-Lurid Crime Tales-
'You won't let us sleep, we're not letting you sleep.' Five siblings rescued from Turpin family 'house of horrors' were placed with foster parents now charged with molesting two of the sisters 'more than 50 times'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] It doesn’t get more lurid than this. Those poor children.
  • Marcelino Olguin, 63, of Perris, California, has been charged with seven counts of committing a 'lewd and lascivious act on a child' and six of torture

  • The foster dad and his wife Rosa, 58, were appointed caretakers of five Turpin siblings after they were rescued from their parents' house of horrors in 2018

  • Both they and their daughter, Lennys, 37, now face abuse charges involving the Turpin children

  • Marcelino is accused of molesting two Turpin sisters just months after the siblings were placed under his and his wife's care

  • The couple are also accused of abusing another four children, including a five-year-old force fed sleeping pills and made to stand in a corner for hours on end

Ohio Court of Appeals issues a decision in the Gibson’s Bakery v. Oberlin College case
[LegalInsurrection] On November 10, 2020, the Court heard oral argument on (1) the appeal by Oberlin College and Dean of Students Meredith Raimando seeking to overturn the compensatory and punitive damage awards totalling, after reduction under Ohio tort reform law, $25 million, plus over $6 million in attorney’s fees, bringing the judgment to over $32 million, and (2) the cross-appeal by Gibson’s Bakery and two members of the Gibson family (including the widow of the late David Gibson) seeking to restore the full $33 million punitive damages award, arguing the tort reform reduction was unconstitutional, which would add back about $15 million to the judgment.

One of the Judges who sat on oral argument, Julie Shafer, was not reelected on November 3, 2020, and was replaced by Judge Betty Sutton, who joined Judges Jennifer Hensal and Donna Carr.

A decision was just issued, written by Justice Carr:

"Appellants, Oberlin College and its Dean of Students, Meredith Raimondo (collectively “Oberlin” or individually “the college” or “Raimondo”), appeal from a judgment of the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas that entered judgment against them and awarded compensatory and punitive damages to Gibson Brothers, Inc., Allyn W. Gibson, and David R. Gibson1 (collectively “the Gibsons”). The Gibsons cross-appealed the trial court’s reduction of damages that the jury had originally awarded them. This Court affirms."
Summary: The appeals court ruled Oberlin College has to pay the bakery all the money.

#1  HALLELUJAH!

A sad note: "As satisfying as this must be to the Gibson family, it also must be bittersweet because the two lead plaintiffs and the patriarchs of the family did not live to see the appeals court verdict:
- David Gibson of Gibson’s Bakery has passed away. (November 16, 2019)
- “Grandpa” Allyn W. Gibson of Gibson’s Bakery Passes Away At Age 93 (February 14, 2022)

Fuck the Oberlin administrator-bastards. Fuck then and their lawyers fircwhat they did to these kind, decent, normal people:

"as David Gibson revealed when he announced his cancer diagnosis after the verdict, Oberlin College dragged out the case knowing David was terminally ill."

...Grew up a short drive from Oberlin, and even then (late 60s, early 70s) it was known as 'Moscow-On-Route-57'. The school has been living on its mid 19th century reputation for way too long, and may be about to hit something of a wall.

The school was originally intending to pay damages out of their endowment fund, and since it's just shy of one billion dollars, $33M USD would have effectively cost the school nothing. Trouble is that the alumni who contributed so much of that money are adamantly opposed to any of it going for the damages...which means it will come out of Oberlin's insurance. And that's going to cost them bigly.

There's also the fact that the College - faculty and students alike - hate the locals, and the locals return the favor. The locals are kind of a microcosm of the rest of the state: politically center-liberal, socially VERY conservative. Politics at the state level have been inching rightward for a while now, and if the Democrats do enough damage, I can see cities like Cleveland and Toledo digging in and saying 'enough'.

Also, there was/is a congressman who was all for impeaching Trump.

Almost makes me yearn for Dennis Kucinich.

The College, the staff, and its alumni have learned an important lesson today. Hate Speech, Lies, and organizing protests based on them costs Big Buck$

BTW: The College Demographics show that the enrolled student population at Oberlin College, is 60.4% White, and only 5.41% Black or African American. In short a White LIBERAL college.

NOTE: The former Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo is a White Female and is now VP of Student Affairs at Oglethorpe University in the Metro-Atlanta GA. area.

Just what Atlanta needs another transplanted Yankee Liberal. Coming down here to tell us how they did it up north to screw up everything...

