah) amidst lots of innocent women and children for them to hide behind, so any Israeli counter-attack generates lots of collateral damage for the media.

#2  The first BIG attack by Hissybollah or Syrian agents should be acknowledged by nuking Damascus, where 90% of Israel's troubles with its neighbors originates. That would put a stop to most of the sh$$ Israel has to put up with. It would send shock waves throughout the MME as well. The attitude of the rest of the world should be "you mess with the bull, you get the horn."

Poirot to Damascus: There and back again
Chief U.N. investigator Serge Brammertz, who is probing the assassination of Lebanon 's former prime minister Rafik Hariri, traveled to Syria Wednesday morning, Lebanese media reported. It said Brammertz, along with a team of investigators, crossed the Masnaa border checkpoint at 9 a.m. He returned this afternoon to Lebanon.

Hariri was killed along with 22 others in a massive bombing on the Beirut seafront on Feb. 2005. Brammertz will be submitting his updated report to the UN security council on July 19. The anti-Syrian parliamentary majority accuses Syria of being behind the killing. But Damascus denies any involvement.

2 Australians charged with terrorism offenses in Lebanon
Two Australian men Ibhrahim Sabouh and Omar El Hadba who were arrested in anti-terrorism raids in Tripoli ,north Lebanon have been charged with terrorism offenses. The two other Australians who were arrested at the same time have been released without charge. Earlier today, the two men said their interrogators tortured them. Sabouh and Hadba have been accused of supplying weapons to terrorists.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Alexander Downer, says consular officials are still trying to gain access to the men before they face a military court in Lebanon. "I understand that the two Australians who have been detained have now been charged with terrorism offences," he said. "In particular with having weapons and, as I understand it, undermining the state of Lebanon and attempting to - participating in - the killing of civilians."

Mr Downer says the charges the men face are serious. "The charges ... will be heard in a military court," he said. "We don't have any time frame at this stage. We'll attempt to get access, we'll do what we can, but we can't give any guarantees at this stage."

He also says his department is still trying to get consular access to the men. "The Lebanese authorities are very sensitive about anybody who they think has been involved in terrorism and terrorist activities," he said. "It's obviously, for all of us, a big issue, but in a country like Lebanon its a very major issue. So bearing all that in mind it could take a long time before we get that sort of access."

Meanwhile, the two men who were released without charge have spoken about the claims of torture. Mohammed Basal says he was mistreated when first picked up by officials. "When they arrested me, I was amongst the Army and they were beating me around a bit," he said. "They had me up against the wall. They were kneeing me in the back and trying to make me talk and say something. I said, 'listen I don't know what you're talking about. I'm from Australia and wouldn't have a clue what you're talking about'."

Australian DFAT will push for an investigation for torture
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) says it will push for an investigation into allegations that four Australian men detained in Lebanon over suspected terrorism links were tortured.

The group was arrested during a raid on a unit in Tripoli two weeks ago for allegedly supplying weapons to terrorists. It was originally thought five Australians were being detained in Lebanon,
"Hey! Where's Ned?"
but local authorities have since said there were only four.
"Ned who?"
On Monday consular officials visited the third man, being held at a military court, but they are yet to gain access to the fourth man, who is being detained at the Ministry of Defense.

A spokeswoman for the department says two of the men said their interrogators tortured them. She says Australian officials raised the allegations with senior members of the Lebanese Government and military, who denied the claims.
"Tut tut."
"And tut."

Osama’s deputy in new video, urges unity in jihad
Al Qaeda's No 2 commander appeared on Wednesday in a new video on a portal used by Islamist militant groups, urging unity in jihad and calling for the overthrow of “corrupt” Muslim governments in the region. The English version of the title posted on the site was The Advice of One Concerned and the video showed the Egyptian cleric Ayman al-Zawahri, speaking in Arabic with English sub-titles. The US-based SITE Institute, which monitors Islamist sites, released a transcript that appeared to match the 95-minute video made by al Qaeda’s media arm as-Sahab.

In the video, Zawahri expounds at length on what he calls the corruption of the Saudi Arabian royal family, condemns Palestinian concessions to Israel and criticises the Egyptian government as an ally of the US. The video has been edited, incorporating clips from al Jazeera, US public television and other international news stations. At one point, it invokes evidence from US journalist Bob Woodward’s book on Iraq Plan of Attack. It is unclear when Zawahri was speaking, but the video said it was produced in the Muslim lunar month which corresponds to mid-June to mid-July.

Zawahri lashes out at those who did not accept the “Islamic State of Iraq,” and says it is crucial to the revival of an Islamic Caliphate. Though US commanders say tribal leaders are increasingly turning against the al-Qaeda, Zawahri said there is growing support from the Iraqi people. “Today, the wind—grace of Allah — is blowing against Washington,” he said. Zawahri also calls for unity in Iraq. “The mujahideen of Islam in Iraq of the Caliphate and jihad are advancing with steady steps toward victory....” he said.

