-Lurid Crime Tales-
Man killed while beating would-be robber
Facing the barrel of a sawed-off shotgun on a dark West Baltimore street, Roland Scott fought back. He pulled out his own weapon - a fake handgun - and wrested the shotgun away from his attacker, city police said.

Scott ordered the man to strip näked in the middle of Laurens Street, took $800 from him and forced him to march into the laundry room of a nearby apartment building. "He starts beating him, telling him to get more money, saying, 'Get me a cell phone or I'm going to kill you,'" said Sgt. Dennis M. Raftery Jr., a supervisor in the Police Department's homicide unit. "He is beating him with the butt of a sawed-off shotgun."

Raftery said the shotgun, then pointed at Scott, discharged, hitting Scott in the stomach and killing him. Authorities said his death will be ruled accidental. "It is unusual," Raftery said yesterday. "I don't know how to put it. It is sort of like one for the books."
I think they call it "death by stoopid."
Still näked, the other man ran from the apartment building in the 400 block of Laurens St. - the incident occurred about 4 a.m. Wednesday - and went down Monroe Street. He cut his foot and was treated in the emergency room at St. Agnes Hospital. He told homicide detectives that he was trying to steal money to pay his rent and for phärmacy school, Raftery said, and that he ran when he heard the shotgun go off.

"You can't make this up. You just can't," Raftery said.
Raftery said detectives interviewed a witness who told police that he saw what happened in the laundry room and corroborated the man's account. "You can't make this up. You just can't," Raftery said. "There is no way that two different people who don't know each other ... there is no way he could come up with the collaborating information. I guess the moral of the story is if you get the jump on someone who is robbing you, call the police. Had he just held him there and called the police, then we would have done what we need to do."

Police said they are investigating to determine whether charges can be filed in the robbery of Scott.

#1  I say yes. The shotgun was loaded.

Sounds like doofus was holding the shotgun by the business end and beating the guy with it when it went off. That works best if they thing is unloaded.

#3  Facing the barrel of a sawed-off shotgun...whether charges can be filed.

Huh? In my neighborhood that's called armed robbery. It's against the law. Baltimore may be different. I've heard it has gone downhill.

#4  Possession of a sawed-off shotgun is a crime in itself. Most states in the USA require a barrel length of at least 18" AND an overall length of at least 24"

A 5,000 page impeachment petition! (2 signatures per page)
David Freddoso, "The Corner" @ National Review

I have received an e-mail forward indicating that the anti-war group Veterans for Peace will be submitting a 5,000-page impeachment petition to House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) as early as this Thursday. Sounds impressive, huh?

Well, maybe not. They will be submitting it with just two signatures on each page, for a total of 10,000. A bit less impressive — in fact, it sounds like they're planning to make war on American forests. (Maybe they'll at least use recycled paper.) . . .

Video of W throwing first pitch at Nationals vs. Braves game
Poor Dems. W snapped it right out there and didn't leave them much to judge him by.

I doubt McCain will do as well when his turn comes to throw out the first pitch, but he's older. :-|

(Hillary can't be Prez because she doesn't know which end of the baseball goes forward and she probably throws like a little girl. And BO probably thinks he can but really can't.)

#1  There was a whole lotta booing from the stands of the Prez as he took the mound.

Way to stay classy, Washington.

BTW I went to the new stadium for the last preseason game v. the Orioles on Saturday, and found the new stadium to be generally excellent. It doesn't have the innate beauty of Camden Yards, but the fan experience is very nice at Nationals Park.

Take a walk on the river side of the stadium for the best views.

I'm looking forward to many pleasant evenings watching my Nats in their new playground.

#3  Seafarious, I couldn't agree more. I give the overall fan experience at Opening Night a solid 9/10. I only dock one point because there were some delays getting through security but that's to be expected when the POTUS is on site. Otherwise, it would have been a 10. The new park is going to provide baseball fans in DC with many enjoyable years.