NN,

I wish that was the lesson they learned. All Oberlin, its students, faculty, and administration know now is that Those Deplorable Hicks beyond the Quad are racist/unwoke/otherwise icky, and this just proves it.

#12  I am an Ohioan. My younger brother graduated from Oberlin; I went to a service academy. We have compared notes. Oberlin is a little isolated to be attractive to any non-hardcore liberals. I think there are several other equally liberal schools around the state that have better parties.

With respect to being like Florida, Ohio is a conglomeration of communities that either have Trump or BLM signs in the front yard. All the working class towns are solidly pro-Trump. The affluent towns tend to be liberal, but the majority is MAGA. The biggest difference is in leadership. Jordan is the exception not the rule. Dewine resembles Desantis in the same way that a jelly donut resembles a Porterhouse steak. I guess their last names start with D so they are alike in that regard

Governor John Kasich ran for president twice, DooDahMan, in 2000 and 2016. Before that he was a congressman for nearly two decades.

Mike DeWine is Ohio’s current governor. He’s conservative for a country club Republican. Or possibly he’s anti-Trump for a conservative Republican. His career covers all the bases: public prosecutor, congressman, lieutenant governor, senator, Ohio attorney general, now this.

#16  My answer to #4
Ohio is no Florida
SW Ohio Resident most of life.
Ohio Governor, Mike Dewine is a RINO who faked covid to avoid standing on stage with Trump during the Presidential campaign. He is for red flag laws, but signed CCW into law. He raised property tax significantly, increased gas tax for road improvement, is heavily involved in the First Energy Scandal that brought down the House Speaker.
Current canidates running for Governor are weak from both parties.
Lt. Governor John Husted is the capitol's pajama boy. Life long politician, like nails on chalkboard to listen to him speak.
A knowledgeable Columbus lobbyist acquaintance of mine suggests Dewine will be reelected and retire two years into his term, turning over the reigns to Husted, good ol' boy that he is.
The House and Senate are majority Republican and conservative but can be bribed.
Liberals run the big cities and the rest of the state is conservative.
it will be a long time before Ohio is like Florida.

Man sorely regrets injecting his johnson with cocaine as it turns black and ROTS
[Blaze] A 35-year-old man showed up at a hospital in New York after injecting his penis with cocaine and subsequently watching in horror as his member turned black and began to rot, according to emergency room doctors at BronxCare Hospital Center.

The unidentified man reportedly spent three days with "excruciating and progressive penile and scrotal pain" that started almost immediately after the injection. Doctors reported "ulcerations and swelling" on his penis and scrotum with "foul-smelling serous discharge" as well as "necrosis" of the penis, the medical term for rotting tissue.

The man admitted this wasn't the first time he'd made the stunning decision to inject cocaine directly into the "dorsal vein" of his penis, stating that he had tempted fate "at least two times in the past two weeks without any complications."

12-foot alligator found in newly built Florida home ahead of open house
[NYPOST] Just when you thought Florida’s housing market couldn’t get any scarier.

A worker putting the finishing touches on a new Fort Myers-area home this month discovered a gigantic 12-foot alligator loitering in the master bedroom, according to the Miami Herald.

A window blind installer spotted the reptile and hastily called professional trappers to remove it.

Video taken at the residence in Babcock Ranch — where houses fetch upwards of $1.5 million apiece — show two men straining to yank the gator out of the home with a rope.

The agitated reptile can be seen rolling over several times during the struggle before finally being removed.

Project manager Matthew Goodwin told McClatchy News that the alligator was likely looking for some indoor warmth during a stretch of cold weather and became trapped.

Goodwin said the reptile made sure to sample every nook and cranny in the home before settling on the master bedroom.

"He went into every room and his mark," Goodwin said, according to the outlet.

Fresno Detective helps Joe Roy end life of crime
[Breitbart] A man who pleaded no contest to assault charges on Tuesday afterward exited the building and entered a police annex building where he allegedly assaulted a Fresno detective.

ABC 30 reports 24-year-old Joseph Roy pleaded no contest on an assault charge earlier in the day. The plea would spare him from prison time but "required to complete alcohol and anger management treatment and wasn’t allowed to have a firearm."

The plea would also result in a felony on Roy’s record with the understanding the felony would be reduced to a misdemeanor after one year if Roy maintained good behavior.

Roy’s attorney spent time trying to get the sentence postponed, claiming his client could not comprehend what was happening. Shortly thereafter Roy exited the court proceedings, entered the annex, and allegedly assaulted the detective.

