province of Afghanistan, which is adjacent to Pakistain's Khyber Agency.

Security sources say the US drone fired two missiles, killing four gunnies and injuring several in the attack.

A myrmidon hideout was also destroyed, they said, adding that all those killed belonged to the Islamic State group.

The details could not be independently verified. Tracking of drone strikes in Afghanistan is difficult since many of them take place in remote regions and are not reported.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Police foiled rocket attacks on Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
city on Thursday.

General Abdul Rahman Rahimi, the Kabul Police Chief told news hounds that murderous Moslems had placed four BM1 rockets in a grape garden in Tarakhil area, the center of Deh Sabz District, in order to launch them on Kabul city.

He said upon receiving information, police raided that garden on time and recovered the rockets which were ready to be fired.

General Rahimi praised residents of the area for assisting their security forces. The rockets were later defused by police.

This comes a day after a suicide kaboom left four people killed and 41 others maimed in Paghman District of Kabul.

The jacket wallah was driving a vehicle laden with explosives and rammed it on to the wall of Paghman Police HQ on Wednesday which resulted in the deaths and injuries of 45 people.

province of Afghanistan, it has been reported.

According to the local tribal elders the affiliates of the terror group have also executed hundreds of people including civilians amid ongoing violence in parts of Nangarhar province where brutal clash also continue between the ISIS and Talibs.

Haji Azim Khan, a tribal elder in Achin district, said the terror group has also started forced recruitment of young men and children to fight for the group.

The ISIS loyalists were also going from house to house to identify young women and girls and forcing marriages on them, Khan told The Telegraph, adding that anyone who had previously worked with the government was considered a spy and had been executed.

Frustrated with the growing atrocities of the terror group, the district governor of Achin has called for a public uprising against the loyalists of the terror group.

"Everyone who has a gun, a sword, anything, should fight these cruel people," Muhahid said, warning that the district was badly suffering due to the growing insurgency activities of the terror group.

Russian tanker arrested 'for smuggling' then seemingly released
[Libya Herald] Naval authorities based in Tripol say they captured a Russian oil tanker and its crew trying to smuggle oil from the western port of Zuwara yesterday.

An official said coastguard units had captured the vessel, the Mekhanik Chebotarev, detaining 11 Russian crew, including one woman, inside Libyan territorial waters.

The seizure unfolded in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, with reports that naval vessels from Italia and Russia raced to the scene but did not intervene. Rooters news agency quoted a senior Tripoli

official, Twafik Alskir, as saying: "A Russian-flagged oil tanker was captured this afternoon when it tried to smuggle oil off Zuwara."

The vessel was moved to Tripoli port later Wednesday but this afternoon marinetraffic.com showed it leaving the port, with its ship tracker stating its destination as Malta. However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
it is not clear at this point if it has ben released or is being taken to another Libyan port

Russia, whose embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment, has yet to issue a statement on the matter. Nor is there any news on the status of the crew members.

Zuwara has no oil terminal, and oil tankers do not normally visit the seas around, with the nearest terminal at Zawiya to the east.

GNC stormed by militia: reports
[Libya Herald] Armed men are reported to have stormed the General National Congress (GNC) in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
this afternoon as it met to discuss acceptance of the amended Libya Dialogue Draft and to propose names for the posts of prime minister and deputy prime minister.

Heavy gunfire was heard across town. It is reported, but unconfirmed, that those behind the attack are Dialogue opponent Salah Badi
...a Misrata militia commander, self-appointed colonel and a member of the Wafa Islamist bloc. He was cashiered from the Libyan army in 1992 because he was nuts...
, Sami Saadi, and Abdurraouf Al-Manaie.

At the time of writing, it was not known whether the session had been abandoned or not. There are, however, reports, also unconfirmed, that at least one member has been seized. He is said be Abdulgassem Gzeit, a prominent support of the Dialogue.

Misrata's Haboos brigade is said have been ordered to go and protect the GNC.

Earlier, as if in anticipation of a possible attack from opponents of a deal, military vehicles had surrounded the GNC building in Tripoli today with roads closed off to the public.

