Afghan Police Desert Checkpoints in Sangin District
[Tolo News] A number of Afghan Police have left their checkpoints in Sangin district of Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province, local officials said.

Officials and tribe elders in Helmand province said that the departure of police has coinciding with the end of the Zulfiqar military operation.

Reports indicate that police in the district said that without national army support and co-operation they could not remain at their security checkpoints.

The Zulfiqar military operation in Sangin was launched almost 50 days ago in a bid to rid local villages of myrmidons. It has been a key operation carried out by Afghanistan National Army (ANA) members.

Earlier this week Dawlat Waziri, deputy front man at the Ministry of Defense, said that 311 bully boyz in total have been killed and 114 have been injured in Helmand province, while the operation has resulted in the deaths of 42 ANA soldiers. MPs have said that considering the financial and human losses incurred during the operation, the achievements are not that positive.

Sangin is one of the most insecure districts of Helmand which is also a major route for narcotics and drug trade, providing funding for insurgency.

Helmand Police Chief, Nabi Jan Mullahkhail said the operation is being conducted very carefully so that the lives of civilians are not put at risk.

The operation was launched after reports surfaced of an increase in poppy cultivation in the southern parts of the country where bully boyz have taken advantage as they receive funding through this activity.

Afghanistan National Army (ANA) commander Abdul Khaliq said at a presser in Sangin district that the Zulfiqar operation resulted in the deaths of at least 418 armed bully boys.

According to Khaliq 93 security personnel died and seven non-combatants were killed during the operation.

The Zulfiqar military operation was launched two months ago in a bid to rid local villages of bully boys. It has been a key operation carried out by ANA members.

Egypt Charges 379 with Murder over 2013 Cairo Unrest
[AnNahar] Egyptian prosecutors pressed murder charges against 379 people on Wednesday over the deaths of coppers and civilians during the bloody dispersal of Islamist protest camps in the capital in 2013.

It was not immediately clear how many of the defendants were in jug but it was the latest in a string of controversial mass trials to be announced over the violence that followed the army's overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July that year.

Prosecutors charge that the defendants took part in an "armed sit-in" at the capital's Nahda Square in August 2013, and in "armed marches that attacked civilians" in several parts of Cairo.

"Their action resulted in casualties among coppers and civilians," a prosecution statement said.

Cairo's Nahda and Rabaa squares were the locations of protest camps set up by Morsi's supporters that were broken up by police on August 14, 2013 at the cost of hundreds of lives.

Human Rights Watch
... During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, HRW received a pledge from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, of which George Soros is Chairman, for general support totaling $100,000,000. The grant is being paid in installments of $10,000,000 over ten years.Through June 30, 2013, HRW had received $30,000,000 towards the fulfillment of the pledge....
described it at the time as "one of the largest killings of demonstrators in a single day in recent history."

Prosecutors charged that during the dispersal of the Nahda Square protest camp the defendants used "force and violence against the police".

"This led to the killing of two coppers and wounding of 27 others," they said.

Other charges pressed against the defendants include illegal imprisonment and torture, forcibly resisting the security forces, weapons possession, occupying public property and blocking public transport.

U.S., French Forces Aid Search for Hostage Taken in Burkina Faso
[AnNahar] The U.S. and French military are assisting in the search for a Romanian mineworker kidnapped in Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
and believed to have been taken into Mali, Burkina Faso's security minister has said.

Both the La Belle France and U.S. have drones based in Niger, which neighbors Burkina Faso, as part of efforts to combat Islamist Death Eaters in the region.

"Investigations are continuing... with our strategic partners, the French and the Americans, who have in-depth surveillance capabilities," security minister Auguste Denise Barry told news hounds on Tuesday.

Barry also spoke of being in regular contact with the authorities in Mali and Niger on the search.

He said while there had been speculation that the kidnappers had taken the security officer from the mine into Mali before moving into Niger, the site of the abduction was "much closer to the Niger border".

The security officer was taken on Saturday when five gunnies attacked a manganese mine in Tambao, 350 kilometers (220 miles) northeast of the capital, Ouagadougou.

The unidentified gunnies took off in the direction of the nearby border with Mali, according to security officials in both countries.

Kidnappings of foreigners, often for ransom, occasionally occur in Mali and Niger but not usually in Burkina Faso, a landlocked Sahel country.

