Afghanistan
Afghan poll body sacks 3,000 over fraud ahead of run-off
[The Peninsula] Afghanistan's election commission has said it had fired more than 3,000 staff accused of fraud in the first round of the presidential election, as it sought to quell fears that it might fail to deliver a legitimate outcome.

Afghans voted on April 5 in the first round to pick a successor to President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
, barred by the constitution from standing for a third term after more than a decade in power.

The winner will take charge at a crucial time, with most foreign troops due to withdraw by the end of the year, the Taliban insurgency still raging and a pact with Washington permitting some US forces to stay hanging in the balance.

Spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor said Independent Election Commission had blacklisted the fired staff, so that they would not be hired in the second round.

"Some fraud was reported from those polling stations," he added, referring to the sites where the fired staff had worked.

Independent election monitors say many complaints were ignored in the effort to meet deadlines and the decisionmaking process lacked transparency.

Egypt Jails 19 Morsi Supporters for Five Years
[An Nahar] An Egyptian court enjugged
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
19 supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
for five years on Saturday for storming the offices of the head of the prestigious Al-Azhar Islamic institution, judicial sources said.

The army-installed government has rounded up thousands of Morsi's supporters and tried them in mass hearings since his ouster in July last year.

The defendants were accused of damaging public property, assaulting civil servants and blocking roads for storming the offices of the head of the Al-Azhar institution in Cairo in November, the sources said.

Each defendant was also fined 20,000 Egyptian pounds ($ 2,850 or 2,200 euros).

A minor accused in the case was sentenced to three years in juvenile detention, while one Turkish national was acquitted of the charges, they added.

Following the ouster of Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected civilian president, his supporters have staged protests that have often degenerated into violent street festivities with security forces and civilian opponents.

Trash mountains pile up in Benghazi
[Libya Herald] Killings and fighting between the forces of retired general Khalifa Hafter and Ansar A-Sharia and 17 February Brigade are not the only issues people in Benghazi have to worry about. There is an environmental disaster beckoning.

Huge piles of rubbish continue to grow in Benghazi following a garbage collectors' strike. The sheer volume of refuse now poses a health risk as the temperature increases in the already beleaguered eastern city.

Chairman of the Board of Directors for Public Services in Benghazi Salem Shoui told the Libya Herald that rubbish collectors began striking in May over delayed pay, better facilities at headquarters and the provision of health insurance. He said many of the public services company's 5,400 employees had not received their salaries for at least three months.

Others at the cleaning subsidiary have received no money for half a year, he added.

Shoui said the workers had experienced a great deal of suffering over the delays and needed to provide for their families. He said government officials in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
had, in a number of meetings, promised to free up the necessary funds for the payment of salaries but these had been empty words.

Shoui said their actions had been "criminal "and added that now he did not know where to turn.

The massive piles of rubbish are starting to have an effect far beyond just their noxious stench. The garbage is attracting animals and mosquitoes. It is causing traffic jams where it blocking the roads. More than this, as a breeding ground for illnesses, the elderly and the young are put particularly at risk by the trash.

Residents have taken to burning the rubbish in their efforts to reduce it. However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
they are unaware of the health implications even this may have as they breath in the fumes.

Sultan cautions FG on foreign troops occupying Nigeria
[Nigerian Tribune] The Sultan of Sokoto and President of the Nigerias Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, on Saturday in Abuja, warned the Federal Government not to allow foreign troops coming to assist the country combat the wave of terrorism, to occupy Nigeria's territory in the name of offering help.

He stated that assistance from international community should be restricted to support in terms of equipment, logistics and training.

The Sultan, who spoke amidst the call for foreign assistance in the fight against Boko Haram

insurgency at the Mohammedan Students' Society of Nigeria diamond jubilee celebration, cautioned against the use of force in efforts to rescue the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls.

Emphasising confidence in the ability of the military to contain the insurgency, the Sultan noted that there is no where use of force has brought peace.

He warned that if attempts are made to use force to rescue the girls, the students could be killed and according to him, "then we are back to square one."

Abubakar called for support for the military, saying, "We must help them to achieve the burden of protecting our country and fight terrorism.

"We must unite to fight krazed killers. Terrorism is not part of Islam. Some hide under Islam to commit crimes. They are snuffies and not Islamic turbans, therefore we can fight terrorism," he said.

Speaking on the foreign assistance, he said, "they offered to help us, but don't bring your troop to occupy our territory. We cannot get them out once we allow them to occupy our territory."

Boko Haram's friends, sympathisers are here with us --T.Y. Danjuma
[Nigerian Tribune] GENERAL Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd), on Saturday, stunned the gathering those gathered at the 40th coronation anniversary of the Emir of Lafia, Alhaji Isa Mustafa Agwai 1, when he declared that Boko Haram

's friends and sympathisers were at the ceremony.