Although UN Special Envoy Bernardino Leon has amended the Dialogue Draft in line with all the demands presented by the GNC, there are voices within and outside the GNC still opposed to the deal. These include not only Badi, Saadi and Al-Manaie (who has threatened legal action against anyone who approves it) but also GNC president Nuri Abu Sahmain and the controversial Grand Mufti Sheikh Sadek Al-Gharian.

They all insist Leon accept that the GNC is Libya's sole legitimate legislature. Ghariani was reported yesterday saying that forces must rally to the GNC, that it was the only legislature and that the Dialogue deal must be rejected.

Leon had given the GNC delegates until yesterday to return with approval and with their list of candidates.

Meanwhile the House of Representatives (HoR) Dialogue team is seen as split over the amended Draft. The HoR has rejected the changes, calling back its delegates to Tobruk, and is to debate the matter on Sunday. Two have returned, Sadiq Idris Mohammed and Saleh Huma. However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
Emhemed Shouaib, the Deputy President of HoR and head of the team and Abubakr Baera, have remained in Skhirat.

AFP could not verify if the man was indeed a Saudi soldier and Riyadh had yet to comment on the claim.

Several thousand troops from coalition countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are also reported to have entered the country.

Some 4,000 migrants enter Croatia in past 24 hours: national TV
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Some 4,000 migrants have entered Croatia from Serbia in the past 24 hours after Hungary sealed its border, national state-run HRT television reported on Thursday.

New migrants were continuing to enter the European Union

(EU) member on its eastern border, which became their new route on the journey to western Europe, the Croatian channel reported.

A special train transporting some 800 migrants from Tovarnik, near the Serbian border, arrived in Dugo Selo, near Zagreb, around 0330 GMT, an AFP photographer reported.

The migrants were being transferred to a reception centre in nearby Jezevo.

Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic said late Wednesday that the country was prepared for the arrival of migrants but could not cope if the numbers increased dramatically.

"We are ready to (provide) asylum to a few thousand people and we can handle that, but we are not ready for tens of thousands," Pusic told HRT.

"We do not have capacities" for such an influx, she added.

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic was to hold talks in Zagreb later Thursday with his Austrian counterpart, Chancellor Werner Faymann. Milanovic would then travel to Ljubljana to meet Slovenian premier Miro Cerar, his office said.

Masked attackers throw Molotov cocktail in public bus in Istanbul
[Hurriyet Daily News] Three masked people attacked a public bus in Istanbul's central Beyoglu district with Molotov cocktails late Sept. 16.

No casualties were reported though the bus was damaged in the attack.

The three masked attackers threw a Molotov cocktail inside the bus and left a package in front of it before they escaped the scene. The incident took place at 9:00 p.m. Sept. 16 on Piyalepasa Street in Beyoglu when the attackers stopped the bus which runs between Sisli and Yenikapi on the European side of the city. After the passengers left the bus, the attackers threw a Molotov cocktail inside and broke the windows before fleeing. A team of bomb experts were called in to defuse the package, which was found to contain newspapers rather than explosives.

40 PKK militants killed in Cizre during eight-day curfew: Governor
[Hurriyet Daily News] Around 40 outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) gunnies were killed during the eight-day curfew in the Cizre district of the southeastern province of Sirnak, Sirnak Governor Ali Ihsan Su has said.

"The number of PKK gunnies killed during the period of the curfew is estimated to be around 40," Su said in a press briefing held in coordination with Sirnak Police Department Head Celal Sel and Sirnak Gendarmerie Command Head Sami Özturan on Sept. 17.

He added that 17 suspected gunnies were tossed into the calaboose in operations during the curfew between Sept. 4 and 11.

Su said 25 coppers were maimed in security operations during the eight-day curfew and seven guarded police vehicles were damaged as gunnies carried out attacks with 21 rockets, 19 hand grenades, and two road-side bombings.

As many as 1,150 kilograms of explosives and 39 bombs were eliminated during the operations, while 45 trenches and barricades were destroyed and long-range rifles and ammunition were seized, Su added.