KMPH notes the detective Roy allegedly assaulted was 24-year veteran of the police force. He "suffered a puncture wound to his forehead and long cuts to his face and scalp," among other injuries.

The detective was able to shoot Roy, thereby stopping the alleged assault. Roy died at the scene.
Wonder if he knew what was happening then? "You're dying, asshole. Quit bleeding on our carpet, dammit"
Police Lt. Bill Dooley said, "This is one of those cases where our suspect intentionally identified the Fresno Police Department. Intentionally went inside. He was not fighting to try to escape. He was fighting to try and hurt."

Dooley added, "There’s no connection between the detective who was assaulted by Mr. Roy. They’ve never had contact. The detective has not worked any of his cases."

Dozens killed and wounded in Sudan's Darfur: Local leader
[AlAhram] Heavy festivities between rival groups in Sudan's Darfur have left several people dead, with one local leader on Thursday reporting some 30 had been killed in the latest ethnic violence.

Fresh fighting broke out on Tuesday between the Fallata people and an Arab tribe in villages outside Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, witnesses said.

"The fighting has continued until Thursday, and has so far killed some 30 people and maimed dozens," a leader from the Fallata said, requesting anonymity.

One resident of South Darfur, Mohammed al-Fatteh, said fighting erupted after an Arab leader was killed.

A leader from an Arab group also said that the fighting continued on Thursday, reporting that there were "multiple killings and maimed."

Sudan's western restive Darfur region was ravaged by a bitter a civil war that erupted in 2003. The conflict pitted ethnic minority rebels who complained of discrimination against the Arab-dominated government of then-president Omar al-Bashir
...Former President-for-Life of Sudan He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself head cheese. He fell out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Hee was overthrown by popular consent in 2019. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it...
Khartoum responded by unleashing the Janjaweed, mainly recruited from Arab pastoralist tribes, who were blamed for atrocities including murder, rape, looting and burning villages.

The scorched-earth campaign left 300,000 people dead and displaced 2.5 million, according to the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
The main conflict has subsided over the years, but the region remains awash with weapons and deadly festivities often erupt over access to pasture or water.
Or someone stepped on someone else’s cousin’s shadow. Really, it’s what they do in that part of the world when they are not otherwise occupied.
Earlier this month, separate festivities broke out among herders and farmers in the rugged mountainous region of Jebel Moon in West Darfur, leaving at least 35 people killed. Scores of people have been killed and hundreds of houses torched in several bouts of violence in Jebel Moon, as well as elsewhere in Darfur in recent months, the United Nations and medics say.

The violence has reflected a broader security breakdown in Darfur following last year's military takeover led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, that derailed a transition to full civilian rule.

'Chaos in Haiti......again: ‘Anti-Crime' Protesters Burn U.S. Christian Group's Plane
[Breitbart] Haitians protesting against a recent spike in crime in the Haitian city of Les Cayes on Tuesday stormed a local airport and burned a small jet owned by a U.S.-based Christian missionary group, Reuters reported.

"The protesters entered the local airport in Les Cayes even though police fired tear gas at the group, according to a video of the incident filmed by online media group Cayes Infos," Reuters relayed on March 29 after reviewing the footage.

"The video shows dozens of people approaching the plane and pushing it down the tarmac. The plane is later seen on a street, apparently near the airport, where it was set on fire," the news agency detailed.

Agape Flights, the missionary group that owned the doomed airplane, confirmed the incident in a statement posted on its website March 29.

The press release read, in part:

Rioting broke out in the Les Cayes, Haiti area on March 29, 2022, including the airport.

Due to the rioting, Agape’s Chieftain aircraft has been destroyed, but our team on the ground is safe. We are preparing to bring them back to the U.S. safely.

#6  From the article:
Here is a quote from a missionary update that helps “explain” a bit: “People are mad that the roads are blocked by gangs, and the only way to travel to the Southern part of the country is via air. They assume the airlines control the gangs and are profiting off of the insecurities. Agape’s plane, happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

We are also hearing that they thought it was a politician’s plane.

How many times has there been military intervention needed IN THE PAST 50 YEARS? And who gets stuck with the dirty work of setting up another weak government or else a criminal strong man? The US Military.

I say let them fight it out until they realize just how bad their culture of gangs is, and let them bleed until either they fix it the old way (killing gangsters), or they kill so many off their own that their broken society/culture collapses.

