Afghan Taliban torch US vehicles at Pakistan border
[Pak Daily Times] Taliban fighters wearing army uniforms attacked US military vehicles in a parking lot in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing at least one policeman and torching several trucks, an official said.

The attackers detonated a boom-mobile outside the entrance to the facility at Torkham gate, a key crossing into Pakistain for NATO

provincial front man Ahmad Zia Abdulzai told AFP. "All attackers, who had military uniforms on, were killed."

The parking lot was run by a private company and used by the US military for vehicles waiting to exit Afghanistan, he said. NATO shipments through Torkham are currently suspended after Pak activists opposed to US drone raids forcibly searched trucks and threatened drivers. A Taliban statement said their fighters had torched more than 30 US military vehicles on Wednesday. Militants on both sides of the Afghan border frequently target NATO supply lines, forcing NATO to shift towards alternative routes via Central Asian countries.

Somalia gunmen kill three Syrians, three local doctors
[Egypt Independent] Fighters in Somalia rubbed out three Syrian doctors and their three Somali colleagues Wednesday as they travelled to a hospital outside the capital Mogadishu, an AFP news hound said.

Their bullet-riddled bodies were carried into Mogadishu's Medina hospital after the attack on a road leading from the capital to Afgoye, a town some 30 kilometres (20 miles) northwest of the capital.

Doctors at the hospital said the foreigners killed were Syrians.

U.S. Blacklists Algerian Qaida Breakaway Faction
[An Nahar] The United States on Wednesday blacklisted a shadowy al-Qaeda breakaway faction behind the bloody siege of an Algerian gas plant.

The Signatories in Blood, an armed unit founded by the one-eyed Mokhtar Belmokhtar last year when he split from Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, was designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department.

The group, also known as the al-Mulathamun Battalion, "grabbed credit for the January 2013 attack against a gas facility near In Amenas, Algeria," the department said in a statement, adding that three Americans were among the 38 civilians killed in the siege.

The designation bar U.S. citizens and companies from having any dealings with the Algerian group.

Severed head found in Benghazi
[Libya Herald] A severed head, said to be that of the father of a senior Saiqa Brigade officer, was found in Benghazi yesterday. Haji Attiya Al-Naaili, aged 65, the father of Salem Al-Naaili, was kidnapped some weeks ago.
"Mahmoud! Look! It's a severed head!"
The gruesome discovery was made near the son's house in the city's Salem district.
"Whoa! Major gruesome!"
The whereabouts of the rest of the body is unknown.
"He looks kinda like you. That's not your head, is it?"
According to a Saiqa source, the head was taken to Jalaa Hospital
"Name?"
"Haji Attiya Al-Naaili."
"Complaint?"
"Beheaded."

but then had to be transferred to Benghazi Medical Centre because of maintenance work at the mortuary.
"This is the emergency room! He's dead! Take him to the mortuary!"
"They're doing maintenance on the mortuary!"
"Okay. Take him to examining room 5!"

It is reported that some days ago the kidnappers phoned Salem, better known as Salem Afaret, offering to release his father if he would hand himself over to them. He is alleged to have responded that he did not believe them and that if he did so, they would probably kill the both of them.
"You ain't foolin' me, you know1"
It is claimed the action was in response to a threat supposedly made by Salem in a video in which reportedly said that if anyone did any harm to Benghazi he would personally behead them.
That worked well, didn't it?

Badie imprisoned 15 days pending investigation into October police dept. events
[Egypt Independent] Moslem Brüderbund Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie has been imprisoned for an additional 15 days pending investigations on charges of involvement in inciting the burning of 6th of October City's police department.

The burning took place after the violent dispersal of the pro-Mohammed Morsy sit-in on 14 August. It left at least two people dead and three coppers injured.

Badie faces charges of murder and attempted murder, heading a terrorist gang aiming to disturb security and public peace, preventing state institutions and public authorities from exercising their work, attacking police facilities and trying to occupy them, inciting armed elements to kill citizens, providing ammunition and firearms and resisting authorities.

The investigations of the National Security Agency said that on 11 August, many radical Islamists held a secret meeting in one of the halls attached to Rabea al-Adaweya mosque, in which they agreed on the attacks that would be carried out if the Interior Ministry dispersed the sit-ins .

Badie denied all charges against him and described the National Security investigations as "fabricated." He demanded an investigation into the killing of his son Ammar in the Ramsis Street events and the burning of his house by unknown assailants in Beni Suef.

Bangladesh
Bangladesh sentences eight students to death for murder
[Pak Daily Times] A Bangladesh court on Wednesday sentenced eight students from the ruling party to death for the brutal murder of a young Hindu that was captured live on television in the capital.