45 Muzzie Docs planned US terror raids
From the Telegraph, UK.
A group of 45 Muslim doctors threatened to use car bombs and rocket grenades in terrorist attacks in the United States during discussions on an extremist internet chat site.
"Cry 'jihad' and let slip the golf carts of war!"
Police found details of the discussions on a site run by one of a three-strong "cyber-terrorist" gang. They were discovered at the home of Younis Tsouli, 23, Woolwich Crown Court in south-east London heard.
Check out his picture at the Telegraph article. He got some serious road rash or ran into a soccer hooligan.
One message read: "We are 45 doctors and we are determined to undertake jihad and take the battle inside America.

"The first target which will be penetrated by nine brothers is the naval base which gives shelter to the ship Kennedy." This is thought to have been a reference to the USS John F Kennedy, which is often at Mayport Naval Base in Jacksonville, Florida. The message discussed targets at the base, adding: "These are clubs for naked women which are opposite the First and Third units."
Of course you know, this means war.
It also referred to using six Chevrolet GT vehicles and three fishing boats and blowing up petrol tanks with rocket propelled grenades.
The plan needs some details worked out.
Investigators have found no link between the Tsouli chat room and the group of doctors and medics currently in custody over attempted car bomb attacks in London and Glasgow.
No, they are just JD's wanting to have a little fun. JD = Jihadi Doctors.
However, sources said it was "definitely spooky" that the use of doctors for terrorist purposes was being discussed in jihadi terrorist circles up to three years ago.
Makes sense. Sow fear when you go to the doc, especially if you are a Brit.
Part of the inquiry into the London and Glasgow incidents will focus on whether al-Qa'eda has recruited doctors or other medical professionals because they are less likely to attract suspicion and can move easily around the western world.

The three "cyber terrorists" - a British national and two who had been given the right to live in Britain - are facing lengthy jail sentences after admitting using the internet to spread al-Qa'eda propaganda inciting Muslims to a violent holy war and to murder non-believers.
How about life-long deportation back to the old country? The Muzzies will just get together in jail and form more cells, all kidding aside.
They had close links with al-Qa'eda in Iraq and believed they had to fight jihad against a global conspiracy by kuffars, or non-believers, to wipe out Islam.

The three are the first defendants in Britain to be convicted of inciting terrorist murder on the internet. They waged cyber-jihad on websites run from their bedrooms.

Tsouli promoted the ideology of Osama bin Laden via email and radical websites. He said in one message he was "very happy" about the July 7 bombings in London in 2005.

Tsouli, along with Tariq Daour, a biochemistry student, and Waseem Mughal, a law student, were intelligent, computer-literate men who promoted violent propaganda.

They created chat forums to direct willing fighters to Iraq and discuss murderous bomb attacks around the world. Films of hostages and beheadings were found by police.

Daour, 21, of Bayswater, west London, who was born in the United Arab Emirates, yesterday admitted inciting another person to commit an act of terrorism wholly or partly outside Britain. Moroccan-born Tsouli, 23, of Shepherd's Bush, west London, and British-born Mughal, 24, of Chatham, Kent, admitted the same charge on Monday.

They are due to be sentenced today. They also admitted conspiring together and with others to defraud banks, credit card companies and charge card companies. Daour had instructions for making explosives and poisons, the court was told. Police found instructions on causing an explosion with "rocket propellant'' and constructing a car bomb.
Wonder if their home countries want them back for anything. They could be tenderized interrogated for possible crimes committed there.
In one on-line conversation, Daour, asked what he would do with £1 million, replied: "Sponsor terrorist attacks, become the new Osama."

The three men outwardly appeared to be leading normal lives, studying and living with their parents. Tsouli had come to the UK with his family from Morocco in 2001.

Mughal had a degree in biochemistry from Leicester University and was studying for his masters.

Daour, who was granted British citizenship in May 2005, had applied to start a law degree.

I'd prefer that formal announcement of this revocation was branded into the flesh of their foreheads, but that's just me.

I doubt sincerely that any politicians here or in Britain will have the courage to stand up and loudly point out the monstrous lack of moral and ethical integrity involved with medical doctors plotting jihad. Islam needs its eyes blackened at every opportunity until it is suspected at all turns.

Not only would the perps be taken out, but a goodly portion of the rest of the muzzie community would take a severe hit. They also don't understand just how secure a naval base (or any military base, for that matter) is. They might get on, but they'd NEVER get off - at least, not in one piece.

The MME needs a good thumping, and the imposition of colonial rule for a few hundred years, so they can learn to live with "kuffurs" without getting ideas of superiority. I'd suggest conquering Soddy aRabida, Ya-men, Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Eritrea, and Somalia, with serious consequences (worse than death) to anyone opposing the colonial forces. After a few hundred years of having their ears handed to them in a plastic bag, they MAY learn how to live in a civilized society.