Danjuma, who made the declaration in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, shortly after he was honoured alongside his wife with traditional titles by the Emir, said if urgent actions were not taken to halt the activities of Boko Haram, such gatherings might not hold henceforth, particularly in the North East.

He lamented that the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls at Chibok in Borno State and their forceful conversion to Islam were wrong.

According to him, "I want to appeal to Boko Haram wherever they are and their sympathizers. Some of them are here. Please release our girls. Let them go back to school. Nobody, absolutely nobody, has the mandate to scatter Nigeria. Let us bring sanity into our political life. This is a worrisome.

According to them, "We urge you to immediately release the young children you have unconscionably taken. Your actions have shocked Moslems across the world and have disrespected Islam and the teachings of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).

"Your justification for stealing these children -- that education for girls goes against Islam -- has no basis whatsoever in our faith. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) wisely emphasised that every Moslem man and woman has a duty to seek education. You have truly strayed from Islam when your actions betray its first command: "Iqra!"

They insisted that by such act, the Boko Haram sect had strayed from the teachings of Islam, arguing "Your attempt to transform a central tenet of Islam into a vile lie used to kill and maim innocent Nigerians of all faiths is transparent. You treat children like cattle."

They called on Shekau to "listen to the global chorus of voices that are enjoining you to do what is right: return these children to their families and replace the evil in your heart with peace and learning."

Someone once told me that Islam was the devil's answer to Christianity. I don't think that the US Islamic clerics would agree.

In fact kudos for writing the letter. My beef with American Muslims has been their muted voice in condemning the death eaters acting in their name. This letter was a good move.

In an exclusive interview with Press TV on Saturday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran had held talks with Nigerian officials in recent days and condemned the abduction of 276 schoolgirls by the Boko Haram Takfiris in the African country.

"Given our experience in combating terrorism in our country, we are ready to supply the Nigerian officials with necessary consultation in this regard," Amir-Abdollahian stated.
The Iranian official added that the Nigerian government had already taken "serious measures" to free the kidnapped girls, expressing hope for an end to such "acts of extremism" in West Africa and the entire continent.

On April 14, the krazed killer group kidnapped 276 students from their secondary school in the northeastern town of Chibok in the Borno state and threatened later to "sell" the girls.

Europe
France: Toulouse Gunman's Sister May Be Fighting In Syria
[IsraelTimes] Souad Merah and her 4 children left La Belle France, authorities say; she is said to have blessed her brother before his March 2012 shooting

The sister of Al-Qaeda inspired gunman Mohammed Merah who killed seven people in and around Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
two years ago, has left La Belle France and could be fighting in Syria, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Friday.

French authorities lost track of 35-year-old Souad Merah in March when a school at which one of her children was studying alerted them that the pupil had failed to turn up for several days.

"There is a strong suspicion that she is in Syria," Cazeneuve told Europe1 radio.

Souad Merah, who has four children aged between nine months and 14 years, left Toulouse at the start of May for Barcelona in Spain, according to French sources investigating the case.

She was accompanied by her children.

Cazeneuve said she took a flight for Istanbul from Barcelona on May 9 and took another plane the same day for the Turkish city of Gaziantep, which is near the Syrian border.

Souad Merah had been taken into custody in April on suspicion that she blessed her brother Mohammed, 23, ahead of the killing spree in which he rubbed out three French soldiers and four Jews -- three children and a rabbi -- in March 2012.

Mohammed Merah died after being shot by police following a prolonged stand-off at the apartment block where he lived.

Since then it has emerged that he had visited Pakistain and Afghanistan prior to his attacks and had been on the radar of French intelligence, who had gravely under-estimated the threat he posed.

Cazeneuve said earlier this month that 285 French citizens were currently fighting in Syria, despite a slew of measures to prevent people from travelling to the war-torn country.

There have been mounting concerns in La Belle France over the number of young jihadists heading to fight in Syria, with authorities fearing they could pose a major security threat if they return home as battle-hardened veteratns.

The French government unveiled an anti-terrorism plan in April to prevent the radicalization of nationals, thwart online recruitment and make it more difficult for aspiring jihadists to leave the country for Syria.

Merah, 23 when he committed the murders, said in filmed recordings that his crimes were part of Jihad -- a holy war. He died in a shootout with police at his apartment two days after he shot three children and a rabbi at the Ohr Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse.

In December 2013, police interrogated Souad Merah in Gay Paree after she was filmed saying she was proud of her younger brother Mohammed "for how he fought till the end." Filmed without her knowledge, she added: "The Jews are all about massacring the Moslems. I detest them. I think well of bin Laden. I told that to the cops. I am proud of my brother, proud, proud, proud." She later issued a statement saying she condemned his actions.

Sikhs 'at the end of their tether' storm parliament
[DAWN] Frustrated at not having their complaints heeded, a large contingent of Sikhs descended upon Parliament House on Friday to protest the desecration of their holy book in Sindh.