The governor said most of the operations targeted gunnies in Cizre's Nur neighborhood, and pre-operation assessments estimated that operations would have to continue for seven to ten days because of the presence of civilians used as human shields.

U.S. Sends Guantanamo Inmate Back to Morocco
[AnNahar] The United States announced Thursday it has repatriated a Moroccan prisoner who spent 13 years at Guantanamo Bay, as part of a long-running effort to close the U.S. military prison in Cuba.

The Pentagon said Younis Abdurrahman Chekkouri was sent home to Morocco following a "comprehensive" security review that saw six U.S. departments and agencies unanimously approve him for transfer.

He was transferred on Wednesday, said a Pentagon official, who did not say whether Chekkouri would be imprisoned, sent to his room or released.

The 47-year-old was captured by Pak forces in late December 2001 with a group of several dozen Arab fighters who had fled the Tora Bora cave complex in eastern Afghanistan, a stronghold of the Taliban and its al-Qaeda allies.

Transferred to Guantanamo in May 2002, he was never charged.

Following his release, 115 detainees still remain in the prison opened to hold terror suspects following the September 11 attacks in 2001.

That's less than half the number who were detained there (242) when President Barack Obama
Jedi mind meld...
took office in January 2009.

Obama has vowed to close the prison but has struggled to do so in the face of domestic opposition at home in Congress and abroad from allies reluctant to take in one-time terror suspects.

He now has just a little more than a year to fulfill his promise.

Among the options available to shutter the prison camp, the Pentagon is weighing potentially transferring detainees to U.S. military prisons at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina.

Taliban militants kill at least 19 people at Pakistani air force base
[WAPO] ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- Taliban militants carried out their deadliest attack against the Pakistani military in more than six months on Friday when they stormed an air force compound near Peshawar and killed at least 16 people inside a mosque.

The attack unfolded shortly before dawn when 13 Pakistani Taliban militants entered the compound from two different directions, according to Asim Bajwa, chief spokesman for Pakistan's military. Security officials quickly engaged the militants, but at least one of them managed to enter the mosque as morning prayers were underway.

Bajwa said 16 people were killed in the mosque. It was not immediately clear if they were military personnel or civilians. As firefights with the other militants continued elsewhere, an army captain and three air force technicians were also killed. At least 20 other army or air force personnel were injured during the clashes.

Eventually, all 13 terrorists were shot and killed before they could penetrate "deep" into the compound, Bajwa said.
Prompted by an anti-Mohammad video no doubt.

Indian firing along LoC kills three civilians, injures more
[DAWN] Three Pak non-combatants were killed on Thursday when Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) resorted to 'unprovoked' firing across the Line of Control (LoC) in Nakyal sector.

"Indian firing had been intense and ferocious for two hours, but the intensity has subsided now," said Nazakat Hussain, assistant commissioner in Nakyal.

He added that a 12-year old girl, Laiba Shabbir, died in Oli village, while a 55-year old man, Sufi Amin, and a 19-year old boy, Zahid, died in Mohra Dharoti village after mortar shells landed on their homes.

The assistant commissioner added that the number of casualties could be higher, but the administration was unable to ascertain details from the vulnerable areas due to continued Indian firing.

A statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) added that Indian forces also resorted to unprovoked firing in Kotli sector.

Pak troops have responded in a befitting manner to Indian firing. The statement also stated that the exchange of firing continues at Nakyal and Kotli sectors.

#1  If I was a civilian in an artillery zone, perhaps I would consider moving to another area? OR praying to Allah who always listens to anyone not wearing a yarmulka ( Allah hates that ) since he is Beneficent and Compassionate and I always said PBUH.

Either that or get me some fast skates and a bunker.

Plot to attack Kamra airbase foiled
[DAWN] KARACHI: Police on Thursday claimed to have enjugged
You have the right to remain silent...
from Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
an Afghanistan-trained myrmidon who was planning to carry out a terror act at the Kamra airbase in Punjab.