Burn it down and then maybe we can consider a "from the ground up" rebuilt which they will have to do most of themselves.

Putin threatens to turn off Europe's gas supplies TOMORROW if countries refuse to pay in roubles
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
today threatened to turn off Europe's gas supplies from tomorrow if countries refuse to pay in roubles.

The Russian President, announcing a decree in televised remarks, said foreign buyers would have to 'open rouble accounts in Russian banks' which can be used to pay for 'gas delivered starting from tomorrow'.

'If such payments are not made, we will consider this a default on the part of buyers, with all the ensuing consequences. Nobody sells us anything for free, and we are not going to do charity either - that is, existing contracts will be stopped,' he said.

The move has been seen as a bid to bolster the Russian currency and economy, hit by Western sanctions, in order to fund the war. But Western companies and governments have rejected the move as a breach of existing contracts, which are set in euros or dollars.

The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
relies on Russia for 40 per cent of its gas consumption, costing the bloc £340million (€400million) a day in contracts which are mostly settled in euros or dollars. According to Gazprom, 58 per cent of its sales of natural gas to Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
and other countries as of January 27 were settled in euros. US dollars accounted for about 39 per cent of gross sales and sterling around three per cent.

A Kremlin decree published today sets out that contracts will be stopped if buyers do not sign up to the new conditions, including opening rouble accounts in Russian banks. The buyers can still pay in foreign currency and authorise the bank to sell that for roubles, which are placed in the second account, where the gas is formally purchased.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck rejected Putin's the demands as an unacceptable breach of contract, adding that the manoeuvre amounted to 'blackmail' and that he had not yet seen a new decree signed by Putin mandating gas payments in roubles.

Separately, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said German companies would continue to pay for Russian gas using euros as stipulated in contracts. 'By all means, it remains the case that companies want, can and will pay in euros,' he told a joint news conference with his Austrian counterpart Karl Nehammer.

A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson
...pro-Brexit British prime minister, succeeding no-Brexit Theresa May. BoJo is noted as much for his sparkling personality and his hair as for his Conservative policies....
said that companies do not plan to pay for Russian gas in roubles, adding that the government was monitoring the implications for the European market of President Putin's demand.

Asked if there were any circumstances in which Britannia would pay in roubles for Russian gas, the front man said 'that is not something we will be looking to do,' adding that Putin's latest decrees show 'the impact that our sanctions are having on the Russian economy'.

'There are no gas pipes directly linking the UK with Russia, our imports from Russia made up less than four per cent of total UK gas supply in 2021 so we are obviously less reliant on it than many of our European partners,' the spokesperson added.

#3  It's just economics, bro. Russia is rolling in money now -- look at the current account surplus. It's expected to DOUBLE this year.

$200-240 billion easily pays for the war and then some. From Reuters this morning:

"Analysing tanker traffic data, the Institute of International Finance (IIF) estimates Russia's March oil export earnings will total $12.3 billion - up sharply on March 2021 as energy prices soar.

Collapsing imports could see Russia's current account surplus double from 2021 to $200-$240 billion this year, the IIF also estimates.

#4  The war has been costing Russia about $500 million per day -- less now that they're relaxing the pressure on the north and focusing on mopping up what remains to be done to complete their control of the coastline in the south and east.

If the Russian Army is now spending $300-350 million per day, then Russia's increased current account surplus would allow them to easily fund the war for the rest of 2022.

#10  It's called correspondent banking, it's been around for over a hundred years. India and Russia will trade with each other using the rupee-rouble trading mechanism. They're selecting the bank now - India easily got around the US sanctions to buy oil from Iran using UCO Bank. There's another precedent, India's purchase of Russian air defence systems.
Posted by: Slineling Chusong5031 || 04/01/2022 15:51 Comments || Top||

#11  India, China, OPEC along with Europe's importers of Russian gas will render the sanctions useless.

The sanctions are just the US elephant trampling everything and shitting up the place again. This time the non western nations will go their own way and create their own non-dollar trading mechanisms... end of an era
Posted by: Slineling Chusong5031 || 04/01/2022 15:56 Comments || Top||

#12  Russia’s new customers are not as free spending as the old ones, and Russia is somewhat constrained by Western sanctions, so the new contracts will be less profitable than the old ones.