In anticipation of Bush's first pitch, and the boos that we expected to go with it, my girlfriend and I made a sign to show our support for the President. When he walked out, some people around us started yelling the usual nonsense, "Bush sucks! No more Bush! Screw Bush!"

That was when my girlfriend and I raised our signs high up in the air ('WE (heart) W!' with the "W" like it is on the player's caps) and proceeded to yell, "FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!"

It was a great game, too. The face of the franchise, 23 year-old Ryan Zimmerman, hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs to win the game. The crowd, a good portion of which had already headed for the exits as it was cold and getting late, exploded in cheers. It was perfect!

GO NATS!

Dunno how it was for you but Saturday the ballpark was very windy. Not sure if that makes it a hitters' park or not.

#6  DO these fans booing Dubya want their city [+ others in US] to be attacked like NYC, A SCENARIO WHICH LIKELY MAY PROVE WORSE IN MAGNITUDE THAN 9-11 GIVEN OBL's + RADICAL ISLAM'S PENCHANT RIGHT NOW TO DE FACTO HELP NUCLEARIZING IRAN DE FACTO GET "THE BOMB" [agz RUSSIA-CENASIA].

IMO the only reason for mainstream Amers to "boo" or rant agz Dubya is that AMERS STILL LIKE THEIR WARS TO BE SHORT, CONCLUSIVE/
DECISIVE, + VICTORIOUS - AMERS HAVE NO LOVE FOR PROTRACTIVE CONFLICTS REGARDLESS OF GEOPOL RISKS OR CONSEQUENCES.

As per the above, this is why Dubya's "long war" pragmatically cannot be, BOTH FOR THE USA + opponent RADICAL ISLAM. Its been 6-1/2 years since 9-11 event - MAINSTREAM AMER WILL NOT TOLERATE THOSE WHOM CONSPIRED FOR 9-11, INCLUDING COLLUSORY WORLD GOVTS, BEING ALLOWED TO ESCAPE. Amers desire to see the conspirators and reasons for 9-11 and Terror TRULY AND EFFECTIVELY AND WHOLLY DESTROYED, AMER NEVER TO BE THREATENED OR ATTACKED AGAIN, + AMER TROOPS TO COME HOME ASAP.

Its been 6-1/2 going on 7 years since 9-11. YEAR 2012 MAXIMA BENCHMARK > IMO, AMERS WILL DEMAND US TROOPS BE BROUGHT HOME REGARDLESS IFF GWOT = IRAN IS DEFEATED OR NOT. IMO, Amers = Amer Voters can prob hold on + [reluctantly?]suppor the USG + GWOT policies thru 2010, BUT I DOUBT beyond 2012. YEAR 2012 AND AFTER > INSURGENT VIOLENCE STILL IN IRAQ-ME??? > AMER VOTERS WILL WANT POLITICIAN HEADS ON A PLATTER.

As for "VICTORY-OR-MUTUAL DESTRUCTION" HAPPY ISLAMISTS, they are suffering such losses such that their REGIONAL-GLOBAL JIHAD AGENDA risks implosion and defeat/destruction by 2010 widout NUKE-WMDS OR PUTTING THEIR AGENDA INTO THE CONTROLLING HANDS OF "INFIDEL" WORLD NATIONS-GOVTS. They can, of course, continue their Jihad after 2010 BUT ON LIMITED-SCALE AND WID LITTLE OR NO HOPE OF ACHIEVING ISLAMIST OWG, NOR OF GETTING THE US-WEST OUT OF THE ME + MUSLIM WORLD REGIONS.

Radical Islam needs the ISLAMIST NUCLEAR + POPULATION + ECON, etc BOMB(S) NOW, THEY NEED IRAN TO GET THE BOMB NOW = ASAP, + THEY NEED RUSSIA + MUSLIM CENASIA SUBORNED NOW, ESPEC TO CONTROL THE LATTER's NUCTECHS + NUC ARSENALS/
CACHES IN CASE OF US-IRAN WAR.