Counter-Terrorism Department SSP Junaid Ahmed Sheikh said police arrested Umer Hayat alias Darvesh from MPR Colony, Orangi, on a tip off. He said the suspect was associated with Tehrik-e-Imarat Islamia, Afghanistan.

Speaking at presser at his office, the SSP said the held suspect is also a jacket wallah who had allegedly trained two suicide bombers identified as Raz Mohammed and Taj Mohammed.

"The purported suicide bombers had been sent to Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

to carry out a terror act at the Kamra airbase," said the official.

"But they failed due to extensive security arrangements there and returned back to Karachi."

The suspect was also planning to carry out terror attacks on Eidgahs in Karachi during Eidul Azha, in addition to planning attacks on military installations in the metropolis.

"He is an expert in preparing suicide jackets and brainwashing suicide bombers," said the CTD officer.

The held suspect received training from Afghanistan and also fought there, said the officer, adding that he was also allegedly involved in deadly terror acts against law enforcers in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
.

"He basically hailed from KP and came to Karachi after the devastating earthquake in 2005."

The SSP said the suspect's team consisted of 50 members.

"He has given names of seven hardcore Lions of Islam and forces are carrying out operations to arrest them to foil their nefarious designs," said the police officer.

Iraq
British Air Strikes Kill 330 IS Fighters
[AnNahar] British air strikes in Iraq have killed around 330 Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group fighters since they began in September 2014, Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said in a statement on Thursday.
Some time ago, as I recall, it was reported that the Americans had killed 10,000 ISIS fighters. So lots of jihadis are being sent to their just reward.
"The estimated number of IS fighters killed as a result of UK strikes from September 2014 to 31 August 2015 is around 330," the minister said, in response to a question from Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.

"We do not believe there have been any civilian casualties as a result of UK strike activity," he added in the reply, which was published on parliament's official website.

Britannia currently has eight Tornado GR4 fighters and several Reaper drones conducting strikes, as well as a Sentinel and an Airseeker -- both surveillance craft.

Fallon confirmed in August that Britannia had carried out more than 250 air strikes in Iraq.

Britannia announced last month it was extending its air strikes against IS group targets in Iraq by a year to March 2017.

The announcement represents a second reprieve for the squadron of ageing Tornado GR4 fighter bombers currently based in Cyprus which was due to be disbanded first this year and then next, and will now be kept on.

"We want to ensure we maintain this crucial operational tempo and so we will extend the lifetime of Number 12 Squadron for a further year to March 2017," Fallon told the BBC during a visit to Baghdad last year.

The Tornado jets are carrying out air strikes, reconnaissance and surveillance over Iraq as part of US-led operations.

Britannia is not currently taking part in air strikes on targets in Syria, although it was announced last week that an Royal Air Force (RAF) drone over the country had killed a British jihadist planning attacks on Britannia.

In 2013, Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
's plan to join international military action in Syria was defeated by the House of Commons due to opposition from the Labour party.

Prime Minister David Cameron is now mulling a second vote to gain support for Syria strikes this year.

He hopes the new Labor chief could give him the support needed to get the move through the House of Commons, where he has a majority of only 12.

Parliament approved the Iraq air strikes last September.

82 ISIS militants, including senior learders, flee Mosul for Syria
[IraqiNews] Dohuk -- Media official of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
Saeed Mamouzini announced on Thursday the escape of 82 ISIS bandidos gunnies from Mosul into Syria, attributing the reason to the collapse of morale and splits in the ranks of the organization.

Mamouzini said in an interview for IraqiNews.com, "82 bandidos gunnies from ISIS fled during the last two days from the city of Mosul to Syria," noting that "Among the escapees were three leaders belonging to ISIS."

Mamouzini attributed the reasons for this to "the collapse of the morale among the bandidos gunnies in Mosul and splits in the organization in Mosul," adding that "ISIS leader, His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
has recently arrived in Mosul from Syria in order to raise the morale of gunnies."

#1  collapse of morale and splits in the ranks of the organization

Basing it on open-source, it seems because the Syrian front is being run by "internationals" using their own people in their units, plus first pick of the would-be fighters coming in, with Turkish logistic support (at a minimum.) Plus, the Islamic State has taken over territory that is essentially no-man's land with a scattered and dispirited populace.