Russia would have a much smaller surplus if the government actually put in good roads and properly equipped their army, though overall they are to be congratulated on being much more sensible about spending than the Americans have been since Newt Gingrich retired. President Trump was keen to balance the budget, but unfortunately the senior Republicans in Congress at the time were not. It will be very interesting to see what happens on that front if the Republicans get veto-proof majorities in both Houses of Congress in November, or even just simple majorities.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Moscow says Ukraine hit a fuel depot inside Russia
April 1 (Reuters) - Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out an air strike against a fuel depot in the Russian city of Belgorod on Friday, an incident the Kremlin said set an unfavourable tone for peace talks with Kyiv.

Ukraine's foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said he could not confirm or deny reports of Ukrainian involvement in the strike as he did not have military information. The Ukrainian Defence Ministry and the general staff did not respond to requests for comment.

Video footage of the purported attack -- the first accusation of a Ukrainian air strike on Russian soil since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24 -- showed what looked like several missiles being fired from low altitude, followed by an explosion. Reuters could not immediately verify the footage.

#40  Phase one over, phase two starting. For those with military experience there’s a step called “reorganize and consolidate.” So far this has been a war of maneuver - more like naval warfare than traditional US ground doctrine. There are 40-60,000 Ukrainian troops trapped in the Donbas cauldron. Those are / were the best equipped / trained Ukrainian forces. Having ground them down for 30 days of minimal sleep / resupply it’s time to transition. The casualty rates will increase on both sides but there are insufficient trained, equipped Ukrainians to reinforce the pocket. Reductions using stand off weapons will be the preferred mode. Remember most Ukrainians speak / understand Russian. Calls to surrender will at some point be heeded. When the fixed Ukrainian force is no longer combat effective the remaining Russian forces committed will be able to transition to their next phase. Please keep in mind that the Ukraine is simply where the most visible portion of this war is being fought.

#45  Could be evolving into a very costly punitive action, culminated with a scorched earth, face saving tactical withdrawal.

That was one of the options. Russia is conducting a punitive action coupled with the liberation of the breakaway republics.

If they catch the approx. ten Ukrainian combat brigades in a pocket, it will be just icing on the cake for the Russians.

Ukrainians have a history of strnading their combat formations in cauldrons.

#46  Kiev was never central to Russian objectives. Their two goals were 1) to eliminate Ukraine as a potential NATO bulwark and 2) to protect the Russian speaker's in the Donbas.

The tactical means of achieving goal #2 involved beating down the Azov Battalion and other fascist paras.

The strategy for achieving goal #1 had three elements. The most important by far was to secure a lasting land bridge across the Azov Sea coast all the way to Crimea so that Russia's crown jewel, the naval base at Sevastopol, will never be threatened by NATO. Next in importance is to split Ukraine in two. Finally, the the third leg of the stool was to as Mearsheimer says, "wreck" Ukraine.

After Ukraine is wrecked it will become another Gaza, a basket case ward of the Western liberal nations, the shattered rump of a nation supported by the West which fights on hopelessly against its ruthless, dominant neighbor.

#47  ...split Ukraine in two. Finally, the the third leg of the stool was to as Mearsheimer says, "wreck" Ukraine

Similar to the Union strategy in the West during the Civil War. Grant split the South in two with the victory at Vicksburg, then Sherman wrecked the heart of the south with his March to the Sea.

They called Grant a bloody butcher of his own men and Sherman today would be called a war criminal, but they won the war. In the end, that's all that matters.

#49  #43 IMHO the Kiev thrust was a tangential gambit. There was maybe a 10% chance of the Ukies folding, capturing key leadership, etc. and wrapping things up quickly. Didn’t happen but it was worth a shot. More importantly was securing the Chernobyl site after the Ukrainian comments about going nuclear. A dirty bomb is nobody’s friend. Operationally that thrust tied down significant numbers of the Ukrainian forces defending Kiev - who could not then reinforce the other vectors of attack. Estimate it’ll take until the end of April to complete mop up activities in the cauldron. That’s a LONG time in todays arena. Presume both sides (US and Russia) will be planning the subsequent actions in the interim. “Firer’s, watch your lane.”

Exactly. Kiev was not a feint but a small side bet

#51  After Ukraine is wrecked it will become another Gaza, a basket case ward of the Western liberal nations, the shattered rump of a nation supported by the West which fights on hopelessly against its ruthless, dominant neighbor.

So all the sentimental talk about Ukrainians and Russians being one people, about Kiev being the heart of the Rus — all that was always meaningless? And really the intention all along was another Holodomor?

Wow. No wonder the Ukrainians objected.