IMO, WHITNEY HUSTON Fan OSAMA BIN LADEN's recent messages agz VATICAN-EURO should be interpreted as a STRATEGIC/SUBSTAN ESCALATION vv ISLAMIST DRIVE TOWARDS THE NUCLEARIZATION OF MILITANT ISLAMISM-TERROR = NUCLEARIZED/WMD-IZED GLOBAL JIHAD.

IOW, MSGS > OSAMA, etc. HAS UPPED THE ANTE + WAR FOR CONTROL OF THE WORLD - ISLAM = ISLAMISM WILL APOCALYPTICALLY WIN ITS OWG OR BE DITTO UTTERLY DESTROYED VIA THE MUSHROOM CLOUDS.

SUB-IOW, OSAMA, etc. INTENDS TO MAKE IRAQ-AFGHANISTAN INEVITABLY IRRELEVANT TO A GREATER, MORE DANGEROUS CONFLICT, A SIDE SHOW. OSAMA + RADIC ISLAMISM CAN'T WAIT FOR YEAR 2018 + RUSS-CHINA's ANTI-US "WAR IS NOT ONLY POSSIBLE BUT DESIRED" OPTION.

#7  I was there and it was quite chilly. It felt more like late October than it did late March. That and the carnival atmosphere (there were 2 or 3 live bands spread throughout the public, open areas within the ballpark playing music up until the first pitch) they fostered for the unveiling of the new stadium almost fooled me into thinking I was at a playoff game. But it will be at least a couple of years before that's even remotely possible.

As for the wind, it just depends on which direction it is blowing. But if the two HRs hit last night are any indication, then this park is much more hitter friendly than RFK (which was anything but).

Thanks for the support. It's not that my girlfriend and I are card carrying members of the GWB fan club (let's just say that before she met me, she didn't have many nice things to say about the man), although I do admit a certain unexplicable affinity for this President that for whatever reason I never felt with Clinton (I just think he seems like a genuinely good guy who, for one thing, wouldn't cheat on his wife with a WH intern), I don't like how he is treated so unfairly by the media and liberals in general. Not that the Republicans pulled many punches when it came to Clinton's "mistakes" but the vitriol and venom that has been piled on the current POTUS is just ridiculous and completely unwarranted.

When it comes to deference, I don't care if a Democrat or Republican is POTUS. I believe the history, respect, and gravitas of the office itself means that whoever takes the oath will do what they believe in their heart of hearts is best for this country. Mistakes will be made and I may not agree with them but I will pay them deference until they give me a material reason not to.

Austin Pork Plant Worker Describes Sucking in Pig Brain Illness
More than a dozen workers at the Quality Pork Processing plant in Austin came down with an unexplained illness.

"A year ago I would have been walking with a walker," said Susan Kruse. Kruse still walks with a limp today, nearly two years after she began experiencing strange symptoms in November of 2006.

"It started in my left leg then it went to my right leg. I had tingling in my finger tips and my body wanted to go but my body wouldn't let me," Kruse explained. After a series of medical tests, doctors were stumped by her condition. "They eventually did a nerve biopsy, EMG, and an MRI," she said.

The pain became so debilitating, Kruse had to quit her job at the pork slaughterhouse where she had worked for 15 years.

The mystery behind the illness began to unravel when more than a dozen other workers at Quality Pork Processing came down with similar symptoms.
There was great confusion at first because of the huge number if illegals working at the plant. The CDC was looking into a southern border sickness or two. Ten years ago, something happened in Austin. The meat packing plants began transporting illegal aliens from Texas to work in the plants around Austin
After studying other patients, health officials determined the illness was progressive inflammatory neuropathy. Doctors said the strange sickness was caused from inhaling the fine mist of pig brains.
Feel free to make your own "brains on the job" jokes

Arabia
Camels line up for Gulf beauty contest
ABU DHABI - More than 10,000 camels from across the Gulf will be competing for millions of dollars in prize money at a beauty pageant for the “ship of the desert” in Abu Dhabi next week. The contest is part of a camel festival being staged from Wednesday in the capital of the United Arab Emirates which aims to celebrate and preserve the region’s cultural heritage.
Tells you a lot right there ...
Camels from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia will strut their stuff before a panel of expert judges who will decide which owners should be awarded prize money totalling around 9.5 million dollars. One hundred cars are also up for grabs.