Two Policemen Shot Dead in Saudi Capital
[AnNahar] Two Saudi policemen were killed when their patrol came under fire in Riyadh early on Wednesday, police said, in the second drive-by shooting targeting police in less than two weeks.

The pre-dawn attack came in an eastern district of the capital, a police spokesman said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

"A security patrol was carrying out its duties in east Riyadh when it came under fire from an unidentified vehicle," the spokesman said.

On March 29, two policemen were wounded in a similar attack in Riyadh, just days after the Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef ordered that security be tightened nationwide as the kingdom launched air strikes against Iran-backed Shiite rebels in neighboring Yemen.

US, France, Germany dial India to get their citizens out of Yemen
NEW DELHI: US, besides economically developed France, Germany and Sweden, besides 22 nations have sought India's assistance to evacuate its citizens from violence hit Yemen.
There was a time when the Indians would have called us...
An US government travel advisory for Yemen pointed out that India would offer its assistance to evacuate American citizens from Sanna to Djibouti. The US citizens have been advised to contact Indian diplomats in Embassy at Sanna for assistance for evacuation either by boat or air.
Did we send our people to a closed airport or shuttered dock? Again?
This is significant considering the fact that the US has strong naval presence as well as deployment of its Air Force in West Asia. France also has presence of its Navy in the region to counter piracy.
We also have an Air Force that has transport planes that can go anywhere, Marines who can protect our citizens, and a Navy that can be just about anywhere in the world in short order. I think we have the capability. What we're lacking is leadership and will...
Diplomatic sources told ET that Indian assistance has been sought due to the country's geographical location and wherewithal to undertake evacuation. It has so far evacuated over 2,000 out of its 4,000 citizens in Yemen besides some Persons of Indian origin there.

"Roles have reversed with countries like USA are seeking India's assistance in violence hit region," a source pointed out.

Iran Sends Navy Vessels Near Yemen Amid Airstrikes
SANAA, Yemen -- Iran dispatched a naval destroyer and another vessel Wednesday to waters near Yemen as the United States quickened weapons supply to the Saudi-led coalition striking rebels there, underlining how foreign powers are deepening their involvement in the conflict.

Iran's English-language state broadcaster Press TV quoted Rear Adm. Habibollah Sayyari as saying the ships would be part of an anti-piracy campaign "safeguarding naval routes for vessels in the region."
And, along the way, to escort the merchant vessels delivering arms to the Houthis...
The maneuver comes amid an intense Saudi-led Gulf Arab air campaign targeting the Yemeni rebels, known as Houthis, who come from a Shiite sect. Critics say Shiite power Iran backs the Houthis, though both the Islamic Republic and the rebels deny any direct military assistance.

Speaking a day earlier in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken blamed the violence in Yemen on the Houthis, and forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, saying that the U.S. is committed to defending Saudi Arabia.

"We have expedited weapons deliveries, we have increased our intelligence sharing, and we have established a joint coordination and planning cell in the Saudi operations center," he said in a statement to reporters after meeting with Saudi royals and Yemen's President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who fled his country amid rebel advances.
Ynet adds:
The Iranian Fars news agency reported Wednesday that the Iranian navy has sent two military ships -- a logistical ship
...whatever that is...
and a destroyer -- to the Gulf of Aden near Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and to the Bab-el-Mandeb strait in order to protect maritime routes. The ships were to patrol the area for three months, according to the report.

#1  The Houthis control 2 strategic islands (one being Perim) in the Strait, and I'll bet that 'logistics' ship is packed with supplies for them and will dock on the island.

The Houthis have fortified Perim island and it looks like it will take a large force and a few sunk ships to get them out.

This could get very interesting.

China devastates Uighur family in anti-terror raids
[RFA] Security forces in Xinjiang have killed three people and jailed two others from an ethnic Uighur family during a three-month operation targeting terror suspects, according to official media and a relative of one of those killed.

Tursun Hoshur and his daughter Maynur Tursun were sentenced to 12 and eight years respectively, for harboring "terrorists". The two had been recovering after being shot by authorities during a June 2014 raid on their home, which also saw Hoshur's wife gunned down when she refused to open her door to police, state media reported.

Two sons of the family, Turdimemet Tursun and Nurmet Tursun, were among nine Uighur "terror suspects" gunned down by police in a second incident on August 1 last year, the report said.

Yasin Hoshur, Tursun's brother, who served as the Communist Party secretary of Dongjay village and village chief for 32 years before retiring, said that the two incidents had destroyed his family.