Meanwhile the Iraqi front is likely being run by ex-Saddam Baathists with a force consisting of a combination of locals, probably some Saudis and other AP volunteers, and 'rejects' from the Syrian front. I suspect the Iraqi front is also second in line for war materiel. Much of the captured Iraqi materiel has been moved into Syria. Factor in urban terrain, strong tribal organization, a dislike of outsiders, etc.

Official: 90% of displaced residents have returned to Tikrit’s Alam
[Rudaw] The director of Tikrit's Alam district in Salahadin province, Abdulla Sabah, told Rudaw on Thursday that 90 percent of refugees and displaced families from the district have returned home.

"After pushing out ISIS from the districts inside Salahadin province, we managed to clear the area from mines and explosives. This encouraged the refugees to return back," Sabah said.

In March, Iraqi security forces were able to retake control of Tikrit, a city located northwest of Baghdad, after it was seized by ISIS fighters.

The oil-rich city of Baiji north of Tikrit is still a center of fierce fighting.

Police gird for Temple Mount violence Friday as unrest persists
[IsraelTimes] Men under 40 will be barred from compound; PM tells UN's Ban Paleostinian rioters aim to break status quo; rocks, Molotov cocktails thrown and bus set on fire Thursday night

Police officials said they would limit Moslem access to the Temple Mount Friday morning as the capital geared up for possible violence after a week that saw several heavy festivities atop the holy site.

Police said they would prohibit the entry of men under 40 to the compound after receiving intelligence reports indicating "young Arabs" planned to disrupt the peace during Moslem Friday prayers at the site, a spokesperson said. Women at all ages will be allowed on the esplanade, known as Haram al-Sharif to Moslems.

The move comes as unrest persists in some parts of the capital, touched off by days of festivities between Israeli forces and Moslem protesters at the Temple Mount.

Police have beefed up their presence across the city, including bolstering positions in the Old City and near the Temple Mount, in a bid to quell the protests.

The rock throwing, which turned deadly Sunday night when an Israeli motorist was hit with rocks thrown from a Paleostinian neighborhood and crashed his car in a southern neighborhood of the city, has vexed officials, and politicians have vowed to crack down on stonings and other "popular" attacks via harsher punishments and allowing increased use of force, including live fire.

Several rock and firekabooms were reported in parts of Jerusalem Thursday evening. A bus driver was lightly maimed when rocks were thrown at his bus near the Hizmeh checkpoint. Elsewhere, near Mount Scopus, Paleostinians coming from the village of Isawiyah threw Molotov cocktails at a guard post.

Rocks were also hurled at the light rail near the Shuafat neighborhood, causing damage but no casualties.

A bus also caught fire near the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Ras al-Amud, in a suspected Molotov cocktail attack. The driver said he left the bus after being hit by rocks and returned to find the vehicle alight. No injures were reported in that incident.

Police preparations for violence during Friday prayers comes after Thursday and Wednesday offered some respite from three consecutive days of violence near the al Aqsa Mosque from Sunday, the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and until Tuesday when the holiday ended.

The violence began Sunday when police, acting on a tip from the Shin Bet security service, raided the mount and found pipe bombs and other improvised weapons, apparently prepared in advance for an organized riot. Lat Sunday night, Alexander Levlovitz, 64, was killed when a rock thrown at his car in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood caused him to lose control of his car and crash.

Acting Police Commissioner Bentzi Sau said Tuesday that police actions on the Temple Mount in the previous days were based on valid intelligence reports, and vowed to bring violent protesters to justice.

"Over the past three days, we have seen attempts by a number of individuals who are trying to aggravate and exacerbate the security situation in Jerusalem, and destabilize the security and peaceful coexistence in the city," he said.

Sau ordered an open-ended reinforcement of Israel's security presence in the capital until calm was restored. Hundreds of additional officers are being deployed, with the goal of thwarting more violence and arresting those responsible for attacks in recent days. Sau said there'd been "an upsurge" in attacks, including stone-throwing and petrol-bomb throwing at police.