#53  the sentimental talk about Ukrainians and Russians being one people, about Kiev being the heart of the Rus — all that was always meaningless?

Nonsense. We and the Confederates were / are one people. That didn't stop Sherman from burning starving and slaughtering his way through Georgia.

This is a war. War is hell. That doesn't diminish or detract from the reality the two sides are one people. It is in essence a civil war.

That's rich. It's Biden and the West's SANCTIONS that are going to cause 8-10 million people around the world to starve... and you have the gall to accuse Russia of causing starvation. Fuck you

You're so ignorant... The war in the Donbas has been going on for eight years! 14,000 people have died in this civil war!

It's a civil war between one side that's loyal to Kiev and that wants to join the West and another, Russian-speaking, that's loyal to Moscow. Only the ignorance of so many in the West can explain the unbelievable denial of basic facts

#67  Hi, meet Frank. He's a hall monitor. That's why he has the hat. And a stick.

There are a couple overlapping things going on here: one is the Donbas breakaway republics thing which is pretty much a Ukrainian civil war. The other is Russian security vs NATO.

The important bit for the Russians is Russian security. The Donbas is kind of a side-quest. But success there does mean a much fatter corridor to Crimea.

#75  #40 There are 40-60,000 Ukrainian troops trapped in the Donbas cauldron. Those are / were the best equipped / trained Ukrainian forces. Having ground them down for 30 days of minimal sleep / resupply it’s time to transition. The casualty rates will increase on both sides but there are insufficient trained, equipped Ukrainians to reinforce the pocket.

This is correct. The bulk of the Ukrainian Army -- most estimates are closer to 60,000 troops -- is encircled in the East, in the Donbas. The Russians are slowly and steadily tightening the noose. If the Ukrainians lose this force, they are finished.

Russia is concentrating on the Azov region, not Kiev.

#76  Clearly the Russian strategy is focused on cutting off Ukrainian access to the Black Sea -- in effect making Ukraine landlocked. Similar to the Israeli strategy against the Palestinians: shatter the nation and render it incapable of seriously threatening Israel.

Same for Russia vs Ukraine: make Ukraine into a kind of E European version of the Palestinian Territories, with no value to NATO.

As Russia sees tech brain drain, other nations hope to gain
[AyPee] Russia’s tech workers are looking for safer and more secure professional pastures.

By one estimate, up to 70,000 computer specialists, spooked by a sudden frost in the business and political climate, have bolted the country since Russia invaded Ukraine five weeks ago. Many more are expected to follow.

For some countries, Russia’s loss is being seen as their potential gain and an opportunity to bring fresh expertise to their own high-tech industries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has noticed the brain drain even in the throes of a war that, according to the U.N. refugee agency, has caused more than 4 million people to flee Ukraine and displaced millions more within the country.

This week, Putin reacted to the exodus of tech professionals by approving legislation to eliminate income taxes between now and 2024 for individuals who work for information technology companies.

Some people in the vast new pool of high-tech exiles say they are in no rush to return home. An elite crowd furnished with European Union visas has relocated to Poland or the Baltic nations of Latvia and Lithuania.

A larger contingent has fallen back on countries where Russians do not need visas: Armenia, Georgia and the former Soviet republics in Central Asia. In normal times, millions of less-skilled laborers emigrate from those economically shaky countries to comparatively more prosperous Russia.

Anastasia, a 24-year-old freelance computer systems analyst from the Siberian city of Novosibirsk, chose Kyrgyzstan, where her husband has family.

“When we heard about the war on (Feb. 24), we thought it was probably time to leave, but that we might wait and see. On February 25, we bought our tickets and left,” Anastasia said. “There wasn’t much thinking to do.”

Like all the Russian workers contacted for this story, Anastasia asked to remain anonymous. Moscow was cracking down on dissent even before the invasion of Ukraine, and people living outside Russia still fear reprisals.

“As long as I can remember, there has always been fear around expressing one’s own views in Russia,” Anastasia said, adding that the war and “the background noise of patriotism” made the environment even more forbidding. “I left one day before they began searching and interrogating people at the border.”

Each of the almost four million refugees who have fled Ukraine so far has their own story, the threads of their past lives, their escape routes and their current places of shelter all interwoven.

The BBC's Nick Thorpe met a family who found shelter in a Carpathian monastery in north-east Romania — living amongst monks, until one day they can return home to Kharkiv in Ukraine.

#3  11:11 Japan in its Diplomatic Blue Book returned to the definition of the South Kuriles as a territory "illegally occupied" by Russia. This wording was last mentioned in 2003.