Europe
EU Puts Iranian Groups, Bank Back on Sanctions List
[AnNahar] The EU put more than 30 Iranian shipping companies and a top bank back on its nuclear sanctions list on Wednesday after a European court had earlier struck them off citing insufficient evidence.

Last week, EU-mediated talks between six major powers and Iran on its contested nuclear program produced a framework accord which could see all sanctions lifted in return for measures to prevent Tehran acquiring atomic weapons.

In January, the General Court of the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
ruled that 37 shipping companies and Bank Tejarat should not be subject to sanctions because the evidence against them was inadequate.

The court, the second highest in the 28-nation bloc, then suspended the decision to allow time for the EU to appeal or seek their re-imposition on different legal grounds.

The EU's Official Journal said Wednesday that as a result, 32 of the companies had been reinstated, along with Bank Tejarat, "on the basis of a new statement of reasons."

"Bank Tejarat provides significant support to the government of Iran by offering financial resources and financing services for oil and gas development projects," the Official Journal said.

"Bank Tejarat can (also) be identified as being involved in the procurement of prohibited goods and technology," it added.

In addition, the EU took three individuals off the sanctions list but gave no reasons.

Western sanctions against Iran date back many years but were stepped up sharply from 2010 led by the United States on growing fears Tehran was trying to build a nuclear weapon.

Iran insisted that its nuclear program was purely for civilian uses and condemned the sanctions regime.

Under last week's accord, which must be finalized by end-June, U.S., EU and U.N. sanctions will be progressively lifted as long as Iran sticks to its commitments.

Nearly Half of European Jihadists in Syria, Iraq are French
[AnNahar] Nearly half of European jihadists known to have traveled to territory held by the holy warrior Islamic State

group are French, a report by the country's upper house Senate revealed Wednesday.

Just over 1,430 French people have made their way to Iraq and Syria, representing 47 percent of jihadists from Europe that are known and accounted for, Senator Jean-Pierre Sueur, who spearheaded a parliamentary probe into jihadist networks, told news hounds.

According to Sueur, French domestic intelligence services are currently monitoring more than 3,000 people suspected of being involved in one way or another in Syrian networks -- a 24-percent increase since November last year.

Some 85 Frenchies are thought to have died in IS-held zones while two are being held in Syria, the report said.

Of particular concern to intelligence services, some 200 have left to come back to La Belle France, prompting fears they may stage attacks mirroring the January 7-9 shooting spree that left 17 dead.

Sueur added that 152 Islamist murderous Moslems were currently in prison in La Belle France.

Authorities are worried about prison radicalization and have unveiled a raft of measures to try and fight this, such as hiring an extra 60 Moslem chaplains on top of the 182 who already work in jails.

Spain Arrests 11 Suspected of Islamic State Links

group, including six Moslem converts, some of whom intended to launch attacks in the Catalonia region, officials said.

It was the latest of scores of such raids as Europe seeks to stop recruitment by the holy warrior group, which has claimed the killings of many foreign hostages.

Wednesday's arrests followed a year-long operation involving hundreds of police who made 13 raids around Barcelona and five other areas of the northeastern Catalonia region.

"We are dealing with a cell openly linked to Daesh," another name for the group calling itself Islamic State, said Catalonia's regional interior minister Ramon Espadaler.

"It recruited young people and radicalized them. It sent some of them to Syria and Iraq and had also set up an operational cell which was willing to launch attacks in Catalonia."

He added however that "at no time did the existence of this cell pose a danger because it was under surveillance at all times."

Police arrested 10 men and a woman aged between 17 and 45. Five of them were Moroccans, five Spanish and one Paraguayan -- the latter six converts to Islam -- Espadaler said.

They face charges including belonging to a terrorist group, recruitment and indoctrination, and incitement to terrorism.

- Salafist mosques -
Spain has raided a number of alleged recruitment cells, most of them in its North African territories of Ceuta and Melilla as well as in Catalonia.

On April 1, a Moroccan living in Catalonia was remanded in jug after allegedly seeking to send her 16-year-old twins to fight with jihadists in Syria, a year after another of her sons died in that country.

Spain's Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said that of the 1,264 mosques in Spain, 98 are devoted to the hardline Salafist branch of Islam. Of those, 50 are in Catalonia, he told Catalunya Radio.