“Preserving the rich heritage of the UAE and passing it on to future generations constitutes one of the most important missions which people of the UAE wish to undertake, by connecting our culturally rich past with our aspired bright and prosperous future,” the official WAM news agency quoted festival organiser Mohammed al-Mazrouei as saying earlier this week.

#3  The problem is calling them beauty contests.

In the AKC and equivalent other kennel clubs, there are standards of excellence for each breed of dog. These include factors like size, angulation etc. appropriate for the breed's working purpose as well as aesthetic factors.

If you really want to keep your youth connected to tradition, help them to see what a good working camel looks like - and how the structure of a racing camel differs from that of an ideal pack animal for long distance caravans. Even better, include performance competitions as well as show judging.

Britain
Get off my bus, I need to pray
A MUSLIM bus driver told stunned passengers to get off so he could PRAY.

The white Islamic convert rolled out his prayer mat in the aisle and knelt on the floor facing Mecca. Passengers watched in amazement as he held out his palms towards the sky, bowed his head and began to chant. One, who filmed the man on his mobile phone, said: “He was clearly praying and chanting in Arabic. “We thought it was a wind-up at first, like Jeremy Beadle.” The 21-year-old plumber added: “He looked English and had a London accent. He looked like a Muslim convert, with a big, bushy beard. “Eventually everyone started complaining. One woman said, ‘What the hell are you doing? I’m going to be late for work’.” After a few minutes the driver calmly got up, opened the doors and asked everyone back on board.

But they saw a rucksack lying on the floor of the red single-decker and feared he might be a fanatic. So they all refused. The passenger added: “One chap said, ‘I’m not getting on there now’. “An elderly couple also looked really confused and worried. “After seeing that no-one wanted to get on he drove off and we all waited until the next bus came about 20 minutes later. I was left totally stunned. It made me not want to get on a bus again.” The bizarre event unfolded on the number 81 in Langley, Berkshire, at around 1.30pm on Thursday. The passenger said he rang the bus firm to complain but claimed it did not believe him. He said: “They asked me, ‘Are you sure?’. Then they said they would get back to me, but they weren’t taking me seriously at all.”

Yesterday the driver, who said his name was Hrun, told The Sun: “I asked everyone to get off because I needed to pray. I was running late and had not had time. “I pray five times a day as a Muslim — but I don’t normally ask people to get off the bus to do it.”

How very generous of him, don't you think? Normally, that is.

#3  If he tried that in Pakistan, the irate commuters would beat him, make him drive them to their destination, then beat him again.

There, fixed that.

#7  ...When I was stationed in KSA, I lived at Eskan Village - roughly equivalent to a mid-range condo development here in the states. It was patrolled by Saudi Army troops who came in every day from a nearby base, and rode around in armored cars that patrolled the base perimeter. As I would run the perimeter every day, it would occasionally happen that their prayer time coincided with my running. When that happened, they'd get out of the van and perform their prayers at the roadside - and I would stop a respectful distance away while they took care of things, then continued my run. After a few weeks of this, one of them actually motioned me over and in quite good english asked me why I stopped. My answer was that I would no more consider running through or past their prayers than they would consider running through my church during ours. That seemed quite reasonable to them, and for the rest of the time I was there, if they saw me running they would always stop and say hello for a few, and on a couple of occasions I had an armored car escort as I ran.
My point here is that I have wondered ever since how those men - raised in a strict Wahabbi society - could have been so polite, and how men like the one in the story could be so utterly asinine.