Keep an eye on this. This is the second time in two weeks that the Japanese have brought this up, and I wonder if they're not quietly seeing what kind of response they'll get.

#5  would be interesting if Ukraine would tally its own losses

If the Ukraine totals are accurate, Russia has lost, in one month, more than 20% of their initial invasion force. Probably much more than 20% of their elite and special forces. Probably much more than 20% of their best equipment.

Zelenskyy recalls ambassadors to Morocco, Georgia
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has recalled Kyiv’s ambassadors to Morocco and Georgia, saying they did not do enough to get arms for Ukraine or get these countries to institute sanctions against Russia.

"There are those who work so that Ukraine can defend itself and fight for its future and there are those who waste their time clinging to their posts. I have signed a first decree to recall such a person, the ambassador to Morocco," Zelenskyy said in a video message Wednesday.

"We have also recalled the ambassador to Georgia," he added.

Kyiv’s envoy to Georgia, Igor Dolgov, had been called for consultations earlier this month after Tbilisi refused to approve sanctions against Russia.

Georgia had also blocked volunteer fighters from the Caucasus country to go to Ukraine.

"With all respect, there are no arms, no sanctions, no restrictions on Russian business. Please find another job," Zelenskyy said.

Russian troops withdrawn from Chernobyl with 'acute radiation sickness'
[NYPOST] Several hundred Russian troops have been withdrawn from the Chernobyl nuclear facility in Ukraine after suffering from "acute radiation sickness" and are being treated in Belarus, according to reports.

The Pentagon confirmed earlier that the Russian forces began to pull out from the defunct facility, which was taken on the first day of the invasion, after a pledge by the Kremlin to scale back its offensive.

But an employee at the Public Council at the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone management said the soldiers had fled while "irradiated" and bused to a medical facility in Gomel, Belarus, the Mirror reported.

"Another batch of irradiated bully boyz who seized the Chernobyl zone was brought to the Belarusian Radiation Medicine Center in Gomel today," Yaroslav Yemelianenko wrote on Facebook.

"Have you dug trenches in the Red Forest, b—hes? Now live the rest of your short life with this. There are rules for handling this area. They are mandatory because radiation is physics — it works regardless of status or shoulder ranks," he wrote.

"With minimal intelligence in command or soldiers, these consequences could have been avoided," Yemelianenko added.

Word about the sickness came soon after Ukrainian officials claimed that Russian troops "looted and destroyed" a specialist laboratory containing "highly active" radioactive samples from the decommissioned nuclear plant.

The lab contained "highly active samples and samples of radionuclides that are now in the hands of the enemy," the stage agency said in a Facebook post, referring to unstable atoms that release radiation.

The Ukrainian agency had said it hoped Russian troops "will harm [themselves] and not the civilized world."

President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of using the exclusion zone around Chernobyl to prepare new attacks.

A US official told Agence La Belle France-Presse this week that Russian troops were "walking away from the Chernobyl facility and moving into Belarus. Chernobyl is (an) area where they are beginning to reposition some of their troops — leaving, walking away from the Chernobyl facility and moving into Belarus.

"We think that they are leaving. I can’t tell you that they’re all gone," the official added.

Ukrainian president says defense is at a 'turning point'
[NYPOST] The Ukrainian president said his country’s defense against the Russian invasion is at a "turning point" and again pressed the United States for more help, hours after the Kremlin’s forces reneged on a pledge to scale back some of their operations.

Russian bombardment of areas around Kyiv and the northern city of Chernihiv and intensified attacks elsewhere in the country further undermined hopes for progress toward ending the brutal war. Talks between Ukraine and Russia were set to resume Friday by video, according to the head of the Ukrainian delegation, David Arakhamia.

A delegation of Ukrainian politicians visited Washington on Wednesday to push for more U.S. assistance, saying their nation needs more military equipment, more financial help and tougher sanctions against Russia.

"We need to kick Russian soldiers off our land, and for that we need all, all possible weapons," Ukrainian parliament member Anastasia Radina said at a news conference at the Ukrainian Embassy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made the case directly to U.S. President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. We hold these truths to be self-evident. All men and women created ... by the — you know — you know, the thing...
"If we really are fighting for freedom and in defense of democracy together, then we have a right to demand help in this difficult turning point. Tanks, aircraft, artillery systems. Freedom should be armed no worse than tyranny," Zelensky said in his nightly video address to the nation, which he delivered standing in the dark outside the dimly lit presidential offices in Kyiv. He thanked the U.S. for an additional $500 million in aid that was announced Wednesday.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea faked launch of 'monster' missile, says Seoul
[DW] South Korea's defense ministry has said that North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
fired an existing intercontinental ballistic missile and not a new one in last week's test launch.