At least 30 people killed in regime air strikes on Aleppo
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Syrian regime air strikes on Wednesday have killed 30 civilians in rebel-held neighborhoods of northern city of Aleppo, activists and a monitoring group said.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights said at least 20 people, including 3 children and a woman, were killed in barrel kaboom on al-Mashhad neighborhood as well more 7 victims have bit the dust in a missile attack on al-Kallaseh neighborhood.

SNHR also reported death of 3 people in regime shelling on al-Sukari neighborhood of Aleppo Wednesday.

Regime's devastating air campaign was extended by Tuesday when rebels' mortar rounds on government-held neighborhoods in western Aleppo, had killed 38 people, including 14 children, inthe Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Activists say the Syrian military frequently uses helicopters to drop crude barrel bombs - giant canisters packed with hundreds of pounds of explosives and scrap metal - on rebel-held towns and neighborhoods.

Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

has denied that barrel bombs are used by the military.

Al-Shamiya Front said its air defense battalion had downed early Tuesday a Syrian army helicopter near al-Nayrab airport north of Aleppo, the key rebel group said in statement.

Abu Hassan ,rebel commander told Zaman al-Wasl that the helicopter was filled by food and basic staples for the besieged soldiers in Nayrab airport for over three years.

ISIS commander was star pupil of SOF training in country of Georgia
[Business Insider] Aside from ISIS' 'caliph' Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Georgian ex-commando Omar al-Shishani might be the most recognizable and popular of the powerful militant group's leaders.

Sporting a recognizable red beard and happy to pose for photos, Shishani has acted as a very public face for some of ISIS' most notorious successes.

It was Shishani who posed with the stolen US Humvees that ISIS had seized from Mosul and brought back into Syria.

And it was Shishani who had led successful ISIS military campaigns throughout Syria as well as a blitz through western Iraq that put the group within 100 miles of Baghdad.

These military successes are not simply the result of any innate military capabilities. Instead, Shishani spent years conducting military campaigns against the Russians, first as a Chechen rebel and then as a soldier in the Georgian military. During Shishani's four years in the military, from 2006 to 2010, his unit received some degree of training from American special forces units.

"He was a perfect soldier from his first days, and everyone knew he was a star," an unnamed former comrade who is still active in the Georgian military told McClatchy DC. "We were well trained by American special forces units, and he was the star pupil."

French Officials: Leading Algerian Jihadist Killed in Syria in May
[AnNahar] Leading Algerian jihadist Said Arif was killed in Syria in May by a U.S. drone, French officials speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
told Agence La Belle France Presse on Thursday.

The death of the 49-year-old, considered a major recruiter of imported muscle for jihadist groups in Syria, had been reported on social media in recent months but had not been confirmed until now.

Arif was a deserter from the Algerian army who first joined Al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan in the 1990s.

He was tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in 2003 and put on trial in La Belle France with 25 others accused of plotting to blow up the Eiffel Tower and attack shopping centers and cop shoppes.

Arif was also accused of planning an attack on a Christmas market in the eastern French city of Strasbourg.

In 2007, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the planning of those attacks but was released in 2011.

A court ordered that he be expelled from La Belle France but the European Court of Human Rights blocked any attempt to send him to Algeria on the basis that he risked being tortured.

Instead, he was ordered to remain under house arrest in a hotel in the small town of Brioude in central La Belle France, where he was frequently filmed by media walking to his daily appointments at the local cop shoppe, with a long white beard.

In an interview with a local newspaper he said "suicide kabooms that have an economic impact are the best form of attack for Islamists". Such statements earned him an even longer sentence.

One morning in May 2013, he disappeared, having stolen a car belonging to the hotel owner's daughter-in-law.

The car was spotted in Belgium, from where Arif traveled to Syria.

There, he rose to become one of the leaders of the Jund al-Aqsa jihadist group, part of the coalition with the Al-Nusra Front.

In 2004, the United States added him to the list of "Designated Global Terrorists" and intelligence services considered him one of the main recruiting sergeants for foreign volunteers, especially French speakers.