The special fast-track court found the Awami League (AL) activists guilty of chasing down Biswajit Das, 24, and hacking him with machetes while police stood by, in a crime that shocked the nation after its airing on TV.

A further 13 activists from the AL's student wing were sentenced to life in prison for murdering Das, whom prosecutors said they mistook for a supporter of opposition strikes that took place last December.

Prosecutor S.M Rafiqul Islam confirmed eight students were handed a death sentence while "13 were given life in prison."

Only eight of the accused were present in the packed court to hear judge A.B.M Nizamul Huq read out the verdict. The rest, including two of those handed the death penalty, are still on the run and were tried in absentia.

The victim's elder brother Uttam Das said the family was happy with the verdict and called for the executions to be swiftly carried out.

"We have got the justice and now we want quick execution of these criminals," Das said.

The trial was a major test for the secular AL amid allegations at the time that police, who are closely linked with the AL government, tried to cover up the identities of the activists.

The sentences are likely to boost the AL's popularity among the minority Hindu community ahead of January 5 general elections. Hindus make up around 10 percent of Bangladesh's 153 million people and traditionally form a key AL support base.

The AL students chased down Das after a small bomb went kaboom! outside a state-run university, where they attended, during the strikes which they opposed.

The mob suspected Das of planting the bomb, mistaking him for a protester from the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the trial heard.

Defence lawyer Mizanur Rahman Molla said he would appeal the conviction in a higher court.

The verdicts came as the impoverished country reels from political turmoil ahead of the polls, with the main opposition and its allies boycotting the vote and holding deadly strikes and street protests.

As local shopkeeper Rentu came forward to save him, the Shibir men brandished a pistol and bravely ran away, said Duke's uncle Jahangir Alam.

Locals rescued Duke and whisked him off to the RMCH where he underwent two hours of surgery.

Tendons of both his legs and left hand were chopped at three or four places, and Duke also was stabbed in his back, said Prof BK Dam, head of the RMCH orthopaedic surgery department.

Duke needs immediate vascular surgery as his veins were damaged at many places and so he was referred to Dhaka, he added.

Yemeni 9/11 Suspect again Ejected from Guantanamo Court
[An Nahar] One of the alleged 9/11 conspirators was removed from court at Guantanamo Bay for the fourth time in two days after calling the prison's commander "a war criminal" Wednesday.

Yemeni suspect Ramzi Binalshibh was initially escorted out of a pre-trial hearing at the U.S. naval base in Cuba seconds after an impromptu speech in which he said the authorities had done nothing to stop sounds that he has heard in his cell.

"I have to leave. I asked you to stop these vibrations. I don't want to stay here as long as there is torture there," Binalshibh, who had already been ejected twice from the court on Tuesday, told military Judge James Pohl.

The latest hearing for Binalshibh and four other men accused of planning the September 11 attacks on Washington and New York in 2001 is being screened for news hounds at the Fort Meade military base in Maryland, via closed-circuit feed.

"If there is no power to stop this you should resign," Binalshibh said, referring to loud banging noises that he contends are preventing him from sleeping at night.

His defense team on Tuesday suggested that prison guards may be responsible for the noises, an allegation the judge said had neither been proven nor unproven.

Judge Pohl warned Binalshibh that his actions were disrupting Wednesday's proceedings and that he would be removed if he did not stop talking, but he continued.

"This is my life, this is torture. You have to stop this," Binalshibh said as he was removed from the court at the start of the morning session.

He returned to the hearing following the lunch break but spoke out again several minutes later while Colonel John Bogdan, commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo Detention, was giving evidence.

"Sorry, I have to leave. The guy next to you is a war criminal," Binalshibh told Judge Pohl, referring to Bogdan in the dock.

Binalshibh, whose lawyers insist he is mentally fit, was escorted out of court by two guards and taken to the courtroom's holding cell. A request that he be allowed to return to Camp Seven, where he is normally held, was refused by the judge.

Binalshibh's alleged crimes include helping the hijackers find flight schools in the United States and of financing the airliner plot. He and his fellow accused are eventually expected to go on trial in 2015.

Harvard student charged with bomb threat hoax
[Pak Daily Times] A Harvard University
...home of the Best and the Brightest, contributed $878,164 to the 2008 Obama campaign. Is there a reason universities are among the top financiers of political campaigns?
student was charged with making a false claim that bombs had been placed at up to four buildings on the school's campus in a bid to get out of taking a final exam, US prosecutors said on Tuesday.

The prestigious Ivy League school a day earlier had evacuated four buildings from its centuries-old campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, after receiving emails that US prosecutors said on Tuesday had been sent by the 20-year-old student, Eldo Kim.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation tracked Kim down at his dorm where, after being read his Miranda rights, the student "stated that he authored the bomb threat emails ... he was motivated by a desire to avoid a final exam," according to prosecutors.