They occupied the lawns outside the building for around three hours before a settlement to the standoff was negotiated.

North Waziristan offensive "not full-scale operation"
[DAWN] Pakistain has not decided to launch a full-scale military operation in North Wazoo, the Interior Ministry said Saturday, adding that recent Arclight airstrikes and limited military action in the tribal region are in continuation of existing policy.

"No decision has been taken for a full scale military operation in North Waziristan and there was no decision to call off the dialogue process, nor has any such demand been made from either side," Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said in an official statement issued in Islamabad.

The statement said the recent Arclight airstrikes are in continuation of the already taken decision that any act of violence or terrorism against civilian or military targets will meet a calibrated and measured response.

The interior minister also claimed that there was no decision to hand over security of major urban cities to the army.

"No decision has been taken to hand over the security of Islamabad and other major cities to the army nor is NACTA involved in this matter in any manner," said the interior minister.

Security forces security forces have pounded krazed killer hideouts in different parts of North Waziristan during the past couple of days, stepping up pressure on faceless myrmidons in the tribal region.

The 'operation' began a day after military planes and helicopter gunships attacked suspected krazed killers' hideouts in Miranshah

#1  I have read that the Pak's are responding to Chinese pressure to suppress Chinese Islamic terrorists (Turkic Uighurs from northwest China) that are based in Pakistan. The recent ground attacks and airstrikes were against these "bad Taliban". I find the semantics difficult because in my book the only non-bad Taliban is a dead Taliban. Oh well, every little bit helps.

I have also read that the Pak military has had enough of talking with the Taliban and has told the PM that the gloves are coming off whether he wants them to or not.

Suleiman made his remarks during his farewell speech hours before his six-year term ended and two days after parliament failed for the fifth time to choose a successor.

With his departure, Leb enters a presidential vacancy with no clear sign when it will end.

Suleiman's powers will pass to Prime Minister Tammam Salam's government.

Suleiman reiterated his call for the Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah to pull its fighters out of Syria to preserve national unity.

"(Preserving) our national unity is the priority and forces us not to interfere in the issues of the neighbour no matter how dear the neighbour is," he said.

Obama Begins New Foreign-Policy Push
President to Again Explain View of U.S. Role in World
God help us.
President Barack Obama, in a commencement address at the United States Military Academy at West Point
'Cause duty honor and country are what he's all about, unless the focus groups say otherwise.
on Wednesday, will launch a new attempt to define a foreign-policy doctrine that he believes is misunderstood.
Get it - we're just too stupid to understand his brilliant foreign policy. This time TOTUS will only have small words on it.
He is expected to advocate for his view of a limited U.S. military role.
And of course the best way to limit the role of the military is not to have one. Besides, they're politically unreliable.
In Ukraine, critics have charged that a perception of U.S. weakness emboldened Russian President Vladimir Putin to take advantage by seizing Crimea.
That's a fancy way of saying that Putin thinks he's a wuss.
His speech on Wednesday will come as the White House is grappling with an unexpected standoff with Russia, which the U.S. previously considered an ally.
Who exactly in the U.S. considered Russia an ally?
Middle East peace talks have stalled, the conflict in Syria continues to deepen and the U.S. is approaching a critical point in negotiations to reach a nuclear deal with Iran by a July deadline.
To say nothing of the South China Sea issues. But other than that, things are great. As far as I know, Costa Rica has no immediate plans to invade us.
The White House official said Mr. Obama's remarks on Wednesday will begin an administration-wide effort to publicly explain his doctrine, with planned speeches over the summer by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, Secretary of State John Kerry, National Security Adviser Susan Rice and other proven liars no one believes who will "take on pieces of the agenda and engage the debate over foreign policy with an affirmative U.S. case."
At the end of which, Putin will still think Champ's a wuss.

#1  A pivotal diversion which will likely accomplish nothing at all. His holiday and time would be much better spent quietly visiting VA hospitals.

So, go back to when Bush made surprise appearance in Afghanland and repost the remarks of the usual Leftists. See if they can take it as they dished it out.

State Dept Promotes Website of Muslim Cleric Who Backed Fatwa on 'Killing of U.S. Soldiers'
[Washington Free Beacon] The State Department's Counter Terrorism (CT) Bureau promoted on Friday a controversial Muslim scholar whose organization has reportedly backed Hamas and endorsed a fatwa authorizing the murder of U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

The CT bureau on Friday tweeted out a link to the official website of Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, the vice president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), a controversial organization founded by a Muslim Brotherhood leader "who has called for the death of Jews and Americans and himself is banned from visiting the U.S.," according to Fox News.

Bin Bayyah is reported to have been one of several clerics who endorsed a 2004 fatwa that endorsed resistance against Americans fighting in Iraq, PJ Media reported in 2013, when Bin Bayyah met with Obama's National Security Council staff at the White House.
So he's perfect for the current administration...