Espadaler said, however, that "it would be outrageous to say that mosques in Catalonia are preaching" jihadism.

"There are some places that pose a problem and we are monitoring them."

Scores of alleged Islamists facing terrorism charges are being held in Spain, authorities say.

About 100 people from Spain are suspected of having joined jihadist fighters in Iraq and Syria, and fear they may return to launch attacks.

Hundreds more such snuffies from La Belle France, Britannia and Germany are also thought to have traveled to those countries to fight.

"The jihadist phenomenon is a reality," Espadaler said.

"It exists in our country, in our neighboring European countries and worldwide, but we also have police capable of detecting radicalization and of fighting this phenomenon."

The network broken up on Wednesday had sent four jihadists to conflict zones but three of them were arrested in Bulgaria in December, Espadaler said. An international arrest warrant has been issued for the fourth.

Tsarnaev Guilty On All Charges In Boston Marathon Bombing
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was convicted on all charges Wednesday in the Boston Marathon bombing by a jury that will now decide whether the 21-year-old should be executed or shown mercy for what his lawyer says was a crime criminal masterminded by his big brother.

The former college student folded his arms, fidgeted and looked down at the defense table in federal court as he listened to the word "guilty" recited on all 30 counts against him, including conspiracy and deadly use of a weapon of mass destruction. Seventeen of those counts are punishable by death.

The verdict, reached after a day and a half of deliberations, was practically a foregone conclusion, given his lawyer's startling admission at the trial's outset that Tsarnaev carried out the terror attack with his now-dead older brother, Tamerlan.

Top commie nabbed in Mindanao
[Sun Star] A high-ranking leader of the New People's Army and another militant were arrested Tuesday evening in Davao City.

The NPA leader was identified as Vincent Estrada, also known by the aliases Brod, Bords, Oban, Obama and Dennis Montecillo. He was arrested Tuesday night along with his comrade, Zacarias delos Santos Mancia Jr.

Major General Eduardo Ano said the arrest of the two militants is expected to create a big vacuum in communist leadership in the Davao region. Ano said Estrada was a highly-valued officer, difficult for the communists to replace.

He said, "We urge the other NPA rebels who are being deceived by their leaders to surrender and embrace a peaceful life in the mainstream society. Being in the armed group, you can run but you cannot hide forever.".

Seven Thai soldiers to be charged with murder in botched raid
[Khaosod] A Thai army commander has formally apologized a deadly raid that a fact-finding commission says killed four young men who had no connection to the Islamist insurgency. The four men were gunned down by security forces during a raid in Pattani province on March 25.

The operation was an attempt to arrest insurgents, and initially identified two of the slain as members of a militant group. The military told reporters that three assault rifles were found next to the deceased, and that security officers only began shooting after the suspects opened fire.

However, an independent panel ruled that the four men were not related to the insurgency, or armed when the raid took place, citing forensic evidence and witnesses’ testimonies. Lt.Gen. Prakarn Chollayuth, the provincial army commander and its neighboring provinces, said he accepted the findings and apologized to the families of the victims.

Seven soldiers will be charged with murder for their role in the raid.

IS torches tons of food for Syria's Yarmouk Camp

snuffies have torched tons of food meant for refugees at Yarmouk Camp in Damascus, according to reports.

The convoy carrying the supplies was forced to stop by ISIS fighters in the Syrian city of Halab, the Independent newspaper reported on Wednesday. A short time later, ISIS posted images of murderous Moslems burning the food aid on the group's social media accounts.

"The food, especially meat and chicken, was not prepared according to Islamic codes and it is not halal [permissible by Islam]," posted an ISIS leader from the Syrian city of Raqqa.

International humanitarian organizations in charge of delivering the food denied the ISIS claim, saying the meat was prepared according to Islamic rules.

Islamic State snuffies infiltrated the Paleostinian refugee camp of Yarmouk on April 1.

maybe they were confused by the labeling

#4  I don't think they gave a damn whether it was or wasn't mo approved, it was going to the Yarmooks, who ISJV are attacking. If this was a quick check point or light attack vs. the convoy, they may not have had time to capture the food - so they burn it and say the rations were not mo approved to justify of sorts the burning.

I do like the comments (paraphrased):
"I can't believe they would let refugees starve :("

Newsflash junior. They are digging up mass graves of their war captives, think they give a damn if their enemy is short on food? Hell, probably lu lu ing for hours.