Kim is due in federal court in Boston on Wednesday to face one charge of making a hoax bomb report. If convicted he faces up to five years in prison, three years supervised release and a $250,000 fine. The emails sent to the Harvard University Police Department, two university officials and the Harvard Crimson student newspaper said that "shrapnel bombs" had been placed in two of four named halls, which included classroom buildings and a dorm.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
U.S. Blacklists Usamah al-Shihabi as Global Terrorist
[An Nahar] The United States on Wednesday blacklisted Fatah al-Islam
A Syrian-incubated al-Qaeda work-alike that they think can be turned off if no longer needed to keep the Lebanon pot stirred.
top member Osamah al-Shihabi as a "global terrorist."

"The Department of State has designated Fatah al-Islam (FAI) associate Osamah Amin al-Shihabi as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under section 1(b) of Executive Order (E.O.) 13224, which targets faceless myrmidons and those providing support to faceless myrmidons or acts of terrorism," it said in a statement.

"Al-Shihabi is an associate of FAI, a Lebanese-based hard boy group formed in 2006, whose ultimate goal is the institution of Islamist sharia law in the Paleostinian refugee camps and the destruction of Israel, and at times has played a key leadership role in the organization," the State Department added.

Shihabi is wanted by Lebanese authorities on multiple arrest warrants. He has been described as the "emir of Fatah al-Islam" in the Ein el-Hellhole Paleostinian refugee camp.

According to media reports, the hard boy shuttles between Ein el-Hellhole and Syria.

In Its statement, the State Department said "he has also recently been appointed head of Syria-based al-Nusra Front's Paleostinian wing in Leb."

Al-Nusra Front was formed by al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) in late 2011 as a proxy for AQI's activities in Syria. On December 11, 2012, the State Department blacklisted al-Nusra as a foreign terrorist organization.

The consequences of Wednesday's designation include a prohibition against U.S. persons engaging in transactions with al-Shihabi, and "the freezing of all property and interests in property of al-Shihabi that are in the United States, or come within the United States or the possession or control of U.S. persons."

In August 2011, Shihabi was appointed as the "emir" of Fatah al-Islam in Leb, succeeding Abdul Rahman Awad, who was killed in an army ambush in the Bekaa in 2010.

The Nahr al-Bared Paleostinian refugee camp in northern Leb was almost totally destroyed during a months-long conflict between the Lebanese army and the al-Qaeda-inspired Fatah al-Islam in 2007.

The fighting killed some 400 people, including 168 soldiers. Some Islamist leaders escaped despite the army siege of the camp.

Syria Barrel Bomb Raids on Aleppo Kill 135
[An Nahar] Regime warplanes pounded Syria's second city Aleppo for a fourth straight day Wednesday in air raids that have killed at least 135 people, many of them children, a monitor said.

The attacks focused on rebel-held areas of eastern and northern Aleppo, once the country's commercial hub, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Sunday's first day of the raids produced the highest daily toll with 76 dead in six neighborhoods, among them 28 children, the Britannia-based watchdog said.

Monday saw 20 dead including four children, and eight children were among 39 killed on Tuesday, said the Observatory which relies on a network of sources on the ground for its information.

It did not say whether or not any of those killed included rebels battling the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor. If he'd stuck with it he'd have had a good practice by now...
.

Many of the fatalities were caused by so-called "barrel bombs" packed with explosives and dropped from both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

An estimated 126,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war, which erupted after a brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests first held in March 2011.

Doctors without Borders (MSF) reported more than 100 people killed by barrel bombs from helicopters, and already stretched hospitals overflowing with maimed.

Activists and the Observatory accuse Assad's forces of using barrels stuffed with concrete and TNT to cause the maximum number of casualties and damage.

A Syrian security source has denied that barrel bombs are used against what the regime calls "terrorists".

But another has said the military prefers such weapons instead of missiles because they are cheaper.

Most of the areas being targeted are in the east of the city and near regime-controlled parts of Aleppo province, one of the front lines in the conflict.

The opposition National Coalition has said the "systematic raids on Aleppo demonstrate the regime's rejection of a political solution".

Three Iranian guards killed in roadside bombing
[Pak Daily Times] Three Iranian military personnel were killed in south-east Iran early on Wednesday when the vehicle they were travelling in was struck by a roadside kaboom, Iranian media said.

The reported killings - near to where the borders of Iran, Pakistain and Afghanistan meet - come at a time of heightened tension in the region as separatist Sunni Islamist bully boyz step up attacks on officially Shi'ite Iran.

Heavily-armed drug smugglers are also active in the region.

The three men were part of an engineering division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) working on construction projects near the city of Saravan, Tasnim news agency quoted an unnamed provincial official as saying.