South Korea has negated North Korea's claim that it launched what experts have dubbed its "monster missile" last week.

South Korea's military on Wednesday accused the North of firing a less-powerful existing weapon instead of a newly developed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) as Pyongyang had claimed.

Last Thursday, North Korea said it had test fired a Hwasong-17 missile — its longest-range ICBM — in the most significant weapons test in years.

State media in Pyongyang had called the launch "a historical event.''

SEOUL DISMISSES PYONGYANG LAUNCH CLAIMS
Seoul's military has said that, in reality, it was the same ICBM North Korea launched in 2017.

"US and South Korean intelligence has determined that what was fired on March 24 was a Hwasong-15," a defense ministry official told news agency AFP.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said it told a parliamentary committee that the details of Thursday's launch, including the weapon's speed, combustion and stage separation, were similar to those of the Hwasong-15, not the Hwasong-17.

The ministry said the alleged false announcement was likely an attempt by Pyongyang to compensate for a failed Hwasong-17 launch earlier this month.

Acccording to accounts from South Korea, the missile launched from the North's capital region on March 16 went kaboom! soon after lift off, with residents of Pyongyang witnessing the mid-air blast.

North Korea did not make any comments on the failed launch and state media is yet to respond to Wednesday's report from South Korean defense chiefs.

Since the beginning of the year, North Korea has conducted a flurry of missile tests in an apparent attempt to modernize its military arsenal and increase pressure on the United States amid stalled nuclear talks between the two countries.

US mortgage rates climb steeply, slowing housing boom
[Bloomberg via Aljazeera] Demand for second homes in the U.S. is plummeting as mortgage rates climb steeply.

After a pandemic buying frenzy, mortgage-rate locks to buy second homes dropped last month to the lowest level since May 2020, according to a report by Redfin Corp. While demand was still up 35% from February 2020, before Covid-19 hit the U.S., it was significantly lower than the previous month’s 87% jump, the brokerage said.

Reminiscent of the initial steps in the Obama Housing market crash.

Step 1 Low Interest rates to boost the economy.

Step 2 A Hot housing market leads to inflated prices.

Step 3 Economy Inflation and the interest rates are steeply increased. Unemployment increases.

Step 4 Sharp quick decline in housing sales sold at the inflated asking prices.

Step 5 Housing glut drives prices down. Leaving many new homeowners stuck with houses purchased at 25% to 30+ % over actual market value.

Step 6 Bankruptcies increase. A flood of vacant repo houses hit the market well below cost as the banks attempt to recover some $$$$$

Step 7 Taxpayers bailout the Banks again.

Buffett too, and lots of other hedge funds have joined the party. It's a big reason supply is so limited and prices are so high. Big investors can borrow cheap, collect rents, and watch the book value climb. When the market starts tanking they'll buy more houses and keep on collecting rents.

#5  Legally the prosecutor may be right. K was a Saudi citizen who entered the embassy or consulate of his own accord. That place is officially Saudi territory. He was apparently assaulted there. What jurisdiction does Turkey have for trying someone for a crime allegedly performed by Saudis whose vitim was a Saudi, on Saudi territory?
Actually K had been exiled from Saudi Arabia and was not to return to it under penalty of death.
He returned, sort of, and was apparently put to death. It is not clear that this action broke Saudi law.
Enemies of the US and/or Saudi Arabia made a big fuss about this to harm relations and to help the
ayatollahs in Iran.
Would some country have the right to prosecute the US government or any official for the death of Epstein, or the death of that girl on january 6?
That seems unlikely to me. What's the difference between these cases?

Dyson says its new Zone air purifying Bluetooth headphones can fight air and noise pollution
[euronews] Known for its home appliances like vacuum cleaners and air purifiers, Dyson is launching its first piece of wearable tech in the form of wireless headphones that have an air filtration system built in.

The company says its Dyson Zone product is aimed at millions of city dwellers worldwide who are exposed to high levels of airborne pollutants and excessive noise.

Each cup of the over-ear Bluetooth headphones contains a compressor which draws air through electrostatically-charged filters, trapping particulates.

The filters can also cut out common pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, Dyson said.