Europe
'Flash mob' floods Berlin McDonald's with 10,300 burger orders
More than 700 people 'flashmobbed' a Berlin train station McDonald's over the weekend, ordering more than 10,300 burgers as part of a spontaneous public gathering. "The whole action was very surprising and challenging for us," said McDonald's corporate spokesperson Michael Schramm on Sunday.

Workers at the Ostbahnhof station McDonald's told reporters on Saturday that the action was "a very normal order, only bigger."

"Sturm Crew Berlin," the group that organized the "flash mob" action, arranges for large groups of people to spontaneously assemble in public and stage a simultaneous action - like applauding, telephoning, or mass burger orders. They assembled at Berlin's Alexanderplatz station and travelled together to the Ostbahnhof station, just a few stops away. The group said on Saturday that they'd beat the previous record of 4,500 burger orders in Munich.

The McDonald's staff took several hours to finish the massive order of hamburgers, cheeseburgers and chicken burgers. A German Federal Police spokesperson said the the action was peaceful, and the participants, who were mostly young men, didn't fully disperse until late evening. McDonald's spokesperson Schramm said the action earned the franchise more than €10,700.

India-Pakistan
Curry bomb! Indian army chiefs reveal latest weapon in war on terror
Indian army chiefs are set to deploy a "curry bomb" to win the war on terror. India's weapons development experts have developed an eye-watering spice bomb, packed with a potent mix of red chilli and pepper which will be used to smoke out militants during counter-insurgency operations.

As Britain's legion of Friday night Vindaloo casualties will testify, too much chilli can be debilitating.

But scientists from India's Defence Research and Development Organisation have discovered that the spices which make your curry so hot can also bring an enemy to his knees in seconds.

They have created an 81-mm grenade packed with red hot chilli, pepper and phosphorus to use in Kashmir where Islamic separatists linked with al Qaeda are fighting a long-running insurgency war. Their enemy is often unseen, and can easily disappear in civilian crowds. India's curry bomb however will help its soldiers to immobilise enemy fighters, and allow them to be captured, without long-term injury.

The mix of spices and phosphorous chokes the enemy's respiratory tract, leaving targets barely able to breathe for a time. Their eyes, throat and skin burn and sting.

Army scientists have also discovered the "curry bomb" can be used to block enemy attacks by creating a smoke screen and preventing snipers from using night-vision devices and thermal imagers. From being fired by a grenade launcher, it creates an effective smoke screen ninety metres away within five seconds.

The curry bomb will be used both as a hand grenade by police and armed forces, and as a tank-mounted device.

Experts from India's Defence Research and Development Organisation have already tested their new "grenade masala" in a series of 'spice raids' close to the Line of Control which separates Indian and Pakistani forces in the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region. "The field trials have been completed with success in several areas along the Line of Control. The grenades would be successful in forcing out militants from their hideouts."

#2  How that is different from OC? Except that curry is more suited to local cooking, of course.

#3  No different than our pepper spray.

Brilliant idea to make it into a gas though.

#4  Like the cloud idea. Kind of shielding pepper gas.

We have a friend that threw in liquid hot sauce into the pan he was using to shallow fry his dinner. He and his wife, well let's just say they had to leave the house for a bit.

#5  When I'm cutting a Bhut Jolokia (from India) I have to be careful to not inhale the fumes. I also have to be careful to not let the pot boil over. Those things are 2 to 3 times hotter than a Habenero. You could trigger respiratory arrest with those things.

#6  Deacon Blues: I have a regular hazmat process for making habanero picante.

First of all, you work outside. Wearing a plastic smock, butyl rubber gloves, a breathing device and clear goggles, I run the stemmed peppers through a meat grinder along with a white onion. Then pour the boiling vinegar and salt mix over them in the jar. Rinse all equipment in a bucket of warm, soapy water before putting in the dishwasher.

After two weeks of steeping, then I run the mix through a blender, again outside, and add a cup of grain alcohol.

All told, it is no more difficult than working with persistent nerve agent. Of course, if I was making a picante out of Bhut Jolokia, it would be no more difficult that working with highly radioactive persistent nerve agent.
